Abstract:Cities face frequent flood disasters with devastating impact on lives and property. Geospatial analysis using high elevation points can help to map out emergency evacuation centres for decision making on flood risk management. This research maps and analyses flood emergency evacuation centres in Accra. The objectives of this research were to map out flood hazard and vulnerable settlements, analyse the spatial distribution and identify the optimal locations for flood emergency evacuation sites. The data for this study comprises digital elevation models, stream networks, settlement data, flood risk zone maps of the study site and existing documents on flood disaster risk of the study area. This study adopted the weighted linear combination method to estimate site suitability for emergency evacuation sites. ArcGIS 10.6 was used to analyse the data. The research found that the optimal locations for potential evacuation centres are unevenly distributed between 300 m and 400 m above sea level, most which are in the north-eastern and north-western parts of Accra. The results can contribute to research, policy and decision-making on flood risk management in Accra and other localities with similar conditions. The research further contributes to literature on flood risk management and geographic information system.Contribution: This research is useful as mapping could increase awareness of evacuation sites to speed up rapid response to immediate impacts of flood events. The findings of the study will facilitate future decisions for demarcating potential flood emergency evacuation sites. The overall aim of this study is to contribute to literature, policy, spatial analysis and the practice of flood risk management in the study area. The research findings can also be applied to other flood-prone areas with similar contexts as the study site.
Optical properties of triplex DNA from time-dependent density functional theory.

Abstract:We present a combined investigation of the dynamics and optics of triplex DNA, based on classical molecular dynamics and time-dependent density functional theory. Our approach is devised to include the effects of conformational fluctuations on the electronic structure and optical excitations of the system. We find that the structural flexibility has a strong role in the determination of the optical signals. Our results allow us to unravel the peculiar fingerprints of Watson-Crick and Hoogsteen H-bonding in the optical absorption spectra. We find a specific optical absorption feature that is due to the simultaneous presence of the two H-bonding patterns in C(+)GC triplets. While this peculiar triplet signal is wiped out in some structures that are representative of the finite-temperature dynamics, it can be recovered in an average view, so that it is a pristine result of this work.

Abstract:Climate change seriously threatens human systems, properties and livelihoods. Global projections suggest a continuous increase in the frequency and severity of weather events, with severe outcomes. Although the trends and impacts are highly variable depending on location, most studies tend to concentrate on either the urban or rural areas, with little focus on peri-urban areas. Yet, in Sub-Saharan Africa, peri-urban areas display unique characteristics: inadequate infrastructure, unplanned development, weak governance, and environmental degradation, all of which exacerbate flood impact and thus need academic attention. This study contributes to filling this gap by assessing the flood vulnerability of roads in peri-urban Accra and its implications for mobility. Based on the fieldwork, the study delineated and analysed potential zones within the research locations. The researchers calculated roads' absolute and relative lengths, using a spatial overlay (intersection) of potentially flooded roads with the total road network within the grid cells of 500 m by 500 m. These measures were adopted and used as exposure measures. The findings revealed that over 80% of roads with lengths between 100 m and 500 m were exposed to floods. Some areas had higher exposure indices, with absolute road lengths ranging from 1.5 km to 3.2 km and relative road lengths between 0.8 and 1.0. There were significant variations in road exposure between and within neighbourhoods. Depending on the depth and duration of the floodwater, residents may be unable to access their homes or carry out their daily activities. In conclusion, this study highlights the differential vulnerability of peri-urban areas to road flooding and recommends targeted provision of flood-resilient infrastructure to promote sustainable development.

Abstract:Flood occurs as a result of rising global temperatures, more precipitation, increased runoff, and an increase in the rate of urban flooding. The goal of this research is to calculate the flood risk assessment of a selected urban catchment in the Nigerian metropolis of Uyo. Secondary data were obtained from Landsat images of the study area using a correlational research design. Using supervised categorization of landuse in the area, the watershed pattern, landuse/landcover, and inundation level were determined using the area's Digital Elevation Model. The study also used a GIS-assisted computer simulation of storm water created by enhanced DEM to assess storm water level and inundation as a function of landuse/landcover change. Storm water generation assessment, inundation modeling, assessment of land cover and level of inundation, and evaluation of flash flood susceptibility using modeled inundation were among the hydrological models and techniques used to analyze the data. The findings revealed that Uyo has a number of streams with varying flow lengths. Uyo has 21 sub-basins, according to the study. In uyo, the total runoff was greater (0.74) inches. In Uyo, the rate of change in catchment behavior, such as catchment precipitation, node flooding, and runoff, increased with the time of day, whereas the rate of change in runoff volume varied somewhat. The hydrograph was not wider because the sections of Uyo metropolitan that were prone to moderate and high floods were higher (78.03 percent ). Based on these findings, the study suggests that better city design is needed to control the impact of flooding in the study area. To prevent the loss of life and property, areas prone to moderate and high flood vulnerability should be closely monitored and secured.

