Abstract:The manganese(Mn) redox cycling system in this work was created by combining Mn(IV)-reducing bacteria MFG10 with Mn(II)-oxidizing bacteria HY129. The biomanganese oxides (BMO) generated by strain HY129 were transformed by strain MFG10 to Mn(II), finishing the Mn redox cycling, in which nitrate (NO 3 – -N) was converted to nitrite, which was further reduced to nitrogen gas. The system could achieve 85.7 % and 98.8 % elimination efficiencies of Mn(II) and NO 3 – -N, respectively, at Mn(II) = 20.0 mg/L, C/N = 2.0, pH = 6.5, and NO 3 – -N = 16.0 mg/L. The removal of bisphenol A (BPA) and zinc (Zn(II)) at 36 h reached 91.7 % and 89.7 % under the optimal condition, respectively. Furthermore, the Mn redox cycling system can reinforce the metabolic activity and electron transfer activity of microorganisms. The findings showed that the adsorption by bioprecipitation throughout the Mn cycling was responsible for the elimination of Zn(II) and BPA.

Abstract:To efficiently and simultaneously remove nitrate (NO3--N) and Cd(II) from aqueous solution, a novel type of biochar fungal pellet (BFP) immobilized denitrification bacteria (Cupriavidus sp. H29) composite was used in a bioreactor. The removal performance of the bioreactor R1 for the initial concentration of 27.7 mg L-1 nitrate and 10.0 mg L-1 Cd(II) reached 98.1 and 93.9% respectively, and the inoculation of strain H29 in bioreactor R1 significantly enhanced the removal efficiency of contaminants. The 3D-EEM spectra analysis showed that the activity of microorganisms in the bioreactor was higher at a lower concentration of Cd(II). FTIR indicated the effect of functional groups in BFP in bioadsorption of Cd(II). In addition, high-throughput analysis of species composition of the microbial community in the bioreactors at different levels demonstrated that strain H29 played a significant part in the bioreactor. This research provided a perspective for simultaneous restoration of nitrate and heavy metals in wastewater, and also enriched the application of fungal pellet (FP) in reactors.

Abstract:The remediation of combined pollution of heavy metals and antibiotics in an aqueous environment remains challenging. Through magnetite (Fe3O4) dispersion followed by sulfonation modification, we report a novel bifunctional biochar-based composite (labeled Fe3O4@BC<bold>-</bold>SO3H) for simultaneous removal of arsenite (As(III)) and tetracycline (TC) in aqueous solutions. Batch experiments in single-solute systems show that Fe3O4@BC<bold>-</bold>SO3H exhibits faster kinetic and higher adsorption capacity than raw biochar, Fe3O4, and magnetite-dispersed biochar (Fe3O4@BC), thus leading to enhanced removal efficiency for either As(III) or TC. More notably, Fe3O4@BC<bold>-</bold>SO3H can simultaneously remove above 85% of As(III) and TC compared with less than 50% removal of As(III) and TC by biochar, Fe3O4, and Fe3O4@BC. Combining the spectroscopic analyses, the co-removal process of As(III) and TC indicates a unique mechanism with two-stage reactions, which involves As(III) redox transformation in the first stage and TC adsorption in the second stage. This study proposes a new strategy to design biochar-based composites for the decontamination of As(III) and TC. Overall, the excellent performance and stability of Fe3O4@BC<bold>-</bold>SO3H show its substantial potential as a low-cost, highly efficient, and eco-friendly material for the remediation of combined pollution in water.

Abstract:A biofilm reactor filled with chia seeds gum modified biochar was set up for the simultaneous removal of nitrate, cadmium and zinc from calcium-containing wastewater via denitrification and microbially-induced (calcium) carbonate precipitation. The reactor performance was studied under different conditions of pH, Cd concentration, and hydraulic retention time. The optimal removal efficiency of the reactor for NO 3 − -N, Ca 2+ , Cd 2+ , and Zn 2+ were 99.98, 79.89, 100, and 99.84 %, respectively. 3D-EEM indicated the aromatic compounds confirming the stability of the reactor. FTIR illustrated the presence of -OH, CaCO 3 , C-O-C, and C-O-H indicating the precipitation and role of gum in MICP. SEM confirmed that the seed crystal induced the repeated crystallization of free metal ions. XRD showed that heavy metals were removed in the form of CaCO 3 , CdCO 3 , ZnCO 3 , Ca 3 (PO 3 ) 2 , Cd 3 (PO 3 ) 2 , and Zn 3 (PO 3 ) 2 co-crystallization. SEM-EDS showed the composition and distribution of elements. High-throughput sequencing showed that Curpriavidus sp. GMF1 and Ochrobactrum sp. GMC12 were the dominant bacterial species, with powerful denitrification and MICP mineralization capabilities.

