Automated Swirl Detection Algorithm (ASDA) and Its Application to Simulation and Observational Data

Abstract:Swirling motions in the solar atmosphere have been widely observed in recent years and suggested to play a key role in channeling energy from the photosphere into the corona. Here, we present a newly-developed Automated Swirl Detection Algorithm (ASDA) and discuss its applications. ASDA is found to be very proficient at detecting swirls in a variety of synthetic data with various levels of noise, implying our subsequent scientific results are astute. Applying ASDA to photospheric observations with a spatial resolution of 39.2 km sampled by the Solar Optical Telescope (SOT) on-board Hinode, suggests a total number of $1.62\times10^5$ swirls in the photosphere, with an average radius and rotating speed of $\sim290$ km and $< 1.0$ km s$^{-1}$, respectively. Comparisons between swirls detected in Bifrost numerical MHD simulations and both ground-based and space-borne observations, suggest that: 1) the spatial resolution of data plays a vital role in the total number and radii of swirls detected; and 2) noise introduced by seeing effects could decrease the detection rate of swirls, but has no significant influences in determining their inferred properties. All results have shown that there is no significant difference in the analysed properties between counter-clockwise or clockwise rotating swirls. About 70% of swirls are located in intergranular lanes. Most of the swirls have lifetimes less than twice of the cadences, meaning future research should aim to use data with much higher cadences than 6 s. In the conclusions, we propose some promising future research applications where ASDA may provide useful insights.

Abstract:An auroral substorm is an important geophysical phenomenon that reflects the interaction between the solar wind and the Earth's magnetosphere. Detecting substorms is of practical significance in order to prevent disruption to communication and global positioning systems. However, existing detection methods can be inaccurate or require time-consuming manual analysis and are therefore impractical for large-scale data sets. In this paper, we propose an automatic auroral substorm detection method based on a shape-constrained sparse and low-rank decomposition (SCSLD) framework. Our method automatically detects real substorm onsets in large-scale aurora sequences, which overcomes the limitations of manual detection. To reduce noise interference inherent in current SLD methods, we introduce a shape constraint to force the noise to be assigned to the low-rank part (stationary background), thus ensuring the accuracy of the sparse part (moving object) and improving the performance. Experiments conducted on aurora sequences in solar cycle 23 (1996-2008) show that the proposed SCSLD method achieves good performance for motion analysis of aurora sequences. Moreover, the obtained results are highly consistent with manual analysis, suggesting that the proposed automatic method is useful and effective in practice.

Extracting Auroral Key Local Structures from All‐Sky Auroral Images by Artificial Intelligence Technique

Abstract:Extracting auroral key local structures (KLS) containing both morphological information and spatial location from large amount of auroral images is the key for automatic auroral classification and event recognition and thus is very important for improving the efficiency of aurora study. However, it is labor‐intensive for human experts and challenging for computer execution because of the blurry boundary and inhomogeneous luminosity of aurora. In this work, we formulate the automatic KLS extraction to learn a mapping from an all‐sky auroral image to a KLS mask style with artificial intelligence technique. We explore the Cycle‐consistent Generative Adversarial Network to generate the KLS masks based on the unpaired training data set consisting of 2508 all‐sky auroral images observed between years 2003–2009 at the Arctic Yellow River Station, of which only 200 images were manually annotated as the ground truth of KLS masks. The extracted KLS are consistent with human visual perception, and the intersection‐over‐union metric is significantly improved by at least 17% than previous method by Niu et al. (2018) (https://doi.org/10.1109/TGRS.2018.2848725). Classification accuracy has been improved when combining the KLS masks further indicates the effectiveness and value of this work.

Multi-Band Periodic Poleward-Moving Auroral Arcs at the Postdawn Sector: A Case Study

Abstract:Poleward-moving auroral arcs (PMAAs) with recurrence periods on the order of minutes have been established as a distinct form of auroral activities. Their origin and characteristics, especially those on the dayside, are less understood due to the paucity of observations. Here, we investigate a periodic PMAA event at the postdawn sector based on optical measurements from the high-latitude Yellow River Station and magnetic measurements from multiple ground-based stations. The optical observations demonstrate a long duration (similar to 2.5 hr) of the periodic auroral arcs at not only the well-established red-line but also the green-and the blue-lines. This multi-band feature, together with images at far-ultraviolet wavelengths, demonstrates a wide energy range of precipitating electrons from hundreds of eV to several keV, with a characteristic energy of similar to 2 keV. The auroral luminosity variations at different wavebands show a consistent periodicity within 1.67-3 mHz, which is also shown in the ground-based magnetic pulsations. The auroral arc and magnetic field observations display signatures of field line resonance, which are likely driven by perturbations at the magnetopause boundary layer. These results complement our knowledge of the dayside periodic PMAAs and improve our understanding of their relationship with ultra-low frequency waves.

