Abstract:This paper proposes a novel technique of Raman-atomic force microscopy (AFM) combining micro region Raman spectroscopy and AFM imaging. An in-situ probe unit which can simultaneously realize the detection of Raman spectrum and the measurement of AFM image was designed, and a related Raman-AFM system was constructed. Using this system, some experiments were carried out to acquire micro region Raman spectra and AFM images of ZnO nano-particle and TiO2 film. The results show that the Raman spectra of both samples are in agreement with theoretical vaues, and the AFM images represent their micro/nano-structures quite well. These researches prove the feasibility of the Raman-AFM technique which has the potential of being widely applied in the fields of Raman spectroscopy and micro/nano-technology.

Abstract:Raman spectroscopy of crystalline/molecular systems is well backed with quantum chemical calculations and group theory, making it a unique characterization tool. For the "intermediate" case of nanoscale systems, however, the use of Raman spectroscopy is limited by the lack of such theoretical bases. Here, we suggest to couple a scaled quantum-mechanical (SQM) calculation with the phonon confinement model (PCM) to construct a universal and physically consistent basis for nanoscale Raman spectroscopy. Unlike the commonly used one-dimensional dispersion PCM, we take into account the confinement along all the three dimensions of the k-space. We apply it to diamond nanoparticles of sub-50nm size, a system with pronounced anisotropy of dispersion for which the use of three-dimensional dispersion is a requisite. The model excellently reproduces size-sensitive spectral features, including the peak position, bandwidth and asymmetry of the sp3 C-C Raman band. This fundamental approach can be easily generalized to other nanocrystalline solids to hopefully contribute the future development of quantitative nanoscale Raman spectroscopy.

Abstract:High P-T Raman measurements of solid and fluid hydrogen to above 1100 K at 70 GPa and to above 650 K in 150 GPa range, conditions previously inaccessible by static compression experiments, provide new insight into the behavior of the material under extreme conditions. The data give a direct measure of the melting curve that extends previous optical investigations by up to a factor of 4 in pressure. The magnitude of the vibron frequency temperature derivative (dnu/dT)(P) increases by a factor of approximately 30 over the measured pressure range, indicating an increase in intrinsic anharmonicity and weakening of the molecular bond.

Abstract:Vibrational and electronic properties and anharmonicity of sp-carbon atomic wires (i.e., polyynes) have been studied using resonance Raman spectroscopy, focusing on the confinement effects connected to their structure (length and termination). We exploited the fine tunability of the synchrotron radiation to resonantly excite short H-, CH3-, and CN-capped carbon atomic wires at their vibronic transitions in the deep UV. We report for the first time the resonance Raman spectra of size-selected CH3-capped polyynic wires (HCnCH3, n = 8–12) and CN-capped wires (HC6CN and HC12CN). We observed that the degree of π-electron conjugation increases with the wire length and is related to the specific termination. The analysis of multiple quanta Raman overtone bands shows that the anharmonic correction of the vibrational potential energy becomes increasingly relevant as the wire length increases. Finally, studying the vibronic lines of the UV absorption spectra allows the determination of an effective displacement parameter between the minima of the ground and the low-lying excited state, proving that the strong electron-phonon coupling of these systems is sensitive to chain length and termination.

Abstract:Disordered carbon often exhibit a complex Raman spectrum, with four to six components. Here, a large variety of disordered carbons, forming a collection of samples with a great variety of structures, are analysed using multi-wavelength Raman microscopy (325.0, 514.5, 785.0 nm). They allow us to extend Raman behaviour known for nano-crystalline graphite to amorphous carbons, (dependence with the excitation wavelength) and other known for amorphous carbons to nano-crystalline graphite, (differentiation of the smallest cluster size probed using different excitation wavelengths). Experimental spectra were compared to simulated spectra, built using known laws, to evidence a new source of broadening.

Abstract:Coherent Raman scattering spectroscopies have been established as a powerful tool for investigating molecular systems with high chemical specificity. The existing coherent Raman scattering techniques detect only Raman active modes, which are a part of the whole molecular vibrations. Here, we report the first observation of coherent anti-Stokes hyper-Raman scattering (CAHRS) spectroscopy, which allows measuring hyper-Raman active vibrations at high speed. The CAHRS process relies on a fifth-order nonlinear process that combines hyper-Raman scattering with coherent Raman scattering. Observed signals are proven to come from the CAHRS process through various experiments concerning the dependences of the signals on incident laser powers, time-delay, polarizations, and selection rules of molecular vibrations. Comparisons of CAHRS signals with spontaneous hyper-Raman signals from para-nitroaniline solutions and benzene liquid manifest much higher signal-to-noise ratios of CAHRS signals than spontaneous hyper-Raman signals. This study illustrates that CAHRS spectroscopy can offer new information on molecular vibrations unobtainable from the present coherent Raman techniques at a much higher speed than spontaneous hyper-Raman spectroscopy.

Abstract:Oxygen-tolerant [NiFe] hydrogenases are valuable blueprints for the activation and evolution of molecular hydrogen under application-relevant conditions. Vibrational spectroscopic techniques play a key role in the investigation of these metalloenzymes. For instance, resonance Raman spectroscopy has been introduced as a site-selective approach for probing metal-ligand coordinates of the [NiFe] active site and FeS clusters. Despite its success, this approach is still challenged by a limited number of detectable active-site states - due to missing resonance enhancement or intrinsic light sensitivity - and difficulties in their assignment. Utilizing two oxygen-tolerant [NiFe] hydrogenases as model systems, we illustrate how these challenges can be met by extending excitation and detection wavelength regimes in resonance Raman spectroscopic studies. Specifically, we observe that this technique does not only probe low-frequency metal-ligand vibrations but also high-frequency intra-ligand modes of the diatomic CO/CN- ligands at the active site of [NiFe] hydrogenases. These reporter vibrations are routinely probed by infrared absorption spectroscopy, so that direct comparison of spectra from both techniques allows an unambiguous assignment of states detected by resonance Raman spectroscopy. Moreover, we find that a previously undetected state featuring a bridging hydroxo ligand between Ni and Fe can be probed using higher excitation wavelengths, as photoconversion occurring at lower wavelengths is avoided. In summary, this study expands the applicability of resonance Raman spectroscopy to hydrogenases and other complex metalloenzymes by introducing new strategies for probing and assigning redox-structural states of the active site.

Abstract:A witch with a racemic pair of our nanohoops, TB[6]CPPs, chants words shown in the font of a magical world. This magic is that the chirality of Troger′s base forces paraphenylenes to become part of a circularly polarized luminescence chromophore. The spiral light bands coming out to the space indicate CPL and give the impression that our research contributes to the development of CPL chromophores, for example, of a 3D display in the near future.
