Abstract:Achieving advanced treatment of phosphorus (P) to prevent water eutrophication and meet increasingly stringent wastewater discharge standard is an important goal of water management. In this study, a low-cost, high-efficiency phosphate adsorbent zirconium-modified biochar (ZrBC) was successfully synthesized through co-precipitation method, in which the biochar was prepared from the pyrolysis of peanut shell powder. ZrBC exhibited strong adsorption ability to low-concentration phosphate (< 1 mg·L −1 ) in water, and the phosphate removal reached 100% at the investigated dosage range (0.1–1.0 mg·L −1 ). The adsorption process could be described well by pseudo-second-order model and Langmuir isotherm model, indicating that the phosphate adsorption by ZrBC was mainly a chemical adsorption and single-layer adsorption process. The calculated static maximum phosphate adsorption capacity was 58.93 mg·g −1 at 25 °C. The ligand exchange between surface hydroxyl groups and phosphate was the main mechanism for the phosphate adsorption on ZrBC. The presence of coexisting anions except for SO 4 2− had little effect on the phosphate removal. At the column experiment, ZrBC showed superior treatment capacities for simulated secondary effluents and the breakthrough time for 0.5 mg·L −1 effluent phosphate concentration reached 190 h. ZrBC highlights the potential as an effective and environment-friendly adsorbent for the removal of low-concentration phosphate from secondary effluents of municipal wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs).
Phosphate Removal Mechanisms in Aqueous Solutions by Three Different Fe-Modified Biochars

Abstract:Iron-modified biochar can be used as an environmentally friendly adsorbent to remove the phosphate in wastewater because of its low cost. In this study, Fe-containing materials, such as zero-valent iron (ZVI), goethite, and magnetite, were successfully loaded on biochar. The phosphate adsorption mechanisms of the three Fe-modified biochars were studied and compared. Different characterization methods, including scanning electron microscopy/energy-dispersive spectrometry (SEM-EDS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), were used to study the physicochemical properties of the biochars. The dosage, adsorption time, pH, ionic strength, solution concentration of phosphate, and regeneration evaluations were carried out. Among the three Fe-modified biochars, biochar modified by goethite (GBC) is more suitable for phosphate removal in acidic conditions, especially when the pH = 2, while biochar modified by ZVI (ZBC) exhibits the fastest adsorption rate. The maximum phosphate adsorption capacities, calculated by the Langmuir–Freundlich isothermal model, are 19.66 mg g−1, 12.33 mg g−1, and 2.88 mg g−1 for ZBC, GBC, and CSBC (biochar modified by magnetite), respectively. However, ZBC has a poor capacity for reuse. The dominant mechanism for ZBC is surface precipitation, while for GBC and CSBC, the major mechanisms are ligand exchange and electrostatic attraction. The results of our study can enhance the understanding of phosphate removal mechanisms by Fe-modified biochar and can contribute to the application of Fe-modified biochar for phosphate removal in water.

Abstract:Excessive release of phosphate has gained prominence as a pivotal contributor to water contamination. Biochar, known for its abundant surface acreage and unparalleled adsorptive prowess, has been widely employed in aqueous remediation. Within the scope of this investigation, unprocessed biochar was derived from Chaetomorpha valida via pyrolysis methodologies involving temperatures ranging from 320 °C, 460 °C, 620 °C, and 860 °C, respectively. Mg-BC 620 , Al-BC 620 , and Mg–Al-BC 620 were prepared using the co-precipitation method at the optimal temperature to maximize the resource utilization of Chaetomorpha valida . The physicochemical attributes of altered biochars were evaluated employing X-ray diffractometry and other analytical techniques. The influence of different factors on phosphate’s adsorptive aptitude of altered biochar was investigated, and the adsorptive behavior and mechanism of biochar were studied using diverse kinetics of adsorption and assortment of isotherm models. The outcomes revealed that the optimal pyrolysis temperature was 620 °C, and the altered biochar displayed a strikingly elevated affinity for phosphate sorption, outperforming the unaltered biochar. Among the modified biochars, Mg–Al-BC 620 outperformed the rest, boasting an astonishing eradication rate of 94.92% when dosed at 8 g/L, maintaining a pH equilibrium of 7 in the solution, while confronting an inceptive phosphate density of 150 mg/L. The utmost threshold of adsorption proficiency predicted by the Langmuir equation was 228.130 mg/g, which was 88.56 times that of BC 620 . This modified biochar exhibits a strong affinity for phosphate and excellent adsorption selectivity, providing a promising avenue for the resource utilization of Chaetomorpha valida and has broad application prospects for scavenging phosphate in aqueous mediums.

