Abstract:The Pt-based alloys can moderate the binding energies of oxygenated species on the catalytic surface, endowing the superior catalytic performance towards oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Nevertheless, it is still challenging to explore general methods to synthesize structurally ordered intermetallics with uniform distributions. Herein, the strong metal-support interaction is employed to facilitate the interdiffusion of Pt/M atoms by establishing a tunnel of oxygen vacancy on ultrathin Ti3C2Tx (MXene) sheets, synthesizing the ordered PtFe, PtCo, PtZn, PdFe, PdZn intermetallics loaded onto Ti3C2Tx. Furthermore, the in-situ generation of Ti-O from Ti3C2Tx could be bonded with Pt and forming Pt-O-Ti, resulting in charge redistribution through Pt-O-Ti structure. Theoretical calculations demonstrate that the valuable charge redistribution can be observed at the interface and extended even to at the distance of two nanometers from the interface, which can modulate the Pt-Pt distance, optimize Pt-O binding energy and enhance intrinsic activity towards ORR. The strong coupling interaction between PtFe and Ti3C2Tx containing the titanium oxide layer endows the high stability of the composites. This work not only presents a general synthesis strategy for intermetallics but also provides a new insight that metal-support interaction is essential for the structural evolution of intermetallics on materials with oxygen vacancies. The Ti3C2Tx features plentiful surface terminations and abundant oxygen vacancies, which can electrostatically adsorb metal cations and provide channels to induce the interdiffusion of Pt/Fe atoms, synthesizing the ordered PtFe with small particle sizes. The strong metal-support interaction between PtFe and Ti3C2Tx can induce the charge redistribution through Pt-O-Ti and enhance electrocatalytic performance towards oxygen reduction reaction. image
Constructing Uniform Sub-3 Nm PtZn Intermetallic Nanocrystals Via Atomic Layer Deposition for Fuel Cell Oxygen Reduction

Abstract:The preparation of ultra-small structurally ordered Pt-based intermetallic nanocrystals (< 3 nm) is still challenging due to the sintering during high temperature ordering. We report a strategy to construct size and distribution controllable Pt-based intermetallic nanocrystals based on ultra-thin metal oxide coating on Pt nanoparticles via atomic layer deposition. The area-selective and thickness controllable metal oxide coatings can not only provide metal atoms for alloying, but also prevent the sintering of Pt nanoparticles during subsequently fast ordering reduction. The prepared uniform PtZn intermetallic nanocrystals with the size of 2.50 +/- 0.65 nm achieve outstanding single-cell performance with the mass activity of 0.48 A mg(Pt)(-1) at 0.9 V and 10.42 % loss of mass activity after 30,000 voltage cycles, which is superior to commercial Pt/C. The enhanced activity and durability is attributed to the decreased binding energy of Pt-oxygen intermediates for weakly polarized surface Pt atoms and suppressed electrochemical Ostwald ripening.
Coupling Single‐Atom Sites and Ordered Intermetallic PtM Nanoparticles for Efficient Catalysis in Fuel Cells

Abstract:A gas‐phase ordered alloying strategy is proposed to construct an effective synergistic catalytic system that blends PtM intermetallic compounds (PtM IMC, M = Fe, Cu, and Ni) and dense isolated transition metal sites (M‐N4) on nitrogen‐doped carbon (NC). The obtained Pt1Fe1 IMC cooperating with Fe‐N4 sites achieves outstanding electrocatalytic activity in oxygen reduction and fuel cells. The design of an efficient catalytic system with low Pt loading and excellent stability for the acidic oxygen reduction reaction is still a challenge for the extensive application of proton‐exchange membrane fuel cells. Here, a gas‐phase ordered alloying strategy is proposed to construct an effective synergistic catalytic system that blends PtM intermetallic compounds (PtM IMC, M = Fe, Cu, and Ni) and dense isolated transition metal sites (M‐N4) on nitrogen‐doped carbon (NC). This strategy enables Pt nanoparticles and defects on the NC support to timely trap flowing metal salt without partial aggregation, which is attributed to the good diffusivity of gaseous transition metal salts with low boiling points. In particular, the resulting Pt1Fe1 IMC cooperating with Fe‐N4 sites achieves cooperative oxygen reduction with a half‐wave potential up to 0.94 V and leads to a high mass activity of 0.51 A mgPt−1 and only 23.5% decay after 30 k cycles, both of which exceed DOE 2025 targets. This strategy provides a method for reducing Pt loading in fuel cells by integrating Pt‐based intermetallics and single transition metal sites to produce an efficient synergistic catalytic system.

