Abstract:We present a comprehensive review of the theoretical and experimental progress in the investigation of novel high-temperature quantum chromodynamics phenomena in small systems at both the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider and the Large Hadron Collider. We highlight the challenges and opportunities associated with studying small systems, by which we generally mean collision systems that involve at least one light ion or even a photon projectile. We discuss perspectives on possible future research directions to better understand the underlying physics at work in the collisions of small systems.

Abstract:The N*-program provides a path to understanding the essentially-nonperturbative fundamentals at the heart of the Standard Model: confinement and dynamical chiral symmetry breaking. Relating this data to QCD's basic degrees-of-freedom is a key challenge for theory. In tackling it, one steps immediately into the domain of relativistic quantum field theory where within the key phenomena can only be understood via nonperturbative methods. No one tool is yet fully equal to the challenge. Nonetheless, the last few years have seen significant progress in QCD-based theory, and the reaction models necessary to bridge the gap between that theory and experiment.

Abstract:This presentation briefly addresses three basic issues of low-energy QCD: first, whether the Nambu-Goldstone scenario of spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking is well established; secondly, whether there is a dynamical entanglement of the chiral and deconfinement crossover transitions in QCD; and thirdly, what is the status of knowledge about the phase diagram of QCD at low temperature and non-zero baryon density. These three topics were injected as key words into a panel discussion at the Schladming school on Challenges in QCD. The following exposition reflects the style and character of the discussions, with no claim of completeness.

Abstract:Recent achievements in nuclear forces theory open new perspectives for the next decade of low energy nuclear physics, bringing together people from very different communities. Although many developments remain to be done, the possibility to directly use QCD to describe nuclear system is a major challenge that is within reach. In this introduction to the 2009 International Joliot-Curie School (EJC2009), new trends in the strong nuclear interaction are summarized starting from quarks and ending with finite or infinite nuclear systems. At different energy scales, selected new concepts and ideas have been discussed in a rather simple way. Recent advances in the theory of nuclear forces, thanks to chiral perturbation and effective field theories, have led to a new generation of strong nuclear interaction particularly suited to low energy nuclear physics. The interesting aspects of new interactions compared to conventional forces are underlined. Recent achievements in ab initio theories that directly start from the bare nucleon-nucleon interaction and their key role to understand the three-body force are illustrated. Finally, future perspectives for standard nuclear physics theories, namely Shell Model and Energy Density Functional, are discussed.

Abstract:The organizers of this meeting have asked me to present perspectives of nuclear physics. This means to identify the areas where nuclear physics will be expanding in the next future. In six chapters a short overview of these areas will be given, where I expect that nuclear physics willdevelop quite fast: A. Quantum Chromodynamics and effective field theories in the confinement region; B. Nuclear structure at the limits; C. High energy heavy ion collisions; D. Nuclear astrophysics; E. Neutrino physics; F. Test of physics beyond the standard model by rare processes. After a survey over these six points I will pick out a few topics where I will go more in details. There is no time to give for all six points detailed examples. I shall discuss the following examples of the six topics mentionned above: 1. The perturbative chiral quark model and the nucleon $\Sigma$-term, 2. VAMPIR (Variation After Mean field Projection In Realistic model spaces and with realistic forces) as an example of the nuclear structure renaissance, 3. Measurement of important astrophysical nuclear reactions in the Gamow peak, 4. The solar neutrino problem. As examples for testing new physics beyond the standard model by rare processes I had prepared to speak about the measurement of the electric neutron dipole moment and of the neutrinoless double beta decay. But the time is limited and so I have to skip these points, although they are extremely interesting.

Abstract:. The recent progress of the relativistic many-body approach by the group at Peking University will be reviewed. In particular, axially deformed relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov approach in Woods-Saxon basis aiming at halo nucleus, time-odd triaxial RMF approach, the adiabatic and configuration-fixed constrained triaxial RMF approaches, a Reflection ASymmetric RMF (RAS-RMF) approach, and a new relativistic Hartree-Fock (RHF) approach with density-dependent σ,ω,ρ and π meson-nucleon couplings for finite nuclei and nuclear matter, will be highlighted.

