Abstract:Recently, various efforts have been put forward on the development of technologies for the synthesis of methane from CO2 and H2, since it can offer a solution for renewable H2 storage and transportation. In parallel, this reaction is considered to be a critical step in reclaiming oxygen within a closed cycle. Over the years, extensive fundamental research works on CO2 methanation have been investigated and reported in the literatures. In this updated review, we present a comprehensive overview of recent publications during the last 3 years. Various aspects on this reaction system are described in detail, such as thermodynamic considerations, catalyst innovations, the influence of reaction conditions, overall catalytic performance, and reaction mechanism. Finally, the future development of CO2 methanation is discussed.

Abstract:CO2 can be utilized as a mild oxidant in dehydrogenation of alkanes to olefins.Equilibrium conversion of the dehydrogenation can be increased and deactivations of the catalysts can be suppressed by adding CO2.Dehydrogenation of light alkanes to their corresponding olefins in the presence of CO2 has been reviewed,including the recent advances in development of the catalysts for the dehydrogenation,especially chromium-based and gallium-based catalysts.The main problems are that stability of these catalysts is still rather poor and their activity declined dramatically with reaction time,which are fatal for their industrial application.Improvements for the stability have been made recently by changing interaction between active species and support.The role of CO2 and related mechanisms in the dehydrogenation were also discussed.The dehydrogenation has been suggested to follow a redox mechanism over chromium and iron oxides,while proceeds through a heterolytic dissociation pathway on gallium and zinc oxides.It is recommended that future research should be foused on devolepment of efficient catalyst systems which can activate CO2 in relatively low temperature.

Abstract:A greenhouse gas and mild oxidant, CO2 can effect the oxidative dehydrogenation (CO2-ODH) of light alkanes over heterogeneous catalysts. These catalysts are bifunctional in that they mediate CO2 reduction while oxidizing the alkanes, most notably the C-2-C-4 components in shale gas. In this way, one obtains CO and alkenes as value-added products. Although desirable, this transformation has proven challenging in terms of catalyst design, with most catalysts for the CO2-ODH being metal oxides that typically undergo rapid deactivation. More recently, bimetallic catalysts have been identified as promising systems to activate alkanes by either selectively cleaving C-H bonds to produce alkenes or breaking all the C-C and C-H bonds to produce the dry reforming products CO and H-2. This Review describes general trends in the CO2-ODH of light alkanes. We will also outline how to use a combined approach involving flow reactor experiments, in operando characterization and density functional theory to determine whether a catalyst is intrinsically active for CO2-ODH or dry reforming.

Abstract:A review is presented on carbon dioxide as oxidant in alkanes catalytic conversion in the last 30 years.The supported metal oxide catalysts exhibits high catalytic performance.The results shows that the surface basic sites of catalysts are important to firm active centers and activate CO2.One of the actions of CO2 is to react with H2 or coke from dehydrogenation of alkanes and enhances catalytic performance.The reaction mechanisms are also discussed.

Abstract:With the rapid economic development, the excessive use of fossil fuels and the massive emission of carbon di-oxide (CO2), as a greenhouse gas, have aroused a series of environment issues. Direct CO2 hydrogenation to value-added chemicals using renewable energy is an effective strategy to reduce CO2 and dependence on fossil fuels. Among these value-added chemicals, light olefins and liquid fuels have attracted the attention of both academic and industry as one of the most important chemicals in our daily life. Light olefins and liquid fuels can be produced from CO2 hydrogenation via a modified Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (FTs) route or via a methanol-mediated process. Compared with methanol-mediated process, FTs route is favorable for CO2 hydrogenation to light olefins and liquid fuels due to its lower energy consumption and higher conversion efficiency. Although great progress has been made in CO2 hydrogenation to light olefins and liquid fuels, designing efficient catalysts to effectively control the activation of C-O bond and the growth of C-C bond remains a great challenge. This review highlights research advances in thermocatalytic hydrogenation of CO2 to light olefins and liquid fuels via modified FTs pathway. The catalyst design, reaction mechanism, catalyst component, and key factors affecting catalytic performance are summarized and analyzed for CO2 hydrogenation to light olefins and liquid fuels. The purpose of this review is to provide a comprehensive view on catalysts for CO2 hydrogenation to light olefins and liquid fuels to inspire the development of novel catalysts in the future.

Abstract:: The shale gas revolution provides an important opportunity for the development of low-carbon economy. In the catalytic conversion process of light alkanes (methane and ethane), carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) is used as an oxidant to participate in the reaction, where shale gas is converted into high-quality raw materials—synthesis gas and ethylene through C–H bond activation—an efficient process route for light alkanes conversion and CO 2 utilization. This article summarizes the recent progress related to C–H bond activation in dry reforming of methane (DRM), oxidative dehydrogenation of ethane (ODHE), and dry reforming of ethane (DRE) with CO 2 , and analyzes the key factors of carbon deposition on Ni-based catalysts in DRM as well as product selectivity in ODHE and DRM. The prospect for the future research in this direction is also proposed.

