Abstract:Biochar produced from wood residues may provide a new method and material for managing the environment, particularly in terms of carbon sequestration and contaminant remediation. Additionally, biochar produced from wood residues is free of chemical fertilizers, likewise in rice straw, wheat straw, corn straw, etc. This study investigated the removal of iron from aqueous solutions by a novel low-cost and eco-friendly biochar made from hardwood trees and modified by adding MgCl 2 for effective phosphate removal. Optimal adsorption conditions were determined through studies of adsorption time, pH, and adsorbent dosage. Batch equilibrium isotherm and kinetic experiments and pre/post-adsorption characterizations using FESEM–EDS, XRD, and FTIR suggested that the presence of carboxyl group elements and colloidal and nano-sized MgO (periclase) particles on the biochar surface were the main adsorption sites for aqueous iron and phosphate respectively. In this study, the HW and MgO-HW biochar showed excellent Dubinin-Radushkevich isotherm (D-R) maximum adsorption capacities of 289.45 and 828.82 mg/g for iron and phosphate. The kinetic study for iron and phosphate adsorption was described well by pseudo second-order model and pseudo second-order model respectively. The HW biochar and the prepared MgO-HW biochar exhibited commendable iron adsorption (98.25%) performance at 10 pH units and phosphate (96.22%) at pH 6 respectively. Thus, this research reveals a waste-to-wealth strategy by converting hardwood waste into mineral-biomass biochar with excellent Fe and P adsorption capabilities and environmental adaptability.

Abstract:Removal of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) from water through the use of various sorbents is often considered an economically viable way for supplementing conventional methods. Biochar has been widely studied for its potential adsorption capabilities for soluble N and P, but the performance of different types of biochars can vary widely. In this review, we summarized the adsorption capacities of biochars in removing N (NH4-N and NO3-N) and P (PO4-P) based on the reported data, and discussed the possible mechanisms and influencing factors. In general, the NH4-N adsorption capacity of unmodified biochars is relatively low, at levels of less than 20 mg/g. This adsorption is mainly via ion exchange and/or interactions with oxygen-containing functional groups on biochar surfaces. The affinity is even lower for NO3-N, because of electrostatic repulsion by negatively charged biochar surfaces. Precipitation of PO4-P by metals/metal oxides in biochar is the primary mechanism for PO4-P removal. Biochars modified by metals have a significantly higher capacity to remove NH4-N, NO3-N, and PO4-P than unmodified biochar, due to the change in surface charge and the increase in metal oxides on the biochar surface. Ambient conditions in the aqueous phase, including temperature, pH, and co-existing ions, can significantly alter the adsorption of N and P by biochars, indicating the importance of optimal processing parameters for N and P removal. However, the release of endogenous N and P from biochar to water can impede its performance, and the presence of competing ions in water poses practical challenges for the use of biochar for nutrient removal. This review demonstrates that progress is needed to improve the performance of biochars and overcome challenges before the widespread field application of biochar for N and P removal is realized.
Zirconium-modified biochar as the efficient adsorbent for low-concentration phosphate: performance and mechanism

Abstract:Achieving advanced treatment of phosphorus (P) to prevent water eutrophication and meet increasingly stringent wastewater discharge standard is an important goal of water management. In this study, a low-cost, high-efficiency phosphate adsorbent zirconium-modified biochar (ZrBC) was successfully synthesized through co-precipitation method, in which the biochar was prepared from the pyrolysis of peanut shell powder. ZrBC exhibited strong adsorption ability to low-concentration phosphate (< 1 mg·L −1 ) in water, and the phosphate removal reached 100% at the investigated dosage range (0.1–1.0 mg·L −1 ). The adsorption process could be described well by pseudo-second-order model and Langmuir isotherm model, indicating that the phosphate adsorption by ZrBC was mainly a chemical adsorption and single-layer adsorption process. The calculated static maximum phosphate adsorption capacity was 58.93 mg·g −1 at 25 °C. The ligand exchange between surface hydroxyl groups and phosphate was the main mechanism for the phosphate adsorption on ZrBC. The presence of coexisting anions except for SO 4 2− had little effect on the phosphate removal. At the column experiment, ZrBC showed superior treatment capacities for simulated secondary effluents and the breakthrough time for 0.5 mg·L −1 effluent phosphate concentration reached 190 h. ZrBC highlights the potential as an effective and environment-friendly adsorbent for the removal of low-concentration phosphate from secondary effluents of municipal wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs).
Enhanced As (V) Removal from Aqueous Solution by Biochar Prepared from Iron-Impregnated Corn Straw

