Abstract:In view of the amphiphilicity of surfactants, which can improve the hydrophilicity of polyethylene (PE) microplastics and increase the mobility of PE microplastics, the research on the transport behavior of PE microplastics under the coexistence of surfactants is still lacking and necessary. In this work, column experiments were carried out on the suspensions made of 15 surfactants mixed and dispersed with PE microplastics to explore the promoting effect of various surfactants on the transport of PE in saturated porous media. The dynamic contact angle of surfactant on PE surface and the surface tension and zeta potential of PE / surfactant dispersion system were measured. The interaction energy between PE / surfactant and medium, the adhesion of surfactant on PE surface were calculated respectively according to DLVO theory and Young's equation. The experimental results showed that different surfactants promoted the transportation of PE in the column to different degrees. The promotion degree of cationic, anionic and nonionic surfactants on PE transport from large to small were BG > PQ28 > CTAB > BLB > TLB, SDS > SLDED > DSS > SL > SDBS, POES > T40 > T80 > X100 > TX20, respectively. The recovery of PE in the column ranged from 17% to 99.93% under the surfactants. The calculation results of the adhesion of surfactant on PE surface also showed the same law. The minimum single molecule adsorption area (AsL) of surfactant on PE surface was negatively correlated with the recovery of PE in the column under the same type of surfactant. The high adhesion of surfactant on PE surface was caused by the small adsorption area of single molecule, which finally made PE obtain higher stability and penetration. These findings provide new insights and methods for the fate and transport of microplastic and surfactant coexisting systems in soil and the prediction of their potential risk of groundwater pollution.

Abstract:The transport of microplastics in porous media is attracting increasing attention. However, to date, research is limited to polystyrene microplastics. Meanwhile, surfactants can promote solid dispersion to form a stable suspension, possibly allowing microplastics to migrate when attached to a surfactant, which would increase the scope and degree of microplastic pollution, further endangering human health and the stability of the ecological environment. Therefore, in this study, the transport behavior of microplastics in porous media was explored in the presence of surfactants. Herein, polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP) were evaluated while dispersed by two ionic surfactants: cationic surfactant-cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and anionic surfactant-sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate (SDBS). The influence of different factors (surfactant concentration, ionic strength, pH, flow rate, and multivalent cations) on the transport of microplastics in porous media was explored via quartz sand packed-column experiments. Our experimental results show that the transport abilities of PE and PP increased with increasing surfactant concentration when the surfactant concentration was less than the critical micelle concentration (CMC). In the presence of CTAB and SDBS, physicochemical factors had different effects on the transport of microplastics mainly by controlling Zeta potential, advection diffusion and CMC. The mobility of PE and PP decreased with increasing ionic strength, cation valence and pH, and decreasing flow rate. However, the mobility of PE and PP under CTAB is much greater than that of PE and PP under SDBS, because quartz sand can absorb more CTAB molecules through electrostatic attraction to weaken the collision between microplastics and quartz sand. Further, the transport ability of PP was greater than that of PE under all conditions considered. Notably, the Extended-Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (XDLVO) theory formed by adding osmotic, elastic, and hydrophobic force could well described the migration behavior of microplastics in CTAB and SDBS well. This research highlights that surfactant has a significant impact on the transport ability of microplastics, and provides a comprehensive understanding of the migration and fate behaviors of microplastics affected by surfactants, which is necessary to prevent and reduce the environmental hazards of microplastics.
Synergistic effects of microplastic stability and adsorption rate on co-transport of microplastics and Pb under surfactant

