Abstract:The inter-flat dispersion of hazardous air pollutants in residential built environment has become a growing concern, especially in crowed urban areas. The purpose of present study is to investigate the wind induced air pollutant transmission and cross contamination routes in typical buildings. In this paper, a series of experiments was carried out in a boundary layer wind tunnel using a 1:30 scaled model that represented the typical configuration of rectangular multi-storey residential buildings in Shanghai. Sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) was employed as tracer gas in the wind tunnel tests. The conditions under two ventilation modes, i.e. single-sided natural ventilation and cross natural ventilation, were compared. The tracer gas concentration distributions under four approaching wind angles were monitored and analyzed. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) method was adopted to assist in analyzing airflow patterns. The experiment results elucidated that in the two ventilation scenarios, both of the vertical and horizontal inter-flat airborne transmission could proceed. The wind direction played a key role on the pollutant concentration distribution. Compared with the single-sided ventilation mode, cross ventilation could weaken the air pollutant dispersion along the vertical direction when the contamination source was on the windward or on the leeward unit. When the wind blowing parallelly to the source unit window, namely the source room was on the sideward, cross ventilation would not suppress the vertical transport on one hand, but reinforce the horizontal transmission on the other hand. The study is helpful for the analysis of infection risk of respiratory diseases in the residential buildings.

Abstract:The transition to remote working due to the pandemic has accentuated the importance of clean indoor air, as people spend a significant portion of their time indoors. Amongst the various determinants of indoor air quality, outdoor pollution is a significant source. While conventional studies have certainly helped to quantify the long-term personal exposure to pollutants and assess their health impact, they have not paid special attention to the mechanism of transmission of pollutants between the two environments. Nevertheless, the quantification of infiltration is essential to determine the contribution of ambient pollutants in indoor air quality and its determinants. This study evaluates the transmission of outdoor pollutants into the indoor environment using 3D computational fluid dynamics modelling with a pollution dispersion model. Naturally ventilated buildings next to an urban canyon were modelled and simulated using Ansys Fluent and validated against wind tunnel results from the Concentration Data of Street Canyons database. The model consisted of two buildings of three storeys each, located on either side of a road. Two line-source pollutants were placed in the street, representing traffic emissions. Three internal rooms were selected and modelled on each floor and implemented with various ventilation strategies. Results indicate that for a canyon with an aspect ratio of 1, indoor spaces in upstream buildings are usually less polluted than downstream ones. Although within the canyon, pollution is 2–3 times higher near the upstream building. Cross ventilation can minimise or prevent infiltration of road-side pollutants into indoor spaces, while also assisting in the dispersion of ambient pollutants. The critical configuration, in terms of air quality, is single-sided ventilation from the canyon. This significantly increases indoor pollutant concentration regardless of the building location. The study reveals that multiple factors determine the indoor–outdoor links, and thorough indexing and understanding of the processes can help designers and urban planners in regulating urban configuration and geometries for improved indoor air quality. Future works should look at investigating the influence of indoor emissions and the effects of different seasons.

Abstract:The reliable measurement of pressures on low-rise buildings in the atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) flow remains a challenge, as has been shown by the large discrepancies among results obtained in different wind tunnel facilities or even in the same wind tunnel. Two major causes of the discrepancies are the difficulty of simulating large-scale, low-frequency turbulent fluctuations uniformly across laboratories and the small scale of models in typical civil engineering wind tunnels. To address these issues, it was proposed that a simplified flow be used in laboratory simulations, rather than a conventional ABL flow. In the simplified flow the reference mean wind speed is larger than the mean wind speed of the ABL flow, and the low-frequency fluctuations present in the ABL flow are suppressed; that is, the peak energy of the missing low-frequency fluctuations is supplied in the simplified flow by the increment in the mean wind speed, which may be regarded as a flow fluctuation with zero frequency. High-frequency turbulent fluctuations, which typically affect flow reattachment, are approximately the same in the ABL and the simplified flow. Because, over small distances, low-frequency fluctuations are highly coherent spatially for small low-rise buildings with dimensions of up to approximately 20 m (e.g., single-family residential homes), the peak aerodynamic effects of the two flows may be hypothesized to be approximately the same. Preliminary experimental results obtained in University of Western Ontario’s ABL wind tunnel facility and Florida International University’s small-scale Wall of Wind facility are shown to support this hypothesis. The use of the proposed simplified flow is currently being tested by the authors for application to computational wind engineering (CWE) applications. Such use eliminates the need to simulate the lower frequency fluctuations of the boundary layer flow and thus makes it possible to achieve practical CWE calculations, and it is advantageous in experiments from the points of view of measurement accuracy, model scaling, repeatability of the simulations, and computational efficiency.

