Abstract:Gaseous emissions from municipal solid waste (MSW) disposal plants pose serious odor pollution and health risks. In this study, the emission of volatile organic compounds and carbon disulfide was compared in the main processing units of three disposal methods, i.e., landfilling, eco-mechanical biological treatment (EMBT) and anaerobic fermentation in a MSW disposal plant. Among the detected volatile compounds (VCs), the top ten odor compounds were methanethiol, dimethyl sulfide, dimethyl disulfide, carbon disulfide, styrene, m-xylene, 4-ethyltoluene, ethylbenzene, 2-hexyl ketone and n-hexane in the MSW disposal plant. Sulfur compounds were the main source of odor at the majority of sampling sites, and aromatic compounds were the dominant odor substrates at the tipping unit and sorting system of EMBT, while 2-hexanone was the major odor substrate at the tipping unit (AT) and sorting system (AS) of anaerobic fermentation and the landfill working surface. At AS and AT, the lifetime cancer risk values for 1,2-dichloroethane and trichloroethylene exceeded the carcinogenic risk value (>1.0E-04), and the hazard index values of naphthalene, trichloroethylene and acrolein all exceeded the acceptable level (>1). Therefore, special attention should be paid to VC emissions from MSW disposal facilities, and protection measures should be adopted for on-site workers to minimize health risks.
Characteristic Pollutants and Microbial Community in Underlying Soils for Evaluating Landfill Leakage.

Abstract:Leachate leakage poses a serious environmental risk to the safety of surrounding soils and groundwater. A much faster approach to reflect landfill leakage is the premise to mitigate the ecological risk of landfills. In this study, two landfills (BJ and WZ) were selected to investigate the leaching characteristics of various pollutants along the vadose soil depths. The physiochemical properties of underlying soils including NO3--N, NO2--N, NH4+-N, OM, TN, EC and Cl- exhibited a typical leaching dynamic along the depths. Among them, TN, NH4+-N, OM, NO3--N, and EC might be used as characteristic pollutants to evaluate the leachate leakage issues in landfilled sites. The genera Thiopseudomonas, Acinetobacter, Pseudomonas, and Hydrogenispora dominated in underlying soils. Compared to BJ samples, a more diverse and active microbiome capable of carbon and nitrogen cycles was observed in WZ samples, which was mainly ascribed to nutrients and elements contained in different types of soils. Among the environmental factors, nitrogenous compounds, SO42-, pH and EC had significant effects on the microbial community structures in the underlying soils. The relative abundances of Hydrogenispora and Caldicoprobacter might be used as characteristic microorganisms to evaluate the leachate leakage issues in landfilled sites. These results provided a deep insight into effects of leachate leakage in underlying soils, especially the pollutants vertical distribution and the corresponding microbial community structures.
Field Investigation of Temporal Variation of Volatile Organic Compounds at a Landfill in Hangzhou, China

Abstract:Variation of volatile organic compound (VOC) concentration and composition in an active landfill were monitored by a developed static chamber for 2 years. The landfill gas from 82 sampling points including 70 points on working face, 8 points on geomembrane (GMB), and 4 points on final cover were analyzed for VOCs by GC-MS. Twenty-eight types of VOCs were detected, including terpenes, sulfur compounds, aromatics, hydrocarbon, oxygenated compounds, aldehyde compounds, and halogenated compounds. Terpenes were the dominant VOCs recorded in the spring, autumn, and winter seasons, whereas sulfur compounds dominated in the summer season. Limonene, ethyl alcohol, and acetone were identified as the main VOCs emitted from the waste working face of the landfill. Limonene dominated the terpenes with a maximum concentration of 43.29 μg m−3 in the autumn season. Limonene was also the dominant VOC escaping from the defects of geomembrane temporary cover reaching an average concentration 38 μg m−3. The defects of geomembranes can be a great emission source of VOCs. Emission rate of limonene was 2.24 times higher than that on the working face. VOC concentrations on the final cover can be 166 times less than those obtained on the working face. VOC emitted from the landfill did not represent a health threat for human health. However, concentrations of methyl mercaptan and ethanethiol on the working face were 3.4–22.8 times greater than their odor threshold, which were the main compounds responsible for odor nuisance. Results obtained from CALPUFF model indicated that methyl mercaptan and ethanethiol would not be a nuisance for the residents around the landfill. However, these compounds are harmful to the workers on the landfill.
Occupational health risks of VOCs emitted from the working face of municipal solid waste landfill: Temporal variation and influencing factors

