Abstract:The adsorption behavior of CO on bimetallic Ni/Cu(110) surfaces has been studied experimentally by thermal-desorption spectroscopy and theoretically by density-functional theory (DFT) calculations. The bimetallic surfaces were produced either by evaporation of nickel or by decomposition of Ni(CO)4 on Cu(110). Adsorption of CO at 180 K on such a bimetallic surface yields three new adsorption states with adsorption energies between that of CO on clean Cu(110) and clean Ni(110). The new desorption peaks from the bimetallic surface, designated as β1-β3, can be observed at 250, 300, and 360 K, respectively. These new states are most pronounced when 12 monolayer of nickel is present on the copper surface. DFT calculations, using the Vienna ab initio simulation package code, were performed to identify the most probable Ni/Cu atomic arrangements at the bimetallic surface to reconcile with the experimental results. It turned out that CO adsorption on nickel dimers consisting of in-surface and adjacent subsurface atoms can best explain the observed experimental data. The result shows that CO adsorption is determined by local (geometric) effects rather than by long-range (electronic) effects. These findings should contribute to a better understanding of tailoring catalytic processes with the help of bimetallic catalysts.

Novel Structures of Co-Cu Bimetallic Clusters and Their Magnetic Properties

Abstract:The structural and magnetic properties of Co$_{18-m}$Cu$_m$ ($0\leq m\leq 18$) clusters are investigated with a genetic algorithm and a $spd$-band model Hamiltonian in the unrestricted Hartree-Hock approximation respectively. In general, Cu atoms tend to occupy the surface, while Co atoms prefer to the interior of the clusters. Layered structures appear in some clusters with given stoichiometric compositions. The introduction of Cu atoms leads to large increase of the magnetic moment of Co-rich circumstance and nearly zero magnetism of the Cu-rich ambient. The interaction between Cu and Co atoms induces nonzero magnetic moment for Cu atoms. The total magnetic moments tend to decrease with the increase of Cu atoms. However, some particular large magnetic moment are found to be closely related to the structures. The environment of Cu and Co atoms have a dominant effect on the magnetism of the cluster.
Surface energies of stoichiometric FePt and CoPt alloys and their implications for nanoparticle morphologies

Abstract:We have calculated surface energies and surface magnetic order of various low-indexed surfaces of monoatomic Fe, Co, and Pt, and binary, ordered FePt, CoPt, and MnPt using density functional theory. Our results for the binary systems indicate that elemental, Pt-covered surfaces are preferred over Fe- and Co-covered and mixed surfaces of the same orientation. The lowest energy orientation for mixed surfaces is the highly coordinated (111) surface. We find Pt-covered (111) surfaces, which can be realized in the L11 structure only, to be lower in energy by about 400 meV/atom compared to the mixed L10 (111) surface. We conclude that this low surface energy stabilizes the L11 structure in small nanoparticles, which is suppressed in bulk alloys, but has been recently synthesized as thin film for CoPt. From the interplay of surface and bulk energies, equilibrium shapes of single-crystalline ordered nanoparticles and crossover sizes between the different orderings can be estimated.

Abstract:In the present work, we synthesized the Cu-doped CoFe2O4 (Co1-xCuxFe2O4) nanoparticles with × = 0.0, 0.2, 0.4 and 0.6, by employing the citrate precursor method. The X-ray Diffraction (XRD) pattern confirmed the pure cubic structure formation with the Fd-3m space group. To know the structural purity of each sample as well as the distribution of cations, Rietveld refinement was carried out. The crystallite size increases from 39.55 nm to 41.80 nm upto x = 0.2 and with further doping of Cu2+ ions it decreases to 36.27 nm. Similar variation is observed in the lattice parameter where the value of ‘ a ’ first increases from 8.378 Å to 8.381 Å and then decreases to 8.377 Å. The development of a non-uniform grain is seen using scanning electron microscope (SEM), which reveals the reduction in grain size. Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) showed the two peaks v 1 and v 2 for all the samples around 541 cm−1 and 408 cm−1, respectively, which further decreases to 532.5 cm−1 and 402.5 cm−1 as the dopant ion concentration increases. The Stiffness constant, and Elastic modulus decrease with doping whereas, the Poisson’s ratio and Pugh’s ratio show a constant value of around 0.249 and 1.660, respectively. Vibrating Sample Magnetometer (VSM) analysis shows a decrease in saturation magnetization ( σ s ) value from 76.85 emu/g to 43.62 emu/g. The net magnetic moment ( n B ) decreases from 3.29 μ B to 1.85 μ B and the effective anisotropy constant value decreases from 10.672erg/g to 4.461erg/g. Thus, the prepared nanoparticles provide a way forward for their industrial applications.