Abstract:The emergence of microplastics (MPs) and their coexistence with heavy metal contaminants pose potential risks to the safety of the subsurface environment and public health. Therefore, it is crucial to explore the co-transport of MPs (polypropylene (PP), polyethylene (PE), polystyrene (PS), polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) and polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE)) with the heavy metal Pb(II) under the surfactant (sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate (SDBS) and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB)). In this study, column experiments were performed to investigate the co-transport of MPs and Pb(II) under surfactants. The co-transport mechanism of MPs with Pb(II) under surfactant was revealed by MPs stability and batch adsorption experiments. Experimental results showed that the presence of Pb(II) did not influence the mobility of MPs under CTAB and SDBS; however, MPs can affect the mobility of Pb(II). Specifically, under CTAB, the MPs increased the recovery rate of Pb(II) from 86% to 87.55% - 97.55%. However, under SDBS, the high mobility of PS, PE, and PP inhibited the transport of Pb(II), and the recoveries of Pb(II) decreased from 79% to 57.53% - 70.96%. The low mobility of PTFE and PMMA slightly promoted the transport of Pb(II). This could be attributed to two reasons. One aspect is the adsorption rate of Pb(II) by MPs, which plays a pivotal role in influencing the transport tendency of Pb(II) with MPs. Another aspect is the MPs stability, as greater stability enhances their dispersity and accelerates the adsorption rate of Pb(II), thereby facilitating the co-transport of Pb(II) with MPs. This study could provide valuable insights for assessing the transport and environmental impact of MPs and heavy metals in the presence of surfactants.

Abstract:Microplastic (MP) pollution has become a global concern, and the transport behavior of MPs in soil-water systems is vital in determining their distribution and potential risks to the subsurface environment. To reveal the role of various soil components on MP migration, the downward transport behavior of polystyrene (PS) MPs were explored in this study via column experiments with mono or multi-soil components as porous media. Compared with the selected soil mineral volcanic rock (VR) and fine river sand (RS), condensed soil organic matter (SOM) resulted in higher transport efficiencies for PS microparticles, with greater than 90% total mass recovery under the experimental conditions. The more surface charges of SOM than minerals contribute to the high migration efficiency of PS MPs, and electrostatic repulsion is assumed a significant driving mechanism in the migration of negatively charged PS particles in soils. The ionic strength of porewater influenced the PS migration behaviors by altering the electrostatic interactions between the MPs and soil grains. The uniform mixing of SOM with mineral grains significantly enhanced the transport efficiency of PS MPs in the columns. The results provide supports for the prediction and prevention of the risks of MPs to the subsurface environment.

Abstract:In this study, the impact of surfactants on the adsorption behavior of Pb(II) onto microplastics-sediment (MPs-S) complexes was investigated. Firstly, virgin polyamide (VPA) and polyethylene (VPE) were placed in Xiangjiang River sediment for six months to conduct in-situ aging. The results indicated that the biofilm-developed polyamide (BPA) and polyethylene (BPE) formed new oxygen-containing functional groups and different biofilm species. Furthermore, the adsorption capacity of Pb(II) in sediment (S) and MPs-S complexes was in the following order: S > BPA-S > VPE-S > VPA-S > BPE-S. The addition of sodium dodecyl benzenesulfonate (SDBS) promoted the adsorption of Pb(II), and the adsorption amount of Pb(II) increased with the higher concentration of SDBS, while adding cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) showed the opposite result. The adsorption process of MPs-S complexes to Pb(II) was dominated by chemical adsorption, and the interaction between MPs-S complexes and Pb(II) was multilayer adsorption involving physical and chemical adsorption when the surfactants were added. Besides, the pH exerts a significant effect on Pb(II) adsorption in different MPs-S complexes, and the highest adsorption amount occurred at pH 6. Noteworthy, CTAB promoted the adsorption ability of Pb(II) when the exogenous FA was added. The binding characteristic of sediment endogenous DOM components and Pb(II) was influenced by the addition of MPs and surfactants. Finally, it confirmed that adsorption mechanisms mainly involve electrostatic and hydrophobic interaction. This study provides a new perspective to explore the environmental behaviors of Pb(II) by MPs and sediments with the addition of surfactants, which was conducive to evaluating the ecological risks of MPs and heavy metals in aquatic environments.

