Abstract:• A selective Fe 3+ detection method based on FRET between nitrogen doped carbon quantum dots (N-CQDs) and Rhodamine B (RhB) was constructed. • The occurrence of FRET was verified by Förster theory. Both the emission peaks of N-CQDs and RhB show selective detection ability for Fe 3+ ions. • This FRET-based sensing system shows high sensitivity at low Fe 3+ concentration with a limit of detection of 1.47 nM. In this work, a Fe 3+ detection method based on FRET system via nitrogen doped carbon quantum dots (N-CQDs) and Rhodamine B (RhB) was constructed. In this system, N-CQDs served as the donor whereas RhB served as the acceptor. The distance between the chosen D-A pair was determined to be 4.91 nm according to Förster theory. Only the presence of Fe 3+ hampered the FRET process and deactivated the electronic excitation energy of RhB. A dual-signal probe (RhB@N-CQDs) for selective detection of Fe 3+ was developed with a limit of detection of 1.47 nM to overcome the shortcomings of traditional detection methods at low concentrations.

Abstract:Rapid and high efficient synthesis of carbon dots is crucial problem for scalable synthesis and practical biomedical or environmental application. However, synthesis of carbon dots still has the challenges, such as long reaction time of hydrothermal carbonization and low synthetic yield of rapid microwave carbonization. To develop rapid and high-yield synthesis of carbon dots, we proposed acrylamide/chitosan boost the synthetic yield of carbon dots via microwave-hydrothermal carbonization. The reaction time and synthesis yield were 30 min and 45.9%, respectively. As increasing of the carbon-carbon double bonds content, the synthetic yield of carbon dots (45.9%) was improved 5.85 and 4.53 times higher than carbon dots derived from chitosan or acrylamide, respectively. Carbon dots with amino and carboxylic groups exhibited the chelating ability benefiting for detection of ferrous ions, and the detection limit for ferrous ions was as low as 160 nM with the concentration range of 0-50 mu M. Rapid and high yield synthesis carbon dots derived from acrylamide/chitosan provides carbonaceous probe with chelating ability for detection of ferrous ions sensitively and specifically.

Abstract:Citric acid (CA) and N‐[3‐(trimethoxysilyl)propyl]ethylenediamine (TPED) were dissolved in formamide to prepare carbon dots (CDs) by a microwave‐assisted method. The obtained CDs were further modified with 3,5‐dichloro‐2‐hydroxybenzaldehyde. The modified CDs (G‐CDs) showed a new emission peak at 520 nm and a weaker emission peak at 450 nm; thus, a new ratiomeric fluorescence (RF) probe was obtained. The RF probe could be used for sensitively and selectively monitoring of amaranth AM and Fe3+. In this work, a new carbon quantum dots (CDs) was prepared though microwave assisted approach using citric acid anhydrous (CA) and N‐[3‐(Trimethoxysilyl)propyl] ethylenediamine (TPED) as raw materials. However, the CDs was not effective in actual sensing applications, so further modification of CDs was done by 3,5‐Dichloro‐2‐hydroxybenzaldehyde (it was named as G‐CDs). Fortunately, the modified CDs (G‐CDs) has good selectivity for Fe3+ and amaranth. Studies confirmed that Fe3+ could quench the fluorescence of G‐CDs by forming a complex, while the fluorescence quenching mechanism of G‐CDs by amaranth (AM) mainly belonged to the internal filtering effect (IFE). A detection limit of 20.8 nM for Fe3+ and 43.8 nM for AM were achieved. Moreover, the as‐developed G‐CDs probe was also successfully used to detect Fe3+ and amaranth in real samples, and compared with their results by the standard method, hinting that the accuracy and reliability of the probe were highly satisfactory.

Abstract:The carbon quantum dots (CDs) based on carbonization of citric acid and tris(hydroxymethyl)aminome thane (Tris) in glycerinum as fluorescent probes for highly sensitive and selective detection of Fe3+ have been developed. The obtained CDs exhibit an excitation-dependent fluorescence behavior. The most intense fluorescence appears under 340 nm excitation and has a maximum emission peak at 414 nm. The CDs can keep good fluorescence intensity in a wide pH values from 2 to 11. The CDs can be used as highly sensitive and selective detection fluorescent probe of Fe3+, even in real sample analysis the CDs fluorescent probes can be used. (C) 2018 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:The bottom-up approach serves as an efficacious and noteworthy method for the synthesis of carbonized polymer dots (CPDs). In the present investigation, rhenium-doped CPDs (Re-CPDs) were successfully synthesized via a hydrothermal technique employing citric acid, urea, and NH 4 ReO 4 . Subsequent to a comprehensive series of characterizations, Re-CPDs demonstrated an average particle size of 2.67 nm, excitation/emission maxima of 377/461 nm, and an elevated quantum yield of 45.36% at 377 nm excitation. Through the selectivity analysis involving various metal ions, Re-CPDs displayed sensitivity towards Fe 3+ and Mo 6+ ions, with limits of detection (LODs) of 0.02 μM and 0.48 μM, respectively. Furthermore, Re-CPDs exhibited multi-chromatic fluorescence (450–550 nm) under excitation wavelengths (375–430 nm). As a result, by amalgamating Re-CPDs with sucrose, detection patterns capable of generating multi-chromatic fluorescence at excitation wavelengths of 375, 395, and 430 nm, respectively, were successfully devised. In summary, Re-CPDs hold considerable potential as a material for the detection of Fe 3+ and Mo 6+ ions, as well as for anti-counterfeiting ink applications.

