Abstract:Purpose: To evaluate the color stability of 3D-printed interim restorations with different surface treatments while immersed in various staining solutions or beverages (artificial saliva, tea, coffee, and wine) for 6 months. Material and methods: An acrylic tooth was prepared for an all-ceramic full-coverage restoration. A laboratory scanner was used to digitize the prepared abutment tooth. A virtual all-ceramic full-coverage restoration was designed on the digitized abutment tooth using a laboratory CAD/CAM software. Eighty abutment teeth and interim restorations were 3D-printed with tooth-colored photopolymerizing resin. The restorations were randomly allocated into two different groups: Polish and Optiglaze. For the Polish group, interim restorations were finished and polished with aluminum oxide finishers/polishers. For the Optiglaze group, one layer of nanofilled, light-polymerizing protective coating was then applied. The 80 printed interim crowns were divided into 4 different groups depending on where they would be immersed: Artificial saliva, coffee, wine, and tea. After the sample allocations, there were 8 experimental groups. Each group was allocated with 10 specimens. Color measurements were obtained using a digital spectrophotometer in conjunction with The CIE L*a*b* system before the immersion and 6 months after the immersion. Two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to test the effects of surface treatment, immersion liquid, and their interaction on ΔE at 6-month post-immersion. Fisher's protected least significant differences (LSD) was used as post hoc test to compare groups differences (α = .05). Results: There were significant effects of surface treatment [F(1,72) = 13.39, p = 0.000], immersion liquid [F(3,72) = 74.18, p = 0.000], and their interaction [F(3,72) = 16.33, p = 0.000] on ΔE at 6-month post-immersion at the α = .05 level. The polish group showed significantly higher ΔE than the Optiglaze group when immersed in coffee (p < 0.001) and wine (p = 0.015). The Optiglaze group showed significantly higher ΔE than the polish group that was immersed in artificial saliva (p < 0.001). The wine group showed higher ΔE than all other immersion liquid groups for both polish and Optiglaze surface treatments (p < 0.001 for all comparisons). ΔL* showed a reduction that was significantly higher than the 2.0 acceptability threshold in the wine-polish (p < 0.001) and wine-Optiglaze (p < 0.001) groups. ΔE showed a color change that was significantly higher than the perceptibility and acceptability thresholds for all the groups under polish surface treatment (p < 0.001). ΔE also showed a color change that was significantly higher than the perceptibility and acceptability thresholds for artificial saliva, tea, and wine under Optiglaze surface treatment (p = 0.004). Conclusions: 3D-printed interim restorations showed significant discoloration after 6-months immersions in the artificial saliva and common beverages (including tea, coffee, and wine). Among all the chromogenic beverages, red wine caused the most significant discoloration on the interim restorations. When 3D-printed interim restorations are needed for extended intraoral service, nano-filled, light polymerizing protective coating can reduce the restoration discoloration caused by chromogenic beverages. The protective effect is most significant against coffee.
Color stability of CAD‐CAM hybrid ceramic materials following immersion in artificial saliva and wine

Abstract:Purpose To examine the color stability of 3D‐printed and milled, interim, and definitive, restorative materials after immersion in artificial saliva and wine for 1, 3, and 6 months. Material and Methods The study used a 2 × 5 factorial design with 10 subgroups, including 2 immersion liquids (artificial saliva and wine) and 5 manufacturing technology and restorative material combinations (n = 10). Color measurements were taken using a contact‐type digital spectrophotometer (CM‐2600d Spectrophotometer; Konica Minolta Healthcare Americas Inc) before immersion and at 1 month (T1), 3 months (T3), and 6 months (T6) after immersion. The CIE2000 system was used to calculate quantitative measurements of color differences in ΔE00, and comparisons were made to the acceptability threshold (AT) and perceptibility threshold (PT). Repeated measures of ANOVA (α = 0.05) were used to compare differences in color changes between manufacturing technology/restorative material‐immersion liquid combinations at T1, T3, and T6. Results To compare the effect of immersion liquid and time on the manufacturing technology/restorative material groups, the ΔE00 values were compared to the PT of 0.8 and the AT of 1.8. Wine caused significant color changes in ΔE00 values beyond the PT and AT values in all groups at all time intervals, except for the AT value of milled definitive crowns (hybrid nano‐ceramic material). Wine immersion caused significant ΔE00 for all manufacturing technology/restorative material groups at all time intervals (1 month, 3 months, and 6 months) when compared to artificial saliva immersion (all p < 0.001). Conclusion Upon exposure to artificial saliva, 80%–100% of samples from all groups remained within the acceptable and perceptible color change thresholds. The wine had significant chromogenic effects on all tested restorative materials, however, the milled definitive crowns (hybrid nano‐ceramic material) showed the greatest color stability. For patients with heavy wine consumption, 3D‐printed definitive crowns (hybrid ceramic‐filled material) may show discoloration exceeding acceptable and perceptible color change limits.