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) pollution has emerged as a global concern, and wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are one of the potential sources of MPs in the environment. However, the effect of polyethylene MPs (PE) on nitrogen (N) removal in moving bed biofilm reactor (MBBR) remains unclear. We hypothesized that PE would affect N removal in MBBR by influencing its microbial community. In this study, we investigated the impacts of different PE concentrations (100, 500, and 1000 μg/L) on N removal, enzyme activities, and microbial community in MBBR. Folin–phenol and anthrone colorimetric methods, oxidative stress and enzyme activity tests, and high-throughput sequencing combined with bioinformation analysis were used to decipher the potential mechanisms. The results demonstrated that 1000 μg/L PE had the greatest effect on NH 4 + -N and TN removal, with a decrease of 33.5 % and 35.2 %, and nitrifying and denitrifying enzyme activities were restrained by 29.5–39.6 % and 24.6–47.4 %. Polysaccharide and protein contents were enhanced by PE, except for 1000 μg/L PE, which decreased protein content by 65.4 mg/g VSS. The positive links of species interactions under 1000 μg/L PE exposure was 52.07 %, higher than under 500 μg/L (51.05 %) and 100 μg/L PE (50.35 %). Relative abundance of some metabolism pathways like carbohydrate metabolism and energy metabolism were restrained by 0.07–0.11 % and 0.27–0.4 %. Moreover, the total abundance of nitrification and denitrification genes both decreased under PE exposure. Overall, PE reduced N removal by affecting microbial community structure and species interactions, inhibiting some key metabolic pathways, and suppressing key enzyme activity and functional gene abundance. This paper provides new insights into assessing the risk of MPs to WWTPs, contributing to ensuring the health of aquatic ecosystems.

Abstract:Microplastic (MP) pollution has become an area of increasing concern because MPs accumulate various types of pollutants. Many previous studies have explored the interactions between MPs and hydrophobic pollutants. However, little research has been conducted on hydrophilic pollutants, which are of much higher concentration and ubiquitous in environment. Surfactants cause hydrophobic MPs to become hydrophilic, which may significantly enhance their capacities to adsorb hydrophilic pollutants. This study explored the influence of co-existing surfactants on the adsorption of ionic organic pollutants by MPs, and found that the presence of an ionic surfactant could significantly enhance the capacity of polyvinyl chloride (PVC, 0.2 mm) MPs to adsorb pollutants with opposite charges. The Langmuir methylene blue adsorption capacity of PVC could be increased from 172 to 4417 ppm in the presence of a sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate surfactant. Nonionic surfactants impeded the adsorption of both cationic and anionic pollutants due to the steric resistance of the hydrophilic polyethelene glycol chains. The electrostatic interaction mechanism dominated the interfacial behaviors of ionic pollutants on surfactant-adsorbed MP interfaces. The effects of the surfactants were further verified using four different model pollutants and six surfactants. The adsorption capacities of real environmental MPs, including PVC, polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), and polystyrene (PS), increased by three to twenty-six times. The adsorption properties of MPs may be determined by the presence of co-existing surfactants, rather than their polymer species or additives.

Abstract:Both surfactants and natural organic matters (NOMs) are substances commonly found in aqueous environments, and their effects on the transport of nanoplastics that is gradually gaining widespread attention in porous media are currently in their infancy, while their combined effects are absent. We investigated innovatively the combined effect of surfactants and NOMs on the transport of polystyrene nanoplastics (PS-NPs) in saturated porous media. Adsorption tests of surfactants and NOMs onto PS-NPs, adsorption tests of PS-NPs onto quartz sand, and transport tests of PS-NPs in saturated quartz sand were conducted. Hydrophobicity and Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (DLVO) interaction energy were measured and calculated. A mathematical model was employed to fit the transport of PS-NPs in porous media. It was found that the effects and action mechanisms of cationic cetyl trimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and anionic sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate (SDBS) on the transport of PS-NPs in porous media were distinct. In the presence of CTAB, 1 mg/L humic acid (HA) and 10 mg/L sodium alginate (SA) could promote aggregation of PS-NPs by decreasing the absolute zeta potential of PS-NPs, and reducing the energy barrier between PS-NPs and porous media and increasing the blocking and straining, thus inhibiting the transport of PS-NPs. In the presence of SDBS, SA and HA could improve the adsorption of SDBS onto PS-NPs by bridging and increasing adsorption sites, thus increasing the hydrophilicity of PS-NPs and improving the transport of PS-NPs. Whether or not NOMs were present, the transport of PS-NPs in porous media was mainly governed by the DLVO interaction energy in the presence of cationic surfactants and by hydrophobicity in the presence of anionic surfactants. This innovative observation has led to an understanding on the environmental behaviour of nanoplastics in porous media under complex environments.

