Abstract:Milk yield, milking frequency, intermilking interval, teat-cup attachment success rate, and length of the milking procedure are important functional aspects of automatic milking systems (AMS). In this study, these variables were compared for 2 different models of AMS (AMS-1, with free cow traffic, and AMS-2, with selectively guided cow traffic) and auto-tandem milking parlors (ATM) on 4 farms each. Data on milking-stall visits and milkings of 20 cows were recorded on 3 successive days by means of video observations. Data were evaluated with mixed-effects models. Milk yield did not differ among the 3 milking systems. Milking frequency in the AMS was 2.47/d [95% confidence interval (CI) = (2.38, 2.56)], and was significantly higher than the 2 milkings/d in ATM. Milking frequency was lower for cows with a higher number of days in milk (DIM) in AMS-1 [change of -0.057/10 DIM, CI = (-0.070, -0.044)], but remained constant for cows with varying DIM in AMS-2 [change of -0.003/10 DIM, CI = (-0.034, 0.027)]. As a consequence, milking frequency was higher in early lactation [by 0.603, CI = (0.102, 1.103)] and lower in late lactation in AMS-1 than in AMS-2 [by -0.397, CI = (-0.785, -0.008)]. The intermilking interval showed the opposite pattern. Teat-cup attachment was more successful in AMS-1 than in AMS-2 (98.4 vs. 94.3% of the milkings), with some variation among farms (range: AMS-1 96.2 to 99.5%; AMS-2 91.5 to 96.1%). The length of the entire milking process did not differ among the milking systems [454 s, CI = (430, 478)], although the preparation phase was longer [changes in comparison with ATM: in AMS-1 by a factor of 2.90, CI = (2.30, 3.65), and in AMS-2 by 5.15, CI = (4.09, 6.48)] and the actual milking phase was shorter in both AMS-1 and AMS-2 than in ATM [changes in comparison with ATM: in AMS-1 by a factor of 0.76, CI = (0.62, 0.94), and in AMS-2 by 0.75, CI = (0.60, 0.93)]. The admission [changes in comparison with ATM: in AMS-1 by a factor of 2.56, CI = (1.55, 4.22), and in AMS-2 by 3.07, CI = (1.86, 5.08)] and preparation phases lasted longer in AMS-2 than in AMS-1, whereas the time required by the cows to leave the milking stall did not differ among the systems [changes in comparison with ATM: in AMS-1 by a factor of 0.89, CI = (0.55, 1.44), and in AMS-2 by 1.02, CI = (0.63, 1.66)]. In conclusion, different technical approaches to automatic milking led to differences in teat-cup attachment success rates, in the duration of several phases of the milking process, and in milking frequency. The capacity of an AMS could be further improved by shortening the preparation phase and reducing the proportion of failed milkings.

Abstract:The milking machine can transmit infection onto teats and disturb normal teat health. Milking-time tests allow advisors to quantify the degree to which the milking machine might be contributing to the risk of new intra-mammary infection. Cows' teat size and position have changed as have milk flow rates. Milk yields have been rising faster than unit attachment times. Milk flow rate has been shown to be positively associated with risk of new intra-mammary infection. Vacuum traces collected during milking can illustrate problems with biphasic milk flow or over milking and pressure records can help assess liner function. Lightweight data logging equipment is now available with excellent software to assist with interpretation.

Comparison of selected parameters of automated milking in dairy cattle barns equipped with a concentrate feeding system

Abstract:Automatic milking systems (AMSs) give cows relative freedom to choose the time and frequency of milking throughout the day. Feeding stations also may improve the management of farms. Combining milking robots and feeding stations (FS) may improve milking efficiency and milk yield. Therefore, combining AMS and FS may be beneficial for farmers. The objective of the research was to compare selected automatic milking parameters (daily indices per cow) registered by an AMS in relation to selected features including the presence of concentrate feeding stations. We analysed 931 cows born in 2013-14, in lactations 1-8. In total, we collected data from 357 318 milking days. The following parameters were examined: milking frequency (n/24 h), number of rejected milking (n/24 h), the average number of nipple attempts (n/milking), milking speed (kg/min), time spent in the milking box (s/24 h), milk yield (kg/24 h), milking efficiency (kg/min), rumination time (min/24 h), and concentrate intake (kg) per 100 kg of milk produced. The statistical analysis was conducted using a multi-factor analysis of variance. The analysis confirmed a statistical effect of the concentrate feeding system on most of the investigated traits, except for nipple attempts, box time and rumination time. In cows in barns with an FS, the following parameters were statistically higher compared to cows in non-FS barns: milking frequency (3.04 vs 2.73n/24 h), number of rejected milking (2.24 vs 1.51n/24 h), milking speed (2.98 vs 2.64 kg/min), milk yield (33.48 vs 30.14 kg/24 h), milking efficiency (1.80 vs 1.67 kg/min), and concentrate intake per 100 kg of milk produced (14.67 vs 12.67 kg). The study results indicate that using feeding stations in combination with an AMS can increase milking efficiency, hence the milk output from a milking robot.

