Abstract:To evaluate a computer-based Farnsworth-Munsell (FM) 100-hue test and compare it with a manual FM 100-hue test in normal and congenital color-deficient individuals. Fifty color defective subjects and 200 normal subjects with a best-corrected visual acuity ≥6/12 were compared using a standard manual FM 100-hue test and a computer-based FM 100-hue test under standard operating conditions as recommended by the manufacturer after initial trial testing. Parameters evaluated were total error scores (TES), type of defect and testing time. Pearson’s correlation coefficient was used to determine the relationship between the test scores. Cohen’s kappa was used to assess agreement of color defect classification between the two tests. A receiver operating characteristic curve was used to determine the optimal cut-off score for the computer-based FM 100-hue test. The mean time was 16 ± 1.5 (range 6–20) min for the manual FM 100-hue test and 7.4 ± 1.4 (range 5–13) min for the computer-based FM 100-hue test, thus reducing testing time to <50 % (p < 0.05). For grading color discrimination, Pearson’s correlation coefficient for TES between the two tests was 0.91 (p < 0.001). For color defect classification, Cohen’s agreement coefficient was 0.98 (p < 0.01). The computer-based FM 100-hue is an effective and rapid method for detecting, classifying and grading color vision anomalies.

Abstract:PURPOSE: The Farnsworth-Munsell (FM) 100-hue test is well known but is also time consuming, especially its analytical component. To reduce this needless time-waste during precious working hours, a simple modification was devised.DESIGN: Prospective, comparative, observational study.MATERIALS AND METHODS: A transparent clear plastic carrier box replaced the opaque one, allowing ready digital photodocumentation of top and bottom without even opening the box, or handling/inverting the caps -200 reportedly normals and 50 known color vision defectives could be easily tested on this modified-FM and results stored, allowing rapid turnover. The captured scores with patient ID were analyzed, at leisure, outside hospital time, saving 45-60 minutes/patient. After recording, the box was promptly handed over to the next subject for rearrangement. Times taken for test/patient were recorded.RESULTS: Running time was reduced from 60-75 min to ~15 min/patient with no waste of invaluable lab hours. Turnover time is limited to capturing two photographs (~60 sec). The box is relatively cheap and easy to maintain.CONCLUSIONS: Our simplified FM 100-hue test allowed rapid assessment of color visions with easy data storage of both top and bottom.

Limitations and Precautions in the Use of the Farnsworth-Munsell Dichotomous D-15 Test

Abstract:Significance: Clinicians who administer the Farnsworth-Munsell D-15 test need to pay attention to the quality and quantity of lighting and the time that they allow for completion of the test, and all repeat attempts need to be included in reports on compliance with color vision standards. Purpose: The validity of the Farnsworth-Munsell D-15 has been questioned because practice may allow significantly color vision-deficient subjects to pass. In this article, we review the influence of practice and other factors that may affect the performance. These relate to both the design and the administration of the test. Methods: We review the literature and present some calculations on limitations in the colorimetric design of the test, quantity and quality of lighting, time taken, and repeat attempts. Results: In addition to the review of the literature, color differences and luminance differences under selected sources are calculated, and the increases in luminance clues under some sources and for protanopes are illustrated. Conclusions: All these factors affect the outcome of the test and need specification and implementation if the test is to be applied consistently and equitably. We recommend the following: practitioners should never rely on a single color vision test regardless of the color vision standard; lighting should be Tcp '' 6500 K and Ra > 90; illuminance levels should be between 200 and 300 lux if detection of color vision deficiency is a priority or between 300 and 1000 lux if the need is to test at the level where illuminance has minimal influence on performance; illuminance should be reported; time limits should be set between 1 and 2 minutes; repeat testing (beyond the specified test and one retest) should be carried out only with authorization; and initial and repeated results should be reported. A set of test instructions to assist in the consistent application of the test is provided in the Appendix.

Abstract:In this study,the visual performances of 448 matches of color foreground(letter) and color background were studied with the character-discerning and key-pressing response method.The subjective visual and key-pressing response time was examined as an index.The effects of VDT multicolor contrasts on visual performance were explored.It was concluded that the effect of hue on visual performances was remarkable.The performance of the combination of complementary colors was better than the average,and the performance of the combination of the same hue colors was worse than the average.