Abstract:A new type of fluorescent probes for thiophenols, 6HQM-DNP and 7HQM-DNP, containing 6- or 7-hydroxy quinonlinium as fluorophore and 2,4-dinitrophenoxy (DNP) as nucleophilic recognition unit were constructed. As ethers, these non-fluorescent probe molecules can release the corresponding fluorescent quinolinium (6HQM and 7HQM) through aromatic nucleophilic substitution (S(N)Ar) by thiolate anions from thiophenols. The sensing reaction is highly sensitive (detection limit of 8 nM for 7HQM-DNP) and highly selective to thiophenols over aliphatic thiols and other nucleophiles under neutral conditions (pH 7.3). The probes respond rapidly to thiophenols, with second-order rate constants k=45 M(-1) s(-1) for 7HQM-DNP and 24 M(-1) s(-1) for 6HQM-DNP. Furthermore, the selective detection of thiophenols in living cells by 7HQM-DNP was demonstrated by confocal fluorescence imaging. In addition, these quinolinium salts show excellent chemical and thermal stability. In conclusion, this type of probes may find use in the detection of thiophenols in environmental samples and biosystems.
Electronic and magnetic properties of multishell Co nanowires coated with Cu

Abstract:The structural, electronic, and magnetic properties of ultrathin Cu-coated Co nanowires have been studied by using empirical genetic algorithm simulations and a tight-binding $spd$ model Hamiltonian in the unrestricted Hartree-Hock approximation. For some specific stoichiometric compositions, Cu atoms occupy the surface, while Co atoms prefer to stay in the interior, forming the perfect coated multishell structures. The outer Cu layers lead to substantial variations of the magnetic moment of interior Co atoms, depending on the structure and thickness of Cu layers. In particular, single Co atom row in the center of nanowire is found to be nonmagnetic when coated with two Cu layers. All the other Co nanowires in the coated Cu shell are still magnetic but the magnetic moments are reduced as compared with Co nanowires without Cu coating. The interaction between Cu and Co atoms induces nonzero magnetic moment for Cu atoms.

Abstract:The short/long-range order formation in Fe1-x-Cox (x < 0.3) alloys has been studied by the nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) technique, as well as ab initio based atomistic simulation. The NMR measurements show up the formation of a certain short-range order (SRO) in dilute limit above the Curie temperature TC and of the D03-type SRO (with the dominance of 3rd Co-Co nearest neighbors) in the concentration range 0.2 < x < 0.3 after quenching and subsequent annealing in the ferromagnetic state. The results of Monte Carlo simulations of binary Fe-Co alloys with ab initio interatomic interactions predict SRO in agreement with the experiment for small concentrations of Co (CCo< 0.1), while the B2-type ordering is preferable in binary alloy in the ferromagnetic state. We demonstrate that the presence of point defects (vacancies, interstitial) can change essentially the ordering in alloys with the Co content 20-30% and result in the D03-type SRO formation in a reasonable agreement with the experiment.

Abstract:Dynamic restructuring of Cu electrode has been observed under electrochemical conditions, and it has been hypothesized to underly the unique reactivity of Cu towards CO2 electroreduction. Surface roughening is one of the key surface phenomena to Cu activation, in which the surface forms numerous atomic vacancies and adatoms. However, the atomic structure of such surface motifs, in the presence of relevant adsorbates has remained elusive. Here, we explore the chemical space of Cu surface restructuring under coverage of CO and H in realistic electroreduction conditions, by a combination of grand canonical density functional theory and global optimization techniques, from which we construct a potential-dependent grand canonical ensemble representation of the surface. Significant vertical displacement of surface Cu atoms is observed in the regime of intermediate and mixed CO and H coverage. This regime, while predicted to be thermodynamically inaccessible, is kinetically controlled, presenting a tough challenge for theory. To investigate the kinetic trapping effects, we develop a quasi-kinetic Monte Carlo simulation to track the evolution of the system during a simulated cathodic scan. The simulation reveals the path that the system takes across the coverage space and the metastable structures that the system evolves into along the way. Chemical bonding analysis is performed on the metastable structures with elevated Cu*CO species to understand its formation mechanism. By molecular dynamics simulations and free energy calculations, the surface chemistry of the Cu*CO species is explored, and we identifies potential mechanisms via which the Cu*CO species may diffuse or dimerize. This work provides rich atomistic insights into the surface roughening phenomenon and the structure of the involved species. It also features generalizable methods to explore the chemical space of restructuring surfaces with mixed adsorbates, and its evolution in non-equilibrium.