Abstract:Microplastic (MP) pollution presents significant global environmental challenges, exacerbated by reduction aging processes in anoxic environments, thereby increasing environmental risks and potential threats to human health. However, the mechanisms underlying the transport of reduced MPs remain poorly understood. In this study, laboratory-scale column experiments were conducted to investigate the transport behavior of polybutylene adipate terephthalate (PBAT), a common biodegradable MPs, and its reduced products obtained through the aging process mediated by two typical reducing agents, NaBH4 and Na2S, under varying conditions (ionic strength (IS), divalent cations, and low molecular weight organic acids (LMWOAs)). The results indicated that reduction aging improved the hydrophilicity of PBAT by increasing the surface roughness (roughness factor increased from 1.300 to 1.642) and surface energy (from 51.80 to 107.03 mN m-1), thereby increasing the mobility of reduced PBAT (with recovery rate increased from 53.77 % to 63.18 %). Increased IS decreased the mobility of reduced PBAT by decreasing the surface negative charge density. Divalent cations inhibited the mobility of both pristine and reduced PBAT in porous media, with pristine PBAT, containing more oxygen functional groups, exhibiting stronger inhibition. Furthermore, LMWOAs promoted the retention of reduced PBAT in porous media, which was dependent on the type of LMWOAs. This study revealed the alterations in MPs properties caused by reduction aging and their effects on transport mechanisms, offering new insights into the transport behavior and environmental risks of reduced MPs.
Effects of Conventional Non-Biodegradable Film-Derived Microplastics and New Biodegradable Film-Derived Microplastics on Soil Properties and Microorganisms after Entering Sub-Surface Soil

Abstract:Plastic film mulching, widely used in agriculture, leads to microplastic (MP) pollution in soils. While biodegradable polybutylene adipate terephthalate (PBAT) films may offer a solution, their impacts on subsurface soils and microorganisms remain unclear. To investigate the effects of conventional non-biodegradable polyethylene (PE) and biodegradable PBAT MPs on the properties of sub-surface soils and microbial communities, MPs were added at varying doses in a field experiment and incubated for 160 days. Physicochemical characteristics, nutrient dynamics, and microbial composition, diversity, and networks of soils were analyzed using standard techniques and 16S rRNA/ITS gene sequencing. Correlations between soil properties and microbes were assessed. Both MP types significantly altered soil characteristics, with PBAT-MP elevating pH and the levels of available phosphorus and potassium more than PE-MP. Microbial composition shifts occurred, with low-addition PBAT-MP promoting plastic-degrading genera. The assessment of α/β-diversity indicated that PBAT-MP predominantly influenced fungi while PE-MP impacted bacteria. An examination of microbial co-occurrence networks highlighted that PE-MP primarily disrupted fungal interactions, whereas PBAT-MP streamlined network complexity. Correlation analyses revealed that PBAT-MP promoted fungal diversity/network resilience correlating to nutrients. PE-MP and PBAT-MP significantly altered native soil/microbe relationships. PBAT-MP may exert greater, yet unknown, impacts over time through its biodegradation into newer and smaller fragments. Future research needs to integrate multi-omics and stable isotope science to elucidate the deep mechanistic impacts of degraded film-derived MPs on microbial ecological functions and biogeochemical cycles. Attention should also be paid to the long-term accumulation/transport of MPs in agricultural soils. Overall, this work deepens the impact and understanding of MPs from plastic film on sub-surface soil ecology. Furthermore, it provides a theoretical foundation for managing ‘white pollution’ in the film-covered farmlands of arid and semi-arid regions in China.

