Abstract:Modeling abnormal temporal dynamics of functional interactions in psychiatric disorders has been of great interest in the neuroimaging field, and thus a variety of methods have been proposed so far. However, the temporal dynamics and disease-related abnormalities of functional interactions within specific data-driven discovered subnetworks have been rarely explored yet. In this work, we propose a novel computational framework composed of an effective Bayesian connectivity change point model for modeling functional brain interactions and their dynamics simultaneously and an effective variant of nonnegative matrix factorization for assessing the functional interaction abnormalities within subnetworks. This framework has been applied on the resting state fmagnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) datasets of 23 children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and 45 normal control (NC) children, and has revealed two atomic functional interaction patterns (AFIPs) discovered for ADHD and another two AFIPs derived for NC. Together, these four AFIPs could be grouped into two pairs, one common pair representing the common AFIPs in ADHD and NC, and the other abnormal pair representing the abnormal AFIPs in ADHD. Interestingly, by comparing the abnormal AFIP pair, two data-driven abnormal functional subnetworks are derived. Strikingly, by evaluating the approximation based on the four AFIPs, all of the ADHD children were successfully differentiated from NCs without any false positive.
Cross-Modal Attention for Multimodal Information Fusion: A Novel Approach to Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder Detection

Abstract:This paper presents a novel method for differentiating Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder subjects from control participants by multimodal data fusion, including video observations and questionnaire responses. By exploiting the well known Video Vision Transformer model, we analyse the video modality to identify the complex spatial-temporal information of ADHD symptoms. Simultaneously, a Multi-Layer Perceptron model is applied to evaluate structured questionnaire data by capturing key cognitive and emotional indicators of the ADHD symptoms. To fuse the two modalities, a cross-modal attention mechanism assigns adaptive weights to each feature based on its classification relevance. The targeted weighting significantly refines the proposed model’s decision-making capability by concentrating on the most critical elements of the aggregated information. For training and testing, our novel Multimodal ADHD dataset recorded under the Intelligent Sensing ADHD Trial in collaboration with Cumbria, Northumberland, Tyne and Wear NHS Foundation Trust UK is evaluated. The proposed model, ADViQ-AL achieves a 98.18% classification accuracy, 97.83% sensitivity, and 98.53% specificity in classifying ADHD and control groups.

Abstract:As a common neurological disorder in early childhood and adolescence, an efficient and accurate diagnosis of Attention-Defect/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) has always been one of the important goals in the field of psychiatry. However, most of the current diagnostic methods are based on a single table or fMRI images, which may result in the loss of much complementary information useful for diagnosis. Therefore, this paper presents a strategy for multimodal data fusion and an ensemble learning model (Trans3D-ensemble) to classify the ADHDs and typicals. The base classifiers of Trans3D-ensemble include two parts, Trans3D (Transformer for 3D images) to extract spatio-temporal features from fMRI images and random forest to extract clinical features from phenotypic data. Specifically, Trans3D utilizes 3D-CNN to capture volumetric spatial information and convert the 3D images into patch embeddings. Meanwhile, temporal pooling operation fuses the images tokens output by Transformer encoders across time and obtains the representative features of fMRI samples. Existing methods basically only build the above independent models, and few consider the effective combination of the those for diagnosis and treatment. Looking into this issue, we use stacking, one of ensemble learning methods, on multimodal data by merging the outputs from the two base classifiers. The proposed method reaches excellent results compared to most methods based on single modality and gets the accuracy of 74.5% on ADHD-200 data set, demonstrating the potential of the combination of phenotypic data and fMRI for ADHD diagnosis. Our strategy of multimodal data fusion provides a novel comprehensive diagnosis mode and the above results show that the proposed Trans3D-ensemble can effectively improve the auxiliary diagnosis of ADHD.