Abstract:Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emission on the working face of a large sanitary landfill in northern China was characterized in a one-year long sampling campaign. A total of 67 VOCs with average annual concentration of 2903.01 μg/m 3 were detected. Ethanol was the dominant species of detected VOCs, accounting for 76.4–82.3% of the total volatile organic compounds (TVOCs) concentration. VOCs emission showed seasonal variation as the highest concentration was detected in summer and lowest appeared in winter. Furthermore, 50 VOCs identified were non-carcinogenic chemicals and 21 of them were carcinogenic chemicals. Risk assessment showed that the average total non-carcinogenic risk value (HI T ) was 4.95, which far exceeded the threshold value of 1; and the average total carcinogenic risk value (Risk T ) was 8.45 × 10 −5 , close to the limit of 1 × 10 −4 . That means both the non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks of long-term exposure to these VOCs could not be ignored. Some of the oxygenated compounds (Acrolein, Ethyl acetate, etc.), halocarbons (1,1,2-Trichloroethane, 1,2-Dichloropropane, etc.) and aromatic compounds (Naphthalene, m + p-Xylene, etc.) consisted the main contributors to non-carcinogenic risks. Meanwhile, carcinogenic risks were mainly caused by halocarbons ( cis -1,2-Dichloroethylene, FREON11, etc.) and aromatic compounds (Benzene, Ethylbenzene, etc.). In addition, statistical analysis revealed that the HI T values were related to the concentrations of risk aromatic compounds, halocarbons and hydrocarbons; Risk T values were only related to the concentrations of risk aromatic compounds and halocarbons. The research results provide an important theoretical basis for occupational risk management and VOCs emission prevention in landfills.

Abstract:Landfill sites are regarded as sources of volatile compounds (VOCs) and odors emitted to the atmosphere. Surface emissions of VOCs and odors were investigated in a rural domestic waste landfill site located in southwest China. A total of 76 chemical compounds belonging to 3 chemical families were identified and quantified. The total number of VOCs (TVOC) detected ranged from 18.1–806.3 mg/m3, while odorous gases and greenhouse gases ranged from 0.4–21.2 and 0–100.5 mg/m3, respectively. High emissions were found in the air surrounding the leachate storage pool (LSP) and dumping area (DPA). The dominant species of VOCs were hexaldehyde, m-xylene, propylene oxide, acetophenone, and 2-butanone. The traceability analysis showed that the odors and VOCs diffused to the downwind boundary mainly came from the DPA and LSP. According to the olfactory effect analysis and cancer risk assessment, the main odor-causing gaseous pollutants were hydrogen sulfide, propionic acid, styrene, and 2-pentanone, while benzene, trichlorethylene, and 1,3-butadiene were the dominant carcinogens. This study provides new insights into the emission characteristics, olfactory effects, and cancer risks of VOCs and odors emitted from rural domestic solid waste landfill sites.

