Abstract:For most core-shell nanostructured Pt-based alloy electrocatalysts, the local environment and configuration of surface Pt layers are randomly generated, which would hinder the further improvement of the utilization, activity and stability of Pt atoms. Herein, we have selected AuCu alloys with different structural ordering as substrates and deposited a Pt shell on their surface via the precise control of replacing Cu with Pt atoms. Various physical and electrochemical characterizations indicate that the structural ordering of an AuCu core could influence the distribution of surface Pt atoms due to the rearrangement of surface atoms. After optimization, the obtained catalysts displayed a high mass activity (0.75 Amg(Pt)(-1)) and specific activity (0.491 mAcm(Pt)(-2)) for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), which were nearly 7.5 times and 3.6 times those of commercial Pt/C, respectively. In addition, the catalysts could also exhibit a high stability with a negligible activity decay after 10,000 cycles of accelerated durability tests (ADTs). The density functional theory (DFT) calculation reveals that the precisely controlled Pt local environment could lower the Gibbs free energy barrier for the rate-determining step of ORR more than a random distribution could, thus enhancing the catalytic performance of the prepared catalysts.
Quantifying multi-point ordering in alloys

Abstract:A central problem in multicomponent lattice systems is to systematically quantify multi-point ordering. Ordering in such systems is often described in terms of pairs, even though this is not sufficient when three-point and higher-order interactions are included in the Hamiltonian. Current models and parameters for multi-point ordering are often only applicable for very specific cases and/or require approximating a subset of correlated occupational variables on a lattice as being uncorrelated. In this work, a cluster order parameter (ClstOP) is introduced to systematically quantify arbitrary multi-point ordering motifs in substitutional systems through direct calculations of normalized cluster probabilities. These parameters can describe multi-point chemical ordering in crystal systems with multiple sublattices, multiple components, and systems with reduced symmetry. These are defined within and applied to quantify four-point chemical ordering motifs in platinum/palladium alloy nanoparticles that are practical interest to the synthesis of catalytic nanocages. Impacts of chemical ordering on alloy nanocage stability are discussed. It is demonstrated that approximating 4-point probabilities from superpositions of lower order pair probabilities is not sufficient in cases where 3 and 4-body terms are included in the energy expression. Conclusions about the formation mechanisms of nanocages may change significantly when using common pair approximations.
Modeling Realistic Structures of Trimetallic Nanoalloy Catalysts Using Chemically Meaningful Descriptors

Abstract:The computational design of alloy catalysts is hindered by the uncertainty in their structure and arrangement of constituent elements within the lattice of catalyst particles, i.e., their chemical ordering. Moreover, chemical ordering in alloy nanoparticles (nanoalloys) can be affected by the reaction temperature due to thermal disorder. In this study, we develop a method for realistic simulations of trimetallic alloy nanocrystallites with the lowest energy chemical ordering or chemical ordering taking into account thermal disorder in the nanoalloy. This method is based on Monte Carlo simulations using topological lattice Hamiltonian, whose parameters are fitted to the results of density functional (DFT) simulations of thoughtfully designed archetypal nanoalloy structures. The implementation of this method in Python code is freely available online. Using this method, we characterized chemical orderings in nanoparticles composed of 79 and 338 atoms of metals with known catalytic activity in CO2 hydrogenation, namely, Pd-Pt-Cu, Ni-Pd-Cu, and Co-Rh-Cu. Our simulations show that the thermal disorder in these alloys significantly affects the composition of surface sites. Such structural changes are demonstrated to affect the average binding energies of reaction intermediates to the catalyst surface by up to 1.1 eV, implying their critical effect on the alloy’s catalytic properties. Moreover, we demonstrate how the developed code can be used for brute-force evaluation of entropic contributions to mixing free energies in alloy nanoparticles. The demonstrated abilities of the proposed method to generate realistic models of trimetallic nanoalloys in a computationally efficient manner enable reliable simulations of catalytic properties of trimetallic catalysts for their in-depth understanding and computational design.