Abstract:Although carbon has been widely used in catalytic processes as a support material, very little is known about its function as an active catalyst. The scientific challenge is to achieve a detailed mechanistic understanding of the structural or chemical sites of the carbon that are catalytically active especially because of the very heterogeneous nature of carbon surfaces. This problem is complicated by the fact that there are limited tools to characterize the surface chemical and structural properties of carbon materials. This review highlights recent efforts from our group in utilizing well-defined synthetic nanostructure carbons in which surface properties can be controlled and systematically varied in order to identify their function for oxidative dehydrogenation reactions. Manipulation of exposed edge sites and oxygen functionalities are some of the aspects studied for controlling activity and selectivity on carbon catalysis.

Abstract:As the world gradually changes to zero net emissions, CO 2 conversion plays a crucial role in providing energy and chemical supply while meeting environmental requirements. Researchers attach great importance to the development of innovative CO 2 hydrogenation catalysts, and the pace of development in this field is also accelerating. The catalytic reduction of CO 2 by H 2 can lead to the formation of light olefins, which is generally following the mainly two routes: CH 3 OH-mediated route and CO-mediated route, while the active phase, key intermediate and reaction mechanisms for CO 2 activation and C-C coupling for synthesis of light olefins is still ambiguous. In this paper, the recent key advances in catalytic CO 2 hydrogenation to light olefins is reviewed in terms of the catalyst design, catalytic performance and reaction mechanism, which provide a deep understanding of the new catalytic system for CO 2 conversion. In addition, the challenges and opportunities for future research associated with CO 2 hydrogenation to light olefins are also discussed.

Abstract:Long-chain alkanes are abundant feedstocks supplied by natural resources and chemical industry. Specially, normal long-chain alkanes are primary products from Fischer—Tropsch synthesis (FTS) process, which is an important route for the utilization of coal in China. Facing a shift of energy nexus towards sustainable society, the conversion of long-chain alkanes derived from coal into value-added products (such as alkenes and oxygenates) is of great importance for securing China’s energy supply and the role transition of the commercial FTS plants from fuel makers to chemical suppliers. Among the potential transformation routes, the direct dehydrogenation of long-chain alkanes into alkenes is an attractive and practical route, due to the broad applications of long-chain alkenes (especially the linear α -olefins). In this review, we will summary the key insights obtained from the literature on the dehydrogenation of light alkanes based on supported metal catalysts and the dehydrogenation of alkanes with homogeneous molecular catalysts and then discuss how to translate these lessons into the development of efficient catalysts and processes for the dehydrogenation of long-chain alkanes into long-chain alkenes.

Abstract:Base metal catalyzed oxidative alkane dehydrogenation has emerged as a viable strategy for olefin synthesis for its usage of cheap catalysts, compatibility with various functional groups, and low reaction temperature. In this review, we discuss recent development of base metal catalyzed alkane dehydrogenation under oxidative conditions and their application in constructing complex molecules. Preparing valuable olefins from cheap and abundant alkane resources has long been a challenging task in organic synthesis, which mainly suffers from harsh reaction conditions and narrow scopes. Homogeneous transition metals catalyzed dehydrogenation of alkanes has attracted much attention for its excellent catalytic activities under relatively milder conditions. Among them, base metal catalyzed oxidative alkane dehydrogenation has emerged as a viable strategy for olefin synthesis for its usage of cheap catalysts, compatibility with various functional groups, and low reaction temperature. In this review, we discuss recent development of base metal catalyzed alkane dehydrogenation under oxidative conditions and their application in constructing complex molecules.

Abstract:Direct non-oxidative dehydrogenation of alkanes produces useful carbon feedstocks and hydrogen fuel. However, breaking the C–H bonds in alkanes typically requires high temperature, stoichiometric oxidants or high-energy ultraviolet light; processes that operate under milder conditions are attractive but tend to have poor efficiency. Here we report Pt/black TiO 2 photocatalysts in which Pt species are close to each other but not directly bonded, exhibiting high performance for alkane dehydrogenation in visible to near-infrared light at room temperature. For cyclohexane dehydrogenation, the turnover number for H 2 production exceeded 100,000 without any deactivation over 80 reaction cycles, far beyond thermal reactions. For methane, 8.2% conversion was achieved with 65% selectivity to propane, rather than the more common ethane. We propose that methane undergoes intramolecular dehydrogenation to produce a methylene intermediate. For C2+ alkanes, fast dehydrogenation (up to 1,440 μmol g −1 h −1 ) to the corresponding olefins was realized. Distinct from isolated Pt + monomers, the collections of Pt + monomers give better photocatalytic activity and selectivity.

