Abstract:Objective: To improve the timeliness for the early COVID-19 infection diagnosis, it is essential to develop a decision- making tool to assist early diagnosis of COVID-19 patients in fever clinics. Materials and methods: This paper aims at extracting risk factors from clinical data of 912 early COVID-19 infected patients and utilizing four types of traditional machine learning approaches including Logistic Regression (LR), Support Vector Machine (SVM), Decision Tree (DT), Random Forest (RF) and a deep learning-based method for diagnosis of early COVID-19. Results: The results show that the LR predictive model presents a higher specificity rate of 0.95, an Area Under the receiver operating Curve (AUC) of 0.971 and an improved sensitivity rate of 0.82, which makes it optimal for the screening of early COVID-19 infection. We also perform the verification for generality of the best model (LR predictive model) among Zhejiang population, and analyse the contribution of the factors to the predictive models. Discussions: Under the background of COVID-19 pandemic, the early diagnosis of COVID-19 still face severe challenges, a decision-making tool assisting early diagnosis of COVID-19 patients is vital for fever clinics. Conclusions: Our manuscript describes and highlights the ability of machine learning methods for improving the accuracy and timeliness of early COVID-19 infection diagnosis. The higher AUC of our LR-base predictive model makes it a more conducive method for assisting COVID-19 diagnosis. The optimal model has been encapsulated as a mobile application (APP) and implemented in some hospitals in Zhejiang Province.
A Comparative Study of Hybrid Models in Health Misinformation Text Classification

Abstract:This study evaluates the effectiveness of machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) models in detecting COVID-19-related misinformation on online social networks (OSNs), aiming to develop more effective tools for countering the spread of health misinformation during the pan-demic. The study trained and tested various ML classifiers (Naive Bayes, SVM, Random Forest, etc.), DL models (CNN, LSTM, hybrid CNN+LSTM), and pretrained language models (DistilBERT, RoBERTa) on the "COVID19-FNIR DATASET". These models were evaluated for accuracy, F1 score, recall, precision, and ROC, and used preprocessing techniques like stemming and lemmatization. The results showed SVM performed well, achieving a 94.41% F1-score. DL models with Word2Vec embeddings exceeded 98% in all performance metrics (accuracy, F1 score, recall, precision & ROC). The CNN+LSTM hybrid models also exceeded 98% across performance metrics, outperforming pretrained models like DistilBERT and RoBERTa. Our study concludes that DL and hybrid DL models are more effective than conventional ML algorithms for detecting COVID-19 misinformation on OSNs. The findings highlight the importance of advanced neural network approaches and large-scale pretraining in misinformation detection. Future research should optimize these models for various misinformation types and adapt to changing OSNs, aiding in combating health misinformation.

Abstract:The quick advancement of technology in internet communication and social media platforms eased several problems during the COVID-19 outbreak. It was, however, used to spread untruths and misinformation regarding the illness and the immunization. In this study, it is examined whether machine-learning algorithms (Naive Bayesian, Random Forest, Logistic Regression, Decision Tree, and Support Vector Machine, as well as Gradient Boost, Bagging, AdaBoost, Stochastic Gradient Descent, and Multi-layer Perceptron) can automatically classify and point out fake news text about the COVID-19 pandemic posted on social media platforms. The "COVID19-FNIR DATASET" was used to train, test, and fine-tune machine learning models in order to predict the sentiment class of each fake news item on COVID-19. The results were assessed using a variety of evaluation metrics (confusion matrix, classification rate, true positives rate, etc.). The findings collected demonstrate an extremely high level of accuracy when compared to other models.

