Abstract:Premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD), a menstruous dysfunction, is characterized by profoundly depressed mood, and studies have shown that antidepressants are effective for PMDD. The authors describe a case of PMDD who was initially treated with selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors. Due to intolerable gastrointestinal side effects with selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, St. John's wort (900 mg/day) was substituted and much improvement in PMDD symptoms was noted for at least five-month follow-up. The authors propose that St. John's wort could be an alternative medication for PMDD, especially for patients experiencing intolerable side effects with selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors.
An Oncology Pharmacy Practice Elective Course for Third-Year Pharmacy Students

Abstract:Objective. To develop and implement a 1-credit-hour oncology pharmacy practice elective course for third-year pharmacy students and assess its impact on examination scores in a required pharmacotherapeutics course.Design. Major topics were identified to focus on therapeutic management and supportive care of the oncology patient. Psychosocial topics were incorporated to help pharmacy students better relate to oncology patients.Assessment. Learning was assessed by means of 2 computer-based examinations, weekly reflection posts, and a completed oncology service-learning project and reflection paper. Students enrolled in the course achieved higher pharmacotherapeutics oncology section examination scores than students who had not taken the course. Also, this course increased students' interest in oncology pharmacy.Conclusion. The oncology pharmacy elective course has received overwhelmingly positive feedback from students and student enrollment continues to grow. We will continue to offer this course to future practitioners.

Enhancing application and long-term retention of clinical knowledge using an extracurricular non-credit course

Abstract:Background and purpose: Curricular overload in doctor of pharmacy (PharmD) programs is necessitating innovative approaches to support student learning. The purpose of this study was to describe the design, delivery, and assessment of a non-credit extracurricular course that reinforced foundational concepts through the application of learning in case-based activities. Educational activity and setting: A 14-week extracurricular course, designed using principles of spaced repetition and interleaving in the context of case-based exercises, was offered to third-year PharmD students. Content focused on Top 300 and over-the-counter medications, brown bag sessions/drug utilization review, and medication therapy management. Short-term course effectiveness was assessed through post-course focus groups. Longitudinal effectiveness was assessed nine months post-course using an online survey. Qualitative data were analyzed using a content analysis process with overarching themes identified. Clinical interventions identified in the post-course survey were analyzed descriptively. Findings: Twenty-four students completed the course and all assessments. Focus group themes were: (1) making connections to prior learning; (2) moving beyond memorizing facts; and (3) benefit from a low-stakes course. Students identified 162 course-linked clinical interventions during advanced pharmacy practice experiences (APPEs) in 16 different settings. Summary: Student learning can be enhanced through integration of evidence-based teaching strategies both within and across the curriculum. This can be accomplished not only through introduction of an extracurricular course but through modification of existing courses. Providing additional opportunities for reinforcing core clinical knowledge and applying clinical decision-making in a low-stakes environment was well-received by students and helped them make clinical interventions during APPEs.
Pharmacognosy, a Classical Theme Tuned to a Contemporary Melody

Abstract:Objective. To describe the development of a pharmacognosy course that uses a combination of didactic teaching, team-based projects, and practicum laboratory practice. Methods. A course titled “Pharmacognosy” was developed by applying a three-tier teaching methodology: in the classroom, the basic concepts and principles were introduced in a didactic manner; outside the classroom, students worked in teams and each team created an independent literature-based research project that was submitted as a poster presentation; in the pharmacy practicum laboratory, students worked individually and conducted a quality control experiment comprised of a quantitative analysis of an herbal product. Results. During the seven-year course implementation, 1091 first-year PharmD students participated in the course. Their performance was consistently satisfactory. On average, 30% of students in each class received a grade of “A” and teams received a “B” and above on their projects. Conclusion. The pharmacognosy course, equipped with concurrent teaching methods, implemented with a group research project, and reinforced by practicum laboratory experience, has reached the original goal of introducing a classical topic in an updated and contemporary fashion to meet the requirement of integrated pharmacy education and practice.
Pharmacy Students’ Perception of an Elective Course on Evidence-based Learning Strategies

