Abstract:The development of transition-metal sulfides, such as nickel sulfides (e.g., Ni3S2), as catalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction is one potential solution to environmental pollution and energy crisis. However, its limited utilization of visible light and high recombination ratio of photoinduced electron–hole pairs suppress its photocatalytic activity. The key issue in improving photocatalytic efficiency lies in fabricating a p–n heterojunction with efficient interfacial contact and broadband absorption. Here, we developed a method for fabricating an interlaced Ni3S2/MoS2 heterostructure with close interfacial contact. In our fabrication approach, a porous Ni3S2 scaffold is prepared by chemical vapor deposition and a hydrothermal method is used to prepare a Ni3S2/MoS2 photocatalyst with close interfacial contact. The numerous interfaces of the interlaced Ni3S2/MoS2 heterostructures promote effective electron–hole pair separation and facilitate electron transfer. Meanwhile, the hybrid Ni3S2/MoS2 nanostructures favor broadband absorption extending from 300 to 800 nm. As a result, the hybrid Ni3S2/MoS2 exhibits a remarkable rate of hydrogen evolution (540.75 μmol g−1 h−1), which is 5.71 and 3.89 times greater than those of pure Ni3S2 and MoS2, respectively, under otherwise identical conditions. The results of this work are significant for developing promising transition-metal sulfide heterostructures in the field of hydrogen evolution by photocatalytic water splitting.
Rational design of ZnCdS/TpPa-1-COF heterostructure photocatalyst by strengthening the interface connection in solar hydrogen production reactions

Abstract:ZnCdS quantum dots (QDs) are highly coveted in photocatalysis research for their exceptional visible-light responses and high light-absorption coefficients. However, their practical application is hindered by their tendency to aggregate, due to having high surface energies. To address this issue, herein, a heterostructure is synthesized by growing ZnCdS QDs with a size of approximately 5 nm onto the surface of a two-dimensional (2D) covalent organic framework (COF), TpPa-1-COF. This approach suppresses the aggregation of the QDs and improves their stability. The ZnCdS/TpPa-1-COF composite exhibited a peak hydrogen evolution rate of 6244.16 μmol·g −1 ·h −1 , which was 2.89 and 4.18 times greater than that of ZnCdS and TpPa-1-COF, respectively. The zero-dimensional/two-dimensional (0D/2D) heterojunction formed by ZnCdS and TpPa-1-COF generates a strong interfacial force, which is attributed to the intimate contact between the interfaces. Tight connections accelerate charge separation, improve the utilisation of reduced electrons, and reduce the extent of agglomeration of the ZnCdS QDs, thereby resulting in high hydrogen production activity of the composites. Meanwhile, the photocatalytic mechanism is studied using Kelvin probe force microscopy and theoretical calculations. This study offers a novel approach for creating sulfide photocatalysts and is crucial for investigating the potential practical applications of the related photocatalysts.

Abstract:ZnO, as a typical n-type semiconductor catalyst with low cost and high electron mobility, is concerned by numerous pursuers in the field of photocatalysis. However, because of its poor photo-reduction ability and high recombination rate, the ZnO in photocatalytic H2 evolution is greatly limited. To acquire an outstanding photocatalytic H2 evolution performance, 3D ordered macroporous (3DOM) ZnO is sulfurized in-situ to construct 3DOM ZnS@ZnO heterostructure. The ordered macroporous structure not only accelerates the migration of electrons and ions but also curtails the shift space of electrons and holes. The multi-junction assemblage between ZnO and ZnS effectively decreases the recombination of electron-hole pairs and improves the photo-redox capacity. The 3DOM Pt/ZnS@ZnO heterostructure exhibiting an excellent performance is 87.6 μmol g−1 h−1 in pure water. Therefore, our research presents an innovative procedure for designing other porous heterostructure photocatalysts.

