Abstract:Black hole spin is a quantity of great interest to both physicists and astrophysicists. We review the current status of spin measurements in supermassive black holes (SMBH). To date, every robust SMBH spin measurement uses X-ray reflection spectroscopy, so we focus almost exclusively on this technique as applied to moderately-luminous active galactic nuclei (AGN). After describing the foundations and uncertainties of the method, we summarize the current status of the field. At the time of writing, observations by XMM-Newton, Suzaku and NuSTAR have given robust spin constraints on 22 SMBHs. We find a significant number of rapidly-rotating SMBHs (with dimensionless spin parameters a>0.9) although, especially at the higher masses (M>4*10^7Msun), there are also some SMBHs with intermediate spin parameters. This may be giving us our first hint at a mass-dependent spin distribution which would, in turn, provide interesting constraints on models for SMBH growth. We also discuss the recent discovery of relativistic X-ray reverberation which we can use to "echo map" the innermost regions of the accretion disk. The ultimate development of these reverberation techniques, when applied to data from future high-throughput X-ray observatories such as LOFT, ATHENA+, and AXSIO, will permit the measurement of black hole spin by a characterization of strong-field Shapiro delays. We conclude with a brief discussion of other electromagnetic methods that have been attempted or are being developed to constrain SMBH spin.

Black hole spin evolution across cosmic time from the NewHorizon simulation

Abstract:Astrophysical black holes (BHs) have two fundamental properties: mass and spin. While the mass-evolution of BHs has been extensively studied, much less work has been done on predicting the distribution of BH spins. In this paper we present the spin evolution for a sample of intermediate-mass and massive BHs from the newHorizon simulation, which evolved BH spin across cosmic time in a full cosmological context through gas accretion, BH-BH mergers and BH feedback including jet spindown. As BHs grow, their spin evolution alternates between being dominated by gas accretion and BH mergers. Massive BHs are generally highly <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://spinning.Accounting" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> for the spin energy extracted through the Blandford-Znajek mechanism increases the scatter in BH spins, especially in the mass range $10^{5-7} \rm \ M_\odot$, where BHs had previously been predicted to be almost universally maximally spinning. We find no evidence for spin-down through efficient chaotic accretion. As a result of their high spin values, massive BHs have an average radiative efficiency of $<\varepsilon_{\rm r}^{\rm thin}> \approx 0.19$. As BHs spend much of their time at low redshift with a radiatively inefficient thick disc, BHs in our sample remain hard to observe. Different observational methods probe different sub-populations of BHs, significantly influencing the observed distribution of spins. Generally, X-ray-based methods and higher luminosity cuts increase the average observed BH spin. When taking BH spin evolution into account, BHs inject on average between 3 times (in quasar mode) and 8 times (in radio mode) as much feedback energy into their host galaxy as previously assumed.

Measuring the Spins of Stellar-Mass Black Holes

Abstract:In astronomy, the problem of black holes is arguably second in importance only to the problem of cosmology. A current frontier in black hole research is the measurement of spin. During the past three years, the spins of several stellar-mass black holes in X-ray binaries have been measured via two techniques: fitting the X-ray continuum spectrum and modeling the profile of the Fe K line. This fledgling enterprise motivates the following decadal goals: (1) Firmly establish the continuum-fitting and Fe K methods; obtain precise values of spin for 10-20 black holes, several using both methods; (2) use the derived masses and spins to test models of jets, GRBs, supernovae, black hole formation, black hole binary evolution, etc.; (3) serve the IXO mission by securing the Fe K methodology, which is currently the only means to measure the spins of supermassive black holes in AGN; (4) identify the correct model of high-frequency QPOs, thereby opening a third channel for measuring spin; (5) pursue X-ray polarimetry as a means of securing the continuum-fitting and Fe K methods, and also as a possible fourth avenue to spin; and (6) develop and test MHD models of thin disks in strong gravity. Achieving these goals requires the establishment of an RXTE follow-on mission dedicated to the study of bright and transient compact objects, as well as strong support for theoretical work on 3D MHD simulations of accretion flows in the Kerr metric of a spinning black hole.