Abstract:Biochar (BC) has emerged as a potential solution to phosphate removal from wastewater primarily resulting from global overuse of fertilizers. Further modification by embedment of iron (Fe)-manganese (Mn) oxides on BC can enhance phosphate removal; however, the modification method serves as a vital factor underlying distinctive removal performances and mechanisms, which have yet been systematically examined. Herein, two Fe-Mn modified BC, Fe/MnBC (comprised of Fe3O4 and MnO2) and Fe-MnBC (comprised of MnFe2O4), were comprehensively investigated for gaining insights into the unsolved perspectives. The results indicated that Fe-MnBC exhibited a markedly greater maximum phosphate adsorption capacity of 135.88 mg g-1 than that of Fe/MnBC with 17.93 mg g-1. The comparative results based on microstructure and spectroscopic analyses suggested that different Fe and Mn oxides were successfully loaded, which played a distinctive role in phosphate removal. Further characterizations unveiled that the key mechanisms for phosphate removal by Fe/MnBC are inner-sphere complexation and precipitation, while electrostatic interaction and outer-sphere complexation are the dominant mechanisms underlying the notable performance of Fe-MnBC. The delicately designed Fe-MnBC with special structure and property also enabled a superior regeneration capacity, which presented a promisingly high phosphate removal efficacy of over 81.34% after five cycles. These results enhance comprehension regarding the impact of biochar modification techniques on phosphate removal, offering positive indications for the remediation of excessive phosphate and other pollutant-containing water through feasible design and green chemicals.

Abstract:Nitrates and phosphates, found in fertilizers, are the most common eutrophication-causing agents. Douglas fir biochar (BC), a syngas byproduct, was treated with different Al/Mg ratios of sulfate (5% w/w metal loading) followed by an NaOH treatment. The greatest phosphate uptake at 25 °C and pH 7 was attributed to the composite with a Mg/Al 2:1 ratio prepared at pH 13 (AMBC). Batch AMBC phosphate uptake was optimized for initial pH, equilibrium time, temperature, and initial phosphate concentration. Phosphate removal following pseudo-2nd-order kinetics and increases gradually before reaching a max at pH 11, with 95% phosphate uptake in 15 mins. The Sips isotherm model provided the best sorption data fit resulting in a 42.1 mg/g capacity at 25 °C and pH 11. Endothermic and spontaneous adsorption were determined using van 't Hoff's plots. BET, XRD, XPS, SEM, TEM, and EDS were used to characterize the biochar before and after phosphate sorption. Used AMBC has the potential to be exploited as a phosphate fertilizer as a key part of an environmentally friendly agricultural management plan.

Abstract:Phosphorous pollution is one of the main factors causing water eutrophication. For the treatment of wastewater, metal-modified biochar has emerged as a promising adsorbent with enhanced affinity for anions such as phosphate. Biochar modified with Fe or Ca are suitable for the treatment of low-concentration phosphorous wastewater (<100mg/L). However, the use of modified biochar to remove high concentrations of phosphate from industrial wastewater is challenging. In this study, biochar from poplar wood, wheat bran, bagasse, and bamboo were prepared and loaded with Fe and Ca, and its adsorption performance and degradation mechanism in the presence of high phosphate concentrations were investigated. The phosphate adsorption capacity of the Fe/Ca-modified biochar was 12–70 times higher than that before the modification. The best type of biochar for phosphate removal was iron/calcium oxide-modified bamboo biochar (ZFCO-BC) through batch experiments. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) analyses showed that ZFCO-BC reacted with wastewater to produce stable vivianite (Fe 3 (PO 4 ) 2 ·(H 2 O) 8 ), which did not cause secondary release. ZFCO-BC exhibited a synergistic effect on the removal of 21 metals, including Cr, Cu, Co, Cd, As, Pb, and Y, from complex polluted water. Meanwhile, after 48 h of reaction, the concentration of phosphate decreased from 1660 to 0.061 mg/L, and the final value in the wastewater was lower than the phosphate discharge index indicated by the GB T31962-2015 Sewage Discharge into Urban sewer Water Quality Standard. This study shows that a single remediation system based on ZFCO-BC can remove phosphate and multiple heavy metals from contaminated water, providing a cost-effective treatment solution for complex polluted water bodies, such as industrial wastewater and groundwater.