Abstract:Objective. To examine pharmacy students' perceptions of an elective course on evidence-based learning strategies.Methods. Pre- and post-course survey questionnaires were administered to students who enrolled in an elective course, to determine the learning strategies they used prior to course attendance, track their use of evidence-based learning strategies and observance of healthy lifestyle habits, and assess their perception of the course. A written assignment was given that required students to reflect on the learning outcomes that resulted from their application of evidence-based learning strategies. Mean scores on the pre- and post-course survey were analyzed using a general linear model repeated measures test.Results. The 59 students in this study predominantly used less-effective strategies (eg, re-reading and re-writing of notes) prior to taking the course. They reported increased use of evidence-based learning strategies, particularly retrieval practice and elaboration, and practice of healthy lifestyle habits (ie, enough sleep, exercise, good nutrition) after course completion. Students believed that using the above learning strategies improved their learning and memory and performance on graded assessments, among other benefits. Students had a positive perception of the course.Conclusion. The elective course was associated with increased use of effective learning strategies, adoption of healthy lifestyle practices that aid learning, and increased appreciation for evidence-based learning strategies by the students. Future studies are needed to examine actual learning outcomes and barriers to implementation of evidence-based learning techniques.

Abstract:Objective. To assess the impact of a journal club elective course on measures of student’s longitudinal performance throughout an accelerated three-year Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) curriculum. Methods. Students were separated into two groups (those who did and did not complete a journal club elective). The following primary and secondary student outcomes were assessed using hierarchical linear regression analysis: score on the Pharmacy Curriculum Outcomes Assessment (PCOA), overall course grade in the Pharmacotherapeutics IV course, overall course grade in the Research Design and Literature Evaluation II course, and average grade on acute/ambulatory care advanced pharmacy practice experiences (APPEs). Results. One hundred ninety-seven students were included in the study (73 students who completed the journal club elective and 124 students who did not). After controlling for baseline confounders, enrollment in the journal club elective was associated with students scoring 24.5 points higher on their overall scaled score on the PCOA. Enrollment in the journal club elective also appeared to add 2% to a student's overall grade in each of the courses and APPEs. All results were statistically significant. Conclusion. An elective journal club course can significantly improve multiple objective measures of pharmacy student learning. Components of this course, such as reading primary literature, presenting a journal club, learning from peers, and scaffolding of pharmacotherapeutic concepts are important elements to consider when designing a journal club curriculum.

An elective pharmaceutical care course to prepare students for an advanced pharmacy practice experience in Kenya

Abstract:OBJECTIVE. To develop a prerequisite elective course to prepare students for an advanced pharmacy practice experience (APPE) in Kenya. DESIGN. The course addressed Kenyan culture, travel preparation, patient care, and disease-state management. Instructional formats used were small-group discussions and lectures, including some Web-based presentations by Kenyan pharmacists on disease states commonly treated in Kenya. Cultural activities include instruction in conversational and medical Kiswahili and reading of a novel related to global health programs. ASSESSMENT. Student performance was assessed using written care plans, quizzes, reflection papers, a formulary management exercise, and pre- and post-course assessments. Student feedback on course evaluations indicated that the course was well received and students felt prepared for the APPE. CONCLUSION. This course offered a unique opportunity for students to learn about pharmacy practice in global health and to apply previously acquired skills in a resource-constrained international setting. It prepares students to actively participate in clinical care activities during an international APPE.
Evolution of a Natural Products and Nutraceuticals Course in the Pharmacy Curriculum

Abstract:Objective. To develop, implement, and modify a required, second-year pharmacy course that provides an understanding of the scientific, therapeutic, and clinical principles, as well as the evidence-based medicine underlying the use of natural products. Design. A 28-hour, multi-faculty course was developed and offered in 2008. The course was modified over the years to enhance students' practice skills in the use of natural products. A course evaluation and survey were administered to assess the students' opinions. Assessment. Students performed well in the course and provided favorable evaluations, especially for the latest offering. Students reported significantly improved skills in providing advice to patients regarding the use of natural products. Conclusion. The course increased the students' knowledge and application of information and counseling skills regarding natural products.
Assessing the impact of a leadership and advocacy elective course in a college of pharmacy curriculum

