Abstract:A method based on close loop control of four degrees of freedom (4DF) is proposed to enhance angular and translational stability of beams in multi-beam microscopy including STED, RESOLFT and CARS, etc. Deviations of multi-beams can be measured and corrected by our module, which is composed of four degrees of freedom position sensitive detectors (4DF PSD) and two actuator mirrors (AM) with motor and piezo servos. An output crosslink matrix obtained by a self-learning process is used to control four actuators to compensate for 4DF independently in beam deviations. We realize a standard deviation within about 2 mu m at the entrance pupil plane (a spatial optical path of 180 cm for the whole system) using a compact stabilization system, which is equivalent to around 3 nm at the sample plane under the 100x objective lens with a focal length of 2 mm, corresponding to an improvement of stability by an order of magnitude. Our method can react fast in real time and compensate for large disturbances caused by air agitation or temperature variation.

Abstract:Ultrashort laser pulse has been widely used in various applications. Its parameters, such as the pulse duration and the spectral bandwidth, should be controlled accurately in order to achieve high spatial and temporal resolution, as well as high local field intensity. In this paper, we have proposed a method to trace the propagation of ultrashort pulses through optical systems, especially the complex optics. The approach, in which both the material's dispersion and optical aberrations are taken into consideration, is developed based on the geometrical ray-tracing combined with wave theories. This method is validated by simulating the propagation of a femtosecond pulse through a specific practical imaging system. As the numerical result shows that the spatial-temporal performances of pulses are influenced greatly by optical elements, the calibration arrangement is employed to compensate for those undesired distortions. The negative dispersion of the optical grisms (the combination of gratings and prisms) is utilized in the calibration process to offset the positive dispersion introduced by lenses. The final result shows effectiveness of the correction.

Abstract:For smoothing and shaping the on-target laser patterns flexibly in high-power laser drivers, a scheme has been developed that includes a zoom lens array and two-dimensional smoothing by spectral dispersion (SSD). The size of the target pattern can be controlled handily by adjusting the focal length of the zoom lens array, while the profile of the pattern can be shaped by fine tuning the distance between the target and the focal plane of the principal focusing lens. High-frequency stripes inside the pattern caused by beamlet interference are wiped off by spectral dispersion. Detailed simulations indicate that SSD works somewhat differently for spots of different sizes. For small spots, SSD mainly smooths the intensity modulation of low-to-middle spatial frequency, while for large spots, SSD sweeps the fine speckle structure to reduce nonuniformity of middle-to-high frequency. Spatial spectra of the target patterns are given and their uniformity is evaluated. (C) 2011 Optical Society of America

Abstract:The performances of the smoothing of small target spots with a lens array (LA) and two-dimensional smoothing by spectral dispersion (2-D SSD) in frequency-tripled high-power laser driver are numerically studied. Intensity distributions and spatial power spectra of the spots are analyzed. Simulative results show that LA can reduce the near-field nonuniformity of the beam and control the envelope of on-target intensity distribution. The 2-D SSD has obvious effects in eliminating high-contrast intensity modulation, even in the case that the spots are very small. The results indicate that SSD mainly smoothes the intensity modulation at low-to-middle spatial frequency for small spots, and this would lead to the modifying of the spot profile, while for large spots, SSD sweeps the fine speckle structure to reduce nonuniformity at middle-to-high frequency. These results are valuable for choosing the suitable beam smoothing method in indirect-drive experiment.

Abstract:Lasers have enjoyed from their very beginning a preeminent spot in the physical sciences not only for their obvious and by now ubiquitous technological role, but also as a testing ground for new and far reaching ideas. Haken’s felicitous characterization of the laser as the trailblazer of Synergetics was advanced in recognition of the laser’s conceptual contributions to our present understanding of pattern formation and cooperative phenomena [1–3]. The early focus of theoretical laser studies was on symmetry breaking phenomena in the time domain, and the field of laser instabilities that grew in response to the pioneering works of the early 1960’s came to be identified closely with the study of output pulsations and dynamical chaos [4].