Abstract:To improve the poor stability of nano zero-valent iron (nZVI), corn-straw biochar (BC) was used as a support for the synthesis of composites of nZVI-biochar (nZVI/BC) in different mass ratios. After a thorough characterization, the obtained nZVI/BC composite was used to remove hexavalent chromium [Cr( VI )] in an aquatic system under varying conditions including composite amount, Cr( VI ) concentration, and pH. The obtained results show that the treatment efficiency varied in the following order: nZVI–BC (1 : 3) > nZVI–BC (1 : 5) > nZVI alone > BC alone. This order indicates the higher efficiency of composite material and the positive effect of nZVI content in the composite. Similarly, the composite dosage and Cr( VI ) concentration had significant effects on the removal performance and 2 g L −1 and 6 g L −1 were considered to be the optimum dose at a Cr( VI ) concentration of 20 mg L −1 and 100 mg L −1 , respectively. The removal efficiency was maximum (100%) at pH 2 whereas solution pH increased significantly after the reaction (from 2 to 4.13). The removal kinetics of Cr( VI ) was described by a pseudo-second-order model which indicated that the removal process was mainly controlled by the rate of chemical adsorption. The thermodynamics was more in line with the Freundlich model which indicated that the removal was multi-molecular layer adsorption. TEM-EDS, XRD, and XPS were applied to characterize the crystal lattice and structural changes of the material to specify the interfacial chemical behaviour on the agent surface. These techniques demonstrate that the underlying mechanisms of Cr( VI ) removal include adsorption, chemical reduction–oxidation reaction, and co-precipitation on the surface of the nZVI–BC composite. The results indicated that the corn-straw BC as a carrier material highly improved Cr( VI ) removal performance of nZVI and offered better utilization of the corn straw.

Abstract:The coexistence of nitrate and endocrine substances (EDCs) in groundwater is of global concern. Herein, an efficient and stable polypyrrole@corn cob (PPy@Corn cob) bioreactor immobilized with Zoogloea sp. was designed for the simultaneous removal of 17β-estradiol (E2), nitrate and Mn(II). After 225 days of continuous operation, the optimal operating parameters and enhanced removal mechanism were explored, also the long-term toxicity and microbial communities response mechanisms under E2 stress were comprehensively evaluated. The results showed that the removal efficiencies of E2, nitrate, and Mn(II) were 84.21, 82.96, and 47.91%, respectively, at the optimal operating conditions with hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 8 h, pH of 6.5 and Mn(II) concentration of 20 mg L-1. Further increased of initial E2 (2 and 3 mg L-1) resulted in the inhibiting effect of denitrification and manganese oxidation, but excellent E2 removal efficiencies maintained, which were associated with the formation and continuous accumulation of biomanganese oxides (BMO). Characterization analysis of biological precipitation demonstrated that adsorption and redox conversion on the BMO surface played key roles in the removal of E2. In addition, different levels of E2 exposure are decisive factors in community evolution, and bioaugmented bacterial communities with Zoogloea as the core group can dynamically adapt to E2 stress. This study offers the possibility to better utilize microbial metabolism and to advance opportunities that depend on microbial physiology and material characterization applications.

Abstract:In this experiment, the prepared tea biochar-cellulose@LDH material (TB-CL@LDH) was combined with mycelium pellets to form the composite mycelial pellets (CMP), then assembled and immobilized with strains Pseudomonas sp. Y1 and Cupriavidus sp. ZY7 to construct a bioreactor. At the best operating parameters, the initial concentrations of phosphate (PO43--P), ammonia nitrogen (NH4+-N), chemical oxygen demand (COD), zinc (Zn2+), and phenol were 22.3, 25.0, 763.8, 1.0, and 1.0 mg L-1, the corresponding removal efficiencies were 80.4, 87.0, 83.4, 91.8, and 96.6%, respectively. Various characterization analyses demonstrated that the strain Y1 used the additional carbon source produced by the strain ZY7 degradation of cellulose to enhance the removal of composite pollutants and clarified the principle of Zn2+ and PO43--P removal by adsorption, co-precipitation and biomineralization. Pseudomonas and Cupriavidus were the dominant genera according to the high-throughput sequencing. As shown by KEGG results, nitrification and denitrification genes were affected by phenol. The study offers prospects for the simultaneous removal of complex pollutants consisting of NH4+-N, PO43--P, Zn2+, and phenol.

