Abstract:The Morada Nova sheep breed is essential for the economy of the semi-arid region of Northeast Brazil, standing out for its adaptability, resistance to parasites and reproductive ability. However, the white variant is endangered, highlighting the importance of studies on its productivity to support conservation efforts. This study focuses on the growth curve of the Morada Nova sheep breed, using nonlinear models and analyzing flock profiles. Total of 764 observations of 165 animals from four farms in Ceará and Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil, were analyzed. Canonical discriminant analysis (CDA) was used for the exploratory analysis and four nonlinear models were used to study the growth curve. Weight from birth to 270 days of age, absolute growth rate (AGR), and the impact of sex on growth curves were assessed. Sex and farm are significant discriminating variables (P < 0.05) for the studied effects (weight and age). Weight was the primary phenotypic biomarker that discriminated between the two indicators, while age was a discriminating indicator only for the core effect. The Gompertz model was the most efficient, presenting the lowest residuals and greatest convergence. The study reveals new information about the growth of Morada Nova sheep, the white variety, including weight differences between the sexes at all analyzed ages and an inflection point before 90 days of age. These discoveries contribute to the understanding of the breed's growth and help in the formulation of conservation strategies.
Meta‐analysis of genetic parameters for growth traits in meat, wool and dual‐purpose sheep breeds in the world using a random‐effects model

Abstract:BACKGROUND: There is large variation in genetic parameters in literature for growth traits in sheep. Reliable estimation of genetic parameters is required for developing breeding programmes.OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to aggregate results of different studies by meta-analysis to improve reliability of estimated parameters.METHODS: In the current study, 221 papers that have been published between 1995 and 2021 were reviewed. Using a random-effects model in the Comprehensive Meta-Analysis software, direct and maternal heritabilities, as well as, genetic and phenotypic correlations between growth traits were estimated in meat (M), wool (W) and dual-purpose (D) sheep breeds. The growth traits in this study were birth weight, 3-month weight, 6-month weight, 9-month weight and yearling weight.RESULTS: The combined direct heritability was the lowest for birth weight (0.190 ± 0.004, 0.198 ± 0.003 and 0.196 ± 0.004 for M, W and D breeds, respectively) and the highest for yearling weight (0.264 ± 0.010, 0.304 ± 0.005 and 0.285 ± 0.020 for M, W and D breeds, respectively). The maternal heritability was the lowest for yearling weight (0.085 ± 0.003, 0.055 ± 0.002 and 0.052 ± 0.005 for M, W and D breeds, respectively) and the highest for 6-month weight (0.240 ± 0.088, 0.164 ± 0.001 and 0.162 ± 0.006 for M, W and D breeds, respectively). The phenotypic and genetic correlations were lower between the weights measured at more distant intervals. The lowest genetic correlation was observed between birth weight and yearling weight (0.290 ± 0.051 for W breeds).CONCLUSIONS: The small standard errors could indicate that the aggregation of results from different studies improved the reliability of estimated parameters and reduced range of 95% confidence intervals. Hence, the results could be used with greater level of confidence in sheep breeding programmes.

Abstract:Qianhua Mutton Merino is a dual-purpose (meat and wool) breed of sheep that has been newly developed in China. In this study, we assessed the growth and development of the Qianhua Mutton Merino sheep breed under house feeding conditions by measuring the body weight and chest circumference of 2300 rams and ewes of this breed aged 0–24 months. Based on the fitting results of three nonlinear growth models, namely Logistic, Gompertz, and von Bertalanffy, in Qianhua Mutton Merino, we selected the von Bertalanffy model because of its highest fitting degree among all models (R2 > 0.977). The significant analysis of the combined fixation of each sheep body's weight and bust took place (A: mature body weight, B: adjustment parameter, K: instant relative growth rate). The results revealed that parameters A, B, and K of body weight and chest circumference have high heritability and thus could be used as target traits for genetic improvement. Moreover, the correlation strength among A, B, and K suggested that these parameters can be used as a reference to adjust the genetic parameters in the growth model to genetically improve the body size of Qianhua Mutton Merino during breeding.

