Abstract:To realize low-cost green backfill mining, this paper proposes a novel model of aeolian sand-cement-modified gasification slag-paste backfill (ACGPB). This model realizes the safe disposal and resource utilization of hazardous solid wastes. A comprehensive experiment (including slump test, uniaxial compressive strength tests, microscopic test, and leaching toxicity tests) was conducted to explore how the mechanism of ACGPB depends on activator type and dosage. The results showed that fresh ACGPB slurry can be expressed by the Herschel-Bulkley model (R2 ≥ 0.965 in all recipes). With Na2SO4 as activator type, the yield stress, apparent viscosity, thixotropy, and slump of ACGPB slurry increased with increasing activator dosage. With CaO as activator type, the yield stress, apparent viscosity, thixotropy, and slump of ACGPB slurry fluctuated with increasing activator dosage. The mechanical properties of all recipes (not including Control group and C-C1) met the mechanical requirement (3 d ≥ 0.5 MPa and 28 d ≥ 1.0 MPa). In addition, the concentrations of all heavy metals remained within the range specified by the national standard. Specifically, the activator exerted a positive effect on the stabilization/solidification of heavy metal ions (Cu, Cd, Ba, Ni, Cr, Se, and As). Finally, FTIR, TG-DTG, SEM, and hydration heat were used to analyze the microstructure of ACGPB. The research results provide a creative way for the resource utilization of solid waste.

Abstract:Cemented Paste Backfill (CPB) technology is considered as an effective method to solve the serious problems caused by the solid wastes' accumulation, and to mitigate the risk of mined-out areas. However, the serious influence on the environment and higher pro-treating costs of solid wastes limits their application in CPB. Meanwhile, due to the high carbon emissions and high costs of Portland cement, its use as a binder in CPB is also limited. This paper used raw phosphogypsum (PG) as filler. Yellow phosphorus slag (YPS), fly ash (FA), steel slag (SS), and Portland cement were mixed to make a composite binder. Solid wastes addition was ranged from 80% to 98%. The feasibility of CPB co-preparation with a high percentage of multi-source industrial solid waste was verified by analyzing the performance and environmental impact of CPB produced with different percentages of solid wastes. The results showed that a higher PG addition was harmful to the property of CPB, leading to a lower fluidity, longer setting time, and weaken strength. However, the development and use of composite binder offset those negative aspects effectively. Composite binder is a CaO-rich binder that provides an alkaline environment for hydration reactions which enhanced CPB strength. Because its unconfined compressive strength reached to 3.1 MPa ∼ 19.5 MPa after 60 d's curing. This will provide a highly strengthen support to the mine to be filled with CPB, thus hindering its re-collapse. The gradually increased hydration products observed from the microstructural characterization further corroborated the strength development path of the CPB. Moreover, the adsorption and precipitation process in the alkaline system contributed to the stabilization of the contaminants from those solid wastes. Therefore, the CPB technology based on the multi-source industrial solid waste is considered as a green, promising, and cost-saving choice on supporting safe mining and mitigating environmental pollution.

Abstract:The substantial arsenic (As) content present in arsenic-containing bio-leaching residue (ABR) presents noteworthy environmental challenges attributable to its inherent instability and susceptibility to leaching. Given its elevated calcium sulfate content, ABR exhibits considerable promise for industrial applications. This study delved into the feasibility of utilizing ABR as a source of sulfates for producing super sulfated cement (SSC), offering an innovative binder for cemented paste backfill (CPB). Thermal treatment at varying temperatures of 150, 350, 600, and 800°C was employed to modify ABR's performance. The investigation encompassed the examination of phase transformations and alterations in the chemical composition of As within ABR. Subsequently, the hydration characteristics of SSC utilizing ABR, with or without thermal treatment, were studied, encompassing reaction kinetics, setting time, strength development, and microstructure. The findings revealed that thermal treatment changed the calcium sulfate structure in ABR, consequently impacting the resultant sample performance. Notably, calcination at 600°C demonstrated optimal modification effects on both early and long-term strength attributes. This enhanced performance can be attributed to the augmented formation of reaction products and a densified microstructure. Furthermore, the thermal treatment elicited modifications in the chemical As fractions within ABR, with limited impact on the As immobilization capacity of the prepared binders.