The effect of surface treatments on the color stability of CAD-CAM interim fixed dental prostheses

Abstract:Statement of problem: Additive manufacturing or 3D printing is gaining popularity in dentistry, including for interim fixed dental prostheses (IFDPs). However, evidence regarding the color stability of 3D-printed IFDPs is lacking. Purpose: The purpose of this in vitro study was to investigate whether different surface treatments could affect the color stability of milled and 3D-printed IFDPs after simulated physiological aging. Material and methods: Forty milled IFDPs were fabricated with a 5-axis dental mill (DWX-51D; Roland DGA Corp) from polymethyl methacrylate disks (Temp Esthetic 98, A3.5, 98.5×16 mm; Harvest Dental Products, LLC). Forty 3D-printed IFDPs were fabricated with an in-office digital light processing 3D printer (MAX; Asiga) and light-polymerizing resin (NextDent Crown & Bridge A3.5; NextDent B.V). All milled and 3D-printed IFDPs were allocated into 4 different groups (n=10), according to different surface treatments: Control, Polish, Optiglaze, and Skinglaze. In the Control group, no surface treatment was applied to the IFDPs. For the Polish group, IFDPs were finished and polished with aluminum oxide finishers/polishers (Enhance PoGo Complete Kit; Dentsply Sirona). For the Optiglaze and Skinglaze groups, specimens were first finished and polished and prepared with additional light-polymerizing protective coatings (Optiglaze; GC America Inc, or New Outline Skin Glaze; anaxdent North America). Shade measurements were recorded with a digital spectrophotometer (Vita Easyshade V; VITA North America) before and after the thermocycling for the color stability comparisons. The effects of interim prosthesis type and surface treatments on ΔE∗, ΔL∗, Δa∗, and Δb∗ were examined using 2-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), and ΔE∗ was considered as the primary outcome variable. Post hoc pairwise comparisons were performed by using the Tukey honestly significant difference (HSD) method (α=.05 for all tests). Results: Milled IFDPs had significantly smaller ΔE∗ than 3D-printed prostheses for the Control group only (P<.001). Within the milled IFDPs, Optiglaze group (mean ±standard deviation, 1.01 ±0.38) had significantly lower ΔE∗ than all the other surface treatments groups (Control group: 2.38 ±0.44, P<.001; Polish group: 1.83 ±0.51, P=.025; and Skinglaze group: 1.85 ±0.78, P=.021). Within the 3D-printed IFDPs, the Control group (3.83 ±0.71) had significantly larger ΔE∗ than all other surface treatments (Polish group: 2.66 ±0.89, P=.018; Skinglaze group: 1.40 ±0.73, P<.001; and Optiglaze group: 1.37 ±0.67, P<.001). The Polish group had significantly higher ΔE∗ than Skinglaze group (P=.009) and Optiglaze group (P=.007), while Skinglaze and Optiglaze groups were not significantly different from each other (P=1.000). Conclusions: For the milled IFDPs, only the nano-filled, light-polymerizing protective coating significantly lowered color changes after thermocycling simulating 6 months of intraoral physiological aging. For the 3D-printed IFDPs, surface polishing and both light-polymerizing protective coating agents all significantly reduced color changes of the prostheses after thermocycling. The protective effect of light-polymerizing coating agents was more substantial.

