Abstract:Intimate partner violence (IPV) is recognized as a major public health and social problem globally, with consequences for the individual, family, and society. But there is relatively little research on IPV in China. The aim of this study was to estimate the prevalence of different types of violence among women and to determine the risk factors and the association with depression. A cross-sectional study among women who had ever been in a relationship was conducted in six provinces across the three regions of China from July to September 2018 using a self-completion questionnaire developed for the study. The provincial capital and one rural county were purposively selected in each province. Questionnaires were distributed in hospitals and public places. The Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D) was used to measure depression. Data for 2,987 women were analyzed. The prevalence of psychological, physical, and sexual violence was 77.7%, 40.2%, and 11%, respectively: 52% had experienced two or three types of violence in their life. After adjustment, risk factors for all-type IPV were low occupational status, having one child or more, living in western provinces, having an income lower than partner's, and economic pressure. The prevalence of depression was 65.8% in women who experienced psychological violence, 69.5% for physical violence, and 75.8% for sexual violence. For psychological, physical, and sexual violence, the odds ratio for depression were 2.57 (95% confidence interval [CI] = [2.15, 3.07]), 2.07 [1.76, 2.43], and 2.26 [1.73, 2.95], respectively, after controlling for age, occupation, education attainment, and residence. There is a clear need to raise awareness about IPV and to develop approaches for prevention and management. The new Domestic Violence Law represents a step in the right direction.

Risk factors were low education attainment, having one child or more, residence in western provinces, having an income lower than the partner's, and economic pressure. The prevalence of severe depression was 18·3% (425/2322), 23·8% (286/1201), and 39·4% (130/330) in women experiencing psychological, physical and sexual violence, respectively. The odds of severe depression were 6·62 (95% CI 4·49–9·76) for psychological violence, 4·31 (3·39–5·48) for physical violence, and 5·47 (4·01–7·45) sexual violence, after controlling for age, occupation, education attainment, and residence.InterpretationThere is a clear need for measures to raise awareness and prevention of all types of IPV. Gender differences in intimate partner violence

Abstract:Objectives:To study the incidence of intimate partner violence (IPV),compare the gender differences,analyze the social psychological factors which affect the happening of IPV.Methods:With the multi-stage stratified sampling,we randomly selected 2567 adults who were in or once in an intimate relationships,and in-vestigated them with a self-made demographic information questionnaire and the Chinese Version Conflict Tactics Scale (CTS-2s).Results:The total incidence of IPV was 50.88%;incidence of male violence against women was mostly equal to the female violence against male,with the majority being bidirectional IPV,but the sex forced di-mension of male against women was higher than female to male.Consultation,age and marital satisfaction were the protective factors of IPV,while risk factors were male income proportion,work status,family income,smoking quantity,male mental illness and so on.Conclusions:There is no gender difference in the total incidence of IPV, and mostly violence is bidirectional IPV.IPV is a result of combined action of various psychological social factors, and consultation,age and marital satisfaction are the protective factors of IPV.
Spousal Concordance in Adverse Childhood Experiences and the Association with Depressive Symptoms in Middle-Aged and Older Adults: Findings Across China, the US, and Europe

Abstract:Background Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are associated with higher depressive risks in adulthood. Whether respondents’ ACEs are associated with their own depressive symptoms in adulthood and whether this association extends to their spouses’ depressive symptoms remain unexplored. Methods Data were from China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS), the Health and Retirement Study (HRS), and the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE). ACEs were categorized into overall, intra-familial, and extra-familial ACEs. Correlations of couples’ ACEs were calculated using Cramer’s V and partial Spearman’s correlation. Associations of respondents’ ACEs with spousal depressive symptoms were assessed using logistic regression, and mediation analyses were conducted to explore the mediating role of respondents’ depressive symptoms. Results Significant associations between husbands’ ACEs and wives’ depressive symptoms, with odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of 2.09 (1.36–3.22) for 4 or more ACEs in CHARLS, and 1.25 (1.06–1.48) and 1.38 (1.06–1.79) for 2 or more ACEs in HRS and SHARE. However, wives’ ACEs were associated with husbands’ depressive symptoms only in CHARLS and SHARE. Findings in intra-familial and extra-familial ACEs were consistent with our main results. Additionally, respondents’ depressive symptoms mediated more than 20% of the effect of respondents’ ACEs on spousal depressive symptoms. Conclusion We found that ACEs were significantly correlated between couples. Respondents’ ACEs were associated with spousal depressive symptoms, with respondents’ depressive symptoms mediating the association. The bidirectional implications of ACEs on depressive symptoms should be considered within household and effective interventions are warranted.
Childhood adversity subtypes and violence victimization and perpetration among early adolescents in Shanghai, China

