Abstract:Photocatalysts derived from semiconductor heterojunctions for water splitting have bright prospects in solar energy conversion. Here, a Co3O4@ZIS p-n heterojunction was successfully created by developing two-dimensional ZnIn2S4 on ZIF-67-derived hollow Co3O4 nanocages, realizing efficient spatial separation of the electron-hole pair. Moreover, the black hollow structure of Co3O4 considerably increases the range of light absorption and the light utilization efficiency of the heterojunction avoids the agglomeration of ZnIn2S4 nanosheets and further improves the hydrogen generation rate of the material. The obtained Co3O4(20) @ZIS showed excellent photocatalytic H2 activity of 5.38 mmol g−1·h−1 under simulated solar light, which was seven times more than that of pure ZnIn2S4. Therefore, these kinds of constructions of hollow p-n heterojunctions have a positive prospect in solar energy conversion fields.

A Z-scheme ZnIn 2 S 4 /ZnS heterojunction catalyst: insight into enhanced photocatalytic performance and mechanism

Abstract:The reasonable design of a highly efficient photocatalyst to improve its hydrogen production performance has attracted extensive attention. In this work, ZnIn 2 S 4 /ZnS (ZIS/ZnS) heterojunctions were constructed through a one-step solvothermal method, which ensures a good microscopic relationship between different phases and keeps their interfaces in close contact. The optimized ZIS/ZnS catalyst exhibited exceptionally enhanced photocatalytic activity under simulated AM 1.5G irradiation, and the maximum hydrogen evolution rate reached 464.1 μmol h −1 , which was 16.2 and 7.3 times higher than that of pure ZnS and ZIS, respectively. Photo/electrochemical analyses proved that the ZIS/ZnS heterojunction has high charge separation efficiency and a strong redox ability. A Z-scheme electron transfer mechanism was proposed to explain the dramatic increase in photocatalytic activity which was based on photodeposition experiments. In addition, the catalyst also showed excellent hydrogen evolution activity under visible light irradiation ( λ > 420 nm). We explored the charge transfer mechanism in detail under different light conditions, employing in situ XPS and photo-deposition experiments.

Anchoring ZnIn2S4 nanosheets on cross-like FeSe2 to construct photothermal-enhanced S-scheme heterojunction for photocatalytic H2 evolution

Abstract:Rational design of the morphology and heterojunction to accelerate the separation of electron-hole pairs has played an indispensable role in improving the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution. ZnIn2S4 (ZIS) has aroused considerable attention in solar-to-chemical energy conversion due to its remarkable photoelectrical properties and relatively negative energy band, whereas it still suffers from the severe photogenerated carrier recombination and catalyst aggregation. Herein, guided by density functional theory calculations, the constructed FeSe2@ZnIn2S4 (FS@ZIS) heterojunction model has a hydrogen Gibbs free energy closer to zero compared with pure ZIS and FS, which is beneficial for hydrogen adsorption and desorption on the photocatalyst surface. Therefore, a novel cross-like core-shell FS@ZIS Step-scheme (S-scheme) heterojunction was synthesized successfully by in-situ growing ZIS nanosheets on the surface of cross-like FS. The structure with cross-like core-shell morphology not only inhibits the agglomeration of ZIS to increase specific surface area, but also provides a tight interface with S-scheme heterojunction. Moreover, the S-scheme heterojunction with a tight interface can effectively separate electron-hole pairs, leaving photoinduced charges with higher potentials. Furthermore, FS@ZIS-20 possesses exceptional photothermal capabilities, enabling the conversion of optical energy from visible and near infrared light to heat, thereby further enhancing the photocatalysis reaction. As a result, the cross-like core-shell FS@ZIS S-scheme heterojunction exhibits an excellent photocatalytic hydrogen evolution rate (7.640 mmol g-1 h-1), which is 24 times higher than that of pure ZIS (0.319 mmol g-1 h-1) under visible and near infrared light. Furthermore, employing more in-depth density functional theory calculations further investigates the charge transfer pathway of the FS@ZIS S-scheme heterojunction. This work provides insights into the construction of S-scheme heterojunctions with core-shell structure and photothermal effect for photocatalytic evolution hydrogen.

