Abstract:Telecom-band integrated quantum memory is an elementary building block for developing quantum networks compatible with fiber communication infrastructures. Towards such a network with large capacity, an integrated multimode photonic quantum memory at telecom band has yet been demonstrated. Here we report a fiber-integrated multimode quantum storage of single photon at telecom band on a laser-written chip. The storage device is a fiber-pigtailed Er3+:LiNbO3 waveguide and allows a storage of up to 330 temporal modes of heralded single photon with 4-GHz-wide bandwidth at 1532 nm and a 167-fold increasing of coincidence detection rate with respect to single mode. Our memory system with all-fiber addressing is performed using telecom-band fiber-integrated and on-chip devices. The results represent an important step for the future quantum networks using integrated photonics devices.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is to realize an integrated multimode photonic quantum memory in the telecommunication band, which is a crucial step in constructing a large - capacity quantum network compatible with the existing fiber - optic communication infrastructure. Specifically, the paper demonstrates multimode quantum storage implemented in a laser - direct - written lithium niobate (Er³⁺:LiNbO₃) waveguide. This memory can store single photons in up to 330 temporal modes at a wavelength of 1532 nm, and the coincidence detection rate is increased by 167 times compared to the single - mode. This achievement is of great significance for future quantum networks using integrated photonic devices, especially in terms of broadband and multimode performance, which are essential for realizing large - scale high - rate quantum networks. The paper experimentally verifies the storage capacity of non - classical light and proves that the non - classical correlation between the stored signal photons and the idler photons is well maintained. In addition, the crosstalk between different temporal modes is measured, and the results show that the crosstalk is negligible, further confirming the effectiveness of this quantum memory. These studies lay the foundation for realizing a high - capacity quantum network compatible with the fiber - optic communication infrastructure.
