Abstract:Long-chain alkanes are abundant feedstocks supplied by natural resources and chemical industry. Specially, normal long-chain alkanes are primary products from Fischer—Tropsch synthesis (FTS) process, which is an important route for the utilization of coal in China. Facing a shift of energy nexus towards sustainable society, the conversion of long-chain alkanes derived from coal into value-added products (such as alkenes and oxygenates) is of great importance for securing China’s energy supply and the role transition of the commercial FTS plants from fuel makers to chemical suppliers. Among the potential transformation routes, the direct dehydrogenation of long-chain alkanes into alkenes is an attractive and practical route, due to the broad applications of long-chain alkenes (especially the linear α -olefins). In this review, we will summary the key insights obtained from the literature on the dehydrogenation of light alkanes based on supported metal catalysts and the dehydrogenation of alkanes with homogeneous molecular catalysts and then discuss how to translate these lessons into the development of efficient catalysts and processes for the dehydrogenation of long-chain alkanes into long-chain alkenes.
Hydrogenolysis and Hydrodeoxygenation of Lignin in a Two-Step Process to Produce Hydrocarbons and Alkylphenols

Abstract:Valuable fuels and chemicals production from biomass with high yields is always a big challenge in the energy utilization field. Herein, a two-step process for the catalytic conversion of lignin was proposed to form the fuels. In the first step, the depolymerization of lignin occurred efficiently via the hydrogenolysis reaction, resulting in 19.2% aromatic monomers under the catalysis of Pd/C and CrCl3. The catalysts exhibited a synergistic effect on the cleavage of β-O-4 bonds and the hydrogenation procedure, which prevented the condensation of intermediate products remarkably. Afterwards, the aromatic monomers were extracted out with octane solvent successfully (extraction degree 89.7%) and then used as a substrate in a second hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) step. Product mixture composed of 26.5% hydrocarbons (increased from 5.5%) and 49.7% alkylphenols (increased from 42.9%) were obtained after the HDO upgrading, which exhibited high potential to be used as fuels. This two-step approach is very promising to be a practical chemical engineering process for the fuel production from lignin.

Abstract:The catalytic conversion of CO2 to value-added chemicals and fuels has been long regarded as a promising approach to the mitigation of CO2 emissions if green hydrogen is used. Light olefins, particularly ethylene and propylene, as building blocks for polymers and plastics, are currently produced primarily from CO2-generating fossil resources. The identification of highly efficient catalysts with selective pathways for light olefin production from CO2 is a high-reward goal, but it has serious technical challenges, such as low selectivity and catalyst deactivation. In this review, we first provide a brief summary of the two dominant reaction pathways (CO2-Fischer-Tropsch and MeOH-mediated pathways), mechanistic insights, and catalytic materials for CO2 hydrogenation to light olefins. Then, we list the main deactivation mechanisms caused by carbon deposition, water formation, phase transformation and metal sintering/agglomeration. Finally, we detail the recent progress on catalyst development for enhanced olefin yields and catalyst stability by the following catalyst functionalities: (1) the promoter effect, (2) the support effect, (3) the bifunctional composite catalyst effect, and (4) the structure effect. The main focus of this review is to provide a useful resource for researchers to correlate catalyst deactivation and the recent research effort on catalyst development for enhanced olefin yields and catalyst stability.

Abstract:CO2 can be utilized as a mild oxidant in dehydrogenation of alkanes to olefins.Equilibrium conversion of the dehydrogenation can be increased and deactivations of the catalysts can be suppressed by adding CO2.Dehydrogenation of light alkanes to their corresponding olefins in the presence of CO2 has been reviewed,including the recent advances in development of the catalysts for the dehydrogenation,especially chromium-based and gallium-based catalysts.The main problems are that stability of these catalysts is still rather poor and their activity declined dramatically with reaction time,which are fatal for their industrial application.Improvements for the stability have been made recently by changing interaction between active species and support.The role of CO2 and related mechanisms in the dehydrogenation were also discussed.The dehydrogenation has been suggested to follow a redox mechanism over chromium and iron oxides,while proceeds through a heterolytic dissociation pathway on gallium and zinc oxides.It is recommended that future research should be foused on devolepment of efficient catalyst systems which can activate CO2 in relatively low temperature.