Single Atom Substituents in Copper Surfaces May Adsorb Multiple CO Molecules

Abstract:Copper is a good CO2 electroreduction catalyst as products beyond CO form, but efficiency and selectivity is low. Experiments have shown that admixture of other elements can help, and computational screening studies have pointed out various promising candidates based on the adsorption of a single CO molecule as a descriptor. Our calculations of CO adsorption on surfaces where a first row transition metal atom replaces a Cu atom show that multiple CO molecules, not just one, bind to the substitutional atom. For Fe, Co, and Ni atoms, a decrease in binding energy is found, but the reverse trend, namely increasing bond strength, is found for V, Cr, and Mn and the first three CO molecules. Magnetic moment, charge, and position of the substitutional atom are also strongly affected by the CO adsorption in most cases. Magnetic moment is stepwise reduced to zero, and the outward displacement of the substitutional atom increased.

Abstract:LaCoO3 (LCO) nanoparticles were synthesized and their magnetic and structural properties were examined using SQUID magnetometery and neutron diffraction. The nanoparticles exhibit ferromagnetic long-range order beginning at T_C approximately 87K that persists to low temperatures. This behavior is contrasted with the ferromagnetism of bulk LCO, which also starts at T_C approximately 87K but is suppressed below a second transition at T_o approximately 37K, due to a structural phase transition. The ferromagnetism in both systems is attributed to the tensile stress from particle surfaces and impurity phase interfaces. This stress locally increases the Co-O-Co bond angle gamma, and competes with the thermal contraction of the lattice. It has recently been shown that LCO loses long-range ferromagnetic order when gamma decreases below the critical value gamma_c = 162.8 degrees. Consistent with this model, we show that gamma in nanoparticles remains larger than gamma_c at low temperatures, likely a consequence of all spins being in close proximity to surfaces or interfaces.

Abstract:The ordered structure of binary alloy nanoparticles determines their magnetic and catalytic characteristics. In the alloys after annealing, one of the components preferentially segregates on the surface to reduce surface energy. This surface segregation has been known as a factor in the construction of an ordered phase near the surface. However, the segregation-induced ordering has not been observed for nanoparticles. Here, platinum@cobalt (Pt@Co) core-shell nanoparticles were synthesized, and their structural changes after annealing at 600{\deg}C, 700{\deg}C, and 800{\deg}C for 3 hours were observed by a scanning transmission electron microscope. We discovered an L10-PtCo structure near the surface at 700{\deg}C, which was unexpected given the initial Pt:Co ratio of about 4:1. The L10-PtCo structure was considered to form due to surface segregation of Pt atoms and diffusion insufficient to mix Pt and Co atoms in the particle overall because the structure did not form at 600{\deg}C and 800{\deg}C.
Formation mechanism of Fe atomic structures on Cu(111) surfaces

Abstract:Magnetic nanostructures are of current interest due to the rich emerging physics and potential applications. With the advance of modern growth and imaging techniques, it is now possible to fabricate structures down to the atomic level. Atomic manipulation through scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) provides an interesting way for creating structures in a designed fashion and investigating their physics. Alternatively, self-assembly growth is appealing especially for potential applications as the structures can be fabricated more economically and in relatively large-scale homogeneity. This paper presents a joint experimental and theoretical study of the self organization of Fe atomic structures on Cu(111) surfaces. A few percent monolayer of Fe atoms are deposited at around 5 K on a clean Cu(111) surface. Upon deposition, the Fe atoms are randomly distributed on the sample surface without apparent ordering. With annealing to 12 K, the Fe atoms form ordered structures on both flat and vicinal surfaces with chosen coverage. On the flat surfaces, quasi-ordered hexagonal superlattice with nearest neighbor distance of 1.2+0.1 nm is found. In combination with the kinetic Monte Carlo (KMC) simulations, two essential criterions are identified for the formation of the hexagonal superlattice: the ratio between the interaction energy and the diffusion barrier needs to be larger than 5% and the ratio between the position of the energy maximum and the position of the first energy minimum to be smaller than 20%.

Abstract:We report density functional theory plus exact diagonalization of the multi-orbital Anderson impurity model calculations for the Co adatom on the top of Cu(001) surface. For the Co atom $d$-shell occupation $n_d \approx$ 8, a singlet many-body ground state and Kondo resonance are found, when the spin-orbit coupling is included in the calculations. The differential conductance is evaluated in a good agreement with the scanning tuneling microscopy measurements. The results illustrate the essential role which the spin-orbit coupling is playing in a formation of Kondo singlet for the multi-orbital impurity in low dimensions.

