Abstract:We demonstrate a facile route to obtain high and broad-band circular polarization of electroluminescence in single-layer polymer OLEDs. As a light-emitting material we use a donor-acceptor polyfluorene with enantiomerically pure chiral side-chains. We show that upon thermal annealing the polymer self-assembles into a multidomain cholesteric film. By varying the thickness of the polymer emitting layer, we achieve high levels of circular polarization of electroluminescence (up to 40% excess of right-handed polarization), which are the highest reported for polymer OLEDs not using chiral dopants or alignment layers. Mueller matrix ellipsometry shows strong optical anisotropies in the film, indicating that the circular polarization of luminescence arises mainly after the photon has been generated, through selective scattering and birefringence correlated in the direction of the initial linear polarization of the photon. Our work demonstrates that chirally substituted conjugated polymers can combine photonic and semiconducting properties in advanced optoelectronic devices.
Amplified Circularly Polarized Electroluminescence Behavior Triggered by Helical Nanofibers from Chiral Co‐assembly Polymers

Abstract:AbstractTwo chiral binaphthyl polymers (R/S‐P1 and R/S‐P2) with different dihedral angles of the binaphthyl moiety were chosen as chiral inducers to construct chiral co‐assemblies with an achiral pyrene‐naphthalimide dye (NPy) and then acted as the emitting layer (EML) of circularly polarized electroluminescence (CP‐EL) devices. The anchored dihedral angle of R/S‐P2 not only exhibited the enhanced chirality signal, but also had a strong chirality‐inducing effect on the achiral NPy dye in the chiral co‐assembly (R/S‐P2)0.6‐(NPy)0.4. After annealing at 120 °C, the CPL signal (|gem|) of ordered helical nano‐fibers (R/S‐P2)0.6‐(NPy)0.4 was amplified to 5.6×10−2, which was about 6‐fold larger than that of (R/S‐P1)0.6‐(NPy)0.4. The amplified gem value of (R/S‐P2)0.6‐(NPy)0.4 was due to the formation of a helical co‐assembly through the strong π–π stacking interaction between the R/S‐P2 and the achiral NPy. This kind of ordered helical nano‐fibers (R/S‐P2)0.6‐(NPy)0.4 acted as the EML of CP‐OLEDs, and achieved an excellent CP‐EL performance (|gEL|=4.8×10−2).
High Comprehensive Circularly Polarized Electroluminescence Performance Improved by Chiral Coassembled Host Materials

Abstract:Chiral coassembled host materials are first constructed through a strong π–π stacking interaction using an achiral conjugated pyridine‐based polymer acceptor doped with a chiral binaphthyl‐based donor. Significantly, the chiral coassembly hosts promote an achiral phosphorescence emitter to achieve red circularly polarized electroluminescence at 620 nm with a high external quantum efficiency of 4.1% and large |gEL| values of 0.014. Circularly polarized organic light‐emitting diodes are of great significance in 3D displays. However, achieving circularly polarized electroluminescence (CP‐EL) simultaneously with a large dissymmetry factor (gEL) and high efficiency still remains a formidable challenge. Herein, a facile and efficient strategy is developed for improving the performance of CP‐EL devices using device emitting layers of chiral coassembled helix nanofiber host materials. Chiral coassembled helix nanofiber host materials ((S‐/R‐2Cz)0.2‐(PFpy)0.8) could be smartly constructed through intermolecular π–π stacking interactions between the achiral conjugated pyridine‐based polymer acceptor (PFpy) and the chiral binaphthyl‐based donor (S‐/R‐2Cz). Significantly, the resulting chiral coassembled hosts (S‐/R‐2Cz)0.2‐(PFpy)0.8 greatly promote a commercially available achiral phosphorescence emitter to achieve solution‐processed red CP‐EL device performances at 620 nm with a high external quantum efficiency of 4.1% and a large |gEL| value of 0.014.