Abstract:An automatic milking system (AMS) enables cows to be milked by a milking robot at fairly regular intervals, more or less voluntarily, and without human supervision. To reduce the cost and simplify the operation of an AMS for dairy farmers, the selection stall, where the system's computer decides whether cows are to be milked or not, was removed and the selection process was transferred to the milking stalls. The behaviour of 18 dairy cows in study 1 and 24 dairy cows in study 2 was investigated in a section of a loose housing system in which such an AMS was installed. In study 1, 18 cows had free access to the AMS from 0500 to 2300 hours. Per day, each cow paid on average 2.8 (SD=0.2) milking visits (cow was milked), 2.0 (SD=1.4) non-milking visits (cow was not milked), and 0.3 (SD=0.4) milking-failure visits (robot failed to attach milking cluster) to the AMS. In study 2, 24 cows had free access to the AMS 24 h a day. Each cow paid on average 2.8 (SD=0.4) milking visits, 2.5 (SD=2.0) non-milking visits, and 0.7 (SD=1.7) milking-failure visits to the AMS daily. In both studies, the type of visit a cow paid to the AMS determined the time interval until her next visit. In study 1, time intervals were: 321 min (SEM=12) after milking visits, 145 min (SEM=16) after non-milking visits, 115 min (SEM=10) after milking-failure visits. In study 2, time intervals were: 337 min (SEM=14) after milking visits, 117 min (SEM=17) after non-milking visits, 164 min (SEM=13) after milking-failure visits. In both studies, cows spent the longest time in the entry area of the AMS during non-milking visits (29 s (SEM=5) study 1; 33 s (SEM=3) study 2). Cows left the milking stalls slowest during non-milking visits in study 1 (10 s, SEM=1), and during milking-failure visits in study 2 (18 s, SEM=5). They spent the longest time in the exit area of the AMS after non-milking visits in study 1 (202 s, SEM=23), and after milking-failure visits in study 2 (141 s, SEM=28). In both studies, they defecated and urinated in the exit area. It was concluded that cows that do not need to be milked will enter the AMS if there is no selection stall to prevent unwarranted visits, and that cow traffic inside the system is slow. The combination of non-milking visits and slow cow traffic will lower the milking efficiency of the AMS.

Abstract:Automatic milking systems (AMS) have aroused worldwide interest recently. The first installation was by the company Lely in a project in the Netherlands (its homeland) in 1992. But nowadays, AMS represents a growing reality due to lobby for labor issues, rising costs, difficulty finding well-trained workers, and/ or difficulty keeping people on farms. This work aimed to present a review of the literature on AMS, beginning with a brief history of the evolution of the technology, showing advantages and limitations of its use, and ultimately giving some suggestions. The understanding of the technical functioning and operational running can help farmers and technicians in decision making on the adoption of the new technology. Besides workforce reduction and labor quality promotion, AMS has potential to improve feed conversion to milk, milk quality (with lower SCC), and cow productivity, as well as providing useful data and parameters for better farm management. Potential limitations include high investment costs, changes in milk composition (solids, free fatty acids), and increased risk of ketosis in cows.