Fabrication of novel Mn0.43Cd0.57S/ZnCo2O4 p-n heterojunction photocatalyst with efficient charge separation for highly enhanced visible-light-driven hydrogen evolution

Abstract:The construction of efficient and low-cost photocatalytic systems is a major challenge in the field of photocatalysis. An efficient heterojunction photocatalyst designed for water splitting is also an interesting prospect in energy conversion. In this study, a novel Mn0.43Cd0.57S/ZnCo2O4 p-n heterojunction photocatalyst was prepared via a simple solvothermal method. Mn0.43Cd0.57S was loaded on the surface the of noble metal-free transition metal oxide ZnCo2O4 to prevent the agglomeration of particles, resulting in efficiently improving the photocatalytic performance of the material. Due to the Fermi level balance, the band bending of the two materials constructs a p-n heterojunction, which stimulates the transfer of photogenerated electrons from the CB of Mn0.43Cd0.57S to the CB of ZnCo2O4. The uniformly dispersed p-n heterojunction structure effectively suppresses the recombination of photoinduced charges and preserves stronger redox charges. As a result, the established Mn0.43Cd0.57S/ZnCo2O4 heterojunction showed the best photocatalytic hydrogen production concentration (92.1 mmol g−1 h−1), which was 4.7 times that of the original Mn0.43Cd0.57S (19.4 mmol g−1 h−1) and 54.2 times that of ZnCo2O4 (1.7 mmol g−1 h−1). This strategy will provide new insights into the development of new photocatalysts.

Abstract:The construction of Z-scheme charge transfer system to achieve high-efficiency photolysis of water to produce hydrogen is a promising approach in the field of photocatalysis. Herein, a series of novel direct Z-scheme Cu2ZnSnS4/Cu2O (CZTS/Cu2O) photocatalytic materials with different Cu2O content is successfully synthesized via simple solvothermal method and oxidation-reduction method. The obtain CZTS/Cu2O composite photocatalysts possess the superior photocatalytic H2 production. Particularly, the CZTS/Cu2O [n(CZTS): n(Cu2O) = 2:1] composite photocatalyst exhibits an exceptionally high photocatalytic hydrogen evolution rate of 897 μ mol g−1 h−1, up to 7.7 times higher than that of pure CZTS. This enhanced photocatalytic activity is attributed to the synergistic effect of the junction and Z-scheme charge transfer mechanism between Cu2O and CZTS, which presents high-efficient charge carriers’ separation. Meanwhile, the good stability of the catalyst has been proved by four cycles of experiments. Thus, this work not only provides insights into the Z-scheme mechanism in heterostructure catalysts but also opens up a promising avenue for developing high-performance photocatalysts for the solar light photocatalytic hydrogen production.

Abstract:In studying photocatalytic splitting of water, the efficiency and stability of catalysts for hydrogen evolution is a thorny problem. Conjugated polymer is a novel photocatalyst that can harness solar energy and have the advantages of high efficiency, non-toxicity and long-lasting visible light tolerance, making them a popular photocatalyst material. In this paper, the organic polyfluorene derivatives PF-((g-N3)-alt-(g-OH))/inorganic semiconductor ZnxCd1-xS composite catalyst PF-((g-N3)-alt-(g-OH))/ZnxCd1-xS (ZPF-OH) was synthesized, and the S-scheme heterojunction was successfully constructed to achieve efficient and stable hydrogen evolution. The hydrogen evolution activity of the composite photocatalytic material ZPF-OH-5 remained stable in 0.35/0.25 M Na2S/Na2SO3 solution for 60 h without replacing the sacrificial reagent. The 8.41 mmol g−1 h−1 hydrogen evolution performance of ZPF-OH-5 is 50 times higher than the case of pure ZnxCd1-xS but also 11 times higher than that of PF-((g-N3)-alt-(g-OH)) in 0.35/0.25 M Na2S/Na2SO3 solution. The apparent quantum efficiency at 400 nm has corresponded to 7.9% in 10% of lactic acid solution. In addition, the in-situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy irradiation and fluorescence analysis has used to explore the electron transfer path after the coupling of the two pure catalysts and to confirm the formation of S-scheme heterojunction in the composite catalysts. The optimized energy band structure and high electron transfer rate of organic-inorganic S-scheme heterojunction composite catalyst promote the H2 evolution, which shows excellent potential in stable and efficient photocatalytic hydrogen evolution.