Abstract:Introduction and leadership framework: While the scope of a pharmacist's work has grown, continued advocacy is needed to ensure that their skillset is used to the best advantage of the patient. To accomplish this aim, the University of Utah College of Pharmacy created an elective advocacy and leadership class to train students in leadership and advocacy methods, with a focus on enabling students to practice advocacy within the state of Utah throughout the class. Educational context and methods: In addition to traditional lectures, this class asked students to apply the knowledge learned in class to projects within their sphere of influence. Activities included drafting their own bill, writing to a legislator, attending state legislative and board of pharmacy meetings, and a longitudinal quality improvement project. Students answered a pre- and post-class survey to assess their attitudes towards advocacy efforts and how those attitudes were affected by participation in the class. Findings and discussion: As expected, a positive change in attitude towards advocacy was observed, and students indicated that they were more likely to engage in advocacy activities in the future after participating in the course. Moreover, a real legislative outcome has been observed as the result of class projects. Implications: Enabling students to engage in advocacy activities and guiding them to effect real change is a valuable technique in pharmacy education. Similar efforts can be replicated in other institutions, and similar training should be expanded to required portions of the pharmacy curriculum.

Abstract:Antibiotic therapy of varying dose, type, and duration was given to 11 infants and children with clinically and laboratory proven pertussis, and cultures and FA studies were used to determine their nasopharyngeal carriage of B. pertussis organisms. Nine of the 11 patients were found to still be harboring the organisms at the conclusion of the initial course of therapy. It is recommended that patients with pertussis who are treated with antibiotics should not be assumed to be non-contagious after therapy is completed and that appropriate bacteriologic or FA studies are essential in determining whether nasopharyngeal carriage still exists.

Abstract:Objective. To implement an advanced elective compounding course where pharmacy students conduct investigations to improve compounding-related issues that were subsequently evaluated in a required compounding course. Methods. The elective compounding course required students to engage in self-directed learning, critical thinking, creation and evaluation of laboratory data, and self- and group reflection. Students researched and developed "solutions" to compounded preparation problems, and their solutions were tested in the next iteration of a required compounding course. For example, students in the elective course identified sources of potency variability in a ketoprofen Pluronic organogel (PLO) emulsion preparation. The students identified six variables and executed an investigative action plan. They considered all data collected and proposed a method to reduce potency variation. The recommended solution was implemented in the next offering of a required compounding course and the potency variability results were compared to the previous required course's results. Results. The mean ketoprofen PLO emulsion potency achieved in the required course prior to implementing the elective course recommendation was 129% (SD 21%), n=158. After the recommended change from elective course was implemented, the mean potency was 118% (SD 21%), n=131. Conclusion. The teaching methods and activities conducted in the elective course provided students with a deeper level of learning and understanding of compounding science, while providing practical experience in scientific research methodology. The course also provided a cyclic quality improvement feedback mechanism for the required course.

Abstract:Background: Participation in international experiences can promote personal and professional growth, but students in schools of pharmacy may face barriers in pursuing overseas experiences. Objectives: The objectives of this report are to describe the design, implementation, and student perceptions of an online course co-taught by two schools of pharmacy in different countries for students at both institutions. Methods: The course was established through an ongoing partnership between the universities and was focused on diabetes based on mutual interest and expertise. The course was offered in a three-hour period weekly using short lectures, small group discussions and projects. Results: Cross-cultural learning was emphasised by forming student groups with representation from both universities. In a post-course survey and reflection, students reported gaining new knowledge, perspectives, and transferable skills as a result of the international nature of the course. Conclusion: The online international course broadened students’ views of pharmacists’ roles and strengthened the partnership between the two universities.
An innovative seminar course in business etiquette for pharmacy graduate students