Abstract:To solve the disposal problems of carbide slag (CS), soda residue (SR), and red mud (RM) solid wastes, a new type of cemented paste backfill (CPB) was prepared with CS, SR, and RM solid wastes. The mixing proportion for the CPB was optimized by combining the Box‒Behnken design (BBD) response surface method and the satisfaction function method. The strength formation mechanism for the CPB was analyzed with physical and mechanical property tests, X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), etc. The safety of the CPB was evaluated with heavy metal leaching testing. The results showed that the 28-day unconfined compressive strength (UCS) of CPB first increased and then decreased with increasing CS/RM (0.2 ~ 0.6) and SR/RM (0.2 ~ 0.6); the optimum mixing ratios were CS/RM = 0.45 and SR/RM = 0.37, and the solid mass concentration was 64.75%; dense calcium silicate (aluminum) hydrate (C-S–H/C-A-S–H) bound to the solid particles of red mud and filled pores to provide early strength for the CPB, laminar interwoven Friedel's salt (Fs), ettringite and portlandite hydration products provided late strength for the CPB; and the leaching concentrations of five heavy metals (Fe, Mn, Cu, Zn, and Cr) in the solidified CPB were greatly reduced and far below the leaching limits specified in China's Quality Standard for Groundwater (GB/T 14848–2017).

Abstract:Solidification/stabilization (S/S) is a low-cost and efficient method for enhancing the mechanical properties of gold ore tailings powder (GTP) and decontaminating tailings. However, the traditional cement-based stabilization method is associated with environmental pollution and questionable sustainability. In this study, industrial waste residue was mixed with alkaline activators to prepare a sustainable waste-based composite geopolymer (WCG) to stabilize the GTP. Considering the cost of the novel geopolymer and the economic constraints of mining enterprises, a ratio of 5% geopolymer and 95% GTP was selected. The hydration mechanism, microstructure, mechanical properties, and leaching characteristics were analyzed after curing periods of 3, 7, 14, 28, and 90 days (d). The tests included phase structure analysis via x-ray diffraction analysis, thermogravimetric analysis and unconfined compression strength tests to evaluate the hydration products and strength of the stabilized GTP. The results showed that the increase in amorphous/unidentified content was not obvious after 28 d of curing and that the stabilized tailings with the same content of WCG had higher mechanical strength than those stabilized with ordinary Portland cement (32.5 MPa). Scanning electron microscope-energy dispersive spectroscopy and nitrogen adsorption tests were used to characterize the microstructure of the stabilized materials. These results indicate that the formation of C-(A)-S-H gels contributed to improvement in the degree of compaction of the stabilized samples. The immobilization mechanism of arsenic included precipitation, physical encapsulation, adsorption, and ion substitution. The stabilized materials had a dual-pore fabric characterized by interaggregate and intra-aggregate pores. The properties of the leaching solution, including the pH, electrical conductivity, oxidation-reduction potential, and heavy metal ion leaching concentrations, were determined to evaluate the leaching performance of the stabilized GTP. The relationship between the chemical properties of the leaching solution and the concentration of the leaching ions was analyzed to explain the immobilization mechanism of harmful elements. All harmful elements were well immobilized after 7 d of curing, and the leaching concentration remained constant over a longer curing time. This study provides a reference for the sustainable management of GTP and for improving the stabilization of tailings dams.

