Abstract:Background: A controlled, blind research study was conducted to define the initial inflammatory response and lung damage associated with the death of immature adult Dirofilaria immitis in cats as compared with cats developing adult heartworm infections and cats on preventive medication. Methods: Three groups of cats were utilized, 10 per group. All cats were infected with 100 third-stage (L3) larvae by subcutaneous injection. Group A cats were treated topically with selamectin (Revolution®; Zoetis) per label directions at 28 days post infection (PI) and once monthly for 8 months. Group B cats were treated orally with ivermectin (Ivomec®; Merial) at 150 μg/kg at 70 days PI, then every 2 weeks for 5 months. Group C cats were untreated PI. At baseline (Day 0) and on Days 70, 110, 168, and 240 PI, peripheral blood, serum, bronchial lavage, and thoracic radiographic images were collected on all cats. Upon completion of the study (Day 245), cats were euthanized and necropsies were conducted. Results: Results were analyzed statistically between groups by ANOVA and by paired sample T testing for changes within the group over time. The selamectin-treated cats (Group A) did not develop radiographically evident changes throughout the study and were free of adult heartworms or worm fragments at necropsy. The heartworm life cycle was abbreviated with oral doses of ivermectin (Group B), shown by the absence of adult heartworms or worm fragments at necropsy. The early stage of immature adult worm in Group B cats, however, did induce severe pulmonary airway, interstitial, and arterial lung lesions, revealing that the abbreviated infection is a significant cause of respiratory pathology in cats. Cats in Groups B and C could not be differentiated based on radiographic changes, serologic antibody titers, complete blood count, or bronchoalveolar lavage cytology at any time point throughout the study. Eighty percent of cats in Group A and 100% of cats in Groups B and C became heartworm antibody positive at some time point post infection. Conclusions: The clinical implications of this study are that cats that become infected with immature adult heartworms may not develop fully mature heartworms and are only transiently heartworm antibody positive, but do develop Heartworm-Associated Respiratory Disease (HARD).
High-resolution CT evaluation of bronchial lumen to vertebral body, pulmonary artery to vertebral body and bronchial lumen to pulmonary artery ratios in Dirofilaria immitis-infected cats with and without selamectin administration

Abstract:Objectives The bronchial lumen to pulmonary artery (BA) ratio is utilized to evaluate pulmonary pathology on CT images. The BA ratio may be unreliable when changes are present in bronchial and pulmonary arteries concurrently. Bronchial lumen to vertebral body (BV) and pulmonary artery to vertebral body (AV) ratios have been established in normal cats and may serve as an alternative. This study aimed to evaluate the BV, AV and BA ratios in cats before and after infection with Dirofilaria immitis, with and without selamectin administration, and to characterize the distribution of disease. Methods Archived CT images were reviewed from three groups of cats: D immitis-infected untreated (n = 6); infected pretreated with selamectin (n = 6); and uninfected untreated (n = 5). The BV, AV and BA ratios were calculated for all lung lobes for baseline (D0) and day 240 (D240) postinfection. Ratios and percentage change from baseline were compared between lobes and between groups. Results BV and AV ratios were more consistent in identifying abnormalities when disease was present in bronchial and arteries concurrently than BA ratios. Infected untreated cats had significant changes in both BV and AV ratios and percentage change from baseline. Abnormal BV and AV ratios were noted in the infected selamectin group, although less widely distributed. Conclusions and relevance The BV and AV ratios more accurately identified bronchial and pulmonary artery abnormalities in D immitis-infected cats. Both bronchial and pulmonary artery changes were present in infected cats, decreasing the diagnostic application of the BA ratio. Pulmonary artery changes were more widely distributed than bronchial changes in the lung. Heartworm-infected cats receiving selamectin had bronchial and pulmonary artery changes but to a lesser extent than untreated heartworm-infected cats. The CT-derived BV and AV ratios are a useful measure to evaluate lung disease of cats.
Arachidonic acid and anandamide have opposite modulatory actions at the glycine transporter, GLYT1a