Abstract:Light olefins are important feedstocks and platform molecules for the chemical industry. Their synthesis has been a research priority in both academia and industry. There are many different approaches to the synthesis of these compounds, which differ by the choice of raw materials, catalysts and reaction conditions. The goals of this review are to highlight the most recent trends in light olefin synthesis and to perform a comparative analysis of different synthetic routes using several quantitative characteristics: selectivity, productivity, severity of operating conditions, stability, technological maturity and sustainability. Traditionally, on an industrial scale, the cracking of oil fractions has been used to produce light olefins. Methanol-to-olefins, alkane direct or oxidative dehydrogenation technologies have great potential in the short term and have already reached scientific and technological maturities. Major progress should be made in the field of methanol-mediated CO and CO2 direct hydrogenation to light olefins. The electrocatalytic reduction of CO2 to light olefins is a very attractive process in the long run due to the low reaction temperature and possible use of sustainable electricity. The application of modern concepts such as electricity-driven process intensification, looping, CO2 management and nanoscale catalyst design should lead in the near future to more environmentally friendly, energy efficient and selective large-scale technologies for light olefin synthesis.

Abstract:Light alkanes are the most abundantly available carbon-based feedstocks on earth and as major constituents of natural gas and oil-associated gas.Compared with oil, natural gas is considered a greener fuel and promising alternative for energy and chemical production.However, the grand challenge in the chemistry of light alkanes utilization is the development of an efficient method for the selective activation C-H bond.The transportation issue comes from the low boiling point.On the other hand, these unactivated molecules are hard to be activated under mild conditions because of their high bond dissociation energy and low acidity.Moreover, the functionalized products, such as ethylene or methanol, have higher reactivity than light alkanes.Due to these challenges, it is vital that develop efficient processes to achieve value-added convert under economic and green reaction conditions.In this review, we summarized the recent progress in the field of homogeneous functionalizations of light alkanes and was subtitled to four different aspects according to the mechanism, including electrophilic substitution, oxidative addition, carbene insertion, and free radical substitution.However, developing a new, lower temperature, economic, and green direct light alkanes conversion process is still needed to address.

Abstract:A greenhouse gas and mild oxidant, CO2 can effect the oxidative dehydrogenation (CO2-ODH) of light alkanes over heterogeneous catalysts. These catalysts are bifunctional in that they mediate CO2 reduction while oxidizing the alkanes, most notably the C-2-C-4 components in shale gas. In this way, one obtains CO and alkenes as value-added products. Although desirable, this transformation has proven challenging in terms of catalyst design, with most catalysts for the CO2-ODH being metal oxides that typically undergo rapid deactivation. More recently, bimetallic catalysts have been identified as promising systems to activate alkanes by either selectively cleaving C-H bonds to produce alkenes or breaking all the C-C and C-H bonds to produce the dry reforming products CO and H-2. This Review describes general trends in the CO2-ODH of light alkanes. We will also outline how to use a combined approach involving flow reactor experiments, in operando characterization and density functional theory to determine whether a catalyst is intrinsically active for CO2-ODH or dry reforming.

Abstract:Lignin exists widely in nature and is a potential substitute for traditional fossil fuels. The technology of producing alkanes from lignin and its derivatives has been extensively studied in recent decades. This review summarizes state-of-the-art strategies for the conversion of lignin to alkanes over different multifunctional catalysts. The hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) process of lignin and lignin-derived compounds at different metal sites and the possible depolymerization pathways are detailed discussed. The roles of different active metals and their advantages for the catalysts and conversion of lignin to alkanes are also described. Finally, the major challenges and the future research trend in this field have been prospected.

Abstract:Light olefins are key components of modern chemical industry and are feedstocks for the production of many commodity chemicals widely used in our daily life. It would be of great economic significance to convert light alkanes, produced during the refining of crude oil or extracted during the processing of natural gas selectively to value-added products, such as light alkenes, aromatic hydrocarbons, etc., through catalytic dehydrogenation. Among various catalysts developed, Ga-modified ZSM-5-based catalysts exhibit superior catalytic performance and stability in dehydrogenation of light alkanes. In this mini review, we summarize the progress on synthesis and application of Ga-modified ZSM-5 as catalysts in dehydrogenation of light alkanes to olefins, and the dehydroaromatization to aromatics in the past two decades, as well as the discussions on in-situ formation and evolution of reactive Ga species as catalytic centers and the reaction mechanisms.