Abstract:Provision of acceptable indoor air quality in multifamily buildings (MFBs) depends on the interior air flows that impact dilution of contaminants, cross-contamination between units and building energy use. The airtightness of interior partitions and design of ventilation systems in MFBs determine the flows across building partitions. These flows change the total ventilation rate for the building and individual units, and impact the mixing of air and contaminants between apartment units or with common spaces. This study examines the changes in air flow and contaminant transport in MFBs using combined CONTAM/EnergyPlus models. Key parameters were systematically varied, including climate, apartment airtightness, and mechanical ventilation system type. Simulations were performed for mid-rise buildings with and without an enclosed common corridor, and a 20-story high-rise building. Contaminants simulated in the analysis were PM 2.5 , formaldehyde, water vapor, and CO 2 . Key results of this work are that current airtightness requirements in ASHRAE 62.2 sufficiently limit transport of key contaminants, independent of the type of ventilation system across all three building typologies, and significantly reduce energy use in colder climates. The results of this work are intended to assist codes and standards bodies in setting appropriate airtightness limits and ventilation system design guidelines for MFBs.

Abstract:Controlling the spread of respiratory infections in healthcare settings is important to prevent nosocomial infections. To assess the effectiveness of commonly used techniques in the hospital for evaluating the performance of building retrofit to reducing the risk of nosocomial infection, we employed computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation, real-time carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) monitoring, microorganism culturing, and microorganism sequencing. These techniques can quantitatively assess the direct and indirect inhalation exposure risk of healthcare workers (HCWs) to infectious respiratory particles (IRPs) exhaled by patients in a hospital lung function room under two ventilation configurations. Originally, the ventilation system provided 2 air changes per hour (ACH) for clean air and 2 ACH for recirculated air. After retrofitting, the ventilation system was modified to increase clean air to 6 ACH and remove recirculated air. However, the assessment techniques yielded conflicting results regarding the percentage differences in exposure risk before and after the retrofit. The findings indicated that the retrofit system reduced indirect inhalation exposure risk, as estimated by real-time CO 2 monitoring and microorganism culture, by over 50.00%. However, the CFD simulation indicated an increase in inhalation exposure risk when 6 ACH of clean air was supplied. These results suggest that removing recirculated air and increasing the air change rate are effective in reducing long-range indirect inhalation exposure in the lung function room. However, they are insufficient to minimize the direct inhalation exposure of patients exhaling IRPs in close proximity. Given the conflicting results obtained from the commonly accepted techniques used in our study, it is necessary to provide a better understanding of infection control associated with the ventilation dilution of IRPs for hospital architects, hospital healthcare workers, and built-environment researchers.