Abstract:The p-n heterojunction’s construction is considered a valid and prominent method to accelerate photogenerated carriers’ separation and transfer rate, enhancing the efficiency of photocatalytic hydrogen production. In this work, the core–shell CoFe2O4@ZnIn2S4 (CFO@ZIS) p-n heterojunction photocatalyst is designed and fabricated by growing ZIS nanosheets on yolk-shelled CFO surfaces by hydrothermal and calcination method followed by oil bath process for the first time. Notably, the CFO@ZIS-2 photocatalyst exhibits excellent cycle applicability and chemical stability and exhibits a remarkable hydrogen evolution rate of 1576.5 μmol∙g−1∙h−1 without Pt as a co-catalyst. However, the hydrogen evolution rates of pristine ZIS and CFO products are just 344.3 and 0 μmol∙g−1∙h−1, respectively. Furthermore, the analysis of structural, morphological, optical and photo/electrochemical characterizations further manifested the existence of p-n heterojunction in CFO@ZIS core–shell structure is beneficial to facilitate the separation and migration of photoinduced carriers. Meanwhile, the Z-Scheme mechanism of CFO@ZIS p-n heterojunction in photocatalytic hydrogen production has been discussed in detail. This work provides a feasible and resultful strategy to design the core–shell p-n heterojunction for the promotion of photocatalytic H2 production.

Abstract:Photocatalytic hydrogen production from water splitting is a technology that takes advantage of solar energy to produce clean and green hydrogen energy with wide application prospects. Herein, an S-scheme heterojunction photocatalyst with a nanosheets-on-nanosheets structure was successfully prepared by using a simple low-temperature water bath method and ZnIn2S4 nanosheets are generated in situ on Bi4Ti3O12 nanosheets, realizing efficient photocatalytic produce hydrogen under visible light irradiation. The optimal proportion of Bi4Ti3O12/ZnIn2S4 (BTO/ZIS) has extraordinary hydrogen production efficiency of 19.8 mmol h−1 g−1, 2.1 times that of pristine ZIS (9.2 mmol h−1 g−1). The main reasons for the improved activity of BTO/ZIS heterojunction photocatalysts are investigated by a series of photochemical characterization data analyses. Finally, its high photocatalytic performance can be attributed to more reactive active sites provided by the sheet-sheet heterostructure and the formation of S-scheme heterojunction between BTO and ZIS, which promotes the transfer of photogenerated electron-hole pairs.

Abstract:Semiconductor photocatalytic hydrogen evolution (PHE) is used to convert solar energy to hydrogen energy. Therefore, a low-cost, effective, and dependable photocatalyst could be a viable solution to environmental and energy crises. However, performing energy-conversion reactions by preparing photocatalysts with suitable photoabsorption and effective charge separation is challenging. Herein, a novel CoMn2O4-ZnIn2S4 (CMO-ZIS) hollow microcube composite catalyst with a p-n heterojunction is constructed, in which ZnIn2S4 nanosheets are grown in situ on the surfaces of CoMn2O4 hollow microcubes. Surprisingly, 10% CoMn2O4-ZnIn2S4 (CMO-ZIS-10) exhibits a PHE rate of up to 11.04 mmol h−1 g−1, which is approximately 3.6 times higher than that of pure ZnIn2S4. In addition, to maintain the excellent visible light absorption efficiency of ZnIn2S4 nanosheets, the close-contact heterogeneous interface of CMO-ZIS enables easy separation and transfer of the carriers. Furthermore, the hollow structure increases the absorption efficiency of sunlight and provides more active sites, thus increasing the reactivity of photocatalyst. In this paper, we report a workable approach for building heterojunction photocatalysts powered by water splitting.

Abstract:The construction of efficient and low-cost photocatalytic systems is a major challenge in the field of photocatalysis. An efficient heterojunction photocatalyst designed for water splitting is also an interesting prospect in energy conversion. In this study, a novel Mn0.43Cd0.57S/ZnCo2O4 p-n heterojunction photocatalyst was prepared via a simple solvothermal method. Mn0.43Cd0.57S was loaded on the surface the of noble metal-free transition metal oxide ZnCo2O4 to prevent the agglomeration of particles, resulting in efficiently improving the photocatalytic performance of the material. Due to the Fermi level balance, the band bending of the two materials constructs a p-n heterojunction, which stimulates the transfer of photogenerated electrons from the CB of Mn0.43Cd0.57S to the CB of ZnCo2O4. The uniformly dispersed p-n heterojunction structure effectively suppresses the recombination of photoinduced charges and preserves stronger redox charges. As a result, the established Mn0.43Cd0.57S/ZnCo2O4 heterojunction showed the best photocatalytic hydrogen production concentration (92.1 mmol g−1 h−1), which was 4.7 times that of the original Mn0.43Cd0.57S (19.4 mmol g−1 h−1) and 54.2 times that of ZnCo2O4 (1.7 mmol g−1 h−1). This strategy will provide new insights into the development of new photocatalysts.

