Abstract:Global concern continues to mount regarding the accumulation of microplastics (MPs) in soil. However, little is known about how various types of MPs influence the properties of soil ecosystems. Here, we evaluated the effects of six different types of MPs, including low-density polyethylene (LDPE), polyamide (PA), polystyrene (PS), polyhydroxy-alkanoates (PHA), polybutadiene styrene (PBS), and polylactide (PLA), on soil physicochemical properties, enzyme activities, and microbial communities. At the end of a 230-day soil incubation, we observed significant changes in soil moisture content, soil organic carbon, pH, NH4+-N, NO3--N, and available phosphorus. The addition of MPs had a significant influence on the activities of soil β-glucosidase, acid phosphatase, urease, and fluorescein diacetate hydrolase, with effects varying with MP type. Results of 16S rRNA gene high throughput sequencing showed that MP exposure had little effect on soil microbial alpha diversity, but that PHA contamination significantly reduced ACE, Chao1, and Shannon index values. MP contamination also altered soil microbial community composition. In particular, the relative abundance of Firmicutes increased significantly while the relative abundance of Actinobacteriota, Proteobacteria (especially the nitrogen-fixing rhizobia), and Acidobacteriota decreased following exposure to PHA. Redundancy analysis showed that acid phosphatase and pH were the two main environmental factors affecting bacterial community structure at the phylum and order levels. Furthermore, Tax4Fun2 analysis found that MP treatment disrupted fundamental bacterial metabolic pathways. Our findings indicate that different types of MPs can affect soil fertility, bacterial community structure, and function in various ways, and highlight that biodegradable MPs may alter soil bacterial communities more than conventional MPs.

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) pollution and dissolved organic matter (DOM) affect soil quality and functions. However, the effect of MPs on DOM and underlying mechanisms have not been clarified, which poses a challenge to maintaining soil health. Under environmentally relevant conditions, we evaluated the major role of polypropylene particles at four micron-level sizes (20, 200, and 500 μm and mixed) in regulating changes in soil DOM content. We found that an increase in soil aeration by medium and high-intensity (>0.5%) MPs may reduce NH4+ leaching by accelerating soil nitrification. However, MPs have a positive effect on soil nutrient retention through the adsorption of PO43- (13.30-34.46%) and NH4+ (9.03-19.65%) and their leached dissolved organic carbon (MP-leached dissolved organic carbon, MP-DOC), thereby maintaining the dynamic balance of soil nutrients. The regulating ion (Ca2+) is also an important competitor in the MP-DOM adsorption system, and changes in its intensity are dynamically involved in the adsorption process. These findings can help predict the response of soil processes, especially nutrient cycling, to persistent anthropogenic stressors, improve risk management policies on MPs, and facilitate the protection of soil health and function, especially in future agricultural contexts.

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs)-induced changes in soil nutrient cycling and microbial activity may pose a potential risk to soil ecosystem. Although some studies have explored these topics, there is still a large space for exploration and a relative lack of research on the mechanism by which soil health and its functions are affected by these changes. Thus, this study investigated the effects of polyethylene (PE) MPs with two particle sizes (13 μm and 130 μm) at five concentrations (0%, 1%, 3%, 6% and 10%, w/w) on soil biochemical properties and ecosystem function. The findings revealed that the exposure to 13 μm MPs significantly reduced soil respiration (Res) rate, β-glucosidase (Glu) and catalase (CAT) activity, which accompanied with enhanced urease activity and decreased soil pH, available phosphorus (AP), dissolved reactive phosphorus (DRP), dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and available potassium (AK) content in most cases. However, 130 μm MPs exerted negligible influence on the DOC and DRP content, Glu and CAT activity. High concentrations of 130 μm MPs significantly reduced soil pH, total dissolved nitrogen (TDN), AP and AK content, but significantly increased soil Res rate. Overall, soil ecosystem function was significantly reduced by the addition of MPs. The Res rate, soil AP and DRP content and Glu activity were the most important predictors of soil ecosystem function. We found that the risk posed by MPs to soil ecosystem function was dose-dependent and size-dependent. These findings underscore that MPs can alter soil functions related to soil nutrient cycling and provide further insights into MPs behavior in agroecosystems.

