Abstract:A systematic investigation is being performed to understand the combined size, loading rate and thermal effects on the responses of nanostructures such as nanofilms and nanowires. This paper summarizes what has been found so far, and presents the recent molecular dynamics simulations of the mechanical behaviors of single crystal fcc nanowires and nanofilms under different temperatures and extremely high strain rates. Based on the model‐based simulation results, the mechanism of the nanostructural responses will be explored and future research tasks will be discussed.

Abstract:Dynamic behaviours of a metalic material under high speed loading, such as in the case of high speed cutting, have a close relationship with the rate dependent microstructure evolution during plastic deformation. This fact is not taken into account in the conventional phenomenological modelling like Johnson-Cook (J-C) model. Gao-Zhang (G-Z) model, which is based on thermally activated dislocation motion theory, has thus been proposed to characterize the mechanical behaviours of material at high strain rates even beyond 10^4s^<-1>. This paper aims to compare the G-Z and J-C models over a wide range of strain rates. It was found that at a low strain rate (10^3s^<-1>-10^4s^<-1>), both the models give results close to the experimental; but that only the G-Z model makes correct predictions when the strain rate is greater than 10^4s^<-1>.

Abstract:Studying the dynamic failure of materials is crucial because this failure occurs extensively in mechanics and earthquake fields. However, obtaining the deformation and temperature fields in high-speed dynamic cases is challenging, particularly when analyzing the mechanics of thermo-mechanical coupling. This study developed a thermo-mechanical coupled in-situ measurement system to acquire synchronized information on the load, deformation, and temperature fields during a specimen dynamic failure process with high temporal and spatial resolution. In particular, the deformation field was obtained using a high-speed camera connected to a microscope that could achieve a spatial resolution of 3.6– 3.8μm /pixel and a temporal resolution of 1μs . Moreover, a 64 × 64 focal plane array infrared detector was developed to measure temperatures with a time resolution of 1μs . A Newtonian optical system was applied to achieve the infrared detector's spatial resolution of 25μm . The temperature measurement system could measure temperatures ranging from 100 to 800 °C. The split-Hopkinson pressure bar was used as the dynamic loading device to realize the high strain rate loading of a Ti-6Al-4V hat-shaped specimen, verifying the deformation and temperature measurement capabilities. The results from the Ti-6Al-4V specimen under dynamic loading showed an evident adiabatic shear band, and the temperature rise, suggesting that the experimental devices provided was an effective tool to study the thermo-mechanical response of materials under dynamic loading.

Abstract:A novel mechanical test for characterizing the transient, on-heating mechanical behavior of metallic structural materials was developed. It comprises the continuous heating of a specimen at a constant rate while loaded under a constant true stress. Key features of the approach consist of quantifying the thermal expansion (“thermal compliance”) and mechanical compliance of the load train, modeling the plastic flow and onset of localized necking of the test specimen, and the simulation of concurrent phase changes for multi-phase alloys. From such experiments and analyses, the instantaneous, true plastic strain and strain rate as a function of temperature can readily be determined and used to establish constitutive parameters (such as the apparent activation energy, Qapp, for plastic flow) and temperatures at which rapid deformation may occur. The test technique was validated for three alloys, Ti–7Al, Ti–6Al–2Sn–4Zr–2Mo–0.1Si (Ti6242S), and superalloy 718. For the single-phase-α titanium alloy, Ti–7Al, semi-log plots of strain rate vs inverse temperature (ln ε˙documentclass[12pt]{minimal}usepackage{amsmath}usepackage{wasysym}usepackage{amsfonts}usepackage{amssymb}usepackage{amsbsy}usepackage{mathrsfs}usepackage{upgreek}setlength{oddsidemargin}{-69pt}egin{document}$$dot{varepsilon }$$end{document}vs 1/T) were linear, and yielded a value of Qapp comparable to that for self diffusion of hcp titanium. The corresponding plots for Ti6242S with either a fully equiaxed or duplex (equiaxed/colony α) microstructure were also linear, but exhibited higher values of Qapp, a finding rationalized using simulations of the kinetics of dissolution of equiaxed α as a function of temperature and the so-called “mechanical contribution” to the activation energy of two-phase alloy systems. Abstract:Ultra-high-temperature materials have applications in aerospace and nuclear industry. They are usually subjected to complex thermal environments during service. The mechanical properties of materials in ultra-high-temperature environments have been attracted increasing attentions. However, the characterization and evaluation of ultra-high-temperature mechanical properties of materials are still challenging work. This article presents a review on the mechanical properties of materials at elevated temperatures. The experimental results and techniques on the ultra-high-temperature mechanical properties of materials are reviewed. The constitutive models of materials at elevated temperatures are discussed. The recent research progress on the quantitative theoretical characterization models for the temperature-dependent fracture strength of advanced ceramics and their composites is also given, and the emphasis is placed on the applications of the force-heat equivalence energy density principle. The thermal–mechanical-oxygen coupled computational mechanics of materials are discussed. Furthermore, the outlook and concluding remarks are highlighted.

