Abstract:Quantum memory is the core device for the construction of large-scale quantum networks. For scalable and convenient practical applications, integrated optical memories, especially on-chip optical memories, are crucial requirements because they can be easily integrated with other on-chip devices. Here, we report the coherent optical memory based on a type-IV waveguide fabricated on the surface of a rare-earth ion-doped crystal (i.e., Eu3+:Y2SiO5). The properties of the optical transition (7F0→5D0) of the Eu3+ ions inside the surface waveguide are well preserved compared to those of the bulk crystal. Spin-wave atomic frequency comb storage is demonstrated inside the type-IV waveguide. The reliability of this device is confirmed by the high interference visibility of 97±1% between the retrieval pulse and the reference pulse. The developed on-chip optical memory paves the way towards integrated quantum nodes.

Abstract:Photonic quantum memory is the core element in quantum information processing (QIP). For the scalable and convenient practical applications, great efforts have been devoted to the integrated quantum memory based on various waveguides fabricated in solids. However, on-demand storage of qubits, which is an essential requirement for QIP, is still challenging to be implemented using such integrated quantum memory. Here we report the on-demand storage of time-bin qubits in an on-chip waveguide memory fabricated on the surface of a ^{151}Eu^{3+}:Y_{2}SiO_{5} crystal, utilizing the Stark-modulated atomic frequency comb protocol. A qubit storage fidelity of 99.3%±0.2% is obtained with single-photon-level coherent pulses, far beyond the highest fidelity achievable using the classical measure-and-prepare strategy. The developed integrated quantum memory with the on-demand retrieval capability represents an important step toward practical applications of integrated quantum nodes in quantum networks.

Abstract:Quantum memories at telecom wavelengths are crucial for the construction of large-scale quantum networks based on existing fiber networks. On-demand storage of telecom photonic qubits is an essential request for such networking applications but yet to be demonstrated. Here we demonstrate the storage and on-demand retrieval of telecom photonic qubits using a laser-written waveguide fabricated in an Er1673+:Y2SiO5 crystal. Both ends of the waveguide memory are directly connected with fiber arrays with a fiber-to-fiber efficiency of 51%. Storage fidelity of 98.3(1)% can be obtained for time-bin qubits encoded with single-photon-level coherent pulses, which is far beyond the maximal fidelity that can be achieved with a classical measure and prepared strategy. Abstract:Quantum memory is a fundamental building block for large-scale quantum networks. On-demand optical storage with a large bandwidth, a high multimode capacity and an integrated structure simultaneously is crucial for practical application. However, this has not been demonstrated yet. Here, we fabricate an on-chip waveguide in a $\mathrm {^{151}Eu^{3+}:Y_2SiO_5}$ crystal with insertion losses of 0.2 dB, and propose a novel pumping scheme to enable spin-wave atomic frequency comb (AFC) storage with a bandwidth of 11 MHz inside the waveguide. Based on this, we demonstrate the storage of 200 temporal modes using the AFC scheme and conditional on-demand storage of 100 temporal modes using the spin-wave AFC scheme. The interference visibility between the readout light field and the reference light field is $99.0\% \pm 0.6\%$ and $97\% \pm 3\%$ for AFC and spin-wave AFC storage, respectively, indicating the coherent nature of this low-loss, multimode and integrated storage device.

Abstract:An optical quantum memory is a device that can store photonic quantum information and release it after a controlled time. It is an essential component for overcoming channel losses in large-scale quantum networks. Optical quantum memories have been demonstrated with various physical systems including atomic gases, single atoms in optical cavities, and rare-earth-ion doped solids. Now, quantum memories are marching toward miniaturization and integration for large-scale practical applications. Solid state systems stand as a natural choice due to the physical stability and ease of micro or nano fabrication using well-established techniques. In the past decade, considerable efforts have been devoted to developing photonic integrated quantum memories, that is, quantum memories based on micro/nano-photonic structures manufactured in solids. Remarkable performances have been achieved with integrated quantum memories, with the advantages of lower laser/electric power requirements, small volumes, large storage densities, and easy implementations. In this article, the basic concepts of optical quantum memories, the state-of-the-art technologies for fabricating integrated quantum memories in rare-earth ions doped crystals, and recent advances are introduced, and the roadmap for developing practically useful devices for applications in quantum networks is discussed.