Abstract:Although the increasing accumulation of microplastics (MPs) in terrestrial soil ecosystems has aroused worldwide concern, research remains limited on their potential impacts on soil processes and ecosystem functionality. Here, through a 41-day microcosm experiment, we found that polylactic acid (PLA), low-density polyethylene (LDPE), and polypropylene (PP) MPs consistently increased soil carbon nutrients and pH but had varying effects on soil nitrogen nutrients and the chemodiversity of dissolved organic matter (DOM). Different treatments led to notable shifts in the α-diversity and composition of soil microbial community, with phyla Proteobacteria and Ascomycota consistently enriched by MPs regardless of polymer type. The emissions of CO2 and N2O were suppressed by MPs in most cases, which in combination led to a decline in global warming potential. LDPE and 1 - 1.5 % of PLA MPs significantly improved the multifunctionality of the soil ecosystem, while PP and 0.5 % of PLA MPs exerted an opposite effect. Soil total organic carbon, pH, DOM molecular mass and condensation degree, and CO2 emissions were identified as the most important variables for predicting soil ecosystem multifunctionality. Results of this study can extend the current understanding of the impacts of MPs on soil biogeochemical cycling and ecosystem functionality.
Addition of biodegradable microplastics alters the quantity and chemodiversity of dissolved organic matter in latosol

Abstract:Dissolved organic matter (DOM) chemodiversity plays an important role in regulating nutrient cycles and contaminant behavior in soil. However, how biodegradable microplastic (MPs) affect the DOM chemodiversity is still unknown, although developing biodegradable plastics are regarded as a promising strategy to minimize the risks of MPs residues in soil. Here, with the common poly (butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) as the model, the molecular effect of biodegradable MPs on soil DOM was explored by adding 0%, 5% and 10% (w/w) of PBAT to tropical latosol, respectively. The results showed that PBAT addition increased microbial activity and exoenzyme activity (e.g., rhizopus oryzae lipase, invertase and cellulose). As a result, the quantity and chemodiversity of soil DOM were changed. The multispectroscopic characterization showed that PBAT addition significantly increased the DOC molecules in soil, including condensed aromatic-like substances and carbohydrates. In contrast, the TDN molecules with high bioavailability and low aromaticity, such as amino acids, were decreased. The multivariate statistical analysis indicated that there were three mechanisms that drove the shift in DOM chemodiversity. Firstly, the degradation of PBAT by rhizopus oryzae lipase facilitated the release of exogenous aromatic molecules. Secondly, PBAT decomposition stimulated the selective consumption of native N-rich molecules by soil microbes. Thirdly, PBAT accelerated the enzymatic transformation of native aliphatic CHx and cellulose toward humic substances. In addition, concentration effect was also observed in the study that high-concentration PBAT were more likely to trigger the molecular shift in DOM chemodiversity. These findings provided a new insight into the impact of biodegradable MPs on soil DOM chemodiversity at molecular level, which will be beneficial to understanding the fate and biochemical reactivity of DOM in MPs-polluted soil.

Abstract:Soil is the largest environmental reservoir of microplastics (MPs) on the earth. Incremental accumulation of MPs in the soil can cause significant changes in soil physicochemical and microbial traits, which may in turn interfere with soil biogeochemical processes such as carbon cycling. With published research regarding MPs impacts on soil carbon cycling growing rapidly, a systematic review summarizing the current knowledge and highlighting future research needs is warranted. As carbon-rich polymers, MPs can contribute to soil organic carbon (SOC) storage via degradation and leaching. MPs can also affect the humification of dissolved organic matters (DOM), consequently influencing the stability of SOC. Exposure to MPs can cause substantial impacts on the growth performance, litter decomposition, and root secretion of terrestrial plants as well as soil microbial carbon turnover, inducing changes in the formation of SOC. The presence of MPs has contrasting effects on the emissions of both CO 2 and CH 4 from the soil. The diverse effects of MPs on soil carbon metabolism could be partly attributed to the varying changes in soil microbial community structure, functional gene expression, and enzyme activity under MPs exposure. Further research is still highly needed to clarify the pathways of MPs impacts on soil carbon cycling and the driving biological and physicochemical factors behind these processes.

