Abstract:Carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) is a crucial technology for global climate mitigation. To implement large-scale CCUS, decisions about where and how to build a CO2 transportation network are urgently required. However, previous studies are limited in proposing the economical transportation network for CCUS that considered comprehensive risks from socio-economic, geographical and geological factors. Here, we develop a pipeline layout planning model to investigate the cost-effective and reliable transportation network for CCUS. Results show that to meet the annual CO2 emission reduction target of 654 million tons for CCUS in the coal-fired power sector under China's carbon neutral goal, pipelines with a total length of 17,589 km need to be constructed. The emission sources can be transported in pipelines with an average radius of 58 km, and with diameters of 8, 12, and 16 inches. Northeast, north, and northwest China are the main areas suitable for pipeline construction.

Abstract:China's carbon neutrality target is building momentum for carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS), by which the power sector may attain faster decarbonization in the short term. However, an overall CCUS pipeline network blueprint remains poorly understood. This study, for the first time, links the China TIMES model and ChinaCCUS Decision Support System 2.0 to assess representative CCUS layouts for the power sector toward carbon neutrality, with the level of deployment and the maximum transportation distance from emission sources to storage sites considered. The total length of the proposed layouts under the low, medium, and high levels of deployment are about 5100, 18,000, and 37,000 km, with the annum CO2 captures of 0.4, 1.1, and 1.7 Gt, respectively, whereas pipes of medium diameters (12, 16, and 20 in) account for the majority in all three plans. As the deployment rate increases, the layouts generally spread from Northeast, North, and Northwest China to East, South Central, and Southwest China. However, some local exceptions take place considering terrain areas that the pipeline passes through. In addition to engineering guidance, this assessment also illuminates the opportunity for improving the efficiency of CCUS based on carbon pricing.

Abstract:Carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) technology plays a crucial role in the pursuit of carbon neutrality. To reduce the cost of carbon neutrality, it is necessary to optimally design the supply chain of CCUS, which leads to mega scale problems for vast countries such as China. In this paper, a novel three-module framework including source-sink matching, meshing, and pipeline transportation network allocating, which has the advantage of plant-level decision and trunk transportation while keeping the size of the model solvable, is proposed. In addition, a database including major CO2 emission sources in thermal power, cement, and iron-steel sectors as well as major CO2 storage sinks in China is set up. By comparison of scenarios with and without offshore storage, offshore storage is found to be superior in those southern coastal provinces. With a transportation distance not exceeding 250 km, around 4.2 Gt of CO2 can be captured and stored. Simultaneously, establishing sensible CCUS deployment objectives is crucial. As the planned deployment capacity rises from 601.8 to 1203.5 Mt/year, the unit net supply chain cost will elevate from 28.5 $/tonCO2 to 36.0 $/ton, marking a 26% increase. Moreover, the evolution of CCUS deployment toward achieving carbon neutrality between 2025 and 2050 is analyzed. Notably, early stage deployment is suitable for provinces in northern China, while other provinces are anticipated to engage in subsequent phases. The comparative study indicates that CCUS is more economically viable than introducing green power and green hydrogen in the thermal power, iron-steel, and cement sectors for emission reduction.

Abstract:The modern coal chemical industry is a typical high carbon emission industry, which has formed a large-scale development in China. In the context of carbon neutrality, it is considered to be an ideal combination mode that captures high-concentration CO2 emitted by the modern coal chemical plants and transports it to oilfields through pipelines, which can both realize the low-carbon development goals of the modern coal chemical industry and reduce the cost of the whole process of Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS), as well as promote the development of CCS in China. Based on the data from modern coal chemical projects and depleted oil basins across China, a model of a pipeline network with optimal layout design was constructed, aiming to achieve specific emission reduction targets. Meanwhile, its economic effects will be analyzed. It turns out that this layout can help achieve an annual emission reduction of 280 million tons of CO2, with an average annual net income of USD 2.20 billion, and a unit net income of USD 7.85 per ton of CO2. A total of 166 pipelines up to 15,783 km in total length need to be built across China. Suitable storage sites can be found within an average radius of 94 km for emission sources. A total of 11,115 km of pipelines needs to be built in the "Three North" areas, accounting for 70.4% of the total pipeline length.

