Abstract:A novel indicator film incorporating roselle anthocyanin extracts (RAE) was prepared to monitor shrimp freshness. Hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) modified polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) was applied as film-forming substrates to obtain better functions. Structural characterization results suggested compositions were well dispersed and confirmed the structural modification. The addition of HPMC would improve film functions through generation of new interactions. The films with a ratio (HPMC-to-PVA) of 3:1 exhibited stronger tensile strength (91.88 ± 0.13 MPa), hydrophobic (moisture content of 10.44 ± 0.65%, water contact angle of 56.40 ± 3.11°), barrier properties and larger color variations in response to pH changes, demonstrating positive influences of physical functions on indication properties. Thus, a relationship among structural, physical and indication functions was proposed. Furthermore, the films were applied for shrimp freshness real-time monitoring. The film color changed from rose-red to light green at 4 d, corresponding to the onset of spoilage, and then turned into yellow at 8 d, when the shrimp was severely spoilage. The strong correlation between total color difference and chemical spoilage indexes (P < .05) was observed. Therefore, the incorporation of HPMC could improve film functional characteristics by structural modification of new interaction formation, and the PVA/HPMC/RAE films could be applied as intelligent packaging for real-time shrimp freshness monitoring.

Abstract:In this study, halochromic smart films were produced, characterized, and applied to monitor the freshness of hairtail and shrimp in real-time. Red cabbage anthocyanins (RCAs) solution illustrated significant color variations (red-pink-blue-green) in different pH environments. RCAs were successfully immobilized into chitosan (CS)/oxidized-chitin nanocrystals (OCN) composites through hydrogen bonding, and cohesive film structures were formed. When the proper concentration of RCAs was incorporated into the composites, improved water vapor permeability (WVP), oxygen permeability (OP), mechanical, UV-blocking, and antioxidant properties were observed. Moreover, the smart films exhibited distinguishable changes of color to ammonia vapor and acidic/alkaline environment within short time intervals, which were easy to discern by naked eyes. Finally, the smart films were applied to monitor the freshness of hairtail (Trichiurus lepturus) and shrimp (Penaeus vannamei). The film color changed significantly during storage time, and three stages of product freshness (fresh, medium fresh, and spoiled) were successfully differentiated. Strong correlations among three freshness indicators and two colorimetric parameters were also identified and analyzed. Overall, the smart system assembled from non-toxic and biodegradable components could contribute to monitoring the freshness of seafood, like hairtail and shrimp, in real-time.

Abstract:A novel stable PVA/HPMC/roselle anthocyanin (RAE) indicator film co-pigmented with oxalic acid (OA) was prepared, its properties, application effects and stability enhancement mechanism were investigated correspondingly. The structural characterization revealed that more stable network was formed due to the co-pigmentation facilitated generation of molecular interactions. Meanwhile, the co-pigmentation improved film mechanical and hydrophobic properties compared to both PVA/HPMC/RAE newly prepared (PHRN) or stored (PHRS) film, expressing as higher tensile strength values (12.25% and 14.44% higher than PHRN and PHRS), lower water solubility (7.22% and 10.09% lower than PHRN and PHRS) and water vapor permeability values (33.20% and 21.05% lower than PHRN and PHRS) of PVA/HPMC/RAE/OA newly prepared (PHON) or stored (PHOS) film. Compared with the PHRS film, the PHOS film still presented more distinguishable color variations when being applied to monitor shrimp freshness, owing to the stabilization behaviors of co-pigmentation in anthocyanin conformation. Hence, the co-pigmentation was an effective strategy to enhance film stability, physical and pH-responsive properties after long term storage, leading to better film monitoring effects when applied in real-time freshness monitoring.

Abstract:The novel colorimetric film was designed to monitor the aldehyde emission from kiwi fruit based on ethyl cellulose/polyvinyl alcohol (EC/PVA) incorporated with poly (ethylene glycol) bis(3-aminopropyl) terminated (amine-PEG) and methyl red. The different colors of aldehyde-sensitive films were caused by a change in alkalinity, which was caused by nucleophilic addition reaction between aldehydes and amine-terminated polymers. The structure and basic properties (thermal stability, mechanical properties, hydrophobicity and barrier property) of the film were studied, as well as the colorimetric response of the film to aldehyde and its application in detecting of kiwi fruit freshness. Low incorporation of amine-PEG (no more than 2%) can improve the thermal stability and water vapor barrier of the films. When amine-PEG content was 2%, amine-PEG can be well distributed in the EC/PVA matrix by interaction of hydrogen bonding. As the kiwifruit ripened, the color of films changed from yellow to orange, and finally to red. The trends of color change in colorimetric film was similar with the changes of kiwi fruit freshness parameters, including sensory tests, TSS, hardness, weight loss rate, titratable acidity, ascorbic acid content and MDA. Therefore, the films can be used to real-time monitor the freshness of kiwi fruit during shelf life.