Abstract:Phosphate removal from water through green, highly efficient technologies has received much attention. Biochar is an effective adsorbent for phosphate removal. However, adsorption capacity of phosphate on pristine rice straw-based biochar was not optimistic due to low anion exchange capacity. In this study, Fe-modified, Mg-modified and MgFe-modified rice straw-based biochar (Fe-BC, Mg-BC and MgFe-BC) were prepared by combining metal impregnation and biological template methods to improve the adsorption capacity of phosphate. The surface characteristics of biochar and the adsorption behavior of phosphate on biochar were investigated. The modified biochar had the specific surface area of 17.910–39.336 m 2 /g, and their surfaces were rich in a large number of functional groups and metal oxides. Phosphate release was observed on pristine rice straw-based biochar without metal impregnation. The maximum adsorption capacities of phosphate on MgFe-BC, Mg-BC and Fe-BC at 298 K were 6.93, 5.75 and 0.23 mg/g, respectively. Adsorption was a spontaneous endothermic process, while chemical adsorption dominated and electrostatic attraction and pores filling existed simultaneously. Based on the site energy distribution theory study, the standard deviation of MgFe-BC decreased from 6.96 to 4.64 kJ/mol with temperature increasing, which proved that the higher the temperature would cause the lower heterogeneity. Moreover, the effects of pH, humic acid, co-existing ions and ionic strength on phosphate adsorption of MgFe-BC were also discussed. MgFe-BC with fine pores and efficient adsorption sites is an ideal adsorbent for phosphate removal from water.

Abstract:The objective of this study was to determine the feasibility of using magnesium-alginate/chitosan modified biochar microspheres to enhance removal of phosphate from aqueous solution. The introduction of MgCl2 substantially increased surface area of biochar (116.2m(2)g(-1)), and both granulation with alginate/chitosan and modification with magnesium improved phosphate sorption on the biochars. Phosphate sorption on the biochars could be well described by a simple Langmuir model, and the MgCl2-alginate modified biochar microspheres exhibited the highest phosphate sorption capacity (up to 46.56mgg(-1)). The pseudo second order kinetic model better fitted the kinetic data, and both the Yoon-Nelson and Thomas models were superior to other models in describing phosphate dynamic sorption. Precipitation with minerals and ligand exchange were the possible mechanisms of phosphate sorption on the modified biochars. These results imply that MgCl2-alginate modified biochar microspheres have potential as a green cost-effective sorbent for remediating P contaminated water environment.

Abstract:A novel MgO-modified magnetic biochar (MgO@MBC) was made by chemical co-precipitation of Mg2+/Fe3+ on anaerobic digestion residue (ADR) and subsequently pyrolyzing at different temperatures. MgO@MBC was used for phosphate recovery from aqueous solution. The physicochemical properties of MgO@MBC were comprehensively investigated using TEM-EDS, FT-IR, XRD, VSM, N2 adsorption-desorption and TGA. Results showed that MgO/γ-Fe2O3 nanoparticles were successfully deposited onto the surface of BC. The effects of reaction temperature, initial solution pH, MgO@MBC dosage, coexisting anions and phosphate concentration on the removal of phosphate by MgO@MBC were researched. Additionally, the adsorption process of phosphate onto MgO@MBC was well described by the pseudo second-order and pseudo first-order models, which indicated a chemisorption and physisorption process. Besides, the maximum adsorption capacity of MgO@MBC for phosphate by the Langmuir model were 149.25 mg/g at 25 °C. Moreover, the thermodynamic study suggested that the adsorption of phosphate onto MgO@MBC was a spontaneous and endothermic process. The adsorption mechanisms including physical absorption, surface electrostatic attraction, surface complexation and precipitation were revealed. It could be concluded that MgO@MBC exhibited high removal efficiency of phosphate and excellent magnetic property for the recovery. MgO@MBC could be utilized as a magnetically recoverable adsorbent to realize phosphate recovery and MgO@MBC after the adsorpion of phosphate could be applied in agricultural production as a fertilizer.