Abstract:In recent years, Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) have become instrumental in restoring ecosystems and reducing the negative effects of hard surface developments. Existing studies have shown the potential of NBS in mitigating urban floods and reducing overall hydrogeological risks, especially in high-income areas. However, there is limited knowledge on area-specific NBS implementation and the locational suitability of areas to support different NBS for urban flood mitigation in medium to low-income regions. A methodology based on Spatial Multi-Criteria Analysis (SMCA) has the potential to spatially combine and synthesize information to elicit spatially-specific opportunities for NBS implementation. However, an SMCA tool to determine suitable locations for different NBS measures for urban flood mitigation does not yet exist. In order to address this research gap, this study developed an SMCA methodology to identify different target areas where specific urban flood-related NBS measures can be implemented to minimize urban flood occurrence in Accra, Ghana. The study revealed different locations where urban flood-related NBS measures could be applied. It also demonstrated how specific NBS measures could be tailored to the characteristics of different areas in Accra to ensure effective urban flood mitigation. The suggested methodological approach provides a spatial knowledge base for flood management institutions to integrate NBS into flood management schemes. The approach has application potential for other geographic contexts facing urban flood risks. Future research could focus on possible ways of integrating NBS into the spatial development of cities.

Dam-mediated flooding impact on outpatient attendance and diarrhoea cases in northern Ghana: a mixed methods study

Abstract:Background: Floods are the most frequently occurring natural disaster and constitute a significant public health risk. Several operational satellite-based flood detection systems quantify flooding extent, but it is unclear how far the choice of satellite-based flood product affects the findings of epidemiological studies of associated public health risks. Few studies of flooding's health impacts have used mixed methods to enrich understanding of these impacts. This study therefore aims to evaluate the relationship between two satellite-derived flood products with outpatient attendance and diarrhoeal disease in northern Ghana, identifying plausible reasons for observed relationships via qualitative interviews. Methods: A convergent parallel mixed methods design combined an ecological time series with focus group discussions and key informant interviews. Through an ecological time series component, monthly outpatient attendance and diarrhoea case counts from health facilities in two flood-prone districts for 2016-2020 were integrated with monthly flooding map layers classified via the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) and Landsat satellite sensors. The relationship between reported diarrhoea and outpatient attendance with flooding was examined using Poisson regression, controlling for seasonality and facility catchment population. Four focus group discussions with affected community members and four key informant interviews with health professionals explored flooding's impact on healthcare delivery and access. Results: Flooding detected via Landsat better predicted outpatient attendance and diarrhoea than flooding via MODIS. Outpatient attendance significantly reduced as LandSat-derived flood area per facility catchment increased (adjusted Incidence Rate Ratio = 0.78, 95% CI: 0.61-0.99, p < 0.05), whilst reported diarrhoea significantly increased with flood area per facility catchment (adjusted Incidence Rate Ratio = 4.27, 95% CI: 2.74-6.63, p < 0.001). Key informants noted how flooding affected access to health services as patients and health professionals could not reach the health facility and emergency referrals were unable to travel. Conclusions: The significant reduction in outpatient attendance during flooding suggests that flooding impairs healthcare delivery. The relationship is sensitive to the choice of satellite-derived flood product, so future studies should consider integrating multiple sources of satellite imagery for more robust exposure assessment. Health teams and communities should plan spatially targeted flood mitigation and health system adaptation strategies that explicitly address population and workforce mobility issues.