Abstract:Cement production may involve excessive use of natural resources and have negative environmental impacts, as energy consumption and CO2 emissions can cause air pollution and climate change. Cement kiln dust (CKD), a by-product waste material, is also a primary issue associated with cement production. Utilizing CKD in mining applications is a pathway to eco-sustainable solutions. Cemented paste backfill (CPB) made with mine tailings is an efficient method for void backfilling in underground mines. Therefore, this study investigated the eco-sustainable utilization of CKD as a co-binder material that can partially replace cement in CPB prepared with copper tailings. At 7, 14, 28, 56, and 90-day curing times, the experimental campaign measured the physical and mechanical parameters of the cured CPB samples, including density, UCS, and elastic modulus (stiffness). Additionally, the CPB-cured mixes were analyzed using XRF, X-ray XRD, SEM, and EDX techniques to link the mineral phases and microstructure to mechanical performance. Four proportions (5, 10, 15, and 20%) of CKD represented in 75 samples were prepared to replace ordinary Portland cement (OPC) in the CPB mixtures, in addition to the reference mix (control) with 0% CKD. As all combinations exceed the compressive strength of CPB required for achieving stability in underground mines, the results showed that CKD could be utilized advantageously as a partial substitute for OPC with a proportion of up to 20% in the CPB mixture. When tested after 90 days, the combination modified with 5% CKD exhibited comparatively higher compressive strength than the control mixture.

Abstract:The complex environment of mine water is closely linked to the effect of the backfill body. The goal of this study was to establish a method with which to reduce carbon emissions from cementitious materials while addressing the large amount of unutilized solid waste, such as oil shale residue, which lies on the surface of the planet, and pollutes the environment. Oil shale residue, fly ash, slag and coal gangue were used to produce an oil shale residue-based all-solid waste paste backfill (OSGPB) to study the changes in strength and environmental impact with corrosion time under acid mine drainage conditions. The development of cracks was monitored using digital image correlation (DIC) technology. The corrosion mechanism of OSGPB was analysed using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). This study revealed that in an acid mine drainage environment, the unconfined compressive strength (UCS) decreased by 38.58% and 15.66% after 24 d of wetdry cycling and complete immersion corrosion, respectively. A significant quantity of corrosive gypsum was produced in the OSGPB, which expanded the internal micropores and gradually formed cracks. This led to more severe internal structural damage during wetdry cycles. Changes in the UCS of the OSGPB over 60 d were predicted using established grey models. The leached concentrations of heavy metal ions met the groundwater quality standard (class III) after the OSGPB was completely immersed in acid mine drainage and subjected to wetdry corrosion cycles. OSGPB showed great potential as a green backfilling material for mines.

Abstract:Cemented paste backfill (CPB) is one of the effective means to disposal of mine tailings. During CPB process, ordinary Portland cement (OPC) is the most commonly used cementitious materials. The high price of OPC increases CPB cost. In the present work, a new binder was prepared using illite-containing mine tailings (IT) and steel slag (SS) after thermal treatment as supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs), which were then used in CPB. OPC was replaced by 30 wt%. The phase assembles of binders hydration products with different calcined IT (CIT), and SS (CSS) ratios were investigated via X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetry (TG), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis. After that, properties of CPB samples were then characterized, including the flowability, setting time, compressive strength, and pore structure. The results showed that sample CIT10-CSS20 showed superior performance, which was comparable to OPC-based samples. Furthermore, the cost of binders was calculated using a mass-based analysis, and the results show that sample CIT10-CSS20 was cheaper than OPC. Heavy metals leaching concentration from this sample fulfilled the regulation limit.