Abstract:As the economic level of individuals rises, so too does the demand for mutton. Enhancing the breeds of mutton sheep not only boosts production efficiency and economic benefits but also fosters the sustainable growth of the mutton sheep breeding industry. Thus, this study examines the early growth and reproductive traits of Tianmu Sainuo sheep, analyzing the genetic interactions among these traits to furnish a theoretical foundation for refining breeding strategies and expediting the genetic advancement of this breed. The investigation compiled 29,966 data entries, involving 111 sires for birth weight (BWT) and 113 for other metrics. The data encompassed 10,415 BWT records from 1,633 dams, 12,753 weaning weight (WWT) records from 1,570 dams, 12,793 average daily gain (ADG) records from 1,597 dams, and 13,594 litter size (LS) records from 1,499 dams. Utilizing the GLM procedure in SAS 9.2 software, the study analyzed the non-genetic influences on lamb BWT, WWT, ADG, and LS. Concurrently, DMU software estimated the variance components across various animal models for each trait. Employing the Akaike Information Criterion (AIC) and likelihood ratio test (LRT), six models were tested, incorporating or excluding maternal inheritance and environmental impacts, to identify the optimal model for deriving genetic parameters. The findings reveal that birth year (BY), birth quarter (BQ), birth type (BT), age of mother (AM), and birth sex (BS) exerted significant impacts on BWT, WWT, and ADG ( p < 0.01). Additionally, BQ and AM significantly influenced LS ( p < 0.01). The most accurate genetic evaluation model determined the heritability of BWT, WWT, ADG, and LS to be 0.0695, 0.0849, 0.0777, and 0.1252, respectively.

Abstract:The principal economic sector devoted to the breeding, raising, and production of farm animals is known as the livestock industry. There are precise standards for making high-quality feed in animal husbandry. Precision livestock feeding is a crucial component, with the potential to significantly impact the profitability of livestock; it permits the provision of diets to animals that are precisely tailored to their specific daily nutritional needs. Through simulation modeling, a single model can be created for automated systems to determine daily rations for farm animals. For the purposes of this document, precision livestock feeding refers to the practice of tailoring feed to individual animals or groups of animals, taking into account their changing nutritional needs over time and individual differences in terms of nutritional requirements. The practice aims to optimize animal health and performance while reducing feed waste. This paper presents a formal model for determining the quantities of components needed to achieve a minimum cost mixture that satisfies compositional and quantitative criteria. The present research calculates the amount of hay and silage required to feed an animal per day at the most economical cost by applying an optimization approach that involves defining and solving an optimization problem. The problem is solved using a well-known software package, which is necessary for the practical application of the resulting model. Real data from livestock production in Bulgaria are used to numerically test the model.

Abstract:The purpose of this study was to evaluate the performance of various prediction models in estimating the growth and morphological traits of pure Hair, Alpine × Hair F1 (AHF1), and Saanen × Hair F1 (SHF1) hybrid offspring at yearling age by employing early body measurement records from birth till 9th month combined with meteorological data, in an extensive natural pasture-based system. The study also included other factors such as sex, farm, doe and buck IDs, birth type, gestation length, age of the doe at birth etc. For this purpose, seven different machine learning algorithms-linear regression, artificial neural network (ANN), support vector machines (SVM), decision tree, random forest, extra gradient boosting (XGB) and ExtraTree - were applied to the data coming from 1530 goat offspring in Türkiye. Early predictions of growth and morphological traits at yearling age; such as live weight (LW), body length (BL), wither height (WH), rump height (RH), rump width (RW), leg circumference (LC), shinbone girth (SG), chest width (CW), chest girth (CG) and chest depth (CD) were performed by using birth date measurements only, up to month-3, month-6 and month-9 records. Satisfactory predictive performances were achieved once the records after 6th month were used. In extensive natural pasture-based systems, this approach may serve as an effective indirect selection method for breeders. Using month-9 records, the predictions were improved, where LW and BL were found with the highest performance in terms of coefficient of determination (R2 score of 0.81 ± 0.00) by ExtraTree. As one of the rarely applied machine learning models in animal studies, we have shown the capacity of this algorithm. Overall, the current study offers utilization of the meteorological data combined with animal records by machine learning models as an alternative decision-making tool for goat farming.
Growth Model Prediction and Trend Analysis of Hu Sheep and Their Hybrid Progeny in the Arid and Cold Area of Northwest China