Abstract:Soil-biodegradable plastic has been increasingly used as mulches in agriculture, which provides not only agronomical benefits but also in-situ disposal and biodegradation options. However, soil-biodegradable plastic mulches inevitably fragment into micro- and nanoplastics during biodegradation, which can reside in soils or migrate into deep soils, where they may not degrade readily due to reduced microbial activity. To date, little is known about the transport of soil-biodegradable micro- and nanoplastics in soils. Here, we studied the transport of soil-biodegradable nanoplastics (∼200 nm) made of polybutylene adipate co-terephthalate (PBAT) in unsaturated sand (proxy for soil). Specifically, we studied the mobility of pristine and weathered PBAT nanoplastics in the absence and presence of proteins (positively charged lysozyme and negatively charged bovine serum albumin, pH = 7.7). We found that (1) both pristine and the weathered PBAT nanoplastics were mobile; (2) positively charged lysozyme formed protein-coronas around PBAT nanoplastics and inhibited the transport; and (3) decreased water saturation promoted the retention of PBAT nanoplastics via physical straining. These results suggest that soil-biodegradable nanoplastics fragmented from soil- biodegradable plastic mulches are mobile and may readily migrate into deep soil layers, but positively charged proteins and unsaturated flow would prevent such transport via formation of protein-corona and physical straining.

Abstract:The clinical and pathologic findings in 94 patients with cystosarcoma phyllodes were studied to determine which pathologic characteristics were related to clinical behavior. The neoplasm recurred in 28 patients and 15 patients (17%) died of metastatic cystosarcoma. Most recurrences occurred within 2 years of initial surgery and all patients who died of cystosarcoma did so within 6 years. No tumor less than 4 cm in diameter or having fewer than 3 mitotic figures per 10 hpf in the areas of greatest mitotic activity proved fatal. Other microscopic features associated with a low risk of recurrence or of death were pushing margins (one death in 39 examples) and minimal cytologic atypism of the stromal cells (two deaths in 30 examples). No one feature was wholly reliable and a clearcut separation of benign from malignant tumors could not be made. Although axillary lymph nodes were enlarged in 17% of patients, metastasis to them occurred in not more than three instances (one histologically proved) and therefore radical mastectomy or routine axillary lymph node dissection is not worthwhile. Wide local excision for small cystosarcomas and simple mastectomy for larger ones is recommended. In addition, low axillary dissection should be considered in patients having clinically enlarged axillary lymph nodes and tumors larger than 4 cm if there is marked atypism of stromal cells or high mitotic activity, as determined by microscopic evaluation of the cystosarcoma.
Cotransport of Microplastics and Sulfanilamide Antibiotics in Groundwater: the Impact of MP/SA Ratio and Aquifer Media

Abstract:The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of the aquifer media, structure type, and initial concentration ratio of contaminants on the cotransport behavior of microplastics (MPs) and sulfanilamide antibiotics (SAs) through a series of one-dimensional column experiments in groundwater. Under a single suspension system, the relative mass recovery rates of fine sand, medium sand, and coarse sand were 25.65%, 37.50%, and 57.91%, respectively. The breakthrough curve of MPs showed a weak and slow upward trend, indicating that the migration of MPs in aqueous media is mainly blocked by the surface. The migration results of different structure type on SAs (ST, SM, SM2, SMX) in a single suspension system indicated that the deposition rate coefficients (k(c)) of the four SAs were 1.23 x 10(-1), 9.09 x 10(-2), 1.11 x 10(-1), and 8.87 x 10(-2). Under a binary suspension system (MPs:ST = 1:1), the maximum effluent concentration (MEC) of MPs in fine sand, medium sand, and coarse sand increased to 0.52, 0.64, and 0.88, respectively, and the relative mass recovery rates of ST were 22.79%, 23.59%, 20.25%. This results show that the coexistence of MPs and SAs significantly promotes the migration of MPs and inhibits that of SAs. It is mainly because of their carrier action, adsorption sites and additional deposit sites for MPs through SAs pre-deposition on media. When the initial concentration ratio was 2:1, the particles had the highest Zeta potential (-48.3 mV) and the highest potential barrier (3200 kBT), leading to the formation of complex aggregates (MPs-SAs-MPs) owing to the aggregation of colloidal MPs. The increase in the volume and number of MPs-SAs co-aggregates on the surface of the media as the initial concentration of MPs increases, which was mainly due to the disappearance of surface blocking effect and the occurrence of filtering maturation effect.
Effects of solution chemistry and humic acid on transport and deposition of aged microplastics in unsaturated porous media

