Abstract:Objective. To develop a hospital-based pharmacy internship program in a comprehensive cancer care center in Jordan and review its outcomes over a 10-year period.Methods. King Hussein Cancer Center developed a two-year internship program for pharmacy students in Jordanian universities. The program included training in operational and clinical settings during the academic year and school holidays. In addition, the students completed rotation-related assignments and met weekly with the program director. During the rotations and at the end of the program, interns were asked to assess their level of satisfaction with the program and to comment on its content and structure. Results. From a pilot phase with only three interns and a simple training structure, the two-year internship program has become more structured now training six interns annually. During the first 10 years of the program, 51 students from four universities in Jordan enrolled in the program, with six current interns, 34 graduates, and 11 withdrawals. Graduates reported improved academic performance and satisfaction with the program's structure and the skills obtained. Their main challenge was time management during the academic year. Conclusion. A hospital-based pharmacy internship program is feasible and sustainable. Participation in the program improves interns' academic performance and clinical and professional skills, despite the challenges of highly demanding conditions on both the hospital and the students.

Abstract:Academic Entitlement (AE) is the expectation by students to receive high grades or preferential treatment without significant effort. Exploring AE from faculty perspective has not been investigated in Arab colleges of pharmacy. The aim of this study was to explore experiences and perceptions towards student AE among pharmacy faculty in the Arab World. A cross-sectional, self-administered, anonymous, electronic survey was sent to pharmacy faculty across pharmacy colleges in Arab countries. The survey collected demographic data, an AE measure including 17 items reflecting seven AE components, and faculty perceptions and perceived reasons for AE. A total of 345 responses were collected. The AE level was moderate (46.05 ±7.29), and the highest scores among its components were for customer service expectation (62%) and responsibility avoidance (59%). In multiple linear regression, AE showed positive significant association with faculty in clinical pharmacy departments and those having fewer years of experience. Most common complaints heard by faculty from students were requests to turn in assignments late (90%), while the most common communication issues faculty faced with students were unprofessional verbal communication (58%) and unprofessional messages on social media (57%). Poor admission criteria (40%) and existence of multiple private colleges of pharmacy (37%) were the most common perceived reasons for AE by participating faculty. This study reveals moderate AE experienced by pharmacy faculty in the Arab World, as well as common complaints, communication issues, and AE reasons. In collaboration with other stakeholders, faculty play an important role in indicating expectations from students regarding AE, and research is warranted to check if such interventions reduce AE among pharmacy students.

Abstract:Background: Participation in international experiences can promote personal and professional growth, but students in schools of pharmacy may face barriers in pursuing overseas experiences. Objectives: The objectives of this report are to describe the design, implementation, and student perceptions of an online course co-taught by two schools of pharmacy in different countries for students at both institutions. Methods: The course was established through an ongoing partnership between the universities and was focused on diabetes based on mutual interest and expertise. The course was offered in a three-hour period weekly using short lectures, small group discussions and projects. Results: Cross-cultural learning was emphasised by forming student groups with representation from both universities. In a post-course survey and reflection, students reported gaining new knowledge, perspectives, and transferable skills as a result of the international nature of the course. Conclusion: The online international course broadened students’ views of pharmacists’ roles and strengthened the partnership between the two universities.

Abstract:The commitment of pharmacy graduates to patient care and research is crucial to advancing pharmaceutical science and practice. Consequently, the value of involving undergraduate pharmacy students in research has been increasingly recognized. Given that the College of Pharmacy at Qatar University offers two undergraduate pharmacy research courses, it is relevant to explore the perception of faculty members of the delivery, impact, facilitators, barriers, and suggested improvements in these courses. This exploration will help to improve the existing curriculum and to highlight the prospective impact of student involvement in undergraduate pharmacy research courses on the personal and professional growth of students, as well as on the progressive evolution of the pharmacy profession. A qualitative exploratory case study was performed in which five virtual focus groups were conducted. All eligible faculty members from the clinical pharmacy and pharmaceutical science departments with experience supervising students who had taken one or two undergraduate pharmacy research courses were invited to participate. The focus group questions were based on the Theoretical domain framework of behavioral determinants. Verbatim transcription was performed, and the collected data were thematically analyzed using the computer-assisted coding software NVivo®. Of the 26 eligible faculty members, 21 participated in this study. Five deductive themes were identified: social professional role and influences, beliefs about capabilities, skills, beliefs about consequences and goals, and environmental resources and behavioral regulations. Overall, faculty members identified themselves as assessors and mentors. Participants expected students to possess independence, responsibility, and motivation. They believed that students generally required more practical research skills. Several benefits of incorporating students into undergraduate research have been highlighted, including increased publication productivity and quality. However, several hurdles to undergraduate research in pharmacy have been identified, including limited resources, limited timeframes, and sometimes delayed ethical approval. Faculty members expressed optimism regarding the undergraduate research courses. However, some logistical concerns, including the lengthy ethical approval process and resource availability, must be addressed to optimize the effectiveness of these courses.

