Abstract:A semicrystalline polymer actuator, which is responsive to solvent vapor with fast and large scale locomotion, is described. The thermoset semicrystalline polymer can be easily synthesized from crystallizable polyester segment poly (e-caprolactone) and isophorone diisocyanate trimer. Organic solvent vapor is used to induce the reversible swelling-crystallization conversion of the crystallizable polyester segment, resulting in its expansion/shrinkage. The contraction of the polymer actuator (1 mm thick) needs only approximate to 4 s in room temperature. When exposed to air the polymer actuator can exhibit a fast self-oscillation. Then, a soft crawler based on this polymer is demonstrated. Driven by organic solvent it walks rapidly and steadily. The microscope images show the fast swelling-crystallization conversion that gives rise to reversible shape changes of the polymer.

Abstract:In this study, we analyzed gallium nitride nanotubes which were formed highly oriented on a c-axis perpendicular to substrate surface by using nanoindentation technique. We were focusing experimental observations on the nanomechanical properties. The behavior of the gallium nitride nanotube breakage accompanying with compression test was examined using a nanoindentation system enabling the application of compressive force to the nanotubes homogeneously. The buckling energy of compression for a single gallium nitride nanotube had been measured. The corresponding value of elastic modulus of gallium nitride nanotube was also characterized. Abstract:Polysaccharides offer great potential for developing flexible and sustainable electronics due to their inherent biocompatibility and biodegradability. Among them, chitosan shows promise for biomedical applications, though its electromechanical behavior remains not fully understood. To address this, we prepared chitosan films using two different acidic solutions to promote varied interactions between chitosan chains. A comprehensive characterization of these films was conducted, examining their crystallinity, bond interactions, and microscale electromechanical response through X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM), respectively. Our analysis reveals that the second harmonic PFM response is greater than the first harmonic response in chitosan cast films (30–40 μm thick), suggesting that the dominant electromechanical response is electrostrictive rather than piezoelectric, although electrostatic and charge injection phenomena cannot be entirely ruled out. These findings provide new insights into the mechanisms underlying chitosan's electromechanical behavior, helping to resolve discrepancies in prior studies. This improved understanding opens opportunities to employ chitosan in functional devices, advancing the field of polysaccharide-based flexible electronics with applications in biomedicine and beyond.

Abstract:Bioinspired smart polymeric materials that undergo three-dimensional shape deformation in response to specific stimuli have gained significant attention in the field of soft robotics and intelligent devices. Despite the substantial advancements in soft robotics, there is a growing demand for the design of multistimuli-responsive soft actuators using a single layer of material due to its reduced complexity and ease of manufacturing and durability. Here, we report the actuation characteristics of a single-layer, dual-responsive soft actuator that overcomes the commonly encountered delamination issues often associated with bilayer systems by incorporating PEDOT:PSS with cassava starch. This soft actuator exhibits deformations in response to various solvent vapors, such as water, alcohol, and acetone. Remarkably, it demonstrates opposite deformations upon exposure to water and alcohol vapors. Additionally, the actuator responds to light triggers and folds upon exposure to sunlight and infrared light. The degree of folding can be precisely controlled by adjusting the intensity of the light source. Furthermore, the periodic geometric patterns imposed on the surface of the actuator provide an additional handle to control the bending axis. For proof of concept, we leverage the actuation capabilities of our actuator to showcase a range of potential applications, including its usage in wearable textiles, crawler robots, smart curtains, push-and-pull machines, and smart lifts.
Applicability of Vapor-Deposited Thermoresponsive Hydrogel Thin Films in Ultrafast Humidity Sensors/Actuators

