Abstract:Objectives: Firing protocols influence optical properties of dental ceramics. Effects of varying cooling rates of monochrome and multilayer 5 mol% yttria-stabilized tetragonal polycrystalline (5YTZP) on optical properties are subjected for investigation. Materials and methods: Ninety specimens (width, length, thickness = 10 × 20 × 2 mm) were prepared from monochrome (Mo: Cercon xt) and multilayer (Mu: Cercon xt ML with cervical (C) and incisal (I) zoning) 5YTZP. Specimens were sintered and randomly treated with three cooling rates (n = 15/group): slow (S: 5°C/min), normal (N: 35°C/min), and fast (F: 70°C/min). Color appearance (∆EW), color appearance difference (∆E diff), translucency parameter (TP), contrast ratio (CR), and opalescence parameter (OP) were evaluated in CIEL*a*b* (Commission International de I'Eclairage) system. ∆E diff was achieved from the coordinate difference of specimen to VITA classic shade A2. Microstructures and compositions were evaluated by scanning electron microscope and energy dispersive spectroscopy. Monoclinic (m), tetragonal (t), and cubic (c) phases were investigated with X-ray diffraction. Statistical analysis: An analysis of variance and Bonferroni multiple comparisons were determined for significant differences (p < 0.05). Results: ΔEW of MoF was highest (66.04 ± 1.86), while MuN-I was lowest (62.60 ± 0.86). TP and OP of MoS were highest at 2.85 ± 0.11, and 2.25 ± 0.10, while MuF-I was lowest at 2.16 ± 0.10 and 1.60 ± 0.12. CR of MuF-I was highest (0.948 ± 0.005), while MoS was lowest (0.936 ± 0.005). ΔEdiff of MoF was highest (3.83), while MuN-I was lowest (0.93). Limited grain growth and m-phase composition were indicated upon fast cooling. There were significant differences for all color parameters due to varied materials, cooling rates, and their interactions (p < 0.05) except for interaction in ∆EW and OP. Conclusions: Translucency of monochrome and multilayer 5YTZP were different, possibly due to colorant additives. Incisal layer of multilayer 5YTZP was perfectly matched with VITA shade. Increasing cooling speed resulted in smaller grain size, t-m transformation, and finally lower translucency and opalescence. Therefore, to achieve most favorable optical properties, slow cooling rate is recommended.

Abstract:Purpose The sintering technique and cooling strategy influence the strength of zirconia. This study examined the impact of altering the cooling rate of glass‐infiltrated monolayer and multilayer 5 mol% yttria‐partially stabilized zirconia (5Y‐PSZ) on their strength. Materials and Methods One‐hundred eighty (180) specimens (width × length × thickness = 10 × 20 × 2 mm) were prepared using monolayer (Mo: Cercon‐xt) and multilayer (Mu: Cercon‐xt ML) 5Y‐PSZ. Randomly distributed specimens (n = 15/group) were sintered with traditional (T) versus glass infiltrated (G) technique and cooled down with different cooling rates: slow (S: 5°C/min), normal (N: 35°C/min), and fast (F: 70°C/min). Abstract:Journal of Dental Research, Ahead of Print. The coloring process of monolithic dental zirconia caused considerable debate on the possible effects of different coloring methods. The main objective of this study was to investigate the influence of pigments in 3 multilayer 5-mol% yttria partially stabilized zirconia (5Y-PSZ) disks (Lava Esthetic A2 [Zr-AGG_A2] and Bleach [Zr-AGG_BL], both 3M Oral Care, and Katana STML A2 [Zr-NoAGG], Kuraray Noritake). The influence of pigment addition on the translucency parameter (TP00), fracture toughness, Vickers hardness, biaxial strength, and hydrothermal stability was assessed and correlated with the microstructure and phase composition. The pigment composition and distribution were evaluated by light and fluorescence microscopy, electron probe microanalysis, and nano–scanning electron microscopy. The chemical and phase composition and aging behavior were assessed using X-ray fluorescence and X-ray diffraction, respectively, while the aging sensitivity of the pigments was evaluated using micro-Raman spectroscopy. In contrast to Zr-NoAGG, possessing a typical 5Y-PSZ microstructure, the pigment additions in both Zr-AGG_A2/BL zirconia resulted in large yellow and blue fluorescent Er-, Hf-, and Al-containing agglomerates composed of small grains (0.57 μm and 0.38 μm, respectively, vs. 0.92 μm for the surrounding grains) with lower Y2O3 content. Zr-AGG_A2 had the lowest aging resistance, with transformation degradation occurring exclusively within the pigment agglomerates. All zirconia grades had a high Y2O3 content (4.2%–5.7 mol%) tetragonal ZrO2 phase and a high (42%–55 wt%) cubic ZrO2 phase content. Although no statistical differences were measured for hardness and toughness, Zr-NoAGG had a significantly higher TP00, higher flexural strength, and lower mechanical reliability compared to both Zr-AGG_A2/BL zirconia. The rare-earth oxide-containing zirconia agglomerates that were added as pigments to the multilayered monolithic Zr-AGG_A2/BL zirconia are the cause for their lower optical and mechanical properties and reduced aging resistance.

