Abstract:Steels are commonly used in high-performance demanding applications due to their favourable mechanical properties. Various surface engineering techniques have been developed for steels, among which chromizing is an affordable high-throughput case-hardenig process for improved surface hardness and wear resistance while retaining the substrate ductility and toughness. In this work, tribological testing along with nano- and micro-indentation and morphological and composional characterisation were used to understand the effects of the chromizing process on the AISI 1095 carbon steel, 52100 bearing steel and A2, D2 and M2 tool steels. The results of this study demonstrate that the chromizing treatment of low-cost 1095 and 52100 steels significantly improves their wear and hardness properties to a level comparable to the more costly tool steels. While chromizing also increased the hardness of the tool steels, it had little improvement on the wear resistance for the D2 and M2 tool steels.

Abstract:For parts of machines and equipment operating under the influence of aggressive media, abrasive, high temperatures, the creation of a hard, wear-resistant surface is an urgent task. Cobalt is used as a binder to create hard alloy materials that work under these conditions. It was of interest to evaluate the possibility of using cobalt as an additive in complex thermal diffusion chromium plating of structural steel. The article describes the features of thermal diffusion saturation of steel X35CrNi2-3 with chromium and cobalt at a temperature of 1000°C. A technique for analyzing the obtained coating is presented, based on the possibilities of X-ray spectral microanalysis of the diffusion layer on transverse microsections of the obtained samples. The elemental composition of the diffusion layer was monitored using the JEOL JSM-6460 LV universal scanning (scanning) electron microscope. The microstructure was studied using the optical metallographic microscope Axio Observer D1.m. The X-ray phase analysis was carried out with the Rigaku Ultima IV diffractometer. The hardness measurement was carried out with the FM-800 microhardness tester at a load of 50 g. Data were obtained on the distribution of chromium and cobalt in the surface layer of steel. It is shown that the resulting thermal diffusion coating consists mainly of a substitutional solid solution based on Cr‒Fe‒Co with bcc lattice and chromium carbides. The average diffusion coefficients of chromium in the α-phase of chromium were determined to be DCr = 3,22·10‒15 м2/с; in the γ-phase of iron DCr = 9,41·10‒15 м2/с. The diffusion coefficient of cobalt in the γ-phase of iron DCo = 7,89·10‒15 м2/с. The depth of the outer coating on the sample was about 15–20 μm, the depth of the diffusion layer of chromium in the base metal was about 70 μm, and that of cobalt was about 40 μm. The maximum hardness of the outer surface layer was 1740 HV, the diffusion layer in the base metal was 900–560 HV, and the base metal was about 510 HV.

Abstract:The possibility of acceleration of processes of thermal diffusion chromizing of steels by introducing additions (electron and oxygen anion emitters) into the saturating mixture is considered. A microscopic x-ray spectrum analysis of specimens chromized in powder mixtures with and without emitters is performed. The composition and the thickness of the diffusion layer are determined. It is shown experimentally that electric current emerges in the filler at the saturation temperature. The influence of the intrinsic thermionic field on the diffusion processes is explained.

Abstract:The formation of protective Cr2O3 layer was usually retarded in the high temperature steam oxidation of boiler tube materials. This condition makes the oxidation rate higher than that in dry condition. Therefore in this work, chromizing process is introduced to diffuse chromium on the surface of boiler steel so that it can act as a reservoir for the formation of Cr2O3 layer. The chromizing process was conducted on T91 steel by exposing it into alumina crucible. The crucible was exposed at different temperature (600°C-1050°C) under argon environment in the crucible that contains the chromizing mixture powder of masteralloy Cr, activator NH4Cl and filler Al2O3. It was found that Cr diffusion was happened at higher temperature and it formed Cr carbide on the surface. It also clarified that this chromizing process can prevent the retardation of Cr2O3 layer.

