Abstract:An investigation of the energetics and dynamics properties of sodium adsorption on graphyne and graphdiyne has been carried out by first-principles calculations. Graphyne (GY) and graphdiyne (GDY) is the single atomic layer structure of carbon six-member rings connected by one and two acetylenic linkages, respectively. Our calculated results indicate that a novel atomic hollow structure of graphyne and graphdiyne made up of sp- and sp2-hybridized carbon atoms reinforces not only the Na storage capacity but also the Na diffusion. For GY and GDY, the maximum sodium storage concentration is NaC4 and NaC3, respectively, far exceeding the upper limit of Na insertion into graphite to form the stage-II compound NaC12 and being also superior to the case of Li inserting into graphite to form LiC6. By only overcoming a smaller energy barrier of about 0.4 eV, Na ions can easily achieve two-dimensional diffusion on GY and GDY plane. Excellent performances of the sodium storage capacity and sodium diffusion ability make graphyne and graphdiyne promising candidates for the anode material used in sodium-ion batteries.

Abstract:In order to develop candidate materials for more metal ion battery anodes, a three-dimensional (3D) porous structure 3D-PGY was designed based on graphyne, and a sandwich structure graphene/PGY/graphene (G/PGY/G) was constructed by adjusting the distance between two layers of graphene with 3D-PGY as the middle layer. Systematic calculations have shown that 3D-PGY is thermally and mechanically stable even at temperatures up to 1000 K. Li can migrate in multiple diffusion directions in two structures because of its smaller radius while Na and K ions can only migrate through the larger pores. The energy barriers of Li, Na and K ions in 3D-PGY are 0.18, 0.43 and 0.27 eV respectively. After forming the sandwich structure with graphene, the minimum energy barriers of Li, Na and K ions are decreased to 0.12, 0.37 and 0.24 eV, respectively. As the anode for Li, Na, and K ion batteries, the theoretical specific capacities of 3D-PGY are about 558 mA h g −1 , and the average open circuit voltages of 3D-PGY and G/PGY/G are about 0.48/0.52/0.29 and 1.08/1.04/1.39 V, respectively. Finally, using ab initio molecular dynamics simulations, the diffusion coefficients for 3D-PGY at different temperatures, as well as for G/PGY/G at 400 K were obtained. The Li, Na and K ions in both structures can diffuse rapidly and have good rate capabilities. These excellent performances show that the graphyne-based 3D porous structure and its sandwich-type graphene structure are very promising for the development of new battery materials.

Nitrogen Doped Γ-Graphyne: A Novel Anode for High-Capacity Rechargeable Alkali-Ion Batteries.

Abstract:High energy density is the major demand for next-generation rechargeable batteries, while the intrinsic low alkali metal adsorption of traditional carbon-based electrode remains the main challenge. Here, the mechanochemical route is proposed to prepare nitrogen doped γ-graphyne (NGY) and its high capacity is demonstrated in lithium (LIBs)/sodium (SIBs) ion batteries. The sample delivers large reversible Li (1037 mAh g-1 ) and Na (570.4 mAh g-1 ) storage capacities at 100 mA g-1 and presents excellent rate capabilities (526 mAh g-1 for LIBs and 180.2 mAh g-1 for SIBs) at 5 A g-1 . The superior Li/Na storage mechanisms of NGY are revealed by its 2D morphology evolution, quantitative kinetics, and theoretical calculations. The effects on the diffusion barriers (Eb ) and adsorption energies (Ead ) of Li/Na atoms in NGY are also studied and imine-N is demonstrated to be the ideal doping format to enhance the Li/Na storage performance. Besides, the Li/Na adsorption routes in NGY are optimized according to the experimental and the first-principles calculation results. This work provides a facile way to fabricate high capacity electrodes in LIBs/SIBs, which is also instructive for the design of other heteroatomic doped electrodes.
Utilizing the Full Capacity of Carbon Black As Anode for Na-ion Batteries Via Solvent Co-Intercalation