Abstract:In recent years, under the condition of lack of carbon source, the presence of composite micro-pollutants make the removal of nitrate seriously damaged, and to find a suitable way to solve this problem is imminent. A fixed-biofilm carrier modified by mixing sponge iron (SI) and kapok fiber (KF) combined with strain Zoogloea sp. FY6 was constructed in this study to get a fixed-biofilm reactor with merit denitrification performance. By adjusting the operation parameters, it can be concluded that when the carbon to nitrogen (C/N) ratio was 1.5, the hydraulic retention time (HRT) was 6.0 h, and the pH was 6.0, the nitrate removal efficiency (NRE) of the fixed-biofilm reactor was up to 95.4% (2.95 mg L-1 h-1). In addition, the fixed-biofilm reactor constructed in this study can remove lead (Pb2+) and tetracycline (TC) excellently in the presence of SI and Zoogloea sp. FY6, and the denitrification performance can still maintain a high level under the influence of different concentrations of Pb2+ and TC. Furthermore, the addition of SI not only removes the compound pollutants, but also protects the toxicity of the pollutant inflow in the bioreactor, and the metabolic process of microorganisms in the bioreactor also removes some of the compound pollutants. The high-throughput data showed the abundance of strain Zoogloea sp. FY6 was still the highest value under the influence of various pollutants, and the metagenomic prediction showed that the fixed-biofilm reactor had perfect denitrification process and iron redox cycle benefits. This study provides a valuable reference for sustainable utilization of natural biological resources and reduction of material costs in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs).

Abstract:Immobilized microorganism technology has attracted increasing attention for high concentration of microbes, low cell loss and high resistance to impact of environment. The microbial reduction of nitrate in the presence of sediment-based biochar (SBC) and nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI) was investigated in four different free systems. NZVI-SBC/bacteria system realized the best nitrate removal of 97.61% within 3 days through the synergistic effect of SBC and nZVI on denitrifying bacteria. Accumulation of nitrite and ammonium in nZVI-SBC/bacteria system also decreased. High-throughput sequencing results showed that the proportion of denitrifying bacteria in microbial community structure increased after adding nZVI-SBC. The performance of nitrate removal was then studied through PVA/SA-immobilization. Immobilized active pellets performed better nitrate removal (98.89%) and stronger tolerance under different conditions than the free bacterial cells. Overall, this study provided a promising approach by utilizing SBC and nZVI for the bio-remediation of nitrate-contaminated water in practical application.

Abstract:Analysis on the accelerating effects of open wound healing by chitin and chitosan were carried out in dogs. Two, square, full-thickness wounds of skin (2 x 2 cm2) were created on the each dog's both sides of dorsal midline at 0, 14, 21, and 24 days. In one dog, one wound (left side) was treated with chitin (chitin group) and the other wound (right side) was not treated (control group). In another dog, one wound (left side) was treated with chitosan (chitosan group) and the other wound (right side) was not treated (control group). At 28 days after initial wounding, each wound site including surrounding tissue was taken for macroscopic and histological observations. Reepithelialization tended to be greater in chitin and chitosan groups than in the control group. However, when the scores of reepithelialization and granulation tissue were evaluated statistically, there was no significant differences in three groups during experimental period. Number of inflammatory cells was greater statistically in level in the control group than those in chitin and chitosan groups at 28 days after wounding. Many rete ridges were observed in the control group but very few in the another groups.

Abstract:High concentrations of heavy metals and other pollutants affect microbial activity in the wastewater treatment system and impede biological denitrification process. In this study, a novel Zn(II)-resistant aerobic denitrifier (Pseudomonas stutzeri KY-37) was isolated with potential in Bisphenol A (BPA) biodegradation and removal. The capability of this denitrifier in removing nitrogen, zinc, and BPA was tested. Using 56 mg/L nitrate as the sole nitrogen source, its removal efficiency achieved 98.5% in 12 h. This novel denitrifier had a strong auto-aggregation (maximum 65.8%), a high hydrophobicity rate (maximum 88.2%), and a massive amount (maximum 41.1 mg/g cell dry weight) of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) production. Moreover, Zn(II) removal efficiency reached more than 95% with the initial high concentrations of 200 mg/L. The maximum BPA removal efficiency reached 88.8% with initial 10 mg/L. The removal mechanism of BPA was further explored in terms of microbial degradation, EPS adsorption, and intermediate degradation products.