Abstract:We investigate synchronous first and second order pulsed Raman lasers that can achieve frequency spacing of up to 1000 cm(-1) for CARS microscopy applications. In particular, we focus on analytical and numerical analysis of pulsed stability derived for Raman lasers by using dispersion-managed telecom fibers and pumping at near 1530 nm telecom wavelengths. We show the evolution of the first and second order Stokes signals at the output for different peak pump power and the net anomalous dispersion combinations. We determine the stability condition for dispersion-managed synchronous Raman lasers up to second order. The results show that the stable second order Raman Stokes pulses with 0.02 W to 0.1 W peak power and 1 ps to 2.1 ps pulse width can be achieved in proposed dispersion-managed systems. Abstract:We have implemented a long-term frequency stabilization system for external cavity diode laser (ECDL) based on mode boundary detection method. In this system, the saturated absorption spectroscopy was used. The current and the grating of the ECDL were controlled by a computer-based feedback control system. By checking any mode boundaries in the spectrum, the control system determined how to adjust current to avoid mode hopping. This procedure was executed periodically to ensure the long-term stabilization of ECDL in the absence of mode hops. This laser diode system without antireflection-coating had over operated in the condition of long-term mode hopping free stabilization for almost 400 hours. Last year, we have added template matching technics to the system. The ECDL stabilization time has been extended to almost 1200 hours without any manual intervention further. This is a significant improvement of ECDL frequency stabilization system. This technique is very useful in some applications such as laser atomic cooling and atom fountain etc.

Abstract:Ultrafast lasers enable a wide range of physics research and the manipulation of short pulses is a critical part of the ultrafast tool kit. Current methods of laser pulse shaping are usually considered separately in either the spatial or the temporal domain, but laser pulses are complex entities existing in four dimensions, so full freedom of manipulation requires advanced forms of spatiotemporal control. We demonstrate through a combination of adaptable diffractive and reflective optical elements - a liquid crystal spatial light modulator (SLM) and a deformable mirror (DM) - decoupled spatial control over the pulse front (temporal group delay) and phase front of an ultra-short pulse was enabled. Pulse front modulation was confirmed through autocorrelation measurements. This new adaptive optics technique, for the first time enabling in principle arbitrary shaping of the pulse front, promises to offer a further level of control for ultrafast lasers.

Abstract:Large energetic laser facilities provide an amazing tool for bringing matter into high energy density states but achieving a good energy conversion requires to optically smooth the high-power laser beams. Optical smoothing reduces the laser spatial and temporal coherences, allowing to mitigate the development of unwanted laser–plasma instabilities (LPI). Two schemes have been mainly developed: polarization smoothing and smoothing by spectral dispersion. Here, we focus on the latter. Smoothing by spectral dispersion consists in broadening the spectrum usually through a sinusoidal phase modulation and dispersing it with an optical grating. It is usually considered that the modulation frequency should be equal to the inverse of the time delay of the grating, because it maximizes the number of uncorrelated speckles patterns at a given bandwidth. However, current optical smoothing designs are still not sufficient for mitigating LPI. Because the optical smoothing system possesses degrees of freedom, we propose to improve the optical smoothing efficiency by a better tuning of those parameters. Considering the Laser Mégajoule optical system framework, we show that an increase in the modulation frequency allows a better efficiency of the smoothing while keeping the same bandwidth. We assess the efficiency by looking at a better mitigation of the stimulated Brillouin scattering that, due to its dangerousness in hohlraums developed for inertial confinement fusion applications in the indirect drive scheme, serves as a witness instability.

Abstract:Multimode optical fibers represent the ideal platform for transferring multidimensional light states. However, dispersion degrades the correlations between the light's degrees of freedom, thus limiting the effective transport of ultrashort pulses between distant nodes of optical networks. Here, we demonstrate that tailoring the spatiotemporal structure of ultrashort light pulses can overcome the physical limitations imposed by both chromatic and modal dispersion in multimode optical fibers. We synthesize these light states with predefined spatial and chromatic dynamics through applying a sequence of transformations to shape the optical field in all its dimensions. Similar methods can also be used to overcome dispersion processes in other physical settings like acoustics and electron optics. Our results will enable advancements in laser-based technologies, including multimode optical communications, imaging, ultrafast light-matter interactions, and high brightness fiber sources.