Abstract:The cost and endurance anxiety about proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) has prompted the rapid development of platinum-based (Pt-based) oxygen reduction electrocatalysts towards smaller particle sizes, higher durability and alloying. However, well-balanced these advanced trends by a simple approach is difficult in practice, because the existing solutions are problematic in removing the protective organic coating or oxide shell that preventing the high-temperature agglomeration of Pt-based nanocrystals, or broadening the size range of Pt-based nanocrystals which caused by the heterogeneous distribution of heteroatom anchor points on supports. With a self-developed strategy that based on the atomic layer deposition (ALD), we have addressed these problems in two aspects. One is directly loading size and distribution controllable Pt nanocrystals on diverse supports, and another is indirectly depositing easily removed ultra-thin metal oxide coating with dual functions on prefabricated ultrasmall Pt nanocrystals to restrain their sintering effect during high temperature ordering. By controlling the temperature and pulse time of ALD, we successfully synthesized ultrasmall (< 2 nm) Pt nanocrystals on surface inactive TiC nanoparticles and nanowires. These two new electrocatalysts exhibited comparable oxygen reduction activity and durability on par with commercial Pt/C with lower Pt loading. And using this strategy, about 1 nm ZnO coating on Pt nanocrystals was performed to construct uniform PtZn intermetallic nanocrystals with the ultrasmall size of 2.50 ± 0.65 nm and excellent stability for oxygen reduction reaction. The mass activity of PtZn intermetallic nanocrystals reaches to 0.60 A mgPt -1 at 0.9 V (6 times than commercial Pt/C) and only 13 mV decrease of half-wave potential after 30000 cycles of accelerated durability testing rivaling the most recently reported PtZn catalysts. Ultrasmall sizes and excellent features of our Pt and Pt-based intermetallic nanocrystals are all attributed to the accurate control of ALD and could be a promising method applying to other Pt-based intermetallic nanocrystals.
Synthesis of Structurally Stable and Highly Active PtCo3 Ordered Nanoparticles Through an Easily Operated Strategy for Enhanced Oxygen Reduction Reaction

Abstract:Constructing robust and cost-effective Pt-based electrocatalysts with an easily operated strategy remains a crucial obstacle to fuel cell applications. Conventional Pt-based catalysts suffer from high Pt content and an arduous synthetic process. Herein, through the spray dehydration method and annealing treatment, facile producible synthesis of a small-sized (5.2 nm) low-Pt (10.5 wt %) ordered PtCo3/C catalyst (O-PtCo3/C) for oxygen reduction reaction is reported. The fast spray evaporation rate contributes to small size and uniform nucleation of nanoparticles (NPs) on carbon support. O-PtCo3/C-600 exhibits efficient electrocatalytic performance with mass activity (MA) 6.0-fold and specific activity 3.9-fold higher than commercial Pt/C. The ordered chemical structure generates superior stability with merely 3.5% decay in MA after 10,000 potential cycles. Density functional theory calculations reveal that the enhanced catalytic performance originates from rational modification of d-band through strain and ordering effect and accompanying weaker adsorption of intermediate OH. This work highlights the potentials of low-Pt PtM3-type ordered NPs for prospective fuel cell cathodic catalysis. The proposed facile and practical synthetic strategy also shows promising prospects for preparing effective Pt-based electrocatalysts.
Facile Synthesis of Structurally Ordered Low-Pt-loading Pd–Pt–Fe Nanoalloys with Enhanced Electrocatalytic Performance for Oxygen Reduction Reaction