Abstract:Background This cross-sectional study aimed to identify adverse childhood experience (ACE) subtypes using variable- and person-centered approaches and examine the possible sex-differentiated associations with violence involvement as victim, perpetrator, and victim-perpetrator. Methods Adolescents aged 10–14 years in three junior high schools in Shanghai, China, were selected using a cluster sampling method in November and December 2017. Participants were surveyed anonymously using a computer-assisted self-interview approach via tablets. Thirteen items modified from the CDC-Kaiser ACE study were used to measure the ACEs. Results show subtypes as neglect, abuse, and household dysfunction by developing cumulative index score from the variable perspective and subgroups identified through the latent class analysis (LCA) from the person perspective. Logistic regression analyses were used to test the association between each ACE subtype and violence victimization and perpetration after adjusting for some demographic characteristics. Results A total of 1,700 participants were included in the final analysis. Approximately 1,322 (77.76 %) participants reported experiencing at least one ACE. The prevalence of neglect, abuse, and household dysfunction was 64.12 % ( n = 1090), 61.29 % ( n = 1042), and 18.24 % ( n = 310), respectively. Three classes were identified through the LCA: low exposure to all ACEs ( n = 854, 50.23 %), high exposure to emotional and physical abuse and neglect (n = 715, 42.06 %), and high exposure to all ACEs ( n = 131,7.71 %). After controlling the covariates, experiencing abuse, neglect, and household dysfunction was significantly related to violence victimization (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] = 3.19, 3.29, 2.37, P < 0.001) and victim-perpetrator (aOR = 3.48, 4.41, 5.16, P < 0.001). Adolescent violence perpetration was only found to be associated with being neglected (aOR = 2.37, P = 0.003) and suffering household dysfunction (aOR = 3.25, P < 0.001). LCA revealed the cumulative effects of ACEs on adolescent violence victimization and perpetration. Sex-stratified analysis indicate that girls were more vulnerable to the negative effects of ACEs, with a higher risk of perpetration among girls exposed to distinctive subtypes or multiple ACEs. Conclusions ACEs were ubiquitous and significantly associated with an elevated risk of violence victimization and perpetration during early adolescence. Future research should examine whether these associations persist over time and the intermediating mechanism from the perspectives of individual neurodevelopment, cognition and resilience ability, and social support.

Abstract:Introduction: Children of whose mothers exposed to adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are at increased risk for developmental problems. This study aims to investigate the relationship between types and patterns of maternal ACEs and preschool children's emotional and behavioral problems (EBPs) in China, and to explore gender differences associated with these problems. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, we selected 9,647 children from 36 preschools in three cities of Anhui province, China. Questionnaires were used to report the details of maternal ACEs and children's EBPs. We used the latent class analysis (LCA) to identify "patterns" in the types of maternal ACEs. Binomial logistic regressions was performed to examine the relationship between types and patterns of maternal ACEs and preschoolers' EBPs. Results: Latent class analysis (LCA) revealed four different classes of maternal ACEs. Logistic regression analysis showed that compared with the low ACEs class, children of mothers in the high abuse and neglect class had the highest risk of developing EBPs (OR = 5.93, 95%CI: 4.70-7.49), followed by moderate ACEs class (OR = 2.44, 95%CI: 1.98-3.00), and high household dysfunction class (OR = 2.16, 95%CI: 1.19-3.90). We found gender differences in the effects of high abuse and neglect/moderate ACEs class and maternal childhood physical abuse/neglect on children's EBPs, which had a stronger impact on EBPs in boys than girls (P<0.05). Discussion: This study supports and refines existing research that confirms an intergenerational association between types and patterns of maternal ACEs and children's EBPs in a large Chinese sample, so as to provide references for the early prevention and control of children's EBPs.