Unraveling the Surface Structure of Ceria-Supported Bimetal Co–Cu Nanoparticles

Abstract:Bimetallic catalysts typically exhibit superior activity and selectivity compared to single-component catalysts when optimized, inspiring a detailed understanding of the properties of the complex system. Herein, we employed high-resolution X-ray (including synchrotron-based) photoelectron spectroscopy and infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy measurements using CO as the probing molecule to investigate the surface structure of ceria-supported CoCu bimetallic nanoparticles. We found that Co deposition on a Cu-precovered CeO2 surface induces Cu migration to the surface, accompanied by ceria reduction and interfacial Co/CeO2 formation. The lower surface energy of copper than that of cobalt and the stronger interaction of CeO2 with Co than with Cu are possibly responsible for this surface dynamic evolution. This surface structure can be modulated by the introduction of oxygen. A small amount of oxygen exposure effectively promotes the reconstruction of the surface structure by Co migration to the surface of Co/Cu/CeO2, forming cobalt oxides. Our combined spectroscopic results provide direct evidence of the surface structure evolution of CeO2-supported bimetallic nanoparticles under certain conditions.

Abstract:Fe, Cu atoms and CO molecules were manipulated with a scanning tunneling microscope (STM) on a Ag(110) surface, and one or two CO can transfer from the surface and bond with a metal atom through the STM tip [H. J. Lee and W. Ho, Science 286, 1719 (1999); Phys. Rev. B 61, R16347 (2000)]. We perform a density-functional cluster model investigation for the systems. The experimental geometries are validated and understood using the frontier orbital theory. The STM topographic images are reproduced. The vibrational frequencies of the adsorbate systems are obtained by diagonalizing the second-derivative matrices and are in excellent agreement with the experimental measurements. The geometries and C-O stretch frequencies are predicted for systems with the adsorbate metal atom being Co, Ni, Zn, and Ag. These systems can be divided to two classes, and each class exhibits a different set of properties.
Coupling of Cobalt–Tetraphenylporphyrin Molecules to a Copper Nitride Layer

Abstract:For applications such as molecular electronics and spintronics, it is very important to accurately describe the interface between molecular species and the underlying surfaces. In this work, we have used low temperature scanning tunneling microscopy to study the physical and chemical interaction between individual cobalt tetraphenylporphyrin molecules and a copper nitride monolayer. We have demonstrated that the Cu3N-Cu(110) system promotes a selective decoupling of the porphyrin macrocycle from the local environment, allowing visualization of the molecular orbitals and vibronic states of the molecule, while maintaining a strong coupling between the Co-d(z)(2) orbital and the substrate. The reverse behavior was observed for adsorption of the same molecule onto a metallic Cu(110) surface. First-principles calculations confirm both the molecular adsorption site and the electronic decoupling of the molecular states from the substrate.
Electronic states and magnetic structure at the Co3O4 (110) surface: a first principles study

Abstract:Tricobalt tetraoxide (Co3O4) is an important catalyst and Co3O4(110) is a frequently exposed surface in Co3O4 nanomaterials. We employed Density-functional theory with on-site Coulomb repulsion U term to study the atomic structures, energetics, magnetic and electronic properties of the two possible terminations, A and B, of this surface. These calculations predict A as the stable termination in a wide range of oxygen chemical potentials, consistent with recent experimental observations. The Co3+ ions do not have a magnetic moment in the bulk, but become magnetic at the surface, which leads to surface magnetic orderings different from the one in the bulk. Surface electronic states are present in the lower half of the bulk band gap and cause partial metallization of both surface terminations. These states are responsible for the charge compensation mechanism stabilizing both polar terminations. The computed critical thickness for polarity compensation is 4 layers.

Abstract:Using microemulsion methods, CoO-Pt core-shell nanoparticles (NPs), with diameters of nominally 4 nm, were synthesized and characterized by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and a suite of x-ray spectroscopies, including diffraction (XRD), absorption (XAS), absorption near-edge structure (XANES), and extended absorption fine structure (EXAFS), which confirmed the existence of CoO cores and pure Pt surface layers. Using a commercial magnetometer, the ac and dc magnetic properties were investigated over a range of temperature (2 K $\leq$ T $\leq$ 300 K), magnetic field ($\leq$ 50 kOe), and frequency ($\leq$ 1 kHz). The data indicate the presence of two different magnetic regimes whose onsets are identified by two maxima in the magnetic signals, with a narrow maximum centered at 6 K and a large one centered at 37 K. The magnetic responses in these two regimes exhibit different frequency dependences, where the maximum at high temperature follows a Vogel-Fulcher law, indicating a superparamagnetic (SPM) blocking of interacting nanoparticle moments and the maximum at low temperature possesses a power law response characteristic of a collective freezing of the nanoparticle moments in a superspin glass (SSG) state. This co-existence of blocking and freezing behaviors is consistent with the nanoparticles possessing an antiferromagnetically ordered core, with an uncompensated magnetic moment, and a magnetically disordered interlayer between CoO core and Pt shell.