Abstract:To extend the applications of 316L stainless steel in corrosive environments and correlate the corrosion resistance with composition and microstructure, homogeneous Cr-rich layer with the thickness of 75 μm was fabricated on 316L stainless steel by pack chromizing and post heat treatment. The chromizing layer was mainly composed of FeCr solid solution. Post heat treatment eliminated the precipitates and Cr-depletion in the chromizing layer. The corrosion behaviors were studied by electrochemical measurements and corrosion morphology observation. The pitting corrosion in Cl− containing solutions was avoided after chromizing treatment, which was ascribed to the reduced sensitivity of Cr-rich surface to Cl− ions. The higher Cr concentration in the modified layer also improved the long-term stability of corrosion resistance. After immersion in NaCl solution for 24 days, the charge transfer resistance of chromizing sample was higher than that of 316L by a factor of 8.19. In addition, the free corrosion potential shifted to the positive direction after post heat treatment, and the corrosion current density was also reduced to 0.066 μA/cm2. The further improvement on anticorrosion performance was attributed to the homogeneous microstructure.

Abstract:Chromium (Cr) hard coatings are frequently used for cold shaping and metal cutting in industries. This research work has been performed with the intention of investigating the feasibility of using complex chromium testimony used for phosphating and covering framing apparatus made from a carbon device prepared. Besides, it has been tried to determine the conveying limit of covered phosphate and chromium as well as to evaluate the wear mechanism. This work shows the improvement of wear resistance storing chromium hard covering on materials. Eight apparatus were made, engraved, solidified, tempered, chromed, phosphate, and assembled. The apparatus was installed in machines followed by recording the produced stroke numbers and conducting the tests in grease-free condition. The mechanical characteristics of hardware steel were increased solely by heating it. Instruments made of carbon device steel performed better in terms of erosion, wear, hostile-to-stay parts, and execution when hard chrome plating was used. The strong chromium plating with its excellent antiwear capabilities and high wear obstruction speaks to the optimal arrangement from the standpoint of hardware steel, as well as from the perspective of workpiece surface quality.

Abstract:The results of metallographic and x-ray phase studies of 35Kh2N3 steel samples after two-component thermal diffusion saturation with chromium and vanadium in mixtures of different compositions are presented. It is shown that when metallic chromium is replaced by ferrochromium, the structure and the phase composition of the coating change; the amount of carbide and nitride phases decreases and the amount of the Cr – Fe – V solid solution increases. The use of serpentine in the saturating mixture (an emitter of oxygen anions, which creates a flow of charged particles directed to the saturated part) elevates the depth of diffusion of chromium into the metal from 20 to 50 μm. The hardness of the coatings due to chromizing in metallic chromium powder with ferrovanadium and in a mixture of ferrochromium with ferrovanadium amounts to 2000 HV and 1750 HV , respectively.

Abstract:As a surface modification technique, chromization is often used in steels to improve their wear, corrosion, and oxidation resistances. High-entropy alloys (HEAs) with excellent properties can be applied in extreme environments, perhaps to further improve their resistance to external environments by chromization. In this work, the chromization of hot-rolled Fe40Mn20Cr20Ni20 HEA was carried out by pack cementation. A chromized coating of 120 µm with the body-centered cubic (BCC) structure and a diffusion layer of 30 µm were obtained by chromizing at 1473 K for 12 h. Based on the growth kinetics of the coating, the relationship between the thickness of the chromized coating and chromized temperature as well as the time was modeled to visualize. After chromization, due to the higher chromium content of the coating, the Vickers hardness of was increased from 150 HV0.1 of hot-rolled HEA to more than 500 HV0.1, the wear rate was significantly reduced, and the dominant wear mechanisms for both hot-rolled and chromized HEAs under three test environments involved abrasion and adhesive wears. Besides, the corrosion resistance was promoted in NaCl solution (3.5 wt%). Thereby, the present work provides guidances for chromization on HEAs.

Abstract:To improve the corrosion inhibition and wear resistance of materials, the pack cementation method was used to prepare chromized coatings on the surfaces of high-carbon T9 steel and low-carbon SPCC steel. The results showed the formation of a uniform and dense double-layer structure with a thickness of ~10 μm on the surfaces of two different types of steel. The coating layer for T9 steel was mainly composed of Cr23C6 and Cr7C3, while that for SPCC steel was mainly composed of Cr23C6 and Fe-Cr solid solution. Additionally, both of the steels showed different hardness distributions. The hardness measurements of the outer layers of the T9 steel and SPCC steel were ~1737.72 HV and 1771.91 HV, while the hardness values of the secondary layers were 1378.31 HV and 448.52 HV, respectively. The polarization curves in 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution demonstrated the better corrosion resistance of the chromized coating. Chromizing increased the corrosion potential by ~0.2 V and reduced the corrosion current density by one order of magnitude. Under the presence of an 8 N load, the friction factor before and after the chromizing of T9 steel was about 0.69, and the mass wears were 2 mg and 0.6 mg, respectively. Meanwhile, the friction factor of the SPCC steel before and after chromizing was about 0.73, with respective mass wears of 2 mg and 2.9 mg. The wear resistance of T9 steel after chromizing was superior, but it became worse after chromizing for the SPCC steel.