Abstract:Developing electrocatalysts with high-Pt-utilization efficiency and appropriate surface oxygen affinity through a facile and scalable route is urgently needed for proton exchange membrane fuel cells. Here, SPD-annealing strategy is demonstrated to prepare ordered low-Pt-loading Pd-Pt-Fe nanoalloys with an average particle size of less than 5 nm and excellent electrocatalytic performance. Furthermore, the ORR performances of Pd-Pt-Fe/C nanoalloy catalysts are rationally modified by means of both precise composition control and structural transformation. With an optimal component proportion, the prepared Pd0.75Pt0.25 Fe/C catalyst exhibits the most excellent intrinsic activity due to the synergistic interaction of lattice strain and ligand effect. Benefiting from the compressive strain effect induced by the relatively tight arrangement of the ordered structure, the adsorption energy of the intermediate oxygen-containing species is effectively weakened, enabling the Pd0.75Pt0.25 Fe/C to obtain enhanced ORR catalytic performance in acidic condition. Notably, compared with the disordered Pd0.75Pt0.25 Fe/C, the ordered Pd-0.75 Pt-0.25 Fe/C shows an extremely superior stability of 98.5% mass activity retention after 10 000 cycles. Ordered Intermetallic PtCu Catalysts Made from Pt@Cu Core/Shell Structures for Oxygen Reduction Reaction

Abstract:Platinum-based ordered intermetallic compounds are promising low-Pt catalysts toward the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) for high-performance fuel cells. However, the synthesis of ordered intermetallic catalysts usually requires high-temperature annealing to overcome the energy barrier for atom diffusion, which leads to inevitable sintering of catalysts and greatly reduced mass-specific activity. Herein, we developed a new strategy to synthesize PtCu-ordered intermetallic catalysts by the generation of the Pt@Cu core/shell nanoparticles (Pt@Cu NPs) by Pt-assisted H2 reduction of Cu2+ with subsequent annealing at 500-1000 °C. Compared to the commonly used wet-impregnation method, the core/shell structure starts to form ordered PtCu alloys at a lower annealing temperature (500 °C). The Pt@Cu core/shell structure avoids the necessary process of Cu atoms diffusing to Pt NPs across the carbon supports occurred during high-temperature annealing in the wet-impregnation method, which ensures the formation of PtCu NPs with higher ordering degree while annealing at the same temperature. The highly ordered small-sized PtCu catalysts prepared by the core/shell strategy exhibit higher mass activity and specific activity compared to those prepared by the wet-impregnation method. Moreover, a positive correlation between the ORR activity and the ordering degree of the intermetallic PtCu NPs is identified, which could be associated with the increase of compressive strain with the ordering degree.

Abstract:The development of ordered Pt-based intermetallic compounds is an effective way to optimize the electronic characteristics of Pt and its disordered alloys, inhibit the loss of transition metal elements, and prepare fuel cell catalysts with high activity and long-term durability for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). This paper reviews the structure–activity characteristics, research advances, problems, and improvements in Pt-based intermetallic compound fuel cell catalysts for the ORR. First, the structural characteristics and performance advantages of Pt-based intermetallic compounds are analyzed and explained. Second, starting with 3d transition metals such as Fe, Co, and Ni, whose research achievements are common, the preparation process and properties of Pt-based intermetallic compound catalysts for the ORR are introduced in detail according to element types. Third, in view of preparation problems, improvements in the preparation processes of Pt-based intermetallic compounds are also summarized in regard to four aspects: coating to control the crystal size, doping to promote ordering transformation, constructing a “Pt skin” to improve performance, and anchoring and confinement to enhance the interaction between the crystal and support. Finally, by analyzing the research status of Pt-based intermetallic compound catalysts for the ORR, prospective research directions are suggested.Graphical abstract