Abstract:Low utilization of photogenerated electrons is usually caused by severe carrier recombination, being one of bottlenecks towards acquiring highly efficient photocatalytic hydrogen production system. Here, an artificial Z-scheme CuWO4/ZnIn2S4 heterojunction is integrated with NixP/ZnIn2S4 Ohmic contact to form a fascinating ternary-component system. The Z-scheme heterojunction can not only preserve excellent carrier separation and sunlight harvesting capability, but also markedly eliminate the photogenerated holes and improve the long-term photostability of ZnIn2S4. Additionally, the electrons can be further extracted from ZnIn2S4 to NixP due to the Ohmic contact, finally enhancing the utilization of photogenerated electrons, inhibiting the electron/hole recombination and prolonging the lifetime of photogenerated electrons. Benefiting from the synergistic effect of Z-scheme structure and Ohmic contact, the ternary system with excellent electron-extracting capacity exhibits 14-folds enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen evolution activity, compared to pure ZnIn2S4. This work may provide a valuable guideline in preparing highly efficient photocatalytic hydrogen production system.

Abstract:Photothermal synergistic catalysis is a novel technology that converts energy. In this study, ZnIn 2 S 4 with S-vacancy (ZIS-Vs) is combined with Nickel, Nickle Oxide and Carbon Nanofiber aggregates (Ni-NiO@CNFs) to create a multi-interface coupled photocatalyst with double Schottky barrier, double channel and mixed photothermal conversion effect. Theoretical calculation confirms that the Gibbs free energy (ΔG *H ) of the S-scheme heterojunction in the composite material is −0.07 eV, which is close to 0. This promotes the adsorption of H* and accelerates the formation of H 2 . Internal photothermal catalysis is achieved by visible-near infrared (Vis-NIR, RT) irradiation. The internal photothermal catalytic hydrogen production rate of the best sample (0.9Ni-NiO@CNFs/ZIS-Vs) is as high as 17.24 mmol·g −1 ·h −1 , and its photothermal conversion efficiency (η) is as high as 61.42 %. Its hydrogen production efficiency is 20.52 times that of ZIS-Vs (0.84 mmol·g −1 ·h −1 ) under visible light (Vis, RT) conditions. When the Vis-NIR light source is combined with external heating (75 °C), the hydrogen production efficiency is further improved, and the hydrogen production efficiency (29.16 mmol·g −1 ·h −1 ) is 26.75 times that of ZIS-Vs (1.09 mmol·g −1 ·h −1 , Vis-NIR, RT). Further analysis shows that the increase in hydrogen production resulted from the apparent activation energy (Ea) of the catalyst decreasing from 16.7 kJ·mol −1 to 9.28 kJ·mol −1 . This study provides a valuable prototype for the design of an efficient photothermal synergistic catalytic system.

Abstract:In this study, we developed an novel approach by creating a flower-like p-n heterojunction, where NiCo2O4 (NCO) nanoparticles are deposited onto flower-like hierarchical ZnIn2S4 (ZIS) microsphere, to facilitate photocatalytic H2 evolution from water. Theoretical calculations and experimental results underscore the synergistic effects of the heterojunction and photothermal properties in the NCO-ZIS composite, leading to a significant enhancement in photocatalytic activity. Detailed investigation of photocatalytic mechanism elucidates how the heterojunction bolsters carrier separation and suppresses carrier recombination, while the photothermal effect broadens light absorption, elevates reaction temperature, accelerates carrier migration, and reduces activation energy. Therefore, the NCO-ZIS heterojunction exhibits exceptional hydrogen evolution performance, reaching to 4507 μmol h−1 g−1, which surpasses ZIS alone by 5.04 times. This research lays the groundwork for designing highly active photothermal catalyst with broaden-spectrum solar energy utilization.

Abstract:Photothermal effect materials play an essential role in the field of solar energy utilization, and can provide additional capacity supply during photocatalytic reactions. Herein, the core–shell FeS2@ZnIn2S4 S-scheme heterojunction with coating the ZnIn2S4 nanosheets on the FeS2 raspberry-like hollow spheres was fabricated for photothermal-assisted photocatalytic H2 production. In this catalyst design system, the hollow spherical FeS2 was employed as a photothermal substrate to endow more energy for the ZnIn2S4 photo-generated charge carriers to accelerate the charge migration and elevate the temperature of the reaction system, and the interface charge transfer of the S-scheme mechanism realizes the spatial separation of the charge carriers. Meanwhile, the ZnIn2S4 nanosheet coating coated on the surface of the FeS2 hollow sphere effectively prevented the heat loss of the hybrid system. Under simulated solar irradiation (AM 1.5G), the optimal H2 production rate of the FS@ZIS heterojunction is as high as 5.05 mmol/g/h in the absence of Pt as the co-catalyst (AQE of 13.4 % at 420 nm), which is 47.9 and 53.7 times higher than that of pristine ZnIn2S4 and FeS2, respectively. Furthermore, the hydrogen production tests in simulated seawater demonstrate the extensive environmental adaptability of the as-prepared FS@ZIS S-scheme heterojunction. Our work provides a feasible strategy to construct an S-scheme heterojunction system with photothermal assistance for efficient utilization and conversion of solar energy.

