Abstract:As the economic level of individuals rises, so too does the demand for mutton. Enhancing the breeds of mutton sheep not only boosts production efficiency and economic benefits but also fosters the sustainable growth of the mutton sheep breeding industry. Thus, this study examines the early growth and reproductive traits of Tianmu Sainuo sheep, analyzing the genetic interactions among these traits to furnish a theoretical foundation for refining breeding strategies and expediting the genetic advancement of this breed. The investigation compiled 29,966 data entries, involving 111 sires for birth weight (BWT) and 113 for other metrics. The data encompassed 10,415 BWT records from 1,633 dams, 12,753 weaning weight (WWT) records from 1,570 dams, 12,793 average daily gain (ADG) records from 1,597 dams, and 13,594 litter size (LS) records from 1,499 dams. Utilizing the GLM procedure in SAS 9.2 software, the study analyzed the non-genetic influences on lamb BWT, WWT, ADG, and LS. Concurrently, DMU software estimated the variance components across various animal models for each trait. Employing the Akaike Information Criterion (AIC) and likelihood ratio test (LRT), six models were tested, incorporating or excluding maternal inheritance and environmental impacts, to identify the optimal model for deriving genetic parameters. The findings reveal that birth year (BY), birth quarter (BQ), birth type (BT), age of mother (AM), and birth sex (BS) exerted significant impacts on BWT, WWT, and ADG ( p < 0.01). Additionally, BQ and AM significantly influenced LS ( p < 0.01). The most accurate genetic evaluation model determined the heritability of BWT, WWT, ADG, and LS to be 0.0695, 0.0849, 0.0777, and 0.1252, respectively.

Abstract:Qianhua Mutton Merino is a dual-purpose (meat and wool) breed of sheep that has been newly developed in China. In this study, we assessed the growth and development of the Qianhua Mutton Merino sheep breed under house feeding conditions by measuring the body weight and chest circumference of 2300 rams and ewes of this breed aged 0–24 months. Based on the fitting results of three nonlinear growth models, namely Logistic, Gompertz, and von Bertalanffy, in Qianhua Mutton Merino, we selected the von Bertalanffy model because of its highest fitting degree among all models (R2 > 0.977). The significant analysis of the combined fixation of each sheep body's weight and bust took place (A: mature body weight, B: adjustment parameter, K: instant relative growth rate). The results revealed that parameters A, B, and K of body weight and chest circumference have high heritability and thus could be used as target traits for genetic improvement. Moreover, the correlation strength among A, B, and K suggested that these parameters can be used as a reference to adjust the genetic parameters in the growth model to genetically improve the body size of Qianhua Mutton Merino during breeding.

Abstract:In the realm of animal phenotyping, manual measurements are frequently utilised. While machine-generated data show potential for enhancing high-throughput breeding, additional research and validation are imperative before incorporating them into genetic evaluation processes. This research presents a method for managing meat sheep and collecting data, utilising the Sheep Data Recorder system for data input and the Sheep Body Size Collector system for image capture. The study aimed to investigate the genetic parameter changes of growth traits in Ujumqin sheep by comparing machine-generated measurements with manual measurements. The dataset consisted of 552 data points from the offspring of 75 breeding rams and 399 breeding ewes. Six distinct random regression models were assessed to pinpoint the most suitable model for estimating genetic parameters linked to growth traits. These models were distinguished based on the inclusion or exclusion of maternal genetic effects, maternal permanent environmental effects, and covariance between maternal and direct genetic effects. Fixed factors such as individual age, individual sex, and ewe age were taken into account in the analysis. The genetic parameters for the yearling growth traits of Ujumqin sheep were calculated using ASReml software. The Akaike information criterion, the Bayesian information criterion, and fivefold cross-validation were employed to identify the optimal model. Research findings indicate that the most accurate models for manually measured data revealed heritability estimates of 0.12 ± 0.15 for BW, 0.05 ± 0.07 for body slanting length, 0.03 ± 0.07 for withers height, 0.15 ± 0.12 for hip height, 0.11 ± 0.11 for chest depth, 0.13 ± 0.13 for shoulder width, and 0.53 ± 0.15 for chest circumference. The optimal models for machine-predicted data showed heritability estimates of 0.1 ± 0.09 for body slanting length, 0.14 ± 0.12 for withers height, 0.55 ± 0.15 for hip height, 0.34 ± 0.15 for chest depth, 0.26 ± 0.15 for shoulder width, and 0.47 ± 0.16 for chest circumference. In manually measured data, genetic correlations ranged from 0.35 to 0.99, while phenotypic correlations ranged from 0.07 to 0.90. In machine data, genetic correlations ranged from -0.05 to 0.99, while phenotypic correlations ranged from 0.03 to 0.84. The results suggest that machine-based estimations may lead to an overestimation of heritability, but this discrepancy does not impact the selection of breeding models.