Abstract:OBJECTIVES: One of the most important aspects that determines the clinical lifetime of aesthetic restorations, is the color stability (CS) over the long term. This study aims to assess the effect of artificial aging and thermocycling in different staining solutions on the CS of bioactive restorative materials compared to conventional ones.METHODS: The following four material groups were investigated: ACTIVA™ Bioactive (AB) (Pulpdent Corporation, Massachusetts, United States), Beautifil II (BF) (SHOFU Inc., Kyoto, Japan), Fuji II (FJ) (GC Corporation, Tokyo Japan), and Filtek™ Z350 XT (FT) (3M, Minnesota, United States). A total of 100 specimens were fabricated using an acrylic mold and then immersed in five staining solutions groups: coffee, black tea, Cola, mixed berry juice, and saline. Baseline shade (T0) was recorded using two spectro-photometer devices, VITA Easyshade® Advance (VITA Zahnfabrik, Baden-Wurttemberg, Germany) and Color-Eye® 7000A (X-Rite, Inc., Grand Rapids, Michigan, United States). Following this, the shade was recorded at 30 days (T1), three months (T2), and after 5000 thermocycles (5C-55C) (T3). CIE L*a*b* (International Commission on Illumination color space) data was used to calculate ΔE for each group.RESULTS: All samples showed a significant color change (P<0.001) following one and three months of storage and after thermocycling. AB and BF showed the highest CS over time, whereas FT and FJ showed the least CS.CONCLUSION: The CS of restorative materials is mostly determined by their type, followed by staining solution type and thermocycling. The most potent solutions were coffee, tea, and berry juice.

Abstract:Statement of problem Research on the color and translucency properties of 3-dimensionally (3D) printed definitive resins and the effect of coffee thermocycling on these properties is lacking. Purpose The purpose of this in vitro study was to investigate the effect of coffee thermocycling on the color and translucency parameters of the milled and 3D printed materials used for definitive restorations. Material and methods Plate-shaped specimens (12×12×1 mm) of 3 milled (IPS e.max CAD (LDS), Vita Enamic (PICN), Cerasmart (RNC)) and two 3D printed (VarseoSmile Crown plus (VSP), Permanent Crown (PC)) were fabricated (n=12). The brightness (L*), red-green (a*), and yellow-blue (b*) parameters were measured with a spectrophotometer before and after 10 000 coffee thermocycles. The relative translucency parameters (RTP 00 ) and color change were calculated using the CIEDE2000 formula. Stainability (ΔE 00 ) and translucency differences (ΔRTP 00 ) were evaluated. Data were analyzed with the Kruskal–Wallis, Mann–Whitney U, and Wilcoxon tests. The Spearman correlation test was used to analyze the ΔE 00 and ΔRTP 00 values (α=.05). Results The type of material and coffee thermocycling significantly affected the evaluated parameters at both measurement periods ( P =.001). Coffee thermocycling decreased the L* and RTP 00 values while increasing the a* and b* values ( P =.001). The highest ΔE 00 values were found in VSP and PC, which were statistically similar ( P =.291), while the highest | ΔRTP 00 | values were observed for VSP ( P =.001). The lowest ΔE 00 and | ΔRTP 00 | values were found in LDS ( P =.001). A positive relationship was found between the ΔE 00 and | ΔRTP 00 | values ( R =.590, P =.01). Conclusions After coffee thermocycling, all tested materials exhibited a darkened, yellowish, and opaque appearance, although the alterations in color and translucency remained within clinically acceptable thresholds (AT 00 =1.81) for these materials.

Comparative Analysis of Modern 3D-Printed Hybrid Resin-Ceramic Materials for Indirect Restorations: An In Vitro Study