Abstract:Due to a large number of automatic auroral camera systems on the ground, image data analysis requires more efficiency than what human expert visual inspection can provide. Furthermore, there is no solid consensus on how many different types or shapes exist in auroral displays. We report the first attempt to classify auroral morphological forms by an unsupervised learning method on an image set that contains both nightside and dayside aurora. We used 6 months of full-colour auroral all-sky images captured at a high-Arctic observatory on Svalbard, Norway, in 2019–2020. The selection of images containing aurora was performed manually. These images were then input into a convolutional neural network called SimCLR for feature extraction. The clustered and fused features resulted in 37 auroral morphological clusters. In the clustering of auroral image data with two different time resolutions, we found that the occurrence of 8 clusters strongly increased when the image cadence was high (24 s), while the occurrence of 14 clusters experienced little or no change with changes in input image cadence. We therefore investigated the temporal evolution of a group of eight "active aurora" clusters. Time periods for which this active aurora persisted for longer than two consecutive images with a maximum cadence of 6 min coincided with ground-magnetic deflections, and their occurrence was found to maximize around magnetic midnight. The active aurora onsets typically included vortical auroral structures and equivalent current patterns typical for substorms. Our findings therefore suggest that our unsupervised image clustering method can be used to detect auroral breakups in ground-based image datasets with a temporal accuracy determined by the image cadence.

Abstract:The morphology and motion of auroras have been widely studied due to their indications on magnetospheric processes. Here, we report a new kind of "auroral curls," which have wavelengths in the mesoscale (∼100 km) and propagate azimuthally. Utilizing data from the Chinese Antarctic Zhongshan Station (the all‐sky imager and the high‐frequency radar), the Active Magnetosphere and Planetary Electrodynamics Response Experiment and the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program, we analyze an event occurred on 23 April 2019. We find these curls are fine structures in the poleward boundary of multiple arcs. Corresponding field‐aligned currents manifest as a series of longitudinally arranged pairs, while ionospheric flow velocities nearby oscillate with periods in the Pc 5 band. Observational evidence suggests these curls are connected with ultra‐low frequency (ULF) waves, which opens the possibility of using auroras to globally image ULF waves.

Abstract:Amplitude stripes imposed by ionospheric scintillation have been frequently observed in many of the equatorial nighttime acquisitions of the Advanced Land Observing Satellite (ALOS) Phased Array-type L-band Synthetic Aperture Radar (PALSAR). This type of ionospheric artifact impedes PALSAR interferometric and polarimetric applications, and its formation cause, morphology, and negative influence have been deeply investigated. However, this artifact can provide an alternative opportunity in a positive way for probing and measuring ionosphere scintillation. In this paper, a methodology for measuring ionospheric scintillation parameters from PALSAR images with amplitude stripes is proposed. Firstly, sublook processing is beneficial for recovering the scattered stripes from a single-look complex image; the amplitude stripe pattern is extracted via band-rejection filtering in the frequency domain of the sublook image. Secondly, the amplitude spectrum density function (SDF) is estimated from the amplitude stripe pattern. Thirdly, a fitting scheme for measuring the scintillation strength and spectrum index is conducted between the estimated and theoretical long-wavelength SDFs. In addition, another key parameter, the scintillation index, can be directly measured from the amplitude stripe pattern or indirectly derived from the scintillation strength and spectrum index. The proposed methodology is fully demonstrated on two groups of PALSAR acquisitions in the presence of amplitude stripes. Self-validation is conducted by comparing the measured and derived scintillation index and by comparing the measurements of range lines and azimuth lines. Cross-validation is performed by comparing the PALSAR measurements with in situ Global Position System (GPS) measurements. The processing results demonstrate a powerful capability to robustly measure ionospheric scintillation parameters from space with high spatial resolution.