Abstract:The treatment of reverse osmosis concentrate generated from urban industrial sewage for resource recovery has been hot. In this research, a biofilm reactor was constructed by combining sycamore deciduous biochar, shell powder, and polyurethane sponge loaded with Zobellella denitrificans sp. LX16. For ammonia nitrogen (NH 4 + -N), calcium (Ca 2+ ), chemical oxygen demand (COD), cadmium (Cd 2+ ), and tetracycline (TC), the removal efficiencies were 98.69 %, 83.95 %, 97.26 %, 98.34 %, and 69.12 % at a hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 4 h, pH of 7.0, and influent salinity, Ca 2+ , and TC concentrations of 1.0, 180.0, and 3.0 mg/L, respectively. The biofilm reactor packing has a three-dimensional structure to ensure good loading of microorganisms while promoting electron transfer and metabolic activity of microorganisms and increasing the pollutant tolerance and removal efficiency. The reactor provides a practical reference for the sedimentation of reverse osmosis concentrate to remove Cd 2+ and TC by microbial induced calcium precipitation (MICP).

Abstract:Biochar-immobilized functional bacteria Bacillus SDB4 was applied for sulfamethoxazole (SMX) and zinc (Zn 2+ ) simultaneous removal in the bioreactor. Under the optimal operating conditions of HRT of 10 h, pH of 7.0, SMX concentration of 10 mg L −1 and Zn 2+ concentration of 50 mg L −1 , the removal efficiencies of SMX and Zn 2+ by the immobilized reactor (IR) were 97.42% and 96.14%, respectively, 20.39% and 30.15% higher than those by free bioreactor (FR). SEM-EDS and FTIR results revealed that the functional groups and light metals on the carrier promoted the biosorption and biotransformation of SMX and Zn 2+ in IR. Moreover, the improvement of SMX and Zn 2+ removal might be related to the abundance enhancement of functional bacteria and genes. Bacillus SDB4 responsible for SMX and Zn 2+ removal was the main strain in IR and FR. Biochar increased the relative abundance of Bacillus from 32.12% in FR to 38.73% in IR and improved the abundances of functional genes (such as carbohydrate metabolism, replication and repair and membrane transport) by 1.82%–11.04%. The correlations among the physicochemical properties , microbial communities, functional genes and SMX-Zn 2+ co-contaminant removal proposed new insights into the mechanisms of biochar enhanced microbial removal of antibiotics and heavy metals in biochar-immobilized bioreactors.

Abstract:Composite pollutants are prevalent in wastewater, whereas, the simultaneous accomplishment of efficient nitrogen removal and resources recovery remains a challenge. In this study, a bioreactor was constructed to contain Pseudomonas sp. Y1 using polyester fiber wrapped with shell powder and iron carbon spheres, achieving ammonia nitrogen (NH4+-N) removal, phosphate (PO43--P) recovery, and nickel (Ni2+) immobilization. The optimal performance of bioreactor was average removal efficiencies of NH4+-N, PO43--P, calcium (Ca2+), and Ni2+ as 82.42, 96.67, 76.13, and 98.29% at a hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 6 h, pH of 7.0, and influent Ca2+ and Ni2+ concentrations of 100.0 and 3.0 mg L-1, respectively. The bioreactor could remove PO43--P, Ca2+, and Ni2+ by biomineralization, co-precipitation, adsorption, and lattice substitution. Moreover, microbial community analysis suggested that Pseudomonas was the predominant genus and had possessed tolerance to Ni2+ toxicity in wastewater. This study presented an effective method to synchronously remove NH4+-N, recover PO43--P, and fix heavy metals through microbially induced carbonate precipitation (MICP) and heterotrophic nitrification and aerobic denitrification (HNAD) technology.

Abstract:Effective treatment of industrial wastewater containing complex pollutants, such as nitrate (NO3--N) and organic pollutants, remains a significant challenge to date. Here, a strain Nocardioides sp. ZS2 with denitrification and degradation of p-nitrophenol (PNP) was isolated and its culture conditions were optimized by kinetic analysis. Hydrophilic sponge carriers were prepared using polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), and chitosan (CS) to construct bioreactors. Furthermore, to further enhance the PNP degradation and denitrification performance of bioreactors, Pseudomonas stutzeri GF2 with denitrification capability was introduced. The results revealed that the removal efficiencies of PNP and NO3--N reached 97.9 % and 91.9 %, respectively, when hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 6 h, C/N of 2.0, and pH of 6.5. The bioreactor exhibited stable denitrification performance even with fluctuations in the influent PNP concentration. The potential functional prediction results revealed that the abundance of amino acids, fatty acids, and carbohydrates increased as the influent C/N decreased, reflecting a tendency of the microbial community to adjust carbon source utilization to maintain cell growth, metabolic balance, and resist adverse C/N environments. This research provides new insights into the effective removal of organic pollutants and NO3--N in wastewater treatment.