Abstract:Utilizing functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to model functional brain networks (FBNs) is increasingly prominent in attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) research, revealing neural impact and mechanisms through the exploration of activated brain regions. However, current FBNs-based methods face two major challenges. The primary challenge stems from the limitations of existing modeling methods in accurately capturing both regional correlations and long-distance dependencies (LDDs) within the dynamic brain, thereby affecting the diagnostic accuracy of FBNs as biomarkers. Additionally, limited sample size and class imbalance also pose a challenge to the learning performance of the model. To address the issues, we propose an automated diagnostic framework, which integrates modeling, multimodal fusion, and classification into a unified process. It aims to extract representative FBNs and efficiently incorporate domain knowledge to guide ADHD classification. Our work mainly includes three-fold: 1) A multi-head attention-based region-enhancement module (MAREM) is designed to simultaneously capture regional correlations and LDDs across the entire sequence of brain activity, which facilitates the construction of representative FBNs. 2) The multimodal supplementary learning module (MSLM) is proposed to integrate domain knowledge from phenotype data with FBNs from neuroimaging data, achieving information complementarity and alleviating the problems of insufficient medical data and unbalanced sample categories. 3) An ADHD automatic diagnosis framework guided by FBNs and domain knowledge (ADF-FAD) is proposed to help doctors make more accurate decisions, which is applied to the ADHD-200 dataset to confirm its effectiveness. The results indicate that the FBNs extracted by MAREM perform well in modeling and classification. After with MSLM, the model achieves accuracy of 92.4%, 74.4%, and 80% at NYU, PU, and KKI, respectively, demonstrating its ability to effectively capture crucial information related to ADHD diagnosis. Efficient Deep Learning Approach for Diagnosis of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder in Children Based on EEG Signals

Abstract:Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a behavioral disorder in children that can persist into adulthood if not treated. Early diagnosis of this condition is crucial for effective treatment. The database includes 61 children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder and 60 healthy children as a control group. To diagnose children with ADHD, features were first extracted from EEG signals. Next, a convolutional neural network model was trained, and a new residual network was introduced. The two proposed models were evaluated using tenfold cross-validation on the test data. The average accuracy and F1 score were 92.52% and 93.6%, respectively, for the convolutional model and 96.8% and 97.1% for the ResNet model on the epoch data, respectively. On the other hand, accuracy for subject-based prediction was 96.5% for the convolution model and 98.6% for the modified ResNet model. Accuracy, precision, recall, and F1 score for the proposed ResNet model are better than the convolution model proposed in previous studies and better than the proposed model in the literature. This work presents a paradigm shift in the cognitive-inspired domain by introducing a novel ResNet model for ADHD diagnosis. The model's exceptional accuracy, exceeding conventional methods, showcases its potential as a biologically inspired tool. This opens avenues for exploring the neurological underpinnings of ADHD because the model can be used for the manifold learning of EEG signals. Analyzing the proposed network can lead to a deeper understanding of EEG, bridging the gap between artificial intelligence and cognitive neuroscience. The paper's innovative approach has far-reaching implications, offering a concrete application of cognitive principles to improve mental health diagnostics in children. It is important to note that the data were augmented and the classification model is based on a single experiment containing a very small number of children but the results, and accuracy of classification, are based on classifying augmented data samples that compose the EEG signals of this small number of individuals. It is prudent to undertake a comprehensive investigation into the efficacy of these models across a broad cohort of subjects.

Abstract:Background: Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a multifaceted neurodevelopmental psychiatric condition that typically emerges during childhood but often persists into adulthood, significantly impacting individuals' functioning, relationships, productivity, and overall quality of life. However, the current diagnostic process exhibits limitations that can significantly affect its overall effectiveness. Notably, its face-to-face and time-consuming nature, coupled with the reliance on subjective recall of historical information and clinician subjectivity, stand out as key challenges. To address these limitations, objective measures such as neuropsychological evaluations, imaging techniques and physiological monitoring of the Autonomic Nervous System functioning, have been explored. Methods: The main aim of this study was to investigate whether physiological data (i.e., Electrodermal Activity, Heart Rate Variability, and Skin Temperature) can serve as meaningful indicators of ADHD, evaluating its utility in distinguishing adult ADHD patients. This observational, case-control study included a total of 76 adult participants (32 ADHD patients and 44 healthy controls) who underwent a series of Stroop tests, while their physiological data was passively collected using a multi-sensor wearable device. Univariate feature analysis was employed to identify the tests that triggered significant signal responses, while the Informative k-Nearest Neighbors (KNN) algorithm was used to filter out less informative data points. Finally, a machine-learning decision pipeline incorporating various classification algorithms, including Logistic Regression, KNN, Random Forests, and Support Vector Machines (SVM), was utilized for ADHD patient detection. Results: Results indicate that the SVM-based model yielded the optimal performance, achieving 81.6% accuracy, maintaining a balance between the experimental and control groups, with sensitivity and specificity of 81.4% and 81.9%, respectively. Additionally, integration of data from all physiological signals yielded the best results, suggesting that each modality captures unique aspects of ADHD. Conclusions: This study underscores the potential of physiological signals as valuable diagnostic indicators of adult ADHD. For the first time, to the best of our knowledge, our findings demonstrate that multimodal physiological data collected via wearable devices can complement traditional diagnostic approaches. Further research is warranted to explore the clinical applications and long-term implications of utilizing physiological markers in ADHD diagnosis and management.