Abstract:The study investigated the impact of aging on surface roughness, color stability, and biocompatibility of hybrid resin-ceramic materials. A total of 225 specimens were produced from three three-dimensional (3D)-printed (HarzLabs Dental Sand Pro (HL), BEGO VarseoSmile Crown plus (BV), Voco V-Print c&b temp (VV)) and one milled material (Voco Grandio Blocs (VG)). Specimens were grouped into untreated, polished, and glazed surfaces. 5000 thermal cycles simulated aging. Surface roughness and color stability were analyzed, and surface topography was observed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Biocompatibility was evaluated with L929 cells. Surface roughness differed significantly between untreated and other groups, with no changes before and after artificial aging. Untreated milled samples were significantly smoother than 3D-printed ones. SEM analysis revealed roughest surfaces in untreated 3D-printed specimens. Polished and glazed specimens were smoother than untreated ones. Color values showed significant differences between untreated and treated/aged groups. No material showed cytotoxicity. In summary, untreated VG was smoother than 3D-printed materials, but polishing and glazing reduced roughness to levels comparable to VG. Surface treatments induced color changes, with glazing causing more changes than polishing. Aging affected color stability and biocompatibility but not surface roughness. All materials showed acceptable color changes and good biocompatibility.

Color and optical properties of 3D printing restorative polymer-based materials: A scoping review

Abstract:Objective: Color and optical properties are particularly crucial to mimic natural tooth. This scoping review aimed to present an overview of the literature published on color and optical properties of 3D printing restorative polymer-based materials. The literature search was performed in MED-LINE/Pubmed, Scopus and Web of Science. Materials and methods: The literature search was conducted in the three databases based on the question: "Are the optical properties and color adequately reported on polymer-based 3D printing dental restorative materials studies?" with no restriction on year of publication. Data were reported and synthesized following PRISMA-ScR statement. Results: Nine studies fit the inclusion criteria. Five studies focused on evaluating only color stability; three articles assessed the color stability along with mechanical and morphological properties and only one study compared color parameters of 3D printed to conventional polymers. Two studies evaluated translucency parameter and no study was found evaluating scattering, absorption, and transmittance. Conclusions: Color and optical properties of 3D printed polymers that can be used in restorative dentistry are not adequately evaluated and characterized. Future studies on the influence of experimental printing conditions should include these physical properties to assist on improving esthetics. Clinical significance: This review shows the scarce literature existing on color and optical properties of 3D printing restorative polymer-based materials. These properties and their study are of outmost importance to create materials that mimic natural tooth to allow clinicians to obtain esthetically pleasant restorations.
Determination of the Color Change of Various Esthetic Monolithic Monochromatic Computer-Aided Design/Computer-Aided Manufacturing Materials

Abstract:Dental technology has developed materials for prosthetics that are very similar to natural teeth and offer a good balance between durability and esthetics; however, some of these materials are not very color-stable under the influence of external factors. Therefore, the aim of this study is to determine and compare the color change (∆E00) of different esthetic monolithic monochromatic CAD/CAM materials after they have been thermocycled and treated with staining solutions. The color parameters were determined using a spectrophotometer on a white and black background. Five CAD/CAM materials were used for this study—CAD/CAM nanoceramic (GC Cerasmart270), CAD/CAM lithium disilicate ceramic (IPS e.max CAD), CAD/CAM polymer (Telio CAD), CAD/CAM composite (Tetric CAD) and CAD/CAM polymer-infiltrated ceramic (Vita Enamic). The test specimens produced were divided into groups and were thermocycled in distilled water. They were then stored for four weeks at 37 °C in either distilled water as a control liquid, black tea, instant coffee or red wine. The aim is also to evaluate the color changes as a function of the exposure time of the staining solutions. The results obtained were analyzed statistically. All CAD/CAM materials tend to discolor to varying degrees. Among the factors contributing to discoloration, red wine proved to be the most significant influencing factor. The conclusion from the results is that the color change is influenced by the type of material, the staining solution, the sample thickness, the color background and the aging time.