Abstract:Industrial waste residues are increasingly reutilized in the preparation of cemented paste backfill for reducing the cost of mine filling. Therefore, to promote the utilization of the bulk industrial waste residues (IWRs), mechanical and microstructure properties of cemented ultrafine tailings backfill (CUFTB) manufactured by reutilizing 5–10 wt% steel slag (SS), 5–10 wt% fly ash (FA), 16–22 wt% carbide slag (CS), 0–3 wt% desulfuration gypsum (DG), and 40–74 wt% blast furnace slag (BFS) and ultrafine tailing ( d 50 = 10.84 μm) were investigated after curing of 1-, 3-, 7-, 14-, 28-, 56- days. Unconfined compressive strength (UCS) test was adopted to determine strength and the regression analysis was applied to establish UCS prediction model. XRD, SEM, and MIP were used to evaluate the evolution characteristics of CUFTB microstructure. The obtained results indicate that the cementitious material synthetized by IWRs can completely substitute Portland Cement (PC) for CUFTB. After curing of 28 days, CUFTB exhibit UCS values with increasing of 10.80% ∼ 44.89% than those made of PC. Logarithmic function UCS=α⋅lnt+β is constructed to characterize UCS development with curing time. By optimizing the hyperparameters of Gaussian process regression (GPR) using Genetic algorithm (GA), GA-GPR model is established with high accuracy for predicting UCS. Microscopic analysis reveals that under the alkaline environment, the hydration reaction of SS, FA, BFS occurred to generate calcite (CaCO 3 ), ettringite (AFt) and hydrate calcium silicate gel with a low Ca/Si ratio. Microtopography formed with more refined pore distribution of 0.003- and 1- μm inside CUFTB. To substitute PC using the cementitious material synthesized by IWRs can reduce the mining cost and CO 2 emission. The findings provide the guidance for the synthesis of sustainable filling material by reutilizing IWRs.

Abstract:Cemented paste backfill (CPB) is used as a support and filler material in underground mines. In underground conditions, before mine closure and flooding, surface and groundwaters with variable quality are in contact with CPB material, which may result in the leaching of harmful substances from the CPB. In this study, we used actual mine water from a gold mine to flush CPB in a laboratory test to simulate underground conditions and the environmental influence of CPB on groundwaters more realistically than before. Different CPB materials were treated with mine water in columns for nine months. The columns were drained and filled with new mine water batches four times during the experiment to simulate intermittent flushing underground. The dissolved elemental content, major cations, pH and oxidation-reduction potential (ORP) of the waters were measured, and the chemical results were analysed by performing geochemical modelling with the widely used geochemical code PHREEQC. X-ray tomography was also used to examine the internal structure of the CPB specimens. The results demonstrated that calcium and sulphate present in CPB parent materials leached into the mine water, which might cause a deterioration of CPB. In contrast, the concentrations of dissolved As, Sb and Ni decreased in the mine water when it was in contact with CPB materials. However, arsenic started to be re-released from the materials at the end of the nine-month experimental period. The geochemical modelling suggests that the removal of metals/metalloids from the mine water was driven by the surface complexation reactions on originally present and/or freshly precipitated metal (hydr)oxide minerals. A longer and modified testing period is needed to thoroughly examine the conditions under which these adsorbed elements start to release over time.

Abstract:Phosphogypsum (PG) cementitious paste backfill (CPB) was prepared by using PG and fly ash (FA) as the main raw materials, red mud (RM) as the alkaline activator, Portland cement (OPC) as the binder, and silica fume (SF) as the additive, and its properties were investigated to achieve the objective of “treating harm with waste.” The results showed that the addition of OPC facilitated the flowability of the slurry, while the addition of RM and SF had the opposite effect. The slurry presented ideal flowability when the water/binder ratio was 0.2 and the superplasticizer (SP) content was 0.7%. The mechanical properties and water resistance were improved significantly with increasing OPC, RM, and SF doping. The strength of the CPB material exceeded 22 MPa after curing at room temperature for 28 days, which met the mine filling requirements. Changes in the ion concentrations of the solution were first monitored during immersion. The dissolution rules of Ca2+ and SO42− at different immersion ages confirmed that RM promoted the continuous hydration of CPB, which was the key to improve water resistance. Microstructural analysis showed that the main hydration products were AFt and C-S-H, which played an important role in the strength development of the material. The leaching results demonstrated that the metal ion content satisfied the requirements of the III categories of Chinese environmental standards (GB/T 14848-2017), indicating that the technology is a reliable and environmentally friendly technology for PG, FA, and RM recovery that can simultaneously support safe mining.

