Abstract:The marine yeast Rhodosporidium paludigenum was tested for its biocontrol efficacy in reducing postharvest gray mold of cherry tomatoes caused by Botrytis cinerea in vitro and in vivo tests. A previously unreported gray mold antagonist, R. paludigenum, significantly reduced disease incidence on cherry tomatoes. The results showed that suspensions containing 1×108CFU/ml washed cells of R. paludigenum provided the highest levels of inhibition of gray mold, while the unwashed cell suspension provided less protection against the disease after 5days at 25°C. Increasing concentrations of R. paludigenum influenced decay incidence in cherry tomato wounds: the disease incidence decreased as the concentration of R. paludigenum was increased. Moreover, in the small-scale experiment, the incidence of gray mold on cherry tomatoes treated with R. paludigenum was 14.7% and 46.3% of the control at 15°C after 10days, respectively. In cherry tomato wounds, the population of R. paludigenum reached peak levels 72h after inoculation, and then began to decline slowly. In conclusion, our results showed that competition for nutrients may have an important role in biological control of gray mold of cherry tomatoes with R. paludigenum.
Suppression of Postharvest Blue Mould of Apple Fruit by Cryptococcus Laurentii and N6‐benzyladenine

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Cryptococcus laurentii is a well-known postharvest yeast antagonist. N-6-benzyladenine (6-BA), a cytokinin plant hormone, has a role in retarding ripening and senescence of harvested produce. This study was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of C. laurentii and 6-BA in reducing the blue mould disease of apple fruit.RESULTS: The combination of C. laurentii with 6-BA (20 mu g mL(-1)) was more effective in suppressing the Penicillium expansum infection in apple fruit wounds than C. laurentii alone, although 6-BA (20 mu g mL(-1)) alone neither affected the growth of C. laurentii nor reduced the incidence of the blue mould disease in vivo. Moreover, treatment of apple fruit with C. laurentii and 6-BA (20 mu g mL(-1)) resulted in stimulation of superoxide dismutase activity but in inhibition of the increase in peroxidase activity.CONCLUSION: 6-BA (20 mu g mL(-1)) could enhance the efficacy of C. laurentii in reducing the postharvest blue mould disease of apple fruit, which offered great potential in minimizing the postharvest decay of apple fruit in an integrated pest management strategy. Inhibiting Penicillium Expansum Infection on Pear Fruit by Cryptococcus Laurentii and Cytokinin

Abstract:The effectiveness of the cytokinin N6-benzyladenine (6-BA), alone or in combination with the biocontrol yeast Cryptococcus laurentii, in controlling blue mold on pear fruit was assessed. The application of 6-BA (500–2000μgmL−1) or C. laurentii was effective in reducing Penicillium expansum infection in pear fruit wounds, but its efficacy declined rapidly as the incubation time increased. Integrated application of C. laurentii and 6-BA at 500–2000μgmL−1, especially at the optimal concentration (1000μgmL−1), resulted in a more effective and stable inhibition of the mold rots than that of the 6-BA or C. laurentii alone. Treatments of pears with 6-BA at 1000μgmL−1, alone or with C. laurentii also led to an increase in catalase activity and an inhibition of the activities of both peroxidase and lipoxygenase as well as ethylene production. In addition, 6-BA from 20 to 2000μgmL−1 did not influence the population growth of C. laurentii in pear fruit wounds. These data suggested that a combination of 6-BA and C. laurentii could integrate the dual biological activities from 6-BA and C. laurentii and might be developed into a novel protection strategy for reduction of the blue mold rot of pear fruit.
In Vitro Inhibition of Postharvest Pathogens of Fruit and Control of Gray Mold of Strawberry and Green Mold of Citrus by Aureobasidin A