Abstract:This study presents a flood modelling approach aimed at enhancing planning strategies to mitigate flooding impacts in LusakaCity. By integrating factors such as slope, hydrostatic potential surface, and the built environment, a predictive flood modelwas developed. The methodology involved using Geographic Information System (GIS) techniques and digital elevationmodels (DEMs) to assess geological features and manmade structures. Precipitation patterns and water demand analysesaided in computing a hydrostatic potential surface through watershed delineation. The generated flood model producedcomprehensive flood maps illustrating water drainage in Lusaka, identifying vulnerable areas using Multi-Criteria DecisionAnalysis (MCDA) techniques. Results highlight the complex interaction between geographical features and humaninfrastructure in flood dynamics. This study contributes to informing zoning policies and disaster response planning, aimingto reduce the impact of future flooding events.

Abstract:Flood disasters are frequent natural disasters that occur annually during the monsoon season and significantly impact urban areas. This area is characterized by impermeable concrete surfaces, which increase runoff and are particularly susceptible to flooding. Therefore, this study aims to adopt Bi-variate statistical methods such as frequency ratio (FR) and weight of evidence (WOE) to map flood susceptibility in an urbanized watershed. The study area encompasses an urbanized watershed surrounding the Chennai Metropolitan area in southern India. The essential parameters considered for flood susceptibility zonation include geomorphology, soil, land use/land cover (LU/LC), rainfall, drainage, slope, aspect, Topographic Wetness Index (TWI), and Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI). The flood susceptibility map was derived using 70% of randomly selected flood areas from the flood inventory database, and the other 30% was used for validation using the area under curve (AUC) method. The AUC method produced a frequency ratio of 0.806 and a weight of evidence value of 0.865 contributing to the zonation of the three classes. The study further investigates the impact of urbanization on flood susceptibility and is further classified into high, moderate, and low flood risk zones. With the abrupt change in climatic scenarios, there is an increase in the risk of flash floods. The results of this study can be used by policymakers and planners in developing a preparedness system to mitigate economic, human, and property losses due to floods in any urbanized watershed.

Abstract:Flooding is a major environmental problem facing Anambra State of Nigeria, which also threatens food security in the state. To address this issue, continual flood vulnerability mapping exploring more efficient methods is needed to facilitate flood risk management in the state. The advantages of employing spatial information technologies such as Remote Sensing (RS) and Geographic Information System (GIS) in flood vulnerability mapping has been widely documented; the limitations of employing GIS alone in effective vulnerability analysis have also been documented by researchers. To overcome these limitations, this study adopted the use of GIS and the integration of Interval Value Fuzzy Rough Number (IVFRN), Decision Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory (DEMATEL), and Analytical Network Process (ANP) method in vulnerability assessment of flood hazard. The result of the study shows that the state is very vulnerable to flood with 73% of the total area of the state lying between Very High and Medium vulnerable zones. The most vulnerable Local Government Area (LGA) in the State is Anambra West with 95% of the total area of the LGA lying between Very High and Medium vulnerable zones. Furthermore, the obtained values of R ˜ - D ˜ show that Rainfall Intensity factor is the major cause of flood in the study area with the highest positive value of 1.55 and Soil factor is the major effect with the highest negative value of -0.93. The IVFRN-DEMATEL-ANP assessment model was validated using AUC-ROC method; an AUC value of 0.946 was obtained, this indicates that the model has excellent prediction accuracy. This study was able to establish the feasibility of integrating the IVFRN, DEMATEL and ANP methods in flood vulnerability assessment. It is recommended that the provision of adequate drainage systems should be prioritized to areas of high flood vulnerability index; to help mitigate flood hazards in the State. Also, strategic planning of infrastructures and emergency routes for moving people and key assets from vulnerable areas especially during the rainy season should be geospatial-based and systematic.

Abstract:Chennai, the capital city of Tamil Nadu in India, has experienced several instances of severe flooding over the past two decades, primarily attributed to persistent heavy rainfall. Accurate mapping of flood-prone regions in the basin is crucial for the comprehensive flood risk management. This study used the GIS-MCDA model, a multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA) model that incorporated geographic information system (GIS) technology to support decision making processes. Remote sensing, GIS, and analytical hierarchy technique (AHP) were used to identify flood-prone zones and to determine the weights of various factors affecting flood risk, such as rainfall, distance to river, elevation, slope, land use/land cover, drainage density, soil type, and lithology. Four groups (zones) were identified by the flood susceptibility map including high, medium, low, and very low. These zones occupied 16.41%, 67.33%, 16.18%, and 0.08% of the area, respectively. Historical flood events in the study area coincided with the flood risk classification and flood vulnerability map. Regions situated close to rivers, characterized by low elevation, slope, and high runoff density were found to be more susceptible to flooding. The flood susceptibility map generated by the GIS-MCDA accurately described the flood-prone regions in the study area.