Abstract:A new technique for measuring dynamic tensile behavior of metallic materials at elevated temperatures was developed. This technique employs a rapid contact heating method to obtain a stable and nearly homogenous high temperature field in the testing gage of the specimen. As an application of this new technique, a commercially pure titanium (CP-Ti) was tested in the strain rate range of 300s−1–1400s−1 and in a temperature range of 298K–973K. Quasi-static experiments (10−3s−1, 10−2s−1) were also performed in the same temperature range for comparison. The testing results indicated that both temperature and strain rate have pronounced influence on the mechanical behavior of CP-Ti.

Abstract:Current needs in the design and optimization of complex protective structures lead to the development of more accurate numerical modelling of impact loadings. The aim of developing such a tool is to be able to predict the protection performance of structures using fewer experiments. Considering only the numerical approach, the most important issue to have a reliable simulation is to focus on the material behavior description in terms of constitutive relations and failure model for high strain rates, large field of temperatures and complex stress states. In this context, the present study deals with the dynamic thermo-mechanical behavior of a high strength steel (HSS) close to the Mars® 190 (Industeel France, Le Creusot, France). For the considered application, the material can undergo both quasi-static and dynamic loadings. Thus, the studied strain rate range is varying from 10−3–104 s−1. Due to the fast loading time, the local temperature increase during dynamic loading induces a thermal softening. The temperature sensitivity has been studied up to 473 K under quasi-static and dynamic conditions. Low temperature measurements (lower than the room temperature) are also reported in term of σ − ε | ε ̇ , T curves. Experimental results are then used to identify the parameters of several constitutive relations, such as the model developed initially by Johnson and Cook; Voyiadjis and Abed; and Rusinek and Klepaczko respectively termed Johnson–Cook (JC), Voyiadjis–Abed (VA), and Rusinek–Klepaczko (RK). Finally, comparisons between experimental results and model predictions are reported and compared.

Experimental investigation of Lord Kelvins isentropic cooling and heating expression in tensile bars for two engineering alloys

Abstract:Solids when rapidly and elastically stressed change temperature, the effect proposed by Lord Kelvin is adiabatic thermo-elastic cooling or heating depending on the sign of the stress. A fast sensitive IR camera has measured temperature both decreasing and increasing. Temperature measurements made from the reversible, elastic part of the stress-strain curve during fast uniaxial tensile loading have been investigated. The isentropic temperature cooling from the loading curve is recovered by heating after the specimen fractures when the load is released. These measurements establish for the first time isentropic thermal recovery in two engineering alloys. The materials tested are an AISI 4340 steel and an aluminum 2024 alloy. Measurements of the isentropic thermo-elastic stress cooling are -0.61 K/GPa for steel and -1.7 K/GPa for aluminum alloy. The isentropic thermo-elastic stress heating is -1.16 K/GPa for steel and -1.6 K/GPa for aluminum alloy. The isentropic, elastic part of the temperature is fully recoverable even after extensive plastic deformation upon fracture.

Effect of Strain Rate and Temperature on Dynamic Mechanical Behavior and Microstructure Evolution of Ultra-High Strength Aluminum Alloy

Abstract:The dynamic mechanical response of Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloy with a high content of Zinc was studied using split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) at strain rate of 1778 s(-1)-6516 s(-1) and temperature of 25-400 degrees C. The microstructure evolution and fracture characteristics of this alloy were revealed from these studies. The obtained results show that the strain rate sensitivity is slightly positive below 3136 s(-1), but becomes negative at higher strain rates because of the development of adiabatic shear bands and cracks. From 25 to 400 degrees C, the flow stress decreases and there is an obvious decline above 200 degrees C due to occurrence of athermal softening. The dislocation microbands and geometrically necessary dislocation contribute to grain fragmentation. The fracture develops due to a combination of ductile and shear failure. This study in general provides a significant understanding on the relationship between microstructure evolution and mechanical behavior of high strength aluminum alloy under dynamic loading.