A Z-scheme ZnIn 2 S 4 /ZnS heterojunction catalyst: insight into enhanced photocatalytic performance and mechanism

Abstract:The reasonable design of a highly efficient photocatalyst to improve its hydrogen production performance has attracted extensive attention. In this work, ZnIn 2 S 4 /ZnS (ZIS/ZnS) heterojunctions were constructed through a one-step solvothermal method, which ensures a good microscopic relationship between different phases and keeps their interfaces in close contact. The optimized ZIS/ZnS catalyst exhibited exceptionally enhanced photocatalytic activity under simulated AM 1.5G irradiation, and the maximum hydrogen evolution rate reached 464.1 μmol h −1 , which was 16.2 and 7.3 times higher than that of pure ZnS and ZIS, respectively. Photo/electrochemical analyses proved that the ZIS/ZnS heterojunction has high charge separation efficiency and a strong redox ability. A Z-scheme electron transfer mechanism was proposed to explain the dramatic increase in photocatalytic activity which was based on photodeposition experiments. In addition, the catalyst also showed excellent hydrogen evolution activity under visible light irradiation ( λ > 420 nm). We explored the charge transfer mechanism in detail under different light conditions, employing in situ XPS and photo-deposition experiments.

Abstract:The growing concern over the rapid consumption of fossil fuels has spurred scientists to seek environment-friendly and sustainable energy alternatives. The utilization of photocatalytic water splitting shows great potential in generating environmentally friendly hydrogen energy. Zirconium-based porphyrin MOF-545 has drawn extensive attention in photocatalysis since it has strong light absorption and fast electron transfer capability. A series of Zr-based metalloporphyrins containing different metals, MOF-545M (M = Co, Ni, Cu, Zn), were synthesized and assembled with solid solution ZnxCd1-xS (ZCS) nanoparticle to develop the corresponding of hybrid photocatalysts, ZCS/MOF-545M. Various characterizations show that introducing the porphyrin MOF-545Co not only improve the visible light response range of Zn0.5Cd0.5S (ZCS-0.5) but also enhance the carrier separation efficiency of ZCS-0.5. The carrier transfer direction during the reaction was confirmed by surface photovoltage spectroscopy and shows the formation of S-scheme. Under visible light irradiation, the hybrid photocatalyst ZCS-0.5/MOF-545Co exhibits a high H2 evolution rate of 148 μmol h-1, with increases of 52.8, 22.9 and 6.5 times than those of bare ZnS, CdS and ZCS-0.5, respectively. The present work gives a strategy for erecting S-scheme heterojunction to inhibit the photocorrosion of metal sulfides and enhancement the carrier separation efficiency.

Abstract:ZnCdS, a metal chalcogenide solid solution, has attracted significant attention. However, two primary challenges hinder its widespread application in photocatalytic hydrogen evolution: the rapid recombination rate of photogenerated carriers and susceptibility to photo-oxidation in the aqueous environments. In this article, a facile hydrothermal route was employed for the first time to uniformly assemble SnS2 nanoparticles onto the surface of Zn0.2Cd0.8S (ZCS) nanopolyhedra. The intimate contact of two materials resulted in the formation of heterojunctions. By adjusting the content of SnS2, the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performance was optimized to reach up to 12170 μmol/gh, which is 1.9 times of the pristine ZCS. Notably, the photocatalyst demonstrated remarkable stability with an apparent quantum yield (AQY) of 15.5% at 420 nm. The enhanced photocatalytic performance can be attributed to the following factors: (i) The heterojunction composite, with larger surface area and more micropores, provides additional active sites and exhibits high photocatalytic activity; (ii) The internal electric field accelerates the separation of photogenerated carriers and reduces the recombination rate of electron-hole pairs; (iii) The photogenerated holes can be quickly transferred to the valence band of SnS2 and react with triethanolamine, thereby significantly reducing the photo-oxidation of ZCS. This work not only proposed a feasible route to improve the photocatalytic activity of ZCS, but also provided insights into the role of heterojunctions and the reaction mechanism.

