Abstract:The compilation of foreign literature history is not only an important aspect of the disciplinary history construction of foreign literature, but also a sort of summary of the achievement and experience of a generation in the study of foreign literature history. However, although there are a large number of textbooks of foreign literature history, as well as high-quality books with rich contents concerning national literature history, it is a pity that we fail to have academic and authoritative works on the gener-al history of foreign literature which helps to sum up the foreign literature studies in China so far. This situation ought to be changed. American critics R. Wellek and A. Warren have already proposed compiling a comprehensive and cross-national histo-ry of literature, the necessity of which is further illustrated by certain problems in studies and translation of foreign literature in China. This authoritative work can be called“science academy version” of the history of foreign literature, which is supposed to be large-scale, multi-volume in length and with an overview of all times. With regard to the content, it should cover literature of all leading nations and countries in the world;it should also manifest a broad cultural vision and the compiling intention of re-cording the development of human language art. Besides, the contributors of the work are supposed to be professional scholars. We are looking forward to the coming of such “science academy version” of the foreign literature history.