Abstract:Indoor Air Quality (IAQ), energy efficiency through passive building design strategies and sustainable construction practices have been highly prioritized in recent years. This paper presents a Boundary Layer Wind Tunnel study on wind-driven natural ventilation for a low-rise building at a model-testing scale of 1:20. The experiment consists of testing various size openings in a single wall, opposite side walls and adjacent side walls with and without portioning walls, with and without opening cover screens, with and without internal volume correction for 36 different wind angles of attacks (unless symmetrical). For the size of the building and openings considered, the experimental analyses indicated that internal volume correction using velocity scaling was important, although this criterion could be relaxed for cross-ventilation with openings in opposite walls. The internal pressure due to cross-ventilation was 1.5–2.5 times higher for Ainlet/Aoutlet > 1 compared with ratios Ainlet/Aoutlet < 1. In general, the lower the opening ratio (or inlet to outlet ratio), the higher the pressure drop inside the building. For an equivalent opening ratio, openings on opposite-walls generated a higher pressure drop compared to openings on adjacent-walls. Room-partitioning significantly affected the distribution of internal pressures, and hence the pressure drop that favored the ventilation in each room for the considered partitioning case. In addition, the total discharge coefficient Cd_total and the ventilation rate Q/(VrA) increased with an increase of the opening ratio. The inlet discharge coefficients obtained in this experiment ranged from 0.65 to 1.08, similar to the results of various early studies.

Abstract:One of the key issues in architectural design and regional planning is to create a safe and comfortable outdoor building environment, which calls for more studies. Wind tunnel experiments and computational fluid dynamic (CFD) simulations are the primary methods for the current studies. The airflow and boundary conditions are controllable for the wind tunnel experiment, and the data is reliable. In most wind tunnel platforms, spires and roughness elements are applied to create the gradient wind of the atmospheric boundary layer, leading to the oversized, high construction cost, and complex operation. In this paper, in order to explore a simple method for measuring and studying the outdoor building wind environment using wind tunnels, a compact wind tunnel platform adopting grids with unequal spacing was designed and tested, based on the theoretical model of the atmospheric boundary layer. A comparison between the test results and the theoretical values indicated that this new wind tunnel platform could achieve a gradient wind field and is accessible in applying low-speed wind tunnels to the measurement and research of the building wind environment. The application case in a high-rise building of the central business district (CBD) region in Beijing, was presented in this paper. Compared with another analytical method, the CFD simulation, the compact wind tunnel revealed its applicability that could be used for predicting and evaluating the outdoor wind environment around the building. This compact wind tunnel is more flexible and convenient than the traditional ones, with a smaller size, easier construction and operation, and lower costs. Therefore, we suggest more applications of this compact wind tunnel platform in future experimental studies of outdoor wind environments.

Abstract:Building airtightness significantly impacts its energy use estimation. The fan pressurization test, outlined in ISO 9972, is the most commonly used assessment method. A crucial component is the zero-flow pressure difference, influenced only by wind and stack effects. The ISO 9972 mandates that the absolute value of this pressure difference be less than 5 Pa and the minimum pressure station be either 10 Pa or five times the zero-flow pressure difference. The rationale behind these constraints is not evident, often excluding high-rise and buildings in wind-prone areas from standardized testing. This research examines these ISO 9972 requirements, aiming to clarify their basis and propose alternatives. Equations were developed to connect airflow estimation error with the ratio of the measured pressure station to zero-flow pressure difference. The external pressure measurement location during the test was found pivotal in determining airflow errors due to ISO constraints. While existing constraints limit airflow errors in many scenarios, enhancements are possible. If ISO 9972 conditions are unfeasible, always maintaining a 10 Pa buffer across facades can contain maximum airflow errors. This study suggests an alternative constraint with a similar error range (about 15 %) to current ones, enabling standardized testing in environments where existing ISO conditions are unattainable.