Abstract:Abstract The influence of shear flow on the structure of concentrated aqueous poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) solutions near the lower critical solution temperature was investigated by means of small-angle neutron scattering. Two samples, both in the semi-dilute regime above the overlap concentration, were studied. The scattering curve of the less concentrated sample was not influenced by shear flow, although high shear rates were reached. The more concentrated 4 wt.-% sample, however, displayed shear-induced demixing under strong shear flow conditions. Experiments at different shear stresses indicated the existence of a threshold shear stress and the phase separation process became faster with increasing stress. The two-dimensional scattering patterns remained isotropic even during the phase separation process and the correlation length as obtained from an Ornstein- Zernike plot increased. The influence of shear flow on the phase separation process is thus similar to a temperature increase. The results are in excellent agreement with data from recent rheo-optical experiments where shear-induced phase separation was also observed for the concentrated solution at high shear rates. Apparently, strong shear flow exerts an effect analogous to a temperature increase.
Effect of construction and demolition waste on the long-term geo-environmental behaviour of cemented paste backfill

Abstract:The construction and demolition waste (CDW) could be used as backfill material to fill the voids created during the ore production in underground mining. However, there is a need to clarify the impact of CDW on groundwater pollution when it is used as backfill material in cemented paste backfill (CPB) of sulphide-rich tailings (S-rT). This study presents the influence of CDW on the long-term geo-environmental behaviour of CPB samples (CPBs) when used as replacement (10 wt.%) to S-rT. For this reason, the dynamic-tank leaching test was conducted on CPBs and pH, conductivity (Ec), sulphate (SO42−) and heavy metals (HMs) analyses were executed for leachates over 30–360 days of leaching period. The effects of mineralogy and microstructure on the geo-environmental behaviour of CPBs were also analysed via X-ray fluorescence (XRD) and mercury intrusion porosimeter (MIP). The utilisation of CDW in CPB mixtures was found to reduce the SO42− release (up to 13.89%), neutralise the acid generated and lower the Ec (up to 22.16%). Furthermore, the HMs releases (except As, Cu and Zn) were prevented (Ni and Cr) or reduced up to 92%, which is compatible with the improved CPB microstructure. Only the release of arsenic (As) exceeded the limit value for groundwater in CPB of CDW leachate. These findings suggest that not only the cost, strength and stability but also the impact on groundwater pollution should be considered when disposing of CDW as CPB material in underground voids.

Experimental Investigation on Red Mud from the Bayer Process for Cemented Paste Backfill

Abstract:Red mud is a by-product of alumina production, and its disposal can have severe environmental consequences. This study experimentally investigates the feasibility of using red mud from the Bayer process for cemented paste backfill (CPB). Different binders and activators were used to improve the mechanical properties, water resistance, and environmental behaviors of red mud-based CPB. In addition, water immersion tests were introduced, for the first time, to evaluate the water resistance of CPB. Furthermore, the environmental behaviors of red mud-based CPB were investigated by conducting leaching experiments. The results showed that the red-mud specimens had an unconfined compressive strength (UCS) of less than 0.2 MPa and disintegrated after being immersed in water. Different binders significantly improved the mechanical properties of red mud-based CPB. In addition, the specimens with different binders showed excellent water resistance, and the softening coefficient of CPB with different binders could exceed 0.7 after being cured for 28 days. The binders exhibited a substantial inhibitory effect on the leaching of hazardous substances in red mud under the solidification and stabilization effects. The leaching concentration of hexavalent chromium, selenium, fluoride, arsenic, lead, and vanadium was reduced by more than 70%. Therefore, this study provides an effective method for the environmental-friendly and large-scale utilization of red mud from the Bayer process.