Abstract:Microplastic contamination of soil has drawn increased attention due to the ecological harm it poses to the soil ecosystem. However, little is known about how microplastic particle sizes affect soil chemical properties and microbial communities, particularly in purple soil. In this study, a four-week incubation experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of polyethylene microplastics (PE MPs) with different particle sizes (i.e., 300 and 600 μm) on soil properties, extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), enzyme activities, and microbial communities in purple soil. When compared to 600 μm-PE MPs, 300 μm-PE MPs reduced contents of dissolved organic matter (DOM), EPS, and β-1,4-N-acetylglucosaminidase (NAG) activity, but increased the cation exchange capacity (CEC). High-throughput 16S rRNA gene sequencing revealed that the 300 μm-PE MPs resulted in an increase in the phylum Nitrospirae, which is associated with microplastic degradation. The data implied that smaller PE MPs improved the growth of polyethylene-degrading bacteria by adsorbing more EPS and DOM, resulting in the degradation of microplastics. Co-occurrence network analysis revealed that smaller PE MPs had lower toxicity to microbial populations than larger PE MPs, increasing the stability of the network. CEC and β-1,4-glucosidase (BG) were found to be the two major factors affecting the microbial communities by redundancy analysis (RDA). The study highlighted how microplastic particle sizes affect soil bacterial communities and soil functions.

Abstract:Soils always receive microplastics (MPs) from plastic mulching, compost, and sewage irrigation, but the effects of MPs on soil environment remain largely unexplored. The objectives of this study were to investigate the effects of three MPs (membranous polyethylene (PE), fibrous polypropylene (PP), and microsphere PP) on enzyme activities and microbial community structure in one loamy and sandy soil. The concentration of microsphere PP (2 mg g‐1) was one‐tenth of those of the other two MPs (20 mg g‐1). The results showed that the effects of three MPs on urease, dehydrogenase and alkaline phosphatase activities followed the order: fibrous PP > membranous PE > microsphere PP, membranous PE > microsphere PP > fibrous PP and fibrous PP > microsphere PP > membranous PE, respectively. Results from high‐throughput sequencing of 16S rRNA revealed that the membranous PE and fibrous PP raised the alpha‐diversities of the soil microbiota, whereas the diversity indexes of microbiota on MPs surfaces were significantly lower than those in the amended soils. MPs significantly altered the microbial community structure, especially for the enrichment of Acidobacteria and Bacteroidetes, the depletion of Deinococcus‐Thermus and Chloroflexi. Aeromicrobium, Streptomyces, Mycobacterium, Janibacter, Nocardia, Arthrobacter were prone to inhabit on the MPs surfaces.

Abstract:Microplastics have attracted global concern due to its potential threat to ecosystems. The effects of microplastics (MPs) on soil ecosystems, especially for microbial communities, have been reported in an increasing number of studies. However, these studies mostly focus on soil bacteria and less on fungus which play a critical role in soil ecosystems. Here, we profiled the effects of polyethylene MPs on fungal community in soil and focus on three primary features: diversity, composition structure, and co-occurrence network patterns. The results indicated the alpha diversity indexes presented by Chao1 and Shannon of fungal communities in soil were not significantly affected (almost 2000 pieces/kg soil) under PE MPs exposure, whereas the beta diversity was significantly different between the soil with and without PE MPs amended on 30 days. Several taxa inclusive of fungus with the potential to degrade plastics were enriched in soil with PE MPs amended. In addition, co-occurrence network analysis revealed the associations of soil fungal communities were more complex and tightened, and the abundance of saprotrophic fungi was increased due to PE MPs exposure. Our study demonstrated that microplastics could alter soil fungal communities and potentially affect the biogeochemical cycles. The findings provided valuable clues to enhance our understanding of the impact of MPs on soil ecosystems.