Abstract:The GLYT1 subtypes of glycine transporter are expressed in glia surrounding excitatory synapses in the mammalian CNS and may regulate synaptic glycine concentrations required for activation of the NMDA subtypes of glutamate receptor. In this report we demonstrate that the rate of glycine transport by GLYT1 is inhibited by arachidonic acid. The cyclo‐oxygenase and lipoxygenase inhibitors indomethacin and nordihydroguaiaretic acid, and the protein kinase C inhibitor staurosporine, had no effect on the extent of arachidonic acid inhibition of transport, which suggests that the inhibitory effects of arachidonic acid result from a direct interaction with the transporter. In contrast to arachidonic acid, its amide derivative, anandamide, and the more stable analogue R1‐methanandamide stimulate glycine transport. This stimulation is unlikely to be a secondary effect of cannabinoid receptor stimulation because the cannabinoid receptor agonist WIN 55 212–2 had no effect on transport. We suggest that the stimulatory effects of anandamide on GLYT1 are due to a direct interaction with the transporter.

Abstract:Objective:To evaluate the value of MRI in the diagnosis of elbow lymphadenitis caused by cat scratch discase.Methods:MRI findmgs of elbow lymphadenitis in 3 cases with cat scratch disease proved by clinical history and pa- thology were retrospectively analyzed.Results:Of the 3 patients,five enlarged lymph nodes were assessed with the size of 0.8～3.0cm.MRI showed iso intensity on T_1 WI and hyper intensity on T_2WI.Solitary subcutaneous lymphadenophy with homogeneous signal intensity and moderately enhanced after contrast administration was showed in one patient.Two pa- tients had two subcutaneous lymph nodes for each,with intra-nodal spiculated low signal intensities on both T_1 WI and T_2 WI,obvious enhancement was showed in one patient and no enhancement was shown in another,yet peripheral petal-like enhancement was assessed showing a rosette appearance in this patient.All three cases had extensive subcutaneous abnor- real signal intensities adjacent to the lymph node showing linear hypointensity on T_1 WI and hyperintensity on T_2 WI.Con- clusinn:Characteristic MRI findings can be assessed in the lymphadenopatby caused by cat scratch disease,correct diagnosis could be obtained when such imaging features were in combination with the clinical history of cat scratching.
Computed tomography, radiology and echocardiography in cats naturally infected with Aelurostrongylus abstrusus

Abstract:Objectives The aims of the study were to describe the radiographic and computed tomographic features in cats naturally infected with Aelurostrongylus abstrusus, and to identify signs of pulmonary hypertension with echocardiography. Methods Fourteen cats positive on Baermann test for A abstrusus were included in the study. All cats underwent thoracic radiography, CT and echocardiography. Results The most common clinical signs were coughing (10/14) and dyspnoea (5/14). Radiographic findings included a generalised unstructured interstitial pulmonary pattern (8/14), mixed bronchointerstitioalveolar pattern (3/14) and bronchointerstitial pattern with bronchial wall thickening (3/14). Sternal lymphadenopathy was detected on thoracic radiographs in six cats. On CT, features were mixed bronchointerstitioalveolar pattern with ground-glass appearance in six cats, interstitioalveolar with multiple pulmonary nodules in five, interstitial ground-glass infiltrates in three, regional lymph node enlargement in 11 (10 sternal, three cranial mediastinal and three tracheobronchial lymph nodes) and subpleural thickening in four. None of the thoracic radiographs revealed subpleural thickening. In all cases, pulmonary vessels were normal in terms of size, shape and attenuation on both radiography and CT. Pulmonary hypertension and cardiac abnormalities were not observed in any cat during echocardiography. Conclusions and relevance CT provided a more thorough characterisation of pulmonary and mediastinal lesions compared with thoracic radiographs in cats naturally infected with A abstrusus. Although feline aelurostrongylosis has been previously associated with histopathological lesions in lung arteries, in this cohort clinical evidence of pulmonary hypertension was not documented.