Abstract:Disordered solid‐solution high‐entropy alloys have attracted wide research attention as robust electrocatalysts. In comparison, ordered high‐entropy intermetallic alloys have been hardly explored and the effects of the degree of chemical ordering on catalytic activity remain unknown. In this study, a series of multi‐component intermetallic Pt4FeCoCuNi nanoparticles with tunable ordering degrees were fabricated. The transformation mechanism of multi‐component nanoparticles from the disordered structure into the ordered structure was revealed at the single‐particle level using aberration‐corrected STEM, which agrees with macroscopic analysis by SAED and XRD. The electrocatalytic performance of Pt4FeCoCuNi nanoparticles correlates well with their crystal structure and electronic structure. It was found that increasing the degree of order promotes electrocatalytic performance. The highly ordered Pt4FeCoCuNi achieves the highest mass activities towards both acidic oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) which are 18.9‐fold and 5.6‐fold higher than those of commercial Pt/C, respectively. The experiment also shows that this catalyst demonstrates better long‐term stability than both partially ordered and disordered Pt4FeCoCuNi as well as Pt/C when subject to both HER and ORR. This ordering‐dependent structure‐property relationship provides insight into the rational design of catalysts and stimulates the exploration of many other multi‐component intermetallic alloys. Quantifying chemical short-range order in metallic alloys

Abstract:Metallic alloys often form phases - known as solid solutions - in which chemical elements are spread out on the same crystal lattice in an almost random manner. The tendency of certain chemical motifs to be more common than others is known as chemical short-range order (SRO) and it has received substantial consideration in alloys with multiple chemical elements present in large concentrations due to their extreme configurational complexity (e.g., high-entropy alloys). Short-range order renders solid solutions "slightly less random than completely random", which is a physically intuitive picture, but not easily quantifiable due to the sheer number of possible chemical motifs and their subtle spatial distribution on the lattice. Here we present a multiscale method to predict and quantify the SRO state of an alloy with atomic resolution, incorporating machine learning techniques to bridge the gap between electronic-structure calculations and the characteristic length scale of SRO. The result is an approach capable of predicting SRO length scale in agreement with experimental measurements while comprehensively correlating SRO with fundamental quantities such as local lattice distortions. This work advances the quantitative understanding of solid-solution phases, paving the way for SRO rigorous incorporation into predictive mechanical and thermodynamic models.

Abstract:At the forefront of nanochemistry, there exists a research endeavor centered around intermetallic nanocrystals, which are unique in terms of long-range atomic ordering, well-defined stoichiometry, and controlled crystal structure. In contrast to alloy nanocrystals with no elemental ordering, it is challenging to synthesize intermetallic nanocrystals with a tight control over their size and shape. Here, recent progress in the synthesis of intermetallic nanocrystals with controllable sizes and well-defined shapes is highlighted. A simple analysis and some insights key to the selection of experimental conditions for generating intermetallic nanocrystals are presented, followed by examples to highlight the viable use of intermetallic nanocrystals as electrocatalysts or catalysts for various reactions, with a focus on the enhanced performance relative to their alloy counterparts that lack elemental ordering. Within the conclusion, perspectives on future developments in the context of synthetic control, structure-property relationships, and applications are discussed.
Chemical order-disorder nanodomains in Fe3Pt bulk alloy

Abstract:Chemical ordering is a common phenomenon and highly correlated with the properties of solid materials. By means of the redistribution of atoms and chemical bonds, it invokes an effective lattice adjustment and tailors corresponding physical properties. To date, however, directly probing the 3D interfacial interactions of chemical ordering remains a big challenge. In this work, we deciphered the interlaced distribution of nanosized domains with chemical order/disorder in Fe3Pt bulk alloy. HAADF-STEM images evidence the existence of such nanodomains. The reverse Monte Carlo method with the X-ray pair distribution function data reveal the 3D distribution of local structures and the tensile effect in the disordered domains at the single-atomic level. The chemical bonding around the domain boundary changes the bonding feature in the disordered side and reduces the local magnetic moment of Fe atoms. This results in a suppressed negative thermal expansion and extended temperature range in Fe3Pt bulk alloy with nanodomains. Our study demonstrates a local revelation for the chemical order/disorder nanodomains in bulk alloy. The understanding gained from atomic short-range interactions within the domain boundaries provides useful insights with regard to designing new functional compounds.
Tailoring Local Chemical Ordering via Elemental Tuning in High-Entropy Alloys