Abstract:Chemodiversity of dissolved organic matter (DOM) is a crucial factor controlling soil nutrient availability, greenhouse gas emissions, and pollutant migration. Microplastics (MPs) are widespread pollutants in terrestrial ecosystems in many regions. However, the effects of MPs on DOM chemodiversity are not sufficiently understood, particularly under different types of polymers. Using UV–Vis spectroscopy, 3D fluorescence spectroscopy, and Fourier-transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry, the effects of three prevalent MPs [polyethylene, polystyrene, and polyvinyl chloride (PVC)] on the chemical properties and composition of soil DOM were investigated via a 310-d soil incubation experiment. The results showed that MPs reduced the aromatic and hydrophobic soil DOM components by more than 20%, with PVC MPs having the greatest effect. Furthermore, as MP contents increase, the humification level of soil DOM significantly decreases. MPs increased DOM molecules with no heteroatom by 8.3%–14.0%, but decreased DOM molecules with nitrogen content by 17.0%–47.8%. This may be because MPs cause positive "priming effect," resulting in the breakdown of bioavailable components in soil DOM. This is also related to MPs changing microbial richness and diversity and enriching microbial communities involved in lignin compositions degradation. In the presence of MPs, soil DOM chemodiversity depended on soil pH, electrical conductivity, dissolved organic carbon, soil organic matter, bacterial Shannon, and fungal Chao index. Specifically, DOM in MP-contaminated soils featured more lipids and less condensed aromatics and proteins/amino sugars, thereby conferring a lower DOM aromaticity and higher lability.

Polyethylene microplastic and soil nitrogen dynamics: Unraveling the links between functional genes, microbial communities, and transformation processes

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) have emerged as pollutants of growing concern due to their potential threat to soil ecosystems. While some studies have investigated the effects of MPs on soil nitrogen content, the underlying physicochemical and microbial driving mechanisms still need to be explored. In this study, a six-month incubation experiment was conducted with varying polyethylene MP addition rates: CK (0%, mass ratio), MP0.5 (0.5%), MP1 (1%), MP2 (2%), MP4 (4%), and MP8 (8%). The experiment aimed to examine the effects of MPs on soil nitrogen content, physicochemical properties, nitrogen cycling-related genes, microorganisms, and gross nitrogen transformation rates. The results revealed no significant changes in soil total nitrogen and dissolved total nitrogen. However, dissolved organic nitrogen significantly decreased by 16.00-54.60% following MP addition, while ammonium (NH4+-N, 45.71-271.43%) and nitrate (NO3--N, 43.15-209.54%) nitrogen and microbial biomass nitrogen (46.02-123.70%) significantly increased. Soil pH, bulk density, and soil porosity decreased after MP addition, while soil carbon contents, water-stable macroaggregates, and redox potential increased. The soil microbial community structure changed significantly, and microbial diversity increased under MP treatment. MP addition significantly altered the abundance of soil nitrogen cycling functional genes. The relative abundance of nitrogen fixation and denitrification genes decreased with increasing MP addition rates, while organic degradation and synthesis genes increased. The soil nitrogen cycling functional microbial composition shifted dramatically with increased MP addition. Networks with high addition rates (MP2 +MP4 +MP8) exhibited more total nodes, total links, negative links, node degrees, and modules but shorter average path distances and lower modularity than those with low addition rates (CK +MP0.5 +MP1), reflecting increased network complexity induced by MPs. The gross ammonification rate, NH4+-N consumption and immobilization rates, and NO3--N immobilization rate increased, while the gross nitrification rate and net nitrification rate exhibited an initial increase followed by a decrease with increasing MP addition rates, peaking at MP2. Furthermore, redundancy analysis and structural equation modeling demonstrated that soil physicochemical properties significantly affected soil nitrogen cycling genes and microorganisms, ultimately altering nitrogen content. In conclusion, polyethylene MPs promoted soil nitrogen mineralization and transformation and changed the related functional microorganism community structure, exhibiting a noticeable dose-effect relationship. This study provides deeper insight into the effects of MPs on soil nitrogen cycling.
Effects of Conventional Non-Biodegradable Film-Derived Microplastics and New Biodegradable Film-Derived Microplastics on Soil Properties and Microorganisms after Entering Sub-Surface Soil