An Optimization Model for Carbon Capture Utilization and Storage Supply Chain: A Case Study in Northeastern China

Abstract:In recent years, several strategies have been developed and adopted in a bid to diminish the carbon dioxide (CO2) released into the atmosphere. Carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) system is one of the options. In this paper, we develop a CCUS supply chain superstructure by introducing more comprehensive transportation routes as well as the resultant system deployment schemes. A mixed integer linear programming (MILP) model is proposed to optimize the strategic CCUS deployment in Northeast China by making simultaneous selection of emission sources, capture facilitates, CO2 pipeline, intermediate transportation sites, utilization and storage sites. The CCUS cost includes the cost of flue gas dehydration, CO2 capture, transportation and injection, and revenue from CO2 utilization through enhanced oil recovery (CO2-EOR). The overall network is economically optimized over a 20 years' life span to provide the geographic distribution and scale of capture, utilization and sequestration sites as well as the transportation routes for different scenarios. The results suggest that it is economic feasible to reduce 50% of the current CO2 emissions from the stationary sources at a total annual cost $2.30 billion accompanied with $0.77 billion of revenue generated annually through CO2-EOR. Overall, the optimal CCUS supply chain network correspond to a net cost of $23.53 per ton of CO2. The results are compared with source-sink model and it can be observed that the total annualized net cost is reduced from $1.62 billion to $1.53 billion and the transportation cost are reduced from $0.27 billion to $0.19 billion.

Abstract:Carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) may play an important role for China to achieve the goal of carbon neutrality by 2060. It is of practical significance to identify an optimal CCUS transport infrastructure to connect many CO2 emission sources and storage sinks widely scattered across different areas. There is, however, little research on source-sink matching (SSM) for national-scale CCUS involving different emission industries and different types of storage sinks. To analyse wide CCUS implementation under carbon taxes and CO2 pipeline networks across China in the future, this study estimated the storage potential of 214 onshore oilfields, and conducted nationwide SSM in the Chinese Mainland via the improved ChinaCCS decision support system (DSS). It is found that the CO2 storage potential reaches approximately 3.6 Gt when all onshore oilfields are considered for CO2 enhanced oil recovery (EOR), and it reaches approximately 4.6 Gt when all onshore oilfields are regarded as depleted oil reservoirs. In the case of a carbon tax on carbon emissions, a step-like growth in the CO2 capture and storage amount occurs with increasing carbon tax, that is when the carbon tax ranges from $25.74-33.09/t CO2 and $44.12-51.47/t CO2, the CCUS amount rapidly increases, while the CCUS amount remains relatively stable at the other carbon tax levels. When the carbon tax is higher than $51.47/t CO2, all CO2 emission sources fully implement CO2 capture, large complex networks constructed in North, East and Central-South China, where CO2 is sequestered near emission sources. Under the above scenario, the total length of 780 pipelines is 5.03 x 104 km, the average transport distance is 67.85 km, and pipes with diameters of 12 and 16 inches represent the majority. Considering the possibility of implementing CCUS in North, East and South China in the future, it is necessary to further select reasonable CO2 capture sources and storage sinks, while reserving areas for pipeline laying.

