Abstract:Magnesium alloys are a promising structural material to be used as a substitute for metals traditionally used in the automotive and aircraft sector. However, magnesium alloys have poor mechanical properties and corrosion resistance. These handicaps can be overcome through the application of coatings with improved properties. Laser cladding is a potential coating fabrication process. Furthermore, the low vaporization temperature of magnesium and the coating-substrate dilution problems increase the difficulty to coat magnesium substrates. The aim of this research is to analyze the state of art in magnesium laser cladding and investigate the effect of the most important fabrication parameters on the interaction of the different coating-substrate systems used on the mechanical properties and corrosion resistance. In addition, this work provides a guidance on laser cladding best practices for these alloys. Knowledge of how the different coating manufacturing parameters affect the final surface properties of magnesium alloys is essential for the implantation of these materials in applications for which they are currently limited.

Abstract:This paper discusses about the recent advancements in laser cladding and alloying processes used for surface property enhancement of magnesium and its alloys. Laser cladding and alloying is advanced manufacturing method used for surface modification of metallic materials in the modern industries. The cladding process is surface modification technique, which is used for deposition of thick layer of advanced materials on surface of conventional materials to improve the surface properties like, wear resistance, hardness, oxidation resistance, corrosion resistance, biocompatibility and heat resistance. The advanced materials generally used for cladding operations are transition metals, alloys, ceramics, composites, nanomaterials, rare earth oxide and some solid lubricant additives. The conventional substrate materials are steel, cast iron, titanium alloy, aluminium alloy, magnesium alloys and copper alloys. Laser cladding is most widely used coating technique because of its attractive properties such as low dilution rate, good metallurgical bonding between coating and substrate, less distortion, narrow heat affected zone, high solidification and cooling rate. In this article magnesium alloy is considered as substrate material and the various coating materials used for its surface modification are explained. Also, the effects of various laser process parameters on phase composition, microstructure, elemental composition, mechanical properties, tribological properties and corrosion resistance are discussed. The characterization techniques such as XRD, SEM, EDS, Vickers microhardness test, wear and friction test, corrosion test used for coating analysis are described. Furthermore, the problem arises in laser cladding and alloying on magnesium alloy and their possible remedies are discussed.

Abstract:Magnesium (Mg) metals have been widely used in various fields as one of the most promising lightweight structural materials. However, the low corrosion resistance and poor mechanical properties restrict its applications. Surface treatments are common approach to enhance the mechanical strength and corrosion resistance of Mg metals. Among them, laser surface treatment generates novel tissues and structures in situ on the sample surface, thereby improving properties of mechanical strength and corrosion resistance. We briefly describe the changes in surface organization that arise after laser treatment of Mg surfaces, as well as the creation of structures such as streaks, particles, holes, craters, etc., and provide an overview of the reasons for the alterations. The effect of laser processing on wettability, hardness, friction wear, degradation, biocompatibility and mechanical properties were reviewed. At last, the limitations and development trend of laser treatment on Mg metals research were further pointed out.

Abstract:As one of the lightest structural metals, the application breadth of aluminum alloys is, to some extent, constrained by their relatively low wear resistance and hardness. However, laser cladding technology, with its low dilution rate, compact structure, excellent coating-to-substrate bonding, and environmental advantages, can significantly enhance the surface hardness and wear resistance of aluminum alloys, thus proving to be an effective surface modification strategy. This review focuses on the topic of surface laser cladding materials for aluminum alloys, detailing the application background, process, microstructure, hardness, wear resistance, and corrosion resistance of six types of coatings, namely Al-based, Ni-based, Fe-based, ceramic-based, amorphous glass, and high-entropy alloys. Each coating type's characteristics are summarized, providing theoretical references for designing and selecting laser cladding coatings for aluminum alloy surfaces. Furthermore, a prediction and outlook for the future development of laser cladding on the surface of aluminum alloys is also presented.