Abstract:Aureobasidin A (AbA), an antifungal cyclic depsipeptide antibiotic produced by Aureobasidium pullulans R 106, has previously been shown to be effective against a wide range of fungi and protozoa. Here we report the inhibitory effects of AbA on spore germination, germ tuber elongation and hyphal growth of five pathogenic fungi including Penicillium digitatum, P. italicum, P. expansum, Botrytis cinerea and Monilinia fructicola, which are major pathogens causing postharvest diseases of a variety of fruits. AbA inhibited five pathogenic fungi by reducing conidial germination rates, delaying conidial germination initiation, restricting elongation of germ tuber and mycelium, as well as inducing abnormal alternations of morphology of genii tubes and hyphae of these fungi. The sensitivity of these fungi to AbA was pathogen species-dependent. P digitatum was the most sensitive and M.fructicola the least. Importantly, AbA at 50 mu g/ml was effective in controlling the citrus green mold and in reducing the strawberry gray mold incidence and severity, caused by P. digitatum and B. cinerea, respectively, after artificial inoculation. AbA and/or its analogs, therefore, hold promise as relatively safe and promising fungicide candidates to control postharvest decays of fruits, because AbA targets the inositol phosphorylceramide (IPC) synthase, an enzyme essential for fungi but absent from mammals. Inhibitory Abilities of Bacillus Isolates and Their Culture Filtrates Against the Gray Mold Caused by Botrytis Cinerea on Postharvest Fruit

Abstract:Botrytis cinerea, a major phytopathogenic fungus, has been reported to infect more than 200 crop species worldwide, and it causes massive losses in yield. The aim of this study was to evaluate the inhibitory abilities and effects of Bacillus amyloliquefaciens RS-25, Bacillus licheniformis MG-4, Bacillus subtilis Z-14, and Bacillus subtilis Pnf-4 and their culture filtrates and extracts against the gray mold caused by B. cinerea on postharvest tomato, strawberry, and grapefruit. The results revealed that the cells of Z-14, culture filtrate of RS25, and cells of Z-14 showed the strongest biocontrol activity against the gray mold on the strawberry, grape, and tomato fruit, respectively. All the strains produced volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and the VOCs of Pnf-4 displayed the highest inhibition values. Based on headspace solid-phase microextraction in combination with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, esters accounted for the largest percentage of the VOCs produced by RS-25, MG-4, Z-14, and Pnf-4 (36.80%, 29.58%, 30.78%, and 36.26%, respectively). All the strains showed potent cellulase and protease activities, but no chitinase activity. RS-25, Z-14, and MG-4, but not Pnf-4, grew on chrome azurol S agar, and an orange halo was formed around the colonies. All the strains showed biofilm formation, fruit colonization, and lipopeptide production, which may be the main modes of action of the antagonists against B. cinerea on the fruit. This study provides the basis for developing natural biocontrol agents against the gray mold caused by B. cinerea on postharvest fruit.

Abstract:Botrytis cinerea is an economically devastating necrotrophic fungus that is responsible for gray mold infection of table grapes. Fungicides application remains the most common approach in its control. However, in consideration of food and environmental safety, safe and eco-friendly alternatives are desirable to manage gray mold. Pterostilbene is a natural antimicrobial metabolite that inhibits growth of several phytopathogenic fungi. Moreover, pterostilbene has been widely used as a food additive on the basis of its safety and oxidation properties. However, the specific inhibitory effects of pterostilbene for pathogen control of postharvest fruit and its precise mechanism of action remain to be defined. Here, 0.25 g L−1 pterostilbene could suppress the development of gray mold in table grapes. Fluorescent staining indicated that pterostilbene-mediated disease suppression is mediated through loss of plasma membrane integrity. Electron microscopy revealed that pterostilbene inhibits B. cinerea by altering the morphology of the hyphae and conidiophores, with destruction of the plasma membrane and organelles. Furthermore, quantitative real-time PCR highlighted pterostilbene-mediated gene modulation and overexpression of genes associated with laccase production and cellular damage on B. cinerea, together with increased laccase activity. These data better define the mechanisms through which pterostilbene inhibits B. cinerea growth, thus making pterostilbene an attractive candidate in postharvest fruit disease management strategies.

Abstract:[Aims] This paper aims to study the compound microbial disinfectant against cucumber gray mold.[Methods] The affinity test was carried out by plate confrontation method;The optimum ratio was determined by measuring the effect of strain fermentation on the spores and hyphae of gray mold pathogens.The pot test was used to determine the prophylactic effect of preparation.[Results] The strains D1,BSD-2,ch2-22 have synergistic effect.When the ratio of the three fermentation filtrates was 5∶4∶1 and the number of live spore was 1.5x107 cfu/mL,the compound fungicide for control of gray mold of cucumber was 86.25％.[Conclusions] Compound biocides have a strong anti-disease and promoting effect on botrytis cinerea,which has a potential to develop as a new type of biological pesticide.
Unlocking antagonistic potential of Bacillus amyloliquefaciens KRS005 to control gray mold