Abstract:A drastic rise in potentially life-threatening misinformation has been a by-product of the COVID-19 pandemic. Computational support to identify false information within the massive body of data on the topic is crucial to prevent harm. Researchers proposed many methods for flagging online misinformation related to COVID-19. However, these methods predominantly target specific content types (e.g., news) or platforms (e.g., Twitter). The methods’ capabilities to generalize were largely unclear so far. We evaluate fifteen Transformer-based models on five COVID-19 misinformation datasets that include social media posts, news articles, and scientific papers to fill this gap. We show tokenizers and models tailored to COVID-19 data do not provide a significant advantage over general-purpose ones. Our study provides a realistic assessment of models for detecting COVID-19 misinformation. We expect that evaluating a broad spectrum of datasets and models will benefit future research in developing misinformation detection systems.

Abstract:Background: During the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, we are being exposed to large amounts of information each day. This "infodemic" is defined by the World Health Organization as the mass spread of misleading or false information during a pandemic. This spread of misinformation during the infodemic ultimately leads to misunderstandings of public health orders or direct opposition against public policies. Although there have been efforts to combat misinformation spread, current manual fact-checking methods are insufficient to combat the infodemic. Objective: We propose the use of natural language processing (NLP) and machine learning (ML) techniques to build a model that can be used to identify unreliable news articles online. Methods: First, we preprocessed the ReCOVery data set to obtain 2029 English news articles tagged with COVID-19 keywords from January to May 2020, which are labeled as reliable or unreliable. Data exploration was conducted to determine major differences between reliable and unreliable articles. We built an ensemble deep learning model using the body text, as well as features, such as sentiment, Empath-derived lexical categories, and readability, to classify the reliability. Results: We found that reliable news articles have a higher proportion of neutral sentiment, while unreliable articles have a higher proportion of negative sentiment. Additionally, our analysis demonstrated that reliable articles are easier to read than unreliable articles, in addition to having different lexical categories and keywords. Our new model was evaluated to achieve the following performance metrics: 0.906 area under the curve (AUC), 0.835 specificity, and 0.945 sensitivity. These values are above the baseline performance of the original ReCOVery model. Conclusions: This paper identified novel differences between reliable and unreliable news articles; moreover, the model was trained using state-of-the-art deep learning techniques. We aim to be able to use our findings to help researchers and the public audience more easily identify false information and unreliable media in their everyday lives.

Abstract:Fake news is challenging to detect due to mixing accurate and inaccurate information from reliable and unreliable sources. Social media is a data source that is not trustworthy all the time, especially in the COVID-19 outbreak. During the COVID-19 epidemic, fake news is widely spread. The best way to deal with this is early detection. Accordingly, in this work, we have proposed a hybrid deep learning model that uses convolutional neural network (CNN) and long short-term memory (LSTM) to detect COVID-19 fake news. The proposed model consists of some layers: an embedding layer, a convolutional layer, a pooling layer, an LSTM layer, a flatten layer, a dense layer, and an output layer. For experimental results, three COVID-19 fake news datasets are used to evaluate six machine learning models, two deep learning models, and our proposed model. The machine learning models are DT, KNN, LR, RF, SVM, and NB, while the deep learning models are CNN and LSTM. Also, four matrices are used to validate the results: accuracy, precision, recall, and F1-measure. The conducted experiments show that the proposed model outperforms the six machine learning models and the two deep learning models. Consequently, the proposed system is capable of detecting the fake news of COVID-19 significantly.

Abstract:The rampant of COVID-19 infodemic has almost been simultaneous with the outbreak of the pandemic. Many concerted efforts are made to mitigate its negative effect to information credibility and data legitimacy. Existing work mainly focuses on fact-checking algorithms or multi-class labeling models that are less aware of the intrinsic characteristics of the language. Nor is it discussed how such representations can account for the common psycho-socio-behavior of the information consumers. This work takes a data-driven analytical approach to (1) describe the prominent lexical and grammatical features of COVID-19 misinformation; (2) interpret the underlying (psycho-)linguistic triggers in terms of sentiment, power and activity based on the affective control theory; (3) study the feature indexing for anti-infodemic modeling. The results show distinct language generalization patterns of misinformation of favoring evaluative terms and multimedia devices in delivering a negative sentiment. Such appeals are effective to arouse people’s sympathy toward the vulnerable community and foment their spreading behavior.