Abstract:Development of simple chiral materials with tunable circularly polarized photoluminescence (CPPL) and circularly polarized electroluminescence (CPEL) for efficient circularly polarized organic light-emitting diodes (CP-OLEDs) is the key toward future 3D displays. In this study, four pairs of chiral 1,2-diaminocyclohexane-based fluorescence enantiomers were efficiently prepared with high yields (up to 92%) and enantiomeric excesses (ee >99%). By the introduction of N-methyl, carbazole, and diphenylamine-donating groups, these materials showed multicolor CPPL and CPEL from blue (420 nm) to red (610 nm) with good thermal and conformational stability. The multilayer CP-OLEDs based on these enantiomers show high external quantum efficiency of up to 5.5% with low-efficiency roll-off and microimage circularly polarized electroluminescence with a dissymmetry factor (g(EL)) of up to -1.4 x 10(-3)/+1.3 x 10(-3). These results push forward the development of future multicolor circularly polarized electroluminescent materials.

Abstract:Recently, much attention has been paid to circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) organic light-emitting diodes (CP-OLEDs) from achiral fluorophores through an intermolecular chirality induction mechanism. In this paper, we developed a new strategy for CP-OLEDs of achiral fluorophores induced by helical co-assembly between chiral polymers and an achiral fluorophore. In this paper, we synthesized three chiral 1,1'-binaphthyl-based polymers (R/S-P1, R/S-P2 and R/S-P3) with different side chain alkyl groups (n-C4H9; n-C6H13; n-C8H17), which can act as chirality inducers and form chiral co-assemblies with an achiral pyrenyl fluorophore (Bpy). At a 50% doping weight ratio of R/S-P2 inducer with Bpy, this kind of chiral co-assembly (R/S-P2-Bpy) can exhibit helical nano fibers and emit a strong deep blue CPL signal (lambda(em) = 420 nm, dissymmetry factor vertical bar g(em)vertical bar = 0.042) in spin-coated films after annealing (120 degrees C). Moreover, the stable CP-OLEDs using R/S-P2-Bpy as the device emitting layer (EML) can emit strong CP-EL with an electroluminescence dissymmetry factor vertical bar g(EL)vertical bar of up to 0.021.
Construction and Properties of Octahydrobinaphthol-based Chiral Luminescent Materials with Large Steric Hindrance

Abstract:Using chiral luminescent material as the emitting core in organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) would make these devices possess circularly polarized electroluminescence (CPEL) performance, namely CP-OLEDs, which are of great value for facilitating the development of the next generation of display technologies, especially for implementing real 3D display. In this study, a pair of octahydrobinaphthol (OBN)-based thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) materials, (S/R)-OBN-tBuCz, are developed by ingeniously merging a chiral source (OBN) and a luminophore skeleton (tert-butylcarbazole cyanobenzene). The peripheral sixteen hydrogen atoms in cyclohexane part of OBN unit and the larger tertiary butyl group could effectively increase the steric hindrance of chiral luminescence molecules, reduce the intermolecular stacking effect and inhibit concentration quenching, for effectively improving the luminescence efficiency of the devices. The synthesized chiral luminescent materials exhibit bright green light emission (523 nm), high photoluminescence quantum yield (85.2%), a small Delta E-ST of 0.05 eV with TADF property as well as excellent thermal stability. The chiroptical properties of (S/R)-OBN-tBuCz enantiomers in the ground and excited states are investigated by circular dichroism (CD) and circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) spectra, and the strong symmetrically circularly polarized luminescent signals with gPL of +8.6x10(-4) and -6.5x10(-4) in toluene solution are observed for (S)-OBN-tBuCz and (R)-OBN-tBuCz, respectively, indicating that the chirality is successfully induced into the TADF skeleton through chirality transmitting of OBN unit. Considering the efficient TADF and CPL properties, the enantiomers are employed as chiral emitters for fabricating CP-OLEDs. The electroluminescent devices based on (S/R)-OBN-tBuCz exhibit decent performances with the turn-on voltage of 3.9 V, the maximum brightness of 27709 cd.m(-2), the maximum current efficiency of 43.8 cd.A(-1), the maximum power efficiency of 33.5 lm.W-1, the maximum external quantum efficiency of 12.4% and low efficiency roll-off as well as obvious circularly polarized electroluminescence signals with gEL of +1.57x10(-3) and -0.90x10(-3), respectively. The design strategy of rationally merging chiral source and TADF skeleton can promote the development of chiral luminescent materials and circularly polarized electroluminescent devices.