Abstract:Objective:To investigate the individual-family-social integrative factors associated with serious physical violence in marital relationships and provide a theoretical basis for early warning and intervention.Methods:Totally 93 people with domestic violence behavior were selected as violence-group and 92 people without domestic violence behaviors were selected in no-violence group.They were assessed with a self-designed questionnaire and the Conflict Tactics Scale(CTS-2),Childhood Trauma Questionnaire(CTQ),Alcohol Use Disorders Identification(AUDIT) Test and Personality Diagnosis Questionnaire-4(PDQ-4+) to evalute the related factors to serious physical violence in marriage,including individual factors [age,education,employment,alcohol abuse,committing crimes,and personality disorders analysis],family factors [childhood trauma,witness of parental violence,couple rights distribution,and financial pressure],and social factors[cognition of partner roles,cognition of domestic violence].Results:The proportions of people with alcohol abuse(22.6% vs.6.5%),committing crimes(12.9% vs.4.3%) and higher PDQ-4+ scores(65.6% vs.45.7%) were higher in the violence-group than the no-violence group(Ps<0.05).The violence group got higher scores in emotional abuse [(8.3±2.3) vs.(6.5±2.2)] and physical abuse [(7.7±3.0) vs.(6.0±2.3)] than the no-violence group(Ps<0.05).The proportion of people with witnessing parental violence(78.5% vs.44.5%),in relationship of either of the couple being the dictator(44.1% vs.20.7%),and under financial pressure(57.0% vs.15.2%) were higher in the violence-group than in the no-violence group(Ps<0.05).The violence group got higher scores in cognition of partner roles [(19.9±7.2) vs.(15.8±4.8)] and cognition of domestic violence [(15.8±6.9) vs.(13.2±3.9)] than the no-violence group(Ps<0.05).The equation of logistic regression analysis showed that people with witnessing parental violence,alcohol abuse,committing crimes,under financial pressure,in relationship of either of the couple being dictator,and with higher scores in personality analysis,cognition of partner roles and emotional abuse in childhood were likely to assault their intimate partners seriously(OR=1.30-16.19).Conclusion:It suggests that individual traits,family circumstance and social cognition are probably related to the behavior of serious physical assault towards partners in marriage.
The impact of childhood adversity on female‐perpetrated intimate partner violence in young adulthood

Abstract:Purpose A common conception of intimate partner violence (IPV) is that women rarely use violence against romantic partners, and when they do, this is usually in self‐defence. However, evidence demonstrates that women perpetrate IPV at least as frequently as men, particularly in young adult populations. Despite this, there is still a significant lack of research focusing on women's IPV perpetration, particularly in determining risk markers. The unique relationship between adversity in childhood and IPV perpetration has been recognized in males and it is thought that this relationship may be even more marked in females. The present study aimed to investigate this relationship to see whether experiencing increasing numbers of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) would be associated with higher incidence of female‐perpetrated IPV. Methods Exposure to ACEs and frequency of IPV perpetration was measured through an online survey of young adult females from the general population. Results Regression analysis revealed that ACEs did significantly predict the frequency of IPV perpetrated by females. The results showed that the more adversity a female has experienced in childhood, the greater their risk of IPV perpetration in young adulthood. Conclusions It is suggested that this relationship potentially exists because adversity in childhood impacts the individual's attachments and processing of social environments, thus resulting in dysfunctional, violent responses to relationship dilemmas throughout life. These results stress the importance of tailoring treatment strategies for female perpetrators to address potential childhood adversity in which their violence may be rooted.