Abstract:Coronavirus (COVID-19) is a major threat to the country. People get scared on seeing the posts related to COVID-19 on the social media. This paper focusses on this issue and applies Natural Language Processing (NLP) techniques on Sina Weibo data to classify COVID-19-related information into seven categories including warning and advice, notice and action, contribution of money, products or services, emotional support, looking for help, expressing and assessing doubts and counter-rumours based on situational information. Only situational intelligence is of use to the public and the authorities to respond to the outbreak. It is, therefore, necessary to recognise them and comprehend how it is being distributed on social media, so that proper information publication techniques can be updated about the COVID-19 outbreak. The informative efficiency of word embedding is tested and compared with a Bag-of-Words (BoW) approach based on classification accuracy. The initial findings indicate the guaranteed capability of the textual data in the overview of various stages of the outbreak. Emergency response reviews from social media after the epidemic offer useful insights about effective public health conditions. On Sina Weibo, the influential Chinese social media, posts with negative feelings are useful in analysing public issues. About 999,978 randomly chosen COVID-19 based Weibo articles are reviewed from 1 January 2020 to 18 February 2020. From the results, it is evident that the proposed system generates accurate information about COVID-19 so that people need not rely on social media.

Abstract:The coronavirus pandemic emerged in early 2020 and turned out to be deadly, killing a vast number of people all around the world. Fortunately, vaccines have been discovered, and they seem effectual in controlling the severe prognosis induced by the virus. The reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) test is the current golden standard for diagnosing different infectious diseases, including COVID-19; however, it is not always accurate. Therefore, it is extremely crucial to find an alternative diagnosis method which can support the results of the standard RT-PCR test. Hence, a decision support system has been proposed in this study that uses machine learning and deep learning techniques to predict the COVID-19 diagnosis of a patient using clinical, demographic and blood markers. The patient data used in this research were collected from two Manipal hospitals in India and a custom-made, stacked, multi-level ensemble classifier has been used to predict the COVID-19 diagnosis. Deep learning techniques such as deep neural networks (DNN) and one-dimensional convolutional networks (1D-CNN) have also been utilized. Further, explainable artificial techniques (XAI) such as Shapley additive values (SHAP), ELI5, local interpretable model explainer (LIME), and QLattice have been used to make the models more precise and understandable. Among all of the algorithms, the multi-level stacked model obtained an excellent accuracy of 96%. The precision, recall, f1-score and AUC obtained were 94%, 95%, 94% and 98% respectively. The models can be used as a decision support system for the initial screening of coronavirus patients and can also help ease the existing burden on medical infrastructure.

Abstract:COVID-19 has affected all peoples' lives. Though COVID-19 is on the rising, the existence of misinformation about the virus also grows in parallel. Additionally, the spread of misinformation has created confusion among people, caused disturbances in society, and even led to deaths. Social media is central to our daily lives. The Internet has become a significant source of knowledge. Owing to the widespread damage caused by fake news, it is important to build computerized systems to detect fake news. The paper proposes an updated deep neural network for identification of false news. The deep learning techniques are The Modified-LSTM (one to three layers) and The Modified GRU (one to three layers). In particular, we carry out investigations of a large dataset of tweets passing on data with respect to COVID-19. In our study, we separate the dubious claims into two categories: true and false. We compare the performance of the various algorithms in terms of prediction accuracy. The six machine learning techniques are decision trees, logistic regression, k nearest neighbors, random forests, support vector machines, and naïve Bayes (NB). The parameters of deep learning techniques are optimized using Keras-tuner. Four Benchmark datasets were used. Two feature extraction methods were used (TF-ID with N-gram) to extract essential features from the four benchmark datasets for the baseline machine learning model and word embedding feature extraction method for the proposed deep neural network methods. The results obtained with the proposed framework reveal high accuracy in detecting Fake and non-Fake tweets containing COVID-19 information. These results demonstrate significant improvement as compared to the existing state of art results of baseline machine learning models. In our approach, we classify the data into two categories: fake or nonfake. We compare the execution of the proposed approaches with Six machine learning procedures. Abstract:Reactivation of Herpes simplex virus (HSV) following manipulation of the trigeminal nerve root. has been reported in a substantial number of immunocompetent patients. Usually it was manifest as an oral mucocutaneous lesion and considered a benign postoperative complication. In the case described here, however, severe respiratory distress due to herpetic pneumonia developed following a pontocerebellar angle surgery complicated by an orolabial herpetic lesion. The delays necessary to confirm HSV diagnosis prior to initiating treatment are discussed, considering the rarity of this complication following neurosurgery.