Abstract:Objectives: To develop and implement a seminar course for graduate students in the social and administrative pharmaceutical sciences to enhance knowledge and confidence with respect their abilities to demonstrate appropriate business etiquette. Design: A 1-credit graduate seminar course was designed based on learner-centered constructivist theory and application of Fink's Taxonomy for Significant Learning.Assessment. Eleven students participated in the spring 2011 seminar course presentations and activities. Students completed pre- and post-assessment instruments, which included knowledge and attitudinal questions. Formative and summative assessments showed gains in student knowledge, perceived skills, and confidence based on observation and student-reported outcomes. Conclusion: Graduate student reaction to the course was overwhelmingly positive. The etiquette course has potential application in doctor of pharmacy education, other graduate disciplines, undergraduate education, and continuing professional development.
Translating Clinical Decision-Making Skills From a Critical Care Pharmacy Elective to the Required Curriculum

Abstract:Objective: To examine the impact of a critical care pharmacy elective (CCPE) on student performance in other courses in the Doctor of Pharmacy curriculum that emphasize clinical reasoning and decision making. Methods: This is a retrospective, cohort study including all students from the 2019-2021 graduating classes enrolled in required courses, Pharmacotherapy and Integrated Patient Cases (IPCs). Students were divided for comparison based on completion of the CCPE. The primary outcome was outstanding performance, defined by a final course grade ≥90%, in Pharmacotherapy and IPC. Baseline characteristics and outcomes were analyzed using descriptive statistics and the χ2 test or two-sided t test for categorical and continuous variables, respectively. Binary logistic regression models were constructed to identify variables associated with the primary outcome. Results: Of 377 students included, 129 (34%) completed the CCPE. Baseline characteristics were similar between both groups, except more females completed the CCPE. Students that completed the CCPE were not more likely to demonstrate outstanding performance in Pharmacotherapy III (20% vs 30%) or Pharmacotherapy IV (27% vs 24%), but were more likely in IPC (34% vs 23%). In the adjusted analysis, CCPE students were almost twice as likely to exhibit outstanding performance in IPC. Conclusion: Students that completed the CCPE were more likely to demonstrate outstanding performance in IPC, but not in either of the Pharmacotherapy courses. Students may benefit from practicing clinical reasoning earlier in the curriculum to build-up to effective and efficient clinical decision-making. Implications of course structure on student performance should be further explored.
Perceptions and Utility of Course Evaluations in US Pharmacy Schools

Abstract:Objective: This study aimed to describe the purpose, implementation, and perceived utility of course evaluations in pharmacy programs. Methods: After a literature review, a 34-item survey was developed, pretested, and sent to assessment administrators at accredited pharmacy programs (N = 139) with at least 3 follow-ups. Descriptive and inferential statistics were performed in IBM SPSS Statistics software. Results: A total of 90 programs responded (64.7% response rate). Most students (94%) were offered the opportunity to complete course evaluations. Some students completed evaluations during the course (47%), while others did so within 1 week of completion of the course (49%). Whether or not class time was given for students to complete the survey was often dependent on faculty choice (52.2%). Results were typically released after final grades were posted (92%), in time to use for the next semester of teaching (77%). Faculty were chosen to be evaluated by the number of teaching hours (50%) followed by all instructors (45.6%). Programs used the results for performance reviews by chairs (91%), course coordinator reviews (84%), and committee continuous quality improvement efforts (72%). Most programs did not provide faculty guidance on using evaluations (78%) nor development/mentoring (57%); only 22% of programs offered student development in completing evaluations. Conclusion: While most programs invite feedback from all students via evaluations, most did not provide guidance to faculty on how to use this feedback for faculty or course development purposes. A more robust process to optimize the use of course evaluations should be developed.
Drug information course for pharmacy staff development