Abstract:Automatic milking (AM) is increasing in modern dairy farming, and over 8,000 farms worldwide currently use this technology. Automatic milking system is designed to replace conventional milking managed by a milker in a milking parlor or in tie stalls. Cows are generally milked more frequently in AM than in conventional milking, and milking is quarter-based instead of udder-based. Despite improvements in the milking process and often building of a new barn before the introduction of AM, udder health of the cows has not improved; on the contrary, problems may appear following conversion from conventional milking to AM. This review focuses on udder health of dairy cows in AM, and we discuss several aspects of cow and milking management in AM associated with udder health. Finally, adequate management methods in AM are suggested. According to several studies comparing udder health between automatic and conventional milking or comparing udder health before and after the introduction of automatic milking in the same herds, udder health has deteriorated during the first year or more after the introduction of AM. Automatic detection of subclinical and clinical mastitis and cleaning the teats before milking are challenges of AM. Failures in mastitis detection and milking hygiene pose a risk for udder health. These risk factors can partly be controlled by management actions taken by the farmer, but AM also needs further technical development. To maintain good udder health in AM, it is imperative that the barn is properly designed to keep the cows clean and the cow traffic flowing. Milking frequency must be maintained for every cow according to its stage of lactation and milk production. Careful observation of the cows and knowledge of how to use all data gathered from the system are also important. "Automatic" does not mean that the role of a competent herdsman is in any way diminished.

Impact of automatic milking systems on dairy cattle producers' reports of milking labour management, milk production and milk quality

Abstract:Automatic milking systems (AMS), or milking robots, are becoming widely accepted as a milking technology that reduces labour and increases milk yield. However, reported amount of labour saved, changes in milk yield, and milk quality when transitioning to AMS vary widely. The purpose of this study was to document the impact of adopting AMS on farms with regards to reported changes in milking labour management, milk production, milk quality, and participation in dairy herd improvement (DHI) programmes. A survey was conducted across Canada over the phone, online, and in-person. In total, 530 AMS farms were contacted between May 2014 and the end of June 2015. A total of 217 AMS producers participated in the General Survey (Part 1), resulting in a 41% response rate, and 69 of the respondents completed the more detailed follow-up questions (Part 2). On average, after adopting AMS, the number of employees (full- and part-time non-family labour combined) decreased from 2.5 to 2.0, whereas time devoted to milking-related activities decreased by 62% (from 5.2 to 2.0 h/day). Median milking frequency was 3.0 milkings/day and robots were occupied on average 77% of the day. Producers went to fetch cows a median of 2 times/day, with a median of 3 fetch cows or 4% of the herd per robot/day. Farms had a median of 2.5 failed or incomplete milkings/robot per day. Producers reported an increase in milk yield, but little effect on milk quality. Mean milk yield on AMS farms was 32.6 kg/cow day. Median bulk tank somatic cell count was 180 000 cells/ml. Median milk fat on AMS farms was 4.0% and median milk protein was 3.3%. At the time of the survey, 67% of producers were current participants of a DHI programme. Half of the producers who were not DHI participants had stopped participation after adopting AMS. Overall, this study characterized impacts of adopting AMS and may be a useful guide for making this transition.

Abstract:Automatic milking systems, or robotic milking systems, are now well established as a milk harvesting technology in Europe, Nth America and Australasia. This system is quarter based harvesting where human activity is not routinely required for milking or initial mastitis detection activities. Mastitis risk factors common with conventional milking are: environmental contamination, teat congestion and teat hyperkeratosis risk. The risk factors which differ include: pre-milking preparation, impact formation, and overmilking risk. Mastitis detection technology varies between automatic milking unit types, but all should be characterised by test sensitivity, false alert rate and the gold standard used for test assessment.

Abstract:Adhesion of bacteria involved in anaerobic consortia was investigated in upflow anaerobic sludge bed reactors and was related to surface thermodynamics. The adhesion of hydrophilic cells appeared to be enhanced at a low liquid surface tension ((gamma)(infLV)), while the adhesion of hydrophobic cells was favored at a high (gamma)(infLV). Growth in protein-rich growth media resulted in low granular biomass yields; addition of polycations, such as poly-l-lysine and chitosan, increased the (gamma)(infLV) and the granular biomass yield. On the basis of the results of activity tests and microbial counts with wash-out cells, we identified two types of structured granules that were related to the influence of (gamma)(infLV). In one type of granules, hydrophilic acidogens surrounded a more hydrophobic methanogenic association. These granules were selected at a low (gamma)(infLV) provided that carbohydrates were available as substrates. The other type of granules was selected at a high (gamma)(infLV); hydrophobic cells (i.e., methanogens) were predominant throughout these granules. The granules which had acidogens as solid-phase emulsifiers around a methanogenic association appeared to allow more stable reactor performance. Decreasing the (gamma)(infLV) in the reactor by adding trace amounts of a surfactant also increased reactor stability.

