Abstract:<p>SrTiO3‐modified lead‐free piezoelectric ceramics, (0.93‐<i>x</i>)Bi0.5Na0.5TiO3‐ <i>x</i>SrTiO3‐0.06BaTiO3‐0.01K0.5Na0.5NbO3 [(BNT‐<i>x</i>ST)‐BT‐KNN, <i>x</i>=0‐0.06], were prepared using a conventional solid‐state reaction method. The XRD structure analysis and electric properties characteristics revealed the ST‐induced phase transformation from the ferroelectric phase to the relaxor phase and their coexistence state. Benefiting from the ST‐destructed ferroelectric long‐range orders, the high normalized strain value of 600 pm/V was obtained in the (BNT‐0.02ST)‐BT‐KNN ceramic at 5 kV/mm. The ST‐generated relaxor phase was found to have a constructive effect on improving the temperature stability and restraining the hysteresis of the electric‐field‐induced strain. The normalized strain of (BNT‐0.06ST)‐BT‐KNN ceramics could be kept at a high value ~337 pm/V at elevated temperature up to 120 ºC.</p>

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The paper primarily explores the performance improvement of lead-free piezoelectric ceramic materials, particularly focusing on bismuth sodium titanate (Bi0.5Na0.5TiO3, abbreviated as BNT) based materials. The core objectives of the research are: 1. **Reducing the driving electric field**: Traditional BNT-based piezoelectric ceramics require a high electric field to achieve large strains, which limits their practical applications. By adding SrTiO3 (abbreviated as ST), researchers aim to reduce the electric field strength needed to reach the same strain levels. 2. **Improving temperature stability**: Many lead-free piezoelectric ceramics exhibit significant performance differences at various temperatures, which also limits their application range. Therefore, improving the temperature stability of these materials is an important goal. To achieve the above objectives, researchers prepared a series of SrTiO3-modified BNT-BaTiO3-KNN piezoelectric ceramics and analyzed their phase structure, dielectric properties, ferroelectric properties, piezoelectric properties, and electric field-induced strain characteristics and their temperature dependence through a series of experiments. Specifically, the study regulated the material properties by adding different amounts of SrTiO3 and found that an appropriate amount of SrTiO3 can significantly reduce the required driving electric field and improve the temperature stability of the material. For example, a maximum normalized strain value of approximately 600 pm/V was obtained in (BNT-0.02ST)-BT-KNN ceramics, while (BNT-0.06ST)-BT-KNN ceramics maintained a high strain value (about 337 pm/V) and low hysteresis (about 11%) at 120°C. In summary, this research attempts to improve the performance of BNT-based lead-free piezoelectric ceramics through material engineering methods, especially doping engineering, making them more suitable for practical applications.