Evaluation of Long‐term colour resistance of composite materials used in aligner treatments: A comparative study

Abstract:Aim The aim of this study is to evaluate the discolouration resistance of attachments made of composites having different physical properties, filler ratios and viscosity through the simulated environment and conditions. Materials and Methods Seventy‐two extracted human teeth were aligned to simulate upper and lower dental arches. The attachments were prepared according to the guides determined by ClearCorrect. Three different composite groups were used for attachments preparation: Aligner Connect, G‐Aenial Universal Injectable, and Tetric Prime and Tetric Evoflow combination. Dental models and aligners were kept in artificial saliva throughout the experiment of 96 weeks. The aligners were also subjected to 2308 thermal cycles and insertion and removing procedures 840 times for each period of 12 weeks. Afterwards, the models were kept in coffee and red wine solutions. Colour measurements were made with Vita Easy Shade 4.0 at 12th, 24th, 48th and 96th simulated weeks. Results No significant difference in discolouration was observed during thermal cycle application of 12th and 24th week experimental periods. In the later periods, discolouration was observed in the composite materials, and G‐Aenial Universal Injectable was less coloured than the other samples. The composite samples were more coloured in proportion to their residence time. The G‐Aenial Universal Injectable was more affected by wine solution, and Tetric Prime and Tetric Evoflow combination were more affected by coffee solution. Conclusions Viscosity, resin matrix content and nature of inorganic filler particles of the composite materials significantly affect the colour changing properties of them due to the long‐term ageing and exposure to colouring agents.

The influence of printing angle on color and translucency of 3D printed resins for dental restorations

Abstract:Objectives: To evaluate the influence of printing orientation on color and translucency of 3D printing restorative resins. Methods: Four 3D printing resin systems in the available shades (DFT-Detax Freeprint Temp- A1, A2,A3; FP-Formlabs Permanent Crown- A2,A3,B1,C2; FT- Formlabs Temporary CB- A2,A3,B1,C2; GCT-GC Temporary- Light, Medium) were evaluated. Three samples (10×10×1.2 mm) from each material were printed at two different printing orientations (0° and 90°) and polished to 1.00 ± 0,01 mm of thickness. Spectral reflectance was measured against black background using a calibrated spectroradiometer, CIE D65 standard illuminant and the 45°/0°geometry. Color and translucency differences were evaluated using CIEDE2000 metric (ΔE00) and 50:50% perceptibility (PT00 and TPT00) and acceptability (AT00 and TAT00) thresholds. Results: In general, color changes due to printing orientation at (0° and 90°) were mainly produced by ΔL* or ΔC* . ΔE00 were above PT00 for all DFT shades, FP-B1, FP-C2, FT-A2 and FT-B1. Only for DFT-1, ΔE00 was above AT00. ΔRTP00 values were above TPT00 for DFT-A1, DFT-A3, FP-B1 and FT-B1, but lower than TAT00. The direction of the changes in translucency (ΔRTP00) depends on the material and shade. Significance: The selection of building orientation (0° and 90°) for the 3D printed resins influence the visual color and translucency and therefore their esthetic appearance. These aspects should be considered when printing dental restorations using the evaluated materials.

Abstract:Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the chromatic adaptability and color stability of two different composite resins, Omnichroma and Estelite Bulk-Fill Flow, in Class V restorations at different times. Materials and methods: Standardized Class V cavities were prepared on the labial surface of 34 extracted intact and noncarious human permanent molars. The dental elements were randomly divided into two groups according to the resin composite material. Group 1 was restored with Omnichroma (Tokuyama Dental Corporation Inc., Tokyo, Japan) and Group 2 was restored with Estelite BulkFill Flow Universal (Tokuyama Dental Corporation Inc., Tokyo, Japan). Color properties were assessed using a spectrophotometer, SpectroShadeTM Micro (MHT Optic Research, Niederhasli, Switzerland), at baseline (T0), immediately after Class V restoration (T1), 24 h after restoration (T2) and after thermocycling (T3) (ISO/TS 11405, 2015 protocol). Color difference (ΔE) was analyzed with a Student's t-test and a Wilcoxon–Mann–Whitney test to evaluate the differences, in terms of chromatic adaptability, between the two materials (inter-group analysis) while Kruskal–Wallis test e Two-way ANOVA statistical tests were used to evaluate the color stability of each material over time (intra-group analysis). Results: Regarding the inter-group analysis, there were no statistically significant differences between the two materials in all the comparisons: T0–T1 (p = 0.9025), T0–T2 (p = 0.2779), T0–T3 (p = 0.4694). Moreover, both groups showed an average ΔE > 2. In the intra-group analysis, no statistically significant differences were observed in either Group 1 (p = 0.954) or Group 2 (p = 0.8654). Conclusions: The in vitro color matching, assessed by spectrophotometry, of the two tested resin composites does not vary at different time intervals. Furthermore, even though both composites use different mechanisms to produce the color the human eye perceives, they show very similar chromatic adaptability.