Abstract:The rapid recombination of photoinduced charge carriers and poor redox ability seriously hinder the photocatalytic activity. In this study, a novel 0D/0D ZnS/Ag6Si2O7 heterojunction photocatalyst was successfully prepared by a simple hydrothermal-calcination method, and its structure, morphology, etc. were characterized. The experimental results show that the photocatalytic performance of pure ZnS nanoparticles is very weak. However, the addition of Ag6Si2O7 greatly improves the photocatalytic performance, and the maximum hydrogen evolution within 4 h is 524 μmolg−1h−1, which is about 5 times of the original ZnS. The enhanced mechanism of high activity and high stability was studied by various characterization techniques. It was revealed that the construction of 0D/0D heterojunction and the close interfacial contact between ZnS and Ag6Si2O7 could accelerate the transfer and separation of photoexcited e−-h+ pairs, which can also improve its photocatalytic performance. In addition, the reasonable mechanism of improving photocatalytic activity was discussed, which also provides new insights for the design and application of 0D/0D heterojunction photocatalyst in the field of photocatalysis.

Abstract:Low utilization of photogenerated electrons is usually caused by severe carrier recombination, being one of bottlenecks towards acquiring highly efficient photocatalytic hydrogen production system. Here, an artificial Z-scheme CuWO4/ZnIn2S4 heterojunction is integrated with NixP/ZnIn2S4 Ohmic contact to form a fascinating ternary-component system. The Z-scheme heterojunction can not only preserve excellent carrier separation and sunlight harvesting capability, but also markedly eliminate the photogenerated holes and improve the long-term photostability of ZnIn2S4. Additionally, the electrons can be further extracted from ZnIn2S4 to NixP due to the Ohmic contact, finally enhancing the utilization of photogenerated electrons, inhibiting the electron/hole recombination and prolonging the lifetime of photogenerated electrons. Benefiting from the synergistic effect of Z-scheme structure and Ohmic contact, the ternary system with excellent electron-extracting capacity exhibits 14-folds enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen evolution activity, compared to pure ZnIn2S4. This work may provide a valuable guideline in preparing highly efficient photocatalytic hydrogen production system.

1D/1D W18O49/Cd0.9Zn0.1S S-scheme heterojunction with spatial charge separation for high-yield photocatalytic H2 evolution

Abstract:Semiconductor photocatalytic water splitting is a green way to convert solar energy into chemical energy, but the recombination of electron and hole pairs and the low utilization of sunlight restrict the development of photocatalytic technology. By comparing the morphologies and hydrogen production properties of different proportions of solid solutions (CdxZn1-xS), one-dimensional (1D) Cd0.9Zn0.1S nanorods (NRs) with the best photocatalytic properties are obtained. In addition, 1D W18O49 nanowires are assembled on the surface of 1D Cd0.9Zn0.1S NRs to construct a novel 1D/1D step-scheme (S-scheme) W18O49/Cd0.9Zn0.1S heterojunction photocatalyst. The W18O49/Cd0.9Zn0.1S heterojunction expands the optical absorption capacity of Cd0.9Zn0.1S NRs to provide more energy for the photoexcitation of electrons. The optimal hydrogen production rate of W18O49/Cd0.9Zn0.1S NRs with W18O49 content of 9 wt% is as high as 66.3 mmol·h-1·g-1, which is 5.7 times and 1.6 times higher than that of Cd0.9Zn0.1S NRs and 1 wt% Pt/Cd0.9Zn0.1S NRs. The apparent quantum efficiency (AQE) of 9 wt% W18O49/Cd0.9Zn0.1S reaches 56.0 % and 25.9 % under light wavelength irradiation at 370 and 456 nm, respectively. After the 20 h cycle stability test, the activity of photocatalytic hydrogen evolution does not decrease, due that the severe photo-corrosion of Cd0.9Zn0.1S NRs is efficiently inhibited. This work not only provides a simple and controllable synthesis method for the preparation of heterojunction structure, but also opens up a new way to improve the hydrogen evolution activity and stability of sulfur compounds.