Abstract:Volatile and semi-volatile organic compounds (VOCs and SVOCs) carried by landfilled wastes may enter leachate, and require appropriate treatment before discharge. However, the driving factors of the entry of VOCs and SOVCs into leachate, their removal characteristics during leachate treatment and the dominant factors remain unclear. A global survey of the VOCs and SOVCs in leachate from 103 landfill sites combined with 27 articles on leachate treatment was conducted to clarify the abovementioned question. The results showed that SVOCs such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), phthalate acid esters (PAEs) and phenols were the most frequently detected in leachate on a global scale. However, four kinds of VOCs, i.e., toluene, ethylbenzene, xylenes and benzene, were frequently detected at high concentrations in landfill leachate as well. The concentrations of VOCs and SVOCs in leachate ranged from 1 × 10° to 1 × 10 8 ng/L. Solubility was a key factor driving the entry of VOCs and SOVCs into leachate, and higher solubility enables higher detectable concentrations in leachate ( P <0.05). It was easiest to remove monocyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (MAHs) from leachate, followed by phenols and PAHs, and it was most difficult to remove PAEs. In terms of removing MAHs, the anoxic/oxic (A/O) process and the sequential batch reactor (SBR) process were comparable to the advanced oxidization process and far superior to the ultrafiltration and nanofiltration processes, and the removal rate increased with an increase in the Henry's constant and/or the hydrophilicity of the contaminants during the A/O and SBR processes ( P <0.05). There were no significant differences among biological, advanced oxidation and reverse osmosis processes in the removal of phenolic. In terms of removing PAHs, the A/O process was comparable to the advanced oxidization process and more efficient than the other treatment processes. As to removing PAEs, the membrane bioreactor process was almost the same efficient as the advanced oxidization process and far more efficient than the other biological treatment processes. Future research should focus on the pollution of atmospheric VOCs and SVOCs near aeration units in leachate treatment plants, as well as the health risk assessment of VOCs and SVOCs in the treated leachate effluent. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first review regarding the occurrence and removal of VOCs and SVOCs from landfill leachates worldwide.

Abstract:Gas emitted from landfills contains a large quantity of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs), some of which are carcinogenic, teratogenic, and mutagenic, thereby posing a serious threat to the health of landfill workers and nearby residents. However, the global hazards of VOCs and SVOCs in landfill gas to human health remain unclear. To quantify the global risk distributions of these pollutants, we collected the composition and concentration data of VOCs and SVOCs from 72 landfills in 20 countries from the core database of Web of Science and assessed their human health risks as well as analyzed their influencing factors. Organic compounds in landfill gas were found to primarily result from the biodegradation of natural organic waste or the emissions and volatilization of chemical products, with the concentration range of 1 × 10-1-1 × 106 μg/m3. The respiratory system, in particular, lung was the major target organ of VOCs and SVOCs, with additional adverse health impacts ranging from headache and allergies to lung cancer. Aromatic and halogenated compounds were the primary sources of health risk, while ethyl acetate and acetone from the biodegradation of natural organic waste also exceeded the acceptable levels for human health. Overall, VOCs and SVOCs affected residents within 1,000 m of landfills. Air temperature, relative humidity, air pressure, wind direction, and wind speed were the major factors that influenced the health risks of VOCs and SVOCs. Currently, landfill risk assessments of VOCs and SVOCs are primarily based on respiratory inhalation, with health risks due to other exposure routes remaining poorly elucidated. In addition, potential health risks due to the transport and transformation of landfill gas emitted into the atmosphere should be further studied.

Emission of volatile organic compounds from landfill working surfaces: Formation potential of ozone and secondary organic aerosols

Abstract:The working surface of landfills is an important source of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which have received increasing attention because of their role in potentially forming ozone and secondary organic aerosols (SOAs). In this study, 99 monitoring datasets on VOC emissions from a landfill working surface were obtained in 9 months and used to evaluate their ozone formation potential (OFP) and SOA formation potential (SOAFP) from a statistical perspective and compared using various methods. December was found to have the highest total OFP and SOAFP caused by VOC emissions from the landfill working surface. Both the propylene equivalent concentration (PEC) and maximum incremental reactivity (MIR) methods indicated that oxygenated compounds, especially ethanol, contributed the most to the OFP, accounting for 16.1 %–95.4 % and 44.9 %–98.6 % of the total OFP during the entire observation period, respectively. The fraction aerosol coefficient (FAC) method highlighted the effect of aromatic hydrocarbons which contributed to over 97 % of the total SOAFP. In contrast, the SOA potential (SOAP) method indicated that both aromatic hydrocarbons and oxygenated compounds play important roles, contributing 26.6 %–93.9 % and 21.6 %–73.4 % of the total SOAFP, respectively. Based on their mechanisms and comprehensiveness, PEC and SOAP methods are considered more appropriate for evaluating the OFP and SOAFP of VOCs released from landfill working surfaces. The annual total OFP and SOAFP of VOCs from landfill working surfaces of China in 2020 were thus estimated as 1.5 × 10 4 t and 135 t, respectively, with high variations among different regions along with the population, waste management system, and the amount of landfilled waste. This study provides a comprehensive understanding of the potential impacts and evaluation methods of local waste landfills in the atmospheric environment from a statistical perspective.