Abstract:COVID-19 has been a global pandemic. Flattening the curve requires intensive testing, and the world has been facing a shortage of testing equipment and medical personnel with expertise. There is a need to automate and aid the detection process. Several diagnostic tools are currently being used for COVID-19, including X-Rays and CT-scans. This study focuses on detecting COVID-19 from X-Rays. We pursue two types of problems: binary classification (COVID-19 and No COVID-19) and multi-class classification (COVID-19, No COVID-19 and Pneumonia). We examine and evaluate several classic models, namely VGG19, ResNet50, MobileNetV2, InceptionV3, Xception, DenseNet121, and specialized models such as DarkCOVIDNet and COVID-Net and prove that ResNet50 models perform best. We also propose a simple modification to the ResNet50 model, which gives a binary classification accuracy of 99.20% and a multi-class classification accuracy of 86.13%, hence cementing the ResNet50's abilities for COVID-19 detection and ability to differentiate pneumonia and COVID-19. The proposed model's explanations were interpreted via LIME which provides contours, and Grad-CAM, which provides heat-maps over the area(s) of interest of the classifier, i.e., COVID-19 concentrated regions in the lungs, and realize that LIME explains the results better. These explanations support our model's ability to generalize. The proposed model is intended to be deployed for free use.

Abstract:Objective: The high incidence of respiratory diseases has dramatically increased the medical burden under the COVID-19 pandemic in the year 2020. It is of considerable significance to utilize a new generation of information technology to improve the artificial intelligence level of respiratory disease diagnosis. Methods: Based on the semi-structured data of Chinese Electronic Medical Records (CEMRs) from the China Hospital Pharmacovigilance System, this paper proposed a bi-level artificial intelligence model for the risk classification of acute respiratory diseases. It includes two levels. The first level is a dedicated design of the “BiLSTM+Dilated Convolution+3D Attention+CRF” deep learning model that is used for Chinese Clinical Named Entity Recognition (CCNER) to extract valuable information from the unstructured data in the CEMRs. Incorporating the transfer learning and semi-supervised learning technique into the proposed deep learning model achieves higher accuracy and efficiency in the CCNER task than the popular “Bert+BiLSTM+CRF” approach. Combining the extracted entity data with other structured data in the CEMRs, the second level is a customized XGBoost to realize the risk classification of acute respiratory diseases. Results: The empirical study shows that the proposed model could provide practical technical support for improving diagnostic accuracy. Conclusion: Our study provides a proof-of-concept for implementing a hybrid artificial intelligence-based system as a tool to aid clinicians in tackling CEMR data and enhancing the diagnostic evaluation under diagnostic uncertainty.