Abstract:Automatic milking systems (AMS) are increasingly popular throughout the world. Our objective was to analyze 635 North American dairy farms with AMS for (risk) factors associated with increased milk production per cow per day and milk production per robot per day. We used multivariable generalized mixed linear regressions, which identified several significant risk factors and interactions of risk factors associated with milk production. Free traffic was associated with increased production per cow and per robot per day compared with forced systems, and the presence of a single robot per pen was associated with decreased production per robot per day compared with pens using 2 robots. Retrofitted farms had significantly less production in the first 4 yr since installation compared with production after 4 yr of installation. In contrast, newly built farms did not see a significant change in production over time since installation. Overall, retrofitted farms did not produce significantly more or less milk than newly constructed farms. Detailed knowledge of factors associated with increased production of AMS will help guide future recommendations to producers looking to transition to an AMS and maximize their production.

Abstract:In dairy farming, milking-related operations are time-consuming and expensive, but are also directly linked to the farm's economic profit. Therefore, reducing the duration of milking operations without harming the cows is paramount. This study aimed to test the variation in different parameters of milking operations on non-automatic milking machines to evaluate their effect on a herd and finally reduce the milking time. Two trials were set up on a dairy farm in Northern Italy to explore the influence of the pulsation ratio (60:40 vs. 65:35 pulsation ratio) and that of the detachment flow rate (600 g/min vs. 800 g/min) on milking performance, somatic cell counts, clinical mastitis, and teats score. Moreover, the innovative aspect of this study relates to the development of an optimized least-squares support vector machine (LSSVM) classification model based on the sparrow search algorithm (SSA) to predict the proper pulsation ratio and detachment flow rate for individual cows within the first two minutes of milking. The accuracy and precision of this model were 92% and 97% for shortening milking time at different pulsation ratios, and 78% and 79% for different detachment rates. The implementation of this algorithm in non-automatic milking machines could make milking operations cow-specific.

Abstract:The purpose of milking machines is to harvest milk at an optimum speed while maintaining cow comfort and preserving teat defence mechanisms against the invasion of mastitis pathogens, thus making machine settings critical in dairy herds. The various settings and combinations for milking machines were reviewed to enable operators to optimize them to preserve teat canal integrity and minimize mastitis. All databases of Web of Science and relevant websites were used to document machine settings and teat liners. All vacuum levels in milking systems need to be monitored. In addition, liners, milk yield, and automated cluster removal switch-point settings need to be regarded as bearing a risk of teat damage. They affect milking speed and vacuum levels at total, peak, and over-milking. An equilibrium should be reached between optimal milking speed and risk of teat damage. An increased switch-point setting shortens milking time and decreases overmilking and claw vacuum to preserve teat-canal integrity. Analysis of milk flow dynamics with a VaDia instrument highlights opportunities to improve milking protocols and equipment functions that align with the physiology of the cow. This knowledge can be applied on individual farms, in which herd milk yield, parlour layout, milking machine system, parlour management, and economics should be considered to obtain a balance between milking efficiency, udder health, and cow comfort. Standards for switch-point settings were identified in this review.

Abstract:Over the last few years, the adoption of automatic milking systems (AMS) has experienced significant increase. However, hardly any studies have been conducted to investigate the distribution of mastitis pathogens in dairy herds with AMS. Because quick mastitis detection in AMS is very important, the primary objective of this study was to determine operational reliability and sensibility of mastitis detection systems from AMS. Additionally, the frequency of pathogen-specific was determined. For this purpose, 228 cows from ten farms in Galicia (NW Spain) using this system were investigated. The California Mastitis Test (CMT) was considered the gold-standard test for mastitis diagnosis and milk samples were analysed from CMT-positive cows for the bacterial examination. Mean farm prevalence of clinical mastitis was 9% and of 912 milk quarters examined, 23% were positive to the AMS mastitis detection system and 35% were positive to the CMT. The majority of CMT-positive samples had a score of 1 or 2 on a 1 (lowest mastitis severity) to 4 (highest mastitis severity) scale. The average sensitivity and specificity of the AMS mastitis detection system were 58.2% and 94.0% respectively being similar to other previous studies, what could suggest limitations for getting higher values of reliability and sensibility in the current AMSs. The most frequently isolated pathogens were Streptococcus dysgalactiae (8.8%), followed by Streptococcus uberis (8.3%) and Staphylococcus aureus (3.3%). The relatively high prevalence of these pathogens indicates suboptimal cleaning and disinfection of teat dipping cups, brushes and milk liners in dairy farms with AMS in the present study.