Abstract:Thermoresponsive polymers reversibly react to changes in temperature and water content of their environment (i.e., relative humidity, RH). In the present contribution, the thermoresponsiveness of poly(N-vinylcaprolactam) thin films cross-linked by di(ethylene glycol) divinyl ether deposited by initiated chemical vapor deposition are investigated to assess their applicability to sensor and actuator setups. A lower critical solution temperature (LCST) is observed at around 16 °C in aqueous environment, associated with a dramatic change in film thickness (e.g., 200% increase at low temperatures) and refractive index, while only thermal expansion of the polymeric system is found, when ramping the temperature in dry atmosphere. In humid environment, we observed a significant response occurring in low RH (already below 5% RH), with the moisture swelling the thin film (up to 4%), but mainly replacing air in the polymeric structure up to ∼40% RH. Non-temperature-dependent swelling is observed up to 80% RH. Above that, thermoresponsive behavior is also demonstrated to be present in humid environment for the first time, whereas toward 100% RH, film thickness and index appear to approach the values obtained in water at the respective temperatures. The response times are similar in a large range of RH and are faster than the ones of the reference humidity sensor used (i.e., seconds). A sensor/actuator hygromorphic device was built by coating a thin flower-shaped poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) substrate with the thermoresponsive polymer. The large swelling due to water uptake upon exposure to humid environment at temperatures below the LCST caused the petals to bend, mimicking the capability of plants to respond to environmental stimuli via reversible mechanical motion.

Abstract:Chitosan is a pH-responsive self-assembling polysaccharide that can be electrodeposited to form a hydrogel film. During electrodeposition a host of dynamic processes occur simultaneously over a hierarchy of length scales. Experiments have shown that the microstructure and properties of the deposited gels are highly dependent on the solution conditions and imposed electrical signals. However, detailed mechanisms are not understood. Here we use molecular dynamics simulations to explore the conformational dynamics of individual chitosan chains composed of 20 glucosamine units in aqueous solution. Simulations yield a total persistence length of about 5 nm, in agreement with the lower range of the experimental estimates and supporting a wormlike-chain model. The surprisingly high flexibility arises from the glycosidic linkage sampling, an appreciable population of anti-psi conformation which is associated with backbone bending and higher flexibility. Significantly, the presence of added salt increases the anti-psi population and consequently flexibility for both charged and neutral chains. The latter is due to counterion binding and disruption of an intramolecular hydrogen bond that stabilizes the extended conformation. Thus, our data suggest that salt concentration modulates the conformation and dynamics of individual chitosan chains in addition to interchain hydrogen bonding during pH-induced self-assembly. The insight from this work provides a missing piece of;the puzzle toward understanding the complex mechanism by which solution conditions control the hydrogel properties of chitosan at the microscopic level which cannot be accessed experimentally.
Investigation into Effects of Membrane Thickness on Electromechanical Properties of Biopolymer Chitosan-Based Electroactive Paper

Abstract:Chitosan-based electroactive paper has been reported as a smart material, which has merits in terms of lightweight, dry condition, biodegradability, sustainability, large displacement output, and low actuation voltage. However, our recent investigations found its actuation performance is highly sensitive to the membrane thicknesses, both on the electrolyte layer and the electrode layer. Focused on this issue, in this paper, we introduce a biopolymer ionic actuator made by multiwalled carbon nanotube, ionic liquid electrode, and polymer-supported chitosan. As a result, we find that chitosan polymer actuator with the thick electrode layer (0.7 mm) behaves with a larger blocking force (9.66 mN) and a smaller displacement (9.53 mm), and the lifetime under applied voltage of 3 V at 0.25 Hz is 1.75 times surpassed the thin one (0.3 mm). In addition to that, we investigate effects of membrane thicknesses on the electrical properties of chitosan polymer actuator, and figure out the relationship between the tensile strength of the membrane and the volume of the ionic solution in the electrolyte layer.

Abstract:In order to develop stimuli-responsive hydrogel, chitosan graft copolymer with chitosan back-bone and poly(N-isopropylacrylamide)-block-poly(acrylic acid) (PNIPAAm-b-PAA) branch chains was prepared by reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization in DMF. The chain transfer agent was obtained by modification of chitosan with 3-benzylsulfanyl thiocarbonylsulfanyl propionic acid (BPATT) with 68% the degree of substitute. The graft polymerizations possessed controlled/living characteristics. The behavior of the graft copolymer in aqueous solution was investigated by dynamic light scattering, transmission electron microscopy, and UV-visible spectrophotometer. N-Phthaloylchitosan-graft-(poly(N-isopropylacrylamide)-block-poly(acrylic acid)) copolymer (N-phthaloylchitosan-g-(PNIPAAm-b-PAA)) could assemble to micelles in aqueous solution in range of 200-300 nm with narrow size distribution, and the hydrodynamic diameter could be controlled dependent on length of branch chains and temperature. The LCST values of micelle could be modulated from 34 to 40 °C by controlling the constitution of branch chains, pH, and concentration.
The effect of water states on mechanical properties of 3-dimensional chitosan materials