Microstructure and properties of laser cladding Al-Si+Y2O3 coating on magnesium alloy

Abstract:In order to improve the wear resistance and corrosion resistance of the magnesium alloy, Al-Si+Y2O3 coating was prepared on the magnesium alloy by laser cladding. Research results show that the coating and the substrate show a good metallurgical bond without cracks and pores. The coating is composed of α-Mg, Mg2Si, Mg2Al3 and Mg17Al12 intermetallic compound. Scanning electron microscopy results show that a large number of dendrites in the coating enhance the surface properties of magnesium alloy. The hardness of the coating is 239.9HV, which is 1.7 times as that of the substrate (89.7HV). The wear volume of the coating is 1.245mm3, and the wear volume of the substrate is 2.122mm3, and the wear volume of the coating is only 59% as that of the substrate. The self-corrosion potential of the coating(-0.616V) is higher than that of the substrate (-1.394V), while the self-corrosion current density of the coating is only 1/400 as that of the substrate, and the corrosion resistance of the coating is significantly improved.

Abstract:Al-based amorphous-nanocrystalline composite coatings were prepared by laser cladding Al95-xCuxZn5 (x = 5, 10, 15, at.%) powders on AZ80 magnesium alloy under a low-temperature water cooling condition. The microstructural observations indicate that all the cladding layers exhibit good metallurgical bonding to the substrates while the morphology of the cladding layer varies with the Cu content. The microstructure and properties of the Al85Cu10Zn5 (x = 10, at.%) coating and the substrate were carefully characterized and analyzed. The XRD analysis and TEM observations show that the Al85Cu10Zn5 cladding layer is constituted of amorphous phase, nanocrystallines and ternary intermetallics Mg32Al47Cu7, τ-Mg32(Al,Zn)49, AlMg4Zn11 and S-Al2CuMg. The surface performances of the AZ80 substrate are greatly improved by the Al85Cu10Zn5 cladding layer. The average hardness of the Al85Cu10Zn5 layer is 364 HV0.05, which is about 4 times higher than that of the substrate (∼86 HV0.05), and the relative wear resistance of the Al85Cu10Zn5 cladding layer is 5.5 times better than that of the substrate. Meanwhile, the corrosion potential (Ecorr) is increased by 276.2 mV and the corrosion current density (Icorr) is decreased by two orders of magnitude. In addition, the reasons accounting for the improvements of the mechanical properties and corrosion resistance are elucidated accordingly.

Abstract:The ever increasing and often conflicting demands made on engineering materials for suitable physical, chemical, and mechanical properties, have led engineers to take an increased interest in surface coating techniques for material protection. Laser cladding has shown that high quality, distortion free, clad, or alloyed layers can be deposited successfully on base materials. The blown powder laser cladding technique has been established and is used to produce analogs of bulk high alloy materials as hardfacing wear resistant coatings on plane carbon steel substrates. This article shows that a small selection of cladding materials is used in a wide range of cladding applications. An overview is given on how the cladding process is used to generate alloys quickly from powder mixtures of metals and ceramics. Consideration is then given to the variable composition laser cladding technique.

Abstract:Laser cladding is a process whereby a new layer of material is deposited on a substrate by laser fusion of blown powders or pre-placed powder coatings. Multiple layers can be deposited to formshapes with complex geometry. This manufacturing process has been used for material surface property modification and for the repair and manufacture of three-dimensional components. Laser cladding has attracted extensive research over the past 30 years. Over 2000 research papers have been published in journals and international conferences. Research in laser cladding covers many scientific issues, including processing techniques, physical and chemical properties of deposited materials and clad-substrate interfaces, microstructure and phases, rapid solidification phenomena, modelling and simulation, and systems engineering and applications. This article, focusing on the rapid heating/cooling processes and material response, summarizes the state of the art on two fundamental scientific aspects: rapid solidification and the material characteristics. The article includes a review of the microstructural refinement, extended solid solution, metastable phases, amorphous structure, and directional solidification. In addition, the article discusses the progress and state of the art in laser cladding of commercial alloy powders, carbides and intermetallics, in-situ synthesized particulate reinforced metal matrix composite coatings, compositional gradient materials, and alloy development. Laser cladding is capable of producing materials with designed macro/microstructures and properties.