Abstract:Base metal catalyzed oxidative alkane dehydrogenation has emerged as a viable strategy for olefin synthesis for its usage of cheap catalysts, compatibility with various functional groups, and low reaction temperature. In this review, we discuss recent development of base metal catalyzed alkane dehydrogenation under oxidative conditions and their application in constructing complex molecules. Preparing valuable olefins from cheap and abundant alkane resources has long been a challenging task in organic synthesis, which mainly suffers from harsh reaction conditions and narrow scopes. Homogeneous transition metals catalyzed dehydrogenation of alkanes has attracted much attention for its excellent catalytic activities under relatively milder conditions. Among them, base metal catalyzed oxidative alkane dehydrogenation has emerged as a viable strategy for olefin synthesis for its usage of cheap catalysts, compatibility with various functional groups, and low reaction temperature. Abstract:With the rapid economic development, the excessive use of fossil fuels and the massive emission of carbon di-oxide (CO2), as a greenhouse gas, have aroused a series of environment issues. Direct CO2 hydrogenation to value-added chemicals using renewable energy is an effective strategy to reduce CO2 and dependence on fossil fuels. Among these value-added chemicals, light olefins and liquid fuels have attracted the attention of both academic and industry as one of the most important chemicals in our daily life. Light olefins and liquid fuels can be produced from CO2 hydrogenation via a modified Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (FTs) route or via a methanol-mediated process. Compared with methanol-mediated process, FTs route is favorable for CO2 hydrogenation to light olefins and liquid fuels due to its lower energy consumption and higher conversion efficiency. Although great progress has been made in CO2 hydrogenation to light olefins and liquid fuels, designing efficient catalysts to effectively control the activation of C-O bond and the growth of C-C bond remains a great challenge. This review highlights research advances in thermocatalytic hydrogenation of CO2 to light olefins and liquid fuels via modified FTs pathway. The catalyst design, reaction mechanism, catalyst component, and key factors affecting catalytic performance are summarized and analyzed for CO2 hydrogenation to light olefins and liquid fuels. The purpose of this review is to provide a comprehensive view on catalysts for CO2 hydrogenation to light olefins and liquid fuels to inspire the development of novel catalysts in the future.

Abstract:Light alkanes are the important intermediates of many refinery processes and their catalytic dehydrogenation gives corresponding alkenes. The aim behind this experimentation is to investigate reaction behavior of mixed alkanes during direct catalytic dehydrogenation and emphasis has been given to enhance propene. Bi-metallic zeolite supported catalyst Pt-Sn/ZSM-5 was prepared by sequentional impregnation method and characterized by BET, EDS and XRD. Direct dehydrogenation reaction is highly endothermic and its conversion is thermodynamically limited. Results showed that the increase in temperature increases the conversion to some extent but there is no overall effect on selectivity of propene. Increase in time-on-stream (TOS) remarkably improves propene selectivity at the expense of lower conversion. The performances of bi-metallic zeolite based catalyst largely affected by coke deposition. The presence of butane and ethane adversely affected propane conversion. Optimum propene selectivity is about 48 %, obtained at 600 oC and time-on-stream 10 h.

Abstract:As the world gradually changes to zero net emissions, CO 2 conversion plays a crucial role in providing energy and chemical supply while meeting environmental requirements. Researchers attach great importance to the development of innovative CO 2 hydrogenation catalysts, and the pace of development in this field is also accelerating. The catalytic reduction of CO 2 by H 2 can lead to the formation of light olefins, which is generally following the mainly two routes: CH 3 OH-mediated route and CO-mediated route, while the active phase, key intermediate and reaction mechanisms for CO 2 activation and C-C coupling for synthesis of light olefins is still ambiguous. In this paper, the recent key advances in catalytic CO 2 hydrogenation to light olefins is reviewed in terms of the catalyst design, catalytic performance and reaction mechanism, which provide a deep understanding of the new catalytic system for CO 2 conversion. In addition, the challenges and opportunities for future research associated with CO 2 hydrogenation to light olefins are also discussed.