Abstract:In this study,the body weight of 215 Hu sheep and 60 Hu×(Dorper×Hu)hybrid lambs were meas-ured from 0 to 12 months’age under the condition of barn feeding.The growth process of lambs was matched by Compertz and Logistic models.The growth parameter and estimated value of the models were analyzed to e-valuate the hybrid effect of Hu×(Dorper×Hu)hybrid lambs.The results showed that the fitting degrees (R 2 ) of the two models were over 0.96.The fitting effect of the Gompertz model was better than that of the Logistic model.The day of growth inflection points of Hu sheep rams and ewes were 2.55 and 1.73 months,while the weights at inflection point were 17.00 kg and 13.14 kg respectively.The day of growth inflection point of Hu ×(Dorper×Hu)hybrid lambs was earlier than that of Hu sheep,and the weights at inflection point were 17.74 kg and 15.80 kg respectively.The cumulative growth pole of Hu × (Dorper × Hu)was significantly higher than that of Hu sheep (P <0.01).These results indicate that the growth speed of Hu×(Dorper×Hu) hybrid lambs is faster than Hu sheep in early stages and that hybrid effects are evident.

Abstract:Automatic animal monitoring can bring several advantages to the livestock sector. The emergence of low-cost and low-power miniaturized sensors, together with the ability of handling huge amounts of data, has led to a boost of new intelligent farming solutions. One example is the SheepIT solution that is being commercialized by iFarmtec. The main objectives of the solution are monitoring the sheep's posture while grazing in vineyards, and conditioning their behaviour using appropriate stimuli, such that they only feed from the ground or from the lower branches of the vines. The quality of the monitoring procedure has a linear correlation with the animal condition capability of the solution, i.e., on the effectiveness of the applied stimuli. Thus, a Real-Time mechanism capable of identifying animal behaviour such as infraction, eating, walking or running movements and standing position is required. On a previous work we proposed a solution based on low-power microcontrollers enclosed in collars wearable by sheep. Machine Learning techniques have been rising as a useful tool for dealing with big amounts of data. From the wide range of techniques available, the use of Decision Trees is particularly relevant since it allows the retrieval of a set of conditions easily transformed in lightweight machine code.The goal of this paper is to evaluate an enhanced animal monitoring mechanism and compare it to existing ones. In order to achieve this goal, a real deployment scenario was availed to gather relevant data from sheep's collar. After this step, we evaluated the impact of several feature transformations and pre-processing techniques on the model learned from the system. Due to the natural behaviour of sheep, which spend most of the time grazing, several pre-processing techniques were tested to deal with the unbalanced dataset, particularly resorting on features related with stateful history. Albeit presenting promising results, with accuracy over 96%, these features resulted in unfeasible implementations. Hence, the best feasible model was achieved with 10 features obtained from the sensors' measurements plus an additional temporal feature. The global accuracy attained was above 91%. Howbeit, further research shall assess a way of dealing with this kind of unbalanced datasets and take advantage of the insights given by the results achieved when using the state's history.

Abstract:Community-based breeding programs (CBBPs) have shown, at pilot scale, to be effective and beneficial in achieving genetic progress and in improving livelihoods of smallholder communities. In Ethiopia 134 sheep and goat CBBPs were operational producing their own improved rams and bucks. Based on experience the implementation of further programs is possible with appropriate private and public support. A different challenge is the efficient dissemination of the improved genetics produced in current CBBPs to create population-wide economic impact. We present a framework applied to the Ethiopian Washera sheep breed to meet this challenge. We propose the establishment of a genetic improvement structure that supports a meat commercialization model based on the integration of community-based breeding program cooperatives, client communities and complementary services such as fattening enterprises. We calculated that the recently established 28 community-based breeding programs in the Washera breeding tract can provide genetically improved rams to 22% of the four million head. To reach the whole population 152 additional CBBPs are needed. We simulated the genetic improvements obtainable in the current 28 CBBPs assuming realized genetic progress in CBBPs of a similar breed and calculated the expected additional lamb carcass meat production after 10 years of selection to be 7 tons and the accumulated discounted benefit 327 thousand USD. These benefits could be increased if the CBBPs are linked to client communities by providing them with improved rams: additional meat production would be 138 tons with a value of 3,088 thousand USD. The total meat production of the existing Washera CBBPs was calculated at 152 tons and the joint meat production of CBBPs if integrated with client communities would be 3,495 tons. A full integration model, which includes enterprises purchasing lambs for fattening, can produce up to 4,255 tons of meat. We conclude that Washera CBBPs cooperatives can benefit from a higher level of organization to produce population-wide genetic improvement and economic benefits. Unlike in the dairy and chicken industries, for low input sheep and goat smallholder systems the proposed commercialization model puts breeder cooperatives at the center of the operation. Cooperatives need to be capacitated and supported to become fully functional business ventures.