Abstract:Display technologies are used in various industries. However, few studies on color vision testing using self-luminous displays are reported. In this study, a screen-based color vision test, termed the digital color vision test (DCVT), is developed on a color-calibrated monitor. A control bar is adjusted by the observer to build just noticeable chromatic difference ellipses in CIE u'v' chromaticity diagram, which indicate the capabilities of subjects' color visions. Ten color-normal observers and 13 deutan observers participated in the psychophysical experiments. The observers also performed the other two typical diagnostic tests (D-15 and anomaloscope). Results from the experiment using the adjustment psychophysical method for digital quantification of deutan color vision defects are presented. It is found that the diagnosis accuracy of the DCVT is approximately equivalent to those of D-15 and anomaloscope tests.

Abstract:Color vision assessment is essential in clinical practice, yet different tests exhibit distinct strengths and limitations. Here we apply a psychophysical paradigm, Angular Indication Measurement (AIM) for color detection and discrimination. AIM is designed to address some of the shortcomings of existing tests, such as prolonged testing time, limited accuracy and sensitivity, and the necessity for clinician oversight. AIM presents adaptively generated charts, each a N*M (here 4*4) grid of stimuli, and participants are instructed to indicate either the orientation of the gap in a cone-isolating Landolt C optotype or the orientation of the edge between two colors in an equiluminant color space. The contrasts or color differences of the stimuli are adaptively selected for each chart based on performance of prior AIM charts. In a group of 23 color-normal and 15 people with color vision deficiency (CVD), we validate AIM color against Hardy-Rand-Rittler (HRR), Farnsworth-Munsell 100 hue test (FM100), and anomaloscope color matching diagnosis and use machine learning techniques to classify the type and severity of CVD. The results show that AIM has classification accuracies comparable to that of the anomaloscope, and while HRR and FM100 are less accurate than AIM and an anomaloscope, HRR is very rapid. We conclude that AIM is a computer-based, self-administered, response-adaptive and rapid tool with high test-retest repeatability that has the potential to be suitable for both clinical and research applications.

Abstract:PURPOSE: To evaluate a customized, portable Farnsworth-Munsell 100 (FM 100) hue viewing booth for compliance with colour vision testing standards and to compare it with room illumination in subjects with normal colour vision (trichromats), subjects with acquired colour vision defects (secondary to diabetes mellitus), and subjects with congenital colour vision defects (dichromats).METHODS: Discrete wavelengths of the tube in the customized booth were measured using a spectrometer using the normal incident method and were compared with the spectral distribution of sunlight. Forty-eight subjects were recruited for the study and were divided into 3 groups: Group 1, Normal Trichromats (30 eyes); Group 2, Congenital Colour Vision Defects (16 eyes); and Group 3, Diabetes Mellitus (20 eyes). The FM 100 hue test performance was compared using two illumination conditions, booth illumination and room illumination.RESULTS: Total error scores of the classical method in Group 2 as mean+/-SD for room and booth illumination was 243.05+/-85.96 and 149.85+/-54.50 respectively (p=0.0001). Group 2 demonstrated lesser correlation (r=0.50, 0.55), lesser reliability (Cronbach's alpha, 0.625, 0.662) and greater variability (Bland & Altman value, 10.5) in total error scores for the classical method and the moment of inertia method between the two illumination conditions when compared to the other two groups.CONCLUSIONS: The customized booth demonstrated illumination meeting CIE standards. The total error scores were overestimated by the classical and moment of inertia methods in all groups for room illumination compared with booth illumination, however overestimation was more significant in the diabetes group.