Effect of coloring and sintering on the translucency and biaxial strength of monolithic zirconia

Abstract:STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: The influences of coloring and sintering procedures on the optical and mechanical properties of monolithic zirconia have not been thoroughly investigated.PURPOSE: The purpose of this in vitro study was to investigate the effects of the coloring procedure and of varying final sintering temperatures on the translucency parameter (TP) and biaxial flexural strength (BFS) of monolithic zirconia.MATERIAL AND METHODS: Disk-shaped specimens (N=210) of 2 different monolithic zirconia brands (Vita YZ HTWhite [VYZa]; Vita YZ HTColor A2 [VYZb]; Prettau Zirkonzahn [PZ]; Prettau Anterior Zirkonzahn [PZA]) with a diameter of 15 mm and a thickness of 1.0 ±0.05 mm were prepared. Half of the specimens prepared from noncolored blocks (VYZa, PZ, and PZA) received coloring liquid application. Then, the specimens were divided into 3 subgroups (n=10) according to the final sintering temperatures (1350°C, 1450°C, and 1600°C). The TP was determined by using a reflection spectrophotometer, and the BFS was tested with the piston-on-3-ball method in a universal testing machine. Data were statistically analyzed by multivariate multiple regression and Bonferroni tests (α=.05).RESULTS: Significant differences were obtained among the groups based on the results of the TP and BFS (P<.05). The TP was affected by the changes in final sintering temperature. The varying final sintering temperatures demonstrated no significant effect on the BFS, except in group PZ (noncolored) that produced lower BFS when sintered at 1350°C than the subgroups sintered at 1450°C and 1600°C (P<.05). Coloring liquid application significantly decreased the TP of VYZa (sintered at 1350°C) but produced no significant effect on the groups PZ and PZA. Additionally, the coloring procedure had no significant effect on the BFS of tested materials (VYZa, PZ, and PZA) (P>.05).CONCLUSIONS: Increased sintering temperature leads to increased translucency with minimal impact on the BFS. The coloring procedure should be considered at the time of material selection to avoid possible reduction in translucency.