Abstract:Abstract Victims of violence might have higher risks of revictimization, but this has been insufficiently examined among older populations. The present study used cross-sectional data among 3,157 U.S. Chinese older adults in Chicago, Illinois. Multiple logistic regression analyses were used to examine the relationships among subtypes (psychological, physical/sexual, financial exploitation, caregiver neglect) of child maltreatment (CM), intimate partner violence (IPV), and EM. Violence experiences were positively associated. CM psychological was positively associated with IPV psychological (OR 7.60, 95% CI 4.29-13.45) and EM psychological (OR 3.79, 95% CI 2.20-6.51). CM physical/sexual was positively associated with IPV physical/sexual (OR 1.86, 95% CI 1.02-3.38) and IPV physical/sexual was positively associated with EM physical/sexual (OR 8.54, 95% CI 3.53,20.64). EM financial exploitation was positively associated with all types of CM and IPV, whereas EM caregiver neglect has no significant association with any CM or IPV. Clinical and policy implications of the findings will be discussed.
Child Maltreatment in the Zhejiang Province of China: the Role of Parental Aggressive Tendency and a History of Maltreatment in Childhood

Abstract:This study aimed to explore the role of parental aggression and parental childhood maltreatment experience in the maltreatment of children in Zhejiang Province, eastern China. The study sites were two urban and two rural schools. Children aged ten to 16 years and their parents completed separate questionnaires, which included: parental childhood maltreatment; parental aggressive tendency; and maltreatment of children. Questionnaires were completed by 611 parents and 821 children. Fifty‐eight per cent of parents reported maltreatment of their children. Higher parental aggression scores were associated with an increased risk for all types of child maltreatment (relative risk ratios (RRRs) or odds ratios (ORs) ranged from 1.06–1.07 for each point higher on the aggression scale). Parental childhood maltreatment was significantly associated with an increased risk of moderate/severe physical maltreatment of children (OR = 1.80 (1.08, 3.00)); parental aggression was an explanatory factor for this association. Parental childhood maltreatment was positively associated with emotional maltreatment of children (OR = 1.89 (1.27, 2.83)). This was partly explained by parental aggression. In conclusion, high levels of child maltreatment were admitted by parents in China, suggesting the need for parenting education. Parents with a higher aggressive tendency were more likely to maltreat children. Parental aggressive tendency was an explanatory factor for the intergenerational transmission of maltreatment, indicating the possibility of identifying parents' aggressive tendencies for early prevention. © 2018 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.‘Explore[s] the role of parental aggression and parental childhood maltreatment experience in the maltreatment of children in Zhejiang Province’Key Practitioner Messages Child maltreatment of all types is common in China. Abstract:Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) affect children's development, and their harm to health is pervasive throughout the life course. To identify ACEs and their risk factors in Chinese household with or without parental mental illness. A controlled study was conducted among 181 young adults with parental mental illness (positive group) and 201 demographically matched individuals without parental mental illness (negative group). Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed to study the correlation between ACEs and their risk factors. The positive group suffered emotional abuse, domestic violence, bullying, and cumulative ACEs more frequently than the negative group. In the positive group, living in rural areas and having a low household economic status during childhood were identified as risk factors for cumulative ACEs, whereas a higher education level of the mother was a protective factor for cumulative ACEs in univariate analyses. Low household economic status remained an independent risk factor for cumulative ACEs in the positive group in multivariate analyses. Children living with parental mental illness are more vulnerable to ACEs, and our findings highlight the importance of socioeconomic factors in increasing the risk of ACEs. To alleviate the deleterious impact of parental mental illness on offspring, multidimensional supports are needed.