Abstract:Circularly polarized organic light‐emitting diodes (CP‐OLEDs) are particularly favorable for the direct generation of CP light, and they demonstrate a promising application in 3D display. However, up to now, such CP devices have suffered from low brightness, insufficient efficiency, and serious efficiency roll‐off. In this study, a pair of octahydro‐binaphthol (OBN)‐based chiral emitting enantiomers, (R/S)‐OBN‐Cz, are developed by ingeniously merging a chiral source and a luminophore skeleton. These chirality–acceptor–donor (C–A–D)‐type and rod‐like compounds concurrently generate thermally activated delayed fluorescence with a small ΔEST of 0.037 eV, as well as a high photoluminescence quantum yield of 92% and intense circularly polarized photoluminescence with dissymmetry factors (|gPL|) of ≈2.0 × 10−3 in thin films. The CP‐OLEDs based on (R/S)‐OBN‐Cz enantiomers not only display obvious circularly polarized electroluminescence signals with a |gEL| of ≈2.0 × 10−3, but also exhibit superior efficiencies with maximum external quantum efficiency (EQEmax) up to 32.6% and extremely low efficiency roll‐off with an EQE of 30.6% at 5000 cd m−2, which are the best performances among the reported CP devices to date.
Chiral Co-Assembly with Narrowband Multi-Resonance Characteristics for High-Performance Circularly Polarized Organic Light-Emitting Diodes

Abstract:A promising kind of ternary chiral co-assemblies with high PLQY, large dissymmetry factor (glum), and narrowband multi-resonance characteristics are achieved by codoped-thermal annealing treatments of achiral luminescent polymer F8BT, chiral inducers R/S-5011, and achiral FRET acceptor DBN-ICZ. The optimized co-assemblies (F8BT)0.9-(R/S-5011)0.1-(DBN-ICZ)0.005 display narrowband yellow emission with full-width half maximum (FWHM) of 37 nm, PLQY of 79%, and intense CPL signals with |glum| of up to 0.26. Meaningfully, solution-processed CP-OLEDs by using those ternary chiral co-assemblies as emitting layer are successfully fabricated, which display yellow circularly polarized electroluminescence (CPEL) with EQEmax of 4.6% and gEL of up to 0.16. The corresponding Q-factor could reach up to 7.36 × 10-3, which is the highest of all the reported CP-OLEDs. Moreover, the devices also exhibit excellent comprehensive device performance with low Von of 7.0 V, high Lmax of about 25 000 cd m-2, extremely low efficiency roll-off with EQE of 4.3% at 10 000 cd m-2, as well as narrowband EL with FWHM of only 39 nm. The proposed ternary co-assembly strategy in fabricating CP-OLED provides the possibility to achieve high comprehensive device performance such as balancing high EQE and large gEL value, as well as narrowband emission, high brightness and low efficiency roll-off simultaneously.
Non-doped and doped circularly polarized organic light-emitting diodes with high performances based on chiral octahydro-binaphthyl delayed fluorescence luminophores

Abstract:Circularly polarized organic light-emitting diodes (CP-OLEDs) are of great value for facilitating the development of next generation display technologies, especially for implementing real 3D displays. However, most CP-OLEDs have insufficient efficiency and serious efficiency roll-off. In this study, a pair of octahydro-binaphthyl (OBN)-based chiral emitting enantiomers, (R/S)-OBN-DPA, were synthesized by ingeniously merging the chiral source and the luminophore skeleton of cyan and diphenylamine groups. The chirality-acceptor-donor (C-A-D) type enantiomers concurrently demonstrate a high photoluminescence quantum yield of 84.67%, and intense circularly polarized photoluminescence with dissymmetry factors (|g(PL)|) around 2.0 x 10(-3) in the films. The non-doped and doped CP-OLEDs achieve markedly circularly polarized electroluminescence signals with |g(EL)| up to 2.9 x 10(-3), high brightness over 25 000 cd cm(-2), high efficiency with a maximum external quantum efficiency (EQE(max)) of 12.4%, and negligible efficiency roll-off with an EQE of 11.5% at a practical luminance of 1000 cd m(-2), which are the best results among the reported CP-devices to date.