Abstract:With the rapid development of industrial society and humankind's prosperity, the growing demands of global energy, mainly based on the combustion of hydrocarbon fossil fuels, has become one of the most severe challenges all over the world. It is estimated that fossil fuel consumption continues to grow with an annual increase rate of 1.3%, which has seriously affected the natural environment through the emission of greenhouse gases, most notably carbon dioxide (CO 2 ). Given these recognized environmental concerns, it is imperative to develop clean technologies for converting captured CO 2 to high-valued chemicals, one of which is value-added hydrocarbons. In this article, environmental effects due to CO 2 emission are discussed and various routes for CO 2 hydrogenation to hydrocarbons including light olefins, fuel oils (gasoline and jet fuel), and aromatics are comprehensively elaborated. Our emphasis is on catalyst development. In addition, we present an outlook that summarizes the research challenges and opportunities associated with the hydrogenation of CO 2 to hydrocarbon products.

Abstract:The catalytic hydrogenation of CO2 with renewable H2 is considered as one of the most practical approaches for the reduction of CO2 and the synthesis of valuable chemicals and fuels. Among the value-added products, olefins and aromatics are highly attractive as essential industrial feedstocks. CO2 hydrogenation to olefins and aromatics mainly undergoes a CO2-modified Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (CO2-FTS) route or a methanol-mediated (MeOH) route, but is often limited by low selectivity and catalyst deactivation. In this review, we first overview the reaction mechanisms and key intermediates along the CO2-FTS and MeOH routes. For each route, we summarize the recent progress toward the catalyst development as well as the optimization of reaction conditions. We conclude the review by identifying challenges and opportunities with an emphasis on approaches for exceeding the product distribution limit, suppressing the catalyst deactivation, and improving the feasibility of low-pressure operation by continuous consumption of key intermediates.

Abstract:Recent progress from first principles computational studies is presented for catalytic properties of nanostructured carbon catalysts in the oxidative dehydrogenation (ODH) reaction of short alkanes. Firstly, a brief introduction is given on the development of carbon catalysts in ODH since 1970. Oxygen functional groups have pivotal importance for ODH on nanostructured carbon catalysts. We discuss the oxidation process by HNO3 on pristine and defective carbon materials. The interactions between the oxygen molecule (oxidant) and the nanostructured carbon catalysts are quantitatively calibrated. Moreover the different nucleophilic abilities of oxygen functional groups are carefully compared and the strongest nucleophilic sites are proposed. The active sites and detailed reaction pathway are revealed from several computational studies. Diketone/quinone groups are generally considered to be the active centers in ODH. A reaction pathway via radical formation is considered as the favorable path. Furthermore, single ketone and carbon sites are verified to be active in ODH from the analysis of aromaticity. Heteroatom doping effects in ODH are examined. Nitrogen doping is found to be very reactive towards oxygen molecule activation. Other dopants such as boron, phosphorous and sulfur also have positive effects on the reactivity of ODH. Extensive calculations suggest that the BEP relation is applicable for the doped nanostructured carbon catalysts. In the end, an outlook for the future direction of the computational study is supplied.

Abstract:The catalytic conversion of CO2 to value-added chemicals and fuels has been long regarded as a promising approach to the mitigation of CO2 emissions if green hydrogen is used. Light olefins, particularly ethylene and propylene, as building blocks for polymers and plastics, are currently produced primarily from CO2-generating fossil resources. The identification of highly efficient catalysts with selective pathways for light olefin production from CO2 is a high-reward goal, but it has serious technical challenges, such as low selectivity and catalyst deactivation. In this review, we first provide a brief summary of the two dominant reaction pathways (CO2-Fischer-Tropsch and MeOH-mediated pathways), mechanistic insights, and catalytic materials for CO2 hydrogenation to light olefins. Then, we list the main deactivation mechanisms caused by carbon deposition, water formation, phase transformation and metal sintering/agglomeration. Finally, we detail the recent progress on catalyst development for enhanced olefin yields and catalyst stability by the following catalyst functionalities: (1) the promoter effect, (2) the support effect, (3) the bifunctional composite catalyst effect, and (4) the structure effect. The main focus of this review is to provide a useful resource for researchers to correlate catalyst deactivation and the recent research effort on catalyst development for enhanced olefin yields and catalyst stability.

Abstract:The oxidative dehydrogenation (ODH) of alkanes, whereby hydrogen is removed to form unsaturated compounds, is an important process, particularly in the petrochemical industry. The ODH of lighter alkanes (C3–C6) is well-reported in the literature, and while there are several reports on the ODH of n-octane (C8), there is no reported review of the important findings in the literature. This review discusses the gas-phase ODH of n-octane occurring at high temperatures (300–550 °C). The mechanisms via which the n-octane ODH of occurs are also briefly discussed. The oxidants (mainly O2 and CO2) and catalysts (supported and unsupported metal oxides) are discussed as well as the effect of these and the temperature on the type of products formed and their various distributions. Furthermore, the review looks at the acid–base and redox properties of the catalysts and how they affect product formation. Some challenges as well as perspectives of the ODH process are also highlighted.