Abstract:Background: Veterinary knowledge regarding feline heartworm has been increasing significantly over the past two decades. Necropsy surveys of shelter cats have shown feline adult heartworm infection prevalence to be 5-20% of the rate in unprotected dogs; however, other studies have shown feline heartworm antibody prevalence up to 33%, reflecting higher exposure rates and potential immature adult infections. Thus, the true prevalence of feline heartworm infection is likely underestimated due to the limitations of current diagnostic techniques, inadequate testing protocols, and the high likelihood of cats exhibiting transient clinical signs or dying without confirmation of infection. Diagnosing Feline Heartworm Disease (FHWD), also referred to as Heartworm Associated Respiratory Disease (HARD), is one of the conundrums of veterinary medicine. The purpose of this study was to evaluate and characterize the occurrence of Heartworm Associated Respiratory Disease [HARD] in shelter cats, naturally-infected with D.immitis. Methods: Fifty shelter cats slated for euthanasia between December 2009 and June 2010 were investigated by gross necropsy, radiography, serology, and lung histopathology using techniques that have been established in experimental models of cat heartworm infection. The relationship between pulmonary vascular disease and serological markers for heartworm was also examined using correlations and statistical modeling. Serology included standard heartworm antigen test and a commonly used heartworm antibody test. Also included were heat-treated heartworm antigen test and two additional heartworm antibody tests previously evaluated on experimentally-infected cats. Results: None of the cats were heartworm antibody (HW Ab) positive on a commonly used HW Ab test used by many reference laboratories even though 20% of the study cats were heartworm antigen (HW Ag) positive on heat-treated samples. Two additional HW Ab test were positive on 26% and 22% of the study cats. The combination of heat-treated HW Ag, HW Ab tests, and histopathology indicated 34% of the study cats had HARD. Conclusions: Utilizing both, the above tests, and thoracic radiographs, enhanced the ability to predict vascular disease, possibly caused by infection with immature and adult heartworms and supported the premise that cats develop heartworm disease at the same rate as dogs.
Atypical case of subcutaneous filariosis in a cat caused by Dirofilaria immitis

Abstract:Subcutaneous dirofilariosis is a well-known disease caused mainly by Dirofilaria repens and described in several mammalian species including humans, dogs, and cats. Additionally, early developing stages of the heartworm Dirofilaria immitis are rarely reported in subcutaneous localization from humans and dogs. To our knowledge, confirmed clinical evidence of this condition has not been described in the cats yet, even if the feline hosts can be affected either by the classic adult-related heartworm form or heartworm-associated respiratory disease (HARD) caused by immature stages. A 2 year old, spayed male cat was presented for three subcutaneous nodules on the head and trunk. The cat lived in Northern Italy and was regularly vaccinated and treated monthly with an antiparasitic spot on formulation containing selamectin. One of the three nodules was surgically excised and examined. Histology showed the presence of a nodular lesion in the subcutis characterized by a severe inflammatory infiltrate composed of macrophages, small lymphocytes, with fewer eosinophils, and mast cells, supported by a proliferation of mature fibroblasts (fibrosis). Inflammatory cells were multifocally surrounding sections of parasites identified as adult nematodes. Microscopic features were compatible with D. immitis , which has been molecularly confirmed (98.2% identity to D. immitis isolate OP107739). The cat tested negative for D. immitis antigenemia and the two remaining nodules disappeared spontaneously in a few months. In region where heartworm is prevalent, aberrant localization of D. immitis should be considered in the differential diagnoses of subcutaneous filarial worms in cats and dogs.

A SIFT Method Application for a Six DOF Manipulator Grasping an Object against Complicated Environment

Abstract:This paper presents an image process based results for controlling a manipulator grasping an object against complicated background environment. Some problems caused by environment which exist including 1) orientation and distance measurement inaccuracy - 2) image distortion from lens - 3) grasp point estimation and force-closure judgment - 4) pose control of manipulator - 5) complex background and light reflection. The work begins from perception of environment and objects by image system. The specified objects searching based on SIFT approach keeps working with the pan-tilt vision till finding out those targets. The information at least provided by SIFTreg contains 1) recognition confidence (%) - 2) centred location (X, Y) of an object in image frame and estimated distance in absolute frame (D) and 3) matched index (user defined text) for an object. By these data, the manipulator controller can align the gripper frame to the object as close as possible and execute grasp mission. Both searching and tracking for specific objects in these configurations are proven powerful.
Effects of intravenous and subcutaneous heartworm homogenate from doxycycline-treated and untreated donor dogs on bronchial reactivity and lung in cats