Abstract:We unveil a powerful method for stabilization of laser injection locking based on sensing variations in the output beam ellipticity of an optically seeded laser. The effect arises due to an interference between the seeding beam and the injected laser output. We demonstrate the method for a commercial semiconductor laser without the need for any internal changes to the readily-operational injection locked laser system that was utilized. The method can also be used to increase the mode-hop free tuning range of lasers, and has the potential to fill a void in the low-noise laser industry.

Abstract:An improved method for stabilizing a frequency-quadrupled 214.5-nm tunable diode laser system is reported.Improvements to the method include a homemade logic circuit and the use of a Fabry-Perot optical spectrum analyzer as a transfer cavity.Lasers locked with this method exhibit megahertz-level frequency stability measured with an optical frequency comb referenced to a cesium atomic standard.The laser can be locked for hours to days, depending on experiment requirements.Being relatively inexpensive, stable, and robust, the control method can be applied to stabilizing essentially all lasers of deep ultraviolet wavelengths.
Active Stabilization of a Diode Laser Injection Lock

Abstract:We report on a device to electronically stabilize the optical injection lock of a semiconductor diode laser. Our technique uses as discriminator the peak height of the laser's transmission signal on a scanning Fabry-Perot cavity and feeds back to the diode current, thereby maintaining maximum optical power in the injected mode. A two-component feedback algorithm provides constant optimization of the injection lock, keeping it robust to slow thermal drifts and allowing fast recovery from sudden failures such as temporary occlusion of the injection beam. We demonstrate the successful performance of our stabilization method in a diode laser setup at 399 nm used for laser cooling of Yb atoms. The device eases the requirements on passive stabilization and can benefit any diode laser injection lock application, particularly those where several such locks are employed.

Laser Offset Stabilization with Chip-Scale Atomic Diffractive Elements

Abstract:Achieving precise and adjustable control over laser frequency is an essential requirement in numerous applications such as precision spectroscopy, quantum control, and sensing. In many such applications it is desired to stabilize a laser with a variable detuning from an atomic line. In this study, we employ an offset-stabilization scheme by utilizing phase contrast spectroscopy in microfabricated atomic diffractive elements vapor-cells. The spectroscopic response of such a device generates oscillating optical fringes, providing multiple optical frequency stabilization points across a bandwidth of tens of gigahertz, centered around the absorption resonances of Rb. Using this device, we demonstrate laser stabilization at various offset frequencies with instabilities reaching sub-megahertz levels. We further explore the fundamental limitations of our hybrid atomic-photonic device, drawing parallels to birefringent and dichroic spectroscopy apparatuses, which are commonly employed for offset stabilization. Our system showcases a broad offset lock bandwidth, a highly compact footprint, scalability to chip-scale production, and the ability to operate without reliance on magnetic fields. These attributes pave the way for a multitude of applications in quantum technologies.

Abstract:Laser diode injection-locking is a commonly used method to amplify laser light, while preserving its spectral properties. Fluctuations in the environmental conditions can cause injection-locking to fail, especially when operating with low seed powers or with a swept seed frequency. We present a method inspired by the Hänsch-Couillaud scheme to monitor and actively stabilize the conditions required for injection-locking a laser diode. Using only a few optical components, our scheme can run continuously in the background and is modulation-free. We demonstrate its efficacy by showing its robustness to large fluctuations in diode temperature, seed frequency and power, effectively extending the reliable operating range and stability over time.

Abstract:We uncover a surprising gap in optics with regards to angular dispersion (AD) that has persisted for decades. A systematic examination of pulsed optical-field configurations classified according to their three lowest dispersion orders resulting from AD (the axial phase velocity, group velocity, and group-velocity dispersion) reveals that the majority of possible classes of fields have eluded optics thus far. This gap is due in part to the limited technical reach of the standard components that provide AD such as gratings and prisms, but due in part also to misconceptions regarding the set of physically admissible field configurations that can be accessed via AD. For example, it has long been thought that AD cannot yield normal group-velocity dispersion in free space. To rectify this state of affairs, we introduce a 'universal AD synthesizer': a pulsed-beam shaper that produces a wavelength-dependent propagation angle with arbitrary spectral profile, thereby enabling access to all physically admissible field configurations realizable via AD. This universal AD synthesizer is a versatile tool for preparing pulsed optical fields for dispersion compensation, optical signal processing, and nonlinear optics.