Abstract:A chromium diffusion coating was applied on an oxide dispersion strengthened ferritic-martensitic (ODS-FM) steel to improve oxidation resistance at high temperature. By carrying out physical vapor deposition followed by inter-diffusion heat treatment, a thin Cr-rich carbide layer was produced on the ODS-FM steel. Both the as-received and surface-modified specimens were oxidation-tested at 650 °C in air and steam environments for 500 h. The surface-modified specimens showed improved oxidation resistance in both environments. In an air environment, both conditions exhibited a thin and continuous chromia layer, but the formation of Cr2O3 and (Mn, Cr)3O4 nodules resulted in greater weight gain for the as-received specimen. In a steam environment, weight gain increased for both the as-received and surface-modified specimen. Especially, the as-received specimen showed much greater weight gain with the formation of a thick oxide layer consisted of outer Fe-rich oxide and inner (Fe, Cr, Mn) oxide layers. On the other hand, a thin and continuous chromia layer was formed for the surface-modified specimen, which resulted in much less weight gain in a steam environment.

Influence of the composition of the cumulative lattice during thermal diffusion chromiing on the depth of the diffusion layer

Abstract:Presents the results of experiments on improving the technology of thermal diffusion chromium plating of structural steels through the use of an internal emission field created in the technological backfill during heating. To create a field in the separating part of the technological backfill, aluminum oxide was completely replaced by mixtures of two compositions: a mixture of scheelite (CaWO4) and serpentine (Mg3Si2O7); a mixture of scheelite (CaWO4), serpentine (Mg3Si2O7), MgO, dicalcium silicate (γ-2•CaO•SiO2). The choice of these materials was based on the results of preliminary experiments on measuring the thermionic current in them. Saturation of samples of steel 35CrNi2-3 with chromium was carried out at a temperature of 1000°C for 24 hours. For both variants of technological fillings, the ab-sence of sintering and good knockout of parts were noted. The chemical composition of the diffusion layer on metal samples was controlled using a JEOL JSM-6460LV universal scanning (scanning) electron microscope. The micro-hardness of the coatings was measured using an FM-800 microhardness tester. The results show that the additional use of cumulative lattices of nickel and nichrome for thermal diffusion chromium plating provides an increase in the depth of chromium diffusion by 1.5 times when saturated in the backfill of the same composition. In this case, the lattice material has little effect on the depth of chromium diffusion, but it influences the intensity of surface microalloying with nickel. The electron yield work of nichrome X20H80, equal to 4.5 eV, has been determined. It was found that the hardness of the diffusion layers formed on the surface correlates with the content of chromium and nickel in them. The hardness of the chrome layer is 790±10 HV and 820±10 HV, using nickel and nichrome cumulative lattices, respective-ly. In the case of saturation without grids, the hardness is 50 and 20 HV respectively lower.

Abstract:The TD (Thermal Diffusion) salt bath process is used to obtain a super hard carbide coating on the material surface by utilizing the mechanism of metal thermal diffusion. In this paper, chromium carbide coating was prepared on P20 hot-pressing die steel by the TD salt bath chromizing process. Characterization of the modified surface layer was made by means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDS), a micro-hardness tester and an automatic scratch tester. The influence rules of different salt bath times and temperatures on the growth thickness of the cladding layer were explored through experiments, and the optimum salt bath process scheme was determined as a temperature of 960 °C and time of 6 h. The chromium carbide coating with a thickness similar to that of chromium plating was prepared, and the average thickness of the coating was about 8–10 μm. The results showed that hardness and bonding strength of chromium carbide coating are higher than that of electroplated chromium coating. The combination of chromium carbide coating and matrix is metallurgical, while the electroplated chromium coating is physical. Immersion corrosion test results show that both coatings have good corrosion resistance in a 65% nitric acid solution.