Abstract:To establish a safe, efficient, and simple biocontrol measure for gray mold disease caused by Botrytis cinerea , the basic characteristics and antifungal activity of KRS005 were studied from multiple aspects including morphological observation, multilocus sequence analysis and typing (MLSA–MLST), physical-biochemical assays, broad-spectrum inhibitory activities, control efficiency of gray mold, and determination of plant immunity. The strain KRS005, identified as Bacillus amyloliquefaciens , demonstrated broad-spectrum inhibitory activities against various pathogenic fungi by dual confrontation culture assays, of which the inhibition rate of B. cinerea was up to 90.3%. Notably, through the evaluation of control efficiency, it was found that KRS005 fermentation broth could effectively control the occurrence of tobacco leaves gray mold by determining the lesion diameter and biomass of B. cinerea on tobacco leaves still had a high control effect after dilution of 100 folds. Meanwhile, KRS005 fermentation broth had no impact on the mesophyll tissue of tobacco leaves. Further studies showed that plant defense-related genes involved in reactive oxygen species (ROS), salicylic acid (SA), and jasmonic acid (JA)-related signal pathways were significantly upregulated when tobacco leaves were sprayed with KRS005 cell-free supernatant. In addition, KRS005 could inhibit cell membrane damage and increase the permeability of B. cinerea . Overall, KRS005, as a promising biocontrol agent, would likely serve as an alternative to chemical fungicides to control gray mold.

Effect of Combining Wuyiencin and Pyrimethanil on Controlling Grape Gray Mold and Delaying Resistance Development in Botrytis cinerea

Abstract:By screening the compounding combination of Wuyiencin and chemical agents, this study aims to delay the emergence of chemical agent resistance, and provide a technical reference for scientific and rational fungicides technology. This study investigated the impacts of the antibiotic wuyiencin derived from Streptomyces albulus var. wuyiensis and its combination with pyrimethanil on the inhibition of Botrytis cinerea. Treatment with wuyiencin (≥80 µg mL-1) strongly inhibited the pathogenicity of B. cinerea and activated the plant defense response against B. cinerea. Application of 80-100 µg mL-1 wuyiencin effectively controlled grape gray mold (by 57.6-88.1% on leaves and 46.7-96.6% on fruits). Consequently, the application of 80-100 µg mL-1 wuyiencin effectively mitigated grape gray mold incidence, leading to a substantial reduction in disease symptoms to nearly imperceptible levels. When wuyiencin (at the median effective concentration [EC50]) was combined with pyrimethanil (EC50) at a ratio of 7:3, it exhibited the highest efficacy in inhibiting B. cinerea growth. This combination was significantly more potent (p < 0.05) than using wuyiencin or pyrimethanil alone in controlling gray mold on grape leaves and fruits. Furthermore, the combination effectively delayed resistance development in gray mold. The experimental results show that wuyiencin can delay resistance development by affecting the expression of methionine biosynthesis genes and reducing the activity of the cell wall-degrading enzyme activity.

Abstract:SummaryStrains of Cryptococcus laurentii are useful biocontrol yeasts in controlling postharvest fruit diseases. Gibberellic acid (GA3), as a plant growth regulator, is associated with many plant growth and development processes. The results from this study showed that the combination of C. laurentii at 1 × 108 cells mL−1 and GA3 at 200 μg mL−1 could produce a more efficient control of both the blue and grey mould rots of apple fruit caused by Penicillium expansum and Botrytis cinerea, respectively. Moreover, this combined treatment could stimulate a great increase in the activities of both superoxide dismutase and catalase, however, it suppressed the increase of peroxidase activity in apple fruit. In addition, GA3 alone at 200 μg mL−1 had little influence on the incidence and development of both the diseases on apple wounds, and it had no effect on the spore germination of both P. expansum and B. cinereain vitro as well as the population of C. laurentiiin vivo. Therefore, we deduced that the efficacy of this combined treatment in controlling the postharvest diseases in apple fruit could be linked to its capability of adjusting the fruit‐mediated resistance on the basis of the antagonistic activity of the biocontrol yeast itself.
Antifungal mechanism of Bacillus amyloliquefaciens SC-B15 and its application in cereal mildewproof and grape preservation