Abstract:Carbonaceous materials have long been considered promising anode materials for Na-ion batteries. However, the electrochemical performance of conventional carbon anodes is generally poor because the sodium ion storage solely relies on the disordered region of the carbon materials in a carbonate-based electrolyte. The solvent co-intercalation mechanism for Na ions has been recently reported in natural graphite anodes for Na-ion batteries with ether-based electrolytes, but their capacities are still unsatisfactory. We show here for the first time that by combining regular Na ion storage in the disordered carbon layer and solvent co-intercalation mechanism in the graphitized layer of a commercial N330 carbon black as an anode material for Na-ion batteries in ether-based electrolyte, the reversible capacity could be fully realized and doubled in magnitude. This unique sodium intercalation process resulted in a significantly improved electrochemical performance for the N330 electrode with an initial reversible capacity of 234 mAh·g –1 at 50 mA·g –1 and a superior rate capability of 105 mAh·g –1 at 3,200 mA·g –1 . When cycled at 3,200 mA·g –1 over 2,000 cycles, the electrode still exhibited a highly reversible capacity of 72 mAh·g –1 with a negligible capacity loss per cycle (0.0167%). Additionally, surface-sensitive C K-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy, with the assistance of electrochemical and physicochemical characterizations, helped in identifying the controlled formation and evolution of a thin and robust solid electrolyte interphase film. This film not only reduced the resistance for sodium ion diffusion, but also maintained the structural stability of the electrode for extended cycle reversibility. The superior electrochemical performance of N330 carbon black strongly demonstrated the potential of applying ether-based electrolytes for a wide range of carbon anodes apart from natural graphite.

Abstract:Graphyne, a single atomic layer structure of the carbon six-member rings connected by one acetilenic linkage, is a promising anode for the rechargeable batteries. In this paper, a first-principle study was carried out on graphyne as a new candidate for the anode material of magnesium-ion batteries, using density functional theory calculations. The main focus of this work is on the magnesium adsorption on graphyne surface. The structural properties such as adsorption height and energy, the most stable adsorption sites, the band structure, and density of state (DOS) of the pristine graphyne the diverse Mg-decorated graphyne structures, and energy barrier against Mg diffusion are also calculated. As a consequence of the band structure and DOS of graphyne structures, it is found that the pristine graphyne and the Mg-decorated graphyne structures show a semiconducting nature and metallic behavior, respectively. Moreover, the migration behavior of Mg on graphyne for the main diffusion paths is determined by Nudged Elastic Band (NEB) method.

Abstract:N-graphdiyne monolayers, a set of carbon-nitride nanosheets, have been synthesized recently through the polymerization of triazine- and pyrazine-based monomers. Since the two-dimensional nano-structures are mainly composed of light-weight nonmetallic elements including carbon and nitrogen, they might be able to provide high storage capacities for rechargeable cells. In this study, we used extensive first principle calculations such as electronic density of states, band structure, adsorption energy, open-circuit voltage, nudged-elastic band and charge analyses to investigate the application of the newly fabricated N-graphdiyne monolayers as the anode material for Li/Na/Mg ion batteries. Our calculations suggest that while Mg foreign atoms poorly interact with monolayers, Li and Na adatoms illustrate outstanding anodic characteristics for rechargeable storage cells. Electronic density of states calculations indicate that the insertion of Li/Na into the novel N-graphdiyne materials enhances the electrical conductivity of nanosheets. Adsorption energy and open-circuit voltage calculations predict that the nanosheets can provide a high storage capacity spectrum of 623-2180 mAh/g which is higher than that for most recently discovered 2D materials (e.g. phosphorene, borophane, and germanene involve Li binding capacities of 433, 504, and 369 mAh/g, respectively) and it is also significantly greater than the capacity of commercial anode materials (e.g. graphite contains a capacity of 372 mAh/g). This study provides valuable insights about the electronic characteristics of newly fabricated N-graphdiyne nanomaterials, rendering them as promising candidates to be used in the growing industry of rechargeable storage devices.
Mechanochemical Synthesis of γ-Graphyne with Enhanced Lithium Storage Performance

Abstract:γ-Graphyne is a new nanostructured carbon material with large theoretical Li+ storage due to its unique large conjugate rings, which makes it a potential anode for high-capacity lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). In this work, γ-graphyne-based high-capacity LIBs are demonstrated experimentally. γ-Graphyne is synthesized through mechanochemical and calcination processes by using CaC2 and C6 Br6 . Brunauer-Emmett-Teller, atomic force microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, solid-state 13 C NMR and Raman spectra are conducted to confirm its morphology and chemical structure. The sample presents 2D mesoporous structure and is exactly composed of sp and sp2 -hybridized carbon atoms as the γ-graphyne structure. The electrode shows high Li+ storage (1104.5 mAh g-1 at 100 mA g-1 ) and rate capability (435.1 mAh g-1 at 5 A g-1 ). The capacity retention can be up to 948.6 (200 mA g-1 for 350 cycles) and 730.4 mAh g-1 (1 A g-1 for 600 cycles), respectively. These excellent electrochemical performances are ascribed to the mesoporous architecture, large conjugate rings, enlarged interplanar distance, and high structural integrity for fast Li+ diffusion and improved cycling stability in γ-graphyne. This work provides an environmentally benign and cost-effective mechanochemical method to synthesize γ-graphyne and demonstrates its superior Li+ storage experimentally.
α-Graphyne with Ultra-low Diffusion Barriers as a Promising Sodium-ion Battery Anode and a Computational Scheme for Accurate Estimation of Theoretical Specific Capacity