Abstract:Due to the large multi-elemental space desired for property screening and optimization, high-entropy alloys (HEAs) hold greater potential over conventional alloys for a range of applications, such as structural materials, energy conversion, and catalysis. However, the relationship between the HEA composition and its local structural/elemental configuration is not well understood, particularly in noble-metal-based HEA nanomaterials, hindering the design and development of nano-HEAs in energy conversion and catalysis applications. Herein, we determined precise atomic-level structural and elemental arrangements in model HEAs composed of RhPtPdFeCo and RuPtPdFeCo to unveil their local characteristics. Notably, by changing just one constituent element in the HEA (Rh to Ru), we found dramatic changes in the elemental arrangement from complete random mixing to a local single elemental ordering feature. Additionally, we demonstrate that the local ordering in RuPtPdFeCo can be further controlled by varying the Ru concentration, allowing us to toggle between local Ru clustering and distinct heterostructures in multicomponent systems. Overall, our study presents a practical approach for manipulating local atomic structures and elemental arrangements in noble-metal-based HEA systems, which could provide in-depth knowledge to mechanistically understand the functionality of noble-metal-based HEA nanomaterials in practical applications.
The phase stability of large-size nanoparticle alloy catalysts at ab initio quality using a nearsighted force-training approach

Abstract:CoPt nanoparticle catalysts are integral to commercial fuel cells. Such systems are prohibitive to fully characterize with electronic structure calculations. Machine-learned potentials offer a scalable solution; however, such potentials are only reliable if representative training data can be employed, which typically requires large electronic structure calculations. Here, we use the nearsighted-force training approach to make high-fidelity machine-learned predictions on large nanoparticles with $>$5,000 atoms using only systematically generated small structures ranging from 38-168 atoms. The resulting ensemble model shows good accuracy and transferability in describing relative energetics for CoPt nanoparticles with various shapes, sizes and Co compositions. It is found that the fcc(100) surface is more likely to form a L1$_0$ ordered structure than the fcc(111) surface. The energy convex hull of the icosahedron shows the most stable particles have Pt-rich skins and Co-rich underlayers. Although the truncated octahedron is the most stable shape across all sizes of Pt nanoparticles, a crossover to icosahedron exists due to a large downshift of surface energy for CoPt nanoparticle alloys. The downshift can be attributed to strain release on the icosahedron surface due to Co alloying. We introduced a simple empirical model to describe the role of Co alloying in the crossover for CoPt nanoparticles. With Monte-Carlo simulations we additionally searched for the most stable atomic arrangement for a truncated octahedron with equal Pt and Co compositions, and also we studied its order-disorder phase transition. We validated the most stable configurations with a new highly scalable density functional theory code called SPARC. Lastly, the order-disorder phase transition for a CoPt nanoparticle exhibits a lower transition temperature and a smoother transition, compared to the bulk CoPt alloy.

Abstract:Bulk Au-Fe alloys separate into Au-based fcc and Fe-based bcc phases, but L10 and L12 orderings were reported in single-phase Au-Fe nanoparticles. Motivated by these observations, we study the structural and ordering energetics in this alloy by combining density functional theory (DFT) calculations with effective Hamiltonian techniques: a cluster expansion with structural filters, and the configuration-dependent lattice deformation model. The phase separation tendency in Au-Fe persists even if the fcc-bcc decomposition is suppressed. The relative stability of disordered bcc and fcc phases observed in nanoparticles is reproduced, but the fully ordered L10 AuFe, L12Au3Fe, and L12AuFe3 structures are unstable in DFT. However, a tendency to form concentration waves at the corresponding [001] ordering vector is revealed in nearly random alloys in a certain range of concentrations. This incipient ordering requires enrichment by Fe relative to the equiatomic composition, which may occur in the core of a nanoparticle due to the segregation of Au to the surface. Effects of magnetism on the chemical ordering are also discussed.

Surface energies of stoichiometric FePt and CoPt alloys and their implications for nanoparticle morphologies

Abstract:We have calculated surface energies and surface magnetic order of various low-indexed surfaces of monoatomic Fe, Co, and Pt, and binary, ordered FePt, CoPt, and MnPt using density functional theory. Our results for the binary systems indicate that elemental, Pt-covered surfaces are preferred over Fe- and Co-covered and mixed surfaces of the same orientation. The lowest energy orientation for mixed surfaces is the highly coordinated (111) surface. We find Pt-covered (111) surfaces, which can be realized in the L11 structure only, to be lower in energy by about 400 meV/atom compared to the mixed L10 (111) surface. We conclude that this low surface energy stabilizes the L11 structure in small nanoparticles, which is suppressed in bulk alloys, but has been recently synthesized as thin film for CoPt. From the interplay of surface and bulk energies, equilibrium shapes of single-crystalline ordered nanoparticles and crossover sizes between the different orderings can be estimated.