Abstract:A new carbon source (mint) is proposed to prepare carbon dots with excellent photostability and strong photobleaching properties by one-step hydrothermal method. The average particle diameter for carbon dots is 5.0 nm, emitting blue luminescence, and the quantum yield is 4.5%. Fluorescence can be obviously quenched in Fe 3+ solution. Further, A method based on fluorescence quenching of carbon dots for detecting Fe 3+ is established, which has a linear range of 0.5∼100 μ M with a detection limit of 0.104 μ M. This may provide an easy and sensitive method for iron detection.

Abstract:In this article, the Fe3+-sensitive carbon dots were obtained by means of a microwave-assisted method using glutamic acid and ethylenediamine as reactants. The carbon dots exhibited selective response to Fe3+ ions in aqueous solution with a turn-off mode, and a good linear relationship was found between (F0-F)/F0 and the concentration of Fe3+ in the range of 8–80 μM. As a result, the as-synthesized carbon dots can be developed as a fluorescent chemosensor for Fe3+ in aqueous solution. Moreover, the carbon dots can be applied as a fluorescent agent for fungal bioimaging since the fungal cells stained by the carbon dots were brightly illuminated on a confocal microscopy excited at 405 nm. Furthermore, an increase in the concentration of intracellular Fe3+ could result in fluorescence quenching of the carbon dots in the fungal cells when incubated in the Tris-HCl buffer solution containing Fe3+. However, due to EDTA might hinder Fe(III) to enter the fungal cells, incubation in Fe(III)-EDTA complex solution exerted negligible effect on the fluorescence of fungal cells labeled by the carbon dots. Therefore, the carbon dots can serve as a potential probe for intracellular imaging of Fe3+ inside fungal cells.

Abstract:We have synthesized nitrogen-doped carbon quantum dots (N-CQDs) via one-step hydrothermal method by using citric acid and urea as carbon sources, In order to solve the agglomeration effect of carbon quantum dots and increase its recognition sites, and then combined the N-CQDs with 3,4,9,10-perylenetetracarboxylic acid (PTCA) to synthesize an self-assembled carbon quantum dots-3,4,9,10-perylenetetracarboxylic acid (N-CQDs/PTCA) composite, which has strong fluorescent properties. The fluorescence spectrum showed that the prepared self-assembled composite (N-CQDs/PTCA) has strong yellow-green light emission near 510 nm. The characterizations such as ultraviolet–visible absorption, X-ray electron spectroscopy, Fourier infrared spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy have confirmed that the N-CQDs and PTCA were combined together successfully. And the prepared self-assembled N-CQDs/PTCA was independent of excitation. It has stable and strong fluorescence properties and can be used as a fluorescent probe. The study also found that in the presence of Fe3+ ions, the fluorescence of self-assembled carbon quantum dots N-CQDs/PTCA will be quenched, and the quenching efficiency had a good linear relationship with the concentration of Fe3+ ions. Therefore, we proposed to use the self-assembled carbon quantum dots N-CQDs/PTCA as a fluorescent probe to detect Fe3+ selectively. The results showed that the method was fast, reliable, obvious detection signal, selective, and not affected by incubation time. The detection limit is 0.041 μM, which provides a new idea for the detection of Fe3+ ions by using self-assembled method and has broad application prospects.

Abstract:Carbon dots (CDs) based fluorimetric sensors have drawn immense attention in detecting metal ions. Among the available works in this direction, more than 70 percentage of the studies report Fe3+ detection, realized through luminescence quenching. Ferric ions are significant species in environmental and biological point of view. Excited state electron transfer from carbon dot to ferric ion is suggested to be the reason behind the quenching. However, no solid proof to demonstrate the electron transfer process is put forth previously. Herein, N-doped blue luminescent carbon dots achieved via hydrothermal carbonization is used to demonstrate the exact mechanism operating in the above-mentioned detection strategy. Carbon dots possessed an average size of 4.9 nm, and exhibit good aqueous solubility aswell as excitation wavelength-dependent emission. Fe3+ mediated luminescence quenching is quantitatively achieved at the micromolar level, with detection limit 1.426 μM. CDs mediated ferric ion reduction is confirmed using the test with potassium ferricyanide. Fe3+ induced luminescence quenching was partially restored in presence of ascorbic acid, enabling sub-micromolar level monitoring of this analyte, with the lowest detection amount 276 nM. Turnbull's Blue method adopted confirms the reducing role of ascorbic acid, which eventually increases the luminescence of the system, evoking the turn-on response.