Abstract:Circularly polarized electroluminescence (CPEL) is highly promising in realm of 3D display and optical data storage. However, designing a groundbreaking chiral material with high comprehensive CPEL performance remains a formidable challenge. In this work, a pair of chiral polymers with self-assembled behavior is designed by integrating a chiral BN-moiety into polyfluorene backbone, named R-PBN and S-PBN, respectively. The chiral polymers show narrowband emission centered at 490 nm with full-width half maximum (FWHM) of 29 nm and high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of 79%. After thermal annealing treatment, the chiral polymers undergo self-assembly, exhibiting amplified circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) with asymmetry factor (|glum|) of up to 0.11. Moreover, the solution-processed nondoped CP-OLEDs based on the chiral polymers as emitting layers exhibit maximum external quantum efficiency (EQEmax) of 9.8%, intense CPEL activities with |gEL| of up to 0.07, and small FWHM of 36 nm, simultaneously. This represents the first case of self-assembled chiral polymers that combines high EQE, large gEL value and narrowband emission.

Controllable Circularly Polarized Electroluminescence Performance Improved by the Dihedral Angle of Chiral-Bridged Binaphthyl-Type Dopant Inducers

Abstract:Chirality of 1,1'-binaphthol (BINOL) is due to the restricted rotation between two naphthalene rings, and its skeletal structure of binaphthyl unit can be further modified by choosing functionalized substituents to afford the enlarged chiral induction effect. In this paper, we designed and synthesized nine chiral binaphthyl derivatives (R/S-1-R/S-9) as circularly polarized electroluminescence (CP-EL) inducers by inserting various bridged alkyl chains into the hydroxyl groups of BINOL or introducing functionalized substituents with different steric hindrances on the 3,3'-position of 2,2'-methylenedioxy-1,1'-binaphthalene. Their molecular conformations and CPL behaviors of nine chiral inducers were significantly dependent on the length of the alkyl chain and the degree of substituent steric hindrance, which could further regulate their chiral induction effect on achiral fluorescent polymer F8BT from small to large in the doped films. Moreover, in virtue of the planar rigid conjugated molecular conformation of R/S-1, R/S-6, and R/S-9, the amplified CPL signals (|gPL|) were detected as high as 2.36 × 10-2, 2.06 × 10-2, and 1.26 × 10-2 from blends of F8BT and these chiral inducers. The circularly polarized organic light-emitting diode (CP-OLED) device on the blends of F8BT and chiral inducers (R/S-6) with small dihedron angle and excellent carrier mobility showed a low turn-on voltage (Von < 4.5 V), high brightness (> 10509.6 cd/m2), and maximum |gEL| value of 1.86 × 10-2 (F8BT + 5% R/S-6). This work can develop and provide a valuable reference for CP-OLED device design through chiral dopant induction.

Abstract:Circularly polarized organic light-emitting diodes (CP-OLEDs) have attracted increasing interest for their advantages in generating circularly polarized light directly and efficiently. To date, chiral luminescent materials with different emission mechanisms have been investigated as emitters in CP-OLEDs, but it is difficult to achieve a high luminescence dissymmetry factor (g) and high efficiency simultaneously. Herein, chiral luminescent europium( II) complexes with d-f transition characteristics are synthesized and used as emitters in CP-OLEDs. The europium(II) complexes show a maximum g value of 6.6 x 10(-3) in doped films, and the corresponding CP-OLEDs show a maximum external quantum efficiency up to 15.6%. The performance is attributed to the unique europium( II) complex with a d-f transition mechanism, which results in a theoretically high magnetic transition dipole moment and high exciton utilization efficiency. This study focusing on chiral d-f transition-containing lanthanide complexes opens up an avenue to future exploration of high-performance chiroptical materials.