Global Optimization of Cation Ordering in Perovskites by Recommendation-Based Basin-Hopping

Abstract:Cation ordering in multication perovskites is related to many important material properties and performances, but computational determination of the cation ordering remains a major challenge. Here, we propose a new computational approach by introducing a machine learning recommender system into the basin-hopping framework (RBH) for optimizing cation ordering. Taking the electrocatalyst Ba0.5Sr0.5Co0.8Fe0.2O3 (BSCF5582) as a showcase example, we found that the efficiency of RBH in identifying low-energy configurations outperforms the methods of cluster expansion and conventional basin-hopping. The RBH results revealed that the BSCF5582 catalyst tended to have a layered ordering of A-site cations and disordered B-site cations both in bulk and on the surfaces. Further, on the A-site-terminated surface, we found the segregation of large Ba atoms. Similarly, on the A-site- terminated surface of the recently developed Cs0.2Sr0.8Co0.4Fe0.6O3 (CSCF2846) catalyst, layered ordering at the A-site and surface enrichment of large Cs atoms were also found. The layered ordering was robust against thermal effects, as found from molecular dynamics simulations at 800 K. This work provides a new approach for thermodynamic global optimization of chemical ordering in multicomponent materials.
Exceptional enhancement of mechanical properties in high-entropy alloys via thermodynamically guided local chemical ordering

Abstract:Understanding the local chemical ordering propensity in random solid solutions, and tailoring its strength, can guide the design and discovery of complex, paradigm-shifting multicomponent alloys. First, we present a simple thermodynamic framework, based solely on binary enthalpies of mixing, to select optimal alloying elements to control the nature and extent of chemical ordering in high-entropy alloys (HEAs). Next, we couple high-resolution electron microscopy, atom probe tomography, hybrid Monte-Carlo, special quasirandom structures, and density functional theory calculations to demonstrate how controlled additions of Al and Ti and subsequent annealing drive chemical ordering in nearly random equiatomic face-centered cubic CoFeNi solid solution. We establish that short-range ordered domains, the precursors of long-range ordered precipitates, inform mechanical properties. Specifically, a progressively increasing local order boosts the tensile yield strengths of the parent CoFeNi alloy by a factor of four while also substantially improving ductility, which breaks the so-called strength–ductility paradox. Finally, we validate the generality of our approach by predicting and demonstrating that controlled additions of Al, which has large negative enthalpies of mixing with the constituent elements of another nearly random body-centered cubic refractory NbTaTi HEA, also introduces chemical ordering and enhances mechanical properties.

Au composition dependent order-disorder transitions of Fe−Pt intermetallic compounds: experiments and thermodynamic analysis

Abstract:The Fe−Pt intermetallic nanocrystals exhibit good chemical stability, unique magnetic and catalytic properties, but suffer from the ordering difficulty. It has been found that the addition of Au can promote the disorder-order transitions, but the mechanism is far from being well understood. In this work, the phase equilibria and phase transformations of the Fe−Pt−Au alloys have been experimentally investigated and thermodynamically analyzed. The results show that the driving forces for both the L 1 0 _FePt and L 1 2 _FePt 3 ordering are so weak that the homogeneous nucleation in the disordered fcc matrix is difficult, while a heterogeneous nucleation mechanism on the pre-existed phase boundary is preferred. On the other hand, there exists a metastable ternary miscibility gap between αAu and fcc-FePt or fcc-FePt 3 , and accordingly, when Au content is properly designed in the spinodal region, the enrichment of Au can take place spontaneously throughout a fcc Fe−Pt−Au structure during annealing. The segregation of αAu in the Fe−Pt−Au alloys can further accelerate the diffusion of Pt and Fe atoms, facilitate the nucleation of the ordered L 1 0 _FePt and L 1 2 _FePt 3 phases, and stimulate the ordering process. These results correlate the Au addition with the ordering of Fe−Pt intermetallics and further the magnetic and catalytic properties, and it is thus expected to provide guidance for a rational alloy design of Fe–Pt–Au materials.