Abstract:Aims/Purpose: A colour vision test was developed to run on web browser without specific hardware. It can estimate observers' colour vision thresholds, response times and eye movements with a webcam. The aim of this work was to compare the chromatic thresholds (CT) obtained for normal colour vision observers when estimated on calibrated and uncalibrated computer screens. Methods: Four squares with random luminance noise were presented on a uniform grey background. One square was randomly selected to present a colour with a particular hue and saturation. Twenty‐six hues were tested on or near the dichromatic confusion lines. CT for each hue were estimated after a staircase procedure, and by computing the colour difference between the observers' CT and the reference white of the screen in use. The observers' task was to point and select the coloured square with the computer mouse. Two conditions were considered: a condition where the uncalibrated screen of the participants' laptop was used (L), and a condition using a screen calibrated in colour and luminance (D). The setup for D condition was equal across observers ensuring the same stimulus size and colour, observers' distance to screen and dark environment. The setup for L condition was uncontrolled but observers were guided towards providing information about pixel size, using a dark environment, disabling screen night light mode, using a laptop screen, and ensuring that screen brightness and zoom were adequate. Results: 48 normal colour vision observers performed this test on D condition, while a subset of 45 observers repeated this test on L condition. CT were averaged across observers for both conditions. It was found that CT are comparable across different screens and correlatable with traditional colour vision tests. It was also found that hues at degrees 157°,162°,167°,179°,185° and 347° had statistical differences ( p < 0.05) when comparing conditions L and D. Conclusions: These results seem to indicate that the assumptions made to run the colour vision test on unknown computer screens with the instructions given, may be sufficient to obtain CT comparable to traditional colour vision tests, even if the test was done in non‐controlled conditions.

Colour Discrimination Scores Combining Colour Fidelity and Gamut Area Characteristics

Abstract:This paper investigated colour discrimination based on current available indexes, and predictors were proposed for global and targeted colour scenarios. Thirty participants conducted the Farnsworth-Munsell 100 hue test under 21 lighting conditions. The experiment results revealed that the distribution of total error score (TES) and adjusted total error score (TESadj) showed arc shapes centred on the optimal point (100, 100) in both R-f-R-g and colour rendering index-gamut area index coordinate systems. On this basis, global colour discrimination scores, CDS1 and CDS2, based on the colour fidelity and colour gamut characteristics, were proposed. The results demonstrated that both CDS1 (r=0.82, p< 0.001) and CDS2 (r=0.81, p< 0.001) provided good linear correlations with TES, and CDS1 (r=0.75, p< 0.001) and CDS2 (r=0.77, p <.0.001) also exhibited a good linear correlation with TESadj. Furthermore, the global colour gamut was divided into four local colour spaces (red-yellow, yellow-green, green-blue and blue-red), and the CDSs in the local gamut (CDSlocal and CDSadj,local) were constructed using the local colour properties, including R-cs,R-local, R-hs,(loca)l, and R-f,R-local. The linear regression results demonstrated that CDSlocal ((r) over bar = 0.79) and CDSadj,local ((r) over bar = 0.78) can be effective colour discrimination predictors for the targeted colour scenarios.

Abstract:Color vision testing is often considered a resource-intensive examination, requiring an anomaloscope, or at least color plates and specialized lighting equipment. Multiple novel, digital color vision testing algorithms have also been described, but were only verified using calibrated displays. In this work, we assessed if color vision testing could be performed with any computer display using two arrangement type color vision tests, the D15 and desaturated D15 panels. Established mathematical models of human color vision deficiencies (CVDs) and publicly available colorimetric data of real world computer screens were used to model how the panel colors would be displayed on computer screens and then perceived and arranged by subjects with varying levels of CVD. A total of 627,431 arrangements were evaluated. We found that all of the modeled displays, including ones with a low color accuracy of deltaE=6, were characterized by specificity above 86%, and the sensitivity of the desaturated D15 panel remained above 85% as well, with negative predictive values above 90% to detect any form of CVD compared to using the unmodifed colors. These findings suggest that any digital screen could be utilized for color vision screening, even without calibration, enabling reliable high-throughput screening utilizing equipment that is already present at virtually all healthcare providers. Since 8% of the population is affected by some form of CVD, simplifeid screening would unlock notable benefits for all stakeholders. Furthermore, the described algorithm could also be used to optimize other digital color vision tests for general use.

