Abstract:Improving the sensitivity of the fluorescence method is crucial in biosensor fields. In this study, an ultrasensitive and excellent selectivity method was developed for the detection of trace Cu2+ ions using 3-mercaptopropionic acid capped CdSSe/CdS/ZnS quantum dots (MPA-CdSSe/CdS/ZnS QDs) as a fluorescent probe. Through energy band engineering to optimize the interior inorganic structure and passivate the surface defects, the photoluminescence quantum yield of the MPA-CdSSe/CdS/ZnS QDs in aqueous solution had as high as 70 %. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM) analysis revealed the prepared CdSSe/CdS/ZnS QDs were cubic zinc blende structure with average diameter 7.2 nm. Further, the fluorescence of the MPA-CdSSe/CdS/ZnS QDs was significantly quenched by the Cu2+ with fast response time through an efficient photo-induced electron transfer (PET) progress. By optimizing the thickness of CdS shell, the MPA-CdSSe/CdS/ZnS QDs probe with appropriate CdS shell thickness exhibited excellent linear linearity and sensitivity for the detection of Cu2+ ions with limit of detection as low as 0.05 nM. Additionally, ions interference experiments demonstrated the good selectivity of the probe towards Cu2+. Furthermore, this sensing system could also be applied to the measurement of Cu2+ ions in real water samples with satisfactory recoveries. This work provided new insights to design and synthesize high-performance QDs-based fluorescence probes with controllable exciton emission behavior for their applications in biosensor and biological fields.

Abstract:A new chemosensor for Cu2+ based on Schiff base with high sensitivity and selectivity was designed and synthesized. The fluorescence intensity of the chemosensor in CH3CN solution was enhanced 160-fold after the addition of 10 equiv. Cu2+ over other metal ions. In addition, it also facilitates colorimetric detection for Cu2+ in CH3CN solution. The chemosensor displayed low detection limit and fast response time to Cu2+.
Novel phenothiazine-based fast-responsive colori/fluorimetric sensor for highly sensitive, selective and reversible detection of Cu2+ in real water samples and its application as an efficient solid-state sensor

Abstract:A novel highly sensitive and selective phenothiazine-based sensor PN has been successfully synthesized. The sensor PN showed specific recognition towards Cu2+ through dual "naked-eye" colorimetric and "turn-off" fluorescence responses in DMSO/H2O (1:3, V/V) solution with ultrafast response and good reversibility. The detection limit was determined to be as low as 0.179 µM, which was much lower than drinking water permission concentration by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (~20 µM) and the World Health Organization (~30 µM). The 1:1 binding mechanism of PN with Cu2+ was proposed and well confirmed by fluorescence titration, Job's plot, 1H NMR, HRMS, FTIR analysis and DFT studies. Moreover, the sensor PN was successfully applied to sensitively detect the Cu2+ ions in real water samples with good accuracy and high precision. Furthermore, sensor PN could serve as a cost-effective solid-state sensor for immediate, convenient and "naked-eye" colorimetric detection of Cu2+ in environmental samples.

Abstract:Copper ion (Cu2+) plays important role in life system and industry, therefore, efficient detection of Cu2+ is very important. To improve the selectivity and sensitivity of Cu2+, herein, quinoline and coumarin groups were rationally employed into a novel fluorescent sensor CQ to efficiently sensing Cu2+ through the collaboration of these two groups. Interestingly, the CQ possesses aggregation‐induced emission (AIE) properties and shows nice selective and sensitive fluorescent response to Cu2+. The lowest limit of detection (LOD) for Cu2+ is 2.81×10‐8 M. Moreover, the Cu2+ sensing process has good anti‐interference properties. The possible recognition mechanism was investigated by experiments and theoretical calculations, which supplied a deep insight not only on the collaboration of the quinoline and coumarin groups in the Cu2+ recognition process, but also on the charge transfer induced fluorescent response mechanism. The results shown that the CQ could specifically detected Cu2+ via the collaboration of the quinoline and coumarin groups through multiple coordination interactions. Importantly, test strips based on CQ were fabricated, which could act as test kits for convenient and efficient detection of Cu2+.