Which Black Hole Is Spinning? Probing the Origin of Black Hole Spin with Gravitational Waves

Abstract:Theoretical studies of angular momentum transport suggest that isolated stellar-mass black holes are born with negligible dimensionless spin magnitudes χ ≲ 0.01. However, recent gravitational-wave observations indicate ≳40% of binary black hole systems contain at least one black hole with a nonnegligible spin magnitude. One explanation is that the firstborn black hole spins up the stellar core of what will become the second-born black hole through tidal interactions. Typically, the second-born black hole is the "secondary" (less massive) black hole though it may become the "primary" (more massive) black hole through a process known as mass-ratio reversal. We investigate this hypothesis by analyzing data from the third gravitational-wave transient catalog using a "single-spin" framework in which only one black hole may spin in any given binary. Given this assumption, we show that at least 28% (90% credibility) of the LIGO–Virgo–KAGRA binaries contain a primary with significant spin, possibly indicative of mass-ratio reversal. We find no evidence for binaries that contain a secondary with significant spin. However, the single-spin framework is moderately disfavored (natural log Bayes factor ln B = 3.1 ) when compared to a model that allows both black holes to spin. If future studies can firmly establish that most merging binaries contain two spinning black holes, it may call into question our understanding of formation mechanisms for binary black holes or the efficiency of angular momentum transport in black hole progenitors.

The ngEHT's Role in Measuring Supermassive Black Hole Spins

Abstract:While supermassive black-hole masses have been cataloged across cosmic time, only a few dozen of them have robust spin measurements. By extending and improving the existing Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) array, the next-generation Event Horizon Telescope (ngEHT) will enable multifrequency, polarimetric movies on event-horizon scales, which will place new constraints on the space-time and accretion flow. By combining this information, it is anticipated that the ngEHT may be able to measure tens of supermassive black-hole masses and spins. In this white paper, we discuss existing spin measurements and many proposed techniques with which the ngEHT could potentially measure spins of target supermassive black holes. Spins measured by the ngEHT would represent a completely new sample of sources that, unlike pre-existing samples, would not be biased towards objects with high accretion rates. Such a sample would provide new insights into the accretion, feedback, and cosmic assembly of supermassive black holes.
Attempt to Explain Black Hole Spin in X-Ray Binaries by New Physics

Abstract:It is widely believed that the spin of black holes in X-ray binaries is mainly natal. A significant spin-up from accretion is not possible. If the secondary has a low mass, the black hole spin cannot change too much even if the black hole swallows the whole stellar companion. If the secondary has a high mass, its lifetime is too short to transfer the necessary amount of matter and spin the black hole up. However, while black holes formed from the collapse of a massive star with solar metallicity are expected to have low birth spin, current spin measurements show that some black holes in X-ray binaries are rotating very rapidly. Here we show that, if these objects are not the Kerr black holes of general relativity, the accretion of a small amount of matter ($\sim $2 $M_\odot $) can make them look like very fast-rotating Kerr black holes. Such a possibility is not in contradiction with any observation and it can explain current spin measurements in a very simple way.
Systematically Revisiting All NuSTAR Spins of Black Holes in X-Ray Binaries