Abstract:3-Dimensional chitosan (CS) materials with high mechanical properties have been prepared via in-situ precipitated method. Owing to the existence of hydrophilic groups, the structure and properties of CS materials is easily affected by the hydrated water. Water sorption in the CS material is Fickian in nature. Thermal analyses revealed the existence of up to three energetically distinct states of water: bound water, intermediate water and free water in the water saturated CS rod, each type of water have different effects on the mechanical properties of the material. Initially I there exists thermal stable bound water that can not be easily removed. Interaction between water and CS results in a strengthening of the hydrogen bond network. Subsequent absorbed intermediate water of CS material in the water environment acts as a plasticizer, forming water-water bridges that loosen the hydrogen bonding network. Modeling of the modulus and strength of CS rods with the Fermi's equation for the fall in the modulus and strength as a function of water content under isothermal condition was fitted. Differ to other CS blends, this intermediate water is non-freezing. In the later stage of water sorption, water enters the CS and loosely adhered as free water which is freezing, undergoes no thermal phase transition over the range of temperatures normally associated with bulk water, having few effects on the mechanical properties of the CS rod.

Abstract:The actuation phenomena of materials upon external stimulus have attracted much attention for the development of excellent sensors and devices. Herein, we present a smart Janus-faced film that exhibits novel behavior of reverse orthogonal actuation under high humidity and a positive actuation under low humidity, which is achieved by asymmetric polymer brushes on polydimethysiloxane as a substrate through surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization. The classical theory of plates and shells and finite element simulations are also applied to understand the orthogonal actuation mechanism of the actuator. This Janus-faced film can reversely grab objects rapidly under high humidity, which provides significant potential to design a more intelligent actuator. In addition, this film is highly sensitive to humidity that even the approaching finger can make it to bend, which is just like the actuation behavior of Mimosa pudica. Based on the above phenomena, we also design the sensing devices to realize the detection of humidity. Interestingly, the film intelligently identifies different solvents (e.g., water and ethanol). This work may demonstrate significant potential in smart surface modifications, flexible robots, bionic sensors, and other fields.

Abstract:Hydrophobic derivatives of polysaccharides possess an amphiphilic behavior and are widely used as rheological modifiers, selective sorbents, and stabilizers for compositions intended for various applications. In this work, we studied the mechanochemical reactions of chitosan alkylation when interacting with docosylglycidyl and hexadecylglycidyl ethers in the absence of solvents at shear deformation in a pilot twin-screw extruder. The chemical structure and physical properties of the obtained derivatives were characterized by elemental analysis, FT-IR spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering, scanning electron microscopy, and mechanical tests. According to calculations for products soluble in aqueous media, it was possible to introduce about 5–12 hydrophobic fragments per chitosan macromolecule with a degree of polymerization of 500–2000. The length of the carbon chain of the alkyl substituent significantly affects its reactivity under the chosen conditions of mechanochemical synthesis. It was shown that modification disturbs the packing ability of the macromolecules, resulting in an increase of plasticity and drop in the elastic modulus of the film made from the hydrophobically modified chitosan samples.