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) are susceptible to aging in the environment, and aged MPs are highly migratory in soil due to their smaller particle size and more negative surface charge, but the effects of soil environmental factors on the fate and transport of aged MPs are still unclear. In this study, the transport behavior of pristine/aged MPs in unsaturated sandy porous media was examined under different ionic strength (IS), cationic type (Na+, Ca2+) and humic acid (HA) conditions. The results indicated that the surface charge, surface oxygen-containing functional groups and surface morphology of MPs changed significantly after aging, and that the mobility of aged MPs was significantly enhanced than the pristine MPs under all test conditions. The retention amounts of pristine/aged MPs in unsaturated porous media increased with IS, and IS had a less inhibitory effect on the transport of aged MPs than pristine MPs. The mobility of pristine/aged MPs in Ca2+ solutions was significantly weaker than that in Na+ solutions due to enhanced straining and electrostatic adsorption. HA promoted the mobility of pristine/aged MPs in unsaturated porous media under all IS Na+ (1, 10, and 25 mM) solutions and lower IS (1 mM) Ca2+ solutions, and the ability of HA to promote the transport of aged MPs was significantly stronger than that of pristine MPs due to the higher adsorption of HA on the surface of aged MPs. However, at higher IS (10 mM) Ca2+ solution conditions, the bridging effect of Ca2+ led to the formation of HA-MPs complexes, which altered the hydrophobicity of the pristine/aged MPs surface and the pristine/aged MPs were mainly retained on the air-water interface (AWI). CFT theory and two-site kinetic retention models indicated that the retention of pristine/aged MPs in unsaturated media was dominated by monolayer adsorption, straining and clogging effects. The current research findings may provide insights into the fate and transport of aged MPs in soil and their potential risk of groundwater contamination.

Abstract:Soils are the largest reservoir of microplastics (MPs) on earth. Since MPs can remain in soils for a very long time, their effects are magnified. In this study, different concentrations of polyethylene (PE) MPs derived from commercial resins (0%, 1%, 7%, and 14%, represented as MP_0, MP_1, MP_7, and MP_14) were added to soils to assess the changes in the soils' chemical properties, enzyme activities, and bacterial communities during a 70-day incubation period. The results show that PE MP treatments with low concentrations differed from other treatments in terms of exchangeable Ca and Mg, whereas at high concentrations, the pH and availability of phosphate ions differed. Fluorescein diacetate (FDA), acid phosphatase (ACP), and N-acetyl-β-d-glucosaminidase (NAG) enzyme activities exhibited a dose-related trend with the addition of the PE MPs; however, the average FDA and ACP activities were significantly affected only by MP_14. Changes in the microbial communities were observed at both the phylum and family levels with all PE MP treatments. It was revealed that even a low dosage of PE MPs in soils can affect the functional microbes, and a greater impact is observed on those that can survive in polluted environments with limited resources.
Polyethylene microplastics interfere with the nutrient cycle in water-plant-sediment systems

Abstract:Increasing microplastic (MP) pollution and its effects on aquatic systems have become a global issue; however, the impact of MPs on biogeochemical cycles is poorly understood. A simulation study was performed to analyse the influence of polyethylene (PE) microplastics on the morphological, physiological, and stoichiometric (C, N, P) characteristics of submerged plants, and to investigate their effects on the nutrient cycle and microbial community in freshwater sediment. The results showed that PE-MPs treatments significantly decreased leaf nitrogen and carbon contents. Exposure to 1% PE-MPs suppressed the plant height, total biomass, root activity, and relative growth rate of Vallisneria natans. Decrease in dissolved oxygen (DO) concentrations (19.93-40.26%) were observed in the 1% PE-MPs treatment group compared to that in the control between 1 and 6 days. The activities of enzymes (ammonia monooxygenase and nitrate reductase) related to the nitrogen cycle were significantly altered by the addition of PE-MPs. We found that PE-MPs acted as obstacle disruptors, resulting in a reduction in the release of nitrogen and phosphorus from the sediment to the overlying water. This is because PE-MPs significantly alter the composition and metabolic properties of the microbial communities in sediments, the plant growth, and the nutrient cycle. These findings helped evaluate the impacts of PE-MPs on the water-plant-sediment system and on the biogeochemical cycles of the freshwater ecosystems.