Abstract:The random regression model methodology was applied into the estimation of genetic parameters for body weights in Chinese Simmental cattle to replace the traditional multiple trait models. The variance components were estimated using Gibbs sampling procedure on Bayesion theory. The data were extracted for Chinese Simmental cattle born during 1980 to 2000 from 6 national breeding farms, where records from 3 months to 36 months were only used in this study. A 3 orders Legendre polynomial was defined as the submodel to describe the general law of that body weight changing with months of age in population. The heritabilities of body weights from 3 months to 36 months varied between 0.31 and 0.48, where the heritabilities from 3 months to 12 months slightly decreased with months of age but ones from 13 months to 36 months increased with months of age. Specially, the heritabilities at eighteenth and twenty-fourth month of age were 0.33 and 0.36, respectively, which were slightly greater than 0.30 and 0.31 from multiple trait models. In addition, the genetic and phenotypic correlations between body weights at different month ages were also obtained using regression model.

Abstract:Increased body growth and feed efficiency are important for breeding due to expensive feed costs. This study estimated the genetic parameters for two feed efficiency traits [the feed conversion ratio (FCR) and the residual feed intake (RFI)] and other important economic traits in male Hu sheep using 1642 male Hu lambs. The heritability of the RFI was estimated at 0.31 (±0.10)–0.54 (±0.1) and the heritability of the FCR was 0.05 (±0.07)–0.77 (±0.12). There was a negative genetic correlation between rib-eye muscle area traits and RFI. A positive genetic correlation was found between fat deposition traits and feed efficiency traits. The digestive tract weight decreased with the direction of RFI: however, the FCR showed the opposite: A low FCR was accompanied by a high digestive tract weight. The genetic correlation between feed efficiency (RFI and FCR) and rumen weight was negative. Heritability estimates for feed efficiency generate fluctuations with different experimental intervals. The weight of other traits should be reasonably allocated to avoid losses in production and feed efficiency in the selection of feed efficiency traits. The present study added to our understanding of the genetic parameters of sheep under the condition of house feeding.

Abstract:BACKGROUND:Growth and meat production traits are significant economic traits in sheep. The aim of the study is to identify candidate genes affecting growth and meat production traits at genome level with high throughput single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) genotyping technologies.METHODOLOGY AND RESULTS:Using Illumina OvineSNP50 BeadChip, we performed a GWA study in 329 purebred sheep for 11 growth and meat production traits (birth weight, weaning weight, 6-month weight, eye muscle area, fat thickness, pre-weaning gain, post-weaning gain, daily weight gain, height at withers, chest girth, and shin circumference). After quality control, 319 sheep and 48,198 SNPs were analyzed by TASSEL program in a mixed linear model (MLM). 36 significant SNPs were identified for 7 traits, and 10 of them reached genome-wise significance level for post-weaning gain. Gene annotation was implemented with the latest sheep genome Ovis_aries_v3.1 (released October 2012). More than one-third SNPs (14 out of 36) were located within ovine genes, others were located close to ovine genes (878bp-398,165bp apart). The strongest new finding is 5 genes were thought to be the most crucial candidate genes associated with post-weaning gain: s58995.1 was located within the ovine genes MEF2B and RFXANK, OAR3_84073899.1, OAR3_115712045.1 and OAR9_91721507.1 were located within CAMKMT, TRHDE, and RIPK2 respectively. GRM1, POL, MBD5, UBR2, RPL7 and SMC2 were thought to be the important candidate genes affecting post-weaning gain too. Additionally, 25 genes at chromosome-wise significance level were also forecasted to be the promising genes that influencing sheep growth and meat production traits.CONCLUSIONS:The results will contribute to the similar studies and facilitate the potential utilization of genes involved in growth and meat production traits in sheep in future.
Growth Model Prediction and Trend Analysis of Hu Sheep and Their Hybrid Progeny in the Arid and Cold Area of Northwest China