Abstract:We extend our recent work on black hole spin in X-ray binary systems to include an analysis of 189 archival NuSTAR observations from 24 sources. Using self-consistent data reduction pipelines, spectral models, and statistical techniques, we report an unprecedented and uniform sample of 36 stellar-mass black hole spin measurements based on relativistic reflection. This treatment suggests that prior reports of low spins in a small number of sources were generally erroneous: our comprehensive treatment finds that those sources tend to harbor black holes with high spin values. Overall, within $1\sigma$ uncertainty, $\sim86\%$ of the sample are consistent with $a \geq 0.95$, $\sim94\%$ of the sample are consistent with $a\geq 0.9$, and $100\%$ is consistent with $a\geq 0.7$ (the theoretical maximum for neutron stars; $a = cJ/GM^{2}$). We also find that the high-mass X-ray binaries (those with A-, B-, or O-type companions) are consistent with $a\geq 0.9$ within the $1\sigma$ errors; this is in agreement with the low-mass X-ray binary population and may be especially important for comparisons to black holes discovered in gravitational wave events. In some cases, different spectra from the same source yield similar spin measurements but conflicting values for the inclination of the inner disk; we suggest that this is due to variable disk winds obscuring the blue wing of the relativistic Fe K emission line. We discuss the implications of our measurements, the unique view of systematic uncertainties enabled by our treatment, and future efforts to characterize black hole spins with new missions.

Measuring the Kerr Spin Parameter of Regular Black Holes from Their Shadow

Abstract:In a previous paper, one of us has showed that, at least in some cases, the Kerr-nature of astrophysical black hole candidates is extremely difficult to test and current techniques, even in presence of excellent data not available today, cannot distinguish a Kerr black hole from a Bardeen one, despite the substantial difference of the two backgrounds. In this paper, we investigate if the detection of the ``shadow'' of nearby super-massive black hole candidates by near future mm/sub-mm very long baseline interferometry experiments can do the job. More specifically, we consider the measurement of the Kerr spin parameter of the Bardeen and Hayward regular black holes from their shadow, and we then compare the result with the estimate inferred from the Kα iron line and from the frequency of the innermost stable circular orbit. For non-rotating black holes, the shadow approach provides different values, and therefore the Kerr black hole hypothesis can potentially be tested. For near extremal objects, all the approaches give quite similar results, and therefore it is not possible to constrain deviations from the Kerr solution. The present work confirms that it is definitively challenging to test this kind of metrics, even with future facilities. However, the detection of a source that looks like a fast-rotating Kerr black hole can put meaningful constraints on the nature of the compact object.
Black hole Spin Measurement Based on Time-domain VLBI Observations of Infalling Gas Cloud

Abstract:The black hole spacetime is described by general relativity and characterized by two quantities: the black hole mass and spin. Black hole spin measurement requires information from the vicinity of the event horizon, which is spatially resolved for the Galactic center SagittariusA* (SgrA*) and nearby radio galaxy M87 by means of very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) observations with the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT). In this paper, we simulate EHT observations for a gas cloud intermittently falling onto a black hole, and construct a method for spin measurement based on its relativistic flux variation. The light curve of the infalling gas cloud is composed of peaks formed by photons which directly reach a distant observer and by secondary ones reaching the observer after more than one rotation around the black hole. The time interval between the peaks is determined by a period of photon rotation near the photon circular orbit which uniquely depends on the spin. We perform synthetic EHT observations for SgrA* under a more realistic situation that a number of gas clouds intermittently fall towards the black hole with various initial parameters. Even for this case, the black hole spin dependence is detectable in correlated flux densities which are accurately calibrated by baselines between sites with redundant stations. The synthetic observations indicate that our methodology can be applied to EHT observations of Sgr A* since April 2017.

Abstract:Black holes (BHs) are ubiquitous components of the center of most galaxies. In addition to their mass, the BH spin, through its amplitude and orientation, is a key factor in the galaxy formation process, as it controls the radiative efficiency of the accretion disk and relativistic jets. Using the recent cosmological high-resolution zoom-in simulations and in which the evolution of the BH spin is followed on the fly, we have tracked the cosmic history of a hundred BHs with a mass greater than $2 For each of them, we have studied the variations of the three-dimensional angle (Psi ) subtended between the BH spins and the angular momentum vectors of their host galaxies (estimated from the stellar component). The analysis of the individual evolution of the most massive BHs suggests that they are generally passing by three different regimes. First, for a short period after their birth, low-mass BHs BH $10$^5$ M$_ In this case, the BH spins tend to be well aligned with the angular momentum of their host galaxy and this configuration is generally stable even though BH merger episodes can temporally induce misalignment. We even find a few cases of BH-galaxy spin anti-alignment that lasts for a long time in which the gas component is counter-rotating with respect to the stellar component. We have also derived the distributions of cos(Psi ) at different redshifts and found that BHs and galaxy spins are generally aligned. Our analysis suggests that the fraction of BH-galaxy pairs with low Psi values reaches maximum at zsim 4-3 and then decreases until zsim 1.5 due to the high BH-merger rate. Afterward, it remains almost constant probably due to the fact that BH mergers becomes rare, except for a slight increase at late times. Finally, based on a Monte Carlo method, we also predict statistics for the 2-d projected spin-orbit angles lambda . In particular, the distribution of lambda traces the alignment tendency well in the three-dimensional analysis. Such predictions provide an interesting background for future observational analyses.