Abstract:The production of sludge-based biochar to recover phosphorus (P) from wastewater and reuse the recovered phosphorus as agricultural fertilizer is a preferred process. This article mainly studied the removal of phosphate (PO 4 -P) from aqueous solution by synthesizing sludge-based biochar (MgSBC-0.1) from anaerobic fermentation sludge treated with magnesium (Mg)-loading-modification, and compared it with unmodified sludge-based biochar (SBC). The physicochemical properties, adsorption efficiency, and adsorption mechanism of MgSBC-0.1 were studied. The results showed that the surface area of MgSBC-0.1 synthesized increased by 5.57 times. The material surface contained MgO, Mg(OH) 2 , and CaO nanoparticles. MgSBC-0.1 can effectively remove phosphate in the initial solution pH range of 3.00–7.00, with a fitted maximum phosphorus adsorption capacity of 379.52 mg·g -1 . The adsorption conforms to the pseudo second-order kinetics model and Langmuir isotherm adsorption curve. The characterization of the adsorbed composite material revealed the contribution of phosphorus crystal deposition and electrostatic attraction to phosphorus absorption.

Abstract:Biochar produced from wood residues may provide a new method and material for managing the environment, particularly in terms of carbon sequestration and contaminant remediation. Additionally, biochar produced from wood residues is free of chemical fertilizers, likewise in rice straw, wheat straw, corn straw, etc. This study investigated the removal of iron from aqueous solutions by a novel low-cost and eco-friendly biochar made from hardwood trees and modified by adding MgCl 2 for effective phosphate removal. Optimal adsorption conditions were determined through studies of adsorption time, pH, and adsorbent dosage. Batch equilibrium isotherm and kinetic experiments and pre/post-adsorption characterizations using FESEM–EDS, XRD, and FTIR suggested that the presence of carboxyl group elements and colloidal and nano-sized MgO (periclase) particles on the biochar surface were the main adsorption sites for aqueous iron and phosphate respectively. In this study, the HW and MgO-HW biochar showed excellent Dubinin-Radushkevich isotherm (D-R) maximum adsorption capacities of 289.45 and 828.82 mg/g for iron and phosphate. The kinetic study for iron and phosphate adsorption was described well by pseudo second-order model and pseudo second-order model respectively. The HW biochar and the prepared MgO-HW biochar exhibited commendable iron adsorption (98.25%) performance at 10 pH units and phosphate (96.22%) at pH 6 respectively. Thus, this research reveals a waste-to-wealth strategy by converting hardwood waste into mineral-biomass biochar with excellent Fe and P adsorption capabilities and environmental adaptability.

Abstract:Phosphorus (P) and Ammonium Nitrogen (N) are essential nutrients for plants and environmental stability. However, their excess in water causes eutrophication, damaging aquatic ecosystems. While adsorption is a promising solution, finding affordable and efficient adsorbents remains a challenge. In this study, magnesium (Mg), iron (Fe), and Mg/Fe doped biochars (BC) adsorbents were synthesized, and evaluated for adsorption of individual P and N and a P + N mixture from a solution and wastewater from a wastewater treatment plant. Compared to other adsorbents, Mg/BC showed excellent performance in adsorbing phosphorus (P) and ammonium nitrogen (N) from aqueous solutions. It demonstrated a large adsorption capacity of 64.65 mg/g and 62.50 mg/g from individual P and N solutions, and 30.3 mg/g and 27.67 mg/g from the P and N mixture solution, respectively. In addition, Mg/BC efficiently removed P and N from real-life wastewater. In the real wastewater, P and N removal efficiencies reached 88.30% and 59.36%, respectively. Kinetics analysis revealed that the pseudo-second-order model accurately described the adsorption of phosphorus (P) and ammonium nitrogen (N) in all solutions. The adsorbent followed the monolayer-Langmuir isotherm for N ions and the multilayer-Freundlich isotherm for P, indicating efficient adsorption processes. Thermodynamic experiments indicated that the adsorption of P and N was not only feasible but also occurred spontaneously in a natural manner. This study revealed that the strategic modification of biochar plays a crucial role in advancing effective wastewater treatment technologies designed for nutrient removal.