Abstract:It is of great significance for the engineering popularization of CO2-ECBM technology to evaluate the potential of CCUS source and sink and study the matching of pipeline network of deep unworkable seam. In this study, the deep unworkable seam was taken as the research object. Firstly, the evaluation method of CO2 storage potential in deep unworkable seam was discussed. Secondly, the CO2 storage potential was analyzed. Then, the matching research of CO2 source and sink was carried out, and the pipe network design was optimized. Finally, suggestions for the design of pipe network are put forward from the perspective of time and space scale. The results show that the average annual CO2 emissions of coal-fired power plants vary greatly, and the total emissions are 58.76 million tons. The CO2 storage potential in deep unworkable seam is huge with a total amount of 762 million tons, which can store CO2 for 12.97 years. During the 10-year period, the deep unworkable seam can store 587.6 million tons of CO2, and the cumulative length of pipeline is 251.61 km with requiring a cumulative capital of $ 4.26 × 1010. In the process of CO2 source-sink matching, the cumulative saving mileage of carbon sink is 98.75 km, and the cumulative saving cost is $ 25.669 billion with accounting for 39.25% and 60.26% of the total mileage and cost, respectively. Based on the three-step approach, the whole line of CO2 source and sink in Huainan coalfield can be completed by stages and regions, and all CO2 transportation and storage can be realized. CO2 pipelines include gas collection and distribution branch lines, intra-regional trunk lines, and interregional trunk lines. Based on the reasonable layout of CO2 pipelines, a variety of CCS applications can be simultaneously carried out, intra-regional and inter-regional CO2 transport network demonstrations can be built, and integrated business models of CO2 transport and storage can be simultaneously built on land and sea. The research results can provide reference for the evaluation of CO2 sequestration potential of China's coal bases, and lay a foundation for the deployment of CCUS clusters.

Abstract:Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS) is an indispensable technology to achieve carbon neutrality in China, but confined by technology and economy, the offshore CCUS in China is still in the planning stage and has not yet reached the desired scale. Offshore source-sink matching and cost analysis of CCUS is the premise and basis of offshore CCUS deployment. Thus, based on the CO 2 storage potential of offshore sedimentary basins in China, this paper conducts the offshore source-sink matching and cost analysis of CCUS in China under different constraints. The result showed that: i) the CO 2 storage capacity of China's offshore sedimentary basins is estimated to be 767.3 Gt, which is enough to meet approximately 200 years of coal power CO 2 emissions in China. ii) the CO 2 storage potential could reach 721.9 Mt/a by source-sink matching under different constraints. iii) early opportunities for offshore CCUS would be in the Bohai Bay and Pearl River Mouth Basin, considering the compensation effect of CO 2 -EOR. iv) combined with the CCUS cost and emission reduction in China under different time nodes, it is inferred that deploying offshore CCUS in China between 2030 and 2040 commercially will be advantageous.

Abstract:Carbon dioxide (CO2) is one of the primary anthropogenic greenhouse gases (GHGs), and its increasing emission has drawn wide attention from the international community. Among the strategies for CO2 diminishment, carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) is considered as the key option. The objective of this work is to develop an optimization-based assessment framework that aims to incorporate CO2 storage and CO2 utilization into an integrated framework. To achieve this goal, a superstructure network including all the sections of CCUS supply chain is proposed, which includes CO2 capture, transportation, storage and utilization with 15 candidate conversion process paths. Based on this superstructure, a mathematical model for the optimal design of a supply chain of CCUS is developed. CO2 would be stored underground and/or utilized to produce chemical products through candidate conversion paths. Finally, a case with real data of large emission sources in Northeast China is studied. Three different scenarios are investigated, according to key constraints on CCUS network: CO2 emission source, raw material limits and products demands limits. Results show that adsorption is the preferred capture technology at relative high flue gas flow rate and high CO2 concentration. Storing CO2 is the recommended approach compared with utilization from the point of economy, however, carbon utilization could be a more sustainable option and may generate a carbon-neutral cycle. With the increase of CO2 utilization, the cost of CCUS supply chain also increase (Scenario A: 2.49 billion $/y, Scenario B: 2.76 billion $/y, Scenario C: 2.85 billion $/y).