Abstract:Introduction Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) programs offer students' academic coursework and Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experiences (APPEs). APPEs are crucial for students, providing hands-on training in practice settings and enhancing clinical skills and decision-making abilities, nevertheless, successful APPEs relies mainly on preceptorship. Hence, this study aims to evaluate preceptorship during APPEs in one of the non-major cities in Saudi Arabia. Method A Cross-Sectional survey study was conducted among 40 PharmD students at Taibah University's College of Pharmacy which involved two telephone interviews conducted seven months apart. The survey instrument consisted of 46 questions divided into eight sections which covered various aspects such as demographics, clarity of rotation objectives, clinical and communication skills, assessment of the training and learning opportunities, preceptors' feedback and evaluation, interaction with patients, healthcare providers, and preceptors. Descriptive statistics and Cronbach's alpha coefficient were utilized to analyze the collected data and to assess the internal consistency of the multi-item Likert questions. Results Preceptors were predominantly male, aged 26-35, with extensive experience in pharmacy practice and mentorship, yet they lacked specialized post-graduate training or education certification. Almost 50% of the preceptors exhibited competence in pharmacotherapy-related science demonstrated a willingness to teach students and acknowledged the students' knowledge and skills. Furthermore, most of the students reported understanding of the APPEs objectives as the internship progressed. However, only 15% of late rotation participants strongly agreed on the safety of the learning environment, adequate time and regular contact with their preceptors. Starkly, only 3.0% of early rotation students and 6.1% of late rotation students strongly agreed with the improvement of their written and verbal communications. Conclusion This study reported a noted decline in perceived learning support and environment safety as the APPEs' year progressed. Feedback and communication skills development were areas of concern, with limited satisfaction reported. The study highlights regional disparities in training quality, emphasizing the need for structured learning experiences and re-evaluation of preceptorship. Future research should aim to better understand the challenges associated with APPEs in non-major cities and rural areas, thereby making significant contributions to the enhancement of the pharmacy profession.

Abstract:Premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD), a menstruous dysfunction, is characterized by profoundly depressed mood, and studies have shown that antidepressants are effective for PMDD. The authors describe a case of PMDD who was initially treated with selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors. Due to intolerable gastrointestinal side effects with selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, St. John's wort (900 mg/day) was substituted and much improvement in PMDD symptoms was noted for at least five-month follow-up. The authors propose that St. John's wort could be an alternative medication for PMDD, especially for patients experiencing intolerable side effects with selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors.

Abstract:Description: The action research evaluation describes a variety of novel teaching and learning techniques that were incorporated into a medicinal chemistry course. Clinically relevant medicinal chemistry cases were presented to learners complemented with 3D protein visualisation software in lectures. Evaluation: The learning outcome of students was assessed using in-class quizzes, poster session presentations and exams. Students’ marks and post-course surveys were used to assess the newly employed teaching methods. The improvement in student marks complemented the post-course surveys resulted. The majority of students agreed that the course design has improved their understanding of medicinal chemistry in general and helped in relating the course to pharmacy practice. Conclusion: This study suggests that diversifying teaching and learning methods is essential to improved students’ performance and understanding of medicinal chemistry. The integration of clinically relevant medicinal chemistry cases may help students to relate the concepts of drug chemistry, and drug design aspects to pharmacy practice.