Abstract:Fe-loaded adsorbents have received increasing attention for the removal of arsenic in contaminated water or soil. In this study, Fe-loaded biochar was prepared from iron-impregnated corn straw under a pyrolysis temperature of 600°C. The ratio of crystalline Fe oxides including magnetite and natrojarosite to amorphous iron oxyhydroxide in the composite was approximately 2 : 3. Consisting of 24.17% Fe and 27.76% O, the composite exhibited a high adsorption capacity of 14.77 mg g−1 despite low surface areas (4.81 m2 g−1). The pH range of 2.0–8.0 was optimal for arsenate removal and the adsorption process followed the Langmuir isotherms closely. In addition, pseudo-second-order kinetics best fit the As removal data. Fe oxide constituted a major As-adsorbing sink. Based on the X-ray diffraction spectra, saturation indices, and selective chemical extraction, the data suggested three main mechanisms for arsenate removal: sorption of arsenate, strong inner-sphere surface complexes with amorphous iron oxyhydroxide, and partial occlusion of arsenate into the crystalline Fe oxides or carbonized phase. The results indicated that the application of biochar prepared from iron-impregnated corn straw can be an efficient method for the remediation of arsenic contaminated water or soil.
Phosphate Removal Mechanisms in Aqueous Solutions by Three Different Fe-Modified Biochars

Abstract:Iron-modified biochar can be used as an environmentally friendly adsorbent to remove the phosphate in wastewater because of its low cost. In this study, Fe-containing materials, such as zero-valent iron (ZVI), goethite, and magnetite, were successfully loaded on biochar. The phosphate adsorption mechanisms of the three Fe-modified biochars were studied and compared. Different characterization methods, including scanning electron microscopy/energy-dispersive spectrometry (SEM-EDS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), were used to study the physicochemical properties of the biochars. The dosage, adsorption time, pH, ionic strength, solution concentration of phosphate, and regeneration evaluations were carried out. Among the three Fe-modified biochars, biochar modified by goethite (GBC) is more suitable for phosphate removal in acidic conditions, especially when the pH = 2, while biochar modified by ZVI (ZBC) exhibits the fastest adsorption rate. The maximum phosphate adsorption capacities, calculated by the Langmuir–Freundlich isothermal model, are 19.66 mg g−1, 12.33 mg g−1, and 2.88 mg g−1 for ZBC, GBC, and CSBC (biochar modified by magnetite), respectively. However, ZBC has a poor capacity for reuse. The dominant mechanism for ZBC is surface precipitation, while for GBC and CSBC, the major mechanisms are ligand exchange and electrostatic attraction. The results of our study can enhance the understanding of phosphate removal mechanisms by Fe-modified biochar and can contribute to the application of Fe-modified biochar for phosphate removal in water.

Abstract:Phosphate removal from water through green, highly efficient technologies has received much attention. Biochar is an effective adsorbent for phosphate removal. However, adsorption capacity of phosphate on pristine rice straw-based biochar was not optimistic due to low anion exchange capacity. In this study, Fe-modified, Mg-modified and MgFe-modified rice straw-based biochar (Fe-BC, Mg-BC and MgFe-BC) were prepared by combining metal impregnation and biological template methods to improve the adsorption capacity of phosphate. The surface characteristics of biochar and the adsorption behavior of phosphate on biochar were investigated. The modified biochar had the specific surface area of 17.910–39.336 m 2 /g, and their surfaces were rich in a large number of functional groups and metal oxides. Phosphate release was observed on pristine rice straw-based biochar without metal impregnation. The maximum adsorption capacities of phosphate on MgFe-BC, Mg-BC and Fe-BC at 298 K were 6.93, 5.75 and 0.23 mg/g, respectively. Adsorption was a spontaneous endothermic process, while chemical adsorption dominated and electrostatic attraction and pores filling existed simultaneously. Based on the site energy distribution theory study, the standard deviation of MgFe-BC decreased from 6.96 to 4.64 kJ/mol with temperature increasing, which proved that the higher the temperature would cause the lower heterogeneity. Moreover, the effects of pH, humic acid, co-existing ions and ionic strength on phosphate adsorption of MgFe-BC were also discussed. MgFe-BC with fine pores and efficient adsorption sites is an ideal adsorbent for phosphate removal from water.