Abstract:Benefited from direct generation of circularly polarized (CP) emission with tunable colors, high efficiencies and facile device architectures, CP organic light-emitting diodes (CP-OLEDs) have attracted great attention and are expected to meet industrial applications. Particularly, CP electroluminescence (CPEL) originated from CP-OLEDs has wide potential applications in 3D displays, optical information storage, quantum communication, and biological sensors. The diverse design strategies of chiral luminescent materials for CP-OLEDs, including small organic emitters, lanthanide and transition-metal complexes and conjugated polymers, have been extensively explored. Helicene with twisted extended pi-conjugated molecular structure could exhibit special helical chirality and excellent circularly polarized luminescence properties, which has been employed as the ingenious chirality core for constructing efficient chiral luminescent materials. In addition, significant improvements have been made in terms of CP photoluminescence research, however, the development of CPEL with more application prospects in optoelectronic technology still lags behind. In this review, we systematically summarize the recent advances in chiral luminescent materials based on helicene structure and their CPEL properties, including helicene-based chiral fluorescence molecules, transition metal complexes and thermally activated delayed fluorescence molecules, and discuss current challenges and future perspectives for this hot research field. We believe this progress report will provide a promising perspective of OLEDs based on helicene emitters with CPEL properties for extensive researchers, including chemical, physical and material scientists in different disciplinary fields and attract them to this rapidly developing field.
Configurationally Stable Platinahelicene Enantiomers for Efficient Circularly Polarized Phosphorescent Organic Light-Emitting Diodes.

Abstract:Chiral materials with circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) are potentially applicable for 3D displays. In this study, by decorating the pyridinyl-helicene ligands with -CF3 and -F groups, the platinahelicene enantiomers featured superior configurational stability, as well as high sublimation yield (>90 %) and clear CPPL properties, with dissymmetry factors (|gPL |) of approximately 3.7×10-3 in solution and about 4.1×10-3 in doped film. The evaporated circularly polarized phosphorescent organic light-emitting diodes (CP-PhOLEDs) with two enantiomers as emitters exhibited symmetric CPEL signals with |gEL | of (1.1-1.6)×10-3 and decent device performances, achieving a maximum brightness of 11 590 cd m-2 , a maximum external quantum efficiency up to 18.81 %, which are the highest values among the reported devices based on chiral phosphorescent PtII complexes. To suppress the effect of reverse CPEL signal from the cathode reflection, the further implementation of semitransparent aluminum/silver cathode successfully boosts up the |gEL | by over three times to 5.1×10-3 .

Abstract:White circularly polarized organic light‐emitting diodes (CP‐WOLEDs) are central to prospective 3D displays and lighting sources. However, owing to the unwanted charge trapping effect and inefficient chirality transfer, the development of CP‐WOLEDs with a high color rendering index (CRI) and large dissymmetry factor (gEL) is challenging. Herein, a pioneering strategy of chiral co‐assembly‐sensitized circularly polarized luminescence (CCS‐CPL) is proposed for improving the performance of white circularly polarized electroluminescence (CP‐EL). Chiral co‐assembled sensitizers ((S‐/R‐Cz)0.2‐(I‐P)0.8) are smartly developed using π–π stacking interactions between the chiral binaphthyl derivatives (S‐/R‐Cz) and achiral conjugated pyrene‐based polymer (I‐P) in a molar ratio of 1:4. Using the chiral co‐assembly‐sensitized strategy on achiral aggregation‐induced emission (AIE) dyes for emitting layers (EMLs) of OLEDs, full‐color achiral AIE‐active dyes can be sensitized by chiral co‐assembly (S‐/R‐Cz)0.2‐(I‐P)0.8. The color‐tunable white CP‐EL performance can be achieved at the CIE coordinates of (0.33, 0.33) with an ultrahigh CRI of 93 and a large gEL value up to 0.071. This study thus provides a valuable guidance for CCS‐type CP‐WOLEDs.
Inverted Circularly Polarized Luminescence Behavior Induced by Helical Nanofibers Through Chiral Co-Assembly from Achiral Liquid Crystal Polymers and Chiral Inducers