Reprogrammable Humidity-Driven Liquid Crystalline Polymer Actuator Enabled by Dynamic Ionic Bonds

Abstract:Liquid crystalline polymer (LCP) is a promising candidate in the design and fabrication of intelligent soft materials due to the combination of programmable anisotropy and elasticity. Here, a novel strategy to fabricate reprogrammable humidity-responsive LCP materials enabled by dynamic ionic cross-links were put forward. The prepared LCP film deforms reversibly with the change of relative humidity (RH). However, the humidity responsivity loses after soaking the film into CaCl2 solution because of the lock of hygroscopic groups by the formed ionic bonds. By selectively cross-linking specific regions of the LCP film, distinctive humidity-driven motions of the film could be realized. More interestingly, by the EDTA-2K solution treatment, ionic cross-links can be interrupted, leading the LCP film responsive to humidity again. Thanks to feasibly removable ionic cross-links, the humidity-directed soft actuator was totally reprogrammable. Abstract:A humidity‐responsive actuator with good programmability for tunable actuation response, high mechanical strength to withstand rupture, and the ability to self‐healin for long‐term usage are designed and fabricated. The smart devices fabricated from this cellulose‐reinforced actuator demonstrate promising potential in smart sensing and packaging materials. Biomimetic actuators are promising candidates for smart soft robotics. The applications of state‐of‐the‐art actuators require the combination of programmable stimuli‐responsiveness, excellent robustness, and efficient self‐healing ability in a wide‐range of working conditions. However, these properties may be mutually exclusive. Inspired by biological tissues, two kinds of polyelectrolytes including polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and polystyrene sulfonate (PSS) are exploited as the fillers of cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) for the fabrication of the CNF/PVA/PSS (CAS) film via the assembly of the physically‐crosslinked network through multiple H‐bonding and electrostatic interactions. Achieved by a casting‐evaporation strategy, internal stress is stored within the polymer matrix and transforms into reversible anisotropic bending deformations in response to a humidity gradient. The speed, direction, and pitch of the bending can be programmed by tailoring the internal stresses and geometry of the samples. Moreover, the H‐bonded network also contributes to the effective energy dissipation toward high toughness during tensile stretching, as well as self‐healing ability during moisture saturation of the CAS films. This enables the fabrication of a humidity‐sensitive flower‐shaped actuator and self‐healable packaging paper. This study presents a biomimetic strategy for the fabrication of multi‐functional soft robotics, which holds great promise for applications in the fields of biosensors and smart packaging.

Abstract:Untethered small actuators have drawn tremendous interest owing to their reversibility, flexibility, and widespread applications in various fields. For polymer actuators, however, it is still challenging to achieve programmable structural changes under different stimuli caused by the intractability and single‐stimulus responses of most polymer materials. Herein, we develop multi‐stimuli‐responsive polymer actuators that can respond to light and solvent via structural changes. The actuators are based on bilayer films of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and azobenzene chromophore (AAZO)‐crosslinked poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDAC). Upon UV light irradiation, the AAZO undergoes trans‐cis‐trans photoisomerization, causing the bending of the bilayer films. When the UV light is off, a shape recovery towards an opposite direction occurs spontaneously. The reversible deformation can be repeated at least 20 cycles. Upon solvent vapor annealing, one of the bilayer films can be selectively swollen, causing the bending of the bilayer films with the directions controlled by the solvent vapors. The effects of different parameters, such as the weight ratios of AAZO and film thicknesses, on the bending angles and curvatures of the polymer films are also analyzed. The results demonstrate that multi‐stimuli‐responsive actuators with fast responses and high reproducibility can be fulfilled. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved

Abstract:A structurally rearrangeable polymer thin film is constructed and used analytical techniques to detect the structural, mechanical, electrical, and hygroscopic properties at varying humidities. Benefiting from these tunable properties, this polymer thin film shows the potential of being used as an actuator, environmental humidity sensor, and healable conductor, whose structures and functionalities can be restored by a humidifying/drying cycle. The prospects of endowing stimuli‐responsive materials with various life‐like behaviors are promoting the development of intelligent robotic and electronic devices. However, it is challenging to incorporate stimuli‐responsive actuating and healing capabilities into one single material system. Herein, the design and assembly of humidity‐responsive thin films composed of poly(3,4‐ethylenedioxythiophene):polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT:PSS) and sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (NaCMC) forming a conducting polymer composite through a physically cross‐linked and hydrogen‐bonded supramolecular network are described. Owing to its enhanced dynamics of hydrogen bonding at an elevated humidity, the PEDOT:PSS/NaCMC thin film exhibits a rapid humidity‐responsive actuating performance in an environment with humidity gradient, as well as a repairing function of the structural, mechanical, electrical, and actuating properties after being damaged through a humidifying‐drying cycle. Based on a combined analytical approach, a structural model is proposed for the rearrangement of the thin film when being exposed to stepwise humidity levels at multi‐length scales. Due to the structural rearrangement powered by humidity variations, the film exhibits tunable actuating and healing performance, which makes it a promising candidate material for applications in intelligent soft robotics such as artificial muscles.