Abstract:The shortage of fossil energy has become a growing global concern. It is particularly important to make full use of the infinite solar energy resources, and transform them into sustainable and clean energy. The development of hydrogen energy has become a feasible solution to solve the energy shortage problem. The preparation of photocatalysts featuring efficient charge transfer channels and high hydrogen production activity provides a pathway for the development of hydrogen energy. In this paper, we report for the first time the direct assembly of 2D ZnIn2S4 (ZIS) nanosheets on the surface of CoTiO3 (CTO). The synthesized CoTiO3/ZnIn2S4 (CTO/ZIS) photocatalyst features a direct Z-scheme charge transfer channel, which enhances the separation rate of photogenerated carriers, and accelerates the photocatalytic H2 evolution (PHE) rate. Without the assistance of any co-catalyst, the PHE rate of prepared CoTiO3/ZnIn2S4 was as high as 5.21 mmol g−1 h−1. Moreover, the H2 evolution rate of CoTiO3/ZnIn2S4 almost did not decrease significantly after four consecutive 4 h cycles. This investigation provides a valuable approach for the exploitation of novel and efficient Z-scheme photocatalysts in the application of solar energy to hydrogen energy conversion.

Abstract:The development of an efficient photocatalyst to make full use of sunlight, especially near-infrared light (NIR), remains a significant challenge in the field of photocatalysis research. Herein, an efficient photothermal-assisted photocatalytic H2 production system was constructed over the ZrC@ZnIn2S4 (ZrC@ZIS) core–shell heterostructure by a simple water bath method for realizing the photocatalytic H2 production rate of reached 32.87 μmol g-1h−1 and photothermal conversion efficiency of 43.54% under NIR irradiation (λ > 800 nm). Thermodynamically, the photothermal effect produced by the local surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect of metallic ZrC particles reduces the activation energy of the reaction and makes the reaction going forward in the ZrC@ZIS composite system. Kinetically, the formation of Schottky junction accelerates the photo-generated carrier transfer and separation and facilitates the photocatalytic water splitting into H2 production. This study provides a feasible idea for NIR-driven photothermal-assisted photocatalytic H2 evolution though the efficient utilization of solar energy.

Abstract:Photocatalytic activities based on charge transfer and separation at interfaces can be effectively promoted by matching chemical Z-scheme heterojunctions and electronic structures. However, the fabrication of morphology-controlled heterojunctions has been a challenge to many researchers. Herein, hollow spheres ZnO/In2O3 was constructed via hydrothermal strategy by fine-tuning the concentration of metal nitrate precursors, and special yolk-shell morphology was generated by the symmetrical Ostwald ripening process. The fabricated Z-Scheme heterojunction exhibited characteristic multi-channel charge transfer properties, which favors the spatial separation of carriers. The ZnO/In2O3 hollow spheres increased the utilization of light source, and the yolk-shell structure increased the interface area and the active sites. Benefiting from the synergistic effect, the ZnO/In2O3 exhibited excellent photocatalytic activities for H2 production, which was comparatively 26.7 times that obtained using ZnO nanoparticles. From calculations based on DFT, the Z-scheme photogenerated charge transfer mechanism was proposed. The proposed mechanism was verified by analyzing the chemical properties (surface) and the •O2− and •OH free radical concentrations before and after the photoreaction. The mechanism presented the ZnO/In2O3 with strong capabilities for H2 production and elucidated the improved photocatalytic performances. This work creates an innovative route for constructing Z-scheme photocatalytic systems with great photocatalytic activities for H2 production.