Abstract:SPSS syntax was described to evaluate the individual performance of 49 linear and non-linear models to fit the milk component evolution curve of 159 Murciano-Granadina does selected for genotyping analyses. Peak and persistence for protein, fat, dry matter, lactose, and somatic cell counts were evaluated using 3107 controls (3.91 ± 2.01 average lactations/goat). Best-fit (adjusted R2) values (0.548, 0.374, 0.429, and 0.624 for protein, fat, dry matter, and lactose content, respectively) were reached by the five-parameter logarithmic model of Ali and Schaeffer (ALISCH), and for the three-parameter model of parabolic yield-density (PARYLDENS) for somatic cell counts (0.481). Cross-validation was performed using the Minimum Mean-Square Error (MMSE). Model comparison was performed using Residual Sum of Squares (RSS), Mean-Squared Prediction Error (MSPE), adjusted R2 and its standard deviation (SD), Akaike (AIC), corrected Akaike (AICc), and Bayesian information criteria (BIC). The adjusted R2 SD across individuals was around 0.2 for all models. Thirty-nine models successfully fitted the individual lactation curve for all components. Parametric and computational complexity promote variability-capturing properties, while model flexibility does not significantly (p > 0.05) improve the predictive and explanatory potential. Conclusively, ALISCH and PARYLDENS can be used to study goat milk composition genetic variability as trustable evaluation models to face future challenges of the goat dairy industry.
Genome-Wide Association Studies for Growth and Meat Production Traits in Sheep

Abstract:BACKGROUND:Growth and meat production traits are significant economic traits in sheep. The aim of the study is to identify candidate genes affecting growth and meat production traits at genome level with high throughput single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) genotyping technologies.METHODOLOGY AND RESULTS:Using Illumina OvineSNP50 BeadChip, we performed a GWA study in 329 purebred sheep for 11 growth and meat production traits (birth weight, weaning weight, 6-month weight, eye muscle area, fat thickness, pre-weaning gain, post-weaning gain, daily weight gain, height at withers, chest girth, and shin circumference). After quality control, 319 sheep and 48,198 SNPs were analyzed by TASSEL program in a mixed linear model (MLM). 36 significant SNPs were identified for 7 traits, and 10 of them reached genome-wise significance level for post-weaning gain. Gene annotation was implemented with the latest sheep genome Ovis_aries_v3.1 (released October 2012). More than one-third SNPs (14 out of 36) were located within ovine genes, others were located close to ovine genes (878bp-398,165bp apart). The strongest new finding is 5 genes were thought to be the most crucial candidate genes associated with post-weaning gain: s58995.1 was located within the ovine genes MEF2B and RFXANK, OAR3_84073899.1, OAR3_115712045.1 and OAR9_91721507.1 were located within CAMKMT, TRHDE, and RIPK2 respectively. GRM1, POL, MBD5, UBR2, RPL7 and SMC2 were thought to be the important candidate genes affecting post-weaning gain too. Additionally, 25 genes at chromosome-wise significance level were also forecasted to be the promising genes that influencing sheep growth and meat production traits.CONCLUSIONS:The results will contribute to the similar studies and facilitate the potential utilization of genes involved in growth and meat production traits in sheep in future.
Contribution of gut microbiomes and their metabolomes to the performance of Dorper and Tan sheep