Abstract:Global concern continues to mount regarding the accumulation of microplastics (MPs) in soil. However, little is known about how various types of MPs influence the properties of soil ecosystems. Here, we evaluated the effects of six different types of MPs, including low-density polyethylene (LDPE), polyamide (PA), polystyrene (PS), polyhydroxy-alkanoates (PHA), polybutadiene styrene (PBS), and polylactide (PLA), on soil physicochemical properties, enzyme activities, and microbial communities. At the end of a 230-day soil incubation, we observed significant changes in soil moisture content, soil organic carbon, pH, NH4+-N, NO3--N, and available phosphorus. The addition of MPs had a significant influence on the activities of soil β-glucosidase, acid phosphatase, urease, and fluorescein diacetate hydrolase, with effects varying with MP type. Results of 16S rRNA gene high throughput sequencing showed that MP exposure had little effect on soil microbial alpha diversity, but that PHA contamination significantly reduced ACE, Chao1, and Shannon index values. MP contamination also altered soil microbial community composition. In particular, the relative abundance of Firmicutes increased significantly while the relative abundance of Actinobacteriota, Proteobacteria (especially the nitrogen-fixing rhizobia), and Acidobacteriota decreased following exposure to PHA. Redundancy analysis showed that acid phosphatase and pH were the two main environmental factors affecting bacterial community structure at the phylum and order levels. Furthermore, Tax4Fun2 analysis found that MP treatment disrupted fundamental bacterial metabolic pathways. Our findings indicate that different types of MPs can affect soil fertility, bacterial community structure, and function in various ways, and highlight that biodegradable MPs may alter soil bacterial communities more than conventional MPs.

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs)-induced changes in soil nutrient cycling and microbial activity may pose a potential risk to soil ecosystem. Although some studies have explored these topics, there is still a large space for exploration and a relative lack of research on the mechanism by which soil health and its functions are affected by these changes. Thus, this study investigated the effects of polyethylene (PE) MPs with two particle sizes (13 μm and 130 μm) at five concentrations (0%, 1%, 3%, 6% and 10%, w/w) on soil biochemical properties and ecosystem function. The findings revealed that the exposure to 13 μm MPs significantly reduced soil respiration (Res) rate, β-glucosidase (Glu) and catalase (CAT) activity, which accompanied with enhanced urease activity and decreased soil pH, available phosphorus (AP), dissolved reactive phosphorus (DRP), dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and available potassium (AK) content in most cases. However, 130 μm MPs exerted negligible influence on the DOC and DRP content, Glu and CAT activity. High concentrations of 130 μm MPs significantly reduced soil pH, total dissolved nitrogen (TDN), AP and AK content, but significantly increased soil Res rate. Overall, soil ecosystem function was significantly reduced by the addition of MPs. The Res rate, soil AP and DRP content and Glu activity were the most important predictors of soil ecosystem function. We found that the risk posed by MPs to soil ecosystem function was dose-dependent and size-dependent. These findings underscore that MPs can alter soil functions related to soil nutrient cycling and provide further insights into MPs behavior in agroecosystems.

Abstract:Terrestrial soils are not only a large reservoir for Microplastics (MPs), but also a possible entrance to the subsurface environment, posing potential risks to the subterranean habitats and groundwater. In this study, we examined the vertical transport of MPs of four polymers, i.e., polyethylene (PE), polyethylene terephthalate (PET), polypropylene (PP) and polyamide (PA), in porous sand media driven by wet-dry cycling. The effects of polymer properties, MP size, sand particle size, wet-dry cycles, and dissolved organic matter (DOM) on their migration behavior were investigated. Surface hydrophobicity showed a strong positive correlation with MP mobility, with PA exhibiting the greatest movement potential, followed by PE, PET, and PP. The penetration depth of MP particles increased with decreasing MP particle size (dMP) and increasing sand diameter (dsand). MP particles migrated deeper in sand media when dMP/dsand < 0.11. Furthermore, frequent wet-dry cycles and the presence of DOM promoted the vertical migration of MPs in the sand. The results revealed multiple factors influencing the vertical migration of MPs in sand, which is instructive for understanding the ecological risk of MPs in potentially contaminated soil (e.g., farmland with long-term mulching) to the subsurface environment and potential negative impact to public health.