Abstract:This work proposes a new model to evaluate the air changes per hour (ach) due to natural infiltrations in buildings. This modeling already exists at building scale, but the new model will implement the hourly ventilation load in a physical-based modeling for space heating and cooling in buildings at urban scale. The proposed improvement considers the wind and buoyancy effects in the calculation of hourly achs in a high-density urban context. A three-zone air flow lumped modeling is applied to describe the air flow in buildings; the air flow rate due to infiltrations is calculated depending only on leakages' characteristics and pressure variations in various climate conditions. The non-linear equations system of mass and energy conservation is solved by an iterative procedure using the Newton-Raphson numerical method. Besides, two different methodologies are compared to evaluate the external dynamic and static pressure conditions on building façades: experimental values (pressure coefficients Cp) and CFD simulations. For the latter, the air flow field in the urban canyons is described by the windy conditions and by imposing a temperature gradient due to solar irradiation between the windward and leeward facades. This methodology is applied to three urban canyons in Turin, with typical aspect ratios and orientations for some local climate conditions considering both heating and cooling seasons. Comparing the results of hourly ach obtained from the Cp method, the CFD technique allows to modulate the ach considering the impact of the canyon dimension, wind and buoyancy effect of non-isothermal condition, in varying the wind speed on the façades of buildings for different scenarios. It also overcomes the limit of field of applications of Cp, especially in high-density built urban environments. The encouraging results of this work will lead to future developments of the three-zone lumped model and its numerical solution techniques.

Abstract:Driven by wind and buoyancy effects in the urban environment, ventilation performance and pollutant transmission are highly related to human health. In order to investigate characteristics of the single-sided natural ventilation and interunit dispersion problem, this study conducted scaled outdoor experiments in summer and winter periods in two-dimensional street canyons. Tracer gas method was adopted to predict the ventilation rate and simulate the pollutant dispersion. It was found the ventilation performance of windward and leeward rooms showed different trends with wind velocities. Archimedes number Ar was used to examine the interactions of the buoyancy and the wind forces. It revealed that the non-dimensional ventilation rates of all rooms were generally smaller than the results of buoyancy effect only. It indicates that interactions between the buoyancy and wind effects were destructive, which reduced the ventilation rates. The interunit dispersion characteristics with the wind effect were highly dependent on source locations. The results of the tracer gas concentrations of the reentered rooms were not showing simple increasing or decreasing trends. This study provides authentic and instant airflow and pollutant dispersion information in an urban environment. The dataset of this experiment can offer validations for further numerical simulations.

Pollution of the environment and building interiors during asbestos removal as a result of lack of negative pressure in the working areas

Abstract:The paper presents examples of the consequences of the lack of negative pressure in the work zone during asbestos removal. The asbestos fibre concentrations generated in those work zones were relatively low. This was due to the leakage in barriers restricting the work zone. Therefore the asbestos content in the outside air, near the renovated rooms was increasing. In the cases discussed, these works resulted in short-term pollution of the building's outdoor air to a depth of up to 15 m. Such contamination can cover the entire interior of the building. This may lead to long-term retention of asbestos fibre in the facility, despite the completion of asbestos removal. For example, non-friable asbestos-cement sheets removal in those work conditions increased indoor air by contamination up to 3000 f/m3 (outside the work zone). In the case of removing friable asbestos inside the building type "LIPSK", indoor air contamination locally was up 21,000-51,000 f/m3, and outside the work zone to 18,000-28,900 f/m3. These values are above the average concentration of asbestos fibres in the same type of buildings (< 300-400 f/m3) in regular use.

Abstract:The objective of this study is to investigate the mechanism of inter-flat airborne disease transmission under the condition of single-sided natural ventilation. The focus is on one of the typical designs in residential buildings with a rectangular plan layout and having a common corridor separating the two sides, each of which has a flat façade with openable windows. When the wind speed is extremely low, with doors closed and windows opened, the flats become single-sided naturally ventilated driven by buoyancy effects. The air pollutants can travel from a lower flat to a vertically adjacent upper flat through open windows, caused by indoor/outdoor temperature-difference induced buoyancy. Computational fluid dynamics is employed to explore the characteristics of this process. Based on the comparison with experimental data about the air flow distribution in and around a single-sided naturally ventilated room, the renormalization group based k−ϵ model, together with carbon dioxide used as a tracer, is chosen to reveal this air cross-contamination. The simulation results are in agreement with our prior on-site tracer-gas measurements, revealing that the windows flush with a flat façade can be a major route of the air cross-contamination in high-rise residential buildings. Finally, an assessment index is proposed to evaluate the potential infection risks associated with this inter-flat air flow occurring in high-rise residential buildings.