Abstract:Abstract The modification process of biochars enables different advantages including enhanced adsorption properties for different pollutants. Herein, porous magnetic biochars (PMB) were successfully produced from softwood biomass through a two-step pyrolysis process together with FeCl 3 modification. The effect of production temperature on adsorption was studied at 200 or 300 °C, followed by iron salt modification and subsequent pyrolysis at 600 or 800 °C. Biochars were characterized before and after phosphate adsorption via various characterization methods to acquire structural, elemental, and morphological properties of the adsorbent. The effects of phosphate concentration, contact time, and temperature on the adsorption process were examined in the batch mode. The characterization showed embedded iron oxide crystals of 23 nm within the biochar structure with a magnetic strength of 38.9 emu/g, which can assist the separation process of the powdered adsorbent from the aqueous medium. The surface area of the PMB was measured as 93 m 2 /g and 0.002 cm 3 /g pore volume. PMB showed complete removal (100%) of phosphate at the lower concentration (5 mg/l P). At higher concentration (25 mg/l P), the biochar prepared under 200/800 °C showed the highest removal (30%). The adsorption was enhanced with time (optimal 3 h) and temperature, which shows endothermic chemisorption following Langmuir isotherm and Pseudo-second order kinetic models. The desorption study suggested the slow release of phosphate from the spent adsorbent and potential reuse for soil enhancement. These results point towards the sustainable use of PMB as an effective and magnetically recyclable adsorbent for phosphate removal and reclaim.

Abstract:The discharge of phosphorus from rural wastewater causes eutrophication, so phosphorus removal is regarded as an important part of water treatment. In this study, corn biochar (BC) was prepared at pyrolysis temperature of 450 °C, and then Al-Fe dual-decorated biochar (AFBC) was obtained through a two-step modification method (AlCl 3 immersion before FeCl 3 immersion) on the base of BC. The characterization results showed that Fe and Al were decorated on corn biochar in the form of FeOOH, Fe 2 O 3 , and AlOOH. Compared with Al/Fe mono-decorated biochar (ABC/FBC), AFBC exhibited superior phosphate removal performance in a wide pH range (pH 4.0–11.0). The adsorption behavior of AFBC was a spontaneous exothermic process, and conformed to the Langmuir and pseudo-second-order kinetic models. The adsorption mechanism was dominated by the electrostatic attraction and coordination between metal (hydrogen) oxide on biochar surface and phosphate. In the dynamic adsorption-desorption experiment, AFBC could reduce total phosphorus (TP) from 5.54 mg/L to 0.5 mg/L within 40 BV of actual rural wastewater. In addition, using phosphate-loaded AFBC as a soil conditioner promoted the growth of ryegrass, and it also provided an effective method to achieve bio-waste resource utilization and phosphorus reuse. Abstract:A necessary step prior to starting any membrane protein computer simulation is the creation of a well-packed configuration of protein(s) and lipids. Here, we demonstrate a method, alchembed, that can simultaneously and rapidly embed multiple proteins into arrangements of lipids described using either atomistic or coarse-grained force fields. During a short simulation, the interactions between the protein(s) and lipids are gradually switched on using a soft-core van der Waals potential. We validate the method on a range of membrane proteins and determine the optimal soft-core parameters required to insert membrane proteins. Since all of the major biomolecular codes include soft-core van der Waals potentials, no additional code is required to apply this method. A tutorial is included in the Supporting Information.

Abstract:In this study, Mg-modified sludge biochar (MB) and Mg-Fe double oxides/sludge biochar composites (MFB) were synthesized for enhanced removal of phosphate from aqueous solution. The phosphate adsorption followed the Langmuir-Freundlich isotherm model, and the maximum capacity was 142.31 mg P/g and 35.41 mg P/g for MB and MFB, respectively. MB exhibited the higher adsorption capacity at pH 8–9 and performed well under the influences of coexisting anions and temperature (4–45 °C). Adsorption kinetics was well described by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model, indicating the chemical bonding between phosphate and adsorption sites. The adsorption capacity of phosphate decreased by < 15% after three successive recycles. Based on FTIR, XRD, and XPS analysis, the main mechanisms for phosphate removal by MB included electrostatic attraction, surface complexation, and precipitation. Hydroxides/oxides particles of Mg on the surface of MB with positive charge could adsorb HPO42− and PO43− to form surface complex and convert to MgHPO4 and Mg3(PO4)2. The released amounts of Fe, Cd, Cr, Pb, Cu, Zn, Sb, and As from MB and MFB were low and acceptable. However, the released amount of Mg was as high as 4.9 wt% for MB and 8.7 wt% for MFB at the pH corresponding maximum adsorption capacity, posing a risk of salt increase. The grass (Lolium perenne L.) germination and early growth with the addition of P-laden biochars as fertilizer are seriously inhibited due to the high alkalinity, particularly for MB. The environmental risk of P-laden biochars (with high alkalinity and salt content) as fertilizer should be emphasized in practical application.