Abstract:Odor pollutants from a landfill can have serious impacts on the surrounding environment and nearby residents. Moreover, the variety and complexity of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) along with the landfill odor makes sampling and identifying compounds challenging. In this study, the authors monitored municipal solid waste (MSW)-related areas, sludge-related areas and waste coverage with the most malodorous compounds. In terms of all 120 VOCs, 67 malodorous VOCs with significant variations were categorized into six classes of compounds under all test conditions. Among the concentration characteristics, Site B concentrations were the highest. For the odor index (OI), the OI values of Site B were higher than those on other sites. The organic sulfides, organic acids and amine were the major malodorous pollutants emitted from landfill and influenced the residential area. Through a coefficient of divergence analysis, the CDjk values of Sites A (0.66) and B (0.69) were lower than others, indicating the effects of odor emission on the surrounding residential area were slightly more severe than on the other sites because of the meteorological condition during the study period. The results of this study can provide essential information to enhance understanding the actual odor emission intensity and characteristics of landfill and the migration, transportation and influence of odorant emissions on the working surface of the landfill.

Diffusion behavior and environmental impact of odorants and TVOCs detected in a wastewater treatment plant for collaborative leachate treatment in Northwest China

Abstract:Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are major sources of volatile gaseous compounds, especially in mixed-source systems such as domestic wastewater and landfill leachate. This study aimed to investigate the emission behavior and environmental impact of gaseous substances, such as hydrogen sulfide (H2S), ammonia (NH3), carbon sulfide (CS2), and phosphine (PH3), at a WWTP in Northwest China. Odorants were detected in the air surrounding the grid room (XGS), biochemical treatment tank (SHC), secondary sedimentation tank (ECC), and sludge dewatering room (NTS). For comparison, the upwind boundary (O-SF) and downwind boundaries (O-XF) monitoring points were used, with odor concentrations ranging from 3.95 to 725.27 odor units. The concentration ranges of the odorant substances were 5.27-88.69, 5.61-71.96, 5.70-32.63, and 0.12-5.87 mg/m3 for H2S, NH3, CS2, and PH3, respectively. Meteorological factors such as temperature, relative humidity, and wind speed and direction substantially influence odorant emissions. The concentrations of various odorants and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) detected at the O-XF monitoring point were higher than those detected at the O-SF monitoring point, indicating that the wind intensified their diffusion toward the downwind plant boundary. The average odor intensities of odorant substances emitted from wastewater or sludge treatment equipment were 3.37, 5.09, 4.42, 2.00, and 3.82 for total VOCs, H2S, NH3, CS2, and PH3, respectively. Among them four, with downwind diffusion, only H2S presented olfactory and chronic toxicity risks based on Gaussian plume model calculations. The hazard index ranking across monitoring sites was XGS > NTS > SHC > ECC > O-XF > O-SF. These findings emphasize the urgent need for effective measures to control and mitigate gaseous pollutants emitted by collaborative WWTPS, thereby protecting environmental quality and public health.
Abundance and cultivable bioaerosol transport from a municipal solid waste landfill area and its risks