CCS Scenarios Optimization by Spatial Multi-Criteria Analysis: Application to Multiple Source Sink Matching in Hebei Province

Abstract:A method, based on spatial analysis of the different criteria to be taken into consideration for building scenarios of CO2 capture and storage (CCS), has been developed and applied to real case studies in the Hebei province. Totally 88 point sources (42 from power sector, 9 from iron and steel, 18 from cement, 16 from ammonia, and 3 from oil refinery) are estimated and their total emission amounts to 231.7MtCO2/year with power, iron and steel, cement, ammonia and oil refinery sharing 59.13%, 25.03%, 11.44%, 3.5%, and 0.91%, respectively. Storage opportunities can be found in Hebei province, characterised by a strong tectonic subsidence during the Tertiary, with several kilometres of accumulated clastic sediments. Carbon storage potential for 25 hydrocarbon fields selected from the Huabei complex is estimated as 215MtCO2 with optimistic assumption that all recovered hydrocarbon could be replaced by an equivalent volume of CO2 at reservoir conditions. Storage potential for aquifers in the Miocene Guantao formation is estimated as 747MtCO2 if closed aquifer assumed or 371MtCO2 if open aquifer and single highly permeable horizon assumed. Due to poor knowledge on deep hydrogeology and to pressure increase in aquifer, injecting very high rates requested by the major CO2 sources (>10MtCO2/year) is the main challenge, therefore piezometry and discharge must be carefully controlled. A source sink matching model using ArcGIS software is designed to find the least-cost pathway and to estimate transport route and cost accounting for the additional costs of pipeline construction due to landform and land use. Source sink matching results show that only 15–25% of the emissions estimated for the 88 sources can be sequestrated into the hydrocarbon fields and the aquifers if assuming sinks should be able to accommodate at least 15 years of the emissions of a given source.
CCUS source-sink matching dynamic programming model based on GAMS

Abstract:Successful large-scale deployment of carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) will require extensive pipeline networks to transport CO2 from the sources, such as power plants, to the sinks, such as depleted oilfields. Reasonable source-sink matching (SSM) can substantially reduce the CCUS system overhead. As a large infrastructure investment, CCUS pipeline networks should be built on an appropriate schedule during development, considering both cash constraints and economic optimization. A CCUS source-sink matching multi-stage dynamic programming model was developed based on GAMS to design CO2 pipeline layouts and analyze their economic feasibility. The model first generates a candidate pipeline network using a pre-optimization algorithm using two different approaches. Then, the source-sink matching problem is treated as a mixed integer programming problem which is solved using GAMS/Cplex. A case study of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region shows that this model effectively designs multi-stage CCUS pipe networks with the transportation pipeline topology structure, the positions and quantities of CCUS, and the pipe diameters in each stage. The multi-stage dynamic programming results create more graph connectivity than single-stage static programming.

Abstract:Carbon capture and storage (CCS) has emerged as a promising way for achieving deep decarbonization of China’s steel sector. Large-scale CCS deployment necessitates a comprehensive source-sink matching analysis to offer early engineering guidance. To address this issue, this study conducted a source-sink matching analysis of China’s steel sector, assessing CO2 sources, CO2 storage capacities and costs, and CO2 pipeline layouts under three capture targets. The findings reveal an obvious spatial mismatch between CO2 sources and potential CO2 sinks for China’s steel sector. CO2 sources are mainly situated in eastern China, while main CO2 storage sites are located in western China. The average unit costs of CCS under low (30%), medium (60%), and full capture (90%) targets are 83, 91, and 118 $/t CO2, respectively. In particular, as capture target increases, the CO2 transportation cost will supersede the capture cost and dominate the average CCS unit cost, owing to the construction of longer pipelines. This study recommends prioritizing CCS demonstration with steel plants in regions having suitable CO2 storage basins nearby. Moreover, future investigations should concentrate on on-site experiments of CO2 storage basins and the technology development of offshore carbon storage in China.

Abstract:Carbon capture utilisation and storage (CCUS) is widely recognised as a key mitigation technology that can significantly reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emission. This study develops an optimisation framework focused on the economic and environmental aspects of Northeast China CCUS supply chain. The overall network is economically optimised over a 20 years’ time horizon to provide the geographic location and scale of capture and sequestration sites as well as the most convenient transport routes. The resulting problem is a multi-objective mixed integer linear programming (MILP) problem, whose objectives include minimising its total annual cost and minimising life cycle greenhouse gas (GHG) emission. The economic and environmental performances are optimised by e-constraint method. To demonstrate the application of the proposed model, a realistic case study from Northeast China involving 16 sources and 3 sinks is illustrated. The results provide valuable insights to adopt more sustainable strategic alternatives in the design of CCUS supply chain.