Abstract:Sodium-ion batteries are considered as potential alternatives to conventional lithium-ion batteries. To realize their large-scale practical applications, it is essential to identify suitable anode candidates exhibiting promising electrochemical properties such as high specific capacity, low diffusion energy barrier, and excellent cyclic stability. In this work, using density functional theory (DFT) calculations and ab initio molecular dynamics simulations, we examine α−graphyne - a carbon-based 2D material - as a potential anode candidate. Our results show that AGY exhibits an ultra-low diffusion barrier of 0.09 eV along both the horizontal and vertical directions and a low average anodic voltage of 0.36 V. Our AIMD studies at 300K show excellent thermodynamical stability with the loading of four sodium atoms, resulting in a theoretical specific capacity (TSC) of 279 mAh/g. Doping studies show that varying the nature of acetylenic links of AGY with electron-rich (nitrogen) or electron-deficient (boron) elements, the adsorption strength and diffusion barriers for Na atoms on AGY can be tuned. Furthermore, treating AGY as a case study, we find that conventional DFT studies are expected to overestimate the TSC by a huge margin. Specific to AGY, this overestimation can be up to ∼300%. We identify that ignoring the probable formation of temperature-driven metal clusters is the main reason behind such overestimations. Furthermore, we develop a scheme to calculate TSC with higher accuracy. The scheme, which can be easily generalized to the universal class of electrodes, is evolved by concurrently employing AIMD simulations, DFT calculations and cluster analysis.

Efficient Electron Injection into Graphullerene Enables Reversible NaC2 Sodium Storage

Abstract:Sodium-ion batteries are emerging as promising alternatives to conventional lithium-based technology, offering solutions to challenges in large-scale grid storage. However, the capacity of conventional graphite-based anodes for storing Na-ions is inherently limited by suboptimal thermodynamic interactions and irreversible structural changes that occur in the anode during charge-discharge cycles. Herein, we present a computational design that explores the potential of graphullerene, a two-dimensional framework with interconnected fullerene moieties, for the reversible storage of Na-ions. A unique aspect of this design is the electron injection capacity into the graphullerene anode, reaching 15 electrons per fullerene moiety, which is the highest limit to date. This advancement enables large-scale Na-ion storage up to the stoichiometry of NaC2, exhibiting specific capacity of 551 mAhg-1 and averaged open circuit voltage of 0.18 V vs Na/Na+. In addition, the multilayered arrangement of stored Na-ions enhances the Na-ion diffusivity on the graphullerene surface, leading to rapid insertion and extraction kinetics. Thus, raising the electron injection limit offers a promising strategy to transform carbon-based anodes into suitable candidates for reversible Na-ion storage, without relying on artificial defect introduction or doping.
Impact of Surface Modification on the Lithium, Sodium, and Potassium Intercalation Efficiency and Capacity of Few-Layer Graphene Electrodes

Abstract:In a conventional lithium-ion battery (LIB), graphite forms the negative electrode or anode. Although Na is considered one of the most attractive alternatives to Li, achieving reversible Na intercalation within graphitic materials under ambient conditions remains a challenge. More efficient carbonaceous anode materials are desired for developing advanced LIBs and beyond Li-ion battery technologies. We hypothesized that two-dimensional materials with distinct surface electronic properties create conditions for ion insertion into few-layer graphene (FLG) anodes. This is because modification of the electrode/electrolyte interface potentially modifies the energetics and mechanisms of ion intercalation in the thin bulk of FLG. Through first-principles calculations; we show that the electronic, structural, and thermodynamic properties of FLG anodes can be fine-tuned by a covalent heteroatom substitution at the uppermost layer of the FLG electrode, or by interfacing FLG with a single-side fluorinated graphene or a Janus-type hydrofluorographene monolayer. When suitably interfaced with the 2D surface modifier, FLG exhibits favorable thermodynamics for the Li+, Na+, and K+ intercalation. Remarkably, the reversible binding of Na within carbon layers becomes thermodynamically allowed, and a large storage capacity can be achieved for the Na intercalated modified FLG anodes. The origin of charge-transfer promoted electronic tunability of modified FLGs is rationalized by various theoretical methods.