Abstract:(Reduced) Using the recent cosmological high-resolution zoom-in simulations, NewHorizon and Galactica, in which the evolution of black hole spin is followed on the fly, we have tracked the cosmic history of a hundred of black holes (BHs) with a mass greater than 2x10^4 Ms. For each of them, we have studied the variations of the three dimensional angle (Psi) subtended between the BH spins and the angular momentum vectors of their host galaxies. The analysis of the individual evolution of the most massive BHs suggests that they are generally passing by three different regimes. First, for a short period after their birth, low mass BHs (<3x10^4 Ms) are rapidly spun up by gas accretion and their spin tends to be aligned with their host galaxy spin. Then follows a second phase in which the accretion of gas onto low mass BHs (<10^5 Ms) is quite chaotic and inefficient, reflecting the complex and disturbed morphologies of forming proto-galaxies at high redshifts. The variations of Psi are rather erratic during this phase and are mainly driven by the rapid changes of the direction of the galaxy angular momentum. Then, in a third and long phase, BHs are generally well settled in the center of galaxies around which the gas accretion becomes much more coherent (>10^5 Ms). In this case, the BH spins tend to be well aligned with the angular momentum of their host galaxy and this configuration is generally stable even though BH merger episodes can temporally induce misalignment. We have also derived the distributions of cos(Psi) at different redshifts and found that BHs and galaxy spins are generally aligned. Robust supermassive black hole spin mass-energy characteristics: a new method and results

Abstract:ABSTRACT The rotational properties of astrophysical black holes are fundamental quantities that characterize the black holes. A new method to empirically determine the spin mass-energy characteristics of astrophysical black holes is presented and applied here. Results are obtained for a sample of 100 supermassive black holes with collimated dual outflows and redshifts between about 0 and 2. An analysis indicates that about two-thirds of the black holes are maximally spinning, while one-third have a broad distribution of spin values; it is shown that the same distributions describe the quantity ${(M_{\rm rot}/M_{\rm irr})}$. The new method is applied to obtain the black hole spin mass-energy, ${M_{\rm {spin}}}$, available for extraction relative to: the maximum possible value, the irreducible black hole mass, and the total black hole mass, ${M_{\rm {dyn}}}$. The total energy removed from the black hole system and deposited into the circumgalactic medium via dual outflows over the entire outflow lifetime of the source, ${E_{\rm {T}}}$, is studied relative to ${M_{\rm {dyn}}}$ and relative to the spin energy available per black hole, ${E_{\rm spin}/(M_{\odot }c^2)}$. The mean value of ${{\rm Log}(E_{\rm T}/M_{\rm dyn})}$ is about (−2.47 ± 0.27). Several explanations of this and related results are discussed. For example, the energy input to the ambient gas from the outflow could turn-off the accretion, or the impact of the black hole mass-loss on the system could destabilize and terminate the outflow. The small values and restricted range of values of ${{\rm Log}(E_{\rm T}/M_{\rm dyn})}$ and ${{{{\rm Log}}}(E_{\rm T}/E_{\rm spin})}$ could suggest that these are fundamental properties of the primary process responsible for producing the dual collimated outflows.

