Abstract:A simple turn-off fluorescent probe, 5-(diethylamino)-2-(hydrazonomethyl)phenol (DHP), is designed and synthesized for the sensitive and selective detection of Cu 2+ . The bright green fluorescence of DHP is quenched after the addition of Cu 2+ . The probe DHP exhibits good anti-interference performance against Cu 2+ in the presence of multiple metal ions. The fluorescence intensity of DHP (10 μM) at 522 nm is well linearized with the Cu 2+ concentration at 0–5 μM, and it has a detection limit of 0.29 nM ( R 2 = 0.9949). The complexation ratio of the probe DHP to Cu 2+ is 2 : 1 and the complexation constant is 3.44 × 10 4 M −1 ( R 2 = 0.9974). In addition, the probe DHP can be recovered using EDTA and Cu 2+ can be effectively monitored at pH 5–11, with good results in dipstick experiments and actual water samples. HepG-2 cells remained viable in excess of 90% after being exposed to DHP (50 μM) for 24 h, which demonstrates the extremely low toxicity of DHP, and it can be used for in vivo cell imaging.

Abstract:A new Schiff-base fluorescence probe CS containing benzimidazole and coumarin fluorophores was synthesized and characterized by NMR, IR and ESI-MS. Fluorescence and absorption spectra show the unique changes in the presence of Hg2+ and Cu2+. Hg2+ induces a remarkable fluorescence enhancement and results in mercury-promoted hydrolysis of a mercury-CS complex to convert the imine group to the aldehyde group. Cu2+ leads to a colorimetric change from colorless to pale yellow and causes formation of a copper-CS complex. Thus, CS can act as a fluorescent chemodosimeter for Hg2+ and a naked-eye chemosensor Cu2+. The cell imaging experiments for Hg2+ show a slow enhancement of a bright blue fluorescence with increasing incubation time, while Cu2+ instantly quenches the fluorescence and then the fluorescence intensity has no further change by extending the incubation time. Therefore, the probe CS shows its potential application for simultaneous differential detection of Hg2+ and Cu2+ in living cells based on the fluorescence response time. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:A new diketopyrrolopyrrole amphiphile, namely 2-(2-(2-methoxyethoxy)-ethyl)- 3,6-di(pyridin-2-yl)-2,5-dihydropyrrolo[3,4-c]pyrrole-1,4-dione (PyDPP), is designed and synthesized as a novel ratiometric/fluorescent chemosensor for Cu2+/Hg2+. PyDPP forms soluble loose nanoaggregates by molecular self-assembly in water and maintains intrinsic bright fluorescence and color. The UV–vis absorption spectra data show that PyDPP nanoaggregates exhibits high sensitivity and selectivity toward Cu2+/Hg2+ among other metal cations in PBS (pH 7.4) solution. The reaction mechanism involved in PyDPP-Cu/Hg was investigated by MS, XPS and DFT calculation. The limit of detection of the present nanosensor for Cu2+ is calculated to be 87 nM. This research provides another view in the design and application of FONs nanosensor for heavy metal ions detection.

Abstract:Improving the sensitivity of the fluorescence method is crucial in biosensor fields. In this study, an ultrasensitive and excellent selectivity method was developed for the detection of trace Cu2+ ions using 3-mercaptopropionic acid capped CdSSe/CdS/ZnS quantum dots (MPA-CdSSe/CdS/ZnS QDs) as a fluorescent probe. Through energy band engineering to optimize the interior inorganic structure and passivate the surface defects, the photoluminescence quantum yield of the MPA-CdSSe/CdS/ZnS QDs in aqueous solution had as high as 70 %. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM) analysis revealed the prepared CdSSe/CdS/ZnS QDs were cubic zinc blende structure with average diameter 7.2 nm. Further, the fluorescence of the MPA-CdSSe/CdS/ZnS QDs was significantly quenched by the Cu2+ with fast response time through an efficient photo-induced electron transfer (PET) progress. By optimizing the thickness of CdS shell, the MPA-CdSSe/CdS/ZnS QDs probe with appropriate CdS shell thickness exhibited excellent linear linearity and sensitivity for the detection of Cu2+ ions with limit of detection as low as 0.05 nM. Additionally, ions interference experiments demonstrated the good selectivity of the probe towards Cu2+. Furthermore, this sensing system could also be applied to the measurement of Cu2+ ions in real water samples with satisfactory recoveries. This work provided new insights to design and synthesize high-performance QDs-based fluorescence probes with controllable exciton emission behavior for their applications in biosensor and biological fields.