Abstract:Platinum-based atomically ordered alloys (i.e., intermetallic compounds) have distinct advantages over disordered solid solution counterparts in boosting the cathodic oxygen-reduction reaction (ORR) in proton-exchange-membrane fuel cells. Nevertheless, the pivotal role of ordering degree of intermetallic catalysts in promoting ORR performance has been ignored heavily so far, probably owing to the lack of synthetic routes for controlling the ordering degree, especially for preparing highly ordered intermetallic catalysts. Herein, a family of intermetallic PtFe catalysts with similar particle size of 3-4 nm but varied ordering degree in a wide range of 10-70% are prepared. After constructing the PtFe/Pt core/shell structure with around 3 Pt-layer skin, a positive correlation between the ordering degree of the intermetallic catalysts and their ORR activity and durability is identified. Notably, the highly ordered PtFe/Pt catalyst exhibits a high mass activity of 0.92 A mg(Pt)(-1) at 0.9 ViR-corrected as cathode catalyst in H-2-O-2 fuel cell, with only 24% loss after accelerated durability tests. The ordering degree-dependent performance can be ascribed to the compressive strain effect induced by the intermetallic PtFe core with smaller lattice parameters, and the more thermodynamically stable intermetallic structure compared to disordered alloys.

Highly stable and active catalyst in fuel cells through surface atomic ordering

Abstract:Shape-controlled alloy nanoparticle catalysts have been shown to exhibit improved performance in the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in liquid half-cells. However, translating the success to catalyst layers in fuel cells faces challenges due to the more demanding operation conditions in membrane electrode assembly (MEA). Balancing durability and activity is crucial. Here, we developed a strategy that limits the atomic diffusion within surface layers, fostering the phase transition and shape retention during thermal treatment. This enables selective transformation of platinum-iron nanowire surfaces into intermetallic structures via atomic ordering at a low temperature. The catalysts exhibit enhanced MEA stability with 50% less Fe loss while maintaining high catalytic activity comparable to that in half-cells. Density functional calculations suggest that the ordered intermetallic surface stabilizes morphology against rapid corrosion and improves the ORR activity. The surface engineering through atomic ordering presents potential for practical application in fuel cells with shape-controlled Pt-based alloy catalysts.

Abstract:Coupling the structure advantages of platinum (Pt)-based active composites, transition-metal single sites, and porous carbon is highly desirable to reduce the Pt usage in proton-exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) but remains a great challenge. Herein, we report the in situ construction of synergistic oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysts with intermetallic PtZn alloy nanoparticles confined in mesoporous carbon doped with atomic Co-N-4 and Zn-N-4 moieties. Mesoporous carbon doped with Co-N-4 and Zn-N-4 moieties could be fabricated by carbonization of CoSO4-doped ZIF-8 precursors and SO42- has been verified to be responsible for the formation of mesopores and defects with narrow pore size distribution. More importantly, systematical characterizations revealed that Pt could in situ alloy with Zn-N-4 sites, which could effectively prevent the agglomeration of Pt during high-temperature treatment, leading to the formation of uniform and well-dispersed PtZn nanoparticles with a mean diameter of similar to 3.06 nm. The as-synthesized PtZn@Meso/Zn1Co1/NC shows an excellent mass activity of 490 mA mg(Pt)(-1) @ 0.9 V as well as excellent durability with an activity retention of 79% after 20,000 potential cycles in 0.1 M HClO4, showing that the nanoarchitecture of the mesopore-encased PtZn alloy has a high resistance to migration due to the pore confinement effect and anchoring effect of the support. In addition to developing robust Pt-based catalysts, this study also lays out a straightforward strategy for designing synergistic catalysts, which might have far-reaching implications for fuel cells and beyond.
Metal bond strength regulation enables large-scale synthesis of intermetallic nanocrystals for practical fuel cells