Abstract:Municipal solid waste (MSW) landfills, constituting the third largest anthropogenic sources of bioaerosols, are suspected to be one of the major contributors to adverse health outcomes. A regional modeling of aerosol trajectories based on wind-tunnel observations and on-site monitoring was newly-developed to uncover the impacts of a typical MSW landfill on ambient bioaerosol pollution. Results showed that the horizontal diffusion velocity of bioaerosols reached 4.33 times higher than the vertical velocity under surface calm winds. On-site monitoring revealed that the concentrations of particulate matter (PM) with a diameter of 10 μm were 3.05 times higher than those of PM1.0 in the 2.8-km downwind residential regions near the MSW landfill. With the increase in PM concentration, higher-abundance microorganisms were detected. A number of cultivable bacterial species (Micrococcus endophyticus, Micrococcus flavus, Bacillus sporothermodurans, Salmonella entericaserovar typhi, Rhodococcus hoagie, Blastococcups) and fungal species (Aspergillus niger, Penicillium, Microascus cirrosus, Cochliobolus, Stemphylium vesicarium) were identified in these bioaerosols. Furthermore, distinguished by transmission electron microscopy, a longer-range transported microorganism (E. coli) clinging onto suspended PM was observed, signifying higher exposure risks. Human health risk assessments demonstrate that the residents and occupational workers in the vicinity of MSW landfill endured atmospheric diffusion-induced bioaerosol exposure risks due to open dumping activities in MSW landfill. This study clearly indicates bioaerosol pollution from landfills, and people particularly living nearby the MSW facilities, must decrease outdoor activities during dusty days.
VOCs Emission from a Final Landfill Cover System Induced by Ground Surface Air Temperature and Barometric Pressure Fluctuation.

Abstract:Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emission flux and their concentration profiles were measured at a final municipal solid waste (MSW) landfill cover in Hangzhou, China. The influencing parameters, especially ground surface air temperature and pressure were monitored concomitantly. Furthermore, a numerical model incorporating coupled thermo-hydro-chemical interaction to assess VOCs emission from this final landfill cover (LFC) system was developed and validated with the field test results. The tested total VOC emission flux from the final cover is 0.0124 μg/m2/s, which indicates that the total amount of VOCs emitted into the atmosphere is 391 mg/m2 annually. Among these, dichloromethane (DCM) dominated VOCs emission flux during May, comprising 51.8% of the total emission flux. The numerical simulation results indicated that the diffusive emission flux of VOCs varied consistently with the fluctuation of atmospheric temperature. Whereas, the advective flux varied inversely with the fluctuation of barometric pressure. The highest difference in diffusive emission flux induced by temperature variation is 183 μg/m2/day and occurred in spring. Moreover, the results demonstrated that the impact of atmospheric temperature and pressure fluctuation on the emission of VOC from final covers is non-negligible when reasonably assessing the risks of landfill and landfill gas emission budget.
Ammonia and hydrogen sulphide odour emissions from different areas of a landfill in Hangzhou, China

Abstract:This study examined the release characteristics of malodorous ammonia (NH 3 ) and hydrogen sulphide (H 2 S) gases in different areas of a full-capacity operational landfill in Hangzhou, China. Gas samples were collected using static boxes from exposed working areas (EWAs), temporarily covered areas (TCAs), and final closure areas (FCAs), and were analysed using spectrophotometric methods. Gas release increased in the following order: TCA > EWA > FCA. The average concentrations of released NH 3 in these areas were 2763, 1171, and 27 mg m −3 , respectively, and those of H 2 S were 2481, 631, and 10 mg m −3 , respectively. The concentrations of gases released from holes in the film in the temporarily covered and EWAs were significantly higher than the AEGL-3 level values specified by the Acute Exposure Guideline Levels (AEGL) Advisory Committee. EWAs were identified as key for odour control, where the highest NH 3 release was recorded at approximately 12:00. The diurnal variation in H 2 S release was insignificant ( p > 0.05). Therefore, the study shows that working in EWAs should be avoided at approximately noon. Adverse impacts on human health can be reduced by standardising procedures, using higher-quality films, and improving film installation procedures. The results of this study serve as a valuable reference for odour control in operational landfills.