Abstract:In electrode preparation, graphene-based electrodes usually form a uniaxially oriented stacking structure, which limits the Na+ diffusion in graphene electrodes for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). In this work, a crumpled graphene (CG) anode with graded interlayer spacings was synthesized, and CG exhibits high-rate performance for SIBs. The CG has a folding microstructure like a paper clip that facilitates rapid adsorption/desorption of Na+ on its surface so that the diffusion kinetics of Na+ could be improved. The x-ray absorption fine structure and transmission electron microscope proved the mechanism of Na+ co-adsorption and explained the reason for its high-rate performance. When the three-dimensional CG is used as the anode of SIBs, it has a high-rate performance of 146 mAh g−1 with the current density increasing to 1 A g−1, and CG still maintained about 79 mAh g−1 after 1000 cycles at 0.5 A g−1 with good structural stability.

Abstract:The expanding energy storage market has created a surge of interest in the exploration of high energy density alternatives to Li-ion batteries, and Na metal batteries have received considerable attention due to their abundant reserves and low cost. Similar to Li metal anodes, the unstable plating/stripping behaviors of Na metal anodes upon cycling hinder their practical applications at room temperature. Herein, a superelastic graphene lattice (GL) with hierarchical structures was fabricated via a 3D printing technique on the basis of the direct inkjet writing strategy. This approach enables the precise tailoring of the multiscale graphene bulk structure, from nanometer GO building elements to macroscopic monoliths. Due to the pore structure design of the GL, the rim regions of the holes demonstrated a highly concentrated current density and could serve as preferred sites for Na deposition. This phenomenon was utilized to regulate the Na deposition; hence, a stable Na metal anode is produced. As a result, a high Coulombic efficiency of 99.84% was realized for a long lifetime of 500 cycles (similar to 1000 h) at a current density of 1 mA cm(-2). These results provide a novel insight into the rational design of graphene-based material structures at multiscale for high-performance Na metal anodes.
Graphenylene: A Promising Anode Material for Lithium-Ion Batteries with High Mobility and Storage

Abstract:It is known that low-dimensional carbon allotropes can be used as a new class of anode materials for lithium-ion batteries. However, the existing carbon allotropes cannot meet the increasing energy and power demand, and thus there is still a need for further development of new materials for lithium-ion batteries. In the present work, a new graphene allotrope, known as graphenylene, is found to be capable of storing lithium with greater density of energy. Ab initio density functional theory calculations indicate that the unique dodecagonal holes in graphenylene enable lithium ions to diffuse both on and through graphenylene layers with energy barriers no higher than 0.99 eV. Adsorption of a lithium atom on graphenylene is stronger than that on pristine graphene. The highest lithium storage capacities for monolayer and bilayer graphenylene compounds are Li3C6 and Li2.5C6, respectively, which correspond to specific capacities of 1116 and 930 mA h g(-1). Both specific and volumetric capacities of lithium-intercalated graphenylene compounds are significantly larger than those for graphene. The high lithium mobility and large lithium storage capacity demonstrate that graphenylene is a promising anode material for modern lithium-ion batteries.
Branched Diamine Electrolytes for Na + -Solvent Cointercalation into Graphite

Abstract:Recently, graphite has been recognized as a potential negative electrode for sodium (Na)-ion batteries via the use of a solvent cointercalation mechanism. However, nearly all works exploring this mechanism have focused on glymes, which are stable for reversible cointercalation. Herein, we demonstrate branched diamines, such as 1,3-diaminopentane, as alternative cointercalating solvents showing initial capacities up to 130 mAh/g for graphite in Na cells. X-ray diffraction indicated a reversible and smaller expansion of the lattice compared to glymes, which nearly doubles the volumetric capacity. In all, our work indicates some appealing characteristics when amine electrolytes are cointercalated into graphite.

Abstract:Developing high-performance anode materials is significantly important for further application of sodium ion batteries (SIBs). Constructing a rational hierarchical nanostructure of active materials with carbon materials can effectively improve the electrochemical performance. Here, thin films of carbon coated Sn/SnO2 nanoparticles are synthesized on multilayer graphene (MLG), which has flat surface and high electric conductivity. The synthesis includes the preparation of uniform thin films of amorphous SnO2 on MLG by a HCl controlled chemical bath deposition method, subsequent coating glucose and annealing at a high temperature. As anode of SIBs, the composite delivers specific discharge capacities of around 598.0 mAh/g at 100 mA g−1 and 244.2 mAh/g at 5 A/g, showing a high reversible capacity and superior rate performance. It also shows high cycling stability with capacity retention of 490 mAh/g at 100 mA g−1 after 100 cycles, and 355.64 mAh/g at 500 mA g−1 after 300 cycles.