Abstract:In this study,the body weight of 215 Hu sheep and 60 Hu×(Dorper×Hu)hybrid lambs were meas-ured from 0 to 12 months’age under the condition of barn feeding.The growth process of lambs was matched by Compertz and Logistic models.The growth parameter and estimated value of the models were analyzed to e-valuate the hybrid effect of Hu×(Dorper×Hu)hybrid lambs.The results showed that the fitting degrees (R 2 ) of the two models were over 0.96.The fitting effect of the Gompertz model was better than that of the Logistic model.The day of growth inflection points of Hu sheep rams and ewes were 2.55 and 1.73 months,while the weights at inflection point were 17.00 kg and 13.14 kg respectively.The day of growth inflection point of Hu ×(Dorper×Hu)hybrid lambs was earlier than that of Hu sheep,and the weights at inflection point were 17.74 kg and 15.80 kg respectively.The cumulative growth pole of Hu × (Dorper × Hu)was significantly higher than that of Hu sheep (P <0.01).These results indicate that the growth speed of Hu×(Dorper×Hu) hybrid lambs is faster than Hu sheep in early stages and that hybrid effects are evident.

Abstract:Investigating genetic markers and key genes associated with sheep growth rate using integrated multi-omics approaches could provide valuable insights for the sheep industry. Based on the average daily gain (ADG), fast-growing (Ncase=70) and slow-growing (Ncontrol=70) Hu sheep were selected for a genome-wide association study (GWAS). Ten Hu sheep (fast-growing, n = 5; slow-growing, n = 5) and ten Dorper sheep (fast-growing, n = 5; slow-growing, n=5) were selected for comparative transcriptome analysis. We identified hub genes and tissue-specific genes (TSGs) using weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA) and RNA sequencing (RNA-Seq) data from ten tissues, respectively. Ten genes were found within 50 kb distances of the significant single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). Based on a comparative transcriptomic analysis, a total of 501 and 441 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified in the HF vs. HS and DF vs. DS comparisons, respectively. We found some important signaling pathways closely associated with fat metabolism and energy metabolism, such as “regulation of lipolysis in adipocytes”, “Oxidative phosphorylation”, and “Thermogenesis”. Several DEGs play a crucial role in fat deposition (such as ADRB3, PDE3B, FABP4, SERPINE1, PLIN1, and FOXO6) and muscle development (MYL3). Using the WGCNA analysis, 15 genes were considered as hub genes associated with ADG. Integration of GWAS and RNA-Seq data indicates that BRINP3 and PENK may further influence the growth rate by regulating feeding behavior in sheep. Association analysis of 1,071 Hu sheep populations revealed that mutations in the BRINP3 (BRINP3 g.16903465 T>C) and PENK (PENK g.39289926 T>C) genes were significantly related to the growth traits (P < 0.05). Our research provides novel insights into understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying growth traits in sheep. BRINP3 and PENK genes may be potential key candidate genes related to sheep growth rate.
Meta‐analysis of genetic parameters for growth traits in meat, wool and dual‐purpose sheep breeds in the world using a random‐effects model