Abstract:Biochar finds extensive use in adsorbing phosphorus (P) from wastewater abundant in P content. Most biochars carry negative surface charges, causing electrostatic repulsion towards anions. However, as P commonly exists as anions in water, the P adsorption capacity of biochar remains limited. Moreover, conventional biochar used for P adsorption presents challenges in recycling due to its small particle size. This study presented a novel approach wherein metal-modified large-size (1–2 mm) walnut shell biochars were created using Fe, Mg, and Ca additives at varying ratios. This innovation aims to enhance P adsorption capacity and recyclability. Experimental findings revealed that unmodified biochar (BC) exhibited minimal P adsorption capacity (0.34 mg/g), while all metal-modified biochars (MBCs) demonstrated elevated P adsorption capabilities (1.06–25.60 mg/g). Among the distinct MBCs, Ca-MBCs displayed the highest P adsorption capacity (25.60 mg/g), trailed by Mg-MBCs (23.58 mg/g) and Fe-MBCs (5.99 mg/g). Furthermore, both isotherm and kinetic adsorption analyses suggested that the P adsorption mechanism for MBCs predominantly involves chemical adsorption. However, desorption studies post-adsorption indicated suboptimal desorption efficiencies for P (19.16–26.07%) in MBCs, posing challenges for their application as fertilizers. Therefore, it is essential to enhance simultaneous P adsorption and desorption capabilities of biochar.

[Adsorption of Low-Concentration Phosphorus from Water by Composite Metal Modified Biochar]

Abstract:In this study, we synthesized composite metal modified biochar using fruit shell biochar impregnated with ferric chloride and potassium permanganate. We investigated its potential to adsorb phosphorus at low concentrations. Results show that the adsorption of low-concentration phosphorus by Fe and Mn modified biochar was significantly better than by non-modified biochar. SEM and FT-IR spectra indicate that iron and manganese oxides or iron hydroxides might be present on the surface of Fe and Mn modified biochar. When the phosphorus concentration is 0.5 mg·L-1 at a temperature is 298 K and solid-to-liquid ratio (mg:L) of 500, the adsorption capacity of modified biochar is 0.96 mg·g-1. When the pH of the solution is 4 to 10, a higher removal rate and adsorption capacity are realized. The biochar equilibrium data were fitted to the Freundlich equation, which indicated that the adsorption was a multimolecular layer adsorption. Adsorption thermodynamics studies showed that ΔGθ < 0, ΔHθ > 0, and ΔSθ > 0, indicating that the adsorption was a spontaneous, with positive entropy, and an endothermic process. The adsorption reached equilibrium after 60 min, and the adsorption kinetics followed a pseudo-second-order model. This research provides basic data for the removal of low-concentration phosphorus from a water body and sewage treatment plant.

Abstract:Iron (Fe)/iron oxide-modified biochar has practicable adsorption capability for phosphorus (P), but it is expensive. In this study, we synthesized novel low-cost and eco-friendly adsorbents co-pyrolyzed biochars using Fe-rich red mud (RM) and peanut shell (PS) wastes via a one-step pyrolysis process for removing P from pickling wastewater. The preparation conditions (heating rate, pyrolysis temperature, and feedstock ratio) and P adsorption behaviors were systematically investigated. In addition, a series of characterization and approximate site energy distribution (ASED) analyses were conducted to understand the P adsorption mechanisms. The magnetic biochar (BR7P3) with m (RM):m (PS) of 7:3 prepared at 900°C and 10 °C/min had a high surface area (164.43 m 2 /g) and different abundant ions (including Fe 3+ , and Al 3+ ). In addition, BR7P3 exhibited the best P removal capability (142.6 mg/g). The Fe 2 O 3 from RM was successfully reduced to Fe 0 , which was easily oxidized as Fe 3+ to precipitate with H 2 PO 4 − . The electrostatic effect, Fe–O–P bonding, and surface precipitation were the main mechanisms of P removal. ASED analyses revealed that high distribution frequency and solution temperature led to a high P adsorption rate of the adsorbent. Therefore, this study provides new insight into the waste-to-wealth strategy by transforming PS and RM into mineral-biomass biochar with excellent P adsorption capability and environmental adaptability.