Abstract:Background: Although intergenerational transmission of ACEs among parents and their offspring have been extensively studied in the West, few studies have been conducted in China on preschool children and their parents, and explore the protective fact for the intergeneration transmission. Objective: Using latent class analysis and moderation model, this study examined the associations between patterns of adverse childhood experiences of Chinese preschool parents and behavioural problems in their children and whether coparenting quality plays a protective role in this relationship. Method: A retrospective study was conducted on 3091 parent–child dyads from 11 kindergartens in the northern, central, and southern Anhui provinces in China. Online questionnaires were used to collect the data. Parents reported adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and provided information on their children's behavioural problems and perceived coparenting quality. Latent class analysis and a moderating model were used to examine the associations between patterns of adverse childhood experiences of Chinese preschool parents and behavioural problems in their children, and the moderating role of coparenting quality. Results: Four classes were identified: a high ACEs group, a violent victimisation group, a child abuse and physical neglect group, and a low ACEs group. Increasing levels of co-parenting quality were associated with reduced parent-reported child behaviour problems for all classes, and that potentially buffering effect was significantly stronger for the low ACEs class than for children whose parents in high ACEs class. Conclusions: Exposure to high ACEs increases the risk of developing behavioural problems in offspring, and coparenting quality may serve as a protective mechanism for intergenerational transmission. Future research should develop and implement interventions to support disadvantaged, at-risk parents and promote coparenting quality. Four classes of parental ACEs were identified: a high ACEs group, child abuse and physical neglect group, violence victimisation group, and a low ACEs group. Children with parents classified in the violence victimisation and low ACEs groups were associated with fewer behavioural problems. With higher levels of coparenting quality those in the low ACEs class reported lower offspring behavioural problems.

Association of maternal and paternal adverse childhood experiences with emotional and behavioral problems among preschool children

Abstract:Although maternal adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are known to be related to the emotional and behavioral problems (EBPs) of offspring, few studies have surveyed the intergenerational effects of paternal ACEs. In addition, no study has yet explored the combination and interaction effects of maternal and paternal ACEs on preschool children's EBPs in China, and the gender differences in these relationships also remain to be explored. A total of 3,575 preschool children from 12 preschools from Hefei city of Anhui province were included in this study. We used a binomial logistic regression to examine the relationship between maternal ACEs, paternal ACEs and children's EBPs. Logistic regression analysis indicated that maternal and paternal ACEs were significantly related to EBPs in children, respectively. The high maternal ACEs + high paternal ACEs group had the greatest association with children's EBPs. Interaction analysis results showed that, compared with the reference group (low maternal ACEs×low paternal ACEs), the other group (high maternal ACEs×high paternal ACEs ) were significantly related to children's EBPs (OR = 1.84, 95%CI: 1.55-2.19). We found that there were no gender differences in the combination and interaction effects (P>0.05). When fathers and mothers were jointly exposed to high levels of ACEs, children had a higher risk of developing EBPs than when they were exposed independently. Future studies should fully explore the intergenerational health effects of parental ACEs so that references for promoting the physical and mental health of preschool children can be developed.
Life Course Violence: Child Maltreatment, IPV, and Elder Abuse Phenotypes in a US Chinese Population.

Abstract:OBJECTIVES To examine the associations between violence experiences including phenotypes (psychological, physical/sexual abuse, financial exploitation, caregiver neglect) of child maltreatment (CM), intimate partner violence (IPV), and elder abuse (EA). DESIGN Cross-sectional data collected during 2011-2013. SETTING US Chinese community in Chicago, Illinois. PARTICIPANTS A total of 3157 community-dwelling older adults (aged >= 60 y). MEASUREMENTS Cases of CM, IPV, and EA. RESULTS Prevalence of violence was 11.4% for CM (physical/sexual = 10.2%; psychological = 2.4%), 6.5% for IPV (psychological = 5.3%; physical/sexual = 2.8%), and 15.2% for EA (caregiver neglect = 11.2%; psychological = 9.8%; financial exploitation = 9.3%; physical/sexual = 1.2%). After adjusting for potential confounding variables, CM psychological was associated with increased risks for IPV psychological (odds ratio [OR] = 7.60; 95% confidence interval [CI] = 4.29-13.45), IPV physical/sexual (OR = 4.06; CI = 1.71-9.63), EA psychological (OR = 3.79; 95% CI = 2.20-6.51), and EA financial exploitation (OR = 2.07; 95% CI = 1.12-3.81). CM physical/sexual was associated with increased risks for IPV physical/sexual (OR = 1.86; 95% CI = 1.02-3.38), EA psychological (OR = 1.70; 95% CI = 1.20-2.42), and EA financial exploitation (OR = 2.38; 95% CI = 1.72-3.30). IPV psychological and physical/sexual were associated with 5 to 8 times increased risks for EA psychological, 6 to 9 times increased risks for EA physical/sexual, and 3 times increased risks for EA financial exploitation. CONCLUSION Healthcare professionals working with older adults should be informed that a history of violence might further predispose a person to different types of EA. Abstract:Journal of Interpersonal Violence, Ahead of Print. Understanding the experiences of intimate partner violence (IPV) is a critical first step in developing effective responses. However, the majority of research has focused on male perpetration against women, with male victimization being relatively marginalized. This study aims to explore the experiences of men with IPV in the context of Chinese society, where adherence to masculinity and the societal pursuit of face and harmony contribute to tolerance of IPV and hinder the understanding of male victim experiences. This study analyzes the IPV experiences shared by 57 men on public internet forums and invited 11 of them to participate in semi-structured interviews through private messages. Finally, thematic analysis was employed to qualitatively analyze the collected textual data. This study revealed seven key themes in the narratives of men. This study has significant implications for future research on IPV in China, as well as for policy formulation and service provision.