Abstract:BACKGROUND: There is large variation in genetic parameters in literature for growth traits in sheep. Reliable estimation of genetic parameters is required for developing breeding programmes.OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to aggregate results of different studies by meta-analysis to improve reliability of estimated parameters.METHODS: In the current study, 221 papers that have been published between 1995 and 2021 were reviewed. Using a random-effects model in the Comprehensive Meta-Analysis software, direct and maternal heritabilities, as well as, genetic and phenotypic correlations between growth traits were estimated in meat (M), wool (W) and dual-purpose (D) sheep breeds. The growth traits in this study were birth weight, 3-month weight, 6-month weight, 9-month weight and yearling weight.RESULTS: The combined direct heritability was the lowest for birth weight (0.190 ± 0.004, 0.198 ± 0.003 and 0.196 ± 0.004 for M, W and D breeds, respectively) and the highest for yearling weight (0.264 ± 0.010, 0.304 ± 0.005 and 0.285 ± 0.020 for M, W and D breeds, respectively). The maternal heritability was the lowest for yearling weight (0.085 ± 0.003, 0.055 ± 0.002 and 0.052 ± 0.005 for M, W and D breeds, respectively) and the highest for 6-month weight (0.240 ± 0.088, 0.164 ± 0.001 and 0.162 ± 0.006 for M, W and D breeds, respectively). The phenotypic and genetic correlations were lower between the weights measured at more distant intervals. The lowest genetic correlation was observed between birth weight and yearling weight (0.290 ± 0.051 for W breeds).CONCLUSIONS: The small standard errors could indicate that the aggregation of results from different studies improved the reliability of estimated parameters and reduced range of 95% confidence intervals. Hence, the results could be used with greater level of confidence in sheep breeding programmes.

Malakoplakia of prostate as a complication of transrectal needle biopsy.

Abstract:We report a case of a 72-year-old male that underwent two sets of transrectal prostatic needle biopsy (TPNB) within 9 month period. Pathology showed unremarkable benign prostatic tissues in the first group of biopsies while extensive diffuse inflammation with the characteristic features of malakoplakia in the second set. Three cores in the repeat biopsy contained foci of prostatic adenocarcinoma as well. Occurrence of malakoplakia several months after TPNB in our case suggests that microorganisms may have been inoculated to the prostate during the biopsy procedure. We believe that malakoplakia must be added to the list of complications after TPNB.

Abstract:Xinjiang is a major province of sheep breeding in China, which plays an important role in meeting people's needs for meat products, increasing farmers' income and sustainable development of animal husbandry. However, the genetic differentiation relationship between breeds was not clear, and most sheep had low fecundity, which seriously restricted the efficient development of sheep industry. Therefore, this study used the whole genome resequencing to detect the genetic variation of Dexin mutton and fine-wool sheep, explored the selected regions and important genes of the litter size traits, analyzed the genetic mechanism of reproductive traits, and provided new insights for the high fecundity breeding of sheep. A total of 5,236.338 G genome data and 35,884,037 SNPs were obtained. Furthermore, we identified 39 selection signals spanning candidate genes, 99 genes were significantly associated related to growth, reproduction and immunity, among which, BRIP1, BMPR1B, BMP4, NGF, etc. genes, and MAKP signaling pathway, Fanconi anemia pathway and Thyroid hormone signaling pathway and other signaling pathways were significantly correlated with litter size trait. Among them, we identified NGF, TrKA and BRIP1 genes was the important genes for sheep litter size traits and the mutation frequencies of 9 SNPs in BRIP1 gene were significantly different in domestic sheep in the world. The research provided new insights for the breeding of self-cultivated meat fine-wool sheep.

Abstract:Estimating genetic parameters for growth traits is crucial to plan breeding strategies for improving meat production in indigenous sheep breeds. The study first tested the effects of environmental and maternal effects on five growth traits, including birth weight (BWT), weight at 120 days (WT120), weight at 180 days (WT180), weight at 270 days (WT270) and weight at 365 days of age (WT365) and then estimated genetic parameters for these traits using data obtained in 1215 Lohi sheep. The effects of factors, including year (YOB), season (SOB) and type of birth (TOB), age of dam (AOD) and sex on growth traits of Lohi sheep, were examined using analysis of variance (ANOVA) in R software. Sex, TOB and YOB significantly affected all studied traits. The estimates of direct and maternal heritability for BWT and WT120 were 0.15 ± 0.08 and 0.20 ± 0.06, and 0.45 ± 0.16, 0.21 ± 0.08, respectively. The direct heritability estimates for WT180, WT270 and WT365 were 0.20 ± 0.07, 0.21 ± 0.07 and 0.19 ± 0.08, respectively. Due to the high heritability estimate obtained for WT120 compared to other studied traits, and its strong genetic correlation (>0.9) with post-weaning growth traits, it is recommended that selection must be practiced on WT120 to improve the growth performance of Lohi sheep. The results could be used for the development of genetic/genomic selection programs aiming to improve the production performance of the Lohi sheep.