Abstract:A controlled, blind research study was conducted to define the innate response of lungs in specific pathogen free (SPF) cats to intravenous (n=10) or subcutaneous (n=4) administration of homogenate of adult Dirofilaria immitis from donor dogs compared with lung response in control cats (n=6). There was no difference in cats that received heartworm homogenate IV for 18 days from donor dogs treated with doxycycline for 1 month compared with cats given heartworm homogenate from untreated donor dogs. Cats did not develop clinical signs, and no radiographic changes were noted. Cats given SC heartworm homogenate at lower concentration than IV groups did not develop histologic changes. Cats that received IV heartworm homogenate for 18 days developed mild interstitial and peribronchial myofibrocyte proliferation and smooth muscle proliferation of the pulmonary arteries. Bronchial ring contractility in vitro was blunted in the IV homogenate cats to the agonists acetylcholine and 5-hydroxytryptamine. Cats in the SC group had increased sensitivity to histamine at high concentrations but normal contractility and relaxation responses to other agonists. No increase in mast cells was noted in lung tissues of cats given homogenate. In the absence of bronchial wall remodeling, cats given IV homogenate had blunted responses to bronchial constriction, but normal relaxation to nitroprusside and substance P and increased sensitivity to histamine. In the absence adult heartworms, the homogenate of adult heartworms in the circulation of SPF cats induced a direct effect on lung parenchyma and altered bronchial ring reactivity.
Thoracic radiography in the cat: Identification of cardiomegaly and congestive heart failure

Abstract:Thoracic radiography is one of the most commonly employed diagnostic tools for the clinical evaluation of cats with suspected heart disease and is the standard diagnostic method in the confirmation of cardiogenic pulmonary edema. In the past, interpretation of feline radiographs focused on a description of the qualitative radiographic features of feline heart disease or the measurement of the cardiac silhouette in healthy cats and cats with different cardiovascular disorders. More recently, studies have begun to critically address the issue of the diagnostic accuracy of thoracic radiography in the diagnostic work-up of cats with heart disease. In these studies, qualitative and quantitative radiographic parameters were compared to echocardiographic findings to evaluate the usefulness of thoracic radiography for the identification of cardiac enlargement and pulmonary edema in the cat. Thoracic radiography is reasonably specific but has a low sensitivity when identifying cardiomegaly in cats with mild structural heart disease. Feline cardiogenic pulmonary edema has a variable radiographic presentation and several specific radiographic findings (i.e., enlargement of the left atrium and the pulmonary veins) can be absent or non-recognizable in affected cats.
Fatal Pulmonary Hypertension and Right-Sided Congestive Heart Failure in a Kitten Infected with Aelurostrongylus abstrusus

Abstract:Aelurostrongylus abstrusus is considered the most important respiratory nematode of domestic cats worldwide. This parasite inhabits the alveoli, alveolar ducts, and bronchioles and causes a subacute to chronic respiratory clinical disease. Clinical signs may occur in domestic cats of any age, though they are more often described in young animals. Physical examination, echocardiography, thoracic radiography, pulmonary and cardiac pathological findings, classical, and molecular parasitological analysis of a six-month-old kitten referred at the Veterinary Teaching Hospital of the University of Pisa (Italy) led to a diagnosis of parasitic bronchopneumonia caused by A. abstrusus, which was complicated by severe pulmonary hypertension (PH) and right-sided congestive heart failure (R-CHF) that caused the death of the animal. Cases of reversible PH associated with A. abstrusus infection have been seldom reported in cats. This is the first report of fatal PH and R-CHF in a kitten with clinical aelurostrongylosis.

Abstract:Vibrio parahaemolyticus strain 10260 was isolated from a patient with diarrhea. Biochemical and serological characters of the strain were analyzed. This strain possessed a new combination of O- and K-antigens. From the results of this study, the serotype of V. parahaemolyticus strain 10260 was proposed as O1:K20.

Abstract:Heartworm disease caused by Dirofilaria immitis is a serious and underdiagnosed cardiovascular condition in domestic ferrets. Hemodynamic changes caused by parasitization in ferrets cause a potentially fatal syndrome, but its clinical findings and treatment have not yet been standardized. The objective of this study was to describe the clinical case of a successful surgical extraction in a ferret infected by D. immitis. The patient was a 2-year-old, 1.5 kg asymptomatic male domestic ferret. The infection was diagnosed using a commercial test for the detection of D. immitis antigens. Subsequently, their clinical status was evaluated using serological and imaging diagnostic tests, and it was finally decided to perform surgical extraction of the adult worms. The ferret was anesthetized and placed in the left lateral decubitus position to perform a venotomy in the right jugular vein. Endoscopic extraction basket-shaped devices were used in the right atrial cavity under fluoroscopic guidance following the Seldinger endovascular surgery technique. With careful handling, two adult parasites were manually removed. A transthoracic echocardiogram performed after the procedure confirmed the absence of heartworms. The ferret recovered without complications and was discharged within 24 h. In the clinical review, 30 days after surgery, no notable alterations or symptoms were observed. This case report describes the first complete surgical removal of adult D. immitis parasites in a naturally infected ferret.
Diagnosis of feline pulmonary helminthiasis caused by Aelurostrongylus abstrusus