Abstract:Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), including child abuse/neglect and household challenges, are a prevalent social issue that impacts individuals' well-being worldwide. Relatively few ACEs studies orient to the presence of psychological wellness, especially in ethnically Chinese populations. Furthermore, less is known about resilience as a mechanism between ACEs and psychological well-being, in addition to the moderating effect of gender. This study examined the relationship between ACEs and psychological well-being among Chinese college students and the potential mediating and moderating effects of resilience and gender, respectively. A total of 1,871 college students studying social science from 12 Chinese colleges completed an anonymous online survey between late September and early October 2020. Multiple-group path analyses were conducted to examine whether the relationships among ACEs, resilience, and psychological well-being differed as a function of gender. Results suggested that gender moderated the relationships studied. For female students, resilience mediated the association between abuse/neglect and psychological well-being, where abuse/neglect was negatively associated with resilience, which in turn had a negative relationship with psychological well-being. For male students, household challenges were negatively related to psychological well-being through reduced resilience. Based on the findings, various ACE-informed initiatives may be essential to prevent and protect individuals from ACEs. We also call for resilience-based interventions to enhance individuals' resilience and thus strengthen their psychological well-being.

Abstract:Violence Against Women, Ahead of Print. Few studies have empirically examined factors influencing attitudes toward acceptance of intimate partner violence (IPV), and no study has yet studied the topic in China. We empirically test the effects of attitudes toward gender roles and exposure to violence during childhood on the acceptance of IPV and the moderating effects of education and income on these relationships. Using survey data collected from 600 Chinese women from southern China, we found that education and income moderate the relationship between belief in gender equality and acceptance of IPV. The effect of exposure to parental physical violence on the acceptance of IPV is moderated by education.

Emotional, Physical, and Sexual Child Abuse in China: Prevalence and Psychological Consequence

Abstract:The present study aimed to examine different degrees of child abuse and related psychological consequences in the mainland of China. A Chinese version of the Norvold Abuse Questionnaire was administered to 981 Chinese college students. The prevalence rates of child emotional abuse were 16.4%, 8.8%, and 6.9% for the mild, moderate, and severe levels of abuse, respectively, and those of physical abuse were 34.3%, 19.3%, and 3.1%, respectively. Furthermore, 4.4% of the participants in the mild sexual abuse group reported having had no genital contact and 1.0% of them reported having experienced emotional humiliation. The prevalence rates of moderate and severe sexual abuse were 2.4% and .8%. More males were found to suffer from moderate or severe levels of emotional abuse than females. Similarly, more males reported physical abuse than females across all degrees of severity. Mild and severe physical abuse had a larger current effect on males than on females, whereas the impact of moderate physical abuse was greater on females. Overall, Chinese college students reported significantly fewer sexual abuses than similar samples in Western countries. Additionally, more females suffered from mild sexual abuse than males. These findings suggest a potential influence of gender and culture.