Abstract:The rapid urbanization and changing climate patterns in Swat, Pakistan have increased the vulnerability of urban areas to flood events. Accurate assessment of flood risk is crucial for effective urban planning and disaster management. In current research study flood hazard index was developed using analytic hierarchy process (AHP) technique in combination with the geographical information system (GIS) environment in Swat, Pakistan. The study integrates various data sources, including topographic maps, land use/land cover information, rainfall data, and infrastructure data, to develop a comprehensive flood risk assessment model. The weights obtained from the AHP analysis are combined with geospatial data using a geographic information system (GIS) to generate flood risk maps. The flood hazard levels were categorized into five distinct classes: very low, low, moderate, high, and very high. Using the GIS-AHP approach, higher weights were assigned to rainfall, distance to river, elevation, and slope in comparison to NDVI, TWI, LULC, curvature, and soil type. The flood hazard map was then reclassified for each parameter. By overlaying these maps, it was determined that 5.6% of the total area is classified as very high flood risk, 52% as high risk, 39.3% as moderate risk, and 3.1% as low risk. The developed comprehensive flood risk assessment model in current study can identify high-risk areas, prioritize mitigation measures, and aid in effective urban planning and disaster management.

Abstract:The objective of this study is to assess and map flood hazard zones in Ilorin (North-Central, Nigeria). Flood susceptibility zones were identified by utilizing the multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA) technique integrated with Geographic Information System (GIS). Eight factors considered the most influential variables for runoff accumulation and stagnation in the city during excess rainfall and surface water runoff were taken into account. These factors include elevation, slope, topographic wetness index, convergence index, drainage density, altitude above channel, land use, and rainfall. To obtain the weights of each factor, the Analytical Hierarchical Process (AHP) was applied. The final flood hazard assessment and mapping were done using the Weighted Overlay operation. Essential findings of this study reveal that a critical percentage of the area (38.4%, corresponding to 127.01 km2) has a high flood risk. About 20.5% (67.85 km2) area shows moderate flood risk, while approximately 35.6% (117.77 km2) and 4.2% (13.98 km2) areas are identified as low and very low flood risk areas, respectively. The high flood risk zones need immediate attention because they are mostly found in the densely populated low-lying gentle slope (< 5o) areas. Accuracy assessment of the flood-hazard map indicates a considerable high value (87.5%). A combination of flood susceptibility and vulnerability has shown that about 35% of the metropolitan area is under the threat of high flood risk. The result of this study may be useful for the residents of the city, decision-makers, and urban planners for sustainable flood disaster planning and management in Ilorin.

Abstract:The study offered the opportunity for an evaluation of the role of Remote Sensing and Geospatial techniques in flood disaster risk management and development of spatial decision support system for flood risk assessment and management in Abeokuta metropolis. Datasets used includes cloud free high resolution satellite images and Shuttle Radar Topographic Mission (SRTM) data downloaded from earth explorer site. Soil data used was obtained from Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO’s) Harmonised World Soil Database, while rainfall data was obtained from the Climate Hazards Group InfraRed Precipitation Station. Maps of flood enhancing factors namely: soil types, rainfall intensity, drainage density and topography were created in Geographic Information Systems using same scale of 1: 50,000 and Geographic coordinate system (WGS 1984). All maps were produced in raster format with the same cell grid cell size of 0.0028 mm. They were then subjected to weighting by ranking and Multi-Criteria Analysis (MCA) using the Weighted Linear Combination. The study identified topography and land use as key factors contributing to flooding within Abeokuta metropolis. Obstruction of natural drainage channels by buildings aggravates disasters from flash flood events.
Moving beyond the ad hoc responses in flood management to a localization approach in Ghana