Abstract:Globalization has attracted much attention to universities over the past decade. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of the United States-China international pharmacy education programs (IPEP) in China. Kirkpatrick's model of evaluation was used to evaluate IPEP from reaction and learning levels. In the reaction level, a questionnaire survey with a Likert scale was used. In the learning level, data from "Assessment Record of Advanced Clinical Pharmacy Practice of Peking University" were collected. Cronbach' alpha coefficient of reliability was calculated, principal component analysis and independentt-test were conducted. All of the students who attended IPEP (n = 36) completed the questionnaire survey. The scores of benefits were increased in 4 categories, including "Clinical practice competency improvement" (mean ranking [MR] = 3.11 points), "Understanding of doctor of Pharmacy education mode" (MR = 3.48 points), "English competency improvement" (MR = 3.64 points) and "International collaboration" (MR = 3.92 points). Meanwhile, the overall satisfaction was relatively high with the IPEP (MR = 4.22 points). In the learning level, a total of 22 records was obtained. Students who attended (n = 5) the IPEP achieved higher scores than those did not attend (n = 17) in the assessment records, although no statistical significant differences were observed. Personal in-depth interviews further supported the overall benefit of IPEP. The Kirkpatrick model of evaluation can be used for IPEP. The benefit and satisfaction of students attended the IPEP were high in the reaction level; even though no statistically significant difference was shown in the learning level, higher scores were still demonstrated.
The development and evaluation of a short-term international student research and educational program

Abstract:Objectives: This study aimed to describe the "how-to" details and processes for developing and evaluating a short-term international student research and education program. Methods: This study included two parts: development and implementation, and evaluation of the program. A foreign doctoral nursing student requested to visit the West Virginia University School of Nursing for research training and academic teaching experience. The global nursing program coordinator and the lead mentor met and identified the program basis and team participants. Learning activities were related to this student's interest in older adults and in-home end-of-life care, included four contents: research; educational engagement; practice/clinical engagement; special activities & professional development training and courses. The program evaluation was conducted at the end of the six-month visit using a focus group and an anonymous short survey. Participants (n = 10) included the host university's faculty, graduate students, and one short-term international student. Results: Content analysis of the participant's short survey answers and the focus group discussion resulted in three themes: 1) lessons learned from participating in the program (enhanced diversity in education and research, gaining new global healthcare knowledge, and self-reflection on and promoting cultural awareness); 2) program barriers and challenges (the visa application process, the English language barrier, the lack of public transportation in the town, and scheduling conflicts); and 3) strategies to overcome these barriers and challenges (adding cultural diversity information into curriculum; attending English proficiency with others in the class; using different communication techniques; continuous collaboration with the University's Office of Global Affairs for the Visa application process; providing interactive experiences). All participants rated their engagement in the program as very satisfactory (Mean = 4.67, SD = 0.50), and highly impacted their nursing skills in research, teaching, and clinical practice (Mean = 4.67, SD = 0.50). Conclusions: All the participants have gained some experience in this program, which can be used for future teaching guidance. Further, international nursing students need assistance to adjust and thrive in the host university learning community. Faculty must be culturally sensitive, understand the visiting foreign nursing student' learning needs, and advocate for an environment suitable for enhancing the students' learning.

Abstract:During the last years, pharmaceutical industry and pharmacy profession have greatly expanded worldwide because of more modernization, digitalization, and globalization. In contrast, the situation in Egypt is very complex since the pharmacists’ role is still underutilized either by the community or the health care system. Based on the modern global requirements of the pharmacy profession and an official analysis of the Egyptian pharmaceutical community performed has adopted the decision of the Ministry of Higher Education (MoHE) for a transition in the pharmaceutical education in Egypt. This transition aimed at upgrading the educational and professional level of the graduates of the faculties of pharmacy. In addition, it included replacing of the current pharmacy bachelor degree (B Pharm) with the doctor of pharmacy (Pharm D) degree. The aim of this paper was to highlight the current scenario of pharmacy education in Egypt and the future challenges of pharmaceutical industry and pharmacy profession in the era of the fourth industrial revolution (FIR). Switching from B Pharm to Pharm D in Egypt is just the first step to introduce better quality of pharmaceutical education. However, the FIR may change the strategies of patient counselling, drug delivery and prescriptions dispensing to more computer-aided scenarios.
Perceptions of Pharmacy Graduate Students Toward Research Ethics Education: A Cross-Sectional Study from a Developing Country