Abstract:The present work uses two-temperature model and Cattaneo's constitutive model to study the thermomechanical responses and the size effect on energy transport during ultrafast laser heating of Au nanofilms. It is shown that the grain size effects on thermophysical properties, heat transport and thermal stresses are rather evident when the average grain diameter is less than the electron mean free path. The study on heat transport shows that there are two heat waves propagating in the lattice during nonequilibrium heating of films. It is found that the classical thermoelastic theory can not reveal the generation of the ultrafast thermal stresses during nonequilibrium heating; however, it can approximately describe the stress evolution in the stage of thermal equilibrium.

Abstract:In this paper, experimental and numerical results of an aluminum alloy’s mechanical behavior are discussed. Over a wide range of strain rates (10−4 s−1 ≤ έ ≤ 103 s−1) the influence of the loading impact, velocity and temperature on the dynamic response of the material was analyzed. The interface friction effect on the material’s dynamic response is examined using a split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) in a high temperature experiment using finite element analysis (FEA). The effect of different friction conditions between the specimen and the transmitted/incident bars in the SHPB system was examined using cylinder bulk specimens and cylinder plates defined with four-layer configurations. The results of these tests alongside the presented numerical simulations allow a better understanding of the phenomenon and reduces (minimizes) errors during compression tests at high and low strain rates with temperatures ranging from 21 to 300 °C.

Abstract:As a typical failure behavior, the dynamic fracture is critical for material safety assessment and design, whose rapid evolution in the crack tip over a short time causes tremendous challenges in characterizing the evolution of the local temperature field. Although researchers have pointed out that temperature significantly affects fracture toughness, the temperature rise and the role of thermal softening in the crack tip region during the dynamic crack initiation need to be clarified. This work aims to evaluate the temperature rise effect at crack initiation in TC4 (Ti-6Al-4V) alloy under impact loading. We developed a thermal-mechanical coupled in-situ measurement system to obtain synchronized COD (crack-tip opening displacement) and temperature field evolution for the dynamic mode I fracture with high temporal and spatial resolution. The evolution of synchronous COD and temperature field during crack initiation under dynamic loading was investigated. The corresponding simulation was conducted to analyze the thermal softening effect at dynamic crack initiation. In TC4 alloy, the maximum temperature detected at crack initiation is about 130 °C, and the thermal effect on the material property is minor. The results of this work fulfill data support for investigating the coupled thermal-mechanical fracture behavior of metal.

Abstract:An experimental apparatus for measuring the dynamic behavior of materials subjected to strain rates on the order of 10 s and temperatures up to 800°C with a unique triple actuation system is developed in this work. This system is based on the traditional Kolsky (or split-Hopkinson pressure) bar design, with the addition of an external furnace used to heat the specimen to the desired temperature. A synchronized triple pneumatic actuation system is used to control the motion and timing of the the sample, incident, and transmitted bars. The cold contact time (CCT), or the time during which the heated sample is in contact with the room temperature bars before compression, is measured experimentally and carefully controlled to minimize the development of a temperature gradient across the sample and avoid heating of the bars. Experiments are performed in conjunction with ultra high speed imaging and 2D digital image correlation (DIC), as well as high speed thermal imaging. To verify the viability of the proposed system, experiments were conducted on Ti-6Al-4V (wt.%) at temperatures from 25°C up to and 800°C at an average strain rate of approximately 1200 s .

Abstract:Thermal shock behavior of ZrB2-20% SiC-15% graphite and ZrB2-20% SiC-5% AlN was studied by water quenching test. Strengths of the two materials were measured with different load speeds. It presented that the material strengths decreased with an increase of load speed, and gradually approached to a constant value. A novel method was provided for predicting heat transfer coefficients and thermal stress considering dynamical behavior during quenching test. It showed that the maximum dynamical thermal stress, which determined failure of the materials, was more than two times as the maximum quasi-static one.The method provided in this work can be used to obtain more accurate thermal stress during quenching test. Abstract:Uniaxial tensile tests were performed on H340 steel sheets at different strain rates ( 10-4 to 103 s-1 ) and temperatures (–30 °C and 280 °C). Oscillation-free forces were measured during high-speed tests at strain rates of up to 1000 s-1 using specimens with different stress states. Material hardening curve, strain rate sensitivity, temperature effects, and Taylor-Quinney coefficient for adiabatic temperature calculations were determined in experiments. Digital image correlation (DIC) technique was employed to measure displacement, deformation, and local strain fields. Meanwhile, the temperature fields of specimen gauge section were measured with a high–speed thermal camera in the uniaxial tensile tests at various strain rates. Damage and fracture-related parameters were calibrated and validated using porosity measurements on SEM micrographs and in combination with finite element (FE) simulations. A rate– and temperature–dependent plasticity and damage mechanics model (e 2 MBW) was proposed and calibrated to predict the plasticity and fracture behavior of H340 under different loading speeds. The study demonstrated good agreement in the overall experimental and simulated force–displacement responses and local strain evolution across all fracture specimens at loading speeds from 0.005 mm/s to 10000 mm/s.