Abstract:Trace Cu2+ ions in aqueous solution were detected with ultra-sensitivity and excellent selectivity by using CdSe quantum dots (QDs) with enhanced fluorescence properties as fluorescent reporters. CdSe QDs were first synthesized by using aqueous route with 3-mercaptopropionic acid (3-MPA) as capping agent. By further thermal-annealing the as-prepared 3-MPA capped CdSe QDs in the presence of imidazole (IM) under nitrogen atmosphere at 70°C, the fluorescence quantum yields of CdSe QDs in aqueous solution could be dramatically enhanced to be ∼10.9%. These CdSe QDs with enhanced fluorescence exhibited fast fluorescence response (within 1min), ultra-sensitivity and excellent selectivity toward Cu2+ ions over other metal ions in aqueous solution. The Cu2+-induced aggregation of CdSe QDs led to the significant fluorescence quenching of the CdSe QDs. The limit of detection (LOD) calculated for Cu2+ could reach as low as 0.13–0.16ppb (2.0–2.5nM). The co-existence of other metal ions did not interfere with the sensing of trace Cu2+ ions in aqueous solution.

Abstract:A novel fluorescent sensor for the detection of Cu 2+ was developed based on carbazole derivatives. After the addition of Cu 2+ , the sensor exhibited obvious fluorescence quenching phenomenon, and the optical signal variation also enabled the sensor to quantitatively analyze Cu 2+ due to the formation of a stable 1:1 metal-ligand complex in a short time. In addition, the sensor possessed chemical reversibility and pH stability. The cell imaging and zebra fish experiments also verified its application value in biological system.

Abstract:A fluorescent chemosensor for fast detection of Cu 2+ ion has been established based on a novel pyridine-appended half-salamo-based compound. The chemosensor PHS is easy to synthesize, eco-friendly and cost effective. It demonstrates an excellent selectivity and sensitivity towards Cu 2+ ion in the mixed DMF : H 2 O (9 : 1, V / V, pH = 7.2) solution by change in fluorescence intensity. Calculated through the Origin Program, relevant experimental results were obtained, such as the limit of detection (LOD), the limit of quantification (LOQ) and the association constant ( K a ). Compared with other reported probes, this probe showed a lower detection limit and provided a relatively simple and effective method for the detection of Cu 2+ . In addition, plausible mechanism for the interaction of the probe PHS with Cu 2+ was proposed according to the fluorescence titration experiments, Job's plot, and DFT calculations.

Abstract:A simple turn-off fluorescent probe, 5-(diethylamino)-2-(hydrazonomethyl)phenol (DHP), is designed and synthesized for the sensitive and selective detection of Cu 2+ . The bright green fluorescence of DHP is quenched after the addition of Cu 2+ . The probe DHP exhibits good anti-interference performance against Cu 2+ in the presence of multiple metal ions. The fluorescence intensity of DHP (10 μM) at 522 nm is well linearized with the Cu 2+ concentration at 0–5 μM, and it has a detection limit of 0.29 nM ( R 2 = 0.9949). The complexation ratio of the probe DHP to Cu 2+ is 2 : 1 and the complexation constant is 3.44 × 10 4 M −1 ( R 2 = 0.9974). In addition, the probe DHP can be recovered using EDTA and Cu 2+ can be effectively monitored at pH 5–11, with good results in dipstick experiments and actual water samples. HepG-2 cells remained viable in excess of 90% after being exposed to DHP (50 μM) for 24 h, which demonstrates the extremely low toxicity of DHP, and it can be used for in vivo cell imaging.