Abstract:By using 7 years optical auroral observations obtained at Yellow River Station (magnetic latitude $76.24\,^{\circ}{\rm C}$N) at Ny-Alesund, Svalbard, we performed the first extensive survey for the dayside diffuse auroras (DDAs) and acquired observational results as follows. (1) The DDAs can be classified into two broad categories, i.e., unstructured and structured DDAs. The unstructured DDAs are mainly distributed in the morning and afternoon, but the structured DDAs predominantly occurred around the magnetic local noon (MLN). (2) The unstructured DDAs observed in morning and afternoon present obviously different properties. The afternoon ones are much stable and seldom show pulsating property. (3) The DDAs are more easily observed under geomagnetically quiet times. (4) The structured DDAsmainly show patchy, stripy, and irregular forms and are often pulsating and drifting. The drifting directions are mostly westward (with speed $\sim$5km/s), but there are cases showing eastward or poleward drifting. (5) The stripy DDAs are exclusively observed near theMLN and,most importantly, their alignments are confirmed to be consistent with the direction of ionospheric convection near the MLN. (6) A new auroral form, called throat aurora, is found to be developed from the stripy DDAs. Based on the observational results and previous studies, we proposed our explanations to the DDAs. We suggest that the unstructured DDAs observed in the morning are extensions of the nightside diffuse aurora to the dayside, but that observed in the afternoon are predominantly caused by proton precipitations. $\textit{(Abstract continues in PDF).}$
A Superposed Epoch Analysis of Auroral Oval Coverage During Substorms Using Deep Learning‐Based Segmentation Models

Abstract:As an effect of solar‐terrestrial activity, the aurora has always been a focus of substorm research. The expansion of the aurora is one of the important characteristics during substorms, which could be directly reflected by the change of auroral oval coverage. However, the related studies were limited because of the absence of a reliable automated method to obtain auroral ovals from a large number of images. In this paper, we propose a new strategy to achieve this. Based on the Segment Anything Model, we design a process for annotating the auroral oval region that requires little manual work. A new aurora segmentation model, HrSeg, is then developed to obtain auroral ovals more efficiently and accurately. Through 5‐fold cross‐validation, it is determined that the average intersection over union, Dice coefficient, and pixel accuracy are all greater than 0.97. Furthermore, images of 590 substorms observed by the Polar satellite Ultraviolet Imager are segmented. We present superposed epoch analyses of the auroral oval coverage calculated from the segmentation results. Generally, the coverage decreases slightly before onset, then rapidly increases for tens of minutes after onset, and finally decreases gradually. Moreover, the auroras in different magnetic local time (MLT) sectors exhibit different evolutions in coverage. It is also revealed that the evolution pattern of auroral coverage depends on interplanetary magnetic field orientations and seasonal conditions. The results quantify the variation of auroral morphology in terms of coverage, which complete the evolution pattern of aurora during substorms and provide a more comprehensive understanding of substorms.

Abstract:We report an Arase‐all sky imager (ASI) conjugate event in which the pulsating aurora (PsA) has a one‐to‐one correspondence with chorus bursts. Wavelet analysis displayed three peaks at ∼0.3 Hz, 4 Hz, and >10 Hz, corresponding to the main pulsation, internal modulation, and fast modulation, respectively. These correspond to the old terms of ∼5–15 s pulsations, chorus risers/elements and subelements/subpackets, respectively. Electron "microbursts" correspond to the 4‐Hz peak. The internal and fast modulations are further verified by the analysis based on fast Fourier transform analyses. Moreover, the spatial distributions of the Fourier spectral amplitude show that the internal and fast modulations are well‐structured within auroral patches. The above results indicate a paradigm shift away from quasilinear theory which implicitly assumes diffuse wave generation. The three time‐scale modulations are consistent with coherent chorus which has been theoretically argued to lead to pitch angle transport three orders of magnitude faster.

Poleward-moving Recurrent Auroral Arcs Associated with Impulse-Excited Standing Hydromagnetic Waves

Abstract:In Earth's high-latitude ionosphere, the poleward motion of east–west elongated auroral arcs has been attributed to standing hydromagnetic waves, especially when the auroral arcs appear quasi-periodically with a recurrence time of a few minutes. The validation of this scenario requires spacecraft observations of ultra-low-frequency hydromagnetic waves in the magnetosphere and simultaneous observations of poleward-moving auroral arcs near the spacecraft footprints. Here we present the first observational evidence from the multi-spacecraft THEMIS (Time History of Events and Macroscale Interactions during Substorms) mission and the conjugated all-sky imager to support the scenario that standing hydromagnetic waves can generate the quasi-periodic appearance of poleward-moving auroral arcs. In this specific event, the observed waves were toroidal branches of the standing hydromagnetic waves, which were excited by a pulse in the solar wind dynamic pressure. Multi-spacecraft measurements from THEMIS also suggest higher wave frequencies at lower L shells (consistent with the distribution of magnetic field line eigenfrequencies), which indicates that the phase difference across latitudes would increase with time. As time proceeds, the enlarged phase difference corresponds to a lower propagation speed of the auroral arcs, which agrees very well with the ground-based optical data.