Abstract:A straightforward global layout of carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) is imperative for limiting global warming well below 2 °C. Here, we propose a cost-effective strategy for matching carbon sources and sinks on a global scale. Results show 3,093 carbon clusters and 432 sinks in 85 countries and regions are selected to achieve 92 GtCO2 mitigation by CCUS, 64% of which will be sequestered into sedimentary basins for aquifer storage and 36% will be used for CO2-EOR (enhanced oil recovery). Of the identified source–sink matching, 80% are distributed within 300 km and are mainly located in China, the United States, the European Union, Russia and India. The total cost is ~0.12% of global cumulative gross domestic product. Of countries with CO2-EOR, 75% will turn into profitable at the oil price over US$100 per barrel. These findings indicate our proposed layout is economically feasible. However, its implementation requires global collaboration on financial and technological transfer.

Abstract:Carbon capture utilization and storage (CCUS) emerges as a pivotal strategy for CO2 2 reduction in the power sector, particularly focusing on the overlooked domain of offshore storage along China's east coast. In spite of the potential high costs, irreversible investments, and lengthy development, offshore storage can still be prospective. Considering autonomous decision-making among emission sources, this study pioneers a CO2 2 offshore storage investment decision model tailored for coal-fired and gas-fired power plants. Innovating an offshore storage source-sink matching model with a real options model and introducing a pipeline network optimization model allows a realistic source-sink matching strategy to be explored under optimal investment timing. According to the results, among 154 large stationary emission sources in Zhejiang Province, offshore storage could reduce CO2 2 emissions by 4.59 Gt, utilizing the Qiantang, Minjiang, and Fuzhou depressions. It is economically feasible to implement offshore storage with a whole-process unit cost of 368.8 CNY/tCO2, CO2 , mainly dominated by capture costs. A hybrid carbon tax-subsidy policy promotes carbon reduction and economic benefits, offering a more effective incentive for emission sources to invest in offshore storage than a single policy. At a hybrid policy price of 250 CNY/tCO2, CO2 , all 27 selected emission sources are projected to invest in offshore storage by 2048, with a preference for the Qiantang depression as the storage site. Practically, this study provides important technical support and guidance for the large-scale deployment of offshore storage.

Abstract:In order to reduce CO2 emissions from industrial processes, countries have commenced the vigorous development of CCUS (carbon capture, utilization and storage) technology. The high geographical overlap between China's extensive coal mining regions and CO2-emitting industrial parks provides an opportunity for the more efficient reduction in CO2 emissions through the development of Enhanced Coal Bed Methane (ECBM) Recovery for use with CCUS technology. Furthermore, the high geographical overlap and proximity of these regions allows for a shift in the transportation mode from pipelines to tanker trucks, which are more cost-effective and logistically advantageous. The issue of transportation must also be considered in order to more accurately assess the constructed cost function and CCUS source–sink matching model for the implementation of ECBM. The constructed model, when considered in conjunction with the actual situation in Shanxi Province, enables the matching of emission sources and sequestration sinks in the province to be realized through the use of ArcGIS 10.8 software, and the actual transport routes are derived as a result. After analyzing the matching results, it is found that the transportation cost accounts for a relatively small proportion of the total cost. In fact, the CH4 price has a larger impact on the total cost, and a high replacement ratio is not conducive to profitability. When the proportion of CO2 replacing CH4 increases from 1 to 3, the price of CH4 needs to increase from 643.23/t for sales to be profitable. In addition, electric vehicle transportation costs are lower compared to those of fuel and LNG vehicles, especially for high-mileage and frequent-use scenarios. In order to reduce the total cost, it is recommended to set aside the limitation of transportation distance when matching sources and sinks.