Abstract:A fluorescent chemosensor for fast detection of Cu 2+ ion has been established based on a novel pyridine-appended half-salamo-based compound. The chemosensor PHS is easy to synthesize, eco-friendly and cost effective. It demonstrates an excellent selectivity and sensitivity towards Cu 2+ ion in the mixed DMF : H 2 O (9 : 1, V / V, pH = 7.2) solution by change in fluorescence intensity. Calculated through the Origin Program, relevant experimental results were obtained, such as the limit of detection (LOD), the limit of quantification (LOQ) and the association constant ( K a ). Compared with other reported probes, this probe showed a lower detection limit and provided a relatively simple and effective method for the detection of Cu 2+ . In addition, plausible mechanism for the interaction of the probe PHS with Cu 2+ was proposed according to the fluorescence titration experiments, Job's plot, and DFT calculations.

Abstract:Trace Cu2+ ions in aqueous solution were detected with ultra-sensitivity and excellent selectivity by using CdSe quantum dots (QDs) with enhanced fluorescence properties as fluorescent reporters. CdSe QDs were first synthesized by using aqueous route with 3-mercaptopropionic acid (3-MPA) as capping agent. By further thermal-annealing the as-prepared 3-MPA capped CdSe QDs in the presence of imidazole (IM) under nitrogen atmosphere at 70°C, the fluorescence quantum yields of CdSe QDs in aqueous solution could be dramatically enhanced to be ∼10.9%. These CdSe QDs with enhanced fluorescence exhibited fast fluorescence response (within 1min), ultra-sensitivity and excellent selectivity toward Cu2+ ions over other metal ions in aqueous solution. The Cu2+-induced aggregation of CdSe QDs led to the significant fluorescence quenching of the CdSe QDs. The limit of detection (LOD) calculated for Cu2+ could reach as low as 0.13–0.16ppb (2.0–2.5nM). The co-existence of other metal ions did not interfere with the sensing of trace Cu2+ ions in aqueous solution.

Abstract:A fluorescent probe based on a glycyl-L-tyrosine-modified dansyl derivative (D-GT) is designed and synthesized. D-GT demonstrated great detection performance toward Cu2+ in an aqueous solution. Fluorescence quenching occurred due to the coordination of Cu2+ with D-GT. The sensitive detection of D-GT to Cu2+ was applied in aqueous solution within a wide pH span (6-12). A 1:1 coordinate stoichiometric way and an association constant of 6.47 × 104 M-1 between D-GT and Cu2+ were determined. The measured detection limit for Cu2+ in HEPES buffer solution (10 mM, pH 7.4) was 0.69 μM. The probe displayed an appropriate sensitivity toward Cu2+ in real drinking water samples and living cells, which reveals the potential applications of D-GT in complicated environments.

Abstract:An aniline-functionalized naphthalene dialdehyde Schiff base fluorescent probe L with aggregation-induced enhanced emission (AIEE) characteristics was synthesized via a simple one-step condensation reaction and exhibited excellent sensitivity and selectivity towards copper(II) ions in aqueous media with a fluorescence “ turn-off ” phenomenon. The detection limit of the probe is 1.64 × 10−8 mol·L−1. Furthermore, according to the results of the UV-vis/fluorescence titrations, Job’s plot method and 1H-NMR titrations, a 1:2 stoichiometry was identified. The binding constant between L and Cu2+ was calculated to be Ka = 1.222 × 103. In addition, the AIEE fluorescent probe L could be applied to detection in real water samples with satisfactory recoveries in the range 99.10–102.90% in lake water and 98.49–102.37% in tap water.

Abstract:A highly selective Schiff-type fluorescent probe (SY) with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) characteristics was synthesized based on salicylaldehyde derivatives. With increasing water content, it exhibits good sensitivity and interference resistance for the detection of Cu 2+ in mixed solvents (DMSO/H 2 O, v/ v = 3:2), and uses a fluorescence burst mechanism to rapidly analyze Cu 2+ ions in aqueous media with a detection limit as low as 3.98 × 10 −8 M, which is well below the permissible standard for Cu 2+ (∼20 μM) in drinking water (WHO). Importantly, the probe has been successfully applied to the determination of Cu 2+ in real water samples with good reversibility and recoveries ranging from 99.3% to 106.6% in tap water, and can also be used for the detection of Cu 2+ ions under 365 nm UV light. In addition, the coordination pattern of the probe with Cu 2+ was evaluated by mass spectrometry and working curves, and the stoichiometry of the probe and Cu 2+ ions was determined to be 2:1. In addition, density functional theory (DFT) was performed to help understand the electronic nature of SY and Cu 2+ complexation and chelation induced quenching mechanism.