Abstract:Background: Livestock is an excellent source of high nutritional value protein for humans; breeding livestock is focused on improving meat productivity and quality. Dorper sheep is a distinguished breed with an excellent growth performance, while Tan sheep is a Chinese local breed famous for its delicious meat. Several studies have demonstrated that the composition of gut microbiome and metabolome modulate host phenotype. Methods: In the present study, we performed 16S amplicon sequencing and metabolomic analyses of the rumen and hindgut microbiome of 8-month-old Dorper and Tan sheep, raised under identical feeding and management conditions, to explore the potential effects of gut microbiome and its metabolites on growth performance and meat quality. Results: Our study identified Lactobacillus , a marker genus in the rumen, to be significantly associated with the levels of fumaric acid, nicotinic acid, and 2-deoxyadenosine ( P -value < 0.05). Statistical analysis showed that nicotinic acid was significantly negatively correlated with body weight ( P -value < 0.01), while 2-deoxyadenosine was significantly positively correlated with fatty acids content ( P -value < 0.05). There was a biologically significant negative correlation between Phascolarctobacterium and deoxycytidine levels in the hindgut. Deoxycytidine was significantly positively correlated with body weight, protein, and amino acid content. Differences in rumen fermentation patterns that are distinctive among breeds were identified. Tan sheep mainly used Lactobacillus and fumaric acid-mediated pyruvic acid for energy supply, while Dorper sheep utilize glycogenic amino acids. The difference of iron metabolism in the hindgut of Dorper sheep affects lipid production, while Phascolarctobacterium in Tan sheep is related to roughage tolerance. The accumulation of nucleosides promotes the growth performance of Dorper sheep. Conclusion: These findings provide insights into how the microbiome-metabolome-dependent mechanisms contribute to growth rate and fat contents in different breeds. This fundamental research is vital to identifying the dominant traits of breeds, improving growth rate and meat quality, and establishing principles for precision feeding.

A total of 32 lambs (16 Improved Jezersko-Solčava - JSR and 16 crossbreds with Texel - JSRT, 8 males and 8 females within each genotype) were included in the study. The lambs were grazed together with their dams from the beginning of the grazing period and had free access to commercial concentrate from the age of 10 days. Lambs were weaned at the average body weight of 22.9 kg. Feeding with a concentrate was finished when lambs achieved 35 kg of body weight and were slaughtered. Daily gains from birth to slaughter and from weaning to slaughter were calculated. Several carcass traits were determined. JSRT lambs had significantly higher daily gain from birth to slaughter, hot and cold carcass weights, and dressing percentages compared to JSR lambs. Carcass conformation was higher in JSRT than JSR carcasses. Also, carcasses of JSRT were shorter and wider than JSR carcasses. Rib eye muscle areas of JSRT lambs were significantly larger, and the colour was significantly lighter. Males had significantly higher average daily gain from birth to slaughter and from weaning to slaughter than females. Females had higher dressing percentages and subcutaneous and internal fatness scores than males. Females had significantly higher amount of kidney fat. The colour of males’ meat was significantly lighter than that of females. Crossbreeding with Texel rams improved growth and carcass traits of lambs, and males had better growth performance and several carcass traits than females. Abstract:In order to describe the growth curves in Iranian Mehraban sheep, five non-linear mathematical equations (Brody, Negative exponential, Logistic, Gompertz and Von Bertalanffy) were used. The data set used in this study was obtained from the Agricultural Organization of Hamedan province and comprised 35,414 weight records of lambs which were collected from birth to 365 days of age during 1991–2011. Each model was fitted separately to body weight records of all lambs, male and female lambs and single and twin lambs using the NLIN and MODEL procedures in SAS. The models were tested for goodness of fit using adjusted coefficient of determination ( ), root mean square error (RMSE), Durbin–Watson statistic (DW), Akaike’s information criterion (AIC) and Bayesian information criterion (BIC). The Brody model provided the best fit of growth curve in all lambs, male and female lambs and single and twin lambs due to the lower values of AIC and BIC than other models. The Logistic model provided the worst fit of growth curve for all lambs, male and female lambs and single and twin lambs. Evaluation of different growth equations used in this study indicated the potential of the non-linear functions for fitting body weight records of Mehraban sheep.