Abstract:Metal oxide-loaded biochars are a promising material to remove phosphate from polluted water to ultra-low concentrations. To facilitate preparing the metal oxide-loaded biochar with the best phosphate adsorption performance, five biochars loaded with Al, Ca, Fe, La and Mg oxides, respectively (Al-BC, Ca-BC, Fe-BC, La-BC and Mg-BC) were produced using Phragmites australis pretreated with 0.1 mol AlCl 3 , CaCl 2 , FeCl 3 , LaCl 3 and MgCl 2 , respectively, characterized, and phosphate adsorption kinetics and isotherms of the biochars were determined. The maximum phosphate adsorption capacities ( Q m ) of the biochars ranked as Al-BC (219.87 mg g −1 ) > Mg-BC (112.45 mg g −1 ) > Ca-BC (81.46 mg g −1 ) > Fe-BC (46.61 mg g −1 ) > La-BC (38.93 mg g −1 ). The time to reach the adsorption equilibrium ranked as La-BC (1 h) < Ca-BC (12 h) < Mg-BC (24 h) = Fe-BC (24 h) <Al-BC (greater than 72 h). Q m of Ca-BC, Fe-BC, La-BC and Mg-BC depend on the molar content of metals in the biochars. The small phosphate adsorption rate of Al-BC is due to the slow intra-particle diffusion of phosphate attributed to the undeveloped porosity and dispersed distribution of AlOOH crystals on the Al-BC surface. Mg-BC is suggested for phosphate removal from water considering adsorption rate and capacity. Al-BC is applicable when a long contact time is allowed, e.g. as a capping material to immobilize phosphate in lake sediments.

Abstract:Phosphorus is an essential element of ecosystems, supporting the growth of plants and animals; however, its excessive presence in water can lead to eutrophication. In this study, the phosphate adsorbent SA2:8 Mg/Ca was prepared by loading calcium and magnesium onto sludge and almond shell. Various characterization methods were used to analyze biochar, and the phosphorus removal effect of SA2:8 Mg/Ca under different conditions was evaluated. The results showed that the phosphate removal rate of the adsorbent was more than 70% in the range of pH 4 ~ 12, and the adsorption performance was significantly affected by HCO 3 − and SO 4 2− , though the removal rate remained over 50%. The adsorption process conforms to the pseudo-second-order model, and the isothermal adsorption model aligns more closely with the Langmuir model. Increased temperature was favorable for phosphate adsorption. The theoretical maximum adsorption capacity of SA2:8 Mg/Ca was 78.27 mg/g. Thermodynamic analysis confirmed that the adsorption process was spontaneous. The main mechanisms of adsorption include electrostatic interaction, ion exchange, Lewis acid–base interaction, and chemical precipitation. Additionally, the P-laden biochar exhibited excellent potential for application: it can be used as a catalyst to improve the efficiency of persulfate catalytic degradation of ofloxacin. The removal rate of OFX in water by the SA2:8 Mg/Ca-PS system was 81.4%.

Abstract:The potential of almond kernel, physically activated by nitrogen/steam, or chemically activated by Mg 2+ or bentonite and then by nitrogen/steam, to adsorb phosphate from wastewaters was evaluated. The performance of biochar was studied as a function of initial phosphate concentration, adsorbent dose, contact time and solution pH. The mechanism of adsorption was investigated by carrying out structural, chemical and mineralogical analyses of the material before and after phosphate adsorption, as well as by applying two isotherm models, simulating the experimental data. The results showed that the specific surface area increased about 260 times after activation. Adsorption of phosphate was fast within 30 min, while reached equilibrium after 12 h. For Mg 2+ modified material a higher ionic strength facilitated the uptake of phosphate by the biochar up to 59%, in contrast to the bentonite modified material, where adsorption of phosphate was complete (100%) at an initial concentration of 50 mg/L, declining thereafter. Mg 2+ modified material was best fitted by the Freundlich model, while bentonite modified material was best fitted by the Langmuir model. For an adsorbent dose of 2 g/L maximum phosphate adsorption capacity after Mg 2+ or bentonite modification was 82 mg/g and 54 mg/g, respectively. In the case of Mg 2+ modification the potential mechanisms of adsorption were surface precipitation, electrostatic attraction, chemical complexation or electron coordination between the phosphate ion and the adsorbent. For bentonite modification, chemical complexation and π-π electron coordination were the potential adsorption mechanisms.