Constraining the Spin and the Deformation Parameters from the Black Hole Shadow

Abstract:Within 5–10 years, very-long baseline interferometry (VLBI) facilities will be able to directly image the accretion flow around SgrA*, the super-massive black hole candidate at the center of the Galaxy, and observe the black hole ``shadow''. In 4-dimensional general relativity, the no-hair theorem asserts that uncharged black holes are described by the Kerr solution and are completely specified by their mass M and by their spin parameter a. In this paper, we explore the possibility of distinguishing Kerr and Bardeen black holes from their shadow. In Hioki & Maeda (2009), under the assumption that the background geometry is described by the Kerr solution, the authors proposed an algorithm to estimate the value of a/M by measuring the distortion parameter δ, an observable quantity that characterizes the shape of the shadow. Here, we try to extend their approach. Since the Hioki-Maeda distortion parameter is degenerate with respect to the spin and possible deviations from the Kerr solution, one has to measure another quantity to test the Kerr black hole hypothesis. We study a few possibilities. We find that it is extremely difficult to distinguish Kerr and Bardeen black holes from the sole observation of the shadow, and out of reach for the near future. The combination of the measurement of the shadow with possible accurate radio observations of a pulsar in a compact orbit around SgrA* could be a more promising strategy to verify the Kerr black hole paradigm.
On the orientation and magnitude of the black hole spin in galactic nuclei

Abstract:Massive black holes in galactic nuclei vary their mass M and spin vector J due to accretion. In this study we relax, for the first time, the assumption that accretion can be either chaotic, i.e. when the accretion episodes are randomly and isotropically oriented, or coherent, i.e. when they occur all in a preferred plane. Instead, we consider different degrees of anisotropy in the fueling, never confining to accretion events on a fixed direction. We follow the black hole growth evolving contemporarily mass, spin modulus a and spin direction. We discover the occurrence of two regimes. An early phase (M <~ 10 million solar masses) in which rapid alignment of the black hole spin direction to the disk angular momentum in each single episode leads to erratic changes in the black hole spin orientation and at the same time to large spins (a ~ 0.8). A second phase starts when the black hole mass increases above >~ 10 million solar masses and the accretion disks carry less mass and angular momentum relatively to the hole. In the absence of a preferential direction the black holes tend to spin-down in this phase. However, when a modest degree of anisotropy in the fueling process (still far from being coherent) is present, the black hole spin can increase up to a ~ 1 for very massive black holes (M >~ 100 million solar masses), and its direction is stable over the many accretion cycles. We discuss the implications that our results have in the realm of the observations of black hole spin and jet orientations.

Multi-messenger Probes of Supermassive Black Hole Spin Evolution

Abstract:Using the semi-analytic model Serotina, we investigate the cosmic spin evolution of supermassive black holes incorporating recent results from general relativistic magnetohydrodynamics simulations of spin-down from relativistic jets. We compare several variations of our model with compiled black hole spin measurements derived from X-ray reflection spectroscopy, correcting for a bias arising from the spin-dependent radiative efficiency of accretion flows. We show that the observed spin distribution is in agreement with a model that includes jet-driven spin-down, a key mechanism that acts to modulate spins across cosmic time at both high and very low specific accretion rates. The data also clearly prefer models with coherent accretion over models in which accretion disks rapidly switch from prograde to retrograde. We further predict spin distributions accessible via spatially resolved event horizons by the next-generation Event Horizon Telescope (ngEHT) and Black Hole Explorer (BHEX), as well as gravitational waves by the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA), each of which offer unique and distinct windows into the population of spinning black holes. Jet-driven spin-down is most strongly imprinted on the abundance of very highly spinning objects in our model. In addition, we show that the spin distribution sampled by LISA events may contain a signature of the natal spin distribution of heavy seeds, but not of light seeds, offering additional discrimination between these seeding pathways. Spin distributions from these future observed samples can be used to constrain the detailed physical properties of the accretion flow on horizon scales around supermassive black holes.