Abstract:Aeraulic, air movement, and wind effects studies are of high importance when assessing building performances. Indeed, several studies have been conducted using wind tunnels to better understand aerodynamics inside and around buildings. The objective of this study is to accurately characterize the air velocity field inside the test chamber of a wind tunnel at different locations using the Hot-Wire-Anemometry technique and propose an experimental protocol to extend the use of wind tunnels to study mechanical ventilation systems' performances. To this end, a first intercomparing protocol involving six hot-wire anemometers was carried out to verify the accuracy of measurements. In addition, we have developed a CFD numerical model of the wind tunnel under the Ansys Fluent environment. Several turbulence models, numerical schemes, and mesh types were studied to analyze the air velocity distribution and identify the appropriate model fitting experimental results. As a result, the CFD model uses the Quadrilateral Structured Fine Mapped mesh, Standard k−ε as a turbulence model, and MUSCL as a discretization scheme with a relative error of 5.21% to experiment values. Both wind tunnel and its numerical model are designated to establish on-demand building and ventilation components performance assessment using a hybrid approach, numerical and experimental.

Abstract:This paper investigates air pollution dispersion and exposure time around a building in a turbulent flow via tracer gas techniques. In the wind tunnel experiments, the tracer gas as the air pollutant model was trapped around the building model and exposed to a boundary layer wind flow. First, flow visualisation was performed, illustrating the highly transient features of wind flow and air pollution dispersion process dominated by underlying wind-structure interaction mechanisms. Next, the concentration field was normalised, analysed and presented as a function of time around the building. Evidently, the stagnant air pollution shields from the wind flow in the building's wake, causing a much longer air pollutant exposure time compared to the regions near the windward and side faces. The air pollutant exposure time in the side region was longer than in the windward region, influenced by the separation-reattachment and bifurcating flow near the side and windward faces, respectively. These results are compiled in order to provide a validation database for similar CFD studies on exposure time. Also, the normalised air pollutant exposure time was scaled up and integrated with air pollutant concentration in the form of two new indices to establish a methodology for the interpretation of air pollutant exposure time in full-scale built-environment scenarios.

The present study investigates a novel approach to the control of ventilation, dynamically integrated with the use of air cleaning technology toward a substantial reduction of building energy/cost with cleaner indoor air than what the standard provides. To demonstrate the proposed methodology, a low energy office building was used as a testbed, subject to the variation of outdoor pollution due to nearby traffic. A detailed building model was constructed by utilizing DesignBuilder and ContamW based on the building design/actual construction documents for the analyses of combined IAQ and energy benefits. Target contaminants included formaldehyde, other 16 representative VOCs and CO2 for IAQ analysis. Dynamic profiles of outdoor pollution were based on actual monitoring data and EPA_2008_AirData. By setting up a suite of usage scenarios under four representative climate and outdoor air quality conditions throughout the U.S. including Syracuse (cool), Los Angeles (mild), Houston (cooling dominant) and Duluth (heating dominant), the approach of dynamic integration of ventilation and air cleaning was assessed. Results showed that the minimum ventilation rate requirements in ASHRAE 62.1-2010 might not be sufficient for meeting the exposure limit constraints for IAQ (especially for formaldehyde) at all times. The integration strategy would provide satisfactory IAQ, and also could bring most energy/cost benefits (∼11% annual savings) for the case building.