Abstract:Plastic film mulching, widely used in agriculture, leads to microplastic (MP) pollution in soils. While biodegradable polybutylene adipate terephthalate (PBAT) films may offer a solution, their impacts on subsurface soils and microorganisms remain unclear. To investigate the effects of conventional non-biodegradable polyethylene (PE) and biodegradable PBAT MPs on the properties of sub-surface soils and microbial communities, MPs were added at varying doses in a field experiment and incubated for 160 days. Physicochemical characteristics, nutrient dynamics, and microbial composition, diversity, and networks of soils were analyzed using standard techniques and 16S rRNA/ITS gene sequencing. Correlations between soil properties and microbes were assessed. Both MP types significantly altered soil characteristics, with PBAT-MP elevating pH and the levels of available phosphorus and potassium more than PE-MP. Microbial composition shifts occurred, with low-addition PBAT-MP promoting plastic-degrading genera. The assessment of α/β-diversity indicated that PBAT-MP predominantly influenced fungi while PE-MP impacted bacteria. An examination of microbial co-occurrence networks highlighted that PE-MP primarily disrupted fungal interactions, whereas PBAT-MP streamlined network complexity. Correlation analyses revealed that PBAT-MP promoted fungal diversity/network resilience correlating to nutrients. PE-MP and PBAT-MP significantly altered native soil/microbe relationships. PBAT-MP may exert greater, yet unknown, impacts over time through its biodegradation into newer and smaller fragments. Future research needs to integrate multi-omics and stable isotope science to elucidate the deep mechanistic impacts of degraded film-derived MPs on microbial ecological functions and biogeochemical cycles. Attention should also be paid to the long-term accumulation/transport of MPs in agricultural soils. Overall, this work deepens the impact and understanding of MPs from plastic film on sub-surface soil ecology. Furthermore, it provides a theoretical foundation for managing ‘white pollution’ in the film-covered farmlands of arid and semi-arid regions in China.

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) can alter microbial communities and carbon (C) cycling in agricultural soils. However, the mechanism by which MPs affect the decomposition of microbe-driven soil organic matter remains unknown. We investigated the bacterial community succession and temporal turnover during soil organic matter decomposition in MP-amended paddy soils (none, low [0.01% w/w], or high [1% w/w]). We observed that MPs reduced the CO2 efflux rate on day 3 and subsequently promoted it on day 15 of incubation. This increased CO2 emission in MP-amended soil may be related to (i) enhanced hydrolase enzyme activities or; (ii) shifts in the Shannon diversity, positive group interactions, and temporal turnover rates (from 0.018 to 0.040). CO2 efflux was positively correlated (r > 0.8, p < 0.01) with Ruminiclostridium_1, Mobilitalea, Eubacterium xylanophilum, Sporomusa, Anaerobacteriu, Papillibacter, Syntrophomonadaceae, and Ruminococcaceae_ UCG_013 abundance in soil with high MPs, indicating that these genera play important roles in soil organic C mineralization. These results demonstrate how microorganisms adapt to MPs and thus influence the C cycle in MP-polluted paddy ecosystems.

Abstract:In this study, the interaction between primary/secondary PE MPs and soil – microbiome - crop complex system and PE MPs enrichment behavior in crops were studied by using the self-developed quantitative characterization method of Eu-MPs and in situ zymography. The results demonstrated for the first time the enrichment effect of micron-sized PE (> 10 μm) in crops, manifested as roots>leaves>stems. Primary PE MPs significantly increased soil TN, TC, SOM and β-glu activity and inhibited Phos activity. Age-PE MPs significantly reduced soil TN, TP, β-glu and Phos activities and also have significant inhibitory effects on plant height, stem diameter, and leaf dry weight of maize. Age-PE MPs significantly affected soil microbial diversity, mainly caused by bacterial genera such as UTCFX1, Sphingomonas, Subgroup-6 and Gemmatimonas. Age-PE MPs also affected some metabolism related to microbial community composition and maize growth, including Glycerolipid, Citrate cycle (TCA cycle), C5-Branched dibasic acid, Arginine and proline, Tyrosine metabolism, pentose phosphate pathway, Valine, leucine and isoleucine biosynthesis. These research results indicated that the PE MPs, which are widely present in farmland soils, can affect crop growth, soil microbial community and metabolic function after aging, thus affecting agroecosystems and terrestrial biodiversity.