Abstract:Alkane dehydrogenation to alkene represents a promising alternative route for conventional petroleum cracking processes heavily reliant on fossil resources. This Concept outlines the latest advancements of novel alkane dehydrogenation routes that offer potential solutions to intrinsic problems existing in routine direct dehydrogenation or oxidative dehydrogenation reactions, including CO2 assisted alkane dehydrogenation, chemical looping alkane oxidative dehydrogenation, dual‐path dehydrogenation and auto‐accelerated multiple alkane dehydrogenation route. These novel reaction routes exhibit unique advantages in enhancing the activity, selectivity and stability of the alkane dehydrogenation reaction system. The rational design of novel catalysts and proper choice of the reaction condition that well‐fitted these reaction routes is the key for achieving highly efficient and stable alkane dehydrogenation process. These present examples in this manuscript also highlight the importance of fundamental in‐depth understandings on the mechanism and structure‐function relations, which is the foundation for developing novel alkane dehydrogenation routes for practical applications.

Abstract:Valorization of nitrous oxide (N2O), a potent greenhouse gas, through the oxidative dehydrogenation of light alkanes such as methane and propane to produce light olefins (ethylene and propylene), presents a promising technique for both environmental mitigation and valuable chemical production. This review compares the difference between N2O and O2 as an oxidant in detail. Moreover, recent advances and challenges in the utilization of N2O as a mild oxidant for olefin production are presented, focusing on two key reactions: the oxidative dehydrogenation of propane (ODHP) to produce propylene and the oxidative coupling of methane (OCM) to produce ethylene. The catalyst developments and reaction mechanisms driving these conversions are explored in detail. By highlighting the latest studies, we propose a promising strategy to disentangle the activity-selectivity trade-off by redox center separation strategies in catalyst development. This comprehensive review aims to provide insights into rational catalyst design for sustainable chemical engineering processes with N2O utilization.

Abstract:The catalytic hydrogenation of CO2 with renewable H2 is considered as one of the most practical approaches for the reduction of CO2 and the synthesis of valuable chemicals and fuels. Among the value-added products, olefins and aromatics are highly attractive as essential industrial feedstocks. CO2 hydrogenation to olefins and aromatics mainly undergoes a CO2-modified Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (CO2-FTS) route or a methanol-mediated (MeOH) route, but is often limited by low selectivity and catalyst deactivation. In this review, we first overview the reaction mechanisms and key intermediates along the CO2-FTS and MeOH routes. For each route, we summarize the recent progress toward the catalyst development as well as the optimization of reaction conditions. We conclude the review by identifying challenges and opportunities with an emphasis on approaches for exceeding the product distribution limit, suppressing the catalyst deactivation, and improving the feasibility of low-pressure operation by continuous consumption of key intermediates.

Abstract:Products made from light olefins play an important role in our daily lives. Traditional light olefins production based on stream crackers and fluid catalytic cracking suffer from high energy consumption and CO2 emissions. Thereby, the continually increasing demand of light olefins needs to be met through more environmentally sustainable procedures. On‐purpose production routes are a preferred choice among petrochemicals manufacturers, being energy efficient and having lower carbon footprint. Among them, oxidative dehydrogenation (ODH) of light olefins is a thermodynamically favourable exothermic process as compared to non‐oxidative routes. They can be operated at lower temperatures and has low coke deposition on catalyst, thereby resisting rapid catalyst deactivation. Herein, we have analysed various catalytic systems utilised in the oxidative dehydrogenation process. We have reviewed role of support, chemical composition of catalyst, presence of dopant, oxidation state of active metal, controlled surface modification by oxidative and reductive pretreatments, and reaction factors for each system. The performance of various catalytic systems for ODH of ethane, propane and butane in the presence of O2, CO2, N2O and special oxidants have been reviewed. A short critical overview on emerging on‐purpose routes for the production of renewable 1,3 butadiene has also been discussed.

Abstract:This scientific review delves into the innovative realm of polyolefins/light alkanes valorization through its catalytic dehydrogenation employing pincer-ligated iridium organometallic complexes. These widely studied catalysts exhibit outstanding properties, although the intrinsic characteristics of homogeneous catalysis (such as a challenging product-catalyst separation, poor applicability to continuous-flow processes and low recyclability) limit their activity and industrial application, as well as their thermal stability. Through the complex's immobilization on inorganic supports these downsides have been bypassed, harnessing the true potential of these catalysts, affording more selective and stable catalysts in addition to facilitating their implementation in industrial processes. The findings described herein contribute to the advancement in the understanding of catalytic processes in hydrocarbon transformations, offering promising avenues for sustainable and selective production of valuable chemicals intermediates from readily available feedstocks.