Abstract:Solenogastres (Aplacophora) is a small clade of marine, shell-less worm-molluscs with close to 300 valid species. Their distribution ranges across all oceans, and whereas the vast majority of species has been collected and described from the continental shelf and slope, only few species are known from depths below 4000 m. Following traditional taxonomy, identification of specimens to species level is complex and time-consuming and requires detailed investigations of morphology and anatomy – often resulting in the exclusion of the clade in biodiversity or biogeographic studies. During the KuramBio expedition (Kuril-Kamchatka Biodiversity Studies) to the abyssal plain of the Northwest Pacific and the Kuril-Kamchatka trench, 33 solenogaster specimens were sampled from 4830 m to 5397m. Within this study we present an efficient workflow to address solenogaster diversity, even when confronted with a high degree of singletons and minute body sizes, hampering the use of single individuals for multiple morphological and molecular approaches. We combine analyses of external characters and scleritome with molecular barcoding based on a self-designed solenogaster specific set of mitochondrial primers. Overall we were able to delineate at least 19 solenogaster lineages and identify 15 species to family level and beyond. Based on our approach we identified three key lineages from the two regionally most species-rich families (Acanthomeniidae and Pruvotinidae) for deeper taxonomic investigations and describe the novel abyssal species Amboherpia abyssokurilensis sp. nov. (Cavibelonia, Acanthomeniidae) using microanatomical 3D-reconstructions. Our study more than doubles the previous records of solenogaster species from the Northwest Pacific and its marginal seas. Almost all lineages are reported for the first time from the region of the (Northwest) Pacific, vastly expanding distribution ranges of the respective clades. Moreover it doubles the number of Solenogastres collected from abyssal depths on a global scale and underlines the lack of exploratory α-diversity work in the abyssal zone for reliable species estimates in marine biodiversity.

Abstract:The role of psychological criteria in guiding treatment decisions about growth hormone (GH) replacement in idiopathic short stature (ISS) is a current topic of debate. This summary discusses findings about the impact of short stature in terms of observer-rated and patient-reported psychological outcomes. Although a literature review did not provide conclusive evidence for differences in psychological status between short children and children of normal height in the general population, patients and parents, when probed, reported issues, especially in the social domain. Studies do not clearly suggest that the diagnosis of ISS or GH deficiency is related to impaired psychological functioning; they also do not imply that height is the only determinant of psychological status. Similarly, results on treatment-related changes in psychological status are equivocal. Assessment of psychological status should be included in future research and in the current clinical care of patients with ISS. Accumulating evidence suggests that assessment of psychological criteria may become a factor in guiding treatment decisions in patients with ISS.

Abstract:In the realm of animal phenotyping, manual measurements are frequently utilised. While machine-generated data show potential for enhancing high-throughput breeding, additional research and validation are imperative before incorporating them into genetic evaluation processes. This research presents a method for managing meat sheep and collecting data, utilising the Sheep Data Recorder system for data input and the Sheep Body Size Collector system for image capture. The study aimed to investigate the genetic parameter changes of growth traits in Ujumqin sheep by comparing machine-generated measurements with manual measurements. The dataset consisted of 552 data points from the offspring of 75 breeding rams and 399 breeding ewes. Six distinct random regression models were assessed to pinpoint the most suitable model for estimating genetic parameters linked to growth traits. These models were distinguished based on the inclusion or exclusion of maternal genetic effects, maternal permanent environmental effects, and covariance between maternal and direct genetic effects. Fixed factors such as individual age, individual sex, and ewe age were taken into account in the analysis. The genetic parameters for the yearling growth traits of Ujumqin sheep were calculated using ASReml software. The Akaike information criterion, the Bayesian information criterion, and fivefold cross-validation were employed to identify the optimal model. Research findings indicate that the most accurate models for manually measured data revealed heritability estimates of 0.12 ± 0.15 for BW, 0.05 ± 0.07 for body slanting length, 0.03 ± 0.07 for withers height, 0.15 ± 0.12 for hip height, 0.11 ± 0.11 for chest depth, 0.13 ± 0.13 for shoulder width, and 0.53 ± 0.15 for chest circumference. The optimal models for machine-predicted data showed heritability estimates of 0.1 ± 0.09 for body slanting length, 0.14 ± 0.12 for withers height, 0.55 ± 0.15 for hip height, 0.34 ± 0.15 for chest depth, 0.26 ± 0.15 for shoulder width, and 0.47 ± 0.16 for chest circumference. In manually measured data, genetic correlations ranged from 0.35 to 0.99, while phenotypic correlations ranged from 0.07 to 0.90. In machine data, genetic correlations ranged from -0.05 to 0.99, while phenotypic correlations ranged from 0.03 to 0.84. The results suggest that machine-based estimations may lead to an overestimation of heritability, but this discrepancy does not impact the selection of breeding models.