Abstract:Mortality ascertainment was extended through 1990 for a cohort of 1271 workers involved in the production of cellulose triacetate fiber at a plant in Rock Hill, South Carolina. Each subject was employed for at least three months between 1 January 1954 and 1 January 1977 in jobs that entailed exposure to the highest concentrations of methylene chloride. Median exposures in 1977 ranged from 140 to 745 ppm (8-h time-weighted average). The observed numbers of deaths from specific causes were compared with the expected numbers of deaths computed from rates in York County, South Carolina. For most causes of death, there was little if any association with employment. Among causes of particular interest, no new deaths were observed from cancer of the liver and biliary tract, although the excess from the earlier study persisted (4 observed, 1.34 expected). No excess mortality was observed for cancer of the pancreas (2 observed, 2.42 expected) or for ischemic heart disease (43 observed, 47.8 expected).

Abstract:This study aimed to develop a novel pH-sensing biopolymer film based on red cabbage puree (RCP) incorporated with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), which was utilized for monitoring fish freshness during storage at 25 °C. A homogenized RCP suspension with a mean particle size of 12.86 ± 0.03 μm and a total anthocyanin concentration of 292.17 ± 2.65 mg/L was directly used as a film-forming substance and anthocyanin source to blend with PVA, showing visual changes in color and ultraviolet-visible spectra within a pH of 2–12. Rheological and microstructural studies certified the strong interactions and good compatibility between the RCP and PVA, resulting in better mechanical properties and water resistance of the composite film than those of a pure RCP film, but without affecting its pH sensitivity. When used for fish freshness monitoring at 25 °C, the developed RCP/PVA film presented visible color differences from purple to yellow, which corresponded to the spoilage threshold of the total volatile basic nitrogen and the total viable count in fish samples. The study highlights that anthocyanin-rich purees of fruits and vegetables, in this case red cabbage puree, can be fully utilized to develop eco-friendly pH-sensing indicator films for intelligent food packaging.

Abstract:Food freshness monitoring is vital to ensure food safety. Recently, packaging materials incorporating pH-sensitive films have been employed to monitor the freshness of food products in real time. The film-forming matrix of the pH-sensitive film is essential to maintain the desired physicochemical functions of the packaging. Conventional film-forming matrices, such as polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), have drawbacks of low water resistance, poor mechanical properties, and weak antioxidant ability. In this study, we successfully synthesise PVA/riclin (P/R) biodegradable polymer films to overcome these limitations. The films feature riclin, an agrobacterium -derived exopolysaccharide. The uniformly dispersed riclin conferred outstanding antioxidant activity to the PVA film and significantly improved its tensile strength and barrier properties by forming hydrogen bonds. Purple sweet potato anthocyanin (PSPA) was used as a pH indicator. The intelligent film with added PSPA provided robust surveillance of volatile ammonia and changed its color within 30 s in the pH range of 2–12. This multifunctional colorimetric film also engendered discernible color changes when the quality of shrimp deteriorated, demonstrating its great potential as an intelligent packaging material to monitor food freshness.

Abstract:Naturally sourced pH-sensitive indicator films are of interest for real-time monitoring of food freshness through color changes because of their safety. Therefore, natural pigments for indicator films are required. However, pigment stability is affected by environmental factors, which can in turn affect the sensitivity and color stability of the pH-sensitive indicator film. First, natural pigments (anthocyanin, betalain, curcumin, alizarin, and shikonin) commonly used in pH-sensitive indicator films are presented. Subsequently, the mechanisms behind the change in pigment color under different pH environments and their applications in monitoring food freshness are also described. Third, influence factors, such as the sources, types, and pH sensitivity of pigments, as well as environmental parameters (light, temperature, humidity, and oxygen) of sensitivity and color stability, are analyzed. Finally, methods for improving the pH-sensitive indicator film are explored, encapsulation of natural pigments, incorporation of a hydrophobic film-forming matrix or function material, and protective layer have been shown to enhance the color stability of indicator films, the addition of copigments or mental ions, blending of different natural pigments, and the utilization of electrospinning have been proved to increase the color sensitivity of indicator films. This review could provide theoretical support for the development of naturally sourced pH-sensitive indicator films with high stability and sensitivity and facilitate the development in the field of monitoring food freshness.