Effects of printing orientation and artificial ageing on martens hardness and indentation modulus of 3D printed restorative resin materials

Abstract:Background: Three-dimensional (3D) printing is increasingly used to fabricate dental restorations due to its enhanced precision, consistency and time and cost-saving advantages. The properties of 3D-printed resin materials can be influenced by the chosen printing orientation which can impact the mechanical characteristics of the final products. Purpose: The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of printing orientation and artificial ageing on the Martens hardness (HM) and indentation modulus (EIT) of 3D-printed definitive and temporary dental restorative resins. Methods: Disk specimens (20 mm diameter × 2 mm height) were additively manufactured in three printing orientations (0°, 45°, 90°) using five 3D-printable resins: VarseoSmile Crownplus (VCP), Crowntec (CT), Nextdent C&B MFH (ND), Dima C&B temp (DT), and GC temp print (GC). The specimens were printed using a DLP 3D-printer (ASIGA MAX UV), while LavaTM Ultimate (LU) and Telio CAD (TC) served as milled control materials. Martens hardness (HM) and indentation modulus (EIT) were tested both before and after storage in distilled water and artificial saliva for 1, 30, and 90 days at 37 °C. Results: 90° printed specimens exhibited higher HM than the other orientations at certain time points, but no significant differences were observed in HM and EIT between orientations for all 3D-printed materials after 90 days of ageing in both aging media. LU milled control material exhibited the highest HM and EIT among the tested materials, while TC, the other milled control, showed similar values to the 3D printed resins. CT and VCP (definitive resins) and ND displayed higher Martens parameters compared to DT and GC (temporary resins). The hardness of the 3D-printed materials was significantly impacted by artificial ageing compared to the controls, with ND having the least hardness reduction percentage amongst all 3D-printed materials. The hardness reduction percentage in distilled water and artificial saliva was similar for all materials except for TC, where higher reduction was noted in artificial saliva. Significance: The used 3D printed resins cannot yet be considered viable alternatives to milled materials intended for definitive restorations but are preferable for use as temporary restorations.
The Development of a 3D Colour Reproduction System of Digital Impressions with an Intraoral Scanner and a 3D Printer: a Preliminary Study

Abstract:Abstract This study aimed to develop a three-dimensional (3D) colour reproduction system to improve the aesthetic effects of dental prostheses. The system’s colour accuracy was also evaluated. Based on the concept of colour management, 96 colour patches were selected to develop colour profiles for an intraoral scanner and a 3D printer using polynomial regression. The colour differences Δ$${E}_{ab}^{\ast }$$ Eab⁎ between colour patches reproduced using different colour profiles and the original colour patches were analysed to select the best combinations of colour profiles. The 3D colour reproduction system with the best-performing (i.e. third-order polynomial regression) colour profiles was finally evaluated using tooth and gum shades. The median Δ$${E}_{ab}^{\ast }$$ Eab⁎ was 6.940 ranging from 1.504 to 32.660. In terms of tooth and gum shade, the median Δ$${E}_{ab}^{\ast }$$ Eab⁎ was 6.313, and half of the shade blocks were above the mismatch threshold (Δ$${E}_{ab}^{\ast }$$ Eab⁎ > 6.80). In conclusion, the colour management based on polynomial regression can decrease the colour difference of the 3D colour reproduction system, but not to clinically acceptable levels. Further advances are needed to improve the methods and hardware.
Color stability of two different resin matrix ceramics: randomized clinical trial