Abstract:The diffusion of air pollutants in urban areas is essentially a multiscale problem, which has aroused increasing concerns. Wind-tunnel experiments were employed to explore the characteristics of indoor/outdoor airflow and pollutant exchange in a building cluster. Under two wind directions (β = 0°,45°), smoke visualization tests were firstly conducted to visualize the diffusion characteristics of air pollutants released from different pollution sources. Then the 3D hot-film anemometer and SF6 quantitative detector were used to measure the turbulence parameters and pollutant distributions. The smoke visualization tests showed that under β = 0°, the pollutants were mainly concentrated in the middle main street canyons (S-1 and S-2), spread downstream, and were gradually diluted. However, the influence area under β = 45° was wider. The results confirmed that the indoor pollutant concentration along different floors was closely related to that around the outside target building. The window-opening mode had great influence on indoor pollutant concentration, but little influence on the other floors. Additionally, when the pollution source was located in the building leeward wake, regardless of the building height, it could reduce the indoor air quality of the leeward building. This study is helpful to understand the characteristics of flow and dispersion through different urban scales.

Abstract:Ventilation aims at providing a sufficient air renewal for ensuring a good indoor air quality (IAQ), yet building energy policies are leading to adapting various ventilation strategies minimising energy losses through air renewal. A recent IAQ evaluation campaign in French dwellings shows important pollution of living spaces by VOCs such as formaldehyde, acetaldehyde or hexanal, particularly in buildings equipped with a garage. Besides, radon emission from soil is a subject of concern in many countries. Several studies are done to understand its release mode and deal with the spread of this carcinogen gas. This paper aims to experimentally assess a contaminant spread from a house basement using mechanical exhaust and balanced ventilation systems, and natural ventilation.

Abstract:Objective: To present the initial experience of laparoendoscopic single-site (LESS) nephroureterectomy via the transperitoneal approach using the Alexis wound retractor and bladder cuff resection by endoloop. Methods: Two patients received LESS nephroureterectomies and bladder cuffs resection with homemade single ports, which were created by using an Alexis wound retractor as an access platform through a 4-cm incision. Distal ureters were resected through the same incision with endoloop. No additional ports were used and both procedures were completed successfully. Results: Both LESS procedures were completed successfully without traditional laparoscopic conversion or complication. LESS nephreoureterectomy with bladder cuff excision was performed in 165 and 325 minutes with estimated blood loss of 30 and 65 mL, respectively. Patients were discharged on postoperative days 3 and 7, respectively. Conclusions: The initial results demonstrated that LESS technique of nephroureterectomy and bladder cuff resection with endoloop is a safe and feasible procedure for urothelial carcinoma of upper urinary tract.

Abstract:Airflow and ventilation are particularly important in healthcare rooms for controlling thermo-hygrometric conditions, providing anaesthetic gas removal, diluting airborne bacterial contamination and minimizing bacteria transfer airborne. An actual hospitalization room was the investigate case study. Transient simulations with computational fluid dynamics (CFD), based on the finite element method (FEM) were performed to investigate the efficiency of the existing heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) plant with a variable air volume (VAV) primary air system. Solid modelling of the room, taking into account thermo-physical properties of building materials, architectural features (e.g., window and wall orientation) and furnishing (e.g., beds, tables and lamps) arrangement of the room, inlet turbulence high induction air diffuser, the return air diffusers and two patients lying on two parallel beds was carried out. Multiphysics modelling was used: a thermo-fluidynamic model (convection-conduction and incompressible Navier-Stokes) was combined with a convection-diffusion model. Three 3D models were elaborated considering different conditions/events of the patients (i.e., the first was considered coughing and/or the second breathing). A particle tracing and diffusion model, connected to cough events, was developed to simulate the dispersal of bacteria-carrying droplets in the isolation room equipped with the existing ventilation system. An analysis of the region of droplet fallout and the dilution time of bacteria diffusion of coughed gas in the isolation room was performed. The analysis of transient simulation results concerning particle path and distance, and then particle tracing combined with their concentration, provided evidence of the formation of zones that should be checked by microclimatic and contaminant control. The present study highlights the fact that the CFD-FEM application is useful for understanding the efficiency, adequacy and reliability of the ventilation system, but also provides important suggestions for controlling air quality, patients’ comfort and energy consumption in a hospital.