Abstract:The assessment of the health risks of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted from landfills via dispersion model is crucial but also challenging because of remarkable variations in their emissions and meteorological conditions. This study used a probabilistic approach for the assessment of the health risks of typical VOCs by combining artificial neural network models for emission rates and a numerical dispersion model enhanced by probability analysis. A total of 8753 rounds of simulation were performed with distributions of waste compositions and the valid hourly meteorological conditions for 1 year. The concentration distributions and ranges of the typical health-risky VOCs after dispersion were analyzed with 95% probability. The individual and cumulative non-carcinogenic risks of the typical VOCs were acceptable with all values less than 1 in the whole study domain. For individual carcinogenic risks, only ethylbenzene, benzene, chloroform, and 1, 2-dichloroethane at extreme concentrations showed minor or moderate risks with a probability of 0.1%–1% and an impact distance of 650–3000 m at specific directions. The cumulative carcinogenic risks were also acceptable at 95% probability in the whole study domain, but exceeded 1 × 10−6 or even 1 × 10−4 at some extreme conditions, especially within the landfill area. The vertical patterns of the health risks with height initially increased, and then decreased rapidly, and the peak values were observed around the height of the emission source. The dispersion simulation and health risk assessment of the typical health-risky VOCs enhanced by Monte Carlo can accurately reflect their probabilistic dispersion patterns and health risks to surrounding residents from both spatial and temporal dimensions. With this approach, this study can provide important scientific basis and technical support for the health risk assessment and management of landfills.

Abstract:The impact of odorous gases emitted from refuse transfer stations has always been a concern raised by the surrounding residents. The emitted volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and odors were investigated in a rural solid waste transfer station (RSWTS) located in Southwest China. A total of 70 VOCs were identified and quantified. The total VOCs (TVOCs) concentrations varied from 848.38 to 31193.24 μg/m3. Inorganic odor and greenhouse gases concentrations ranged from 39.11 to 470.14 μg/m3 and 1.03-525.42 μg/m3, respectively. Oxygenated compounds contributed the most (58.25%) to the VOCs. Among the oxygenated compounds, ketones, esters, and ethers were the dominant categories, accounting for 67.5%, 12.70%, and 11.85%, respectively. The key odorants included propionaldehyde, hexanaldehyde, propionic acid, acetaldehyde, and disopropyl ether. N-nitrosodiethylamine, acrylonitrile, and 1,3-Butadiene were the three main carcinogens that pose considerable risk to human health. Allyl chloride was the most non-carcinogenic pathogen among the VOCs detected in RSWTS. With diffusion in the downwind direction, the concentration of VOCs decreased gradually, and their risks weakened accordingly. At the sampling site of RSWTS-10, located 100 m away from RSWTS, acrylonitrile and 1,3-Butadiene still presented an unacceptable carcinogenic risk to human health. This study provides new data for assessing the emission characteristics, olfactory effects, and health risks of trace VOCs, especially those released from RSWTS.

Abstract:Large amounts of bioaerosols are generated during the treatment of landfill leachate, which poses potential threat to public health safety. In this study, the concentrations, particle size distribution, and microbial community of bioaerosols emitted from the low-pH biofilter (LPB) and neutral-pH biofilter (NPB) used to treat the odors from landfill leachate, as well as the effect of the inlet flow rate (IFR) and water-containing rate (WCR) were investigated. The results showed that the removal efficiency of the LPB for heterotrophic bacteria and the NPB for fungi were higher when the IFR was higher. The outlet concentrations (OCs) of heterotrophic bacteria, neutral sulfur bacteria, ammonia-oxidizing bacteria, nitrite-oxidizing bacteria, NO2−, and NO3− were negatively correlated with the IFR in the LPB, whereas those of fungi and acidophilic sulfur bacteria were positively correlated with the IFR. Inverse correlation between the OCs and IFR was exhibited in the NPB. The proportions of dominant microorganisms with large particle size (> 3.3 μm) reduced significantly after both the LPB and NPB, which was aggravated under higher WCR. The analysis of microbial community illustrated that the dominant heterotrophic bacteria were different, while the dominant fungi were similar in the bioaerosols between the LPB and NPB, respectively. Due to the different emission characteristics, bioaerosols in the LPB and NPB outlet should be distinguished and taken seriously.