Abstract:Excessive discharge of phosphorus (P) to aquatic ecosystems can lead to unpleasant eutrophication phenomenon. Removal and recovery of P is challenging due to low C/N ratios in wastewater, hence the development of efficient removal and recovery of P strategies is essential. In this study, zirconium–iron (Zr–FeBC) and iron modified (Fe–BC) biosolid biochars were examined to investigate their capacity for the removal of P by batch experiments. The influence of solution pH, biochar dose, initial P concentration, ionic strength, interfering ions and temperature were also studied to evaluate the P adsorption performance of biochars. The P experimental data were best described with pseudo-second order kinetics and the Freundlich isotherm model. The maximum P adsorption capacities were reached to 33.33 and 25.71 mg g−1 for 24 h by Zr–FeBC and Fe-BC at pH 5 and 4, respectively. Desorption studies were performed to investigate the reusability, cost-effectiveness and stability of the adsorbents Zr–FeBC and Fe-BC. The adsorption–desorption study suggests that both examined biochars have considerable potentiality as adsorbent candidates in removing as well as recovery of P from wastewaters. Results also reveal that the regenerated Zr–FeBC and Fe–BC could be utilized repetitively in seven adsorption–desorption cycles using NaOH as a desorbing agent, which greatly reduces the P-removal cost from wastewaters. Thus, P enriched biochar could potentially be used as fertilizer in the agriculture sector.

Abstract:A high level of organic and inorganic phosphorus exists in discharged circulating cooling water (DCCW), therefore, the efficient removal of phosphorus from DCCW is necessary. Herein, the adsorption performance and mechanism of hydroxyethylidene diphosphonic acid (HEDP) and phosphate from DCCW on pyrolysis biochar derived from agricultural waste (wheat and corn straw wastes, and peanut shell powder) were systematically investigated. Among them, biochar prepared from wheat straw and modified with MgCl 2 and CeCl 3 (molar ratio 3:1), i.e., WS-3Mg/Ce, showed optimal phosphorus removal from DCCW. The pseudo-second-order and Freundlich model well described the adsorption of HEDP, PO 4 3− , and total phosphorus (TP) on WS-3Mg/Ce. Further, negative Gibbs free energy (Δ G ) indicated that WS-3Mg/Ce adsorbed HEDP and phosphate through physical adsorption and chemical reactions, with the chemical reaction being dominant. Scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction results revealed that CePO 4 and Mg 3 (PO 4 ) 2 appeared on WS-3Mg/Ce after adsorption, and the diffraction bands of metal oxides or hydroxides decreased. Fourier transform infrared and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy results showed that O–H, M-O, M-O-P, and O–P on the surface of WS-3Mg/Ce participate in the reaction. This suggests that the adsorption of HEDP and phosphate on WS-3Mg/Ce mainly involves metal binding via Ce and Mg, and chemical complex via OH − . This study provides a promising approach for removing different forms of phosphorus simultaneously from DCCW via biochar and contributes to the resource recovery of agricultural and forestry waste. Future work is needed for the optimization of the biochar to promote the adsorption capacity and renewability in treating real DCCW.

Abstract:Iron-modified corn straw biochar was used as an adsorbent to remove phosphorus from agricultural runoff. When agricultural runoffs with a total phosphorus (TP) concentration of 1.86 mg·L−1 to 2.47 mg·L−1 were filtered at a hydraulic retention time of 2 h through a filtration column packed with the modified biochar, a TP removal efficiency of over 99% and an effluent TP concentration of less than 0.02 mg·L−1 were achieved. The isotherms of the phosphorus adsorption by the modified biochar fitted the Freundlich equation better than the Langmuir equation. The mechanism of the phosphorus adsorbed by the modified biochar was analyzed by using various technologies, i.e. scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The results indicated that the surface of the modified biochar was covered by small iron granules, which were identified as Fe3O4. The results also showed that new iron oxides were formed on the surface of the modified biochar after the adsorption of phosphorus. Moreover, new bonds of Fe-O-P and P-C were found, which suggested that the new iron oxides tend to be Fe5(PO4)4(OH)3. Aside from removing phosphorus, adding the modified biochar into soil also improved soil productivity. When the modified biochar-to-soil rate was 5%, the stem, root, and bean of broad bean plants demonstrated increased growth rates of 91%, 64%, and 165%, respectively.
Reactivity of Fe-amended biochar for phosphorus removal and recycling from wastewater