Abstract:Abstract An estimated 258 million tons of plastic enter the soil annually. Joining persistent types of microplastic (MP), there will be an increasing demand for biodegradable plastics. There are still many unknowns about plastic pollution by either type, and one large gap is the fate and composition of dissolved organic matter (DOM) released from MPs as well as how they interact with soil microbiomes in agricultural systems. In this study, polyethylene MPs, photoaged to different degrees, and virgin polylactic acid MPs were added to agricultural soil at different levels and incubated for 100 days to address this knowledge gap. We find that, upon MP addition, labile components of low aromaticity were degraded and transformed, resulting in increased aromaticity and oxidation degree, reduced molecular diversity, and changed nitrogen and sulfur contents of soil DOM. Terephthalate, acetate, oxalate, and L-lactate in DOM released by polylactic acid MPs and 4-nitrophenol, propanoate, and nitrate in DOM released by polyethylene MPs were the major molecules available to the soil microbiomes. The bacteria involved in the metabolism of DOM released by MPs are mainly concentrated in Proteobacteria, Actinobacteriota, and Bacteroidota, and fungi are mainly in Ascomycota and Basidiomycota. Our study provides an in-depth understanding of the microbial transformation of DOM released by MPs and its effects of DOM evolution in agricultural soils.

Abstract:With the extensive use of polymer-coated fertilizer, microplastics (MPs) pollution in agricultural soil raises worldwide concerns. While very few studies focalized the effects of polymer-coated fertilizer MPs exposure to acid-contaminated soil. Changes in soil properties, enzymatic activity, and microbial community structure were investigated via the addition of 0.1 % and 1 % ( w /w) of polyethylene (PE) and polyurethane (PU) in acid soil. The results showed that two types of MPs addition decreased soil pH and MBC contents, stimulated DTPA (cadmium extracted by diethylenetriamine-pentaacetic acid)-Cd (extracted cadmium) contents, β-glucosidase (BG) and N -acetyl-b-glucosaminidase (NAG) activities significantly. The diversity and richness of fungi was dropped sharply after the addition of 0.1 % PE and PU MPs, but there was the opposite result in fungi. The relative abundance of phylum Mortierellomycota increased significantly in 1 % PE and PU treatments, inferring that the fungus associated with the degradation of recalcitrant carbon source in soil enhanced by the input of MPs. Overall, our research demonstrated that there is still a risk of increased metal bioavailability with the addition of polymer-coated fertilizer MPs, but the fluctuation of soil enzymatic activities and microbial community structure were much more pronounced affected by soil properties via the addition of PE and PU in soil.

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) may interfere with the primary ecological processes of soil, which has become a growing global environmental issue. In terrestrial ecosystems, litter decomposition is the main process of nutrient cycling, particularly for carbon (C) and nitrogen (N). However, how microplastic pollution could alter wetland litter decomposition has barely been investigated. Therefore, a 100-day lab-scale litter decomposition experiment was conducted using Shengjin Lake wetland soil, which was treated with two types of MPs (polyethylene, PE and polyvinyl chloride, PVC) at three concentrations (0.1%, 0.5%, and 2.5%, w/w), to explore if and how MPs accumulation could affect wetland litter decomposition processes. According to our research, the PE and PVC greatly slowed the decomposition rate of wetland litter. Compared with control treatments, the addition of MPs decreased litter quality (high C:N), reduced litter decomposition-related soil enzyme activity, decreased the diversity of bacteria, and altered microbial community structure and potential functional gene abundance linked to litter decomposition. These findings revealed that MPs could affect the main process of C and N cycling in wetland ecosystems, providing important cues for further research on the wetland ecosystem function.
Effects of microplastics on greenhouse gas emissions and the microbial community in fertilized soil

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) are characterized by small particle sizes (<5 mm) and are widely distributed in the soil environment. To date, little research has been conducted on investigating the effects of MPs on the soil microbial community, which plays a vital role in biogeochemical cycling. In the present study, we investigate the influence of two particle sizes of MPs on dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and its relative functional groups, fluxes of greenhouse gases (GHGs), and the bacterial and fungal communities in fertilized soil. The results showed that a 5% concentration of MPs had no significant effect on soil DOC, whereas the formation of aromatic functional groups was accelerated. In fertilized soil, the existence of MPs decreased the global warming potential (GWP) as a result of a reduction in N2O emissions during the first three days. A potential mechanism for this reduction in N2O emissions might be that MPs inhibited the phylum Chloroflexi, Rhodoplanes genera, and increased the abundance of Thermoleophilia on day 3. An increase in N2O emissions was observed on day 30, mainly due to the acceleration of the NO3- reduction and a decrease in the abundance of Gemmatimonadacea. The CH4 uptake was significantly correlated with Hyphomicrobiaceae on day 3 and Rhodomicrobium on day 30. In soil with MPs, Actinobacteria replaced Proteobacteria as the dominant phylum. Larger MPs increased the richness (Chao1) and abundance-based coverage estimators (ACE) and diversity (Shannon) of the bacterial community on day 3, whereas these decreased on day 30. The richness and diversity of the fungal community were also reduced on days 3 and 30. Smaller MPs increased the community richness and diversity of both bacterial and fungal communities in fertilized soil. Our findings suggest that MPs have selective effects on microbes and can potentially have a serious impact on terrestrial biogeochemical cycles.