Abstract:A BSTRACT Background: Monolithic zirconia restorations can be produced from self-colored or uncolored blocks. The coloring procedure of uncolored blocks and surface treatments may affect the appearance of the restoration. Aim: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of liquid coloring and surface treatments on optical properties of translucent monolithic zirconia. Methods: All specimens were cut from zirconia blocks with a thickness of 1 mm. Specimens were dipped in the coloring liquids for 3 min, 5 min, and 7 min and then divided into groups of 10 specimens for surface treatments. Glaze and mechanical polishing were applied, and the color of the specimens was measured under the D65 lighting condition with a spectrophotometer device. Color values obtained from the CIE Lab formula and the translucency parameter (TP), opalescence parameter (OP), and contrast ratio (CR) were calculated. The normality of the data was confirmed with the Shapiro-Wilk test. A three-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to assess the effect of dipping time, liquid shade, and surface treatments. Results: The effect of liquid shade and dipping time on the TP, OP, and CR parameters were statistically significant, and the TP values were reduced with the application of coloring liquid. Mechanical polishing groups had higher OP values and lower TP values than glazed groups. Conclusion: In cases where high translucency is required, it may be advisable to use self-colored blocks and apply glaze as a surface treatment to achieve the desired optical properties.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To compare color parameters and transmittance of Y2O3 stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystals (Y-TZP) all-ceramic restorations using different veneering technologies. METHODS:Fifteen disc specimens with 10 mm in diameter and (0.50 +/- 0.01) mm in thickness were fabricated of IPS e. max ZirCAD core material, and ZL1 IPS e. max ZirLiner was layered in 0.10 mm thickness. The specimens were divided into three groups randomly (n=5 per group). Group ZP was veneered 0.60 mm by heat-pressing; group ZC was veneered 0.60 mm by layering; group ZPC was veneered 0.30 mm by heat-pressing and then 0.30 mm by layering. Color parameters L*, a*, b* and transmittance of zirconia specimens were measured before and after veneering with ShadeEye NCC dental chromameter and spectrophotometer. Color saturation C* ab and color difference deltaE were calculated in the following formulae: C* ab = [(a*)2 + (b*)2](1/2), deltaE = [(deltaL*)2 + (deltaa*)2 + (deltab*)2](1/2) One-way analysis of variance and Turkey's multiple comparison test were used to analyze data (alpha = 0.05) by SPSS 10.0 statistic software. Color parameters of A2 shade tabs were measured, and color differences between each group and tab were calculated. RESULTS:As to ZP,ZPC,ZC groups, the value of a* increased (-1.35 +/- 0.07, -0.64 +/- 0.06, -0.36 +/- 0.05) (P < 0.05), the value of b* decreased (27.01 +/- 0.07, 25.48 +/- 0.11, 23.28 +/- 0.25) (P < 0.05), and the value of C* ab decreased (27.04 +/- 0.08, 25.49 +/- 0.11, 23.28 +/- 0.25) (P < 0.05). L* and transmittance were maximum in ZP group (87.53 +/- 0.48, 1.64 +/- 0.03) and minimum in ZPC group (82.14 +/- 0.18, 1.47 +/- 0.01) (P < 0.05). Compared with standard A2 shade tab, the color difference of ZC group was minimum (delta = 1.04), and the color difference of ZP group was maximum (deltaE = 4.86). CONCLUSIONS:Y-TZP all-ceramic restoration veneered by heat-pressing was the most transparent and lightest; while veneered by both heat-pressing and layering, the restoration was worst in translucency and the least light. The color of zirconia all-ceramic restoration veneered by layering was the most similar to standard shade tab, and the color difference was minimum.

Abstract:Aim: The purpose of the present study was to examine the optical properties, chemical composition, and grain size (GS) of monolithic zirconia (MZ) ceramic at different thicknesses sintered using different procedures after hydrothermal aging. Settings and Design: An in vitro study. Materials and Methods: Forty MZ discs (0.5-mm thickness [Group-0.5] and 1-mm thickness [Group-1]; 12 mm diameter) were milled and divided according to standard (Group-ST) and speed (Group-SP) sintering procedures. All specimens were hydrothermally aged at 134°C after sintering. Translucency (TP), opalescence (OP), and fluorescence (ΔE ab* -FL) parameters were calculated using the color coordinates (L*, a*, b*, respectively) of the discs. The chemical composition and the GS of the specimens were characterized using X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy and a scanning electron microscopy, respectively. Statistical Analysis Used: TPs and ΔE ab* -FLs were analyzed using independent samples t -tests and Mann–Whitney U-tests while a two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used for OPs. Results: Group-1 showed significantly lower TP than Group-0.5 ( P < 0.001) but a significantly higher OP ( P = 0.014). Group-SP showed significantly higher OP ( P = 0.00003) and ΔE ab* -FL ( P = 0.0026) values than Group-ST without considering the thickness. Group-SP (0.29 ± 0.119 μm) had a smaller GS than Group-ST (0.306 ± 0.142 μm). Compared to Group-ST, Group-SP had a lower percentage of Y 2 O 3 and a higher percentage of Al 2 O 3 . Conclusion: The effect of the sintering procedure on TP and OP of MZ was not perceived by the naked eye. The speed sintering procedure may increase Δ E *ab -FL of MZ to higher values than natural teeth when compared with standard sintering. The speed sintering may cause minor changes in GS and the chemical composition of MZ.
Color stability of precolored and extrinsically colored monolithic multilayered polychromatic zirconia: Effects of surface finishing and aging