Abstract:Modern astrophysical methods for determining spins of rotating stellar-mass black holes in close binaries and of supermassive black holes in active galactic nuclei are briefly discussed. Effective spins of coalescing binary black holes derived from LIGO/Virgo gravitational wave observations are specially addressed. The effective spins of coalescing astrophysical binary black holes and black holes with neutron stars are calculated for two plausible models of black hole formation from stellar core collapses (without or with an additional fallback from the stellar envelope) taking the stellar metallicity and star formation rate evolution in the Universe into account. The calculated distributions are consistent with the reported LIGO/Virgo observations. Distributions of the effective spins expected in yet undiscovered neutron star-black hole binaries have been calculated. Revising the Spin and Kick Connection in Isolated Binary Black Holes

Abstract:The origin of black hole (BH) spins remains one of the least understood aspects of BHs. Despite many uncertainties, it is commonly assumed that if BHs originated from isolated massive star binaries, their spins should be aligned with the orbital angular momentum of the binary system. This assumption stems from the notion that BHs inherit their spins from their progenitor stars. In this study, we relax this long-held viewpoint and explore various mechanisms that can spin up BHs before or during their formation. In addition to natal spins, we discuss physical processes that can spin BHs isotropically, parallel to natal kicks, and perpendicular to natal kicks. These different mechanisms leave behind distinct imprints on the observable distributions of spin magnitudes, spin-orbit misalignments and the effective inspiral spin of merging binaries. In particular, these mechanisms allow even the binaries originating in the field to exhibit precession and retrograde spin ($\chi_{\rm eff}<0$). This broadens the parameter space allowed for isolated binary evolution into regimes which were previously thought to be exclusive to dynamically assembled binaries.

On Spin Dependence of the Fundamental Plane of Black Hole Activity

Abstract:The Fundamental Plane (FP) of Black Hole (BH) Activity in galactic nuclei relates X-ray and radio luminosities to BH mass and accretion rate. However, there is a large scatter exhibited by the data, which motivated us for a new variable. We add BH spin as a new variable and estimate the spin dependence of the jet power and disk luminosity in terms of radio and X-ray luminosities. We assume the Blandford-Znajek process as the main source of the outflow, and find that the jet power depends on BH spin stronger than quadratically at moderate and large spin values. We perform a statistical analysis for 10 AGNs which have sub-Eddington accretion rates and whose spin values are measured independently via the reflection or continuum-fitting methods, and find that the spin-dependent relation describes the data significantly better. This analysis, if supported with more data, could imply not only the spin dependence of the FP relation, but also the Blandford-Znajek process in AGN jets.

Abstract:Using recent results from numerical relativity simulations of black hole mergers, we revisit previous studies of cosmological black hole spin evolution. We show that mergers are very unlikely to yield large spins, unless alignment of the spins of the merging holes with the orbital angular momentum is very efficient. We analyze the spin evolution in three specific scenarios: (1) spin evolves only through mergers, (2) spin evolves through mergers and prolonged accretion episodes, (3) spin evolves through mergers and short-lived (chaotic) accretion episodes. We study how different diagnostics can distinguish between these evolutionary scenarios, assessing the discriminating power of gravitational-wave measurements and X-ray spectroscopy. Gravitational radiation can produce three different types of spin measurements, yielding respectively the spins of the two black holes in a binary inspiral prior to merger, the spin of the merger remnant (as encoded in the ringdown waves), and the spin of ``single'' black holes during the extreme mass-ratio inspiral (EMRI) of compact objects. The latter spin population is also accessible to iron-line measurements. We compute and compare the spin distributions relevant for these different observations. If iron-line measurements and gravitational-wave observations of EMRIs only yield dimensionless spins j=J/M^2>0.9, then prolonged accretion should be responsible for spin-up, and chaotic accretion scenarios would be very unlikely. If only a fraction of the whole population of low-redshift black holes spins rapidly, spin-alignment during binary mergers (rather than prolonged accretion) could be responsible for spin-ups.