Abstract:Aromatic compounds (ACs) emitted from landfills have attracted a lot of attention of the public due to their adverse impacts on the environment and human health. This study assessed the health risk impacts of the fugitive ACs emitted from the working face of a municipal solid waste (MSW) landfill in China. The emission data was acquired by long-term in-situ samplings using a modified wind tunnel system. The uncertainty of aromatic emissions is determined by means of statistics and the emission factors were thus developed. Two scenarios, i.e. 'normal-case' and 'worst-case', were presented to evaluate the potential health risk in different weather conditions. For this typical large anaerobic landfill, toluene was the dominant species owing to its highest releasing rate (3.40±3.79g·m-2·d-1). Despite being of negligible non-carcinogenic risk, the ACs might bring carcinogenic risks to human in the nearby area. Ethylbenzene was the major health threat substance. The cumulative carcinogenic risk impact area is as far as ~1.5km at downwind direction for the normal-case scenario, and even nearly 4km for the worst-case scenario. Health risks of fugitive ACs emissions from active landfills should be concerned, especially for landfills which still receiving mixed MSW.
Quantitative microbial risk assessment with nasal/oral breathing pattern for S. aureus bioaerosol emission from aeration tanks and residual sludge storage yard in a wastewater treatment plant

Abstract:AbstractA large number of pathogenic bioaerosols are generated during the treatment process of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), and they can pose potential risks to human health. Therefore, this study systematically analyzed the emission characteristics of Staphylococcus aureus bioaerosols released from an inverted umbrella aeration tank, a microporous aeration tank, and a residual sludge storage yard in a WWTP, and quantitatively evaluated the health risks of four kinds of exposed populations with nasal/oral breathing patterns under optimistic and conservative estimations. The results displayed that the bioaerosol concentration in inverted umbrella aeration tank was higher than that in microporous aeration tank and residual sludge storage yard. Aerosolization ratio in residual sludge storage yard was an order of magnitude lower than that in aeration tanks. Sludge workers were at higher health risks than the other three exposed populations. The health risks of nasal breathers (infection risk: 1.62 × 10−5–2.56 × 10−3 pppy; disease burden: 4.24 × 10−8–6.72 × 10−6 DALYs pppy) were 0.61–0.63 times higher than those of oral breathers (infection risk: 9.95 × 10−6–1.59 × 10−3 pppy; disease burden: 2.61 × 10−8–4.18 × 10−6 DALYs pppy). For female field engineers using oral breathing, laboratory technicians, and researchers without personal protective equipment (PPE), infection risk and disease burden had the opposite results, which indicated that satisfying one certain benchmark did not mean absolute safety. In addition, health risks of exposed populations were reduced by an order of magnitude after wearing PPE. This study can provide a reliable theoretical basis for the risk prevention of bioaerosols and supply data support for the strategies of health risk control perspectives for local sewage utilities.

Abstract:Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) released along with soil disturbance during the remediation of abandoned industrial sites have attracted great attention due to their possible toxicity and odour. However, the real-time emission characteristics of these VOCs and their subsequent effects on health and olfaction are less understood. In this study, the gaseous VOCs released from soil disturbance by excavators and drilling rigs at an abandoned chemical pesticide plant were monitored online with a laboratory-built single photoionization time-of-flight mass spectrometer (SPI-TOFMS). Twelve main VOCs with total mean concentrations ranging from 2350 to 3410 μg m −3 were observed, with dichloromethane (DCM) having a significant contribution. The total concentrations of the remaining 11 VOCs increased substantially during soil disturbance, with the total mean concentrations increasing from 18.65–39.05 to 37.95–297.94 μg m −3 and those of peak concentrations increasing from 28.46–58.97 to 88.38–839.13 μg m −3 . This increase in VOC concentrations during soil disturbance leads to an enhanced heath risk for on-site workers. The distinctive difference between the mean and peak concentrations of VOCs indicates the importance of using mean and peak concentrations, respectively, for risk and olfactory evaluation due to the rapid response of the human nose to odours. As a result, the cumulative noncarcinogenic risk at the relatively high pollutant plot was higher than the occupational safety limit, while the total carcinogenic risks at all monitored scenarios exceeded the acceptable limit. Among the VOCs investigated, DCM and trichloroethylene (TCE) were determined to be crucial pollutants for both noncarcinogenic and carcinogenic risks of VOCs. With regard to olfactory effects, organic sulphides, including dimethyl disulphide (DMDS), dimethyl sulphide (DMS), and dimethyl trisulphide (DMTS) were identified as dominant odour contributors (78.28–92.11%) during soil disturbance.