Abstract:The bioreactor performance of a moving bed biofilm reactor (MBBR) as post-treatment of expanded granular sludge bed (EGSB) effluent was investigated. Moreover, the microbial communities of the two bioreactors during different operation periods were studied. The MBBR was efficient for COD removal with the mean efficiency of 82.4%, and produced an effluent with high and stable quality against shock loading resulting from the low temperature applied to EGSB. The study indicates that the microbial community in the reactors could adapt to perturbations such as influent wastewater characteristics and operation temperature, which is beneficial to maintain efficient and stable COD removal in the combined EGSB-MBBR system. Archaeal 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis indicated the presence of Methanomethylovorans , Methanolinea , Methanoregula boonei , Methanosarcina barkeri , and Methanospirillum hungatei in the EGSB. Bacterial 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis indicated the presence of Runella limosa , Dokdonella , Sphaerotilus , Hydrogenophaga , and Pseudomonas in the MBBR. The EGSB-MBBR system established here could be used as an efficient option for organic matter removal, which holds a great potential in practical applications for nutrients (N and P) removal.

Abstract:Effectively regulating nonradical pathways is crucial for adapting to complex water environments in sulfate radical-based advanced oxidation processes (SR-AOPs). This study prepared manganese ferrite-modified cow-manure biochar composites (BC-FM) as peroxymonosulfate activators to remove sulfamethazine (SMT) and sulfonamide-resistant bacteria (SA-ARB) from wastewater. The extensive conjugated graphitic structure in biochar induced Fe 3 d orbital electron reconstruction, promoting empty orbitals formation and enhancing peroxymonosulfate inner-sphere complexation. This facilitated 100 % electron-transfer-dominated nonradical regulation. BC-FM exhibited remarkable catalytic performance, with apparent rate constant of 0.170 min −1 for SMT, inactivating ∼8.6 log of SA-ARB, and effectively blocking horizontal transfer of antibiotic resistance genes in both single and complex pollution systems (SMT/SA-ARB). Moreover, ion leaching experiments, cycling tests, real-water experiments, fluidized-bed and fixed-bed experiments demonstrated BC-FM's potential for prolonged utilization and practical implementation. This study offers new insights into designing high-performance, environment-friendly bimetal catalysts and provides a basis for remediating organic contaminants with SR-AOPs in livestock wastewater.

Abstract:Understanding the developmental characteristics of microbial communities in biofilms is crucial for designing targeted functional microbial enhancements for the remediation of complex contamination scenarios. The strong prioritization effect of microorganisms confers the ability to colonize strains that arrive first dominantly. In this study, the auto-aggregating denitrifying bacterial Pseudomonas stutzeri strain YC-34, which has both nitrogen and chromium removal characteristics, was used as a biological material to form a stable biofilm system based on the principle of dominant colonization and biofortification. The effect of the biofilm system on nitrogen and chromium removal was characterized by measuring the changes in the quality of influent and effluent water. The pattern of biofilm changes was analyzed by measuring biofilm content and thickness and characterizing extracellular polymer substances (EPS). Further analysis of the biofilm microbiota characteristics and potential functions revealed the mechanism of strain YC-34 biofortified biofilm. The results revealed that the biofilm system formed could achieve 90.56% nitrate-nitrogen removal with an average initial nitrate-nitrogen concentration of 51.9 mg/L and 40% chromium removal with an average initial hexavalent chromium Cr(VI) concentration of 7.12 mg/L. The biofilm properties of the system were comparatively analyzed during the biofilm formation period, the fluctuation period of Cr(VI)-stressed water quality, and the stabilization period of Cr(VI)-stressed water quality. The biofilm system may be able to increase the structure of hydrogen bonds, the type of protein secondary structure, and the abundance of amino acid-like components in the EPS, which may confer biofilm tolerance to Cr(VI) stress and allow the system to maintain a stable biofilm structure. Furthermore, microbial characterization indicated an increase in microbial diversity in the face of chromium stress, with an increase in the abundance of nitrogen removal-associated functional microbiota and an increasing trend in the abundance of nitrogen transfer pathways. These results demonstrate that the biofilm system is stable in nitrogen and chromium removal. This bioaugmentation method may provide a new way for the remediation of heavy metal-polluted water bodies and also provides theoretical and application parameters for the popularization and application of biofilm systems.