Abstract:Structurally ordered L10-PtM (M = Fe, Co, Ni and so on) intermetallic nanocrystals, benefiting from the chemically ordered structure and higher stability, are one of the best electrocatalysts used for fuel cells. However, their practical development is greatly plagued by the challenge that the high-temperature (>600 °C) annealing treatment necessary for realizing the ordered structure usually leads to severe particle sintering, morphology change and low ordering degree, which makes it very difficult for the gram-scale preparation of desirable PtM intermetallic nanocrystals with high Pt content for practical fuel cell applications. Here we report a new concept involving the low-melting-point-metal (M' = Sn, Ga, In)-induced bond strength weakening strategy to reduce Ea and promote the ordering process of PtM (M = Ni, Co, Fe, Cu and Zn) alloy catalysts for a higher ordering degree. We demonstrate that the introduction of M' can reduce the ordering temperature to extremely low temperatures (≤450 °C) and thus enable the preparation of high-Pt-content (≥40 wt%) L10-Pt-M-M' intermetallic nanocrystals as well as ten-gram-scale production. X-ray spectroscopy studies, in situ electron microscopy and theoretical calculations reveal the fundamental mechanism of the Sn-facilitated ordering process at low temperatures, which involves weakened bond strength and consequently reduced Ea via Sn doping, the formation and fast diffusion of low-coordinated surface free atoms, and subsequent L10 nucleation. The developed L10-Ga-PtNi/C catalysts display outstanding performance in H2-air fuel cells under both light- and heavy-duty vehicle conditions. Under the latter condition, the 40% L10-Pt50Ni35Ga15/C catalyst delivers a high current density of 1.67 A cm-2 at 0.7 V and retains 80% of the current density after extended 90,000 cycles, which exceeds the United States Department of Energy performance metrics and represents among the best cathodic electrocatalysts for practical proton-exchange membrane fuel cells.
Enhanced O2 Reduction on Atomically Thin Pt-based Nanoshells by Integrating Surface Facet, Interfacial Electronic, and Substrate Stabilization Effects

Abstract:To fully realize the commercial viability of Pt in fuel cells, the usage of scarce Pt must be reduced while the activity and durability in O-2 reduction reaction (ORR) must be enhanced. Here we report a metallic stack design achieving these goals for ORR, based on atomically precise materials synthesis. Au@Pd@Pt nanostructures with atomically thin Pt shells and high-index surfaces form an excellent platform for integrating the effects of electronic structures, surface facets, and substrate stabilization to boost ORR performance. Au@Pd@Pt trisoctahedrons (TOH) achieve mass activity 6.1 times higher than that of commercial Pt/C and dramatically enhanced durability beyond 1.0 V vs. a reversible hydrogen electrode in oxidation potential. Meanwhile, Pt comprises only 3.2% of the nanostructures. To further improve the ORR activity and demonstrate the versatility of our strategy, we implement the same design in PtNi alloy electrocatalysts. The Au@Pd@PtNi TOHs exhibit mass activity 14.3 times higher than that of commercial Pt/C as well as excellent durability. This work demonstrates an alternative strategy for fabricating high-performance and low-cost catalysts, and highlights the importance of simultaneous surface and interfacial engineering with atomic precision in designing catalysts.
Highly dispersed L12-Pt3Fe intermetallic particles supported on single atom Fe-Nx-Cy active sites for enhanced activity and durability towards oxygen reduction

Abstract:Highly active and durable oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysts with sufficient activity and stability of Pt are beneficial for the commercialization of proton exchange membrane fuel cells. Here we report an effective approach to prepare a composite catalyst comprising of ordered L12-Pt3Fe intermetallic nanoparticles interact with single atom Fe-Nx-Cy active sites. The addition of Fe and the confinement effect of hierarchical porous structure limit the growth of intermetallic particle size (around 2.5 nm). The ligand effect of the electron transfer from Fe to Pt and the synergistic interaction between L12-Pt3Fe and Fe-Nx-Cy work together to reduce oxygen intermediates adsorption and improve kinetics process. Experimentally, the L12-Pt3Fe/CFe-N-C catalyst shows high mass activity and specific activity at 1.010 A/mgPt and 1.166 mA/cm2, respectively, which are 5.8 and 5.1 times higher than those of commercial Pt/C (0.174 A/mgPt and 0.230 mA/cm2). Thanks to the more stable L12 structure, L12-Pt3Fe/CFe-N-C exhibits better durability (14 mV E1/2 loss of L12-Pt3Fe/CFe-N-C and 33 mV E1/2 loss of commercial Pt/C) after 30,000 cycles accelerated stress tests. The strategy to design and prepare small particle Pt-based intermetallic alloys coordinated with M-N-C active sites provides a new direction to obtain low-cost and easily prepared effective ORR catalysts.