Abstract:Background: One of the most common causes of aesthetic failure and restoration replacement is the tooth restorations color mismatch specifically after aging. Methods: One hundred and two participants with endodontically treated first molar were selected clinically. The patients were randomly splited into two groups and restored either with Cerasmart hybrid ceramic or Vita Enamic polymer infiltrated ceramic network (PICN) crowns and cemented using dual cure adhesive cement. The color difference (ΔE) values after cementation at 0 (Baseline), 6, and 12 months of use were obtained by quantification of L*, a*, and b* values with a digital spectrophotometer. Mann-Whitney test used to compare between tested groups at each time point and between (α = 0.05). Results: At 6 months follow-up intervals, Vita Enamic group showed the highest significant ∆L* (p = 0.035) and ∆a* (p < 0.001) compared to Cerasmart group. ∆b* and ∆E showed no significant difference between both groups (p > 0.05). Furthermore, all color parameters of both groups showed statistically significant difference at 12 months follow-up intervals. After 12 months, Vita Enamic restorations presented higher color change compared to Cerasmart restorations with a (p-value of 0.0120). When comparing the total color difference ∆Et through-out the follow-up intervals of Vita Enamic & Cerasmart groups, there were insignificant difference (p = 0.263). Conclusion: Both hybrid materials demonstrated comparable color stability after 1 year of clinical service within clinical acceptance range. However, Cerasmart demonstrated a better colour stability after 1 year. Trial registration: ClinicalTrials.gov (ID: NCT05501808) 15/8/ 2022- 'retrospectively registered'.
Comparison of mechanical and surface properties of two 3D printed composite resins for definitive restoration

Abstract:Statement of problem: Additive manufacturing (AM) technology is emerging as an innovative approach in the dental field. In recent years, manufacturers have introduced 3-dimensionally printed composite resins (3D-CRs) that are specifically designed for the AM of definitive prostheses; however, the mechanical and surface properties of these materials require investigation. Purpose: The purpose of this in vitro study was to assess and compare the mechanical and surface properties of 2 commercially available 3D-CRs for definitive restoration after artificial aging. Material and methods: Saremco print Crowntec; Saremco Dental AG and Varseo Smile Crown Plus; Bego GmbH were printed with a layer thickness of 50 µm at a 90-degree angle. A total of 20 bar-shaped specimens (25×2×2 mm) were produced from each material to measure the flexural strength (σf) and elastic modulus (E) using a 3-point bend test, and 5 disk-shaped specimens (Ø15×3 mm) from each material were used to measure the surface microhardness using a microhardness test. Half of the specimens were tested under dry conditions, while the other half were immersed in distilled water for 30 days. Five disk-shaped specimens (Ø15×3 mm) from each material were used to evaluate surface roughness before and after undergoing toothbrushing simulations. Additionally, 5 disk-shaped specimens (Ø15×1 mm) were used to assess water sorption (wsp) and solubility (wsl) over 28 days. Statistical analyses were conducted using the Wilcoxon matched-pairs signed-rank test (1-tailed) with 90% power (α=.05). Results: The mean ±standard deviation flexural strength values were 123.4 ±8.7 MPa for Saremco print Crowntec and 109.9 ±15.8 MPa for Varseo Smile Crown Plus. After aging, these values were 97.5 ±15.2 MPa for Saremco print Crowntec and 94.2 ±11.7 MPa for Varseo Smile Crown Plus. The mean Vickers hardness values were 33.2 ±0.8 N/mm2 for Saremco print Crowntec and 31.5 ±0.6 N/mm2 for Varseo Smile Crown Plus. After aging, the mean values were 31.7 ±0.9 N/mm2 for Saremco print Crowntec and 29.6 ±1.0 N/mm2 for Varseo Smile Crown Plus. The mean modulus of elasticity was 4.2 ±0.3 GPa for Saremco print Crowntec and 3.82 ±0.2 GPa for Varseo Smile Crown Plus. After 21 days, the mean sorption values were 11.52 ±0.6 mg/mm3 for Saremco print Crowntec and 12.43 ±0.4 mg/mm3 for Varseo Smile Crown Plus. After 28 days, the mean solubility values were 1.36 ±0.4 mg/mm3 for Saremco print Crowntec and 0.98 ±0.3 mg/mm3 for Varseo Smile Crown Plus. Significant differences were found between the 2 3D-CRs in flexural strength in the dry state (P=.03), in Young modulus after 30 days of water immersion (P=.023), and in Vickers hardness in the dry state (P=.01) and after 30 days of water immersion (P=.018). Conclusions: Both 3D-CRs provided good in vitro performance and the mechanical properties required for long-term clinical application. Artificial aging decreased the flexural strength of both 3D-CRs.
Spectrophotometric evaluation of color stability of novel composites following exposure to antioxidant beverages: An in vitro study