Abstract:Purpose To explore the impact of zirconia types, coloring methods, and surface finishing on the color stability of monolithic multilayered polychromatic zirconia after artificial aging, including thermocycling and simulated toothbrushing. Materials and Methods Eighty square‐shaped zirconia samples were divided into 2 types (M3Y‐TZP and M6Y‐PSZ), further categorized based on coloring methods (precolored and extrinsically colored) and surface finishing techniques (mechanical polishing or glazing). The color stability was assessed using the CIEDE2000 formula. Artificial aging was simulated via thermocycling and toothbrushing. All samples were analyzed with a spectrophotometer to determine the post‐aging color changes (ΔE00). The ΔE00 were interpreted and classified using the 50:50% perceptibility threshold (PT) and the 50:50% acceptability threshold (AT). Comparisons between groups for ΔE00 differences were performed using three‐way ANOVA, with pairwise comparisons facilitated by Fisher's protected least significant difference test, α = 0.05. Results The study results indicated significant impacts of zirconia type, coloring method, and surface finishing on color stability. The M6Y groups experienced significantly greater color changes (6.61 ± 1.63) compared to the M3Y groups (3.40 ± 2.24), p < 0.0001. For both types of zirconia, extrinsically colored samples exhibited significantly higher ΔE00 when mechanically polished (p = 0.004). However, surface finishing had no significant effect on ΔE00 in precolored samples of either zirconia material (p = 1.000). The evaluation and categorization of ΔE00 variations indicated that nearly all color changes in the M6Y groups, regardless of being precolored, extrinsically colored, polished, or glazed, were deemed extremely unacceptable (Grade 1). In contrast, the M3Y groups showed more acceptable results, with the majority of color changes classified as moderately unacceptable (Grade 3). Conclusions The color stability of multilayered polychromatic zirconia is influenced by the type of material, extrinsic coloring, and the chosen surface treatment post‐artificial aging. The translucent 6Y‐PSZ exhibited lower color stability, especially with only mechanical polishing. For the fabrication of M3Y‐TZP and 6Y‐PSZ monolithic multilayered polychromatic zirconia restorations, extrinsic coloring should be paired with glazing to maintain color stability. Conversely, in the absence of extrinsic coloring, both glazing and mechanical polishing are effective in preserving color stability.

Abstract:Aim:The presentin vitrostudy evaluated the Color and Translucency of Colored and Pre-colored MonolithicZirconia ceramics. Materials and methods:Twenty disks of Monolithic Zirconia with a diameter of 10 mm and a thickness of1.5 mm were milled from White and Pre-colored Blanks. The disks milled from the White blanks were subjectedto immersion in Coloring liquid. The disks were divided into Group I Colored Zirconia and Group II Pre-coloredZirconia. Twenty Co-Cr disks of diameter of 10◦mm and thickness of 2.5◦mm with a superficial hollow spacer of8◦mm diameter and 0.1◦mm thickness were used in this study to serve as metallic substrates for the Zirconiadisks. Using a Color Spectrophotometer, Color coordinates were observed. Color difference (AE) was measuredover a white backdrop, metal substrate before, and metal substrate after cementation. The Translucency Parameter(TP) was measured over a white and black backdrop. Independent ‘t-test and Mann WhitneyUtest were used toanalyze the Color difference and Translucency Parameter data, respectively. Results:The Mean Color difference between Colored Zirconia and Pre-colored Zirconia against a white backdropand metal substrate before cementation was 12.32 and 10.37, respectively. The Mean Color difference betweenColored Zirconia and Pre-colored Zirconia against a white- backdrop and metal substrate after cementation was2.48 and 3.41, respectively. The mean color difference between Colored and Pre-colored Zirconia against metalsubstrate before and after cementation was 8.37 and 9.13, respectively. Pre-colored Zirconia showed a statisticallysignificantly higher color difference than Colored Zirconia (P◦<◦0.05). The mean Translucency parameter forColored Zirconia and Pre-colored Zirconia was 7.73 and 8.83, respectively. The mean Translucency parameterfor Colored Zirconia and Pre-colored Zirconia over metal substrate was 0.52 and 0.57, respectively. Conclusion:On comparison of Colored and Pre-colored Zirconia from a white background to the metal substratebefore and after cementation, the Colored Zirconia showed lower color difference than the Pre-colored Zirconia,which suggests that Colored Zirconia has better masking ability than Pre-colored Zirconia. However, comparingthese two materials for Translucency, the Pre-colored Zirconia material demonstrated higher translucency than theColored Zirconia material before and after cementation over the metal substrate.