Abstract:Although color vision deficiencies are very prevalent, there are no ideal methods for assessing color vision in all environments. We compared a new digital and automated method that quantifies color perception for the three protan, deutan, and tritan axes with two of the most commonly used color tests in daily practice: the Ishihara 38 plates test and the Farnsworth–Munsell 100-Huetest. One hundred patients underwent a triple examination composed of the new DIVE Color Test, the Ishihara test, and the Farnsworth–Munsell 100-Huetest. The DIVE Color Test was performed twice in forty participants to assess its repeatability. In the trichromatic group, the mean age stood at 20.57 ± 9.22 years compared with 25.99 ± 15.86 years in the dyschromatic group. The DIVE and Ishihara tests exhibited excellent agreement in identifying participants with color deficiency (Cohen's kappa = 1.00), while it was 0.81 when comparing DIVE and Farnsworth. The correlation between the global perception values of Farnsworth (TES) and DIVE (GCS) was 0.80. The repeatability of the DIVE Color Test was high according to Bland–Altman analysis with an intraclass correlation coefficient of 0.83. According to Ishihara, the DIVE Color Test proved to be an effective and reproducible tool for red–green color vision deficiency detection, capable of determining the severity of the defect in each of the three axes faster and more accurately than both Ishihara and Farnsworth.

Evaluation of a chromatometer: a new method for blue-yellow or green-red visual comparisons, and anomaly screening techniques

Abstract:Background: Malbrel's chromatometer is a new apparatus which allows color vision to be monitored. The aim of this study was to assess the accuracy of this new examination method. Material/methods: The color vision of a patient was analyzed using a chromatometer for direct heterochromatic visual comparisons. The patient's task was to adjust, using one eye only, the brightness of a yellow (or red) window to the one of a fixed blue (or green) window. Overall, 158 patients, aged 20 to 28, took part in the experiment. First, parametric means were used to study the response distributions and the luminous effects on the responses. Second, using non-parametric means, we considered that a patient had an anomalous color vision according to the chromatometer if the response was higher than the 95th percentile or lower than 5th percentile. Third, anomalous responses were compared with the Ishihara plates and Farnsworth 28-hue responses. Results: The effect of a luminous stimulus on the response was significant (adjusted to the patient effect). Thus, the chromatometer appears to be a good method to analyze color vision. This apparatus was easy to use and constituted a sensitive and specific test with high negative predictive value. Conclusions: The chromatometer can be used as a first-line screening test to detect color vision anomalies during ophthalmology consultations. The chromatometer can be useful in identifying early ocular disease, monitoring disease development, or checking possible iatrogenic effects of a specific treatment.
An Adaptive Fuzzy-Based System to Simulate, Quantify and Compensate Color Blindness

Abstract:About 8% of the male population of the world are affected by a determined type of color vision disturbance, which varies from the partial to complete reduction of the ability to distinguish certain colors. A considerable amount of color blind people are able to live all life long without knowing they have color vision disabilities and abnormalities. Nowadays the evolution of information technology and computer science, specifically image processing techniques and computer graphics, can be fundamental to aid at the development of adaptive color blindness correction tools. This paper presents a software tool based on Fuzzy Logic to evaluate the type and the degree of color blindness a person suffer from. In order to model several degrees of color blindness, herein this work we modified the classical linear transform-based simulation method by the use of fuzzy parameters. We also proposed four new methods to correct color blindness based on a fuzzy approach: Methods A and B, with and without histogram equalization. All the methods are based on combinations of linear transforms and histogram operations. In order to evaluate the results we implemented a web-based survey to get the best results according to optimize to distinguish different elements in an image. Results obtained from 40 volunteers proved that the Method B with histogram equalization got the best results for about 47% of volunteers.

Abstract:We describe a novel method for testing a visual field that employs a computer monitor with displays of varying contrast that permits unprecedented resolution and characterization of the structure of scotomas in three dimensions. Patients are placed in front of a touch-sensitive computer screen at a fixed distance. With one eye covered, they focus on a central fixation marker and trace with their finger the areas on an Amsler grid that are missing from their field of vision. Increasing degrees of contrast of the Amsler grid are simulated by repeating the test at different gray-scale levels. The results are recorded and then displayed as topographical contour rings by the computer test program. The results can also be rendered as an immediate 3-D depiction of the central hill-of-vision. Several clinical pilot studies have been conducted at the Doheny Eye Institute and more than 200 patients have been examined with this system so far. Conditions such as optic neuritis, anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (AION), age-related macular degeneration (AMD), glaucoma, and ocular hypertension have been successfully assessed by this test. Each condition provides unique patterns that are most evident in 3-D. The 3-D computer-automated threshold Amsler grid test is an innovative and noninvasive visual field test. It provides several advantages over state-of-the-art standard automated perimetry, including: (1) additional information through 3-D depiction of scotomas, such as location, extent, slope, depth, and shape; (2) high angular resolution (1 deg compared with typically 6 deg); (3) a simple test setup (merely a touch-sensitive computer monitor and the test software); (4) excellent patient compliance (spending 4 to 5 min per eye). In light of its promising initial tests, the 3-D visual field test appears to have the potential for the early detection and monitoring of various diseases over time.
Novel Method for the Quantitative Measurement of Color Vision Deficiencies