Abstract:Sodium metal batteries are widely acknowledged as one of the most promising low-cost high-energy-density batteries, but limited by uncontrollable dendritic growth and short cyclability. Herein, two-dimensional (2D) mesoporous polydopamine-graphene (mPG) heterostructures with definable pore size and sheet thickness are demonstrated as multi-functional ion redistributors to realize ultrastable, dendrite-free Na metal anodes. Benefitting from abundant sodiophilic groups (-OH, C=O and -NH-), 2D nanoporous graphene, and ordered mesoporous ion channels in mPG, the Na metal anodes show high Coulombic efficiency of >99.5%, outstanding cyclability of ~2000 h, and unprecedented rate performance of 25 mA cm -2 with 25 mAh cm -2 , outperforming all the reported Na anodes stabilized by diversified strategies. What’s more, the mPG based Na/Na 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 full batteries deliver exceptionally enhanced cyclability (90% retention rate after 500 cycles) and rate capacity (75 mAh g -1 at 30 C), demonstrative of impressive potential of well-designed 2D mesoporous polymers for precisely regulating Na deposition.

Abstract:Although the room-temperature rechargeable sodium-ion battery has emerged as an attractive alternative energy storage solution for large-scale deployment, major challenges toward practical sodium-ion battery technology remain including identification and engineering of anode materials that are both technologically feasible and economical. Herein, an antimony-based anode is developed by incorporating antimony into graphitic carbon matrices using low-cost materials and scalable processes. The composite anode exhibits excellent overall performance in terms of packing density, fast charge/discharge capability and cyclability, which is enabled by the conductive and compact graphitic network. A full cell design featuring this composite anode with a hexacyanometallate cathode achieves superior power output and low polarization, which offers the potential for realizing a high-performance, cost-effective sodium-ion battery.

Abstract:Graphyne and its derivatives, with a unique sp-sp(2) hybridized structure and interesting electronic properties, are predicted to be attractive carbon materials for many practical applications. Here we report well-defined hydrogen substituted graphyne (HsGY) prepared using a facile bottom-up approach with a large area of up to 33 cm(2). Studied directly by HRTEM, selected area electron diffraction and corresponding simulation, the as-synthesized crystalline HsGY nanosheets showed AB stacking with a lattice fringe of 0.445 nm. The aromatic C-H bonds and the acetylene linkages of HsGY provide a large number of active sites for ion binding; the high specific surface area, wide interlayer spacing, hierarchical porous structure, excellent electronic conductivity and low carrier barrier of HsGY also guarantee excellent intercalation and diffusion of sodium ions, making HsGY a promising anode for rechargeable batteries. Theoretical calculations demonstrate that the porous HsGY can provide numerous storage sites and deliver a theoretical capacity larger than 1207 mA h g(-1). The prepared HsGY electrodes delivered a high reversible capacity of 600 mA h g(-1) at a current density of 100 mA g(-1); even at a high current density of 5000 mA g(-1), the as-prepared HsGY electrodes can deliver a stabilized capacity of 320 mA h g(-1) for 5900 cycles, with an excellent capacity retention of 96%.

Abstract:Nowadays, the development of promising anodes for Na and K ion batteries (NIB and KIB) has got great attention due to their sustainable and renewable energy applications. Graphite is a good candidate but suffers from low Na (<35 mAhg-1) and K ion storage capacities (∼274 mAhg-1) in the experiment. In this paper, based on the first-principles calculations, we demonstrate that graphite nanomesh with the hole density of 46% (GN46) is a promising anode material for both the NIB and KIB. Remarkably, there are 361 ∼ 482 mAhg-1 ion storage capacity for the NIB and 482 ∼ 602 mAhg-1 ion storage capacity for the KIB in the GN46. The in-plane diffusion barriers of Na and K ions are calculated as small as 0.59 and 0.19 eV, respectively. Besides, the holey structure opens an additional out-plane diffusing channel with only 1/14 and 1/10 of the diffusion barrier of those in graphite for Na and K ions. These diffusing properties suggest an improved rate capacity for batteries. Finally, the GN46 shows relatively small superficial area change ratio of less than 3% during the charging process, implying safety in applications. Hence, graphite nanomesh is a promising anode for the NIB and KIB.