Abstract:Purpose: This study compared the color parameters and total luminous transmittance of disc specimens by different veneering techniques in order to examine the effect of veneering technique on esthetics of yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystalline (Y-TZP) all-ceramic restorations.Materials and Methods: Thirty disc specimens (10-mm diameter, 0.50 +/- 0.01 mm thick) were fabricated of IPS e.max ZirCAD core material, and ZL1 IPS e. max ZirLiner (0.10-mm thick) was layered. The specimens were randomly divided into three groups (n = 10/group). Group ZP (fully anatomical technique) was veneered 0.60 mm by heat-pressing IPS e. max ZirPress fluorapatite glass-ceramic ingots; Group ZC (traditional layering technique) was veneered 0.60 mm by condensing and sintering IPS e. max Ceram low-fusing nano-fluorapatite veneering porcelain; Group ZPC (cutback technique) was veneered by partially pressed ingots and subsequently layered 0.30 mm with veneering porcelain. Color parameters (L*, a*, b*) and total luminous transmittance (tau) of zirconia core discs and core and veneer specimens were measured with ShadeEye NCC dental colorimeter and spectrophotometer, respectively. Effect of Coffee Thermocycling on Color Stability and Translucency of CAD-CAM Polychromatic High Translucent Zirconia Compared With Lithium Disilicate Glass Ceramic

Abstract:Aims and objectives: To evaluate the effect of coffee thermocycling on color stability and translucency of CAD-CAM polychromatic high translucent zirconia compared with lithium disilicate glass ceramic. Methods: Sixteen rectangular plates (14 × 16 × 1.0 mm) of two ceramic materials (IPS E.max CAD (IEC), IPS E.max ZirCAD Prime [IZP]) were prepared. Each specimen was measured for color coordinates using a spectrophotometer following 30,000 cycles of coffee thermocycling. CIELAB formula was used to determine color and translucency differences (ΔE and ΔTP). The means of ΔE and ΔTP were compared using independent samples t-test and were evaluated using their respective 50%:50% perceptibility and acceptability thresholds (PT and AT). One-way analysis of variance was performed to evaluate the translucency parameter (TP) and surface roughness (Ra) of each material. Results: Mean ΔE values of IEC (4.69) and IZP (4.64) were higher than the AT (ΔE ≤ 2.7) with no significant difference found between the two groups (p = 0.202). Considering the TP, only IEC showed a statistically significant increase in TP value (p < 0.001). However, the mean ΔTP of IEC (3.25) remained within the range of acceptability (1.3 < ΔTP ≤ 4.4). Conclusions: Within the limitations of this current study, the color stability of all materials was clinically affected by coffee thermocycling. In terms of translucency, only lithium disilicate glass ceramic was influenced by coffee thermocycling. High translucent zirconia had superior translucency stability compared to lithium disilicate glass ceramic.
Research of Optical Properties and Biocompatibility in Different Zones of Multilayered Translucent Zirconia on Hydrothermal Aging

Abstract:Objective: We assessed the changes in optical properties and biocompatibility of transition zones in multilayered translucent monolithic zirconia exposed to prolonged hydrothermal aging and compared the results to those with different yttrium oxide contents. Materials and Methods: Four types of zirconia blocks from IPS e.max ZirCAD were used: 3Y-TZP e.max ZirCAD LT (ZL), 4Y-TZP e.max ZirCAD MT (ZM), 5Y-TZP e.max ZirCAD MT Multi (ZT), and 3Y/5Y-TZP e.max ZirCAD Prime (ZP). A total of 120 specimens (15.0 mm diameter and 1.5 mm height) were fabricated and divided into three groups (n = 10). The aging process for the specimens was conducted in an autoclave set to 134 °C and 0.2 MPa, with durations of 0 h (control), 5 h (first aged), and 10 h (second aged). The optical properties and biocompatibility were analyzed, followed by a statistical analysis of the data (α = 0.05). Results: Before and after aging, ZL and ZP exhibited the lowest color changes. ZT exhibited the highest average transmittance and translucency parameter values, while ZL had the lowest. The water contact angle test showed the highest value in ZM and lowest in ZL across all the aging stages. ZL, ZM, and ZP showed a considerable decrease in the water contact angle; however, ZT did not. A cell counting kit-8 assay showed ZL had the highest value, while ZM had the lowest. A filamentous actin test exhibited the highest value in ZL and lowest in ZM. In the vinculin analysis, ZL and ZT exhibited the lowest values, whereas ZM and ZP had the highest. Conclusion: 3Y/5Y-TZP exhibited a balanced performance across critical parameters, such as color stability, translucency, and biocompatibility, aligning with 3Y-TZP. While 5Y-TZP demonstrated superior translucency, it confirmed the lowest color stability, whereas 3Y-TZP achieved the highest biocompatibility. These properties provide clinicians with a reliable material option that ensures superior esthetic outcomes and long-term prognosis, ultimately contributing to improved patient satisfaction and clinical longevity.