Abstract:To monitor Cu2+ efficiently, a kind of D-π-A-π-D conjugated 3,5-di-(2-hydroxyl naphthaldehyde)-iminyl triazole (HNIT) was developed, using triazole as electron acceptor, 2-hydroxyl naphthaline as electron donor, -C=N- as bridging group. The proposed HNIT possessed superior UV-vis and fluorescent spectral property with high molar absorption coefficient of 2.313×104 L·mol−1·cm−1 and fluorescence quantum yield of 36.2 %. Trace Cu2+ could exclusively alter its UV-vis and fluorescent property with clear color change. Under the optimized conditions, a high-performance fluorescent and ratio-metric colorimetric detection of Cu2+ based on HNIT was efficient, with low detection limits of 3.3×10−8 mol∙L−1 (S/N=3) and 9.6×10−8 mol∙L−1 (S/N=3) respectively. It well satisfied with the safe value of 31.5 μM Cu2+ in drinking water recommended by World Health Organization (WHO). When applied for detection of Cu2+ in real environmental samples, the recovery was among 97.5 %~105.2 %. The recognition mechanism for HNIT to Cu2+ was confirmed to be quite stable 6-membered rings between electron-deficient Cu2+ and electron-rich N and O atoms in HNIT with 1:2 chemical stoichiometry of HNIT to Cu2+.

Abstract:Fluorescent sensor has demonstrated to be a facile and effective method to detect heavy metal ions owing to its unique characteristics such as simplicity, ease of operation and cost-effectiveness. In this work, a novel fluorescent probe with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) feature that contains an amide ligand base on the tetraphenylethylene (TPE) dye was designed and successfully synthesized. The utilization of the AIE-active fluorescent probe (named as FDPA) for detection of Cu2+ in aqueous solution has also been examined. We demonstrated that the resultant AIE-active molecule displays amphiphilic property and can self-assemble in aqueous solution with remarkable enhancement of fluorescent intensity owing to its AIE feature. The detection limit of probe for Cu2+ determination is 6.11 × 10-9 M and shows excellent selectivity in the presence of competitive ions. This work provides a useful route to overcome the fluorescence quenching of conventional fluorescent probes in aqueous solution and an elegant way to prepare fluorescent probes with better fluorescence properties.

Abstract:Among the various essential trace elements for living organisms, the copper (Cu 2+ ) ions are the most important. However, Cu 2+ ions are vital for the human body and are associated with necessary physiological processes; insufficient or excessiveness has many hazardous effects on our bodies. In the present contribution, strategically, we have introduced a julolidine-coupled azine-based, 9,9'-((1E,1'E)-hydrazine-1,2-diylidene bis(methanylylidene)) bis(1,2,3,5,6,7-hexahydropyrido [3,2,1-ij] quinolin-8-ol) ( HDBQ ) reversible chromo-fluorogenic probe for specific detection of Cu 2+ ions. Probe HDBQ exhibits observable orange colorimetric change from yellow, which is visible to the naked eye in daylight. The highly green fluorescence HDBQ becomes a non-fluorescent one with the incorporation of Cu 2+ ions. Interestingly, the colorimetric change and non-fluorescent HDBQ -Cu 2+ complex reverse to the original HDBQ in the presence of ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA). The detection and quantification limit of HDBQ towards the detection of Cu 2+ ions is found to be in the μM range, which is much lower than the limit (31.5 μM) recommended by WHO. We have also performed a colorimetric and fluorometric paper-based test strips-based experiment employing HDBQ for real-time on-site detection of Cu 2+ ions. Using the reversibility characteristics of HDBQ for the consecutive addition of Cu 2+ and EDTA , we have established the INHIBIT molecular logic gate. The present report brings a precise and sensitive probe for the detection of Cu 2+ ions in real environmental and biological samples.