Abstract:In advanced engineering applications, there has been an increasing demand for the service performance of materials under high-strain-rate conditions where a key phenomenon of adiabatic shear instability is inevitably involved. The presence of adiabatic shear instability is typically associated with large shear strains, high strain rates, and elevated temperatures. Significant plastic deformation that concentrates within a adiabatic shear band (ASB) often results in catastrophic failure, and it is necessary to avoid the occurrence of such a phenomenon in most areas. However, in certain areas, such as high-speed machining and self-sharpening projectile penetration, this phenomenon can be exploited. The thermal softening effect and microstructural softening effect are widely recognized as the foundational theories for the formation of ASB. Thus, elucidating various complex deformation mechanisms under thermomechanical coupling along with changes in temperatures in the shear instability process has become a focal point of research. This review highlights these two important aspects and examines the development of relevant theories and experimental results, identifying key challenges faced in this field of study. Furthermore, advancements in modern experimental characterization and computational technologies, which lead to a deeper understanding of the adiabatic shear instability phenomenon, have also been summarized.

Abstract:The paper reviews a decade of progress in high temperature mechanical behavior of materials and structures.The highlighted topics are multiscaling of mechanical behavior of materials at high temperature,creep mechanics of multi-component materials system,high temperature fracture under constraint and safety assessment of high temperature components.To meet the future challenges of the safe operation of high temperature plants and the development of high-tech machines,more efforts should be taken to address some critical issues,which includes correlation and transformation of the events in temporal and spatial scales: to understand the physico-chemical kinetics and the influence of external stresses;the measurement and theoretical interpretation of interfacial strength and defects at high temperature;the development of high temperature theory that takes into account the constraint effect on the stress field ahead of crack tip and creep crack growth rate;the extension of the current failure assessment diagram to cover the complexity of damage mechanisms by introducing a time-dependent damage scale.
Material characterization at high strain rate by Hopkinson bar tests and finite element optimization

Abstract:In the present work, dynamic tests have been performed on AISI 1018 CR steel specimens by means of a split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB). The standard SHPB arrangement has been modified in order to allow running tensile tests avoiding spurious and misleading effects due to wave dispersion, specimen inertia and mechanical impedance mismatch in the clamping region. However, engineering stress–strain curves obtained from experimental tests are far from representing true material properties because of several phenomena that must be taken into account: the strain rate is not constant during the test, the specimen undergoes remarkable necking, so stress and strain distributions are largely non-uniform, and the temperature increases because of plastic work. Experimental data have been post-processed using a finite element-based optimization procedure where the specimen dynamic deformation is reproduced. Optimal sets of material constants for different constitutive models (Johnson–Cook, Zerilli–Armstrong and others) have been computed by fitting, in a least mean square sense, the numerical and experimental load–displacement curves.

Abstract:In order to perform experimental identification of high strain rate material models, engineers have only a very limited toolbox based on test procedures developed decades ago. The best example is the so-called split Hopkinson pressure bar based on the bar concept introduced 100 years ago by Bertram Hopkinson to measure blast pulses. The recent advent of full-field deformation measurements using imaging techniques has allowed novel approaches to be developed and exciting new testing procedures to be imagined for the first time. One can use this full-field information in conjunction with efficient numerical inverse identification tools such as the virtual fields method (VFM) to identify material parameters at high rates. The underpinning novelty is to exploit the inertial effects developed in high strain rate loading. This paper presents results from a new inertial impact test to obtain stress–strain curves at high strain rates (here, up to 3000 s −1 ). A quasi-isotropic composite specimen is equipped with a grid and images are recorded with the new HPV-X camera from Shimadzu at 5 Mfps and the SIMX16 camera from Specialised Imaging at 1 Mfps. Deformation, strain and acceleration fields are then input into the VFM to identify the stiffness parameters with unprecedented quality.