Abstract:STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: The color of monolithic zirconia restorations is obtained by presintering or postsintering coloring techniques. However, studies on the differences in surface characteristics and their influence on color stability are lacking.PURPOSE: The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the influence of shading and staining techniques for a zirconia ceramic on the surface characteristics and colorimetric parameters (color difference, translucency, and whiteness index) after exposure to coffee or red wine and then polishing.MATERIAL AND METHODS: Ceramic disks (N=30; Ø10×1 mm) were allocated into 3 groups: preshaded-shaded by the manufacturer (IPS e.max ZirCAD MT, shade A2); manually shaded-unshaded zirconia (IPS e.max ZirCAD MT, bleaching shade-BL) colored by the brushing technique, before sintering; stained-unshaded zirconia (IPS e.max ZirCAD MT BL) colored by the staining technique, after sintering. Spectrophotometric color assessments ensured the same initial perceived color (Vita Classical A2) for specimens included in the study (∆E00<1.77 acceptability threshold). Surface characteristics were assessed by scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy. The specimens were immersed in coffee (n=5) or red wine (n=5) for 12 and 24 days and subsequently polished. The data were statistically and descriptively analyzed for color differences (∆E00), translucency parameters (TP00), and whiteness indexes for dentistry (WID), considering acceptability and perceptibility thresholds.RESULTS: The shaded groups found an irregular ceramic surface with uniformly sized zirconia crystals. The stained group found a glass-covered smoother surface. Significant alterations in color parameters (∆E00, TP00, WID) were observed with immersion in pigmenting beverages (P<.001) both after 12 days, and after 24 days. The shaded specimens had greater color alterations after immersion but benefited from the polishing procedure, which reduced color differences below an acceptable threshold in comparison with the baseline. Stained specimens had lower color alterations after immersion, but the polishing protocol was detrimental as it whitened the ceramic by subsurface exposure.CONCLUSIONS: The coloring technique influences the surface characteristics of zirconia ceramic and also the color parameters after exposure to colored beverages and polishing.

Abstract:PURPOSE: Translucency of all-ceramic restorations is an important factor which affects the final appearance and esthetic outcome of the restoration. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of the shade of coloring liquid on the translucency of zirconia framework.MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty zirconium oxide core plate (15 × 12 × 0.5 mm) were divided into 6 groups of 5 plates each. Each group was classified according to the shade of coloring liquid based on Vita Classic Scale (A2, A3, B1, C2, and D2), and each sample was immersed in coloring liquid for 3 seconds as recommended by the manufacturer, except for the control group. Contrast ratio, as a translucency parameter, was calculated using a spectrophotometer and the data were analyzed with oneway analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey's honestly significant differences (HSD) tests (α=.05).RESULTS: Significant differences in translucency among the control and test groups, and the B1 shaded group and other shades was observed. There were no significant differences among A2, A3, C2, and D2 shaded groups.CONCLUSION: The translucency of the zirconium oxide cores was affected by the coloring procedure and significant differences in the translucency measurements were identified between specific shades.