Abstract:Background: Color matching and stability are the essential considerations in restorative dentistry, as they contribute to the longevity and esthetic appeal of the restorations. Composites with nanoparticles and more filler content are anticipated to be more color-stable. Aim: The aim of the study was to assess and contrast the color stability of esthetic restoration materials following exposure to various antioxidant beverages. Materials and methods: A Class V cavity was prepared on the buccal surface of 40 maxillary premolars. The specimens were divided into two groups: microhybrid (MH) and nanohybrid (NH) composite. The baseline color of each tooth sample was measured and then, the samples were categorized into four subgroups based on the immersion solution (pomegranate juice, beetroot juice, black plum juice, and distilled water) and evaluated on day 1, day 7, day 14, and day 21 using a spectrophotometer-based on CIE L*a*b* color scale. For spectrophotometer analysis, CIE XYZ data were obtained and converted to CIELAB. The samples mean difference in ΔE values before and after being immersed in various beverages. Statistical analysis: The data were statistically analyzed using an independent t-test and one-way analysis of variance. Results: MH and NH composite materials showed color change after being exposed to the test beverages. Conclusion: MH composite causes more color change than NH composite at all-time intervals. Black plum showed the greatest discoloration in both composites.

Abstract:The purpose of this study was to develop standardized reproducible testing methods for evaluating physical properties of periodontal dressing materials. Three commercial compositions (Coe-Pak, Coe-Pak Hard & Fast Set and WondrPak) were studied. Working and setting times were determined by observing the continuous changes in viscosity via the oscillating rheometer. The 24-h and 1-week tensile and shear adhesive bonds to enamel were studied by luting orthodontic lingual cleats with a standard film thickness to the orientated labial surfaces of extracted incisors and pulling them to failure. Dimensional change was studied over a period of 24 h using a linear variable differential transformer (LVDT). The developed testing modalities have greater precision than those previously reported. The concept of 'bench time' was developed during which certain materials cannot be handled immediately after mixing.
Evaluation of the Effect of Various Beverages and Food Materials on the Color Stability of Provisional Materials: An In Vitro Study

Abstract:Aim This study aims to evaluate the color stability of four provisional materials: polymethyl methacrylate (DPI® Self-Cure), 10-ethoxylated bisphenol A dimethacrylate (Oratemp® C&B), bis-acryl composite resin (Systemp® C&B, Ivoclar Vivadent), and bis-acryl composite (Systemp® C&B, Ivoclar Vivadent) combined with light-cure composite (Fusion Flo® LC). Materials and methods A total of 40 specimens were meticulously crafted from modeling wax into discs, each precisely 2 mm thick and 20 mm in diameter. Four provisional materials were packed into molds, yielding 10 specimens for each material group. After mixing and polymerization, the specimens were trimmed and polished. Reflectance spectrophotometers were used for initial color assessments based on the CIELAB color space system. Staining solutions, including coffee, Tata Green Tea, Pepsi, and turmeric, were prepared to mimic dietary agents. Artificial saliva, replicating oral conditions, was formulated and sterilized. The specimens were then immersed in various solutions for 15 days at 37 °C. Color measurements were taken on days 2 and 15 using the same spectrophotometer, calculating color differences (ΔE) from changes in L*, a*, and b* values. Results DPI Self-Cure (polymethyl methacrylate) was found to be the most color-stable temporary restorative material, followed by Vivadent (bis-acryl composite resin), Oratemp (10-ethoxylated bisphenol A dimethacrylate), and Fusion Flo (light-cure composite). Fusion Flo exhibited the highest color change by the 15th day. Coffee and green tea demonstrated the greatest potential for causing color changes in the provisional restorative materials. Conclusion DPI Self-Cure exhibited the highest color stability among the provisional materials, with Vivadent and Oratemp following closely behind. Green tea and coffee were the most potent staining agents, while Pepsi and turmeric induced lesser color changes.