Abstract:Despite the potential value of graduate-level research ethics training, most Middle East countries, including Jordan, do not routinely offer formal research ethics training. In students enrolled in Jordanian master's level graduate program in pharmacy, the current study assessed: 1- differences in pre- and post-enrollment exposure to research ethics core themes, 2- whether this exposure was through a formal course or in an informal setting, and 3- student attitudes towards research ethics education and the need for integrating a dedicated research ethics course into pharmacy graduate programs. A 12-item on-line survey was developed by the authors and disseminated to a convenience sample of current and former master-level pharmacy students in Jordan. A total of 61 eligible respondents completed the survey. A minority of respondents (38%) acknowledged receiving research ethics training prior to enrollment into a postgraduate pharmacy program with nearly half (16%) describing this training as informal. In comparison, a larger percentage of the total respondents (56%) had received research ethics training during their postgraduate program enrollment, with nearly half of those (25%) indicating that this training was informal. A majority of respondents reported a strong need for integrating a formal research ethics course into postgraduate pharmacy curriculum (90%) to support their research training and thesis writing (89%). Overall, the study revealed a notable lack of research ethics education for graduate-level pharmacy students in Jordan.

Study Destination Choice and Career Preferences of International Students at China Pharmaceutical University

Abstract:This study had two main thematic aims: first, to determine the factors that influenced the choice of international students at China Pharmaceutical University (CPU) to consider China as a study destination; second, to determine the career preferences of international students upon completion of their various programs of study. As a cross-sectional study, relevant data were collected from undergraduate pharmacy students and postgraduates using a self-administered questionnaire. On the whole, the five most important pull factors that influenced the choice of China as the study destination for the respondents were: (1) quality of education, (2) quality of academic staff, (3) security, (4) desire to obtain a certificate from a foreign country and (5) availability of scholarship opportunities. With respect to the career choices, the top three career preferences of the international students were: (1) to work in the pharmaceutical industry (i.e., pharmaceutical manufacturing companies), (2) to practice clinical pharmacy and (3) to seek employment opportunities outside their countries. This study provides additional details on why China has gradually become a study destination of choice for international students. The career preferences of students could be useful in the design of academic programs that could meet their job aspirations.
Influence of Short-Term Study Abroad Experiences on Community Health Baccalaureate Students

Abstract:Background: Very short study abroad programs may be most feasible in undergraduate nursing programs, but little research describes their value for prospective nurses. The narratives of senior baccalaureate nursing students (N = 62) who traveled for 2 weeks to Cape Coast, Ghana, between semesters for a faculty-led community health clinical experience were analyzed. Method: Students responded to pre- and posttravel semi-structured, open-ended prompts regarding expectations and perceptions of culture, health, and happiness. Data were analyzed using a qualitative descriptive approach. Results: Four themes emerged related to perceptions of culture, relationships with community, definitions of health and happiness, and adaptability and innovation. African American students' (n = 3) responses highlighted unique themes regarding personal identity. Conclusion: Student perceptions of culture demonstrated progression through previously described stages of cultural competence. Relatively novel themes regarding community relationships, perceptions of health and happiness, and adaptability suggest additional value of this short-term study abroad experience for nursing students. Abstract:Objective: To evaluate the impact of a Geriatric Pharmacy elective on pharmacy students' knowledge, attitudes, and empathy regarding older adults. Methods: Enrolled students in a 15-week Geriatric Pharmacy elective during 3 consecutive academic years were invited to complete a precourse and postcourse survey. The survey consisted of the revised Palmore facts on aging quiz, the University of California at Los Angeles geriatric attitudes scale, the Kiersma-Chen empathy scale, and demographic questions. The presurvey and postsurvey data were compared and the impact of demographic factors on student knowledge, attitudes, and empathy was assessed in an exploratory analysis. Results: Sixty-six students participated in the study. Scores on the revised Palmore facts on aging quiz and the University of California at Los Angeles geriatric attitudes scale increased significantly postsurvey compared with presurvey. Student scores on the Kiersma-Chen empathy scale increased on the postsurvey compared with the presurvey, but this increase was not statistically significant. Student self-reported experience with older adults, race, and the course year impacted student performance. Conclusion: A geriatric elective positively impacted the students' knowledge and attitudes toward older adults. Future research should include validity and reliability testing of geriatric assessment scales in a diverse student population to ensure effective assessment of student knowledge, attitudes, and empathy in this patient population.
Impacts of Prosthetic Innovation in Ecuador Study Abroad Course