Abstract:We demonstrate the first solid-state spin-wave optical quantum memory with on-demand read-out. Using the full atomic frequency comb scheme in a \PrYSO crystal, we store weak coherent pulses at the single-photon level with a signal to noise ratio $> 10$. Narrow-band spectral filtering based on spectral hole burning in a second \PrYSO crystal is used to filter out the excess noise created by control pulses to reach an unconditional noise level of $(2.0 \pm 0.3) \times10^{-3}$ photons per pulse. We also report spin-wave storage of photonic time-bin qubits with conditional fidelities higher than a measure and prepare strategy, demonstrating that the spin-wave memory operates in the quantum regime. This makes our device the first demonstration of a quantum memory for time-bin qubits, with on demand read-out of the stored quantum information. These results represent an important step for the use of solid-state quantum memories in scalable quantum networks.

Abstract:$\mathrm {^{151}Eu^{3+}}$-doped yttrium silicate ($\mathrm {^{151}Eu^{3+}:Y_2SiO_5}$ ) crystal is a unique material that possesses hyperfine states with coherence time up to 6 h. Many efforts have been devoted to the development of this material as optical quantum memories based on the bulk crystals, but integrable structures (such as optical waveguides) that can promote $\mathrm {^{151}Eu^{3+}:Y_2SiO_5}$-based quantum memories to practical applications, have not been demonstrated so far. Here we report the fabrication of type 2 waveguides in a $\mathrm {^{151}Eu^{3+}:Y_2SiO_5}$ crystal using femtosecond-laser micromachining. The resulting waveguides are compatible with single-mode fibers and have the smallest insertion loss of $4.95\ dB$. On-demand light storage is demonstrated in a waveguide by employing the spin-wave atomic frequency comb (AFC) scheme and the revival of silenced echo (ROSE) scheme. We implement a series of interference experiments based on these two schemes to characterize the storage fidelity. Interference visibility of the readout pulse is $0.99\pm 0.03$ for the spin-wave AFC scheme and $0.97\pm 0.02$ for the ROSE scheme, demonstrating the reliability of the integrated optical memory.

Abstract:Faithfully storing an unknown quantum light state is essential to advanced quantum communication and distributed quantum computation applications. The required quantum memory must have high fidelity to improve the performance of a quantum network. Here we report the reversible transfer of photonic polarization states into collective atomic excitation in a compact solid-state device. The quantum memory is based on an atomic frequency comb (AFC) in rare-earth ion-doped crystals. We obtain up to 0.999 process fidelity for the storage and retrieval process of single-photon-level coherent pulse. This reliable quantum memory is a crucial step toward quantum networks based on solid-state devices.

Abstract:The faithful storage and coherent manipulation of quantum states with matter-systems would enable the realization of large-scale quantum networks based on quantum repeaters. To achieve useful communication rates, highly multimode quantum memories are required to construct a multiplexed quantum repeater. Here, we present a demonstration of on-demand storage of orbital-angular-momentum states with weak coherent pulses at the single-photon-level in a rare-earth-ion-doped crystal. Through the combination of this spatial degree-of-freedom (DOF) with temporal and spectral degrees of freedom, we create a multiple-DOF memory with high multimode capacity. This device can serve as a quantum mode converter with high fidelity, which is a fundamental requirement for the construction of a multiplexed quantum repeater. This device further enables essentially arbitrary spectral and temporal manipulations of spatial-qutrit-encoded photonic pulses in real time. Therefore, the developed quantum memory can serve as a building block for scalable photonic quantum information processing architectures.

Abstract:Telecom-band integrated quantum memory is an elementary building block for developing quantum networks compatible with fiber communication infrastructures. Towards such a network with large capacity, an integrated multimode photonic quantum memory at telecom band has yet been demonstrated. Here we report a fiber-integrated multimode quantum storage of single photon at telecom band on a laser-written chip. The storage device is a fiber-pigtailed Er3+:LiNbO3 waveguide and allows a storage of up to 330 temporal modes of heralded single photon with 4-GHz-wide bandwidth at 1532 nm and a 167-fold increasing of coincidence detection rate with respect to single mode. Our memory system with all-fiber addressing is performed using telecom-band fiber-integrated and on-chip devices. The results represent an important step for the future quantum networks using integrated photonics devices.