Abstract:Achieving efficient oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is of prime importance for fuel cell commercialization. Herein, a hollow nanostructure of PtCo alloy with an average particle size of only ~5 nm is prepared through a simplistic ambient oxygen-involved surface engineering strategy. The electrochemical evaluation of such catalyst confirms an initial mass activity (MA) at 0.9 V of 0.56 and 0.48 A mgPt−1, based on rotating disk electrode and membrane electrode assembly test, respectively, succesfully breaking previous perceptions of a very huge gap between half- and full-cell MA. After 30,000 cycles of accelerated stress test, the catalyst demonstrates durable cathodic reaction in fuel cells, satisfying the US Department of Energy stability standards. We discover that an efficient ORR electrocatalysis originates from the optimized surface strain and favorable coordination environments in the designed catalyst.

Abstract:Platinum (Pt) is a critical element in the electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) occurring in the cathode of polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). To address the Pt abundance issue and to enhance Pt ORR activity, Pt is often alloyed with another transition metal M (i.e., M=Fe, Co, and Ni, etc). (1-3) Generally, the atoms in PtM alloys are randomly distributed in the Pt fcc lattice. In the corrosive working environment of a PEMFC cathode, these transition metals are rapidly etched, thus leading to the reduced catalytic activity and stability. In these regards, ordered intermetallic PtM alloys are considered as one of the most promising candidates to achieve both high activity and stability in practical fuel cell applications. (4) The transition metals in ordered intermetallic PtM alloys occupy specific sites, and are stabilized by both metallic and ionic bonding. Ordered intermetallic structures are formed via high temperature (>600 °C) annealing of disordered PtM alloys, as the atomic ordering is a thermodynamically driven process. However, the high temperature annealing inevitably leads to the migration and agglomeration of the catalyst nanoparticles forming randomly alloyed particles with poor dispersion and broad size distributions, due to weak adhesions to the carbon support under typical synthesis conditions. To prevent this coalescence during annealing, protective coating of the nanoparticles with inorganic shells or physical barriers has been suggested. (5-10) However, these studies were limited to the synthesis of intermetallic nanoparticles on carbon supports at low metal loadings, or require an additional step of removing the protective coating layer from the surface of the nanoparticles to expose the active sites. Thus, it is essential to develop a general approach that can produce highly dispersed, structurally ordered nanoparticles while achieving controls over the size and size distribution. We propose to use the functionalized carbon supports to control PtM alloy nanoparticle size and prevent nanoparticles from aggregating during the high temperature annealing through improving the metal-support interactions. A strong electrostatic attraction between the negative charge from Pt precursor (PtCl6 2 -) and positive charge from the amino groups (C-NH2+) on the surface of the functionalized carbon will be established during the wet impregnation synthesis. Such bonds will help to make the PtM nanoparticle size smaller and more uniformly distributed over the surface of support. The ordered intermetallic 30 wt.% PtCo/KB-NH2 catalyst demonstrated an average size of 2.7 nm and uniform size distribution. In addition, 30 wt.% PtCo/KB-NH2 catalyst exhibited a mass activity of 535 A/gPt (H2/O2) and a rated power density of 1.05 W/cm2 at 0.67 V (H2/air), meeting/exceeding the DOE targets. (1) V. Abstract:Synthesis of electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) with not only prominent electrocatalytic performance but also a low amount of Pt is the urgent challenge in the popularization of fuel cells. In this work, through a facile synthetic strategy of spray dehydration on a solid surface and annealing process, we demonstrate the first manufacture of quaternary structurally ordered PtM3(M = transition metal) intermetallic nanoparticles (NPs), Pt(Fe, Co, Ni)(3), in order to lower the content of Pt. The atomic contents of Pt, Fe, Co, and Ni are equal and the chemical structure of Pt(Fe, Co, Ni)(3) is a cubic L1(2)-ordered structure. L1(2)-Pt(Fe, Co, Ni)(3)/C electrocatalysts exhibit enhanced electrocatalytic performance toward ORR with mass activity (MA) 6.6 times higher than the commercial Pt/C and a minimal loss of 17% in MA and 1.5% loss in specific activity (SA) after 10 000 potential cycles at 0.9 V. Furthermore, the stability behavior is confirmed to be attributed to the coaction of particle sizes and the ordering effect. Compared with traditional Pt-based electrocatalysts in the stoichiometric forms of Pt3M and NM, L1(2)-Pt(Fe, Co, Ni)(3) intermetallic NPs exhibit excellent performance and higher cost effectiveness. Moreover, this work also proposes a facile and effective synthetic strategy for manufacturing multicomponent Pt-based electrocatalysts for ORR.
Fate of skin allografts in normal mice injected with antigraft strain globulin in relation to the IgG1 and IgG2 class of the antibodies.