Abstract:Pulmonary elurostrongylosis caused by A. abstrusus is widely reported in many countries worldwide. This study describes the detection of elurostrongylosis among domestic cats in Ukraine. Spontaneously infected cats showing signs of lung involvement were selected for the study. The main observed symptom in all animals was either persistent or intermittent coughing. Radiographic findings revealed varying degrees of lung tissue involvement from moderate to extensive, with intensified vascular patterns and clear densification with signs of edema. Morphological blood examinations indicated mild leukocytosis (15.5±1.34 Г/L) and eosinophilia (6.0±0.01%). Fecal examination using the Baermann method detected first-stage A. abstrusus larvae in two out of 47 cats. Bronchoalveolar lavage revealed actively motile first-stage A. abstrusus parasites in 43 out of 47 cats upon microscopic examination. Laboratory results showed higher efficacy of alveolar lavage (48.8%) compared to the Baermann method (17.1%) in parasite detection, emphasizing its significance in diagnosis. Diagnosing A. abstrusus is complicated due to the absence of specific clinical signs and limitations of diagnostic methods. Coproscopic examination methods may yield false-negative results due to low larval concentration and insufficient morphological differentiation from other helminth larvae. Therefore, an integrated approach combining copromicroscopy, blood analysis, and radiographic examinations is crucial for accurate diagnosis. Only with proper diagnosis can a reliable prognosis be formulated and an effective treatment plan(scheme) developed for the patient. Elurostrongylosis should be considered in the differential diagnosis for cats by veterinary practitioners. Further research in Ukraine is necessary for better understanding the epidemiology, risks, and control of A. abstrusus spread among the feline population. Abstract:Heartworm (HTW) infection in cats is associated with persistent pulmonary pathology, even when clinical signs are absent. Treatment options for cats are limited once infected, making prevention an important topic for discussion with cat owners. In Brazil, tests to detect feline HTW infections are unavailable, likely leading to an underestimation of its impact on the wellbeing of cats. The present study investigated the seroprevalence of HTW antigen in cats living in an area with high canine HTW prevalence and investigated risk factors and clinical signs associated with HTW disease in cats from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Clinical examinations were conducted, and serological evaluations performed with a point-of-care test (SNAP ® Feline Triple ® Test, IDEXX Laboratories, Inc.). A total of 586 cats were examined. The HTW antigen seroprevalence was 1.2%. Heartworm positive results were significantly associated with vomiting and abnormal lung sounds. Results from this study indicate that cats residing in areas of high canine HTW prevalence should have HTW disease as a differential diagnosis when presenting with compatible clinical signs. Veterinarians should prioritize client education and promote regular use of effective prophylaxis to protect feline health.

Abstract:Canine dirofilariasis is a global parasitic disease caused by Dirofilaria immitis with a pooled prevalence of 10.91%. Given the zoonotic potential and clinical importance of canine dirofilariasis, investigating its diagnosis and treatment is deemed important, which may also help to control its prevalence. Current diagnostic methods include microfilarial tests, immunodiagnostic antigen tests, polymerase chain reaction technique, and imaging. In which the combination of microfilarial tests and antigen tests is recommended to use in annual screening due to the established specificity, sensitivity, and accuracy. Despite the high accuracy of polymerase chain reaction technique, it has not been broadly used in commercial settings. Imaging, on the other hand, helps to determine the severity of infection. In terms of treatment, 3 injections of melarsomine dihydrochloride with adjunct use of macrocyclic lactones and tetracyclines are recommended to all dogs, except those with caval syndrome. However, due to inevitable severe complications, prevention is deemed vital. The use of macrocyclic lactones for prevention is preferred and highly recommended to all owners.

Abstract:Dirofilaria immitis, commonly known as heartworm (HW), is a parasitic nematode transmitted by various mosquito species, leading to heartworm disease (HWD) in dogs. Diagnosis of HW typically involves antigen or microfilariae detection, or visualization of adult worms through imaging or post mortem examination. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and micro RNA (miRNA) detection have been explored for HW diagnosis.