Abstract:In this chapter we focus first on the theoretical methods and relevant computational approaches to calculate the electronic structure of atoms, molecules, and clusters containing heavy elements for which relativistic effects become significant. In particular, we discuss the mean-field approximation of the Dirac equation for many-electron systems, and its self-consistent numerical solution by using either radial mesh or Gaussian basis sets. The former technique is appropriate for spherical symmetric problems, such as atoms, while the latter approach is better suited to study non-spherical non-periodic polycentric systems, such as molecules and clusters. We also outline the pseudopotential approximation in relativistic context to deal with the electron-ion interaction in extended systems, where the unfavourable computational scaling with system size makes it necessary. As test cases we apply our theoretical and numerical schemes to the calculation of the electronic structure i) of the gold atom, and ii) of the superatom W@Au, where the inclusion of spin-orbit effects is crucial to the accurate understanding of the electronic properties. Furthermore, we describe the extension of our relativistic approach to deal with nuclear reactions driven by the weak force, such as the electron capture and $\beta$-decay, also at finite temperature in astrophysical scenarios, using the Fermi-Dirac statistics. The latter processes are indeed major drivers of the nucleosynthesis of the elements in stars and, thus, their understanding is crucial to model the chemical evolution of the Universe. Finally, we show the application of our relativistic quantum mechanical framework to the assessment of the elastic differential scattering cross section of electrons impinging on molecular targets, notably liquid water.

Abstract:Computational methods are indispensable to study the quantum dynamics of relativistic light-matter interactions in parameter regimes where analytical methods become inapplicable. We present numerical methods for solving the time-dependent Dirac equation and the time-dependent Klein-Gordon equation and their implementation on high performance graphics cards. These methods allow us to study tunneling from hydrogen-like highly charged ions in strong laser fields and Kapitza-Dirac scattering in the relativistic regime.

Abstract:Lattice QCD calculations of two-nucleon interactions have been underway for about a decade, but still haven't reached the pion mass regime necessary for matching onto effective field theories and extrapolating to the physical point. Furthermore, results from different methods, including the use of the Luscher formalism with different types of operators, as well as the HALQCD potential method, do not agree even qualitatively at very heavy pion mass. We investigate the role that different operators employed in the literature may play on the extraction of spectra for use within the Luscher method. We first explore expectations from Effective Field Theory solved within a finite volume, for which the exact spectrum may be computed given different physical scenarios. We then present preliminary lattice QCD results for two-nucleon spectra calculated using different operators on a common lattice ensemble.

Abstract:For molecules and solids containing heavy elements, accurate electronic structure calculations require accounting not only for electronic correlations but also for relativistic effects. In molecules, relativity can lead to severe changes in the ground-state description. In solids, the interplay between both correlation and relativity can change the stability of phases or it can lead to an emergence of completely new phases. Traditionally, the simplest illustration of relativistic effects can be done either by including pseudopotentials in non-relativistic calculations or alternatively by employing large all electron basis sets in relativistic methods. By analyzing different electronic properties (band structure, equilibrium lattice constant and bulk modulus) in semiconductors and insulators, we show that capturing the interplay of relativity and electron correlation can be rather challenging in Green's function methods. For molecular problems with heavy elements, we also observe that similar problems persist. We trace these challenges to three major problems: deficiencies in pseudopotential treatment as applied to Green's function methods, the scarcity of accurate and compact all-electron basis-sets that can be converged with respect to the basis-set size, and linear dependencies arising in all-electron basis-sets particularly when employing Gaussian orbitals. Our analysis provides detailed insight into these problems and opens a discussion about potential approaches to mitigate them.

Abstract:We provide a concise review on recent theory advancements towards full-fledged (3+1)D dynamical descriptions of relativistic nuclear collisions at finite baryon density. Heavy-ion collisions at different collision energies produce strongly-coupled matter and probe the QCD phase transition at the crossover, critical point, and first-order phase transition regions. Dynamical frameworks provide a quantitative tool to extract properties of hot QCD matter and map fireballs to the QCD phase diagram. Outstanding challenges are highlighted when confronting current theoretical frameworks with current and forthcoming experimental measurements from the RHIC beam energy scan programs.

Abstract:We define a laminar branched surface to be a branched surface satisfying the following conditions: (1) Its horizontal boundary is incompressible; (2) there is no monogon; (3) there is no Reeb component; (4) there is no sink disk (after eliminating trivial bubbles in the branched surface). The first three conditions are standard in the theory of branched surfaces, and a sink disk is a disk branch of the branched surface with all branch directions of its boundary arcs pointing inwards. We will show in this paper that every laminar branched surface carries an essential lamination, and any essential lamination that is not a lamination by planes is carried by a laminar branched surface. This implies that a 3-manifold contains an essential lamination if and only if it contains a laminar branched surface.