Abstract:A recent study of the effects on skin allografts of alloantibody-containing globulins of the mouse indicated that such globulins can have a variety of effects on the fate of the grafts, ranging from accelerated rejection to prolonged retention. We have also shown evidence of the presence in such globulins of anti-graft strain antibodies of IgG2 class by complement-dependent reactions of such globulin, and of antibodies of IgG1 class by the finding that the titres of these reactions were elevated on treatment of the globulin with anti-mouse IgG1 serum. Further, it was shown that the increasing titre of these antibodies on treatment with increasing amounts of the anti-IgG1 serum reached a plateau level which is the actual titre of an IgG2 anti-graft strain antibody, such as the suppressive antibody, in these preparations. The difference between the plateau level and the original level of suppressive titre was therefore considered to provide a measure of the competing, IgG1-class, antibody. The present study has examined the relation, in anti-graft strain ascitic fluid globulin preparations, between this measure of relative content of anti-graft strain antibody of IgG1 class and the effects of these globulins on the fate of skin allografts. Of globulin preparations which had caused various effects on the skin grafts, portions were treated by adding increasing amounts of anti-mouse IgG1, removing the resulting precipitates, and testing the supernatant fluids for suppressive titre, to determine the plateau level of titre attained. All pools which caused accelerated rejection of BALB/c skin grafts showed increases from original to plateau titres in the lowest range, log2 0.1–1.2; all those causing prolonged retention showed such differences in the highest range observed, log2 2.1–3.1. Globulins giving partial effects of accelerated rejection, or negative results, showed corresponding intermediate of ranges the increases in titre produced by the anti-IgG1 serum. For a test of this relation, use was made of an earlier observation of a failure to produce accelerated rejection by later-day globulins of mice which had, at 11–13 days, produced rejecting globulins. The failure to cause accelerated rejection by such later-day globulins was confirmed, and these later globulins also showed consistently greater increases of titre from original to plateau level. Similarly, of mice whose 11–13-day globulin pools had caused no significant difference from normal rejection time, later globulins showed, again, greater differences between original and plateau titres than the 11–13-day globulins, and again a difference in effect on skin graft rejection, in this case a significant prolongation of graft retention, in comparison with the negative results given by the 11–13-day pools.
Leaching- and Sintering-Resistant Hollow or Structurally Ordered Intermetallic PtFe Alloy Catalysts for Oxygen Reduction Reactions

Abstract:Carbon supported Pt-based alloy materials that have been developed for proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) are vulnerable to deactivation due to the loss of non-noble metal components (leaching) or detachment, migration and aggregation of active nanoparticles (sintering). Until now some methods have been developed to inhibit leaching or sintering individually. However, a route able to avoid leaching and sintering simultaneously is still lacking. Herein, we develop a thermally driven interfacial diffusion alloying route that allows for the direct evolution of solid Pt nanoparticles (NPs) supported on carbon (Pt/C) into a Pt-skin-like hollow PtFe alloy or a structurally ordered intermetallic PtFe alloy, together with in situ encapsulation of PtFe alloy NPs with a thin layer porous nitrogen-doped carbon (NC) shell. The robust NC shells not only effectively prevent Pt-based NPs from detachment, migration, and aggregation during accelerated durability tests but also allow smoother access of electrolyte to the Pt surface, thus allowing the catalysts to well preserve their high catalytic activity. The well-defined shape and atomic arrangement of PtFe alloy NPs exhibit over 600% increase in mass activity and specific activity when compared with that of the pristine Pt/C catalyst. Stability tests confirm that the ordered PtFe alloy is more electrochemically stable than the disordered hollow PtFe alloy and Pt/C catalysts due to its ordered atomic arrangement and the robust NC shell.