Abstract:<p>Engineering alloys are widely applied as important functional structural materials in aerospace, electronics, metallurgy, and other high-end engineering industries due to their superior properties. However, their further application remains notably restricted by numerous inherent limitations, including low hardness, terrible wear and high-temperature oxidation resistance. In response to this problem, the development of laser cladding (LC) technology has provided new approaches for surface modification of engineering alloys. In this review paper, the recent progress made in the preparation of engineering alloys by LC technology is thoroughly investigated. The elementary knowledge in this field is provided to establish the internal relationships among the laser processing parameters, microstructure, and significant mechanical properties. The LC processing methods and material systems are reviewed, and the critical functional coatings related to this field are also summarised and explored in detail. Furthermore, the current challenges and future efforts are presented, identifying the existing knowledge and technology gaps while also attempting to determine future research directions.</p>

Abstract:The low hardness and poor wear and corrosion resistance of Mg alloys restrict their further applications. Laser cladding technology has been employed to prepare coatings on metals and alloys, but owing to the low melting point of Mg alloy, it is difficult to clad high-performance coatings that usually have high melting points directly. To achieve superior corrosion and wear resistance, a Ni–WC/Al–Ni functionally graded coating was designed and prepared on AZ91D Mg alloy. The microstructure, hardness, corrosion resistance, and tribological behaviors of the coating were studied. The results showed that good metallurgical bonding was obtained between the coating layers and substrate. The Ni–WC top-layer had excellent mechanical performance, and corrosion and wear resistance. The wear resistance of the top-layer was 5–8 times that of the substrate and contributed to the simultaneous enhancement of hardness and corrosion resistance. The results suggest that the use of a functionally graded prepared coating is a good strategy to form a high-performance coating on Mg alloy.

Microstructure Analysis Of Rare Earth-Magnesium Alloy Repaired Using High Power Surface Laser Cladding

Abstract:The similar composition to matrix magnesium alloy coating was prepared on the surface of magnesium alloy via high power laser cladding. Micro-morphology of repairing coating was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The energy-dispersive spectrometer (EDS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) confirmed the phase of coating. The microhardness of the magnesium alloy coatings were analyzed by microhardness tester. It was found that coatings showed good adhesion to magnesium alloy substrate. The average grain diameters of laser repaired coatings were significantly smaller than that of casting base metal, and the microstructure of laser repaired coatings consisted of the matrix alpha-Mg and the lamellar beta-Mg17Al12 in the grain boundaries. The coating has the average micro-hardness about 180 HV, which is 2-3 times higher than that of the rare magnesium matrix.

Abstract:Laser cladding of aluminium powders was performed on pure magnesium substrates using the blown powder method. The microstructure across the laser-clad track was studied. Starting from the bottom of the laser-clad to the top surface of the track, a series of microstructures was observed: a planar growth interface of the substrate, a narrow band of (β+γ) eutectic, a narrow band of β cellular structure, and finally a relatively thick layer of α-Al and (α+β) eutectic structure. The evolution of the various phases and microstructures is discussed in terms of the distribution of solute in conjunction with the Al-Mg phase diagram, temperature gradient and solidification rate, constitutional supercooling theory, and the condition for columnar-to-equiaxed crystal transition.

Abstract:Magnesium (Mg) alloys have the potential for widespread application in aerospace components, communications, biomaterials and electronic industry due to their low density, high thermal conductivity and outstanding mechanical properties (strength and toughness). However, the poor anti-corrosion property of Mg alloys strictly hinders their applications in practice. Laser surface remelting (LSR) is an effective way to improve the corrosion-resistant of Mg alloys, but it is easy to form micropores in the process of laser processing. Therefore, in this work, we combined LSR and layered double hydroxides (LDHs) film to further improve the corrosion resistance of Mg alloys. The results show that the composite films greatly improve the anti-corrosion of Mg alloys, which provide a guidance for the designing of corrosion-resistant coating on Mg alloys.