Abstract:A new dual responsive colorimetric and fluorescent turn-off sensor for Fe3+ and Cu2+ was designed and synthesized based on quinoxaline derivative by a simple procedure reaction. 2,3-bis(6-bromopyridin-2-yl)-6-methoxyquinoxaline (BMQ) was fabricated and characterized using ATR-IR, 13C and 1H NMR, and Mass spectroscopy. The interaction of BMQ with Fe3+ caused a significant color change from colorless to yellow. The sensing complex BMQ-Fe3+ with high selectivity was described to be 1:1 by the molar ratio plot. In this experiment, iron was detected by naked-eye using a recently synthesized ligand (BMQ). This color change was unexpectedly observed in iron-overloaded plasma, which had previously been admitted by AAS (Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy). Normal plasma, however, did not exhibit this color change. Interestingly, Cu2+ ions cause a quench at the local emission around 565 nm. On the other hand, receptor-binding selectivity for Cu2+ over a wide linear concentration range was observed through changes in the emission spectra. BMQ-Cu2+ was characterized to be 1:1 by the Job's plot. The emission intensity of BMQ-Cu2+ complex was balanced within only 1 min. various mineral water samples were analyzed for detecting Cu2+. The results show the great potential of the developed probe BMQ for the sensing of Cu2+ ions in mineral and drinking water samples.

Abstract:A new ratiometric fluorescent sensor for Cu(2+), WLN, has been developed via integrating a 1,8-naphthalimide fluorophore with 8-aminoquinoline. WLN exhibits a highly selective ratiometric response to Cu(2+) over other transition metal ions in aqueous media. Moreover, its practical ratiometric imaging ability for intracellular Cu(2+) has been confirmed in human breast adenocarcinoma cells (MCF-7 cells) using a confocal microscope.

Abstract:Low molecular weight polystyryllithium was synthesised and terminated with a two-fold molar excess of beta-bromostyrene to produce an end-functionalised polymer. 1,3-Diphenylallyl-terminated polystyrene and other reaction products were analysed by FT-Raman spectroscopy. By comparison with model compounds, it can be deduced that beta-bromostyrene with a predominantly trans configuration gave rise to primarily cis conformational unsaturation at the polystyrene chain-end. It was also demonstrated that a polystyrene 'dimer' and 1,4-diphenylbutadiene were produced via side-reactions which are considered to result from metal-halogen exchange in the reagents.

Abstract:A new rhodamine B derivative colorimetric and fluorescent sensor (1) was synthesized by condensation reaction of rhodamine B hydrazide and 2,4-dihydroxybenzaldehyde, which showed reversible and highly selective and sensitive recognition toward Cu2+ over other examined metal ions. Upon addition of Cu2+, sensor 1 exhibits remarkably enhanced absorbance intensity and color change from colorless to pink in DMSO and MeCN aqueous buffer solution or pure MeCN, and shows significant off–on fluorescence accompanied by color changes from colorless to orange in MeCN. The sensor 1 was also successfully applied to the determination of Cu2+ in water samples.

Abstract:A simple amide compound (QLBA), prepared from quinoline-2-carboxylic acid and 2-(1H-benzo[d]imidazol-2-yl)aniline, was synthesized and evaluated as an efficient fluorescence chemosensor for the selective recognition of copper ions (Cu2+). This sensor could detect Cu2+ in CH3OH/HEPPES buffer in a wide pH range (4.0-10.0), with obvious fluorescence quenching. The obtained QLBA-Cu2+ complex could be used as a new cascade sensor for detecting sulfide anions (S2-). The corresponding detection limits were found to be 2.2 x 10(-7) M for Cu2+ and 4.6 x 10(-7) M for S2-. The sensing mechanisms of QLBA toward Cu2+ were systematically investigated in detail by NMR, HR-MS analysis, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. In addition, this sensor was verified to be of low cytotoxicity and to have good imaging characteristics for the detection of Cu2+ and further for the recognition of S2- in living cells, suggesting that QLBA was a useful tool for tracking Cu2+ and S2- ions in vivo.