Abstract:The method is based on chromatic visual evoked potential (VEP) measurement. The equiluminance of color stimulus in normal subjects is characterized by L-cone and M-cone activation in retina. For the deuteranopes and protanopes, only the activations of one relevant remaining cone type should be considered. The equiluminance turning curve was established for the recorded VEPs of the luminance changes of the red and green color stimulus, and the position of the equiluminance was used to define the kind and degree of color vision deficiencies. In the test of 47 volunteers, we got the VEP traces and the equiluminance turning curves, which was in accordance with the judgment by the pseudoisochromatic plate used in clinic. The method fulfills the impersonal and quantitative requirements in color vision deficiencies test.

Abstract:Color vision deficiencies (CVDs) indicate potential genetic variations and can be important biomarkers of acquired impairment in many neuro-ophthalmic diseases. However, CVDs are typically measured with insensitive or inefficient tools that are designed to classify dichromacy subtypes rather than track changes in sensitivity. We introduce FInD (Foraging Interactive D-prime), a novel computer-based, generalizable, rapid, self-administered vision assessment tool and applied it to color vision testing. This signal detection theory-based adaptive paradigm computes test stimulus intensity from d-prime analysis. Stimuli were chromatic Gaussian blobs in dynamic luminance noise, and participants clicked on cells that contain chromatic blobs (detection) or blob pairs of differing colors (discrimination). Sensitivity and repeatability of FInD Color tasks were compared against HRR, FM100 hue tests in 19 color-normal and 18 color-atypical, age-matched observers. Rayleigh color match was completed as well. Detection and Discrimination thresholds were higher for atypical observers than for typical observers, with selective threshold elevations corresponding to unique CVD types. Classifications of CVD type and severity via unsupervised machine learning confirmed functional subtypes. FInD tasks reliably detect CVD and may serve as valuable tools in basic and clinical color vision science.
Psychophysical Evaluation of Congenital Colour Vision Deficiency: Discrimination between Protans and Deutans Using Mollon-Reffin’s Ellipses and the Farnsworth-Munsell 100-Hue Test

Abstract:We have used the Farnsworth-Munsell 100-hue (FM 100) test and Mollon-Reffin (MR) test to evaluate the colour vision of 93 subjects, 30.4 ± 9.7 years old, who had red-green congenital colour vision deficiencies. All subjects lived in Belém (State of Pará, Brazil) and were selected by the State of Pará Traffic Department. Selection criteria comprised the absence of visual dysfunctions other than Daltonism and no history of systemic diseases that could impair the visual system performance. Results from colour vision deficient were compared with those from 127 normal trichromats, 29.3 ± 10.3 years old. For the MR test, measurements were taken around five points of the CIE 1976 colour space, along 20 directions irradiating from each point, in order to determine with high-resolution the corresponding colour discrimination ellipses (MacAdam ellipses). Three parameters were used to compare results obtained from different subjects: diameter of circle with same ellipse area, ratio between ellipse's long and short axes, and ellipse long axis angle. For the FM 100 test, the parameters were: logarithm of the total number of mistakes and positions of mistakes in the FM diagram. Data were also simultaneously analysed in two or three dimensions as well as by using multidimensional cluster analysis. For the MR test, Mollon-Reffin Ellipse #3 (u' = 0.225, v' = 0.415) discriminated more efficiently than the other four ellipses between protans and deutans once it provided larger angular difference in the colour space between protan and deutan confusion lines. The MR test was more sensitive than the FM 100 test. It separated individuals by dysfunctional groups with greater precision, provided a more sophisticated quantitative analysis, and its use is appropriate for a more refined evaluation of different phenotypes of red-green colour vision deficiencies.