Abstract:A comparative study was performed to evaluate the differences in behavioral and physiological stress responses during milking between cows that were milked by an automated milking system (AM-cows) and cows that were milked in a conventional tandem parlor (TM-cows). In a randomized design, 36 primiparous Holstein-Friesian dairy cows were observed and blood sampled (1-min intervals) individually during milking. AM-cows spent less time standing with their heads outside the feeding trough than TM-cows and had a lower heart rate. In addition, AM-cows had lower maximum plasma adrenaline and noradrenaline concentrations during milking. No differences were found in the number of steps. After tactile stimulation of the teats either by hand or by the cleaning brush, mean oxytocin concentrations did not differ. In AM-cows, however, elevated oxytocin levels were prolonged at the end of milking. Averaged over the first five blood samples, AM-cows tended to have higher plasma cortisol concentrations than TM-cows, but median fecal concentrations of the cortisol metabolite dioxoandrostane were comparable. Maximum quarter milk flow, maximum udder milk flow and residual milk as a percentage of the total milk volume was comparable. From this study it is concluded that behavioral and physiological responses, both in automatically and in conventionally milked cows, were relatively low and were typical for cows being milked. We therefore conclude that, as far as the welfare of the dairy cow during milking is concerned, automatic milking and conventional milking are equally acceptable.

Milk quality assessment in automatic milking systems: accounting for the effects of variable intervals between milkings on milk composition

Abstract:Variation in milk yield and milk composition was studied in two commercial herds with automatic milking systems (AMS). All cows were milk recorded and milk sampled at all milkings throughout 48 h. All samples were analysed for fat, protein, lactose, urea and somatic cell count (SCC). The resultant data set for herd 1 included 606 milk samples from 138 cows, for herd 2 the data set included 551 milk samples from 125 cows. There was a strong relationship between milk yield per milking and time interval since last milking. Within cow, the standard deviations for milk contents (%) of protein, lactose and urea were 0.12, 0.08 and 0.69. Adjusting these measures for milk yield at that milking had a negligible effect on this variation. Within cow, the standard deviations for milk fat and log SCC were 0.68 and 0.17. This variation could be significantly reduced, and bias corrected, by accounting for milk yield at that milking, expressed as a deviation from mean milk yield (MILKDIF). The correction equations were:mean daily milk fat %=individual milk fat %+0.120(MILKDIF)rS.D.=0.62mean daily log SCC=individual log SCC+0.035(MILKDIF)rS.D.=0.15However, there was still substantial variation in these measures. It is concluded that in AMS, single milk samples provide measures of milk protein, lactose and urea whose variability was comparable to that measured in conventional milking systems and could not be improved by correcting for variation in milk yield at that milking. Single milk samples in AMS systems provide poor measures of milk fat content. Milk fat and SCC values can be usefully corrected for variation in milk yield at that milking. Abstract:MILKING machines are used more than most other pieces of equipment on the dairy farm and yet their function, maintenance and potential contribution to mastitis incidents are poorly understood by many farmers. As a result, they are often neglected, despite the fact that they are responsible for generating the majority of a dairy farmer's income. It is important that veterinary surgeons involved in mastitis investigation have at least a basic understanding of the milking machine and its influence on levels of mastitis and thereby Bactoscan results or total bacterial counts (TBCs). It is very useful to be able to pinpoint possible problem areas so that the machine can either be included or excluded as a contributory factor. This article summarises the principles of machine milking and discusses the various ways in which the machine can increase the likelihood of mastitis. Some basic investigation methods and tests to check milking machine function are also described.