Abstract:An antioxidative and pH-sensitive multifunctional film, incorporating anthocyanin-rich purple sweet potato extract (PPE) was fabricated from polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and sodium alginate (SA)/sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC-Na). The film was composed of 6:4 PVA:SA/CMC-Na (mass ratio, SA:CMC-Na at 1:1) with added PPE, and changed color with changes in pH, and also had useful UV-blocking, antioxidant, mechanical, and water vapor barrier properties, which enable its use as a food coating film. In addition, the incorporation of 300 mg PPE increased the biodegradability of the film in soil from 52.47 ± 1.12% to 64.29 ± 1.75% at 17 days. The pH sensitivity of the film enabled its successful use for the evaluation of pork freshness. Cherries coated with the film had an extended shelf life from 3–4 to 7–9 days, during storage at 25 °C. Consequently, the multifunctional film can be applied to packaging for real-time pH/freshness monitoring and for effectively preserving the freshness of meat and fruit.

The Use of Novel Colorimetric Films to Monitor the Freshness of Pork, Utilizing Konjac Glucomannan With Curcumin/Alizarin

Abstract:In this study, different proportions of curcumin (CUR) and alizarin (ALI) were added to konjac glucomannan (KG)/ polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) to prepare an active intelligent packaging film and evaluate its potential to indicate pork freshness. The mixed indicator had a richer color hierarchy in the buffer solution with pH = 2-12. The surface of the KG-2C2A and KG-1C3A films is smoother and has fewer cross-section faults. With the increase of CUR content in the film, the crystal structure becomes more prominent, leading to poor compatibility with KG. The WAC of KG-3C1A and KG-1C3A films was significantly higher than that of the other groups, and they had better hydrophobicity. With the increase of CUR content in the films, the thermal stability of the films was enhanced, and the KG-C films showed the highest thermal stability. Among them, the KG-2A2C and KG-1C3A films showed the most significant color change during pork spoiling and could be used to monitor the freshness of pork. As a pH colorimetric indicator, CUR and ALI-coated KG films might be of great potential in fresh meat monitoring.

Abstract:The development of intelligent indicator film that can detect changes in food quality is a new trend in the food packaging field. The WPNFs-PU-ACN/Gly film was prepared based on whey protein isolate nanofibers (WPNFs). Anthocyanin (ACN) and glycerol (Gly) were used as the color indicator and the plasticizer, respectively, while pullulan (PU) was added to enhance mechanical properties of WPNFs-PU-ACN/Gly edible film. In the study, the addition of ACN improved the hydrophobicity and oxidation resistance of the indicator film; with an increase in pH, the color of the indicator film shifted from dark pink to grey, and its surface was uniform and smooth. Therefore, the WPNFs-PU-ACN/Gly edible film would be suitable for sensing the pH of salmon, which changes with deterioration, as the color change of ACN was completely consistent with fish pH. Furthermore, the color change after being exposed to grey was evaluated in conjunction with hardness, chewiness, and resilience of salmon as an indication. This shows that intelligent indicator film made of WPNFs, PU, ACN, and Gly could contribute to the development of safe food.

Abstract:In this study, the novel packaging films were fabricated by immobilizing Kyoho skin extract within starch/PVA composite film. The smart film displayed distinguishable changes of color in pH solution (1–13). The DPPH radical scavenging rate was 80.1%. Therefore, the films had the potential application for monitoring food freshness. In this study, the optimal ratio of starch and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) was successfully selected by response surface method. The novel packaging films were fabricated by immobilizing Kyoho skin extract (KSE) within starch/PVA composite film by the casting method. The mechanical property, PH sensitivity, and other properties of films with different KSE content (1–5 mL) were studied. The starch/PVA film with 3 mL KSE (SPK3.0 film) showed more uniform structure than the starch/PVA film in microscope. At the same time, the film has strong mechanical properties and low water barrier capacity. Infrared analysis of the film further revealed hydrogen bond interaction between film matrix and KSE. The smart packaging film displayed distinguishable changes of color from purple to green in pH (1–13). Furthermore, the smart films possessed excellent antioxidant. Therefore, the SPK films had the potential application potential in the field of packaging. Highlights Barrier properties and antioxidant activity were enhanced significantly by the addition of KSE. The film components are connected by hydrogen bonds so that they have good compatibility. The functional film shows different colors in the range of pH 1–13.

Abstract:A highly distinguishable indicator film was developed based on sodium carboxymethyl starch, κ-carrageenan, carboxylated cellulose nanocrystals and mulberry pomace particles (MPPs). As the content of MPPs increased from 0 % to 6 %, the tensile strength decreased from 11.71 MPa to 5.20 MPa, the elongation at break increased from 26.84 % to 43.76 %, respectively, and the haze increased from 34.12 % to 52.10 %. The films accurately exhibit a color change from purple to blue-green under alkaline conditions. The enhanced haze improved the visible resolution of the films during the color-changing process. The films with the size of 7.50 mm × 7.50 mm and 10.0 mm × 10.0 mm exhibited obvious color changes when the total volatile basic nitrogen reached 14.60 mg/100 g and 19.04 mg/100 g, respectively, which accurately indicated the quality of pork and fish. This study will offer a simplified path to improve both accurate sensitivity and distinguishability for smart films.