Abstract:Using biochar to remove phosphorus (P) from wastewater has the potential to improve surface water quality and recycle recovered P as a fertilizer. In this research, effects of iron modification on P sorption behavior and molecular characterization on two different biochars and an activated carbon were studied. A biochar produced from cow manure anaerobic digest fibers (AD) pyrolyzed under NH 3 gas had the greatest phosphate sorption capacity (2300 mg/kg), followed by the activated carbon (AC) (1500 mg/kg), and then the biochar produced from coniferous forest biomass (BN) (300 mg/kg). Modifying the biochars and AC with 2% iron by mass increased sorption capacities of the BN biochar to 2000 mg/kg and the AC to 2300 mg/kg, but decreased sorption capacity of the AD biochar to 1700 mg/kg. Molecular analysis of the biochars using P K-edge X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy indicated that calcium phosphate minerals were the predominant species in the unmodified biochar. However, in the Fe-modified biochars, XANES data suggest that P was sorbed as P-Fe-biochar ternary complexes. Phosphorus sorbed on unmodified BN biochar was more available for release (greater than 35% of total P released) than the AD biochar (less than 1%). Iron modification of the BN biochar decreased P release to 3% of its total P content, but in the AD biochar, P release increased from 1% of total P in the unmodified biochar to 3% after Fe modification. Results provide fundamental information needed to advance the use of biochar in wastewater treatment processes and recover it for recycling as a slow-release soil fertilizer.

Synergistic role of inherent calcium and iron minerals in paper mill sludge biochar for phosphate adsorption

Abstract:Phosphate adsorption using metal-based biochar has awakened much attention and triggered extensive research. In this study, novel Ca/Fe-rich biochars were prepared via a one-step process of pyrolyzing paper mill sludge (PMS) at various temperatures (300, 500, 700, and 800 °C) under a CO2 atmosphere for phosphate removal. Batch adsorption experiments showed that the biochar obtained at 800 °C (PB-800), which could be easily separated magnetically, exhibited the best phosphate adsorption capacity in a wide range of solution pH (5–11). Based on the Langmuir model, the maximum phosphate adsorption capacity for PB-800 was 17.33 mg/g. Besides, the effects of ambient temperature as well as coexisting ions on phosphate removal were also investigated. Kinetic and thermodynamic analysis revealed that chemisorption dominated the adsorption process. The calcium carbonate and ferric salts in the sludge were converted into CaO and Fe3O4 through pyrolysis at 800 °C. The CaO inherent in PB-800 was proved to serve as active sites for the chemical precipitation, showing its synergistic effect with iron oxide compounds (i.e., Fe3O4, α-Fe2O3) on phosphate removal through chemical precipitation, ligand exchange, and complexation. This study not only provides a feasible waste-to-wealth strategy for converting PMS into a Ca/Fe-rich magnetic biochar that can be used as an effective phosphate adsorbent, but also offers new insights into the synergistic effect of calcium and iron species for the adsorption of phosphate using biochar.

Abstract:The salmon gonadotropin II gene regulates ovulation and spawning. Analysis of the 5' flanking sequence of the hormone-specific beta-subunit of salmon gonadotropin II (sGTHII beta) gene reveals the presence of several presumptive estrogen-responsive elements (ERE). The participation of ERE in the control of sGTHII beta gene transcription was examined by the transient expression of sGTHII beta gene promoter-chloramphenicol acetyltransferase chimeric DNA constructs in HeLa cells, with the cotransfection of a rainbow trout estrogen receptor expression vector. Three ERE have been identified: the proximal ERE [pERE, at -267 base pair (bp) from the transcription start site], the distal ERE (dERE, at -2698 bp, three GGTCA motifs each separated by exactly 31 bp), and the half-ERE (1/2ERE, at -157 bp as a GGTCA motif), respectively. The pERE (TGTCAATCTGACC) represents a novel but less effective variation of the consensus ERE (cERE). The dERE is a unique estrogen-induced enhancer. It requires the participation of the pERE to be functional and the enhancer activity of pERE and dERE is promoter specific. The contribution of 1/2ERE is minor and is not cell-type specific. The activation of the ERE in the sGTHII beta gene and the synergistic cooperation between the dERE and pERE by estradiol-17 beta is dose dependent. DNA sequences in the vicinity of the ERE decreases their hormone responsiveness and the synergism between dERE and pERE. These negative regions may contribute to the quiescent endocrine state of the sGTHII beta gene during the regressive phase of the reproductive cycle in teleost.