Efficient and reversible optical-to-spin conversion for solid-state quantum memories

Abstract:Long-duration and efficient quantum memories for photons are key components of quantum repeater and network applications. To achieve long duration storage in atomic systems, a short-lived optical coherence can be mapped into a long-lived spin coherence, which is the basis for many quantum memory schemes. In this work, we present modeling and measurements of the back-and-forth, i.e. reversible, optical-to-spin conversion for an atomic frequency comb memory. The AFC memory is implemented in $^{151}\textrm{Eu}^{3+}:\textrm{Y}_2\textrm{SiO}_5$ with an applied magnetic field of 231 mT, which allows lifting Zeeman transition degeneracy which otherwise cause time-domain interference in the optical-to-spin conversion. By optimizing the conversion using the developed simulation tool, we achieve a total efficiency of up to 96%, including the spin echo sequence and spin dephasing, for a storage time of 500 $\mu$s. Our methods and results pave the way for long-duration storage of single photon states in 151Eu3+:Y2SiO5 with high signal-to-noise, at the millisecond timescale.

Abstract:We present a detailed analysis of a high-bandwidth quantum memory protocol for storing single photons in a rare-earth-ion doped crystal. The basic idea is to benefit from a coherent free-induced decay type re-emission which occurs naturally when a photon with a broadband spectrum is absorbed by a narrow atomic transition in an optically dense ensemble. This allows for a high-bandwidth memory for realistic material parameters. Long storage time and on-demand readout are obtained by means of spin states in a lambda-type configuration, through the transfer of the optical coherence to a spin coherence (so-called spin-wave storage). We give explicit formulae and show numerical results which make it possible to gain insight into the dependence of the memory efficiency on the optical depth and on the width and the shape of stored photons. We present a feasibility study in rare-earth doped crystals and show that high efficiencies and high bandwidth can be obtained with realistic parameters. High-bandwidth memories using spin-wave storage offers the possibility of very high time-bandwidth products, which is important for experiments where high repetition rates are needed.

Efficient Storage of Multidimensional Telecom Photons in a Solid-State Quantum Memory

Abstract:Efficient storage of telecom-band quantum optical information represents a crucial milestone for establishing distributed quantum optical networks. Erbium ions in crystalline hosts provide a promising platform for telecom quantum memories; however, their practical applications have been hindered by demanding operational conditions, such as ultra-high magnetic fields and ultra-low temperatures. In this work, we demonstrate the storage of telecom photonic qubits encoded in polarization, frequency, and time-bin bases. Using the atomic frequency comb protocol in an Er$^{3+}$-doped crystal, we developed a memory initialization scheme that improves storage efficiency by over an order of magnitude under practical experimental conditions. Quantum process tomography further confirms the memory's performance, achieving a fidelity exceeding 92%.

Abstract:A quantum memory that can store quantum states faithfully and retrieve them on demand has wide applications in quantum information science. An efficient quantum memory in the microwave regime working alongside quantum processors based on superconducting quantum circuits may serve as an important architecture for quantum computers. Here we realize on-demand storage and retrieval of weak coherent microwave photon pulses at the single-photon level. We implement a superconducting multi-resonator quantum memory which is composed of a set of frequency-tunable coplanar transmission line (CPW) resonators. By dynamically tuning the resonant frequencies of the resonators, we achieve tunable memory bandwidth from 10 MHz to 55 MHz, with an overall storage efficiency up to 12 % with well preserved phase coherence. We further demonstrate on-demand storage and retrieval of a time-bin flying qubit. This result opens up a prospect to integrate our chip-based quantum memory with the state-of-the-art superconducting quantum circuit technology for quantum information processing.

Abstract:Photonic entanglement source and quantum memory are two basic building blocks of linear-optical quantum computation and long-distance quantum communication. In the past decades, intensive researches have been carried out, and remarkable progress, particularly based on the spontaneous parametric down-converted (SPDC) entanglement source and atomic ensembles, has been achieved. Currently, an important task towards scalable quantum information processing (QIP) is to efficiently write and read entanglement generated from a SPDC source into and out of an atomic quantum memory. Here we report the first experimental realization of a quantum interface by building a 5 MHz frequency-uncorrelated SPDC source and reversibly mapping the generated entangled photons into and out of a remote optically thick cold atomic memory using electromagnetically induced transparency. The frequency correlation between the entangled photons is almost fully eliminated with a suitable pump pulse. The storage of a triggered single photon with arbitrary polarization is shown to reach an average fidelity of 92% for 200 ns storage time. Moreover, polarization-entangled photon pairs are prepared, and one of photons is stored in the atomic memory while the other keeps flying. The CHSH Bell's inequality is measured and violation is clearly observed for storage time up to 1 microsecond. This demonstrates the entanglement is stored and survives during the storage. Our work establishes a crucial element to implement scalable all-optical QIP, and thus presents a substantial progress in quantum information science.