Abstract:Semiconductor photocatalytic hydrogen evolution (PHE) is used to convert solar energy to hydrogen energy. Therefore, a low-cost, effective, and dependable photocatalyst could be a viable solution to environmental and energy crises. However, performing energy-conversion reactions by preparing photocatalysts with suitable photoabsorption and effective charge separation is challenging. Herein, a novel CoMn2O4-ZnIn2S4 (CMO-ZIS) hollow microcube composite catalyst with a p-n heterojunction is constructed, in which ZnIn2S4 nanosheets are grown in situ on the surfaces of CoMn2O4 hollow microcubes. Surprisingly, 10% CoMn2O4-ZnIn2S4 (CMO-ZIS-10) exhibits a PHE rate of up to 11.04 mmol h−1 g−1, which is approximately 3.6 times higher than that of pure ZnIn2S4. In addition, to maintain the excellent visible light absorption efficiency of ZnIn2S4 nanosheets, the close-contact heterogeneous interface of CMO-ZIS enables easy separation and transfer of the carriers. Furthermore, the hollow structure increases the absorption efficiency of sunlight and provides more active sites, thus increasing the reactivity of photocatalyst. In this paper, we report a workable approach for building heterojunction photocatalysts powered by water splitting.

Abstract:Sluggish elimination of photogenerated holes remains a bottleneck problem that usually causes low-utilization efficiency towards photogenerated electron and serious photocorrosion in photocatalytic water splitting system. To overcome these limitations, herein, a p-n-n-type Ni(OH) 2 /NiIn 2 S 4 /ZnIn 2 S 4 (NOH/NIS/ZIS) heterojunction was constructed through an in-situ photochemical transition. On account of the favorable multi-component features, integrating p-n-type NOH/NIS heterojunction into II-type NIS/ZIS heterojunction was an efficient strategy to facilitate the carrier separation, hole-extraction and charge utilization. Consequently, p-n-n-type NOH/NIS/ZIS hybrids exhibited excellent visible-light-driven hydrogen production performance. The highest hydrogen production rate of 5448.3 μmol·h −1 ·g −1 was 10.6 times higher than that of pure ZIS (516.0 μmol·h −1 ·g −1 ). More importantly, successive hole-extraction markedly enhanced the anti-photocorrosion and long-term stability of ZIS. The repeated experiments exhibited an enhanced photocatalytic activity of 106.0 % within four cyclic experiments, far higher than that (−28.7%) of pure ZIS. Our findings may provide a deep insight into the photocorrosion mechanism of sulfides and open a new opportunity for the development of highly-efficient and durable photocatalytic water splitting system.

Abstract:The distribution of verb tenses in written and oral productions has been used as an index of temporal orientation. To investigate whether such distribution can, indeed, be used to indicate time orientation, 81 college students were asked to write one story about an important past event, another on an important future event, and the third on an important present event. Differentiation among the essays was accomplished on the basis of the distribution of verb tenses.

Abstract:TiO2 is a promising photocatalyst with limited use in practical applications owing to its wide bandgap, narrow light response range, and rapid recombination of photoexcited carriers. To address these limitations, a novel 1D/2D TiO2/ZnIn2S4 heterostructure was designed according to the principles of the S-scheme heterojunction. The TiO2/ZnIn2S4 (TZISx) hybrids prepared via a hydrothermal method afforded significant improvement in photocatalytic hydrogen evolution (PHE) in comparison to pristine TiO2 and ZnIn2S4. In particular, the optimal TZIS2 sample (mass ratio of ZnIn2S4 to TiO2 was 0.4) exhibited the highest PHE activity (6.03 mmol/h/g), which was approximately 3.7 and 2.0 times higher than those of pristine TiO2 and ZnIn2S4, respectively. This improvement in the PHE of the TZIS2 sample could be attributed to the formation of an intimate heterojunction interface, high-efficiency separation of charge carriers, abundant reactive sites, and enhanced light absorption capacity. Notably, theoretical and experimental results demonstrated that the S-scheme mechanism of interfacial electron transfer in the TZISx composites facilitated the transfer and separation of photoexcited charge carriers, resulting in more isolated photoexcited electrons for the PHE reaction.