Abstract:Phosphorus (P) and Ammonium Nitrogen (N) are essential nutrients for plants and environmental stability. However, their excess in water causes eutrophication, damaging aquatic ecosystems. While adsorption is a promising solution, finding affordable and efficient adsorbents remains a challenge. In this study, magnesium (Mg), iron (Fe), and Mg/Fe doped biochars (BC) adsorbents were synthesized, and evaluated for adsorption of individual P and N and a P + N mixture from a solution and wastewater from a wastewater treatment plant. Compared to other adsorbents, Mg/BC showed excellent performance in adsorbing phosphorus (P) and ammonium nitrogen (N) from aqueous solutions. It demonstrated a large adsorption capacity of 64.65 mg/g and 62.50 mg/g from individual P and N solutions, and 30.3 mg/g and 27.67 mg/g from the P and N mixture solution, respectively. In addition, Mg/BC efficiently removed P and N from real-life wastewater. In the real wastewater, P and N removal efficiencies reached 88.30% and 59.36%, respectively. Kinetics analysis revealed that the pseudo-second-order model accurately described the adsorption of phosphorus (P) and ammonium nitrogen (N) in all solutions. The adsorbent followed the monolayer-Langmuir isotherm for N ions and the multilayer-Freundlich isotherm for P, indicating efficient adsorption processes. Thermodynamic experiments indicated that the adsorption of P and N was not only feasible but also occurred spontaneously in a natural manner. This study revealed that the strategic modification of biochar plays a crucial role in advancing effective wastewater treatment technologies designed for nutrient removal.

Abstract:A new synthesis was developed to prepare engineered biochar derived from phosphorous-rich water hyacinth. The statistical analysis indicated a significant correlation between P content and the removal rates of Pb (II), Cu (II), and Ag (I), revealing the pivotal role of enrich P in the biochar for heavy metals (HM) removal. SEM-EDX, XRD and FTIR analyses validated the presence of P functional groups on the surface of P-biochar. Batch experiments showed that the strong acidic initial solution negatively affected the adsorption of HM ions, and a similar negative impact was observed during Cu (II) adsorption under the high ionic strength conditions. Competitive adsorption experiment confirmed P-biochar’s resilience against competing metal ions during the adsorption of HM ions. Pb (II) and Ag (I) adsorption were primarily governed by precipitation/reduction, along with complexation reactions involving P functional groups. Cu (II) adsorption was dominated by complexation between Cu (II) and P functional groups.

Abstract:Biochar (BC) has emerged as a potential solution to phosphate removal from wastewater primarily resulting from global overuse of fertilizers. Further modification by embedment of iron (Fe)-manganese (Mn) oxides on BC can enhance phosphate removal; however, the modification method serves as a vital factor underlying distinctive removal performances and mechanisms, which have yet been systematically examined. Herein, two Fe-Mn modified BC, Fe/MnBC (comprised of Fe3O4 and MnO2) and Fe-MnBC (comprised of MnFe2O4), were comprehensively investigated for gaining insights into the unsolved perspectives. The results indicated that Fe-MnBC exhibited a markedly greater maximum phosphate adsorption capacity of 135.88 mg g-1 than that of Fe/MnBC with 17.93 mg g-1. The comparative results based on microstructure and spectroscopic analyses suggested that different Fe and Mn oxides were successfully loaded, which played a distinctive role in phosphate removal. Further characterizations unveiled that the key mechanisms for phosphate removal by Fe/MnBC are inner-sphere complexation and precipitation, while electrostatic interaction and outer-sphere complexation are the dominant mechanisms underlying the notable performance of Fe-MnBC. The delicately designed Fe-MnBC with special structure and property also enabled a superior regeneration capacity, which presented a promisingly high phosphate removal efficacy of over 81.34% after five cycles. These results enhance comprehension regarding the impact of biochar modification techniques on phosphate removal, offering positive indications for the remediation of excessive phosphate and other pollutant-containing water through feasible design and green chemicals.