Abstract:We introduce a computational method for global optimization of structure and ordering in atomic systems. The method relies on interpolation between chemical elements, which is incorporated in a machine-learning structural fingerprint. The method is based on Bayesian optimization with Gaussian processes and is applied to the global optimization of Au-Cu bulk systems, Cu-Ni surfaces with CO adsorption, and Cu-Ni clusters. The method consistently identifies low-energy structures, which are likely to be the global minima of the energy. Structure, short-range order, and phase stability of the Al$_x$CrFeCoNi high-entropy alloy: Insights from a perturbative, DFT-based analysis

Abstract:We study the phase behaviour of the Al$_x$CrFeCoNi high-entropy alloy. Our approach is based on a perturbative analysis of the internal energy of the paramagnetic solid solution as evaluated within the Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker formulation of density functional theory, using the coherent potential approximation to average over disorder. Via application of a Landau-type linear response theory, we infer preferential chemical orderings directly. In addition, we recover a pairwise form of the alloy internal energy suitable for study via atomistic simulations, which in this work are performed using the nested sampling algorithm, which is well-suited for studying complex potential energy surfaces. When the underlying lattice is fcc, at low concentrations of Al, depending on the value of $x$, we predict either an $\mathrm{L}1_2$ or $\mathrm{D}0_{22}$ ordering emerging below approximately 1000 K. On the other hand, when the underlying lattice is bcc, consistent with experimental observations, we predict $\mathrm{B}2$ ordering temperatures higher than the melting temperature of the alloy, confirming that this ordered phase forms directly from the melt. For both fcc and bcc systems, chemical orderings are dominated by Al moving to one sublattice, Ni and Co the other, while Cr and Fe remain comparatively disordered. On the bcc lattice, our atomistic modelling suggests eventual decomposition into $\mathrm{B}2$ NiAl and Cr-rich phases. These results shed light on the fundamental physical origins of atomic ordering tendencies in these intriguing materials.

However, the crystal structures of these NPs cannot be determined by the usual crystallographic techniques. Instead, high-energy X-ray diffraction structure factors were fitted by using the reverse Monte Carlo (RMC) method. Three-dimensional (3D) configuration models of Ir x Cu1–x solid-solution alloy NPs indicated spherical, highly disordered atomic configurations, with random mixing of Cu and Ir atoms. 3D local structures of the NPs were investigated via persistence diagrams (PDs) and bond orientational orders (BOOs). PDs of RMC NP models exhibited a broad distribution with very small “death” values along the diagonal and no vertical profile, which would indicate network formation. PDs of Ir x Cu1–x NPs also confirmed the absence of cavities or voids. The q 4 and q 6 BOO parameters for Ir and Cu in the RMC NP models had a broad distribution, unlike that for ideal NP models. The BOO parameter P BOO provided compelling evidence for the contribution of the local structure and the lower coordination numbers. This enabled the availability of active sites on the Ir x Cu1–x NP surface, enhancing the oxygen-evolution reaction.

Abstract:We study the phase behaviour of the Al x CrFeCoNi high-entropy alloy. Our approach is based on a perturbative analysis of the internal energy of the paramagnetic solid solution as evaluated within the Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker formulation of density functional theory, using the coherent potential approximation to average over disorder. Via application of a Landau-type linear response theory, we infer preferential chemical orderings directly. In addition, we recover a pairwise form of the alloy internal energy suitable for study via atomistic simulations, which in this work are performed using the nested sampling algorithm, which is well-suited for studying complex potential energy surfaces. When the underlying lattice is fcc, at low concentrations of Al, depending on the value of x , we predict either an L1 2 or D0 22 ordering emerging below approximately 1000 K. On the other hand, when the underlying lattice is bcc, consistent with experimental observations, we predict B2 ordering temperatures higher than the melting temperature of the alloy, confirming that this ordered phase forms directly from the melt. For both fcc and bcc systems, chemical orderings are dominated by Al moving to one sublattice, Ni and Co the other, while Cr and Fe remain comparatively disordered. On the bcc lattice, our atomistic modelling suggests eventual decomposition into B2 NiAl and Cr-rich phases. These results shed light on the fundamental physical origins of atomic ordering tendencies in these intriguing materials.

Abstract:The ever-growing push for sustainable energy has intensified research on catalytic science. Significant developments have been achieved in state-of-the-art catalyst design from the perspective of catalyst materials. Further promotion can be enabled when rethinking and redesigning the catalyst structure with long-range ordering rather than limited to the catalyst material design. Recently, ordered assembled nanostructures have shown advantages over their disordered counterparts in active site exposure and mass transfer. In this opinion article, we revisit and relate orderly assembly to entropy reduction. Recent advances in the engineering of ordered nanostructure assemblies and their applications in electrocatalysis are highlighted, along with discussions of the mechanism of ordering effects. Finally, future research opportunities are provided to encourage further developments in the construction and application of ordered nanostructure assemblies.