Abstract:A BODIPY-based turn-on fluorescent probe 1 has been designed and synthesized for fluorescence detection of Cu2+ in aqueous media and imaging in living cells. The CN bonds are selectively hydrolyzed by the reaction with Cu2+ to generate formyl-BODIPY. The favorable features of probe 1 towards Cu2+ include significant fluorescence enhancement (over 290-fold), high selectivity and low detection limit (0.1 μM).

Abstract:The fluorescent probe has become an important method for the detection of heavy metal ions. In the present work, a new and simple fluorescent probe, Cu-P, for detecting copper ion (Cu^2+) was designed and synthesized. The probe has shown high sensitivity and selectivity toward Cu^2+. The detection limit was 13 nM (based on the 3o^-/slope). A significant color change from yellow to pink was observed; thus, the probe Cu-P could serve as a “naked-eye” indicator for Cu^2+. Furthermore, the proposed probe was used to detect Cu^2+ in real water and soil extract samples, with the result being satisfactory. Therefore, our proposed probe would provide a promising method for the detection of Cu^2+ in the environment.

Abstract:A new dual-mode ratiometric fluorescence and colorimetric probe for selective determination of Cu2+ was developed based on blue-emission sulfur quantum dots (SQDs) and yellow-emission carbon quantum dots (CQDs). The fluorescence and absorbance of CQDs increased in the presence of Cu2+ due to the Cu2+ -oxidized o-phenylenediamine group on the surface of the CQDs. Because of the inner filter effect between SQDs and CQDs-Cu2+, the fluorescence response of SQDs decreased following the introduction of Cu2+. Furthermore, in the presence of Cu2+, the dual-mode SQD–CQD probe showed visible color changes under both ultraviolet light and sunlight. Under optimal conditions, the dual-mode probe was used to quantitatively detect Cu2+ with a linear range of 0.1–5.0 μM for ratiometric fluorescence and colorimetry, with a limit of detection of about 31 nM and 47 nM, respectively. Finally, the dual-mode probe was used for the determination of Cu2+ in practical samples to expand the practical application, and the difference between ratiometric fluorescence and colorimetric methods was compared. The recovery results confirmed the high accuracy of the dual-mode probe, showing that it has immense potential for sensitive and selective detection of Cu2+ in practical samples.Graphical abstract

Abstract:Copper is an essential trace element for the proper functioning of organ and metabolic process in humans. However, both its excess and deficiency in the body can result in adverse health effects. A BODIPY containing 2,2′-bipyridyl group was synthesized and used as a fluorescent chemodosimeter for selective Cu2+ detection in mild condition. This BODIPY shows fast response (~1 min) and high sensitivity for Cu2+ in aqueous solution due to the photoinduced electron transfer from the excited state of fluorophore to the bipyridyl unit complexed to Cu2+. The fluorescence quenching mechanism revealed by MALDI-TOF Mass spectra showed one Cu2+ could coordinate with two BODIPY molecules, and this coordination is reversible. This simple BODIPY dyes also could be used for sensing the Cu2+ in living cell. This work contributes to extend the potential applications of BODIPY to the biological and environmental areas.

Abstract:Through molecular design of a new phenanthro[9,10-d]imidazole-based compound, the probe 4-VB-PI-DMBA (4-VB-PI-DMBA = N,N-dimethyl-4-(1-(4- vinylbenzyl)-1H-phenanthro[9,10-d]imidazole-2-yl)aniline) strongly emissive at λ em = 462 nm, is capable of the uniquely fluorescent “turn-off” for Cu2+ ion with a detection limit of 30.2 nM. This result shows that the phenanthro[9,10-d]imidazole-derivative with a twisting structure and without proton-donating groups, renders a selective fluorescence and visual sensor platform to Cu2+ ion.