The formation of the S-scheme ZIS/SnS2 QDs heterojunction is demonstrated by experimental characteristics and density functional theory (DFT) analyzes, which greatly promotes charge transfer and transport under the interfacial electric field (IEF), lengthens carrier lifetime, enhances light-harvesting properties, and significantly decreases the Gibbs free energy during the catalysis reaction. Therefore, the optimized ZIS/SnS2 photocatalyst achieves a high hydrogen production rate of 1.13 mmol g−1 h−1, which is 16.14 folds the one of pure ZIS. This study provides novel perspectives into the reasonable design of S-scheme photocatalyst by virtue of the theories of energy band engineering and IEF adjustment.

Abstract:The construction of a p-n heterojunction structure is considered to be an effective method to improve the separation of electron-hole pairs in photocatalysts. A series of ZnIn2S4/CoFe2O4 (ZIS/CFO) photocatalysts with p-n heterojunctions were prepared via a method involving ultrasonication and calcination. The synthesized photocatalysts were tested and analyzed via various testing techniques, and their hydrogen evolution rates were evaluated. Compared with pure ZIS, ZIS/CFO with different mass ratios of CFO to ZIS showed improved photocatalytic hydrogen production performance, and the optimal photoactivity showed a nearly 12-fold increase, which can be attributed to the formation of p-n junctions and the formed internal electric field, accelerating the separation of electron-hole pairs and effectively improving the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution rate. The excellent stability of the ZIS/CFO composite was proven by three cycle experiments. In addition, the ZIS/CFO composite also possessed excellent magnetic properties to realize facial magnetic recoverability. This work paves the way for the design and preparation of magnetically recoverable p-n heterojunction photocatalysts.

Abstract:A new ZnS/CdS heterojunction is constructed through the direct sulfurization of a metal ions exchanged Zn/Cd-MOF precursor(MOF=metal-organic framework material). The composition, structure, morphology, photoabsorption and photoelectric performance of the ZnS/CdS are characterized by powder X-ray diffraction(PXRD), scanning electron microscope(SEM), transmission electron microscope(TEM), diffuse reflection spectrum(DRS), photoelectric current(PEC), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy(EIS) and photoluminescence(PL) technologies. Since the metal ions are highly orderly separated by the organic ligands and the inherent porosity of the Zn/Cd-MOF, the as-synthesized ZnS/CdS possesses a large surface area and intimate contact at the heterogeneous interface with uniform ZnS/CdS nanoparticles. The photocatalytic hydrogen evolution activity of the ZnS/CdS is investigated under visible light irradiation(λ⩾420 nm). It exhibits enhanced photocatalytic performance that the optimal ZnS/CdS achieves a maximum average hydrogen production rate of 2348 µmol·h<sup>−1</sup>·g<sup>−1</sup>. A possible electron transfer mechanism is therefore proposed by the analyses of the Mott-Schottky plots.

Abstract:One of the major challenges in photocatalytic hydrogen production is to improve the separation efficiency of photo-generated carriers. Therefore, we prepared ZIS/BMO heterojunctions by hydrothermal method to promote the directional separation of photo-generated carriers. A series of characterization results show that the successful preparation of heterojunctions substantially increases the separation and transfer rate of photogenerated carriers. 11% ZIS/BMO had the highest photocatalytic hydrogen production performance reached 1502.6 mmol/g/h, which is 2.78 times than ZIS monomer. Simple construction of heterojunctions but dramatic improvement of photocatalytic hydrogen production performance opens up new horizons for photocatalyst modification.(c) 2023 Hydrogen Energy Publications LLC. Abstract:The ideal solution to the energy shortage problem is to split water into hydrogen (H2) utilizing solar-driven semiconductor photocatalytic technology. Nevertheless, severe carrier recombination is the major cause of decreased activity over photocatalysts. Construction of internal electric field (IEF) by coupling semiconductor with metal co-catalyst can effectively promote carrier separation. Herein, Co@C with the Co encapsulated in the C layer as a co-catalyst anchored on the surface of ZnIn2S4 nanosheets via a facile electrostatic self-assembly strategy, achieving outstanding photocatalytic water splitting into H2 under simulated solar irradiation (AM 1.5G) with the production rate of 18.1 mmol h−1 g−1, which is 109.7 times higher than that of bare ZIS without assisted of Pt. Enhancement of photocatalytic H2 evolution activity of Co@C/ZIS is mainly attributed to the construction of giant IEF (4.6-fold higher than ZIS) and suitable environment for hydrogen adsorption and desorption (ΔGH* ∼ 0), which endows the following several advantages: (i) accelerating the migration and separation of photo-generated charges; (ii) improving the hydrogen release kinetics. Our work not only provides a design idea for facile preparation of a high-efficient composite photocatalyst, but also expands the application range of transition metal@carbon as a co-catalyst in energy photocatalysis.