Abstract:The COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on public life and health worldwide, putting the world’s healthcare systems at risk. The first step in stopping this outbreak is to detect the infection in its early stages, which will relieve the risk, control the outbreak’s spread, and restore full functionality to the world’s healthcare systems. Currently, PCR is the most prevalent diagnosis tool for COVID-19. However, chest X-ray images may play an essential role in detecting this disease, as they are successful for many other viral pneumonia diseases. Unfortunately, there are common features between COVID-19 and other viral pneumonia, and hence manual differentiation between them seems to be a critical problem and needs the aid of artificial intelligence. This research employs deep- and transfer-learning techniques to develop accurate, general, and robust models for detecting COVID-19. The developed models utilize either convolutional neural networks or transfer-learning models or hybridize them with powerful machine-learning techniques to exploit their full potential. For experimentation, we applied the proposed models to two data sets: the COVID-19 Radiography Database from Kaggle and a local data set from Asir Hospital, Abha, Saudi Arabia. The proposed models achieved promising results in detecting COVID-19 cases and discriminating them from normal and other viral pneumonia with excellent accuracy. The hybrid models extracted features from the flatten layer or the first hidden layer of the neural network and then fed these features into a classification algorithm. This approach enhanced the results further to full accuracy for binary COVID-19 classification and 97.8% for multiclass classification.

Abstract:The explosion of disinformation accompanying the COVID-19 pandemic has overloaded fact-checkers and media worldwide, and brought a new major challenge to government responses worldwide. Not only is disinformation creating confusion about medical science amongst citizens, but it is also amplifying distrust in policy makers and governments. To help tackle this, we developed computational methods to categorise COVID-19 disinformation. The COVID-19 disinformation categories could be used for a) focusing fact-checking efforts on the most damaging kinds of COVID-19 disinformation; b) guiding policy makers who are trying to deliver effective public health messages and counter effectively COVID-19 disinformation. This paper presents: 1) a corpus containing what is currently the largest available set of manually annotated COVID-19 disinformation categories; 2) a classification-aware neural topic model (CANTM) designed for COVID-19 disinformation category classification and topic discovery; 3) an extensive analysis of COVID-19 disinformation categories with respect to time, volume, false type, media type and origin source.

Abstract:In recent times, the use of chest Computed Tomography (CT) images for detecting coronavirus infections has gained significant attention, owing to their ability to reveal bilateral changes in affected individuals. However, classifying patients from medical images presents a formidable challenge, particularly in identifying such bilateral changes. To tackle this challenge, our study harnesses the power of deep learning models for the precise classification of infected patients. Our research involves a comparative analysis of deep transfer learning-based classification models, including DenseNet201, GoogleNet, and AlexNet, against carefully chosen supervised learning models. Additionally, our work encompasses Covid-19 classification, which involves the identification and differentiation of medical images, such as X-rays and electrocardiograms, that exhibit telltale signs of Covid-19 infection. This comprehensive approach ensures that our models can handle a wide range of medical image types and effectively identify characteristic patterns indicative of Covid-19. By conducting meticulous research and employing advanced deep learning techniques, we have made significant strides in enhancing the accuracy and speed of Covid-19 diagnosis. Our results demonstrate the effectiveness of these models and their potential to make substantial contributions to the global effort to combat COVID-19.

Therefore, it is imperative to develop a high-accuracy system that makes use of Artificial Intelligence and its tools considering its contribution to computer vision. The time consumed to diagnose test outcomes is to be taken care of as a crucial aspect of an efficient model. To address the global challenges faced by the COVID-19 pandemic, this study proposed two deep learning models developed for automatic COVID-19 detection and distinguish it from pneumonia, another common lung disease. The proposed designs implement layered convolutional neural networks and are trained on a data set of 1824 chest X-rays for binary classification (COVID-19 and normal) and 2736 chest X-rays for ternary classification (COVID-19, normal, and pneumonia). The input images and hyper-parameters in the convolution layers are fine-tuned during the model training phase. The observations show that the proposed models have achieved a better performance as compared to their earlier contemporaries' approaches, resulting in accuracy, precision, recall, and F-score of 98.91%, 98.5%, 98.5%, and 99% for binary-class and 95.99%, 96.3%, 96%, and 96.33% for ternary-class classifiers, respectively. The presented architectures have been built from scratch, thus with the implemented convolutional layered architecture, they were successful in providing more efficient and early diagnosis of the disease.