Abstract:Dairy farmers using automatic milking are able to manage mastitis successfully with the help of mastitis attention lists. These attention lists are generated with mastitis detection models that make use of sensor data obtained throughout each quarter milking. The models tend to be limited to using the maximum or average value of the sensor data pattern, potentially excluding other valuable information. They often put cows on the lists unnecessarily, and their sensitivity for abnormal milk classification is too low for automated separation. Therefore, we analyzed sensor data patterns within quarter milkings in order to identify potentially predictive variables for abnormal milk and clinical mastitis classification. The data used in this study was obtained at a commercial dairy farm in Germany in September 2002, where a German Simmental herd was milked by a Lely Astronaut system. In total, 3232 quarter milkings from 63 cows were analysed; 94 quarter milkings were defined as milk with abnormal homogeneity and 270 as clinical mastitis. A data flow diagram was developed to systematically describe the steps involved in the transformation of within quarter milking measurements into variables that potentially predict abnormal milk and clinical mastitis. Three types of pattern descriptors were used: level, variability, and shape. In addition to using the absolute value of the pattern descriptor, the descriptors were considered relative to their expected value based on pattern descriptor values from previous milkings and from other quarters within the same cow milking. Using this method, potentially predictive variables were computed for electrical conductivity, the colours red, green and blue, a combination of colour sensors, and milk production. The importance of a variable in predicting abnormal milk and clinical mastitis was evaluated by computing correlation coefficients as well as information gain ratios. The most important variables came from the sensors for electrical conductivity, blue and green. Variables describing the variability and shape of the measurement patterns were as important as mean and maximum values, and should be included in future modelling. Also variables that are based on absolute values should be considered for future modelling. Results suggest that clinical mastitis and abnormal milk classification models may include similar predictive variables, but requirements for these models differ resulting in the need for different models. The schematic approach to developing potentially predictive variables will be helpful when exploring the usefulness of new sensors, researching other approaches to estimate expected values, and studying sensor data patterns in general.

Abstract:The objectives were to examine the effect of an automated premilking stimulation (APS) by means of a high pulsation frequency (300 cycles/min) without a reduction of the vacuum in the pulsation chamber or claw piece on (1) milking performance, (2) teat tissue condition, and (3) udder health in dairy cows. In a randomized controlled field study, Holstein cows (n = 427) from 1 commercial dairy farm with a milking schedule of 3 times per day were assigned to treatment and control groups over a 90-d period. Treatments consisted of a maximum of 80 s (APS80) or 99 s (APS99) of mechanical stimulation at a pulsation rate of 300 pulses per minute and a ratio of 25:75 (no reduction of the pulsation chamber or milking vacuum). Cows in the control group (CON) received traditional premilking stimulation by means of manual forestripping for 8 s. Milking characteristics were documented with on-farm milk meters. Short- and long-term changes in teat tissue condition induced by machine milking were assessed visually on a weekly basis. Composite milk samples were analyzed once per month to determine somatic cell count. Generalized linear mixed models were used to study the effect of the treatment on the outcome variables. We observed no meaningful differences in milk yield or milking unit-on time. Least squares means and their 95% confidence intervals (95% CI) for cows in the APS80, APS99, and CON groups were 13.5 (13.1-14.0), 13.2 (12.8-13.7), and 13.2 (12.8-13.7) kg for milk yield and 222 (213-231), 219 (210-228), and 223 (214-232) s for milking unit-on time, respectively. The effect of treatment on bimodality was modified by milk yield such that the odds of bimodality increased in the treatment groups with increasing milk yield. Compared with cows in the CON group, the odds ratios (95% CI) of bimodality were 1.08 (0.62-1.89) in the APS80 group and 0.89 (0.55-1.42) in the APS99 group at a milk yield of 11 kg and 2.0 (1.24-3.22) in the APS80 group and 2.08 (1.29-3.35) in the APS99 group at a milk yield of 16 kg. We observed differences in short- and long-term changes in teat tissue condition between the treatment and control groups. Compared with cows in the CON group, the odds (95% CI) of short-term changes were 1.87 (1.35-2.58) for the APS80 group and 1.49 (1.08-2.07) for the APS99 group, and the odds of long-term changes were 1.52 (1.24-1.85) for cows in the APS80 group and 1.59 (1.31-1.94) for cows in the APS99 group. The least squares means (95% CI) for somatic cell counts (log10-transformed) were 4.74 (4.68-4.81) for the APS80 group, 4.77 (4.71-4.83) for the APS99 group, and 4.79 (4.73-4.86) for the CON group. We conclude that the APS system tested here had no negative effects on milk yield or milking unit-on time. However, differences in bimodality and teat tissue condition suggest that the APS system did not provide sufficient stimulation to facilitate a gentle milk harvest and adversely affects teat tissue condition.