Abstract:An interactive course in drug information skills developed for pharmacists at a not-for-profit, tertiary-care hospital is described. Faculty members from the area school of pharmacy developed, taught, and evaluated the program. Before the course was developed, pharmacy staff members were asked to rate their drug information skills; the pharmacists' responses indicated their belief that they were not proficient enough in the skills needed in daily practice. The course content and format were refined after 11 pharmacists completed a pilot program. A handbook was developed that contained objectives, session outlines, and literature for each of the six topics chosen for the course. Although the handbook was the primary teaching aid, wall charts and computer demonstrations were also used. Sessions were structured for the needs of adult students by using a small-group discussion format that emphasized the practical relevance of the information and encouraged participants to share personal experiences. Each session was offered on two separate days to facilitate attendance. Those who completed the course received credit for 12 contact hours of continuing education. Of 16 pharmacists enrolled in the course, 11 completed it. An interactive course in drug information skills, developed to meet the needs of hospital pharmacists, was well accepted because it incorporated personal experiences, small-group activities, and flexible scheduling.
A novel learning approach to pharmaceutical sciences research in a pharmacy research advanced pharmacy practice experience (APPE) elective course

Abstract:Background and purpose: This project investigates the use of pharmacy student metacognitive learning in a laboratory-based science research advanced pharmacy practice experience (APPE). Educational activity and setting: We describe a five-week research APPE. This course is separated into two parts which run simultaneously. In part 1, students read and discuss papers from primary literature to learn the context of the project and the theory behind each laboratory procedure. In part 2, students perform experiments in the laboratory that contribute to the primary investigator's (PI's) ongoing research project and relate directly to the readings from part 1. Metacognitive processes allow students to better understand and evaluate the primary literature and to connect that information with the hands-on experiments being performed. Findings: Currently, this APPE has run five times with a total of eight students. Student learning was assessed by several written and oral assignments graded with rubrics. Students' perceptions of their own learning and metacognitive development following the course was assessed using a survey. Summary: This APPE seems to be a useful experience for both faculty and students. Students obtain laboratory and metacognitive skill development, while the collaborating laboratory is supplied with material required for further experiments. Importantly, the APPE preceptor is not the PI, so the preceptor is able to focus on the learning skills (both metacognition and hands-on) portion of the APPE.

Abstract:Objective. To incorporate a pharmacy informatics program in the didactic curriculum of a team-based learning institution and to assess students' knowledge of and confidence with health informatics during the course. Design. A previously developed online pharmacy informatics course was adapted and implemented into a team-based learning (TBL) 3-credit-hour drug information course for doctor of pharmacy (PharmD) students in their second didactic year. During a period of five weeks (15 contact hours), students used the online pharmacy informatics modules as part of their readiness assurance process. Additional material was developed to comply with the TBL principles. Online pre/postsurveys were administered to evaluate knowledge gained and students' perceptions of the informatics program. Assessment. Eighty-three second-year students (84% response rate) completed the surveys. Participants' knowledge of electronic health records, computerized physician order entry, pharmacy information systems, and clinical decision support was significantly improved. Additionally, their confidence significantly improved in terms of describing health informatics terminology, describing the benefits and barriers of using health information technology, and understanding reasons for systematically processing health information. Conclusion. Students responded favorably to the incorporation of pharmacy informatics content into a drug information course using a TBL approach. Students met the learning objectives of seven thematic areas and had positive attitudes toward the course after its completion.

Abstract:Objective: To evaluate the impact of a Geriatric Pharmacy elective on pharmacy students' knowledge, attitudes, and empathy regarding older adults. Methods: Enrolled students in a 15-week Geriatric Pharmacy elective during 3 consecutive academic years were invited to complete a precourse and postcourse survey. The survey consisted of the revised Palmore facts on aging quiz, the University of California at Los Angeles geriatric attitudes scale, the Kiersma-Chen empathy scale, and demographic questions. The presurvey and postsurvey data were compared and the impact of demographic factors on student knowledge, attitudes, and empathy was assessed in an exploratory analysis. Results: Sixty-six students participated in the study. Scores on the revised Palmore facts on aging quiz and the University of California at Los Angeles geriatric attitudes scale increased significantly postsurvey compared with presurvey. Student scores on the Kiersma-Chen empathy scale increased on the postsurvey compared with the presurvey, but this increase was not statistically significant. Student self-reported experience with older adults, race, and the course year impacted student performance. Conclusion: A geriatric elective positively impacted the students' knowledge and attitudes toward older adults. Future research should include validity and reliability testing of geriatric assessment scales in a diverse student population to ensure effective assessment of student knowledge, attitudes, and empathy in this patient population.