Abstract:Flocculent is commonly used in mining activities to improve the concentration of tailing slurry by enhancing the sedimentation process of small tailings particles. The presence of flocculent in thickened tailings is unavoidable, and it affects the heavy metal leaching performances and mechanical and rheological characteristics of tailing-based cemented paste backfill (CPB). This study is carried out to investigate the physicochemical and leachability of CPB amended with flocculants and lime-activated ground granulated blast-furnace slag (GGBS). The stabilized samples were subjected to a series of model tests, including toxicity characteristics leaching procedure (TCLP) and pH, unconfined compressive strength (UCS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray diffraction. Moreover, the CPB amended with anionic polyacrylamide (APAM) demonstrated better performance in terms of a decrease in heavy metal leachability besides higher mechanical strength than poly aluminum chloride (PAC) and poly ferric chloride (PFC) samples. Furthermore, the UCS results showed that increasing binder content up to 15% negatively influences strength improvement of all stabilized samples because of weak connections between soil particles and cementitious material, resulting in high leachability of heavy metals. The analysis of XRD and SEM showed that anionic polyacrylamide (APAM) cases exhibited more voluminous hydration products, resulting in a compact stabilized matrix and substantially reduced heavy metal leachability.

Abstract:To investigate the issues related to significant environmental damage and poor resource utilization of soda residue (SR), the composition and microstructure of hydration products of the GGBS (ground granulated blast-furnace slag) synergistically activated by NaOH-SR are characterized by an X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectrometry (FTIR), thermogravimetric–differential thermogravimetric (TG-DTG) analysis, and scanning electron microscope X-ray energy dispersive spectrometry (SEM-EDS). The effect of SR proportion, activator dosage, and water-to-binder ratio on the hydration process is studied. Results indicate that the hydration products mainly include hydrated calcium chloroaluminate (3CaO·Al2O3·CaCl2·10H2O, FS), hydrated calcium aluminosilicate {Ca2Al3(SiO4)3OH, C-A-S-H), halite (NaCl), calcite (CaCO3), and C-S-H gel. With the increase in SR proportion (especially from 80% to 90%), the C-S-H gel yield decreases significantly, while the FS yield rapidly increases, and the T-O-Si (T = Al or Si) peak shifts to a higher wavenumber range (955 cm−1 to 975 cm−1). With the decrease in activator dosage (40% to 15%), the hydration reaction gradually weakens, and the FTIR band of the T-O-Si (T = Al or Si) shifts to the lower wavenumber range (968 cm−1 to 955 cm−1). Then, cemented paste backfills (CPBs) are prepared with iron tailings as the aggregate. At mass content of 75%, SR proportion of 80%, and activator dosage of 30%, the fluidity of the CPB reaches 267.5 mm with a 28-day unconfined compressive strength (UCS) of 2.4 MPa, confirming that SR- and NaOH-synergistically-activated GGBS has great application prospects in backfill mining.

Abstract:This study proposes a novel idea of the use of coal gangue (CG) activation and preheated decarburized activated coal CG-based cemented paste backfill material (PCCPB) to realize green mining. PCCPB was prepared with preheated decarburized coal CG (PCG), FA, activator, low-dose cement, and water. This idea realized scale disposal and resource utilization of coal CG solid waste. Decarbonization and activation of CG crushed the material to less than 8 mm by preheated combustion technology at a combustion temperature of 900 °C and a decarbonization activation time of 4 min. The mechanism of the effect of different Na2SO4 dosages on the performance of PCCPB was investigated using comprehensive tests (including mechanical property tests, microscopic tests, and leaching toxicity tests). The results show that the uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) of C-S2, C-S3, and C-S4 can meet the requirements of backfill mining, among which the UCS of C-S3 with a curing time of 3 d and 28 d were 0.545 MPa and 4.312 MPa, respectively. Na2SO4 excites PCCPB at different curing time, and the UCS of PCCPB increases and then decreases with the increase in Na2SO4 dosage, and 3% of Na2SO4 had the best excitation effect on the late strength (28 d) of PCCPB. All groups' (control and CS1-CS4 groups) leachate heavy metal ions met the requirements of groundwater class III standard, and PCCPB had a positive effect on the stabilization/coagulation of heavy metal ions (Mn, Zn, As, Cd, Hg, Pb, Cr, Ba, Se, Mo, and Co). Finally, the microstructure of PCCPB was analyzed using FTIR, TG/DTG, XRD, and SEM. The research is of great significance to promote the resource utilization of coal CG residual carbon and realize the sustainable consumption of coal CG activation on a large scale.