Abstract:Genetic and phenotypic parameters were estimated for various traits of Farta and their crosses with Washera sheep in northwest Ethiopia. Data collected from 2015 to 2020 on 4318 lambs were used. A number of models were evaluated, all contained the direct additive animal genetic effect and then, either the maternal genetic or permanent environment or both effects. The estimates of direct heritability for birth weight, weaning weight, pre-weaning daily gain, six-month weight, yearling weight and pre-weaning lamb survival were 0.08 ± 0.03, 0.20 ± 0.05, 0.15 ± 0.05, 0.24 ± 0.06, 0.29 ± 0.14 and 0.14 ± 0.04, respectively. The maternal heritabilities were 0.29 ± 0.05, 0.31 ± 0.05, 0.40 ± 0.05, 0.15 ± 0.57 and 0.02 ± 0.15 for weaning weight, pre-weaning daily gain, six-month weight, yearling weight and pre-weaning lamb survival, respectively. Genetic correlation between birth weight and pre-weaning lamb survival was negative (−0.36 ± 0.22), implying heavier lambs have low pre-weaning survival. For the other pairs of traits, genetic correlations ranging from 0.10 ± 0.16 between yearling weight and pre-weaning lamb survival to 0.98 ± 0.01 between weaning weight and pre-weaning daily gain were estimated. Overall, the present study showed that heritability is more likely to be overestimated if the maternal genetic and permanent environment effects are not taken into account. Parameters estimated in the current study can be used to design sheep breeding programs.

Abstract:Growth traits are economically important traits in sheep breeding. This study was conducted to evaluate the polymorphisms of ALB, AHSG and GC genes and their association with growth traits in Hu sheep. We measured and recorded the body weight (BW), body height (BH), body length (BL) and feed conversion ratio (FCR) of 1418 male Hu sheep raised in the same environment from 80 to 180 days of age. The total of four SNPs in the ALB, AHSG and GC genes were identified by direct sequencing technology. The results of association analysis showed that two loci (g.8699 A>T and g.13458 T>C) of ALB gene significantly affect average daily gain (ADG; P < 0.05). The genotypes of SNP g.2454 T>C in AHSG gene were significantly associated with ADG and FCR (P < 0.05). There were significant associations between GC g.19484 A>C and BW, BH and BL (P < 0.05). The results of qRT-PCR showed that ALB, AHSG, and GC genes were extremely significantly higher in H_BW sheep compared with those in the L_BW sheep (P < 0.01). These results revealed that ALB-1 g.8699 A>T, ALB-2 g.13458 T>C, AHSG g.2454 T>C and GC g.19484 A>C loci are potential molecular markers for Hu sheep breeding.

Abstract:The objective of this study was to estimate group- and breed-specific genetic parameters for reproductive traits in Chinese Duroc, Landrace, and Yorkshire populations. Records for reproductive traits between April 1998 and December 2017 from 92 nucleus pig breeding farms, which were involved in the China Swine Genetic Improvement Program, were analysed. Due to weak genetic connectedness across all farms, connectedness groups consisting of related farms were used. Three, two and four connectedness groups for Duroc, Landrace and Yorkshire were firstly established according to the genetic connectedness rating among farms. For each connectedness group a five-trait animal model was implemented, and via restricted maximum likelihood procedure the genetic parameters were estimated for five reproductive traits i.e., total number born (TNB), number born alive (NBA), litter weight at farrowing (LWF), farrowing interval (FI) and age at first farrowing (AFF). The average of heritabilities among connectedness groups ranged from .01 (for FI in Yorkshire) to .30 (for AFF in Duroc). Estimates of repeatability for litter traits ranged from .14 to .20 and were consistent for each breed, and for FI, the estimates varied from .01 to .11 across breeds and groups. The estimated genetic correlations among litter traits (i.e., TNB, NBA and LWF) were all significantly high (>.56) and similar across breeds. Averaged genetic correlations over three breeds were -.25, -.27, -.18, -.04, -.10, -.02, and .28 for FI-TNB, FI-NBA, FI-LWF, AFF-TNB, AFF-NBA, AFF-LWF and FI-AFF, respectively. The standard errors of the estimates were all very low (<0.01) in most situations. Results from this study suggest that selection based on TNB which is currently used in dam line selection index can improve NBA and LWF simultaneously. However, care should be taken on FI and AFF as they are both greatly influenced by non-genetic factors such as management and measurement.
Growth and development characteristics and growth model of Hu sheep in the fattening period