Abstract:To take the pronounced issue of recombination among photogenerated electrons and holes in the photocatalytic reaction, we report a WC/CaIn2S4 Schottky heterojunction photocatalyst using a straightforward one-step hydrothermal method and applied it for the enhanced hydrogen evolution reaction in photocatalysis. A stable Schottky energy barrier can be formed by closely connecting the metal-like WC with the n-type semiconductor CaIn2S4, accelerating the migration of photogenerated carriers. Meanwhile, WC can lower the overpotential for hydrogen evolution, leading to a notable enhancement in the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution rate. The hydrogen evolution rate of the optimal WC/CaIn2S4 Schottky heterojunction photocatalyst WCIS1:1 was approximately 2.3 times higher than that of Pt-loaded photocatalyst CIS+Pt. This study delves into the application significance of the Schottky heterojunction principle in the photocatalytic hydrogen production reaction. Furthermore, this study provides a novel approach to replacing noble metal Pt with metal-like WC in the field of photocatalytic hydrogen evolution.

Abstract:Exploring sustainable noble-metal-free photocatalyst still remains a huge challenge for highly efficient and durable photocatalytic H2 production. In this work, Cu3P nanosheets were successfully synthesized by a simple hydrothermal method without using any organic solvents, and red phosphorus was used as the phosphorus source. A Z-scheme Cu3P/TiO2 photocatalyst without a noble metal was rationally fabricated to achieve UV–vis harvesting. Compared to TiO2, the optimized Cu3P/TiO2 photocatalyst displays much more excellent activity with the hydrogen evolution rate of 607.5 µmol h−1 g−1, which is 30.4 folds higher than that of bare TiO2 photocatalyst under solar light irradiation. The enhancement of charge carriers separation efficiency in Cu3P/TiO2 is demonstrated by the photoluminescence (PL) spectra, transient photocurrent response and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Moreover, The photo-induced charge-transfer route of Cu3P/TiO2 is a Z-scheme transfer mode confirmed by selective deposition of Pt nanoparticles, the photocatalytic decomposition of Rhodamine B (RhB). In the Z-scheme system, the holes are left on the TiO2, and photo-exited electron will be enriched on Cu3P nanosheets for hydrogen evolution. This work will provide more insight into fabricating eco-friendly phosphide-based catalyst with efficient photocatalytic hydrogen property and sufficient durability for solar-to-chemical conversion and utilization.

Abstract:In the field of photocatalysis, when it comes to performance, ZnCdS can be said to be second to none, as its suitable bandgap structure and electron rich properties are highly sought after by most researchers. However, how to solve the severe photo corrosion and recombination of photo generated carriers has become a huge challenge that needs to be addressed. Constructing heterojunctions is an effective method to solve this problem. In this work, ZnCdS and NiMoO 4 S-scheme heterojunctions were first constructed. This catalyst tightly combines two elements together, and the synergistic effect of Ni and Mo elements in NiMoO 4 effectively suppresses the photo corrosion of ZnCdS and greatly improves its performance. The electron rich nature of ZnCdS causes its own electrons to transfer to NiMoO 4 , which in turn promotes the hydrogen evolution reaction of NiMoO 4 . In fact, the built-in electric field between catalyst interfaces provides power for electron transfer. It is worth noting that studying in situ XPS and density functional theory calculations has provided a deeper understanding of charge dynamics. This work provides ideas for improving charge transfer and designing high-performance catalysts to address energy issues
