What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The paper aims to address the prevalence and clinical characteristics of strabismus and amblyopia in children. Specifically, the study's objective is to determine the prevalence and clinical features of amblyopia and strabismus among individuals aged 3 to 16 years in the Shanghai region of China. Through a hospital-based cross-sectional study, data were collected from children who visited the ophthalmology department of Shanghai General Hospital, affiliated with Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, between February 2023 and February 2024. Comprehensive ophthalmic examinations were conducted, including best-corrected visual acuity measurement after refraction, slit-lamp examination, cover test, and dilated fundus examination. The study results revealed the specific prevalence of amblyopia and strabismus in children within this age group and analyzed the main causes leading to these visual impairments. This provided baseline data for subsequent longitudinal studies and emphasized the importance of early screening and management, particularly for refractive errors in preschool and early school-age children.