The experience of commercial operation of pipes manufactured from diffusion chromized and heat-hardened steel 14 MoV6-3; on the heating surfaces of the supercritical pressure boilers are generalized. Abstract:To solve the problem about the surface corrosion and wear of steel parts in the transmission system of helicopter, based on chromium plating technology of plating process,the chromium plating samples were prepared with three better groups of temperature and current density by means of different formula of chromium plating bath. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used to study the microstructure and composition of specimen coating. The experimental results show that the crystalline structure of chromium layer is body centered cubic and the crystal is stable, the performances from different specimens including rigidity, thickness, corrosion resistance, antifriction and hydrogen brittleness were tested, the effect of hard chromium plating technology parameter (T,T) on microstructure and properties of steel-based chromium plating was also investigated. The result indicates that : 45 similar to 50A/dm(2) current density and 58 similar to 60 degrees C temperature of plating coat are optimal condition for obtaining higher brightness, rigidity and thickness, lower porosity, better corrosion resistance and antifriction.

Abstract:The effect of chromium content on phase transformations in low-carbon high-strength steel for shipbuilding has been studied. Under industrial conditions, two rolled sheets 50 mm thick were manufactured from steel with a chromium content of 1.08% and 0.42% using hot rolling technology, followed by furnace hardening and high-temperature tempering, standard mechanical properties and performance characteristics were determined. With the help of optical and transmission electron microscopy, the structural features of steel were revealed.

The main kinetic laws of the process - the effect of temperature and time of chromium plating on the thickness of the coatings - have been studied. It is shown that the main phases of the coating are chromium carbides and nitrides with surface microhardness HV up to 15 GPa. The tribotechnical properties of the obtained coatings on rollers - friction pairs are determined.

Abstract:The phase transformations occurring in a 0.45 wt.% C plain steel subjected to plasma nitriding at 540–560 °C for 5.5 h, followed by a salt bath thermoreactive deposition and diffusion (TRD) chromizing process at 500 °C or 550 °C (a process referred to as low-temperature chromizing or duplex chromizing) was investigated by means of optical microscopy(OM), scanning electron microscopy(SEM), X-ray energy dispersive spectroscopy(EDS), and X-ray diffraction. It was found that a CrN compound layer with an average thickness of 7.4 μm and an average micro-hardness of 1476 HV0.01 was formed in the prior plasma nitrided compound layer by low-temperature chromizing at 550 °C for 6 h. The chromized coating as a whole was found consisting of three sub-layers, namely the outer CrN layer, the intermediate diffusional layer, and the inner residual nitrided compound layer, all formed in the prior nitrided compound layer, and with the inner sub-layer vanishing by prolonging the chromizing time. The intermediate diffusional layer formed at the initial stages of TRD was seen “black” under OM (hence is called “black zone”), and found consisting of α-Fe as a major phase. The self-exhaustion of the “black zone” promoted the chromium atom diffusion deeper into the substrates. The transformation paths involved in the decomposition of the prior nitrided compound layer was likely to be ε-Fe2–3N→γ′-Fe4N→α-Fe; and the high hardness of the chromized coating was attributed to a large amount of nano-sized and evenly distributed CrN grains generated in the compound layer.

Abstract:Cr/low-carbon steel surface composites were prepared by aqueous solution co-deposition and high-temperature solid-state diffusion technology, and the macro rule of the solid-state diffusion of chromium on the surface of low-carbon steel was analyzed. The molecular dynamics (MD) method was used to simulate and calculate the diffusion process of the Cr/Fe interface, and the macro and micro diffusion mechanisms were analyzed. The results show that the diffusion of the chromium in iron is the combined action of the temperature, crystal structure and lattice distortion, and the diffusion coefficients of chromium in alpha-Fe and gamma-Fe have little difference. The vacancy diffusion mechanism of the first adjacent transition is the main diffusion mode. In practice, chromium atoms diffuse along the grain boundaries of the low-carbon steel matrix and provide pinning at the grain boundaries to prevent grain growth. The simulation law is in good agreement with the experimental law. The variation law of the average diffusion coefficient of chromium atoms with temperature is obtained. The diffusion rate of chromium in the bcc crystal structure is obviously higher than that in the fcc crystal structure. In the same crystal structure, the diffusion coefficient of chromium increases with the increase in temperature. However, in the lattice transition temperature region, the diffusion coefficient of chromium gradually decreases with the increase in temperature until the end of the transformation.