Abstract:Flooding has become one form of disaster that has become both a national and global concern. In Ghana, flooding has become a yearly ritual, displacing many community members, destroying farmlands, and cutting off communities. The state institution mandated to coordinate and manage disasters is the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO). However, NADMO is always overwhelmed with the level of humanitarian assistance required by flood victims annually due to limited resources. Floods management in Ghana is largely reactionary and short-term, hence the need for long-term planning. The researchers therefore used both secondary and primary data to investigate the drivers and gaps in the existing flood management approaches. The findings showed that inadequate funding, non-enforcement of settlement and farming laws; unhealthy environmental practices and low investments in flood containment infrastructure were the drivers of the perennial floods in Ghana. The major gap identified was the over reliance on central government and development partners to finance flood preparedness, response and recovery interventions. These funding sources have always been inadequate and irregular. The study concluded with a recommendation to NADMO and other state agencies to adopt a long-term, holistic and locally driven approach to flood management in Ghana.
The Mfoundi Watershed at Yaoundé in the Humid Tropical Zone of Cameroon: A Case Study of Urban Flood Susceptibility Mapping

Abstract:Most of the world’s major cities currently face the risk of flooding, which is becoming more frequent. Floods often leave behind enormous material damage and, worse still, loss of human life. With this in mind, this paper proposes a conceptual approach to modeling flood risk-sensitive areas in the Mfoundi watershed (95.6 km2) that drains Yaoundé town, the political capital located in the humid tropical zone of the southern plateau of Cameroon. The multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA) approach coupled with the analytical hierarchy process (AHP) and the geographical information system (GIS) environment was employed in this study. The method was applied to ten parameters to calculate the flood risk index and hence to generate the flood susceptibility map. The results show five main classes of susceptibility to flooding: very low (9.27 km2), low (24.63 km2), moderate (22.04 km2), high (21.01 km2) and very high (19.50 km2). Two methods were adopted to validate the flood susceptibility map, which was produced by overlaying 50 regularly flooded points identified in the Mfoundi watershed. The so-called visual method shows that 36 of these points (72%) are found in environments with very high susceptibility and 11 points (22%) are located in areas with high susceptibility, proving that the results reflect reality. The presence of flood points in areas of low and moderate susceptibility could be linked to both human activities and climatic disruption, which sometimes triggers high rainfall. The statistical method (AUC) presents a very good accuracy (0.84 or 84%) of the map produced. This study is important for several reasons: (1) it is carried out in an area with potential for environmental accidents but where very few studies were carried out to delineate these hazards; (2) it provides a basic tool for making decisions about environmental issues for more efficient management of the Mfoundi Watershed; (3) it is also an experimental study representative of the humid tropical forest zone subject to forcings that should be extended to larger scales by covering several climate units in Cameroon.
Multi-criteria decision approach to identify flood vulnerability zones using geospatial technology in the Kemp-Welch Catchment, Central Province, Papua New Guinea

Abstract:Flood is a natural part of the hydrologic cycle, a natural phenomenon known for its catastrophic impacts on the environment, livelihoods, and properties, both economically and socially. It is the leading natural disaster in the world today affecting so many people, especially in the Asia region. Papua New Guinea has an abundance of rich resources and still possesses most of its natural geographic habitats and environments, but is also familiar with natural disasters like floods, earthquakes, landslides, volcanic eruptions, and droughts. Floods bring about tremendous destructions to anything that lies in its path, but it restores the health of the waterways/channels and redistributes the fertile sediments onto the floodplain. This research paper is focused on flood risk analysis using GIS and remote sensing, multi-criteria decision approach (MCDA), analytical hierarchy process (AHP), and the weighted linear combination (WLC). GIS-based spatial analysis techniques are useful for flood risk and hazard mapping with remote sensing technologies which provides an alternative to the conventional/traditional survey techniques. GIS coupled with remote sensing provides a basic framework/platform that helps in all stages of disaster assessment and management from preparedness, to response and recovery. Multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA) is a collection of techniques that aid decision-makers in properly structuring multi-faceted decisions and evaluating the alternatives. AHP is a tool under MCDA that is used for dealing with complex decision-making and helps decision-makers set priorities and draw better decisions. Altogether, GIS-based MCDA-AHP became an efficient technique in flood risk mapping where multiple flood influential factors/criteria are incorporated into the GIS analysis process to producing better flood risk maps. In the present study, nine independent variables, namely elevation, slope, soil texture, soil drainage, landform, rainfall, distance from the main river, land use/land cover, and surface runoff, are used for flood vulnerability analysis. The resulted output demonstrated a span of value ranging from 1.13 (least vulnerable) to 4.15 (most vulnerable). The final map with 5 distinct classes is developed based on the natural junk classification method. The result indicated that about 4.57% of land area as "very high" and 12.49% as "high" flood vulnerable class and a total of 6700 people are living in those vulnerable zones. Past flood events are compared with the flood vulnerable database to validate the modeled output in the present study. This type of study will be very useful to the local government for future planning and decision on flood mitigation plans.
Exploring a GIS-based analytic hierarchy process for spatial flood risk assessment in Egypt: a case study of the Damietta branch