Abstract:In food packaging, smart indicator films based on natural resources have greatly attracted researchers to minimize the environmental issues as well as to satisfy consumer preferences for food safety. In this research, pH-sensitive films were prepared using purple-fleshed sweet potato starch (SPS) and sweet potato peel (SPP). Two categories of the film (i) SPS and (ii) SPS/SPP, were fabricated via solvent casting technique, incorporating different concentrations of commercial purple sweet potato anthocyanin (CA) at 0%, 1%, 1.5%, and 2% (w/v) and the physicochemical, mechanical, thermal, and morphological properties of the films were investigated. The thickness, water solubility, and swelling degree of the films increased with the increment of CA, whereas there were no significant changes in the water content (WC) of the films. Water vapor permeability (WVP) was decreased for SPS films while statistically similar for SPS/SPP films. The addition of CA reduced the tensile strength (TS) and tensile modulus (TM) yet increased the elongation at break (EaB) of the films as compared to films without CA. The FTIR results confirmed the immobilization of anthocyanin into the film. In SEM images, roughness in the surfaces of the CA-associated films was observed. A reduction of thermal stability was found for the films with anthocyanin except for the SPS/SPP CA 2% film. Furthermore, the CA-associated films showed a remarkable color response when subjected to pH buffers (pH 1 to 12) and successfully monitored chicken freshness. The fastest color migration was observed in acidic conditions when the films were immersed into aqueous, acidic, low fat, and fatty food simulants. The findings of this work demonstrated that the developed pH indicator films have the potential to be implemented as smart packaging to monitor food freshness and quality for safe consumption.

Abstract:Background: Anthocyanin-based pH-sensing films have been widely fabricated for potential application in monitoring food freshness. However, the color fading of anthocyanins limits their application for the food industry due to their low stability. In addition, the color sensitivity and pH indicator ability of anthocyanin-based films currently available are not satisfied and need to be improved. Results: Chitosan/xanthan gum (CX)-based colorimetric films with addition of purple cabbage anthocyanin (PAN) and different amounts of rosmarinic acid (RA) were fabricated. RA copigmentation in chitosan/xanthan gum-purple cabbage anthocyanin-rosmarinic acid (CX-P-RA) films significantly improved the stability and pH response sensitivity of PAN, and the combined copigmentation of RA and xanthan gum exhibited an additive effect. The addition of RA significantly improved the tensile strength and elongation at break, thermal stability, antioxidant and antibacterial activities of CX-P-RA films. Moreover, addition of RA enhanced the pH sensitivity and colorimetry of CX-P-RA films, which exhibited a good response to different pH values. CX-P-RA2 film was tested to monitor the freshness of pork. It showed visible color changes during the storage of pork. In addition, the ∆E of CX-P-RA2 film was highly correlated with changes in total volatile basic nitrogen in pork (R2 = 0.951). Conclusion: These results indicated that CX-P-RA2 film can be used as a pH-sensing indicator with good stability and high sensitivity for real-time monitoring of pork freshness. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract:The increase in new technology and consumer demand for healthy and safe food has led to the development of smart packaging to help consumers understand food conditions in real time. The incorporation of red dragon fruit peel anthocyanin into cassava starch and chitosan films was used in this study as a color indicator to monitor food conditions. This indicator film was generated using the solvent-casting method. The mechanical, morphological, and physicochemical characterizations of the film were studied, and food freshness monitoring was carried out. The results showed that adding red dragon fruit peel anthocyanin increased up to 94.44% of the antioxidant activity. It also improved its flexibility, indicated by the lowest tensile strength (3.89 ± 0.15 MPa) and Young's modulus (0.14 ± 0.01 MPa) and the highest elongation at break (27.62 ± 0.57%). The indicator film was sensitive to pH, which was indicated by its color change from red to yellow as pH increased. The color of the film also changed when it was used to test the freshness of packaged shrimp at both room and chiller temperatures. According to the results, the indicator film based on cassava starch–chitosan incorporated with red dragon fruit peel anthocyanin showed its potential as a smart packaging material.

Abstract:Weather radars require long unambiguous ranges, high Nyquist sampling rates and good clutter suppression. In addition, polarization diversity is also used extensively, switching polarization of the transmit pulse on a pulse by pulse basis. This paper presents a dual polarized staggered pulse repetition scheme that can be used for Doppler and polarization diversity measurements in a weather radar. Processing algorithms for radar returns under this scheme are also presented. This pulsing scheme was implemented on the CP-2 radar operated by the National Center for Atmospheric Research. Experimental observations of convective storms using dual polarized staggered pulse repetition scheme in the Colorado front range were made and the results of the data analysis are presented.