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) are persistent organic pollutants globally, with a continuous increase in MP wastes near and away from the regions of human activities. Studies to date aimed to explore the impact of MPs on ecosystems, but the area of research could not go beyond environmental pollution caused by MPs. To address the menace of MPs, scientists need to pay enough attention to the biogeochemical cycles, microbial communities, and functional microorganisms. Hence, this study aimed to evaluate the impact of adding 0.3% (mass ratio) [low-concentration (LC) group] and 1% [high-concentration (HC) group] of polyamide (PA) MP to the soil microenvironment with regard to the aforementioned parameters. PA MP decreased the soil microbial diversity (Shannon and Simpson indices, P < 0.05). At the phylum level, PA MP increased the abundance of Acidobacteria, Firmicutes, and Crenarchaeota (P < 0.05); at the genus level, it enhanced that of Geobacter, Thiobacillus, Pseudomonas, and Bradyrhizobium (P < 0.01) while decreased that of Bacillus, Flavisolibacter, Geothrix, and Pseudarthrobacter (P < 0.05). PA MP affected the carbon (C) cycle. PA MP accelerated the soil C fixation by enhancing the abundance of the genes accA and pccA. The LC PA MP accelerated organic C degradation and methane metabolism by changing the abundance of mnp, chiA, mcrA, pmoA, and mmoX genes, while the HC PA MP inhibited them with increasing the experimental time. Regarding the effects of PA on the nitrogen (N) cycle, the PA MP promoted N assimilation and ammonification by increasing the abundance of the genes gdh and ureC, the impact of PA MP on N fixation and denitrification depended on its concentration and treating time. This study showed that PA MP impacted the microbial consortium, it also affected the C and N cycles and its effect depended on its concentration and the treating time.

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) are major global environmental pollutants that have been extensively detected in agroecosystems. However, researches on their distribution and fates in farmland as well as their potential impacts on soil ecosystems are limited, especially studies on the influences of MPs on enzymes associated with carbon (C), nitrogen (N), and phosphorus (P) cycling and microbial nutrient limitations characterized by enzymatic stoichiometry are missing. In this study, we investigated the MPs characteristics under different continuous mulching management years (3, 6, 10, 15, and 20a) of tobacco fields in Enshi Prefecture, China, and identified the mechanisms of MPs pollution on soil microbial nutrient limitations. The results showed that the abundance of MPs varied from 647 to 2840 items/kg. Films, fibers and small-sized particles (0-1.0 mm) were the predominant types and size, respectively, and increased significantly with the increase of planting years. A vector analysis of enzyme activity suggested that microbial metabolism was limited both with C and P. The correlation analysis demonstrated that MPs pollution and soil properties were significantly linked to microbial nutrient limitations. Meanwhile, partial least squares path model (PLS-PM) revealed that MPs abundance exacerbated microbial limitation mainly by directly affecting soil microbial properties, followed by soil physical properties and soil nutrients, whereas MPs size and shapes indirectly exacerbated microbial nutrient limitation by significantly influencing MPs abundance. These results demonstrated that contamination of soil with MPs may have deleterious effects on soil key functions related to microbial metabolism, nutrient cycling, etc. Changes in soil properties and functions can damage plant growth and development, which may further affect crop yield and quality. This study provided a new theoretical basis for the response of soil microbial metabolism to MPs pollution and facilitated a better understanding and estimation of the environmental behavior and ecological risk of MPs in agricultural fields.