Abstract:The body weight and body size of 207 male Hu lambs aged 0～180 days were measured under house feeding conditions, and three models, Logistic, Gompertz, and Von Bertalanffy, were used to fit the growth process of male Hu lambs from 0 to 180 days. We then analyzed and compared the growth parameters and model predicted values to evaluate the growth and development characteristics of Hu sheep. The results showed that the body weight and body size of male Hu lambs increased gradually from birth to 180 days. The male Hu lambs were at the peak of body weight growth from 0 to 160 days, but the development of body size occurred in stages, and the growth range of body size was different in each period. There was a significant positive correlation between body weight and body size (P < 0.01), and the correlation coefficient between body weight and chest circumference was the highest, followed by body length, body height, and circumference of cannon bone. The Logistic, Gompertz, and Von Bertalanffy models could fit the growth trend of Hu sheep from 0 to 180 days old, with R2 ≥ 0.995. By comparing the measured body weight with the predicted body weight estimated by the model, it is found that the Gompertz growth model has a more suitable fitting effect.

Abstract:Gompertz growth curve function was fitted to monthly live weight records (from birth to yearling) of Baluchi lambs. The data were from 7861 animals from 2 flocks. The growth curve parameters derived from the function for individual were used in estimation of genetic parameters. Least squares means for growth parameters of A (asymptomatic mature weight), B (maximum growth rate) and C (days in maximum growth rate) were 37.23(kg), 0.216(kg) and 48.30(days), respectively. The coefficient of determination and live weight at point of inflation were 0.99 and 13.7 kg, respectively. Year of birth, sex, type of birth and age of dam were significant sources of variation in growth curve parameters. Correlations of cross validation data indicated that multiple traits model produced higher accuracy in estimation of growth curve parameters. Heritability estimates for A, B and C were 0.3, 0.18 and 0.1, respectively. Genetic correlations between A and B and A and C were 0.86, 0.21, respectively. Genetic correlations between A, B, C and body weight at different ages were ranged between (0.43 to 0.98), (0.58 to 0.89) and (–0.59 to 0.30), respectively. There was a potential in genetic changes of growth pattern in Baluchi sheep. The 6 month weight in which lambs are less influenced by maternal effects and there are high genetic correlations between parameters, is one of desirable criteria selection to change growth pattern in Iranian Baluchi sheep.

Abstract:Sheep body size can directly reflect the growth rates and fattening rates of sheep and is also an important index for measuring the growth performance of meat sheep. In this study, high-resolution resequencing data from four sheep breeds (Dorper sheep, Suffolk sheep, Ouessant sheep, and Shetland sheep) were analyzed. The nonsynonymous single nucleotide polymorphisms of three candidate genes ( KIAA1217 , SNTA1 , and LTBP1 ) were also genotyped in 642 healthy Ujumqin sheep using MALDI-TOFMS and the genotyping results were associated with growth traits. The results showed that different genotypes of the KIAA1217 g.24429511T>C locus had significant effects on the chest circumferences of Ujumqin sheep. The SNTA1 g.62222626C>A locus had different effects on the chest depths, shoulder widths and rump widths of Ujumqin sheep. This study showed that these two sites can be used for marker-assisted selection, which will be beneficial for future precision molecular breeding.