Abstract:Floods are the most common and costly disasters worldwide, while spatial flood risk assessment is still challenging due to fewer observations and method limitations. In this study, the flood risk zonation in the Nile districts of the Damietta branch, Egypt, is delineated and assessed by integrating remote sensing with a geographic information system, and an analytical hierarchy process (AHP). Twelve thematic layers (elevation, slope, normalized difference vegetation index, topographic wetness index, modified normalized difference water index, topographic positioning index, stream power index, modified Fournier index, drainage density, distance to the river, sediment transport index, and lithology) are used for producing flood susceptibility zonation (FSZ) and six parameters (total population, distance to hospital, land use/land cover, population density, road density, and distance to road) are utilized for producing flood vulnerability zonation. Multicollinearity analysis is applied to identify highly correlated independent variables. Sensitivity studies have been used to assess the effectiveness of the AHP model. The results indicate that the high and very high flood risk classes cover 21.40% and 8.26% of the area, respectively. In 14.07%, 27.01%, and 29.26% of the research area, respectively, flood risk zones classified as very low, low, and moderate are found. Finally, FSZ is validated using the receiver operating characteristics curve and area under curve (AUC) analysis. A higher AUC value (0.741) in the validation findings demonstrated the validity of this AHP approach. The results of this study will help planners, hydrologists, and managers of water resources manage areas that are susceptible to flooding and reduce potential harm.

Abstract:Urban resilience experts have highlighted that frequent extreme weather events are a result of rapid, unplanned development and climate change. To ensure coherent urban planning, effective land governance has been a priority since the introduction of the national urban policy in 2012. However, despite implementing this policy for over a decade, poor land governance continues to negatively impact city development, yet this subject has received limited academic attention. Our study focuses on Santa Maria, a community historically neglected by planning officials and currently facing unregulated urbanization and increasing flood risks. We used qualitative research methods, including key informant interviews and document reviews, to unpack land ownership and management complexities. These complexities have led to "planning by the commons," the creation of green space deserts, and challenges related to residents' mobility and livelihood. Our study affirms that auto-constructed communities like Santa Maria reflect a form of tenacious urbanism that should be acknowledged and respected. Incorporating its logic into proposals for consolidation, informed by the opinions and desires of the residents themselves, can help integrate "planning by the commons" into the urban planning process of Accra. Rather than being viewed as a problem to be cured, this approach should be incorporated into the planning process, incorporating locally specific social functions and traditional structures to ensure equitable and just urban societies. The public sector must recognize that building on local capacity, skills, and expertise is essential in the quest for a resilient city. The experience from Santa Maria provides a great opportunity to nurture local development, fulfill the growing demand for solutions and services without biases, and provide an excellent opportunity for inclusive growth.

Abstract:This research aimed to evaluate flood hazards and risk areas in the Gidabo Watershed using remote sensing (RS), Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and analytical hierarchy process (AHP). Six main factors were considered to identify flooding hazard zones: drainage density (DD), soil, elevation, rainfall, slope, and land use land cover (LULC). Population density, flood hazard zone, and LULC were considered for mapping the flood risk zone in the Gidabo watershed. A weighted overlay analysis tool has been utilized to integrate the thematic layers to identify both flood hazard and flood risk zones. The findings indicated that about 41.6% (337 km 2 ) of the watershed falls within the high and very high flooding hazard zones. Conversely, 31.11% (252 km 2 ) of the watershed is categorized under very-low and low flooding hazards. Moreover, the study identified five flood risk zones in the area viz; very high, high, moderate, low, and very low. The result of the flood risk map revealed that 199.5 km 2 (24.5%) of the watershed has a higher and very higher risk of flooding. These zones were validated using the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve, showing a correlation coefficient of 0.943. These results emphasize the need to implement prediction of floods, early warning systems, and effective management practices on a regular and sustainable basis.