Abstract:Microorganisms and their metabolites play vital roles in inhibiting the growth of toxic-producing fungi. Here, Bacillus amyloliquefaciens SC-B15 showed over 64% inhibition of six mycotoxin-producing fungi and the best inhibition of A. ochraceus (81%). Meanwhile, the supernatant fraction of >10 kDa showed the best inhibition against A. ochraceus and the antifungal proteins were probably cell wall hydrolytic enzymes. Our study showed that the antifungal components lead to the destruction of mycelium and spores of A. carbonarius , while also affecting gene expression of cell wall integrity signaling pathways and secondary metabolic processes, such as leading to substantial downregulation of pks genes and affecting the synthesis of OTA precursors. The antifungal fraction could markedly reduce the spot diameter (66.19%) and Ochratoxin A (OTA) accumulation (63.56%) of grape wounds, and reduce A. carbonarius growth (64.78%) and OTA accumulation (84.41%) during cereal storage. Our research indicates that the SC-B15 strain has a promising prospect in the control of Aspergillus and OTA contamination.

Abstract:Biological control by microbial antagonists has been proposed as a viable strategy for the control of postharvest diseases in fruit. In the present study, biocontrol efficacy of the bacterial antagonist Lactobacillus plantarum CM-3 against gray mold infection on harvested grapes was documented along with the underlying physiological and molecular mechanisms responsible for biocontrol activity. In this regard, a transcriptomic analysis of the response of grapes to L. plantarum CM3 was conducted. Results indicated that L. plantarum CM-3 significantly decreased the level of natural postharvest decay in grapes without causing any adverse effects on quality traits. Treatment of grapes with L. plantarum CM-3 (1 × 109 CFU mL−1) resulted in a 55 % reduction in disease incidence caused by Botrytis cinerea. Meanwhile, L. plantarum CM-3 enhanced the activity of several enzymes in grapes that are closely associated with defense, including POD, PPO, CAT, APX, PAL, and GLU. RNA-seq analysis indicated extensive changes in the gene expression profile of grape berries in response to being treated with L. plantarum CM-3. In total, 1,327 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified, among which 78.1 % (1,037) were upregulated and 21.9 % (290) were downregulated. Numerous pathways were strongly influenced by the L. plantarum CM-3 treatment, including signal perception and transduction, maintenance of reactive oxygen species (ROS) homeostasis, transcriptional and post-transcriptional regulation, primary metabolic pathways, and secondary metabolism. Additionally, the expression of 22 DEGs linked to enhancing disease resistance was analyzed by RT-qPCR and their expression levels were found to well correspond with the results obtained in the analysis of the RNA-seq data. Our data indicate that L. plantarum CM-3 can enhance host resistance by altering the expression of defense genes and their corresponding proteins, including PR1, WRKY33, WRKY22, PTI6 and peroxidase isoenzyme. Collectively, results of our study indicate that L. plantarum CM-3 treatment enhances the disease resistance of harvested grapes through a comprehensive and complex regulatory network. These findings provide new information on the molecular mechanism responsible for the enhancement of host disease resistance in grapes by L. plantarum CM-3. It also demonstrates a biocontrol strategy that can be used to elicit defense responses in fruit against fungal pathogens.

Abstract:Postharvest strawberry is susceptible to gray mold disease caused by Botrytis cinerea , which seriously damage the storage capacity of fruits. Biological control has been implicated as an effective and safe method to suppress plant disease. The aim of this study is to evaluate the postharvest disease control ability of Bacillus cereus AR156 and explore the response of strawberry fruit to this biocontrol microorganism. Bacillus cereus AR156 treatment significantly suppressed gray mold disease and postponed the strawberry senescence during storage. The bacterium pretreatment remarkably enhanced the reactive oxygen-scavenging and defense-related activities of enzymes. The promotion on the expression of the encoding-genes was confirmed by quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR) that significantly increased the expression of the marker genes of salicylic acid (SA) signaling pathway, such as PR1 , PR2 , and PR5 , instead of that of the jasmonic acid (JA)/ethylene (ET) pathway, which was also shown. Moreover, through transcriptome profiling, about 6,781 differentially expressed genes (DEGS) in strawberry upon AR156 treatment were identified. The gene ontology (GO) classification and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway enrichment indicated that AR156 altered the transcription of numerous transcription factors and genes involved in the SA-related plant disease resistance, metabolism, and biosynthesis of benzoxazinoids and flavonoids. This study offered a non-antagonistic Bacillus as a method for postharvest strawberry storage and disease control, and further revealed that the biocontrol effects were arisen from the induction of host responses on the transcription level and subsequent resistance-related substance accumulation.