Abstract:Chiral supramolecular assembly can provide a powerful strategy for developing circularly polarized luminescence (CPL)-active materials by forming helices or superhelices into single or multiple components. Herein, we chose three achiral liquid crystal polymers (LC-P1/P2/P3) and chiral binaphthyl-based inducers (R/S-M) with anchored dihedral angles to construct chiral co-assemblies and explore the induced CPL behavior from pyrenyl (Py) emitters in achiral LC polymers through the regulation of helical nanofibers during the supramolecular co-assembly process. Most interestingly, chiral co-assembly (R/S-M)0.1-(P3)0.9 emitted an inverted blue-colored CPL signal during thermal annealing treatment at the glass transition temperature due to the flexible main chain of the LC polymer (LC-P3). The strongest blue-colored CPL emission for the (R/S-M)0.1-(P3)0.9 spin-coated film (λem = 455 nm, |gem| = 6.47 × 10-2, ΦF = 48.5%) could be detected by using thermal annealing treatment at 105 °C.

Abstract:High‐performance circularly polarized organic light‐emitting diodes (CP‐OLEDs) are constructed by using chiral helical polymers with high helical twisting power as inducers to trigger efficient CP electroluminescence emission from achiral conjugated polymers. Through device structure optimization, a maximum electroluminescent dissymmetry factor and brightness up to 2.0 × 10−2 and 35 303 cd m−2 are respectively obtained. Circularly polarized organic light‐emitting diodes (CP‐OLEDs) have attracted tremendous attention, but constructing CP‐OLEDs with both high electroluminescence dissymmetry factors (gEL) and good device performance remains a big challenge. The present work reports the first CP‐OLEDs by using chiral helical polymers as inducers to trigger efficient CP electroluminescence from achiral conjugated polymers. The successful preparation of CP‐OLEDs based on two chiral helical polymers further demonstrates the universality of the established strategy. Benefiting from the high helical twisting power of the chiral helical polymer, a maximum |gEL| value of 2.0 × 10−2 is obtained in the resulting CP‐OLEDs. Moreover, by adopting an inverted device structure, the device performance of the CP‐OLEDs is significantly improved, with a maximum brightness of 49340/51973 cd m−2, high current efficiency of 5.62/5.44 cd A−1, and low turn‐on voltage of 3.1/3.1 V, respectively. The work offers new insights into fabricating CP‐OLEDs by taking advantage of chiral helical polymers.

Abstract:Organic light‐emitting diodes (OLEDs) that are able to emit high levels of circularly polarized (CP) light hold significant promise in numerous future technologies. Such devices require chiral emissive materials to enable CP electroluminescence. However, the vast majority of current OLED emitter classes, including the state‐of‐the‐art triplet‐harvesting Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence (TADF) materials, produce very low levels of CP electroluminescence. Here we showcase a host‐guest strategy that allows for energy transfer between a chiral polymer host and a representative chiral TADF emitter. Such a mechanism results in large amplification of the circular polarization of the emitter. As such, this study presents a promising avenue to further boost the performance of CP‐OLED devices, enabling their further development and eventual commercialization. Abstract:Optically active persistent luminescent materials have attracted significant attention due to their distinctive luminescent characteristics and ability to exhibit rich circular polarization information. Despite extensive efforts to develop circularly polarized persistent luminescence (CPPL) materials using chiral molecules or polymers, fabricating CPPL materials from achiral units remains a big challenge. In this work, we introduce an efficient co-assembly strategy to create CPPL materials using entirely achiral organic molecules. The optical activities of co-assembled complexes are attributed to structural chirality, which arises from chiral nanohelices formed during symmetry breaking in the self-assembly process of C 3 -symmetric molecules. Achiral molecules with long-lasting phosphorescence can adhere to these chiral nanostructures via hydrogen bonding, and during the drying phase, form nanocrystals that align along helical fibers, resulting in circularly polarized, long-lasting phosphorescence. Enhanced CPPL efficiency, ranging from blue to yellow with a dissymmetry factor over 1.2 × 10 −2 and lifetime of up to 0.6 s at room temperature, is achieved through hydrogen bonding driven co-assembly. Additionally, the CPPL spectra of these co-assemblies are captured using a homemade time-resolved circularly polarized long afterglow detection platform. This study not only presents a new approach for the high-efficiency design of CPPL materials from achiral building blocks but also significantly broadens the research possibilities in real-time CPPL analysis, offering a horizon in the exploration of CPPL materials.