Abstract:Polarization-encoded qubits are particularly useful in quantum information tasks due to the easy transportation in a single spatial and temporal mode, the accurate qubit manipulation and the high robustness against decoherence. Reliable storage of polarization-encoded qubits is essential for the construction of large-scale quantum networks. Here we demonstrate a faithful quantum memory for photonic polarization qubits using the noiseless photon echo protocol implemented in a rare-earth-ion doped crystal (151Eu3+:Y2SiO5). Based on a detailed spectroscopic investigation on the 151Eu3+ ions at the site 2 of Y2SiO5 crystals, the qubit memory is implemented using a single piece of crystal which provides a near-uniform absorption for two orthogonal polarization states. A process fidelity of 0.919(24) is obtained for the storage of qubits carried by single-photon-level coherent pulses, which is beyond the maximal fidelity that can be achieved using the classical measure-and-prepare strategy. This compact device shall provide a useful solution for the construction of a long-lived transportable quantum memory and the memory-based quantum networks.

Abstract:This paper presents a new multiattribute decision making method based on intuitionistic fuzzy values. First, we briefly review the concepts of interval-valued intuitionistic fuzzy sets and the Karnik-Mendel algorithms. Then, we propose the interval-valued intuitionistic fuzzy weighted average operator, based on the traditional weighted average method and the Karnik-Mendel algorithms. Then, we propose a fuzzy ranking method for intuitionistic fuzzy values based on likelihood-based comparison relations between intervals. Finally, we present a new method for multiattribute decision making based on the proposed interval-valued intuitionistic fuzzy weighted average operator and the proposed fuzzy ranking method for intuitionistic fuzzy values.

Abstract:Deterministically achieving on-chip photon storage and retrieval is a fundamental challenge for integrated photonics. Moreover, this requirement is increasingly urgent as photon storage and retrieval is crucial to realize truly scalable room-temperature quantum computing. However, most of existing quantum memories integrated on chips must either work at cryogenic temperature or else are strongly coupled with the environment, which hugely reduces the efficiency. Here, we propose an on-chip room-temperature quantum memory comprising three coupled microcavities, which presents an ideal dark state decoupled by a waveguide, thereby allowing on-demand photon storage and retrieval with high efficiency and high fidelity simultaneously. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the single-photon temporal duration can be increased or decreased by a factor of 103, thereby enabling many crucial quantum applications. Our error-robust approach highlights the potential for a solid-state photonic molecule for use as on-chip quantum memory and for optical quantum computing.

Abstract:Quantum repeaters are critical components for distributing entanglement over long distances in presence of unavoidable optical losses during transmission. Stimulated by Duan-Lukin-Cirac-Zoller protocol, many improved quantum-repeater protocols based on quantum memories have been proposed, which commonly focus on the entanglement-distribution rate. Among these protocols, the elimination of multi-photons (multi-photon-pairs) and the use of multimode quantum memory are demonstrated to have the ability to greatly improve the entanglement-distribution rate. Here, we demonstrate the storage of deterministic single photons emitted from a quantum dot in a polarization-maintaining solid-state quantum memory; in addition, multi-temporal-mode memory with $1$, $20$ and $100$ narrow single-photon pulses is also demonstrated. Multi-photons are eliminated, and only one photon at most is contained in each pulse. Moreover, the solid-state properties of both sub-systems make this configuration more stable and easier to be scalable. Our work will be helpful in the construction of efficient quantum repeaters based on all-solid-state devices

Abstract:The quantum internet -- in synergy with the internet that we use today -- promises an enabling platform for next-generation information processing, including exponentially speed-up distributed computation, secure communication, and high-precision metrology. The key ingredients for realizing such a global network are the distribution and storage of quantum entanglement. As ground-based quantum networks are likely to be based on existing fiber networks, telecom-wavelength entangled photons and corresponding quantum memories are of central interest. Recently, $\rm^{167}Er^{3+}$ ions have been identified as a promising candidate for an efficient, broadband quantum memory at telecom wavelength. However, to date, no storage of entangled photons, the crucial step of quantum memory using these promising ions, $\rm^{167}Er^{3+}$, has been reported. Here, we demonstrate the storage and recall of the entangled state of two telecom photons generated from an integrated photonic chip based on a silicon nitride micro-ring resonator. Combining the natural narrow linewidth of the entangled photons and long storage time of $\rm^{167}Er^{3+}$ ions, we achieve storage time of 1.936 $\mu$s, more than 387 times longer than in previous works. Successful storage of entanglement in the crystal is certified by a violation of an entanglement witness with more than 23 standard deviations (-0.234 $\pm$ 0.010) at 1.936 $\mu$s storage time. These results pave the way for realizing quantum networks based on solid-state devices.