Abstract:Gray mold (Botrytis cinerea) is a serious disease causing considerable losses to harvested tomato during storage and transportation. Extensive and unjudicial use of fungicides have certain deleterious effects such as evolved resistance in pathogen and environmental pollution. The ice cold chain transportation is the most commonly used method, but the results are not satisfactory. Currently, the trend is shifting towards prevention and control measures which ensures environmental protection, therefore, the biological control of postharvest diseases has become a hot spot. In this study, Bacillus subtilis L1-21 was used to control gray mold on tomato fruits, by adopting plate confrontation and fruit acupuncture method. To evaluate the preservative effect of biocontrol agent L1-21 on tomato, the gfp-tagged L1-21 was used to study colonization potential in harvested tomatoes assay. Colonization of L1-21-gfp in postharvest tomatoes was stable at 103 cfu/g by soaking and fluorescence method. Whereas Inhibition rate of B. cinerea was 39.63±4.73% in plate confrontation. Culture suspension of L1-21 at a concentration of 108 cfu/ml displayed best control effect: 86.57%±2.55% against tomato gray mold. In addition, different components exhibited different results such as cell pellet+saline (72.94%±8.49%), supernatant (41.18%±16.22%), sterilized culture (28.56%±6.54%). Further, suspension of B. cinerea and Bacillus L1-21 injected in tested tomatoes led to maximum control effect (81.40%±2.74%) after 4 h. Injection of L1-21 culture into tomato followed by pathogen B. cinerea spore solution resulted in 100%±0% control effect after 48 h. There was no significant difference in fruit quality between treated and untreated tomatoes. Taken together, B. subtilis L1-21 may lay theoretical foundation to be used in prevention of gray mold and other postharvest diseases during storage time.

To formulate an effective and environment friendly management strategy for postharvest gray mold, an endophytic bacterial strain ZL3 with excellent antifungal activity was screened by using dual culture method. Strain ZL3 was identified as Pseudomonas chlororaphis based on 16S rRNA and gyrB gene sequence analysis. The maximum percent of mycelial growth inhibition (PGI) of VOCs to B. cinerea was up to 97.23% under the antifungal conditions (temperature of 31.96 °C, pH of 6.74 and glucose of 25.96 g/L) optimized by using Box-Behnken Design (BBD) of response surface method (RSM). The biological efficiency of VOCs was performed on cherry fruit at 0 °C for 21 d and 25 °C for 7 d. At 25 °C and 0 °C, the disease incidence reduced to 31.67% and 21.67%, whereas the lesion diameter decreased to 0.60 cm and 0.32 cm, respectively. Additionally, twenty-three VOCs, including 6 alkanes, 4 aldehydes and ketones, 4 alcohols, 4 alkenes, 3 acids & esters, 1 aromatic compound, and 1 sulfur compound, were detected by gas chromatograph-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). It is noticed that most VOCs, except for 1, 10-undecadiene and 1-dodecene, demonstrated significant differences among different collection time. The results of this work suggested that strain ZL3 could be used as a promising biocontrol agent to control postharvest gray mold on Chinese cherry.

Abstract:Post-harvest diseases of raspberries affect their storage and subsequently the ability to provide consumers with fresh products. The antifungal activity of microbial volatile organic compounds (MVOCs) against both pre and postharvest diseases has previously been demonstrated, but the control of raspberry postharvest diseases caused by Botrytis cinerea and Rhizopus stolonifer using MVOCs has not been extensively studied. We have thus investigated the effects of Bacillus siamensis G-3 volatile organic compounds (VOCs) on controlling the diseases caused by B. cinerea and R. stolonifer. Bioassays of the VOCs of B. siamensis G-3 exhibited significant control effects (89.4%) on the two pathogens. The VOCs composition was studied with solid phase micro extraction and GC/mass spectrometry (SPME-GC-MS), and 22 VOCs, different from the controls, were identified. Among these compounds, only 2, 6-di-tert-butyl-4-methylphenol (BHT), and 2,4-di-tert-butylphenol (2,4-DTBP) had significant control effects on the pathogens (*P < 0.05), 52.38 and 93.33%, respectively, compared with the controls in vivo. With the 2,4-DTBP treatments, the raspberries could be stored for 20 d at 0 degrees C, with the disease rate maintained at similar to 10%. In addition, we have reported for the first time, that 2,4-DTBP may be a better preservative than BHT and could be used as a bio-fumigant for controlling raspberry postharvest diseases caused by B. cinerea and R. stolonifer in vivo.
Biocontrol of Botrytis Cinerea in Apple Fruit by Cryptococcus Laurentii and Indole-3-Acetic Acid