Abstract:Biomedical engineering (BME) students typically have a schedule filled with specific course requirements, leaving little room for spending a semester studying abroad. We established a new short-term BME study abroad course, partnering with a non-profit healthcare organization that provides high-quality prosthetic care to underserved populations. This innovative study abroad course was met with great student demand. The impact of this short-term study abroad course is increased by developing year-long BME senior capstone design projects based on the needs identified throughout the experience in Ecuador. Shortly after the conclusion of spring semester, students and two BME faculty/staff traveled to Ecuador. During the work week, the students participated in small teams in patient evaluations, castings, fabrication of prosthetics, device fittings, rapid prototyping-testing iterations, and post-prosthesis gait training with physical therapy. Weekends included guided cultural activities. Each student maintained a journal that reflected observations and insights from these experiences. Upon return to the US, students that registered for an additional course credit created video reflection presentations and wrote project proposal reports based on the needs identified in Ecuador. The project proposal reports were used to develop a BME senior capstone design project. Pre and post course self-assessment surveys showed significant increases in five ABET learning outcomes, three BME learning outcomes, and four course-specific learning outcomes. Students who took the two-credit course reported significant increases in four more learning outcomes than students who took the one-credit course. Many students described the experience as inspiring and life-changing, and the program continues to run each summer.

Abstract:Students returning from an international business study tour program were interviewed about their experiences and perceptions of the professional and personal impact of the program. When interviews were conducted within 3-4 months of the students’ return, mixed responses were received, with some students highly positive about their experiences, but other students highly distressed about the level of independence required of them. When students were consulted two to six years after the completion of the program, including re-interviewing the initial study participants, students appeared more able to appreciate the benefits of the program. This was evident in their responses that highlighted an improvement in discipline-based knowledge, a better understanding of personal and intercultural issues, and the further development of their generic academic skills. Negative emotions had all but disappeared from students’ responses. While these findings are from small sample sizes and are not conclusive, the results raise important questions about the timing of critical program evaluations.

Abstract:Objective: Little research addressed training pharmacy students on bias towards vulnerable patients such as migrant domestic workers (MDWs). This study evaluates a module addressing bias and cultural competence when working with MDWs in community pharmacies. Methods: Two cohorts of Lebanese Bachelor of pharmacy students completed this module as part of a core Public Health class. Guided by a social psychology framework, the module involved watching a lecture, discussing an article, watching a video addressing bias in healthcare, and taking an Implicit Association Test. Second, students interviewed one MDW and one pharmacist before filling a reflection worksheet. Students' reflections were analyzed qualitatively using content analysis. Further, to evaluate the module's impact quantitatively, an aggregate perception of helpfulness scale was created and validated. Items addressed students' own experience with the module as well as its impact on pharmacists interviewed by students. Results: Of 170 students completing the module and providing qualitative data, 131 were asked to fill a survey addressing perceptions of assignment helpfulness. Of those 131 students, 126 filled the survey. On a scale ranging from zero to four, the composite mean score for helpfulness was 3.4, SD = 0.5. Students reported a positive impact of the interview in improving awareness of bias for pharmacists they interviewed (mean = 3.5, SD = 0.6). Qualitative analysis produced insight into students' experience with the module including challenges in communication with MDWs; MDWs' experience with bias and its repercussions; predictability, or lack thereof, of assignment results; plans to address bias after taking the module; evaluation of interviewed pharmacist's service; and perceived pharmacists' impressions of the assignment. Conclusions: A two-part module shows promise in educating pharmacy students about bias and cultural competence. Engaging target audience including pharmacists can make such experiences meaningful for students while providing a learning opportunity for those health professionals.