Abstract:Although Al produces a solid metallurgical bonding with Mg alloy substrates, micropores or crevices in the Al coating can reduce the resistance of Mg alloy to corrosion. In this study, a composite coating with a defect‐free microstructure was prepared on the AZ31 Mg alloy substrate by introducing Al2O3 into the Al matrix via the method of laser cladding. On the one hand, Al2O3 with thermal insulation had a low thermal expansion coefficient and was not very prone to voids during laser melting. On the other hand, Al2O3 particles with a small size acted as the filler in the micropores or crevices. The Al/Al2O3 coating exhibited a smaller current density (2.1 × 10−6 A/cm2) in comparison with those of bare substrate and Al coating (158.4 × 10−6 and 3.1 × 10−6 A/cm2, respectively), which was mainly ascribed to the pore‐free microstructure and high resistance to corrosion of Al2O3 phase. A favorable microhardness value of 95.3 HV was achieved for Al/Al2O3 coating, approximately 1.8 times higher than that of Al coating (52.8 V), which was mainly ascribed to the dispersion hardening of Al2O3 phase. Meanwhile, the Al/Al2O3 coating significantly reduced wear volume from 2.8 mm3/m of Al coating to 0.4 mm3/m, showing great potential for weight reduction applications.

Abstract:This present work focuses on improving the physical properties of the AZ61 magnesium Alloy reinforced with nano TiO2 and Al2O3 through CO2 Laser cladding technique. AZ61 is chosen as substrate and nano TiO2 and Al2O3 were used as reinforcements with different volume fractions (5, 10 and 15%) at a constant speed of Laser movement. The physical properties such as wear behaviour, hardness, corrosion were evaluated on the surface modified AZ61 alloy and concluded that nano TiO2 reinforced surface modified AZ61 alloy performs better than nano Al2O3 reinforced alloy, finding it useful in aerospace and marine applications with high durability.

Abstract:High-entropy alloys have been found to have novel microstructures and unique properties. The main method of manufacturing is vacuum arc remelting. As in situ cladding laser cladding has capability of achieving a controllable dilution ratio, fabricating high-entropy alloy by laser cladding is of great significance and potential for extensive use. In this study, a novel AlxFeCoNiCuCr high-entropy alloy system was manufactured as the thin layer of the substrate by laser cladding; also high temperature hardness, abrasion performance, corrosion nature of the AlxFeCoNiCuCr high-entropy alloy were tested under the different ratio of aluminum. This study shows higher aluminum clad exhibit higher hardness, better abrasion resistance and corrosion resistance.

Abstract:<p>In industries such as aerospace, petrochemistry and automobile, many parts of different machines are under environment which shows high temperature and high pressure, and have their proneness to wear and corrosion. Therefore, the wear resistibility and stability under high temperature need to be further improved. Nowadays, Laser cladding (LC) is widely used in machine parts repairing and functional coating due to its advantages such as lower dilution rate, small heat-affected zone and good metallurgical bonding between coating and substrate. In this paper, LC is introduced in detail from aspects of process simulation, monitoring and parameter optimization. At the same time, the paper gives a comprehensive review over LC material system as high entropy alloys (HEAs), amorphous alloy and single crystal alloy have been gradually showing their advantages over traditional metal materials in LC. In addition, the applications of LC in functional coatings and in maintenance of machine parts are also outlined. Also, the existing problems and the development trend of LC is discussed then.</p>

Abstract:Due to their excellent barrier and shielding effects, superhydrophobic magnesium alloy surfaces are increasingly interested in corrosion protection. This paper proposes a method for producing a stable superhydrophobic surface by laser scanning ablation of AZ31B magnesium alloy on its surface. The prepared layered micro-nanoemulsion convex structure with a lotus-like surface exhibited excellent superhydrophobicity after modification by stearic acid, and the static water droplet contact angle reached 163°. After 90 days in outdoor air, droplet pressure-based experiments show that the superhydrophobic surface possesses a long-term stable Cassie state. In addition, The superhydrophobic surface showed excellent corrosion resistance against magnesium alloy in a Neutral 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution. The results of the dynamic potential polarization tests showed that the existence of a gas layer cavity on the lotus-like surface structure caused the corrosion current density of superhydrophobic AZ31B (3.86±1 uA/cm2) to decrease by 2 orders of magnitude compared with that of the extruded AZ31B (103±1 uA/cm2). We believe the proposed method is simple, efficient, and non-polluting, especially for medical magnesium alloys in the field of in vivo implant materials to slow down corrosion and promote clinical applications.