Abstract:This study evaluated the effect of a yeast antagonist Cryptococcus laurentii and a plant regulator indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) on inhibition of Botrytis cinerea infection in harvested apple fruit. The results showed that the combined treatment with C. laurentii and IAA at 20μg/ml was a more effective approach to reduce the gray mold rot in apple wounds than the C. laurentii alone. After 4 days of incubation, gray mold incidence in the combined treatment with C. laurentii and IAA was about 18%, which was a 50% reduction in incidence compared to the treatment with C. laurentii alone. Although IAA had no direct antifungal activity against B. cinerea infection when the time interval between IAA treatment and pathogen inoculation was within 2h, application of IAA strongly reduced gray mold infection when IAA was applied 24h prior to inoculation with B. cinerea in apple fruit wounds. Moreover, combination of IAA and C. laurentii stimulated the activities of superoxide dismutase, catalase and peroxidase with above 1.5-fold higher than that treatment with C. laurentii alone at 48h. Therefore, combination of C. laurentii with IAA, which integrated the dual biological activity from the antagonistic yeast and plant regulator, might be developed to be a useful approach to control gray mold in harvested apple fruit.
Reciprocal inhibition of autophagy and Botrytis cinerea-induced programmed cell death in 'Shine Muscat' grapes

Abstract:Botrytis cinerea causes gray mold, decreasing the quality of table grapes. The berry response to B. cinerea infection was explored in present study, focusing on the relationship between presence of autophagy and programmed cell death (PCD). Results demonstrated B. cinerea infection decreased cell viability, triggering cell death, possibly resulting in PCD occurrence. It was further verified by increased terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase dUTP nick-end labeling (TUNEL)-positive nuclei, heightened caspase 3-like and caspase 9-like protease activity, and elevated expression of metacaspase genes. Additionally, autophagy was indicated by the increased VvATG expression and autophagosome formation. Notably, the autophagy activator rapamycin reduced TUNEL-positive nuclei, whereas the autophagy inhibitor 3-methyladenine increased caspase 9-like protease activity. The PCD activator C2-ceramide inhibited autophagy, whereas the PCD inhibitor Acetyl-Asp-Glu-Val-Asp-aldehyde (Ac-DEVD-CHO) enhanced autophagy gene expression. Autophagy and B. cinerea-induced PCD in berry cells are reciprocally negatively regulated; and the rapamycin and Ac-DEVD-CHO could potentially maintain table grape edible quality.
Antifungal Activities of L-Methionine and L-Arginine Treatment In Vitro and In Vivo against Botrytis cinerea

Abstract:Gray mold caused by Botrytis cinerea is a common postharvest fungal disease in fruit and vegetables. The prevention and treatment of postharvest gray mold has been one of the hot research issues addressed by researchers. This study aimed to investigate the effect of L-methionine and L-arginine on Botrytis cinerea in vitro and on cherry tomato fruit. The results of the in vitro experiment showed that L-methionine and L-arginine had significant inhibitory effects on the mycelial growth and spore germination of Botrytis cinerea, and the inhibitory effects were enhanced with increasing L-methionine or L-arginine concentration. In addition, L-methionine and L-arginine treatment increased the leakage of Botrytis cinerea electrolytes, proteins and nucleic acids. The experiment involving propidium iodide staining and malondialdehyde content assay also confirmed that L-methionine and L-arginine treatment could lead to cell membrane rupture and lipid peroxidation. The results of scanning electron microscopy further verified that the morphology of hyphae was damaged, deformed, dented and wrinkled after treatment with L-methionine or L-arginine. Fruit inoculation experiments displayed that L-methionine and L-arginine treatments significantly inhibited the occurrence and development of gray mold in postharvest cherry tomato. Therefore, treatment with L-methionine or L-arginine might be an effective means to control postharvest gray mold in fruit and vegetables.