Abstract:As more and more mines utilize the cemented paste backfill (CPB) mining method, the demand for reducing backfill cost and carbon footprint is increasing and becoming more critical. In this work, a new backfill gel binder made with 40 wt.% of low-quality Class F fly ash (FCM) is proposed to replace ordinary Portland cement (OPC). The binder hydration and gel hardening properties were experimentally investigated through X-ray diffraction, Mercury intrusion porosimetry, uniaxial compression, and thermogravimetric analysis. Three different mine tailings were used to verify the FCM's applicability. Results show that the strength performance of FCM-CPB is 72% of that of OPC-CPB, while FCM production cost is almost less than half of OPC. The hydration process of the FCM-CPB can be divided into five stages, and the main hydration products are ettringite and gel-like hydrates. The 31.2% porosity of FCM-CPB at 28-day curing is higher than that of 7-day curing, while the average pore size is lower, and the structure is denser. The FCM can meet the strength requirement of three different mine tailings regarding different subsequent filling and cut-and-fill mining methods. The proposed FCM provides a feasible alternative with economic and environmental benefits.

Abstract:Cemented paste backfill (CPB) allows environmental friendly management of potentially hazardous tailings generated from milling of nonferrous metal sulphide ores by placing such tailings into the underground mined-out openings. The components of CPB are tailings, water, and binders. These components significantly affect the physicomechanical, workability, and geotechnical properties of CPB. Ordinary Portland cement (OPC) is the commonly used binder for CPB operations. The effects of the tailings characteristics and OPC are extensively studied in the study area. The beneficial effect of the use of alkali-activated slags (AASs) on the mechanical and durability properties of CPB of sulphide-rich tailings has been recently reported. Therefore, this study especially focused on the effect of desliming of the tailings on the workability properties of sulphide-rich tailings CPB containing AAS besides hardened properties. In this scope, the water-retention capacities of full (FT) and deslimed tailings (DT) and the workability characteristics of CPB mixtures were studied. DT was found to decrease the water-retention capacity, leading to denser CPB mixtures. In addition, DT-AASs usage produced no adverse effect on the workability of fresh CPB materials. LSS-S (slag activated with liquid sodium silicate) improved the flowability of CPB mixtures owing to its dispersant effect. Desliming also modified the tailing properties by removing fine particles and improved the main geotechnical parameters of CPB.

Abstract:Solid waste cemented paste backfill (SWCPB) meets the needs of coal mining area management. SWCPB is a cementitious paste backfill material without added cement and is made only from oil shale residue (OSR), steel slag (SS), soda residue (SR) and water. In this study, mine water characteristics were simulated by combining dry-wet cycling experiments with sulphate erosion experiments. SWCPB was assessed regarding appearance, mass loss, and unconfined compressive strength (UCS), and the erosion products were microscopically analysed with X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). The mechanism for erosion of the SWCPB by sulphate-rich mine water was comprehensively analysed and revealed. Research showed that the erosion mechanism was divided into two parts: chemical and physical erosion. Low concentrations of sodium sulphate promoted hydration, thereby contributing to the increased mass and strength of SWCPB. At high sodium sulphate concentrations, the erosion mainly consumed Ca(OH)2 within the material, and the main generated erosion products were gypsum and ettringite (AFt). This was accompanied by the destructive effects of Na2SO4 crystal expansion, which resulted in damage and the reduced workability of the SWCPB. The whole erosion process was continuous, mainly due to transformations of pits, pores and cracks. The conclusions of this study may provide appropriate guidance for application of SWCPB materials in the treatment of coal mine backfills. In addition, the corresponding theoretical analysis of the erosion mechanism for SWCPB materials is provided.