Abstract:Clinical EEG and Neuroscience, Ahead of Print. Common misbehavior among children that prevents them from paying attention to tasks and interacting with their surroundings appropriately is attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Studies of children's behavior presently face a significant problem in the early and timely diagnosis of this disease. To diagnose this disease, doctors often use the patient's description and questionnaires, psychological tests, and the patient's behavior in which reliability is questionable. Convolutional neural network (CNN) is one deep learning technique that has been used for the diagnosis of ADHD. CNN, however, does not account for how signals change over time, which leads to low classification performances and ambiguous findings. In this study, the authors designed a hybrid deep learning model that combines long-short-term memory (LSTM) and CNN to simultaneously extract and learn the spatial features and long-term dependencies of the electroencephalography (EEG) data. The effectiveness of the proposed hybrid deep learning model was assessed using 2 publicly available EEG datasets. The suggested model achieves a classification accuracy of 98.86% on the ADHD dataset and 98.28% on the FOCUS dataset, respectively. The experimental findings show that the proposed hybrid CNN-LSTM model outperforms the state-of-the-art methods to diagnose ADHD using EEG. Hence, the proposed hybrid CNN-LSTM model could therefore be utilized to help with the clinical diagnosis of ADHD patients.

Abstract:The authors treated nine women with autonomous adenomas of the thyroid gland by repeated ethanol injections under ultrasonographic control. In all patients clinical and laboratory characteristics of hyperthyroidism were present. After treatment is seven patients euthyroidism was induced, in two patients subclinical hypothyroidism which persisted also during the 6-month follow-up period. In all patients ultrasonographic changes in the nodes were recorded: a reduced echogenity the development of "halo"--hypoechogenic outlines--a change of the shape and on average a 37% reduction of the volume. Treatment was feasible also under out-patient conditions: it was well tolerated by the patients, undesirable effects were not serious and only transient and receded spontaneously.

Abstract:Because the importance of 2,3-diphosphoglycerate in the regulation of the oxygen affinity of hemoglobin is recognized, there is growing need for a suitable method for determining this metabolite. Here we compare the colorimetric method of de Leeuw, two enzymatic rate-dependent methods (of Nygaard and Rorth and of Loos and Prins), and two enzymatic end-point methods (of Keitt and of Ericson and de Verdier). A good linearity was observed for all methods, up to 5.0 mmol of 2,3-diphosphoglycerate per liter of blood, except for the method of Ericson and de Verdier, for which an inexplicable upward drift in the calibration curve was found. Within-run precision in the duplicates and long-term precision in the methods of Loos and Prins and of de Leeuw were excellent. Mean analytical recoveries for all the methods ranged from 97 to 100%. In a paired comparison study of the methods, with the method of Loos and Prins as a reference, we did not find statistically significant differences. Coefficients of correlation were better than 0.990 ( P < 0.0005).

Abstract:The traditional medical diagnosis methods of ADHD mainly rely on scale evaluation and interview observation. The diagnosis conclusion is subjective and extremely dependent on the doctor's experience level. There is an urgent need to improve diagnosis efficiency and improve the diagnosis standard through other technical means in the clinical process. We have designed and developed the ADHD intelligent auxiliary diagnosis system with software and hardware cooperation. The system performs a set of functional test tasks, uses a camera module to capture multimodal information such as facial expressions, eye movements, limb movements, language expressions and reaction abilities of children during task completion, and uses computer vision technology to automatically extract measurable characteristics. Finally, deep learning technology is used to detect children's specific behaviors in the video, which is complementary to the existing doctor's diagnosis basis. This system was deployed in the Department of Psychology of Children's Hospital of Zhejiang University in July 2019 and has been used in actual clinical diagnosis to date. It has completed the testing and evaluation of hundreds of ADHD children.
Diagnostic model optimization method for ADHD based on brain network analysis of resting-state fMRI images and transfer learning neural network