Abstract:Copper metal is third most abundant trace element in human body. Determination of Cu (II) ions is a burning topic in field of environment protection and food safety because of its significant impact on ecosystem. In this study, 2,6-pyridine dicarboxylic acid (PDA) has been explored as "turn-off" florescent probe for florescent detection of Cu (II) ions. This sensor showed highly selective complexing ability towards Cu (II) ions. Addition of aqueous solution of Cu (II) ions remarkably quenched the fluorescence intensity of PDA while, on contrary, there was no any prominent fluorescence quenching interference on addition of various metal ions. The binding mode of PDA and Cu (II) ions was determined as stoichiometry of 1:1 and it was further confirmed by single crystal XRD analysis. Mechanisms of static and dynamic quenching were confirmed by stern–volmer plot. Limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantification (LOQ) for Cu (II) ions was calculated as 3.6 μM and 1.23 μM respectively, which is far below the acceptable value (31.5μM) according to the World Health Organization. The use of the sensor for detection of Cu (II) ions in real samples in aqueous media was also performed.

Abstract:A selective and sensitive sequential ratio/"turn-off" dual mode fluorescent chemosensor BTP-LU for multi-fluorescence signals recognition of Cu2+ based on benzothiazole skeleton has been constructed. The structure of the probe BTP-LU and compound 1 have been confirmed by NMR and HRMS. At low concentration of Cu2+, the ratio fluorescence signals are attributed to the recovery of ESIPT process BTP by Cu2+ induced hydrolysis of the 2-picolinic formate in BTP-LU. When at high concentration of Cu2+, the fluorescence emission intensity gradually decreased, which might be attributed to the chelation of the produced compound BTP with Cu2+ to enhance the fluorescence quenching effect. Moreover, the probe BTP-LU has been successfully used to detect Cu2+ in calf serum and bovine serum albumin solution. This may provides a new analytical tool for detecting Cu2+ in solution and serums

Abstract:A novel 1,2,3-triazole based dansyl fluorophore has been designed and synthesized for detecting Cu 2+ as a fluorescent probe ( P1 ). The probe P1 exhibited high sensitivity and selectivity for Cu 2+ compared to other selected species in aqueous solution within a wide pH span (5 to 14), which showed that P1 may be applied in the entire alkaline pH window. The limit of detection ( LOD ) was measured to be as low as 5 × 10 −7 mol/L for Cu 2+ . A 1:2 binding ratio and association constant of 4.6 × 10 4 M −1 between P1 and Cu 2+ were determined. Additionally, rapid response to Cu 2+ was demonstrated in less than 3 seconds and the linear concentration range was from 0.5 to 2.5 μmol/L. Moreover, probe P1 showed good biocompatibility and cell membrane permeability and was successfully applied for imaging Cu 2+ in water samples and living cells, which demonstrates the application of P1 in complicated environments.

Abstract:Herein, we report a highly selective fluorescent probe for the detection of Cu( II ). The detection mechanism relies on the Cu( II )-catalyzed oxidative hydroxylation of 2-(aminocarbonyl)phenylboronic acid into salicylamide, thus recovering the excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) effect and inducing more than 35-fold fluorescence enhancement. The simple structure and readily available fluorescent probe give a novel method for quantitatively detecting Cu( II ) in the linear range of 0–22 μM, with a limit of detection down to 68 nM, and exhibiting high selectivity for Cu( II ) over 16 other metal ions.

Mercury(II) (Hg2+) has acute toxicity. The development of ion-selective fluorescence sensors for the selective detection of Hg2+ is an essential task to accomplish. Objective: The aim of this study is to detect Hg2+ in an aqueous medium. A fluorescence sensor (DP) based on Schiff base was designed and utilized to detect Hg2+. Method: Scanning electron microscope (SEM), Fourier transformed Infrared (FT-IR), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were used to learn the sensing mechanism between sensor DP and Hg2+ cations. Result: When Hg2+ ions were added to the sensor DP, it showed a dramatic fluorescent “turn-on” response for Hg2+ in dimethylformamide (DMF) solution. And the detection limit (LOD) of DP for Hg2+ in aqueous media (1.0 mol L-1) was 2.23 × 10-8 mol L-1. Conclusion: In summary, an aminoantipyrine-containing Schiff base fluorescent chemosensor for extraordinary recognition of Mercury(II) was designed and synthesized via a simple one-step pathway and led to intermolecular self-assembly through π-π stacking interactions. And the sensor DP could fluorescently “turn on” when the Hg2+ cation was added. The limitation of Hg2+ was 2.23×10-8 M, which indicated that the sensor DP could be useful as a highly selective and sensitive sensor for detecting Hg2+ ions in an aqueous medium by the strong interaction with DP. Notably, the sensor DP was used as a fluorescent display material with satisfactory results.