Abstract:CO 2 capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) technology is an indispensable technical means to reduce greenhouse gas CO 2 emissions and achieve China's double carbon goals. In this study, we explored the economic costs of CO 2 saline aquifer storage as a pure emission reduction measure without additional benefits under the influence of the carbon price mechanism, thereby adopting an energy cost potential perspective. To achieving the least cost (including capture, transport, storage, etc.), this study evaluated the economic feasibility of CO 2 geological storage for each 10 km × 10 km grid in China under multiple CCUS scenarios in 2030–2060. It focuses on whether each grid in China can achieve substantial carbon emission reduction by using CO 2 geological storage under given constraints. These findings could guide corporations in prioritizing the deployment of emission reduction actions at a macro level, and provide an estimated cost reference for emission reduction across various provincial administrative regions in China.

Optimizing large-scale CO2 pipeline networks using a geospatial splitting approach

Abstract:CO2 transport infrastructure is the backbone of carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology for the mitigation of carbon emissions and project deployment viability. In conventional large-scale CO2 pipeline network designs, the storage sites are generally assumed as the centroids of the major geologic basins, however, this approach might provide suboptimal solutions since the large extension of some storage formations significantly increases the length of the CO2 transportation networks. To address this situation and obtain optimal pipeline routes, we present a novel geospatial splitting framework that partitions large basins into multiple sub-sinks. In our approach, we used a large number of reservoir models varying petrophysical properties and CO2 injection rates to compute pressure plumes through numerical simulations, leading to the calculation of the number of subregions for each basin as a function of the extension of pressure interference areas and boundaries. Finally, we applied K-means clustering and Voronoi polygon algorithms to partition large basins into subregions and obtain their sink coordinates. To demonstrate the capability of the developed workflow, we investigated two CO2 pipeline network modeling case studies using our splitting approach: one regional case study focusing on the Intermountain West (I-West) region and one nationwide case study covering the lower 48 states in the U.S. In both case studies, we compared the optimal pipeline routes using the original and new storage locations and examined the major differences. The use of the developed geospatial approach resulted in both cases in a shortening of the total pipeline network length by 13% and 10%, compared to the pipeline modeling with the original basins, leading to cost reductions of 25% and 17%, respectively, demonstrating that the location of point sinks has a critical impact on the length and expenses of pipelines to efficiently transport CO2 to distant storage sites. Therefore, the workflow presented here contributes to the proper and realistic modeling of case studies that support decision-making in CCS deployment.
Emission reduction path for coal-based enterprises via carbon capture, geological utilization, and storage: China energy group

Abstract:The goal of carbon neutrality poses significant challenges and opportunities to traditional coal production, processing, and utilization enterprises. Carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) is a critical option to reduce carbon emissions for coal-based enterprises. Based on enterprise data and geological data, this study quantitatively evaluates the techno-economic feature and potential of CCUS in China Energy Group using systematical source-sink matching and carbon reduction contribution methods. With the current technical level and only considering the scenario of CO 2 -enhanced water recovery (CO 2 -EWR), an enterprise using CCUS to reduce CO 2 is feasible. About 73% of the installed capacity of the enterprise is suitable for CCUS, and the cumulative CO 2 emission reduction is more significant than 580 Mt/a with 135 g/kWh of the final CO 2 emission intensity. Additionally, the emission reduction contribution of CCUS is predicted to be 10%–29.5% from 2020 to 2060. The cost of full-chain CCUS in the enterprise is controllable. The levelized avoidance cost ( LAC ) of coal chemical plants with a high concentration of CO 2 is less than 23 USD/t, the average LAC of coal-fired power plants is 68.6 USD/t, and the average levelized additional cost of electricity is 52.9 USD/MWh. Taking the local feed-in tariff as a standard, the cost of EWR is more competitive than the cost of wind and solar power generation combined with energy storage technology. Considering technological advances and the CCUS hub, which uses common infrastructure to transport and store CO 2 , EWR costs for coal-fired power will be drastically reduced. Coal-based enterprises can prioritize deploying low-cost CO 2 -EWR demonstration projects, research and develop key technologies, and form full-chains integrated systems and the CCUS hub. This study provides a basis for coal-based enterprises to reduce large-scale emissions and develop low-carbon transformation through CCUS technology.