Abstract:Introduction: Attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common inherited disease of the nervous system whose cause(s) and pathogenesis remain unclear. Currently, the diagnosis of ADHD is mainly based on clinical experience and guidelines that have laid out some diagnostic standards. Our study aimed to apply a learning-based classification method to assist the ADHD diagnosis based on high-dimensional resting-state fMRI. Methods: Our study selected the ADHD-200 Peking dataset of resting-state fMRI, which has an ADHD patient ( n = 142) group and a typically developing control (TDC) healthy control ( n = 102) group. We first used Pearson and partial correlation coefficients to perform functional connectivity (FC) analysis between ROIs. Then, the Pearson and partial correlation coefficient matrices were concatenated into a dual-channel feature to build a dual data channel as input to the transfer learning neural network (TLNN) architecture. Finally, we transferred the pretrained model from the auxiliary domain to our target domain and fine-tuned it. Results: Based on the Pearson correlation coefficient, FC between ROIs was detected in 22 brain regions, including the fusiform gyrus, superior frontal gyrus, posterior superior temporal sulcus, inferior parietal lobule, anterior cingulate cortex, and parahippocampal gyrus. Based on the partial correlation coefficient, we found FC in the salient network, default network, sensory-motor network, dorsal attention network, and cerebellum network. With the TLNN architecture, we solved the problem of insufficient training data and improved the sensitivity of the classification method. When the VGG model (fine-tuned transfer strategy, 1,024 fully connected layers) was applied, the accuracy of TLNN classification ultimately reached 82%. Conclusion: Our study suggests that completing the training of the target domain by transferring the prior knowledge of the auxiliary domain is effective in solving the classification problem of small sample datasets. Based on prior knowledge of FC analysis, TLNN classification may assist ADHD diagnosis in a new way.

Abstract:Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a widespread neurobehavioral disorder affecting children and adolescents, requiring early detection for effective treatment. EEG connectivity measures can reveal the interdependencies between EEG recordings, highlighting brain network patterns and functional behavior that improve diagnostic accuracy. This study introduces a novel ADHD diagnostic method by combining linear and nonlinear brain connectivity maps with an attention-based convolutional neural network (Att-CNN). Pearson Correlation Coefficient (PCC) and Phase-Locking Value (PLV) are used to create fused connectivity maps (FCMs) from various EEG frequency subbands, which are then inputted into the Att-CNN. The attention module is strategically placed after the latest convolutional layer in the CNN. The performance of different optimizers (Adam and SGD) and learning rates are assessed. The suggested model obtained 98.88%, 98.41%, 98.19%, and 98.30% for accuracy, precision, recall, and F1 Score, respectively, using the SGD optimizer in the FCM of the theta band with a learning rate of 1e-1. With the use of FCM, Att-CNN, and advanced optimizers, the proposed technique has the potential to produce trustworthy instruments for the early diagnosis of ADHD, greatly enhancing both patient outcomes and diagnostic accuracy.

Abstract:Computer aided diagnosis methods play an important role in Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) identification. Dynamic functional connectivity (dFC) analysis has been widely used for ADHD diagnosis based on resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI), which can help capture abnormalities of brain activity. However, most existing dFC-based methods only focus on dependencies between two adjacent timestamps, ignoring global dynamic evolution patterns. Furthermore, the majority of these methods fail to adaptively learn dFCs. In this paper, we propose an adaptive spatial-temporal neural network (ASTNet) comprising three modules for ADHD identification based on rs-fMRI time series. Specifically, we first partition rs-fMRI time series into multiple segments using non-overlapping sliding windows. Then, adaptive functional connectivity generation (AFCG) is used to model spatial relationships among regions-of-interest (ROIs) with adaptive dFCs as input. Finally, we employ a temporal dependency mining (TDM) module which combines local and global branches to capture global temporal dependencies from the spatially-dependent pattern sequences. Experimental results on the ADHD-200 dataset demonstrate the superiority of the proposed ASTNet over competing approaches in automated ADHD classification.