Abstract:Hydrogels such as poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate are a class of cross-linked polymers that have the ability to absorb water and change volume. Here, a humidity responsiveness of hydrogel film fabricated by the photopolymerization of poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEG-DA) monomer is reported. This kind of film could be driven by a small humidity gradient, thus spontaneous deformation and motion can be achieved by placing the film onto a moist filter paper. The influence factors of humidity response sensitivity such as the exposure time and number-average molecular weight of PEG-DA monomer used during the fabrication are investigated. Under different relative humidity, the film displays different degrees of pink color and the intensities of fluorescence under 365 nm illumination are also different, which renders the film to be used as a "humidity test strip." A humidity-driven walking device is fabricated and the walking velocity is about 3 mm min(-1) under the actuating water vapor. Vapor of volatile polar solvents could also drive the actuator to achieve fast deformation and shows the variety of the film responsivity.

Abstract:Responsive polymer materials possessing variable mechanical properties have shown promising practical applications, whereas water has clear advantages among the triggers owing to its wide abundance, green characteristics, as well as mild conditions involved. However, ubiquitous water‐induced softening would prevent polymer materials from applications with high humidity or aqueous environment. Herein, an unprecedented polymer gel material is reported that exhibits a dramatic and reversible water‐induced stiffening base on phase separation, differing from traditional ones that are usually weakened upon hydration due to the plasticizing effect. The material shows a large stiffness change in Young's modulus (as much as 104 times), which is much larger than that induced by glass transition and comparable to that caused by crystallization‐melting process. The polymer materials are fabricated in a facile way by introducing an ionic liquid and a lithium salt into a poly(benzyl methacrylate) network. Moreover, the volume remains almost unchanged during the reversible soft–stiff transition. A universal approach of water‐induced stiffening is proposed and verified on various systems. As for demonstration, this material is used for humidity‐induced shape memory. This work offers an effective method for developing water‐induced stiffened material and will pave the way toward potential applications for water‐responsive polymer materials. Abstract:Abstract Hydrogels are three-dimensional, hydrophilic, polymer networks that are able to imbibe large amounts of water or biological fluids, while maintaining their dimensional stability. The polymer binding might be achieved by chemical or physical interactions. Physical crosslinking of a polymer to form its hydrogel, might be accomplished either by casting-solvent evaporation (SC) method or by freeze–thaw (FT) technique. The physical hydrogels, especially the ones based on natural biopolymers, like polysaccharides, are being widely used in industry and medicine due to their favourable properties: biocompatibility; biodegradability; low toxicity and eco-friendly characteristics. Polysaccharides, like chitosan (CH) and (hydroxypropyl)methyl cellulose (HPMC) have gained great attention due to its stimuli sensitive properties: pH and temperature responsiveness, respectively. Thus, within this work we have developed physically crosslinked CH:HPMC hydrogel films, using both SC and FT techniques. The attained CH:HPMC membranes were evaluated in terms of their swelling, thermal (low critical solution temperature—LCST), structural (attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy) and morphological (scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy) properties. According to these results, the developed membranes exhibit a good miscibility between the two component biopolymers. Moreover, the CH:HPMC membranes exhibit a high swelling capacity (SWFT = 1,172 and SWSC = 7,323), a low surface roughness (Sq = 5.6–9.5 nm) and an elevated LCST (LCST = 85.2–87.5 °C). The stimuli sensitive behaviour makes hydrogels appealing for the design of smart devices applicable in a variety of technological fields. In our particular case, we envisage the application of such materials as active substances (moisturisers, antiperspirants and scents) delivers, into textile substrates in a controlled manner.