Abstract:Partially stabilized zirconia (5Y-PSZ) has been widely used to manufacture indirect monolithic restorations, and the effect of finishing procedures on the optical and mechanical properties of these materials are still unclear. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of staining, polishing and glazing on surface roughness, crystalline phase content, microhardness, fracture toughness, dynamic elastic modulus, three-point flexural strength, strain distribution, color (∆E00/∆L/∆a/∆b), and translucency before and after artificial accelerated aging (water spray and ultraviolet) of 5Y-PSZ. Bar-shaped and rectangle-shaped specimens of the 5Y-PSZ were prepared and divided into six groups, according to finishing procedure: GC (control), GS (staining), GG (glazing), GSG (staining and glazing), GP (polishing), GSP (staining and polishing). There was a significant difference between groups for surface roughness (p < 0.05), dynamic elastic modulus (p = 0.007), microhardness (p = < 0.05), ∆E00 (p = 0.010), and ∆a (p = 0.008). GC presented higher cubic phase content, and the stained groups (GS, GSG and GSP) presented higher monoclinic content. The different finishing procedures affected roughness, dynamic elastic modulus, microhardness, and color of 5Y-PSZ; polishing being the finish that provides minors changes to the 5Y- PSZ. Accelerated artificial aging caused color change, regardless of finishing procedure used.
Effects of Surface Treatment and Shade on the Color, Translucency, and Surface Roughness of High-Translucency Self-Glazed Zirconia Materials

Abstract:Statement of problem. The impact of different surface treatments and shades on the color, translucency, and surface roughness of high-translucency self-glazed zirconia materials is unclear. Purpose. The purpose of this in vitro study was to investigate the effects of different external surface treatments (self-glazed, milled, polished, and glazed), intaglio surface treatments (milled and airborne-particle abraded), and shades (A1 and A3 shades) on the color, translucency, and surface roughness of high-translucency self-glazed zirconia materials, as well as the correlations among optical parameters, translucency, and surface roughness. Material and methods. Eighty shade A1 and 80 shade A3 disks were fabricated with a thickness of 0.80 +/- 0.02 mm and divided into 16 groups (n=10). Different external and intaglio surface treatments were applied to the specimens. CIELab values were measured with a spectrophotometer, and color differences (Delta E-00) and relative translucency parameter (RTP) were calculated. Total transmittance (Tt%) and reflectance (R%) were tested with a spectrophotometer equipped with an integrating sphere. Surface roughness (Ra and Rz) (mu m) was measured with a noncontact 3-dimensional laser scanning microscope. One specimen from each group was subjected to scanning electron microscope (SEM) examination. Data were analyzed with ANOVA and the Tukey post hoc test. The correlation among optical parameters, translucency, and surface roughness was investigated by using Pearson correlation analysis (alpha=.05). Results. The effects of external surface treatments, intaglio airborne-particle abrasion, and shades on Delta E-00, RTP, and Ra values of the disks were significantly different (P<.001). The smoothest external polishing surface had the greatest RTP and color difference (P<.001). Shade A3 disks had lower RTP and Tt% values than shade A1 disks (P<.001). Delta E-00 had a highly positive relationship with the RTP (A1: r=0.884, P<.001; A3: r=0.859, P<.001). SEM images demonstrated that surface treatments affected the surface texture of monolithic zirconia ceramics. Conclusions. Different surface treatments affected the surface roughness, translucency, and final color of zirconia materials. The smoothest external polishing surface had the greatest RTP and color difference. Different shades influenced the translucency, as the darker the disk shade, the lower the translucency. The RTP was appropriate as an auxiliary indicator for evaluating the color of a dental ceramic.

Abstract:The aim of this work is to study the physical, chemical, and mechanical properties of 3 mol% Yttria-stabilized Tetragonal Zirconia Polycrystalline (3Y-TZP) materials doped with varying amounts of iron oxide (0, 400, 800, and 1000 ppm). We carried out full dense consolidation using two different sintering methods: fast-microwave technology at 1200°C and 1300°C, and conventional furnace at 1400°C. It was observed an improvement in density and hardness values, as well as great fracture toughness, and more intense color was achieved resulting in more natural color, similar to that of human teeth, using the microwave technique at 1300°C compared to the conventional method. However, the microwave-sintered specimens exhibited an increase in zirconia grains size and high color intensity along with iron oxide content when compared to conventional process, where the grain size does not vary with the coloring agent content. The results obtained in this work suggest that microwave technology can produce an increase in sintering activity due to the different dielectric properties of 3Y-TZP materials doped with Fe2O3. Another interesting confirmed result is that the addition of Fe2O3 presents a high resistance to low temperature hydrothermal degradation producing a delay in the aging process.