Abstract:Attention deficit/Hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a complex, universal and heterogeneous neurodevelopmental disease. The traditional diagnosis of ADHD relies on the long-term analysis of complex information such as clinical data (electroencephalogram, etc.), patients' behavior and psychological tests by professional doctors. In recent years, functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) has been developing rapidly and is widely employed in the study of brain cognition due to its non-invasive and non-radiation characteristics. We propose an algorithm based on convolutional denoising autoencoder (CDAE) and adaptive boosting decision trees (AdaDT) to improve the results of ADHD classification. Firstly, combining the advantages of convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and the denoising autoencoder (DAE), we developed a convolutional denoising autoencoder to extract the spatial features of fMRI data and obtain spatial features sorted by time. Then, AdaDT was exploited to classify the features extracted by CDAE. Finally, we validate the algorithm on the ADHD-200 test dataset. The experimental results show that our method offers improved classification compared with state-of-the-art methods in terms of the average accuracy of each individual site and all sites, meanwhile, our algorithm can maintain a certain balance between specificity and sensitivity.

Abstract:The "brain-cognition-behavior" process is an important pathological pathway in children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Symptom guided multimodal neuroimaging fusion can capture behaviorally relevant and intrinsically linked structural and functional features, which can help to construct a systematic model of the pathology. Analyzing the multimodal neuroimage fusion pattern and exploring how these brain features affect executive function (EF) and leads to behavioral impairment is the focus of this study. Based on gray matter volume (GMV) and fractional amplitude of low frequency fluctuation (fALFF) for 152 ADHD and 102 healthy controls (HC), the total symptom score (TO) was set as a reference to identify co-varying components. Based on the correlation between the identified co-varying components and EF, further mediation analysis was used to explore the relationship between brain image features, EF and clinical symptoms. This study found that the abnormalities of GMV and fALFF in ADHD are mainly located in the default mode network (DMN) and prefrontal-striatal-cerebellar circuits, respectively. GMV in ADHD influences the TO through Metacognition Index, while fALFF in HC mediates the TO through behavior regulation index (BRI). Further analysis revealed that GMV in HC influences fALFF, which further modulates BRI and subsequently affects hyperactivity-impulsivity score. To conclude, structural brain abnormalities in the DMN in ADHD may affect local brain function in the prefrontal-striatal-cerebellar circuit, making it difficult to regulate EF in terms of inhibit, shift, and emotional control, and ultimately leading to hyperactive-impulsive behavior.

Abstract:In recent years, there has been significant interest in the analysis and classification of brain dis-orders using electroencephalography (EEG). We presented machine learning and deep learning (DL) frameworks that integrate an EEG-based brain network with various DL models to diagnose attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). By incorporating an objective biomarker into the diagnostic process, the accuracy and effectiveness of diagnosis could be enhanced. We used public EEG datasets from 61 ADHD youngsters and 60 normally developing children. The raw EEG data underwent preprocessing, including the application of filters in clinically relevant frequency bands and notch filters. From the preprocessed EEG segments, statistical features (e.g., standard deviation, kurtosis) and spectral features (e.g., entropy) were extracted. Principal component analysis (PCA) and chi-square with PCA were used as feature selection methods to obtain the most useful features and keep them. The machine learning models achieved the highest accuracy result of 94.86% by utilizing support vector machines (SVM) with PCA features. Furthermore, integrating models combining a convolutional neural network (CNN) with bidirectional long short-term memory (BiLSTM) networks, and gated recurrent unit-Transformer (GRU-Transformer block) with Chi-square and PCA features achieved accuracies of 94.50% and 95.59%, respectively. The suggested framework demonstrated a wide range of applicability in addressing the identification of ADHD. To evaluate the performance of the proposed models, comparisons were made with existing models, and the proposed system exhibited superior performance. We enhanced EEG-based analysis and categorization of ADHD by demonstrating the capabilities of advanced artificial intelligence models in enhancing diagnostic accuracy and efficacy.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE: Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder affecting children and adults. Previous studies found that functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) can reveal significant group differences in several brain regions between ADHD children and healthy controls during working memory tasks. This study aimed to use fNIRS activation patterns to identify ADHD children from healthy controls.APPROACH: FNIRS signals from 25 ADHD children and 25 healthy controls performing the n-back task were recorded; then, multivariate pattern analysis was used to discriminate ADHD individuals from healthy controls, and classification performance was evaluated for significance by the permutation test.MAIN RESULTS: The results showed that 86.0% ([Formula: see text]) of participants can be correctly classified in leave-one-out cross-validation. The most discriminative brain regions included the bilateral dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, inferior medial prefrontal cortex, right posterior prefrontal cortex, and right temporal cortex.SIGNIFICANCE: This study demonstrated that, in a small sample, multivariate pattern analysis can effectively identify ADHD children from healthy controls based on fNIRS signals, which argues for the potential utility of fNIRS in future assessments.

Abstract:Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is one kind of neurodevelopmental disorders common in children. Due to the complexity of the pathological mechanism, there is a lack of objective diagnostic methods up to now. This paper aimed to propose automatic ADHD diagnostic method using resting state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) data with the spatio-temporal deep learning models. Unlike traditional methods, this paper constructed a deep learning method called 4-D CNN based on granular computing which were trained based on derivative changes in entropy, and can calculate granularity at a coarse level by stacking layers. Considering the structure of rs-fMRI as time-series 3-D frames, several models of spatial and temporal granular computing and fusion were proposed, including feature pooling, long short-term memory (LSTM) and spatio-temporal convolution. This paper introduced an approach to augment dataset which can sample one subject's rs-fMRI frames into several relatively short term pieces with a fixed stride. The public dataset of ADHD-200 Consortium was used to train and validate our method. And the results of evaluations showed that our method outperformed traditional methods on the dataset (accuracy: 71.3%, AUC: 0.80). Individual Classification of ADHD Patients by Integrating Multiscale Neuroimaging Markers and Advanced Pattern Recognition Techniques

Abstract:Accurate classification or prediction of the brain state across individual subject, i.e., healthy, or with brain disorders, is generally a more difficult task than merely finding group differences. The former must be approached with highly informative and sensitive biomarkers as well as effective pattern classification/feature selection approaches. In this paper, we propose a systematic methodology to discriminate attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) patients from healthy controls on the individual level. Multiple neuroimaging markers that are proved to be sensitive features are identified, which include multiscale characteristics extracted from blood oxygenation level dependent (BOLD) signals, such as regional homogeneity (ReHo) and amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations. Functional connectivity derived from Pearson, partial, and spatial correlation is also utilized to reflect the abnormal patterns of functional integration, or, dysconnectivity syndromes in the brain. These neuroimaging markers are calculated on either voxel or regional level. Advanced feature selection approach is then designed, including a brain-wise association study (BWAS). Using identified features and proper feature integration, a support vector machine (SVM) classifier can achieve a cross-validated classification accuracy of 76.15% across individuals from a large dataset consisting of 141 healthy controls and 98 ADHD patients, with the sensitivity being 63.27% and the specificity being 85.11%. Our results show that the most discriminative features for classification are primarily associated with the frontal and cerebellar regions. The proposed methodology is expected to improve clinical diagnosis and evaluation of treatment for ADHD patient, and to have wider applications in diagnosis of general neuropsychiatric disorders.

Abstract:Objective: Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is one of the most widespread neurodevelopmental disorders diagnosed in childhood. ADHD is diagnosed by following the guidelines of Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5). According to DSM-5, ADHD has not yet identified a specific cause, and thus researchers continue to investigate this field. Therefore, the primary objective of this work is to present a study to find the subset of channels or brain regions that best classify ADHD vs Typically Developing children by means of Electroencephalograms (EEG). Methods: To achieve this goal, we present a novel approach to identify the brain regions that best classify ADHD using EEG and Deep Learning (DL). First, we perform a filtering and artefact removal process on the EEG signal. Then we generate different subsets of EEG channels depending on their location on the scalp (hemispheres, lobes, sets of lobes and single channels) and using backward and forward stepwise feature selection methods. Finally, we feed the DL neural network with each set, and compute the f1-score. Results and conclusions: Based on the obtained results, the Frontal Lobe (FL) (0.8081 f1-score) and the Left Hemisphere (LH) (0.8056 f1-score) provide more significant information detecting individuals with ADHD, than using the entire set of EEG Channels (0.8067 f1-score). However, when combining the Temporal, Parietal and Occipital Lobes (TL, PL, OL), better results (0.8097 f1-score) were obtained compared with using only the FL and LH subsets. The best performance was obtained using Feature Selection Methods. In the case of the Backward Stepwise Feature Selection method, a combination of 14 EEG channels yielded a 0.8281 f1-score. Similarly, using the Forward Stepwise Feature Selection method, a combination of 11 EEG channels yielded a 0.8271 f1-score. These findings hold significant value for physicians in the quest to better understand the underlying causes of ADHD.
